No one saw the coronavirus pandemic coming. No one expected it to last more than a handful of weeks. No one could have imagined the terrible death toll that it would exact. The past 19 months tested all of us beyond our limits. Five Towners, however, remain strong. These communities are full of fighters. Now we understand just how resilient we are. As we saw in Superstorm Sandy's wake in 2012, neighbors have been helping neighbors Stuart throughout the Covid-19 crisis, delivering food Richner and medical supplies to vulnerable residents, providing meals for the jobless and just checking in on one another. Thankfully, as of this writing in mid-September, some 80 percent of adult Nassau County residents had received at least their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccines, and the infection rate had dropped locally to about 4 percent. Let us hope and pray it remains at or falls below that level so people remain safe, and we can continue our successful reopening of the economy. That will depend on all of us doing our parts — most importantly, scheduling a vaccination appointment if you have not already made one. Throughout the crisis, the Nassau (Five Towns) Herald has provided invaluable news to the community, including information on institution closings, new safety protocols and, unfortunately, remembrances of lives lost. I want to thank our journalists for their commitment to the community. Our staff, categorized as essential workers, have been out in the field regularly, even during the height of the pandemic, to ensure people who work and live in the Five Towns had access to the best and most up-to-date information. Additionally, Richner Communications, the parent company of the Nassau Herald, was proud to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in small business marketing grants to entrepreneurs across the South Shore, including many in the community. We know small businesses are the lifeblood of any community — especially the Five Towns — so we are hopeful these funds will help your favorite stores and restaurants get back on their feet. In this edition of our annual community guide, we look at all that is wonderful about Five Towns residents, at the same time that we examine what has changed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Living In the Five Towns is a special publication of the Nassau Herald, hometown newspaper of this community. Living In is published in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce, and we are honored to mark another year as the chamber's official publication. We hope you find this issue of Living In the Five Towns useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the Nassau Herald 52 weeks a year. Be well and be safe.

With the release of the Johnson & Johnson, Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccines, life was slowly moving back to “normal” as mask mandates and social distancing guidelines were lifted. Then, just as fast as activities returned and businesses reopened with a pre-Covid flourish, the delta variant struck and coronavirus cases began rising again. For the Five Towns, which consists of Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Inwood, Lawrence and Woodmere, and the area that includes with Atlantic Beach, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck, Meadowmere Park, North Woodmere and Woodsburgh, life was a mixture of getting vaccinated, seeing the children off to summer camp and then being worried if the spike in infections would affect your family and friends. The 2020-21 school year blended in-person and remote learning; however, the end of the school year was a touch more normal, as graduations were held and there were many less of the drive-through celebrations that marked 2020. The 2021-22 school year began in much more typical fashion, with in-person instruction and fewer safety protocols, but masking indoors was required to keep children younger than 12, who cannot yet receive the vaccines, along with others who are medically compromised, safe. Desk shields were mostly gone, but social distancing was recommended. Sports were back and so were the traditional homecomings during the football season. The Five Towns Community Center in Lawrence continued its unrelenting quest to help its surrounding communities as Gammy’s Pantry, run by Inwood resident Sasha Young, offered food, clothing and other universally needed items. The Community Center and the entire Five Towns suffered a terrible loss when longtime Inwood businessman and center advocate Pete Sobol died. Inwood Day in August was dedicated to his memory. The Marion & Aaron Gural JCC also continued to distribute or deliver food to those in need through its Rina Shkolnik Kosher Food Pantry. The Leon Mayer Fund, in association with Kosher Response, opened the Mark Ramer Chessed Center at its Hewlett building, and held had a back-to-school event, at which backpacks and school supplies were given out, and a separate a shirt and shoe giveaway was held. Vaccinations appeared to divide people as anti-vaxxers made their opposition known; however, many local officials advocated for vaccination. The Gural JCC hosted an inoculation event for seniors in partnership with the UJA Federation of New York and the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway, and the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach collaborated with the UJA to vaccinate adolescents and teens ages 12 and 15. Community Chest South Shore and the Kiwanis of the Five Towns and Peninsula Kiwanis remained critical parts of the charitable

landscape in the Five Towns. Community Chest held its 5K Run and Family Walk. Lawrence-based Achiezer was part of a project that had 13 local rabbis join forces for a video that strongly advocated for vaccination. The summer was different than last, as camps were open, but the annual Santa Marina Festival in Inwood was not held, though the church service at Our Lady of Good Counsel and procession were. Beach clubs, village beaches and county- and town-run swimming pools were open, with safety protocols in place. A lifeguard shortage remained an issue because of the coronavirus pandemic, and wages increased for those who were certified. Hewlett resident Isabella Santos got creative and established a babysitting service, the Baby Sitters Club of the Five Towns, taking the idea from the “Baby-Sitter Club” book series. The 2021 Hewlett High School graduate said she planned to growi the business as she attends Davidson College in North Carolina. As in 2020, it was unclear precisely how the pandemic would play out in the rest of 2021. Would the outdoor fall fairs be held? Could all the Christmas tree and Hanukkah menorah lightings take place? Living in the Five Towns has become somewhat different, but no less interesting.

A Message from the Hewlett-Woodmere

Business AssociATion Dear Residents:

T

he HewlettWoodmere Business Association was formed to bring together merchants and professionals conducting business in the hamlets of Hewlett and Woodmere, including North Woodmere, served by School District 14. Hewlett-Woodmere David Friedman Business Association members support programs throughout the school district, local organizations and civic associations. We aim to foster awareness from adjoining communities as to our merchandise, activities and services offered in the two villages. The HWBA gives our members daily social media advertising posts. We do ribbon cuttings for new businesses. We enjoy the support of Town Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, County Legislators Howard Kopel & Denise Ford, County Executive Laura Curran, Town Supervisor Donald Clavin, State

Sen. Todd Kaminsky and State Assembywoman Melissa Miller. It is these public officials and our residents who look to an active business association to make our community a more attractive place to reside. The HWBA is an integral part of the community. We hold Christmas and Hanukkah celebrations and other community events at our Veterans Memorial Plaza. We organize the Memorial Day Parade and sponsor Kids Night Out as well as other activities. Our award-winning school district, excellent library and shopping areas are what help to unite us as a vibrant community. We invite you to eat in our local restaurants, shop our boutiques and use our service businesses to help us remain a strong business hub.

Five Towns Schools The Hewlett-Woodmere and Lawrence public school districts and the many yeshivas that dot the Five Towns landscape, returned to in-person classroom instruction as masking inside the buildings became de rigueur at the beginning of the new school year with new Gov. Kathy Hochul’s universal mask mandate and a few private mandated vaccination for its employees. A good portion of school age children can be and are vaccinated, and it is considered possible that children younger than 12 could be vaccinated against Covid-19 as early a late fall or winter. The state’s Public Health and Health Planning Council approved an emergency regulation and the Health Commissioner said in September that all teachers, administrators and other school employees must submit to weekly Covid testing if they do not show roof of vaccination. Within the state-issued guidance for classroom instruction, it calls for all public school districts and non-public schools to “support opportunities for students and staff to access Covid-19 vaccination clinics in collaboration with local health partners as needed.” As schools planned for their reopening, district superintendents, executive directors and many other administrators carefully reviewed the guidance from the state that jumped off from advice given by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Lawrence School District Dr. Ann Pedersen added a caveat to an August newsletter sent to the school community. “Please note that the situation with Covid-19 continuously changes and as needed we will revisit these guidelines, adjusting if needed,” she wrote.

Your local Libraries The public libraries in the Five Towns – Hewlett-Woodmere and Peninsula Public Library – have continued to offer as many services as possible from being open to cardholders as much as possible during the Covid-19 pandemic virtual and in-person events mixed with hybrid events. PPL held its summer reading program that attracted 140 readers aged 4 to 13. The program was centered on the theme “Tails and Trails,” which is a play on the word tails for fairy tales, folk tales, tall tales and animal tails. Each year, the Nassau Library System creates a different summer reading theme. The participating libraries in the county craft graphics and handouts related to the theme. In august, there was an end of program that celebrated the readers with certificates and prizes. HWPL offered a gamut of children and adult programming. “The lectures have been popular; story time has been popular but there have been difficulties with keeping kids in front of a computer screen,” library Director William Ferro told the Herald previously. “We are holding story time in-person and in our courtyard and continue to use social distancing.” PPL held all its programs on Zoom throughout the pandemic, which has its cons and pros, library

Director Carolynn Matulewicz said previously. “You cannot make the connection from Zoom; people connect with each other at the library, and on Zoom it is not always interactive,” she said. “The positive side is we cannot have 150 people at the library, but we can have them on a Zoom program.” The Levi Yitzchak Library Center, in Cedarhurst, has a Covid policy in place that includes being open for returning and borrowing books only. Masks are required and there are social distancing guidelines. The play area is not open for children or adults and at this time the library space cannot be used for reading or studying.

hrough the coronavius pandemic, life has been difficult for seniors, as many of the activities they take part in are not in service. The Center for Adult Life Enrichment in Hewlett, the Gural JCC, the Hewlett-Woodmere and Peninsula public libraries have kept programs running through Zoom and other virtual offerings. CALE Executive Director Lee Gerardi has also worked hard to keep tabs on the members and keep them informed of the daily programming. Mount Sinai South Nassau continues to serve community, breaks new ground By Mike Smollins When faced with an “unprecedented” situation in April 2020 as coronavirus numbers reached their peak, 383, the staff at Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital rose to the occasion and banded together to get through the difficult time. Now, staff is gearing up to continue the fight against the Delta variant. While many lives were lost to the coronavirus, the hospital celebrated the release of hundreds of Covid-19 positive patients who were released with a clean bill of health. At a time when front-line workers were stretched thin, the Oceanside community and many others came together to show their support, donating food to the hospital’s staff daily throughout the pandemic. With Covid-19 cases back on the rise and new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance announced on July 27, local hospitals are in full preparation mode. Dr. Adhi Sharma, chief medical officer at MSSN, recently discussed how people can protect themselves and their loved ones from the variant. Sharma said that Mount Sinai has seen an increase over the last week in their Covid patient census. Where the hospital saw one to two cases a day in June, they saw eight between July 29 and 30. Those new cases among patients have universally been seen in unvaccinated individuals. “The challenge with Delta is that it is extremely transmissible,” Sharma said. “Even vaccinated individuals are getting Delta and we are seeing that in our staff.” Sharma added that most of the cases the hospital has seen has come from travel. “We came out of the box, and we may have to go back in the box for a little bit,” he said. “That’s going to be challenging and I think we are going to see a lot of Covid cases as a result of that.” Before, during and after the surge of the pandemic, MSSN was committed to delivering standardsetting, patient-centered health care. It is one of the region’s largest hospitals, with 455 beds, more than 900 physicians and 3,000 employees. The hospital is an acute-care, not-for-profit teaching hospital that provides state-of-the-art care in cardiac, cancer, orthopedic, bariatric, pain management, mental health and emergency services. It is a designated Stroke Center, boasts Long Island’s first and only Gamma Knife® and Novalis Tx™ radiosurgery technologies for superior cancer care,

expert orthopedic services, and emergency and elective angioplasty. MSSN has been designated as an Accredited Bariatric Surgery Center by MBSAQIP and is also a recipient of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s “Get With The Guidelines®”-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite. MSSN’s beautiful North Addition houses two 36bed medical surgical units, a 36-bed inpatient behavioral health unit and comprehensive maternity services center with 26 private postpartum rooms, spacious labor and delivery rooms and a neonatal intensive care unit. The hospital’s Emergency Services department is one of the largest and most advanced on Nassau County’s South Shore. Designated a regional stroke center and Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons, the department houses 35 treatment rooms and specialty care, including a high-speed CT-scan and x-ray facility, pediatric emergency room and psychiatric emergency room. MSSN is the only hospital on Nassau’s South Shore permitted to perform angioplasty in an emergency or an elective basis. In the event you or a loved one need angioplasty, it can be performed on the spot at the hospital’s Center for Cardiovascular Health, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And services are expanding, as on June 22, MSSN celebrated the groundbreaking for its J-Wing on its Oceanside campus. The wing will serve as the cornerstone of hospital’s $400 million capital expansion to increase health-care services. Projected to open in 2023, the $130 million J-Wing will stand at four stories and 100,000 square feet. The chairman of Mount Sinai’s board of directors, Joe Fennessy, said the board re-evaluated old plans for the facility, updating the infrastructure to match the evolving trends in health care. “We began to reimagine what this hospital should be, and we realized to best serve the needs of our community, we had to be something different,” he said. For more information about MSSN and its services, call (877) 768-8462 or (516) 632-3000, or go to www.southnassau.org. We encourage you to “like” them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.

Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles, with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Donald Clavin — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
