The coronavirus crisis that erupted in March and carries on to this day in New York shook all of us to our core. Valley Stream, however, remains strong. It is a community full of fighters.

Superstorm Sandy and Tropical Storm Isaias, which ravaged the the area, proved that. The storms pummeled our shores, but they never defeated our indomitable spirit to survive and thrive.

Just as we saw in Sandy's wake, neighbors

Stuart have helped neighbors through the Covid-19 Richner crisis and Isaias, delivering food and medical supplies to vulnerable residents, providing meals for the jobless and just checking in on one another.

Thankfully, as of this writing in early September, the coronavirus infection rate had dropped to about 1 percent in New York. Let us hope and pray it remains at or falls below that level so people stay safe, and we can continue Valley Stream's successful reopening of the economy and soon begin reopening our schools. That will depend on all of us doing our parts — wearing our facial covers, maintaining social distance — not only today and tomorrow, but also likely for months to come.

Throughout the crisis, the Valley Stream Herald continued to provide invaluable news to the community, incuding information on institution closings, new safety protocols and, unfortunately, remembrances of lives lost. I want to thank our journalists for their commitment to the Valley Stream community. Our staff, categorized as essential workers by Governor Cuomo, were out in the field regularly, even during the height of the pandemic, to ensure people who work and live in Valley Stream had access to the best and most up-to-date information.

Additionally, Richner Communications, the parent company of the Valley Stream Herald, was proud to provide $500,000 in small business marketing grants to entrepreneurs across the South Shore, including many in the area. The camp that almost wasn’t Barrett Park summer program returns after uncertain start

T

t was sometime in early June when the counselors and director for the Barrett Park summer camp program approached village Director of Recreation Jimmy Fitanzo to inform him that should it be cancelled this summer, it would be for the first time in more than 35 years.

“So we got on a Zoom meeting, and myself and the counselors came up with a re-imagined type of program,” Fitanzo recalled. With restrictions on public gatherings due to the coronavirus pandemic, the program would have to be cut down, with fewer staff and smaller groups of campers and built-in social distancing procedures. After the redesign, Fitanzo and the staff brought the plan to the mayor and, he said, “he gave it his blessing.”

“The biggest thing was the parents,” he said, noting the pressures the virus has put on them, having been unable to send their children off to school during the latter half of the year. The camp would offer a brief respite, and give them a chance

to run errands or relax.

Although the camp’s capacity was halved to about 150 campers, Fitanzo said the cut-down program gave the staff a chance to acclimate themselves to equipment and activities originally intended for the camp’s full-day program, which would have launched this year for the first time.

“We’re using it as a positive,” he said.

And roughly halfway through the summer, feedback has been good. Despite the deep uncertainty, Fitanzo said, “it worked out.”

Weathering an ‘unprecedented’ pandemic at MSSN

MSSN’s beautiful North Addition houses two 36bed medical surgical units, a 36-bed inpatient behavioral health unit and comprehensive maternity services center with 26 private postpartum rooms, spacious labor and delivery rooms and a neonatal intensive care unit.

The hospital’s Emergency Services department is one of the largest and most advanced on Nassau County’s South Shore. MSSN is the only hospital on Nassau’s South Shore permitted to perform angioplasty in an emergency or an elective basis. In the event you or a loved one need angioplasty, it can be performed on the spot at the hospital’s Center for Cardiovascular Health, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

When faced with an “unprecedented” situation in April as coronavirus numbers reached their peak, 383, the staff at Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital rose to the occasion and banded together to get through the difficult time.

“We are stretched beyond anything we have seen in the past,” spokesman Joe Calderone said at the time. “The situation here is unprecedented.”

While many lives were lost to the coronavirus, the hospital celebrated the release of hundreds of Covid-19 positive patients who were released with a clean bill of health. At a time when front-line workers were stretched thin, the Oceanside community and many others came together to show their support, donating food to the hospital’s staff daily throughout the pandemic.

In May, when cases began plummeting, the hospital returned to offering elective surgeries as the hospital began a “Don’t Put Your Health on Hold” initiative, urging the community not to risk safety out of fear of coming to a hospital.

“If you’re out there and you have a procedure that you’ve been putting off, or if you have any kind of medical issue, you should call immediately,” Calderone said. “Don’t wait.”

In June, most units of the hospital returned to welcoming visitors under strict guidelines, including one visitor per day per patient, and a shift from a 24 hours per day visitor policy to a four-hour window.

Additionally, all visitors must undergo a Covid-19 test no more than two days before visiting.

Before, during and after the surge of the pandemic, MSSN was committed to delivering standardsetting, patient-centered health care. It is one of the region’s largest hospitals, with 455 beds, more than 900 physicians and 3,000 employees.

Bringing farm-fresh food to Valley Stream

A

fter a delay from uncertainty over the coronavirus pandemic, the Valley Stream farmer’s market returned this summer to the Hendrickson Park pool parking lot, and will continue every Thursday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. until Novemeber.

The market’s sponsor, Long Island Growers Market LLC, announced the news on social media, and said many of the vendors from the previous year’s market had returned, including Fred Terry and Son Farms, Conklin’s Farms, Sal and Jerry’s stuffed breads and many more.

Growers Market was founded more than 30 years ago by Ethel Terry, the owner of the Orient Point-based Fred Terry and Son Farms.

At the time, she said, the farm was struggling to survive, and to save it she knew she would have to sell her produce first-hand. In 1989, her first farmer’s market opened in Islip.

Valley Stream’s was the newest of Terry’s markets, first opening last June. She had been invited after village Assistant Recreation Superintendent Mike Pellegrino discovered the organization upon inquiring with Rockville Centre village officials, whose own Growers Market had proved popular. The Rockville Centre market opened this year on June 7.

All of products sold at the markets must be made, caught or grown by the vendor, according to Terry’s policy. She also verifies that the vendors are licensed, and makes each show her their invoices to prove that they make their own products. “She has pretty strict standards,” Pellegrino said.

The market also accepts Women, Infants and Children Program and Nutrition Program for Seniors coupons for those on food assistance.

The village asks that shoppers wear facemasks.

lounded in 1925, the Valley Stream Central High School District offers a variety of programs to prepare students for college. There are culinary, science research, performing arts and technical programs, along with SAT preparation classes and college workshops. There are also writing enrichment classes at the middle school and 23 Advanced Placement courses at the high schools.

There are about 4,600 students in four schools, with a professional staff of about 450 in the Valley Stream Central High School District, which is one of only three New York state districts that covers only grades seven to 12.

Central High School houses grades 10 to 12 and opened on Fletcher Avenue in 1929. Before that, students attended school on Wheeler Avenue. That building was torn down after the new high school was built.

Memorial Junior High School is grades seven to nine. It opened in 1952 when Central High School became too crowded. A year later, North and South high schools were approved on the same referendum and built in identical styles. They opened in 1955 and are the two junior and senior high schools, serving grades seven to 12.

Students attend these schools after graduating from elementary districts 13, 24 or 30. The district’s nine-member Board of Education consists of three representatives from each elementary school district board and holds meetings that are open to the public.

Elementary District 13 among the very best

V

alley Stream District 13 is the oldest and largest of Valley Stream’s elementary school districts. Its first wooden schoolhouse was built in 1858 after the New York State Legislature passed “An Act for the Establishment of Common Schools” in 1812. Before this building, District 13 students walked to nearby districts to attend school. The schoolhouse was replaced in 1872 and 1891; in 1905, the schoolhouse was built as a clapboard school.

The present Wheeler Avenue School was built in 1925. The James A. Dever School, then named Corona Avenue, was built in 1950, followed by Howell and Willow Road Schools in 1953.

There are about 2,200 students and 200 staff members in the four District 13 schools that serve grades kindergarten to six. Wheeler Avenue, James A. Dever, Howell Road and Willow Road run by the motto, “Where children come first.” The district encompasses part of the Village of Valley Stream, North Valley Stream, Malverne, Franklin Square and Elmont.

istrict 24 was formed in 1894 from sections of Hewlett-Woodmere District 14 and Valley Stream District 13. Its first schoolhouse, which was built around 1879, was replaced in 1896 and again in 1907 with the present Brooklyn Avenue School. The William L. Buck School opened in 1952, followed by the Robert W. Carbonaro School in 1954, then called Harbor Road School.

There are about 1,100 students and 220 professional staff members in the three elementary schools that serve kinderarten through sixth grade.

The district prides itself on its students’ high academic achievements and scores on the New York state tests.

The district’s 20,000 residents have long supported the schools by approving the annual budget and getting involved.

In the 2019-20 school year, District 24 began adopting lessons around a new suite of interaction learning tools. Funded by a $75,000 state grant, the tools by Belgium-based i3 Technologies are intended to move learning beyond traditional penand-paper correspondence, chalk and dry-erase boards.

istrict 30 was formed in 1923 from parts of Valley Stream School Districts 13 and 24, and Elmont District 16.

Clear Stream Avenue opened in 1924 and Shaw Avenue opened in 1951; Forest Road School opened in 1953, followed by the Washington Avenue School, which later closed.

The three schools in District 30 serve roughly 1,500 students in grades kindergarten to six. In 2012, Shaw Avenue was nominated by the New York State Education Department as a National Blue Ribbon School because of its achievement on the 2011 New York State state assessments. The education department has also designated each school in District 30 as a “Reward School.”

The three schools offer a variety of activities, such as performing arts programs, gifted and talented education, before- and after-school clubs, integrated technology projects and home-school connections.

Programs implemented in recent years included Latin for grades four to six, an elementary science program for third grade, lab write-up instruction for sixth grade and an integrated ELA/ social studies curriculum for all students.

T

his year Valley Stream embarked on a new effort to increase its recycling efficiency by switching to a dualstream recycling system.

Operating on a biweekly basis, sanitation workers now alternate between collecting plastics, glass and metal one week, and paper and cardboard the next. It was an effort, village officials said, to save the village money as well as protect the environment by cutting down on recyclables that are inadvertently sent to landfills.

The change was a response to major disruptions in the international market for recyclable materials after China stopped cheaply accepting the world’s, paper, glass metal and plastics.

With the increased price in recycling, and certain plastics and papers no longer cost-efficient to

recycle, recycling firms are now more likely to dump remaining items they still do recycle into landfills if they are mixed with unrecyclable materials, and pass the increased costs on to the municipalities they contract with.

“Recycling is not just a Valley Stream problem; it’s a nationwide problem,” Sanitation Department Supervisor Brian Leavey explained to residents during a Q&A session for residents in December. “A lot of recyclables are getting thrown into immiscible solid waste, and it’s going into landfills, and that’s not fair for that to happen . . . the best way to rectify the problem is to do things through dual stream and making sure we are throwing the right items in the [recycling] bins.”

Town & County Nassau County Nassau County is governed by an elected Legislature, which comprises members from 19 districts. It includes an independent budget director, who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters. Residents may submit petitions for proposed laws that legislators must consider. Legislators serve two-year terms.

The county executive — currently Democrat Laura Curran — serves a four-year term and is the chief administrator. Nassau also has an elected comptroller, currently Jack Schnirman; district attorney, Madeline Singas; and county clerk, Maureen O’Connell.

Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles, with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads.

Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Donald Clavin — and a six-member Town Council. The council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office.

The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget.

Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
