Danny Monge gives back through Riverdale Project By MICHAEL HINMAN or 13 minutes, the only thing separating Danny Monge from sure death was the stamina of his wife pounding relentlessly on his chest. Over. And over. And over. And over. It was July 30. Danny’s community service activity — which he lovingly calls the “Riverdale Project” — was just getting off the ground. The next day he planned to bring much-needed personal protection equipment to a nearby nursing home. But for now, all Danny wanted to do was lie down and sleep. “Thank God my wife was home,” Danny said. “When she came into the room, she said I was making gurgling noises.” The first thing his wife Jessy did was call 911. After that, she needed to make sure Danny’s heart kept pumping. Chest compressions weren’t going to work, because he was lying on a bed. Keeping him alive was going to take something far more violent — punching his chest without a break. “She stayed strong,” Danny said. “They were concerned with brain damage, because my heart stopped beating. When I came to, that’s when she collapsed.” Once paramedics arrived, they were able to take over, using shock pads and everything else in the arsenal. But did Danny lose oxygen to his brain? Would he be the same man he was before he crawled into bed for a simple evening nap?

“When I came to, I was like, ‘Am I going to get out tonight?’” Danny remembers. “‘Tomorrow?’” Jessy is determined that never happen again. While she can never stop Danny from trying to give back to his adopted neighborhood, she can at least ensure he doesn’t over do it. Plus, giving to those who’ve already given so much — especially in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic — can be its own reward. And he does it with a little help from his neighbors, bringing in a little bit of money that he then turns over to a locally owned restaurant. And from there, he could show up anywhere people are working on the front lines, ready to give them a nice hot meal as a big thank you. While that’s typically nursing homes, hospitals, and police and fire stations, Danny has found himself putting something together for those delivering the mail, and even those ensuring there’s fresh groceries on the shelves. “We were putting something together for the Key Food workers” just off West 235th Street, he said. “They saw me setting up the tables and asked me what I was doing. I told them we were getting ready to serve all of them lunch. “They didn’t believe me.” As word about the Riverdale Project beings to circulate, more and more people don’t have to wait for RIVERDALE PROJECT, page 11

A whole lot of heart and a little giving RIVERDALE PROJECT from page 10 Danny or a volunteer to hand them a plate of food before they believe what he’s doing. The Riverdale Project already has raised more than $3,000. And while many of the restaurants Danny turns to for food want to donate, he says no — eateries are struggling through the pandemic, and the idea of the Riverdale Project is not just to help those on the front lines, but also those everyone depends on for a night out of the kitchen. The Riverdale Project itself was formed thanks to the coronavirus. “In the beginning, when the pandemic was bad, I was always checking on the elderly,” Danny said. “I put up on the Riverdale Facebook page that if anybody needed wipes or toilet paper when it couldn’t be found, the Rite Aid by me, they knew I liked to help people, so they would hold stuff for me. “It all kind of grew from there.” Bringing meals was just something that organically grew from the overall project. Many people were working around the clock, and at least at the beginning of the pandemic, it was hard to find restaurants that would deliver food. Now, once Danny identifies a group he wants to bring lunch to, he reaches out to get a sense of what their favorite restaurant might be. And from there, with a little help from donors, Danny makes it happen. Some of the places supplying food to these frontline heroes include Ben’s Market on Knolls Crescent, Nona’s Pizza in North Riverdale, and Dino’s Pizza on Mosholu Avenue, among others. Danny loves to help. He loves bringing people together to experience the joys of helping. And he loves seeing the surprised expression on the faces of so many working hard through this pandemic when he and the rest of his Riverdale Project team show up with something good and hot to eat. Whether it’s a heart attack, or even facing losing a foot because of diabetes — as he did at one point before he got his blood sugar levels under control — it’s going to take a lot to slow him down. And that’s because everything he does, he’s doing it for a higher power. “I don’t post this on the Riverdale Facebook page because there’s a lot of different personalities there, but I’m a Christian,” Danny said. “And I always consider what I do as work for God.”

P
andemic or not, people still get hungry. And Zachary Gruenberg’s hope is to feed others in a very sustainable
way. Newly armed with the appropriate degree, Zachary returned to his community with a love for sustainable food and eating. And he wants to share that love with others — one he says began in his
childhood. “I think that’s definitely my love language,” Zachary says. “I speak in terms of food. And I think (if) you sit down at a table with someone, it’s a very universal thing.” Zachary’s involved in several sustainable food programs. He’s contributed to mutual aid “food rescue” initiatives in the area, and is helping out at community gardens,

creating hyperlocal food sources. And even though he believes the pandemic has exacerbated food inequality and lack of access, Zachary also thinks it might present an opportunity to reintroduce his neighbors to having control over what and how they eat. And they don’t have to start a community garden to do that. “Whether it’s having a meal where you’re deliberately trying to source ingredients as locally as possible, or whether it’s going to a local farmer’s market, or just starting a little mint plant (on) your windowsill,” Zachary says, “there’s actionable steps that you and I can take to create more sustainable ways of interacting with food.” — Rose Brennan

UNSUNG HEROES VINNY GOMEZ: Stocking shelves, staying calm
A
t the beginning of 2020, no one could have guessed the supermarket would become the most exciting place to visit and get out of the house. But even before the days stretched into weeks, early in the coronavirus pandemic, the supermarket was a source of stress when shelves meant for paper goods and canned soup were left bare. But Vinny Gomez, the manager of Key Food supermarket on Johnson Avenue, didn’t get frazzled. “Somehow or another, we kept these shelves stocked up as best as possible,” he says. Vinny’s frequent posts to neighbors on social media let them know what he had in stock — paper towels, toilet paper, hand sanitizer — so they could head down to the store knowing what was waiting for them. Even as the months passed, customers stayed grateful to Vinny and his staff. “It’s always nice to have customers come in, out of the blue, just say ‘thank you for everything that you did,’” Vinny says. “Sometimes it’s a thankless job. We don’t expect everyone to come in and say ‘thank you.’” But Vinny isn’t the only hero. So is his crew. “I can’t handle every aspect of the store, so that’s why I have great team members here,” Vinny says. “They do a great job, all my department heads here.” — Kirstyn Brendlen

Shira Silverman helps us find some good eats
O
ne would think city folk wouldn’t think too much of farming, but Shira Silverman is someone who loves living in New York City, but can’t deny the power of having freshly grown vegetables on her family’s dinner plates each night. Shira manages The Y’s Sunday Market — originally at Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy, and now making its home at Riverdale Temple. Each week over the summer, Shira and her team bring farmers and neighbors together for healthy eating, while still doing something nice for the environment. When the coronavirus pandemic hit, there were fears the farmer’s market would have to be put on hold. But not on Shira’s watch. “It was a matter of getting all the pieces to fall together,” she says. “To manage to come up with a plan and present how safe it would be.” Of course, that would mean changes. Fewer people could be let in at a time. Those who were shopping would have to maintain safe social distances. But then again, a farmer’s market is something that’s outside, in the fresh air. There was room for shopping and food, but no room for pesky viruses. “I think we were all wondering whether it would retain that community feel,” Shira says. “But it has. People are very appreciative of the access to fresh food. But they’re also appreciative of the opportunity to get out and meet with other people. “That’s exactly what brings people back to farmer’s markets time and time again.” — Michael Hinman

ames Packes has been changing oil and tires for decades. Whether it was at the now-closed Riverdale Gas & Garage or Sun Corners, if you’ve needed work done on a car in the neighborhood, you’ve likely met James. That was all the better for doctors and nurses working through the coronavirus pandemic when they walked through the doors of James’ West 230th Street Riverdale Auto Clinic. “We have doctors and EMS workers and firefighters, we took care of their vehicles, took care of inspections, flat tires, oil changes, whatever they needed,” James says. “They were doing a great job for us, so we wanted to reciprocate it.” They took the necessary precautions — wearing masks and personal protective equipment when people came into the store, and James says he wasn’t too worried about getting sick. He was more focused on the community. “They were very grateful, they didn’t have to be told that we’re grateful for what (they) were doing, and we want to help you guys out, whatever we can do,” James says. “And we wanted to reciprocate. We’ve been here 75 years, we’re not new in the neighborhood. We want to help the people here. Whatever they needed, we helped them out.” — Kirstyn Brendlen

Neighbors proud of Kari Munoz
B
y day she’s a veterinary technician. But when she’s not clocked in, helping to keep our favorite pets healthy, Karina Munoz can almost always be found volunteering her time at Mission Helping Hand, Mercy Center, as well as original projects started by her and friends. In fact, it was her love for pets that inspired Kari to establish a pet initiative beginning last July – providing free exams and vaccinations to 20 cats and dogs every month. Originally from Washington Heights, Kari moved to the Bronx in 2005, and into Spuyten Duyvil just a few years ago. Volunteering has always been in her blood, thanks to her own personal biggest hero —
mom Jackie Munoz, who imparted invaluable wisdom to Kari growing up on how to present herself to others. “She supported me in everything, and every time of animal I wanted to rescue,” Kari say. But it was the coronavirus pandemic that really got Kari moving, teaming up with friend Kayla to deliver fresh meals to frontline workers at 15 different hospitals around the city. “People were saying we’re crazy,” Kari says, “but this is the least we can do for people who put their lives on the line.” — Pete Janny

J
oshua Brosz knew he wanted to take people’s minds off of the coronavirus pandemic early on. But he wasn’t quite sure how to do it. The solution to the problem, however, was hiding in plain sight. Joshua already was making chalk signs on the street for his day job. But instead of advertising, he channeled his artistic vision into something else. On his days off, Joshua travels to Henry Hudson Park, drawing
pictures on the pavement with his trusty chalk. He’s mostly been drawing flowers and birds lately, but he’s known to write uplifting messages, too. Joshua thinks the temporary nature of his art adds to people’s experience of it. “I like the fact that my art’s not permanent,” he said. “You see this piece of art, (and) not everybody gets a chance to see it. It’s gone after it rains. I think there’s something cool about that lack of
permanence.” Joshua mostly draws in front of benches in the park, so passersby can have a seat and spend time with something good — since there doesn’t seem to be a lot of good, lately. “I’m hoping it just gives them some peace of mind,” Joshua says. “There’s so much going on in the world right now, and most of it’s not positive. So to just take a break and enjoy something is important.” — Rose Brennan

In recent years, ARC • Developed a new website, to provide important information that is easily accesible to all • Kept everyone informed and up-to-date with pertinent information throughout the COVID-19 era • Convinced Con Edison to bring natural gas lines to Riverdale to provide a clean source of energy • Represented all co-ops and condos in negotiations for labor contracts with Local 32BJ • Lobbyed for NYS Property Tax Abatement for co-op and condo owners • Presented Conflict Mediation Techniques for Boards and Shareholders • Explained Fiscal Management and the Fiduciary Responsibility of co-op boards • Introduced Verizon FIOS to Riverdale as an alternative communication option to Cablevision • Advocated for the New York City Clean Heat Program in our area’s buildings • Has worked continuously with legislators to retain co-op board autonomy • Advised on How to Negotiate New Management Contracts • Sought FEMA funding from Congress for co-ops after Hurricane Sandy • Modeled a Fair Admissions Policy for Boards of Directors • Updated members annually on Legal Issues and Current Rulings from the Courts
