No one saw the coronavirus pandemic coming.

No one expected it to last more than a handful of weeks. No one could have imagined the terrible death toll it would exact.

The past 17 months tested all of us beyond our limits. Rockville Centre, however, remains strong.

The village is full of fighters. Now we understand just how resilient we, as a community, are.

Just as we saw in Superstorm Sandy's wake in 2012, neighbors have been helping neighbors Stuart throughout the Covid-19 crisis, delivering food and medical supplies to vulnerable residents, Richner providing meals for the jobless and just checking in on one another.

Thankfully, as of this writing in late July, some 80 percent of Nassau County residents had received at least their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccines, and the infection rate had dropped locally to less than 2 percent. Let us hope and pray it remains at or falls below that level so people remain safe, and we can continue our successful reopening of the economy. That will depend on all of us doing our parts — most importantly, scheduling a vaccination appointment if you have not already made one.

Throughout the crisis, the Rockville Centre Herald has provided invaluable news to the community, including information on institution closings, new safety protocols and, unfortunately, remembrances of lives lost. I want to thank our journalists for their commitment to the community. Our staff, categorized as essential workers by Governor Cuomo, have been out in the field regularly, even during the height of the pandemic, to ensure people who work and live in Rockville Centre had access to the best and most up-to-date information.

Additionally, Richner Communications, the parent company of the Rockville Centre Herald, was proud to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in small business marketing grants to entrepreneurs across the South Shore, including many in the community. We know small businesses are the lifeblood of any community — especially Rockville Centre — so we are hopeful these funds will help your favorite stores and restaurants get back on their feet.

In this edition of our annual community guide, we look at all that is wonderful about Rockville Centre, at the same time that we examine what has changed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mount Sinai South Nassau continues to serve community, breaks new ground

By Mike Smollins When faced with an “unprecedented” situation in April 2020 as coronavirus numbers reached their peak, 383, the staff at Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital rose to the occasion and banded together to get through the difficult time. Now, staff is gearing up to continue the fight against the Delta variant.

While many lives were lost to the coronavirus, the hospital celebrated the release of hundreds of Covid-19 positive patients who were released with a clean bill of health. At a time when front-line workers were stretched thin, the Oceanside community and many others came together to show their support, donating food to the hospital’s staff daily throughout the pandemic.

With Covid-19 cases back on the rise and new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance announced on July 27, local hospitals are in full preparation mode. Dr. Adhi Sharma, chief medical officer at MSSN, recently discussed how people can protect themselves and their loved ones from the variant.

Sharma said that Mount Sinai has seen an increase over the last week in their Covid patient census. Where the hospital saw one to two cases a day in June, they saw eight between July 29 and 30.

Those new cases among patients have universally been seen in unvaccinated individuals.

“The challenge with Delta is that it is extremely transmissible,” Sharma said. “Even vaccinated individuals are getting Delta and we are seeing that in our staff.” Sharma added that most of the cases the hospital has seen has come from travel.

“We came out of the box, and we may have to go back in the box for a little bit,” he said. “That’s going to be challenging and I think we are going to see a lot of Covid cases as a result of that.”

Before, during and after the surge of the pandemic, MSSN was committed to delivering standardsetting, patient-centered health care. It is one of the region’s largest hospitals, with 455 beds, more than 900 physicians and 3,000 employees.

The hospital is an acute-care, not-for-profit teaching hospital that provides state-of-the-art care in cardiac, cancer, orthopedic, bariatric, pain management, mental health and emergency services. It is a designated Stroke Center, boasts Long Island’s first and only Gamma Knife® and Novalis Tx™ radiosurgery technologies for superior cancer care,

expert orthopedic services, and emergency and elective angioplasty. MSSN has been designated as an Accredited Bariatric Surgery Center by MBSAQIP and is also a recipient of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s “Get With The Guidelines®”-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite.

MSSN’s beautiful North Addition houses two 36bed medical surgical units, a 36-bed inpatient behavioral health unit and comprehensive maternity services center with 26 private postpartum rooms, spacious labor and delivery rooms and a neonatal intensive care unit.

The hospital’s Emergency Services department is one of the largest and most advanced on Nassau County’s South Shore. Designated a regional stroke center and Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons, the department houses 35 treatment rooms and specialty care, including a high-speed CT-scan and x-ray facility, pediatric emergency room and psychiatric emergency room.

MSSN is the only hospital on Nassau’s South Shore permitted to perform angioplasty in an emergency or an elective basis. In the event you or a loved one need angioplasty, it can be performed on the spot at the hospital’s Center for Cardiovascular Health, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

And services are expanding, as on June 22, MSSN celebrated the groundbreaking for its J-Wing on its Oceanside campus. The wing will serve as the cornerstone of hospital’s $400 million capital expansion to increase health-care services. Projected to open in 2023, the $130 million J-Wing will stand at four stories and 100,000 square feet.

The chairman of Mount Sinai’s board of directors, Joe Fennessy, said the board re-evaluated old plans for the facility, updating the infrastructure to match the evolving trends in health care. “We began to reimagine what this hospital should be, and we realized to best serve the needs of our community, we had to be something different,” he said.

Voters elected John Lyon as the first village president on Aug. 19, 1893.

As the 19th century unfolded, one of the most important events in transforming the hamlet of Rockville Centre into the thriving village it is today occurred when Robert Pettit, in 1849, applied to the United States Post Office for permission to open a post office in his general store. Several names for this postal address were rejected in Washington, including Smithville, Smithtown, and Rockville, but the addition of “Centre” created what the Post Office agreed was a distinctive-sounding designation.

Pettit had chosen the name to honor Mordecai “Rock” Smith, a Methodist preacher and community leader, whose father had operated DeMott's Mill. Smith was a blacksmith, a farmer, and the justice of the peace.

From its roots as a village for the Reckouackie Indians, to its settlement as Near Rockaway in the 17th century by Dutch and English pioneers, Rockville Centre grew and prospered.

The arrival of the railroad in 1867 heralded the entry of Rockville Centre into the modern era. It was now possible to get into New York City faster and more frequently than had ever

been possible by stagecoach or ship.

The growth of the region, and the importance of Rockville Centre to the area's economy, is also highlighted by the founding, in February 1891, of the Bank of Rockville Centre, the first commercial bank operated on the South Shore. The bank occupied the corner of Merrick Road and North Village Avenue, and by 1929, Rockville Centre had earned a reputation as a leading financial center for the Island.

Rockville Centre’s volunteer fire company was founded in 1875, and a public library, which opened in 1882. South Side High School, the first school of its kind on Long Island’s South Shore,alsoopenedin1892onthepropertythatisnowVillageHall.Ayear later, the residents took the momentous step of approving incorporation during an election at Antheneum Hall on July 15, 1893. There were 219 votes — 139 in favor of incorporation, 79 against and one blank.

Many deemed independence from the Town of Hempstead and Queens County — Nassau County was formed in 1899 after the division of Queens County — necessary to provide proper electric, water, street and safety services that the South Side Observer wrote “can only be supplied by village government.”

collector. The title of president for the village's chief elected official was changed to mayor in 1925, during the tenure of Charles Richmond.

The advent of residential development in the early 1920s resulted in the creation of a Building Department, and sewers were installed later that decade. In 1926, the village installed traffic lights, and by 1928, the Police Department was completely motorized.

By its 40th anniversary in 1933, the village had six fire companies and 33 police officers. The diversity in the style and the beauty of architecture at that time earned Rockville Centre the name "The Village of Homes."

The growth of suburbia following the Second World War brought growth to Rockville Centre, too, and by the mid-1950s, village residents could boast of a year-round recreation facility. The success of this municipal service led to the building of the John A. Anderson Recreation Center in 1962 and the extension of services to the Martin Luther King Community Centre in 1981.

Today, more than 24,000 residents enjoy life in a thriving community of 3.3 square miles, with roughly 9,200 housing units, more than 400 retail and service shops as well as professional and corporate offices, seven parochial and public schools, a college, and 15 diverse religious denominations. There are more than 150 acres of parks, ball-fields and playgrounds and a municipal government that provides a comprehensive range of services.

The Lotz Hotel opened with 200 people in attendance. At three stories high, it was the tallest building in Rockville Centre at the time.

The Rockville Centre Institute opened. The school prepared students for either business or college.

Atheneum Hall held its grand opening.

The Bank of Rockville Centre Trust Company was established.

The former airfield at Rockville Centre opened.

The Nassau Hebrew congregation’s shul was built. It eventually grew into Temple B’nai ShalomBeth David.

The first girls’ athletic meet, a precursor to Red and Blue, was held.

Hempstead Lake State Park was formed.

• 1935

Central Synagogue of Nassau County was organized.

• 1950

The first LIRR train to run on the overhead viaduct pulled into the station.

The Rockville Centre Police Department was established.

Horace L. Allen was elected as the first mayor of Rockville Centre.

Two Long Island Rail Road trains collided on the tracks in Rockville Centre near Banks Avenue, killing 29 people and injuring 115.

South Side High School moved from its second location, which is now South Side Middle School, to its current site on Shepherd Street. It was designed to house 1,000 students.

St. Agnes Parish became the seat of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Pope Pius XII made Rockville Centre an Episcopal city, and St. Agnes Church a cathedral.

• 1987

The village founded the Rockville Centre Community Fund, a notfor-profit charity that helps those in need, including seniors, single parents and victims of disasters.

The village created a Department of Recreation.

• 1955

The Dominican sisters opened Molloy Catholic College for Women on Hempstead Avenue, which is now Molloy College.

• 1968

The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke to an audience at South Side Junior High School about civil rights. He died nine days later.

South Side High School celebrated 100 years of Red and Blue. The nearly all-female event involving songs, sports and spirit began in 1917, at a time when girls were not allowed to play high school sports.

The Washington Spirit selected Crystal Dunn, a South Side High School soccer star, with the first overall pick of the College Draft.

he Rockville Centre School District is one of the best in the state, with widely recognized and honored faculty members, administrators and educational programs.

South Side High School has previously been named one of the best schools in the country by Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report and many other rating groups.

There has recently been a change in leadership, as June Chang took on the role of superintendent on July 1, 2020, replacing longtime Superintendent Dr. William Johnson, who retired.

Over the past four decades, programs were created at the schools that are celebrated around the country, and that help students achieve their best. Students at the high school take International Baccalaureate courses in English and history, which challenge them and help them learn critical-thinking skills. Many other students go on to take more IB classes and graduate with an International Baccalaureate Diploma. Nearly all South Side students graduate, and many go on to four-year colleges.

The school underwent great challenges in 2020 and 2021 amid the coronavirus pandemic, first closing entirely and switching to a remote option before welcoming back a few students at a time and eventually returning to normal.

“We worked extremely hard to get to this point,” Chang said this past March upon some students returning, noting that conversations about bringing students back began in July 2020.

Rockville Centre is also home to St. Agnes Cathedral School, one of the largest Catholic elementary schools on Long Island. Hundreds of Rockville Centre students attend St. Agnes kindergarten through eighth grade, and often go on to attend Chaminade or Kellenberg high schools.

Red and Blue

South Side’s legendary tradition

By Jill Nossa Songs are sung, sports are played and spirits are high at South Side High School’s annual Red and Blue competition, which is still going strong after 104 years. Last March, the event was one of the last held in the South Side gymnasium before the coronavirus pandemic caused the schools to close for the rest of the school year.

Rockville Centre’s Red and Blue goes way back to its humble beginnings in 1916, a time when girls were not allowed to participate in high school team sports. The long-running tradition was changed up a bit after male students were allowed to participate, but the event still mainly features female high school students.

In March 2020, the victory went to the Blue Team with a final score of 52 to 47, coming back after a loss to the Red Team in 2019. Over the course of the three nights of dancing, skits, songs, relays and athletic events, about 400 girls engaged in friendly competition, led by Red Team captains Jillian Schumacher and Katie Ernst and Blue Team captains Nicolina Mauro and Erin Testa.

Hundreds of people flocked to South Side High School to watch the events that kicked off on March 5, when the themes were revealed: Eyewitness Blues and RedTime Stories. The serious competition began on March 6 and continued on March 7, providing a showcase for the girls to reveal the work they had put in over the previous five weeks.

Under the direction of Megan O’Brien and Margaret Kelly, teachers at South Side High School, the girls, freshmen through seniors, spent hours every day creating and practicing their various routines.

“Every year, what stands out most among both teams is the amount of work the girls are able to get accomplished in a such a short period of time,” O’Brien said. “The dances, skit, songs, and prop all require specific attention. We are always impressed by how well students are able to balance the many responsibilities of Red and Blue in addition to their academic and personal commitments.”

Past team captains return for the weekend to judge the events, and the teams earn scores in each category. In 2021, the events were scaled back due to coronavirus restrictions.

“Red and Blue is a tradition that is important not only at South Side and with decades of alumni, but also with the community of Rockville Centre,” O’Brien said. “Many women who graduated from South Side return to this community and raise their families here, and their daughters in turn participate. The program brings together upwards of 400 girls who paint, sing, dance and compete in various athletic activities. It is an inclusive program that is used to emphasize unity, sportsmanship, empowerment, and school spirit.”

The team captains also emphasized that, while winning is nice, in the end it is not the point of the competition.

“My favorite part about Red and Blue is making new friendships, meeting new people,” Mauro said, “and creating a bond with every girl on the team.”

hroughout the year, the Village of Rockville Centre offers plenty of opportunities for families to come together and have fun, especially with pandemicrelated restrictions loosening.

There are events all year round throughout the village that highlight the reasons that it’s truly great: the community, the restaurants, the businesses and the individuals.

In February, the Rockville Centre Community Fund hosts its biggest fundraiser of the year, a night at Margaritaville. The evening features food, fun and live music. The fund was created in 1987 by former mayor Eugene Murray. It gives money and aid to Rockville Centre residents in their time of need.

Spring is a busy (and fun) time of year in the village. Things kick off with South Side High School’s annual Red and Blue competition. Get ready to see folks in Rockville Centre take sides, as signs spring up on houses and lawns and high school girls get ready for one of the biggest events of the year. Going strong for more than 100 years, Red and Blue is a color war that also fosters leadership, teamwork and school spirit.

As soon as the red and blue colors go away, the green comes out. March is also when the village hosts the annual Rockville Centre St. Patrick’s Parade.

The “parade that cares and shares” has been a staple in the community for nearly 30 years, and is also a fundraiser.

Each year, the parade picks one local, one national and one Irish charity to support. More than $1 million has been donated to dozens of charities since the parade’s inception.

One of the most amazing events around comes to Rockville Centre in May. It’s when South Side High School hosts Centre Stage, a musical production put on through an inclusive theater program that comprises both general education and special education actors.

Though the annual July 4 fireworks show was canceled for 2021 due to a law change regarding fireworks, there is hope for it in the future. The Romero family, Avril, Alesandra and Carmen, filmed the fireworks during a past show.

The Rockville Centre Library remained a valuable resource during the pandemic. Scrooge Mc Duck Wyatt Modansky received a bag of candy from Nora Ehrling during a holiday event in 2020.

19 At the end of May, the village pays respect to its fallen heroes with the annual Memorial Day parade. The event commemorates all those who Rockville Centre has lost. Each year, a different grand marshal, who is always a Rockville Centre veteran, is selected to lead the parade.

In July, the village celebrates its anniversary with an annual fireworks show, held this year at Mill River Park. What began as a celebration of the village’s centennial has become an annual event, with thousands of people showing up to watch the South Shore Symphony perform before being dazzled by an amazing fireworks display. This year, the village celebrated 125 years since becoming incorporated in 1893.

The fall kicks off with the Chamber of Commerce’s Food and Wine Festival. People from across Long Island come to Rockville Centre to sample menu items from the local restaurants and try wines and beers from local manufacturers and brewers.

The EAT.SHOP.ROCK. street festival exclusively features Rockville Centre businesses and performers, and is a fantastic time for everyone to see what the community has to offer.

In October, South Side High School gets the community together for Homecoming. The football team and the cheerleaders parade through the streets, joined by representatives from each of the school’s four classes and their themed floats. After the parade, the Cyclones take on one of their rival teams.

As the weather gets cooler, people flock to the village’s annual 5k/10k/Family Fun Run in November. Thousands of people come out to run the route that winds through the village’s streets.

Things close out in December with the village’s annual tree lighting at the Village Green.

Holiday songs and hot chocolate are available for everyone before one fortunate village resident gets to flip the switch and light up the big tree at the park.

So mark your calendars early.

Because no matter the time of year, there’s something fun going on in Rockville Centre.

Molloy College

olloy College, serving a student population of roughly 4,900 undergraduate and graduate students, offers degrees in a variety of academic programs.

When coronavirus hit New York in March 2020, the college moved courses fully online. Campus organizations and clubs remained active virtually, some helping the community during the difficult time before things normalized.

Students from the Molloy Nursing Student Association donated food to local hospital workers and wrote notes of encouragement to Molloy nursing alumni who were on the front lines of the pandemic.

The college’s Rebecca Center for Music Therapy and Mental Health and Wellness Center engaged with its patients remotely, offering vital, continuing services to people in the community with developmental disabilities or facing mental health struggles.

In May 2020, the college held a virtual graduation ceremony for its bachelor’s and master’s degree recipients. Then, in June, faculty and staff members, administrators and students said goodbye to 20-year president Dr. Drew Bogner as he retired.

But every ending means a new beginning, and Dr. James Lentini is Molloy’s new president. Now, he and the college are making significant changes to residence life and academics to keep the campus safe from Covid-19.

In July, Lentini and student ambassador Jack Ryan demonstrated a few of the many procedures the campus is implementing to keep everyone

healthy, including separating desks in classrooms six feet apart and moving larger classes to an online format. With more people getting vaccinated, things have started to normalize at the school.

Campus life Students make a difference in Rockville Centre and other communities by working on projects like BoxTown, a program to raise social consciousness about homelessness. Lentini said outdoor activities, with social distancing, will be planned this year as well. The college typically works closely to help Bethany House, a women and children’s shelter in Nassau County.

Sports and academics go hand in hand at Molloy, where students are known for both their athletic and scholastic success. Almost 60 percent of athletes recorded a grade point average of 3.25 or higher.

Campus life in Rockville Centre is alive and vibrant, anchored by three residence halls and a student center that includes a performing arts theater, Madison Theater, though there are no shows currently planned becaue of the still-evolving Covid-19 pandemic. Usually, the theater hosts comedy, theater and music events year-round.

Mercy MedicAl center

A

member of Catholic Health Services of Long Island, Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre has provided compassionate, state-of-the-art medical care since 1913.

From nursing services to comprehensive stroke and cancer care, to women’s health services and weight loss surgery — top ratings in national assessments make Mercy the hospital of choice for patients 100,000 times a year.

In February 2020, Mercy staff and patients celebrated the opening of its new CHS Cancer Institute, which was previously a cancer center run in collaboration with Memorial Sloan Kettering.

Then, hospital staff at Mercy found themselves on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic in March. Mercy treated some of Long Island’s first coronavirus patients and saw some of the first Nassau County residents die from the virus.

At that time, Mercy suspended all visitations and elective surgeries. Those have now been lifted, with some restrictions.

Though a difficult time for Mercy, there was always support to be found from the community.

Donations of food and personal protective equipment flooded in as more and more locals wanted to help nurses and doctors in the hospital.

In mid-April, when the virus peaked, hundreds of residents drove by in cars and fire trucks for a parade to honor Mercy hosptial workers. They waved signs that were hung up inside the facility.

The quality of Mercy’s nursing services has been recognized with its designation as a Pathway to Excellence Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, as a facility that meets the highest practice standards essential to an ideal nursing practice environment.

Mercy has also been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology, and offers state-ofthe-art equipment, expert personnel, next-day screening appointments and same-day results in a newly renovated Radiology and Imaging Center.

Mercy is widely known for its leadership in weight-loss surgery and is a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, designated by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric

Surgery.

Mercy is home to the largest dedicated inpatient acute rehabilitation program on Nassau County’s South Shore, using state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to speed the recovery of patients who have suffered catastrophic illnesses and injuries such as stroke, spinal cord injury, amputation, major orthopedic surgery, severe disabling arthritis and acquired brain injury.

The hospital also opened a Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Wound Healing, which provides comprehensive care to those suffering from chronic wounds, as well as a Center for Sleep Medicine, offering the latest technology in a comfortable, contemporary setting.

ockville Centre is home to many parks and fields for playing. Residents have access to all of them, as well as to nearby county, town and state parks.

John A. Anderson Recreation Center Visit the John A. Anderson Recreation Center on Oceanside Road any time of the day, seven days a week, and you’ll find a flurry of activity for babies, children, teens, adults and senior citizens. The Recreation Department hosts more than 300 athletic, fitness, entertainment, educational and enrichment classes. Activities are tailored to every age group and interest, and are offered in fall, winter, spring and summer sessions.

The center was forced to close temporarily during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, it has since reopened. From September 2020 to June 2021, social distancing and safety measures were followed with all staff and participants wearing masks. As of now, masks are now not required, but always recommended. The center is hoping to reach one hundred percent capacity in September.

Continued from the previous page day, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., the center is a vibrant neighborhood gathering place that provides Rockville Centre residents with the tools and knowledge to support their dreams.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the center temporarily closed and operated as a popup food pantry to serve local families in need. Now, the center has re-opened, operating as a non-profit.

The MLK Center has established innovative programs to meet the ever-evolving needs of those in the community.

Many provide children with a safe environment in which they can learn and grow. The center is not only available for children, but also adults who are usually also welcome to participate in the many programs for them.

There are now 44 children enrolled in their summer program and new programs will be offered in September.

The food pantry is still open to the public every Friday. The MLK Center will be expanding soon to occupy the entire building at 150 North Center Ave.

very year, residents of Rockville Centre and neighboring communities come together at the Rockville Centre Farmer’s Market to enjoy fresh fruit, vegetables and other goods. Located in Long Island Rail Road Parking Lot Number 12 at Long Beach Road and Sunrise Highway, the market is a must-see for anyone looking to support local businesses while acquiring tasty food. Despite the coronavirus, the market is featuring more vendors than ever.

During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, the market enforced measures as per the New York State Department of Agriculture and Market’s Covid-19 reopening guidelines to ensure the safety of vendors and patrons. All customers were required to practice social distancing and wear masks. All booths were 10 feet apart, allowing more than enough space for vendors to practice social distancing. All stalls had to package their products before arriving at the market, except for farms. Samples were still available if customers want to try the products before buying them, but they had to come pre-packaged.

In recent months, things have returned to a more normal atmosphere at the market, which had encouraged preorders during the pandemic. Customers have been able to call into each booth to place their order ahead of their arrival to the market.

No masks are required if a patron has been fully vaccinated for 14 weeks or longer. If they have not been vaccinated, then masks are required. Hand sanitizer is also available for everyone to use.

Vendors include Spring Brooks Hollow Farms, Orchards of Conklin, Best Pickles, Jessie’s Empanadas, Italian foods from Papa Pasquale Famous Ravioli, Sharon’s Nut Butters, stuffed breads and other baked goods from Sal and Jerry’s Bakery.

ince its establishment under another name in September of 1875 by a group of young men, the Rockville Centre Fire Department has provided the community with peace of mind. As residential areas replaced the farms that used to populate the village, the fire department remained. It has grown to be one of the fire departments with the highest volunteer numbers in the state. Many of the volunteers are community members looking to give back.

Clocking in 500 hours as a whole in training, Rockville Centre Fire Department volunteers are truly committed to the department. Volunteers also carry out drills and equipment maintenance and preparation. Last year, the department had 20 engines, an antique engine, an aerial ladder truck, a tower ladder truck, a heavy rescue truck, an EMS first response vehicle, two ambulances and other equipment. Maintenance of these vehicles is crucial to the safety of the Rockville Centre community. Anyone who is interested in getting involved should call (516) 678-9320 to learn more.

Like most major institutions, owing to the

coronavirus pandemic, the Rockville Centre Fire Department had to undergo certain changes and like many local emegency and medical services, the department went above and beyond to help serve the community during the Covid-19 outbreak.

As first responders, the fire volunteers took extra precautions when responding to calls at the height of the pandemic to ensure they were not exposed to the coronavirus. If a risk was suspected or confirmed, firefighters wore N95 masks, protective eyewear and other gear in addition to their standard equipment. The fire department also enacted Emergency Order 2020-1 to ensure the safety of both civilians and the volunteers who risk their lives to protect them.

With coronavirus numbers decreasing, the department has returned to more normal activities, including hosting in-person events and festivities.

he Rockville Centre Police Department has 52 sworn officers and a support staff of 42 civilians, including dispatchers, neighborhood aides and crossing guards. The department is assisted by an 18-member auxiliary force that logs more than 2,800 hours of volunteer service a year. The police department supports a 900-hour professional training program for recruits. According to the department, the training covers areas such as the use of force, firearms, hazardous material handling, emergency vehicle operations and active shooter response to aid Rockville Centre’s 26,000 residents.

The department also runs

various educational programs for each major age group on a variety of topics, including travel and specialized crime prevention for seniors, burglary prevention and security surveys for homeowners and bus and bicycle safety for the younger crowd.

The Rockville Centre Police Department has recently developed a new police reform plan

and is currently focused on being more community-oriented by getting involved in community events.

The police department states its mission is: “to provide quality police service to the residents and visitors of the community in a professional, courteous and committed manner.” Through its specialty units, the d0epartment hopes to uphold its mission as it continues to serve the Rockville Centre community. The department helped the community in many ways during the pandemic.

Library remains vital resource

T

he Rockville Centre Public Library has continued to provide services to the community throughout the Covid-19 pandemic through virtual programs and a new curbside pickup service. The library has continued to offer these services in addition to in-person and hybrid programs upon its return to normalcy.

The public library has a large media collection to choose from, including CDs, video games, audio books, preloaded Kindles for all ages, Rokus and various streaming services. Not only that, but databases and online archives are also available to facilitate research. Computers and Wi-Fi are generally accessible to all, and the librarians are always courteous and eager to lend a hand.

The library is run by a five-member board of

trustees, who are elected to their seats by the public. The current board comprises President Michael Ludwig, Vice President Rebecca Nothel, Secretary Susanne Morahan and Trustees Nadine Kelley and Melissa Sorvillo.

According to Library Director Catherine Overton, patrons have expressed their gratitude for the services the library offered during the pandemic, providing them with personal connections. “The library will continue to be here to offer community, education and support,” she said.

dults 60 and over in Rockville Centre and the surrounding communities have come to rely on the Leonard Sandel Senior Center to take part in fun events and programs tailored for their age group. For an annual fee of $125 (for residents of Rockville Centre, residents of other communities pay $275), members gain access to a variety of classes and programs. The programs can range from physical fitness classes like aerobics with weights and yoga, to mentally stimulating activities like book clubs and knitting. If you aren’t able to cover the fee, the center even offers confidential financial assistance through its social work office.

In addition to the programs mentioned, the Sandel Center, led by Director Chris O’Leary, offers seniors a variety of services they may not be able to access anywhere else. The licensed clinical social worker at the center’s social work office is available to assist Sandel members with Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, Able Ride and EPIC. The center also offers members the opportunity to arrange transportation to and from medical appointments. Weekly supermarket trips for those who need it are offered on Tuesdays as well.

The coronavirus initially caused the Sandel Center to be unable carry out its regular programming in-person, but things have ramped up in recent months. To keep members engaged during Covid-19, the center launched Sandel TV. Every day at

10 a.m. and 2 p.m., it broadcasted the programs members are usually able to attend. Segments can also be found online at the Sandel Center’s official Facebook page and website www.rvcny.us.

Town & County Nassau County Nassau County is governed by an elected Legislature, which is comprised of members from 19 districts. It includes an independent budget director who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters. Residents may submit petitions for proposed laws that legislators must consider. Legislators serve two-year terms.

The county executive — currently Democrat Laura Curran — serves a four-year term and is the chief administrator. Nassau also has an elected comptroller, currently Jack Schnirman; acting district attorney, Joyce Smith; and a county clerk, Maureen O’Connell.

Town of Hempstead

The Town of Hemp-

stead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles, with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads.

Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Don Clavin — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office.

The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget.

Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
