The coronavirus crisis that erupted in March and carries on to this day in New York shook all of us to our core. Wantagh-Seaford, however, remains strong. It is a community full of fighters. Superstorm Sandy and Tropical Storm Isaias, which ravaged the the area, proved that. The storms pummeled our shores, but they never defeated our indomitable spirit to survive and thrive. Just as we saw in Sandy's wake, neighbors Stuart have helped neighbors through the Covid-19 crisis and Isaias, delivering food and medical Richner supplies to vulnerable residents, providing meals for the jobless and just checking in on one another. Thankfully, as of this writing in mid-September, the coronavirus infection rate had dropped to about 1 percent in New York. Let us hope and pray it remains at or falls below that level so people stay safe, and we can continue Wantagh-Seaford's successful reopening of the economy and our schools. That will depend on all of us doing our parts — wearing our facial covers, maintaining social distance — not only today and tomorrow, but also likely for months to come. Throughout the crisis, the Wantagh and Seaford Herald Citizen papers continued to provide invaluable news to the community, incuding information on institution closings, new safety protocols and, unfortunately, remembrances of lives lost. I want to thank our journalists for their commitment to the Wantagh-Seaford community. Our staff, categorized as essential workers by Governor Cuomo, were out in the field regularly, even during the height of the pandemic, to ensure people who work and live in Wantagh and Seaford had access to the best and most up-to-date information. Additionally, Richner Communications, the parent company of the Wantagh and Seaford Herald Citizen papers, was proud to provide $500,000 in small business marketing grants to entrepreneurs across the South Shore, including many in the area. We know small businesses are the lifeblood of any community — especially in Wantagh-Seaford — so we are hopeful these funds will help your favorite stores and restaurants get back on their feet. In this edition of our annual community guide, we look at all that is wonderful about Wantagh-Seaford, at the same time that we examine what has changed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Living In Wantagh/Seaford is a special publication of the Wantagh and Seaford Herald Citizen papers, the community's hometown publications. Living In is published in cooperation with the Wantagh and Seaford Chambers of Commerce, and we are honored to mark another year as their official publications. We hope you find this issue of Living In Wantagh/Seaford useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the Wantagh and Seaford Herald Citizen papers 52 weeks a year.

peak with anyone who knows Seaford, from native Donna Schneider to the Herald’s 2019 Person of the Year Donna Jebaily to Seaford Schools Superintendent Dr. Adele Pecora, and it’s a certainty that within the first few moments of conversation they will use the expression “Seaford Pride.” It’s not just the cheer of a booster. Seafordites are genuinely proud of their community, and with good reason. “There are so many people in this town that take time out of their lives to make the lives of others better,” Jebaily said. That spirit has been tested this past year like never before. With schools and businesses closed because of a global pandemic, the entire hamlet has pulled together. From elementary school students making thank-you cards and meals for front-line workers to students from Seaford High School running food drives to a radical change in the way teachers interact with their students, the entire hamlet has reimagined itself in record time, creating a “new normal.” The difficulties have been enormous and many remain to be solved. Businesses and schools have begun to reopen. Parks and recreation facilities are in use for the first time since March. “I can’t say enough about the schools,” Jebaily said. “The teachers, administration, support staff are all exceptional. My children are not only getting the best education possible, but they are among people who truly care about them.” Seaford is home to nearly a dozen parks, including Seamans Neck Park, Washington Avenue Park, Estella Park and Cedar Creek Park, located just south of Merrick Road and east of Wantagh Avenue. Under normal conditions, Seaford offers a Police Activity League for several children’s sports, along with a Catholic Youth Organization and Seaford Little League baseball and softball. It is also the home of the Long Island Broncos youth football and cheer organization. Seaford’s main business district runs along Merrick Road. Businesses are also located farther north, along Sunrise Highway, Washington Avenue and in the Seaford Harbor section. Seaford’s many service clubs — including the Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club, Wellness Council, the Seaford Historical Society, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Kiwanis Club — have stepped up during the crisis, providing food for shut-ins, face masks and other protective gear. Seaford’s spirit of service has never been as important as it is now, and it is likely to continue to be needed in the coming year, as the community works to recovery from the biggest crisis in a century.

atching Dorothy Meinke get up and dance with the five generations of her extended family, no one would guess that she was celebrating her 100th birthday. The old saw about “not looking a day over 70” was more than apt. “I’ve had a wonderful life,” Brooklyn-born Meinke, as she looked out over her progeny, which contained a remarkable number of blonde, blueeyed women and girls. “She was called the ‘queen of the blondes,’” grandson Eric Schneider said as he leafed through the yearbook of the 1939 St. Brendan’s High School graduate. The mother of eight was born Dorothy Luhr, on March 2, 1920. It was the year women first voted in national elections and the year Prohibition went into effect. Warren Harding became the 29th U.S. president two days after her birth, and Al Jolson’s “Swanee” topped the hit parade for the year. By the time Meinke and her husband, Richard, moved to Seaford in 1949, the 29-year-old mother had three small children in tow. Richard died in 2008. As her family expanded to eight children, Meinke’s youngest were only a few years older than her oldest grandchildren. She currently has
21 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. “She was always joking,” son Richard said of his mother. No. 4 in the line-up, he was the oldest son. “I don’t remember what I was doing, but one day I was clowning around at the dinner table,” he recalled. “She said if I didn’t stop, she was going to pour the bottle of ketchup over my head.” He continued his antics, and his mother turned out to be as good as her word. “She emptied the whole bottle on my head,” he said, laughing. Seaford is not the same rural hamlet Meinke moved to 71 years ago. And her family has spread all the way to California. But with her robust health and the love of her family, she said she looks forward to her 110th — and becoming a great-greatgreat-grandmother. Photos by Timothy Denton/Herald-Citizen

e have a very engaged community with a wonderful support system of organizations that contribute to our quality of life,” said Ella Stevens, president of the Wantagh Homeowner’s Association and the Fourth of July Parade Association, as well as director of the Miss Wantagh pageant. Like so many events this year, the pageant was conducted virtually, with the crown going to last year’s first runner-up, Grace Massari. Pageant winners commit to a year of service in the community; this year, their service has been doubly important. Local events, like the St. Patrick’s Day Parade that was such a spectacular success in 2019, had to be postponed and, ultimately, canceled. The Fourth of July celebrations were also canceled, because of the virus. According to local real estate professionals, Wantagh schools are among the strongest selling points for families looking to relocate to the community. “Our schools have been, and continue to be, schools of excellence, in which we take great pride,” Stevens said. In more normal times, Wantagh residents speak of how much they love the hamlet’s proximity to the water. From the marina in Wantagh Park all the way down to Jones Beach, no place in Wantagh is more than 15 minutes from the water. And the 16-mile Jones Beach bike path that has been extended to Gilgo Beach offers fresh air, exercise and a respite from the coronavirus. Without question, the lockdown has had an impact on Wantagh’s businesses. It has been particularly tough for restaurants and retail establishments. Even with the phased reopening, recovery has been slow, but businesses have begun to develop new approaches for their businesses. The prevailing mood is one of optimism. Love and support for their community is a common denominator among residents. Residents love the hamlet’s he train museum, which showcases part of Wantagh’s nearly 400-year history, its beautiful neighborhoods, and, above all, the small town feel. “There’s so many friendly people,” one longtime resident said. “It’s a great place to raise a family!” Wantagh is served by the Nassau County Police Department, the Wantagh Fire Department and EMTs, and Wantagh-Levittown Volunteer Ambulance Corps. It has its own Long Island Rail Road station and an active library. Major roads include Merrick Road, Sunrise Highway, Jerusalem Avenue, Wantagh Avenue and the Wantagh and Southern state parkways. Residents look forward eagerly to the day when their lives can return to a new kind of normal, and they can resume their enjoyment of all the many amenities, entertainment and recreation opportunities that the hamlet affords.

ith 3,000-plus students, the Wantagh Union Free School District is moving ahead with the reopening its five schools after closing for in-person classes for six months. Wantagh was better positioned than many local districts to implement distance learning in its curricula. Schools were already closed for disinfecting when they received Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s definitive order in March 2020. Before the closure, the district posted an outstanding year for athletics and academics alike. Wantagh Union Free School District students excel in every arena: in the classroom, on the athletic field, in the performing arts and extracurricular activities. The district has now fully implemented its technology goal of a Chromebook for every student. Middle and high school STEAM teams scored
impressive victories in county competitions, with one team from each school qualifying for the state finals. After last year’s 5,000-mile virtual run to Honolulu, students from Mandalay Elementary School decided on a second run this year, this time with Tokyo as the end point. Wantagh High School bid a fond and emotional farewell to longtime principal Carolyn Breivogel and her administrative partner, Assistant Principal James Brown, while also welcoming incoming Principal Dr. Paul Guzzone and Assistant Principal Nick Pappas.

ith the closure of all schools in New York on March 17, the 2019-20 academic year must go down as one of the most difficult in the history of Seaford School District since its founding. Before the closure, Seaford sports teams and individual athletes had one of their best years in recent memory, including championship boys’ and girls’ bowling, cross-country, soccer and winter track teams. The varsity cheer squad won the Nassau County championship, taking third place at states. Seaford High School was also named a ScholarAthlete School of Excellence. Danielle Alveari, a sixth-grade teacher at Seaford Middle School, published her first children’s book, “Little Lucy May’s Loss,” a self-help book about how children cope with grief. Sophomore Madison Elias furthered her study into memory through her research project on pond snails. Elias was vying for a spot in the New York Science and Engineering Fair when schools were shut down.
Seaford began providing laptops to its students in 2017, when Superintendent Dr. Adele Pecora took the district’s helm. The district expected to have laptops for every student by the end of the 2020-21 academic year, so implementation of distance learning was perhaps less onerous than for other districts. With the district’s four schools slated to reopen in September, district officials, parents, teachers and students all hope for a return to more normal conditions. Seaford is also home to two private Catholic schools: Maria Regina and St. William The Abbot, as well as the Hagedorn Little Village School, a private school for more than 400 special-needs students. Cycling to Jones Beach, social-distancing style By Scott Brinton
N
assau County has fewer than 50 miles of bike trails, compared to New York City, which has 450, and Suffok County, which has 370. So Nassau residents have long had a hard time finding a place to ride freely, unconcerned about the presence of cars. With the Covid-19 pandemic hitting, and people unable to work out at their gyms, many are turning to cycling for their regular dose of exercise. What happens, however, when so many people must make do with a relatively small number of bike trails? Are they able to abide by current social-distancing requirements when riding? Heralds Executive Editor Scott Brinton rode the Wantagh Park bike trail from Cedar Creek County Park to
Jones Beach State Park Saturday to find out, and for the most part, he found, cyclists, runners and inline skaters were keeping a safe distance — at least six feet apart. On this page you will find his photos from his 10-mile round-trip. For more photos, see liherald.com. Scott Brinton/Herald-Citizen

History of Wantagh
W
antagh’s history began in 1643, when Capt. John Seaman and Robert Jackson purchased land from the local Indians, including the areas now known as Wantagh and Seaford. At the time, Wantagh was inhabited by the Merokee tribe of the Metoac Indians before Dutch and English colonists arrived. Then, the Dutch petitioned to obtain everything west of Oyster Bay. The area was known as Jerusalem by the Dutch. The name still stands in the names of local institutions. The area was named Ridgewood in the 1880s. In 1891, because Ridgewood was already being used by another

The Wantagh Post Office was rebuilt in 1907 to replicate the original 1837 look. It currently sits across from the Wantagh Preservation Society and the 1912 Jamaica parlor car at 1700 Wantagh Ave. On March 17, Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered all schools and nonessential businesses closed, in response to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Many have reopened, but the region has been plunged into uncertainty.

History of Seaford
T
he area known today as Seaford was originally called “Great Water Land” or “Land on the Great Cove,” by the Massapequa tribe who settled there. It was bought by Capt. John Seamen and Robert Jackson in 1643 and eventually named after his hometown in England. He bought the land after fleeing the Plymouth, Mass., settlement in search of greater freedom of religious and political expression. The first school was built in 1830. Today, the community south of Jerusalem Avenue is served by the Seaford School District, with some children in northern Seaford attending schools in Levittown. Private schools in Seaford include the Maria Regina
and St. William the Abbot parochial schools. The Hagedorn Little Village School serves more than 400 special-needs children. The Long Island Rail Road extended through Seaford to Babylon for the first time in 1867. The Seaford Historical Society, a former school building dedicated in 1976, holds much of Seaford’s history, such as a 1910 skiff and faded pictures of Seaford from many decades ago. With a population of roughly 15,000, Seaford commemorated the 375th anniversary, of its founding in 2018. In March, acting on orders from Gov. Andrew Cuomo, schools and nonessential businesses were closed in response to the global Covid-19 pandemic, plunging the hamlet into uncertainty.

Weathering an ‘unprecedented’ pandemic at MSSN By Mike Smollins
Guidelines®”-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite. MSSN’s beautiful North Addition houses two 36bed medical surgical units, a 36-bed inpatient behavioral health unit and comprehensive maternity services center with 26 private postpartum rooms, spacious labor and delivery rooms and a neonatal intensive care unit. The hospital’s Emergency Services department is one of the largest and most advanced on Nassau County’s South Shore. Designated a regional stroke center and Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons, the department houses 35 treatment rooms and specialty care, including a high-speed CT-scan and x-ray facility, pediatric emergency room and psychiatric emergency room. And that capacity will soon be expanding. MSSN is working on building a new four-story, 58,000-square-foot wing. The new wing will nearly double the size of the emergency room, add new and larger operating rooms, add more beds in the critical-care wing, and will also help prepare the hospital in case of another hurricane like Sandy or a surge in patients from a pandemic like it saw during the Covid-19 peak. MSSN is the only hospital on Nassau’s South Shore permitted to perform angioplasty in an emergency or an elective basis. In the event you or a loved one need angioplasty, it can be performed on the spot at the hospital’s Center for Cardiovascular Health, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The facility’s Cancer Center is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and has received the Outstanding Achievement Award for three consecutive survey cycles (2009, 2012, 2015). With leading-edge cancer fighting technologies, including Novalis Tx™ radiosurgery, daVinci robotic-assisted surgery, the Long Island Gamma Knife® and world-class physician talent specializing in cancer, MSSN offers South Shore residents expert cancer care without the need to travel to points north or into the city. For more information about MSSN and its services, call (877) 768-8462 or (516) 632-3000, or go to www.southnassau.org. We encourage you to “like” them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.
When faced with an “unprecedented” situation in April as coronavirus numbers reached their peak, 383, the staff at Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital rose to the occasion and banded together to get through the difficult time. “We are stretched beyond anything we have seen in the past,” spokesman Joe Calderone said at the time. “The situation here is unprecedented.” While many lives were lost to the coronavirus, the hospital celebrated the release of hundreds of Covid-19 positive patients who were released with a clean bill of health. At a time when front-line workers were stretched thin, the Oceanside community and many others came together to show their support, donating food to the hospital’s staff daily throughout the pandemic. In May, when cases began plummeting, the hospital returned to offering elective surgeries as the hospital began a “Don’t Put Your Health on Hold” initiative, urging the community not to risk safety out of fear of coming to a hospital. “If you’re out there and you have a procedure that you’ve been putting off, or if you have any kind of medical issue, you should call immediately,” Calderone said. “Don’t wait.” In June, most units of the hospital returned to welcoming visitors under strict guidelines, including one visitor per day per patient, and a shift from a 24 hours per day visitor policy to a four-hour window. Additionally, all visitors must undergo a Covid-19 test no more than two days before visiting. Before, during and after the surge of the pandemic, MSSN was committed to delivering standardsetting, patient-centered health care. It is one of the region’s largest hospitals, with 455 beds, more than 900 physicians and 3,000 employees. The hospital is an acute-care, not-for-profit teaching hospital that provides state-of-the-art care in cardiac, cancer, orthopedic, bariatric, pain management, mental health and emergency services. It is a designated Stroke Center, boasts Long Island’s first and only Gamma Knife® and Novalis Tx™ radiosurgery technologies for superior cancer care, expert orthopedic services, and emergency and elective angioplasty. MSSN has been designated as Christina Daly/Herald an Accredited Bariatric Surgery Center by MBSAQIP Front-line workers at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital in Oceanside came and is also a recipient of the American Heart Asso- outside to greet hundreds of cars that drove by in a parade to support them ciation/American Stroke Association’s “Get With The during the battle against the coronavirus in April.

GreetInG from the Chamber Greetings!
I
am Cathy McGrory Powell, president on the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce. I want to thank all of you who have been supporting not just Wantagh businesses, but local businesses in general. Shopping local helps the businesses to give back to the community, schools and charities. Not to mention, they provide jobs and job opportunities. They are an intricate part of what makes up a community, gives the town its vibe and personality. We know that many businesses are suffering because of the economic slowdown. Joining your local chamber is always a good idea. In these uncertain times, it’s even more important. Networking and helping one another can have a positive effect on your business. We have many businesses and residents that have expertise and knowledge that can help you restart, energize, grow and bring exposure to your business. As the economy opens up, chambers can help to promote your specials, sales, hours, help-wanted needs and more.
During this time, the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce has stayed active. We have been promoting the businesses that are open and operating. We have helped to raise funds for the Wantagh Food Bank and for the John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Although we haven’t been able to gather in public places, we have been holding meetings via Zoom. We have thanked our first responders and health-care workers, sent scholarships to our high school Seniors and thanked the community for supporting our local businesses. We have been hosting free movie nights in Wantagh Park with Nassau County Legislator Steve Rhoads, and they have been sponsored by many Wantagh businesses. We are still busy planning for the fall, continuing to promote and encourage the success of our business community. Please make sure you follow us on Facebook and Instagram for information regarding our businesses and chamber events. Thank you,
Cathy McGrory Powell

Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles, with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Donald Clavin — and a six-member Town Council. The council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
