Negrin THE COVER Passion for the streets We drive them. We walk them. We live on them. We work, we play — every aspect of our lives can be tied straight back to a street. They are the heart of our community. You can't get anywhere unless you're on a street. In this year's Living in Merrick, we explore the very streets that make Merrick what it is. From the businesses, to the parks, to even the town square. There's a story behind every street, and we hope you'll enjoy these stories, learning more about the community all of us love.

The past two years were tough for Merrick, but its always-resourceful people came through once again, just as we did in Hurricane Sandy's wake in 2012.
Throughout the crisis, the Merrick Herald remained steadfast in informing everyone of the impact of the pandemic, and also all of the great things individuals, stores, police, re ghters, schools and community leaders were doing to keep moving forward. Herald reporters were at meetings, and talking to you and your neighbors, to paint a portrait of a hamlet that may have struggled at times, but one that also is winning.
In this edition of our annual Living In Merrick, we look at all that is wonderful about this lively hamlet. A special publication of your hometown newspaper, it s published in cooperation with the Merrick Chamber of Commerce. We are honored to mark another year as the chamber's ofcial publication.
The pandemic tested all of us beyond our limits. Merrick, however, remains strong. It is a community full of ghters. And as the pandemic shifts to endemic stage and we fully resume our lives, we are all reinvigorated and re-energized.

Neighbors helping neighbors. That s what Merrick is all about. And what it continues to be. We looked out for each other all through the Covid-19 crisis. Everyone stepped up during this challenging time: grocery stores and other necessary retailers, community organizations, civic leaders, local ofcials, etc. And we can never thank enough our health care workers for their sel ess dedication. Now we understand just how resilient we, as a community, are.
We hope you nd this issue useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the Merrick Herald 52 weeks a year. Be well and be safe. PublisherRichner

he Merrick nion Free School District boasts three elementary schools — Levy Lakeside School, Chatterton School and Birch School. Although separated by district-drawn boundaries, one teacher s lesson from her classroom on Bablylon Road — right next to Cammanns Pond Park — recently brought the community together. Ilene Fox, who teaches second grade at Lakeside, created a lesson for her students on inspirational doodling. Fox s husband, Allan — a musician, writer and artist — died unexpectedly in December 2021, and his book, Doodles, Vol. One, served as her inspiration for the session. The book encouraged spreading positive messages through simple drawings.

News of her lesson spread to Fox s colleague, Jodi Scavelli, a third-grade teacher at Chatterton on the oh-so-busy Merrick Avenue. Coming together over the online videoconferencing app oom, the classes created artwork, and together, learned about what it means to be kind and con dent. It was really beautiful the way it went through oom, both classes working together and sharing the screen, Fox said. The kids really got into it — they did these amazing doodles.Fox's lesson continued to student lives during Children s Mental Health Awareness Week last May when the district s social worker featured her class's eforts. For teachers like Scavelli, involving her students was an easy choice. When I started learning more of what Allan did, she said, I just wanted to bring it into my classroom.Lakeside and Birch School are located both just of Merrick Road, while Chatterton sits further north, across Sunrise Highway. Despite the many neighborhoods that sit between them, each school s commitment to spreading kindness was brought out by one, simple, inspirational lesson.
