No one saw the coronavirus pandemic coming.

No one expected it to last more than a handful of weeks. No one could have imagined the terrible death toll it would exact.

The past 17 months tested all of us beyond our limits. Malverne and West Hempstead, however, remain strong. They are communities full of fighters. Now we understand just how resilient we, as a community, are.

Just as we saw in Superstorm Sandy's wake Stuart in 2012, neighbors have been helping neighbors Richner throughout the Covid-19 crisis, delivering food and medical supplies to vulnerable residents, providing meals for the jobless and just checking in on one another.

Thankfully, as of this writing in mid-August, some 80 percent of Nassau County residents had received at least their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccines, and the infection rate had dropped locally to around 3 percent. Let us hope and pray it remains at or falls below that level so people stay safe, and we can continue our successful reopening of the economy. That will depend on all of us doing our parts — most importantly, scheduling a vaccination appointment if you have not already made one.

Throughout the crisis, the Malverne/West Hempstead Herald has provided invaluable news to the community, including information on institution closings, new safety protocols and, unfortunately, remembrances of lives lost. I want to thank our journalists for their commitment to the community. Our staff, categorized as essential workers, have been out in the field regularly, even during the height of the pandemic, to ensure people who work and live in Malverne and West Hempstead had access to the best and most up-to-date information.

Additionally, Richner Communications, the parent company of the Malverne/West Hempstead Herald, was proud to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in small business marketing grants to entrepreneurs across the South Shore, including many in the community. One of Malverne's most popular diners, Andy’s Place, closed in the early 1960s.

Malverne is one of the older, more established communities on Long Island. Dating back to the early 1700s, Malverne was originally settled by the Rockaway Indians with the current Ocean Avenue serving as an Indian path back then.

While many original settlers of Long Island were attracted to fishing industries, Malverne’s excellent location drew farmers.

The name Malverne originates from Malvern, England. Alfred H. Wagg, a vice president and general manager of the Amsterdam Development and Sales Company, and Ernest Childs, an executive of the Amed Chemical Company, contributed to the naming of the village in 1913. After Malverne became an unincorporated village in 1921, the village was transformed from rural village to suburban community.

The last farm in Malverne, Crossroads Farm at Grossman's, was acquired by the Nassau Land Trust in 2006 and continues to operate as the last working farm in the village.

Founded on Aug. 11, 1986, the Malverne Historical & Preservation Society, at 369 Ocean Ave., is filled with its own collection of vintage photos and items, with board members who can share the village’s history in detail.

survived until 2006, when owners Suzanne Benedict and Brian McTigue sold it to Alex Jacobson and Benjamin Haghani, and it was renamed the Lakewood Stables.

Jacobson changed the name to the New York Equestrian Center after the 2013 renovation.

Hall’s Pond Park, the largest in West Hempstead, is made up three contiguous parcels of land acquired by Nassau County between 1956 and 1970. It is one of several properties in the county that were originally designed for drainage purposes and later turned into public parks.

A name change of West Hempstead to Mayfair Park was proposed in 2000, but the idea was voted down.

The West Hempstead Historical Society — which celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2018 — has continued to build upon its collection of historical items, sharing the history of West Hempstead.

The hamlet of West Hempstead got its name after the Long Island Rail Road built a station on Hempstead Turnpike in 1891. The station was originally referred to as “West of Hempstead,” and soon after, the hamlet’s name became what it is today.

The community steadily grew over the years thanks to the establishment of its parks, schools and businesses. Chestnut Street School, the first school to be established in the district in 1913, celebrated its 105th anniversary in 2018.

In 1926, the Paramount Riding Academy — a training and equine rehabilitation center — opened In West Hempstead in conjunction with the creation of Hempstead Lake State Park. In the 1930s, ownership of the Paramount Riding Academy was turned over to Charles Heinsohn, who renamed it Lakeside Riding Academy, a name that

HISTORICAL TIMELINE •1643

Englishmen John Carman and the Rev. Robert Fordham secured over 120,000 acres of land on Long Island, including West Hempstead, through an agreement known as the Carman Deed. They negotiated with Sachem chieftain Tackapousha, along with five other native representatives, and traded just $100 worth of goods in exchange. Families that settled in West Hempstead were each granted 172 acres of land.

•1645

John Carman’s son was the first European to be born in Hempstead.

•1669

A group of New York colonists that included West Hempstead residents confronted the governor with a list of grievances, and slight improvements were subsequently made. The following year, a petition was sent to and rejected by an English court, an early sign of a desire for democracy in Hempstead.

•1775

Residents of West Hempstead, which comprised mainly of loyalists, released a statement declaring their loyalty to King George III.

•1784

North Hempstead seceded from the greater Town of Hempstead, angry with the support for the British Crown expressed by their southern neighbors.

•1644

William Kieft, the Dutch governor of New Amsterdam, issued the Kieft Patent, which created an independent, liberal government in Hempstead. The patent was part of the Netherlands’ effort to control Long Island and thwart England’s effort to do the same.

•1660s-1700s The Dutch and the British battled for control over Long Island, in which ownership alternated between the two countries. The struggle culminated in English control of the Island through a Royal Charter issued in 1702.

•1820s

School District 27 was created to serve children in the then rural area west of Hempstead.

•1853

Hempstead became an incorporated village.

•1875 The Hempstead census of 1722 accounted for 319 African slaves.

The slave trade reached Long Island by way of Virginia as early as 1626.

An accident on the South Side Railroad, the now-defunct line that was once a competitor to the Long Island Rail Road, killed seven. Known as the disaster at Woodfield, the wreck is remembered as one of the deadliest events in West Hempstead history.

The first recorded bloodshed on Long Island during the Revolutionary War took place at the Battle of Hempstead Swamp, where Tanglewood Preserve is located today. Following a botched attempt on the life of George Washington, a battalion of rebel soldiers were sent to Hempstead with the goal of arresting the perpetrators. The soldiers encountered a group of loyalists who attacked. Although no one was killed, George Smith, a member of the Tory Party — was shot but recovered.

Norwood Chapel built and began holding services; the chapel functioned for decades as the sole location for public assembly in West Hempstead.

•1897

A tornado touched down in the vicinity of West Hempstead, which damaged the old Woodfield Road school and generated a 50-foot high column of water at the Hempstead Reservoir.

•1790 •1802

First post office to serve most of the area opened.

George Washington, riding along what would become Hempstead Turnpike, visited Hempstead for his first tour of inspection.

•1812

Soldiers were encamped on Hempstead Plains during the War of 1812.

The great American poet and writer Walt Whitman served briefly as schoolmaster of the first school in West Hempstead, which then stood at the south corner of Nassau Boulevard and Dogwood Avenue.

•1864

Birth of Edwin Duryea, a major figure in the development of West Hempstead. Duryea served on the Board of Education and was instrumental in the school buildings of the Chestnut Street, Eagle Avenue and George Washington, respectively.

•1879

The South Side Railroad was shut down, following more fatal accidents.

•1891

Austin Corbin, president of the LIRR, named the modern-day hamlet “West Hempstead,” as it was west of the LIRR’s Hempstead. In 1893, the West Hempstead Branch itself was opened.

•1900s

A slew of prominent businessmen, politicians, artists and other elites had large, opulent mansions and estates constructed in West Hempstead. Two of such estates were the Van Dusen Estate, which once stood at 970 Hempstead Ave., with its chess piece chimney caps, and the Harry Munson Estate, which was a 20-acre property located on the north side of Hempstead Turnpike between Nassau Boulevard and Cherry Valley Avenue. Prior to the urbanization of West Hempstead, the hamlet had many such large estates.

The Victory Chemical Engine and Hose Company of West Hempstead was founded.

The West Hempstead LIRR line was electrified, and Hempstead Lake State Park was founded.

Trolley service on Hempstead Avenue began, which lasted until 1926.

•1913

New homes were rapidly being built north of Hempstead Turnpike, the result of a drastic increase in population that began in 1910 and lasted through 1960 as the Southern State Parkway and electrified railroad service made West Hempstead a popular destination.

•1939

The West Hempstead Westerners Fire Drill Team, made up of members of the Victory Chemical Engine and Hose Co. No. 1, which was incorporated in 1919, won the national fire drill competition.

•1947

Chestnut Street School expanded to 21 rooms.

•1951

The West Hempstead Beacon was founded by Sheila Hoegl Noeth (1912-2003).

Chestnut Street School, West Hempstead’s first schoolhouse, was opened.

At the start of the 20th century, West Hempstead began its nowcomplete transformation from a rural suburb into a highly developed area. The opening of the Southern State Parkway in 1926 played a large role in bringing masses of people to West Hempstead.

Opening of the West Hempstead National Bank, which printed over $200,000 in currency until stopping in 1935. The bank closed in the early 1950s.

The government purchased Hall’s Farm and Estate in order to construct the Cornwell Avenue School for grades kindergarten to six.

•1962

West Hempstead’s District 29 team won the Little League World Series (Senior Division) tournament in Williamsport, P.A., coached by WWII veteran and Purple Heart Award recipient Joe Sarcona.

•1973 •1932

Residents voted to name the third school constructed in the West Hempstead School District George Washington School in honor of the bicentennial year of the founding father’s ride along Hempstead Turnpike.

•1942

Members of the American Legion Cathedral Post 1087 dismantled a memorial to local veterans of “the Great War,” which had been dedicated three years earlier, to donate it as scrap metal to help the World War II effort.

At Echo Park, a monument was dedicated to all the American soldiers who fought “for the life, liberty, and happiness of this great nation.”

•1983

The West Hempstead Historical and Preservation Society was founded.

•2002

West Hempstead resident Joy Goldstein won the Long Island Championship Spelling Bee at 12 years old.

•2010 •1949

West Hempstead Post Office branch established.

A new real estate drive took off, characterized by an increase in apartments near transportation primarily for larger families that live in West Hempstead.

Henry Viscardi founded the West Hempstead-based Abilities Inc., one of the first businesses in the country to primarily employ people with disabilities, at the urging of Elanor Roosevelt.

Viscardi, who had two prosthetic legs, served as a disability advisor to eight U.S. presidents stretching from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Jimmy Carter. He also founded the National Center for Disability Services.

•1961

Hall’s Pond Park officially became a county park. Prior to 1961, the park was known as Wood’s Park, after original owner and Town Supervisor Martin Wood, and later Wall’s Park, after Martin V.W. Hall, son of Wood’s daughter Jeanette, respectively. Hall sold the pond to Charles and Eva Hall in 1921, hence the name.

•1967

The West Hempstead Public Library received an official, permanent charter. The library had existed in several locations before then, including half of a rented Victorian frame house at 251 Woodlawn Ave.; a brief stay at 323 Hempstead Ave.; and elsewhere.

•1975

Shooting and death of NCPD officer Matthew Giglio in West Hempstead.

•2000

A referendum held over changing the hamlet’s name to Mayfair Park failed.

•2007

The West Hempstead Public Library, at 500 Hempstead Ave., opened to the public.

•2013

Heather Senti was elected as chief of the Lakeview Fire Deptarment, becoming the first female fire chief in the history of Nassau County.

HISTORICAL TIMELINE •1700s

Prior to European settlement, Malverne was home to the Rockaway Indians, whose territory expanded into a good portion of present-day Nassau County and Queens. Present-day Ocean Avenue served as a pathway for the natives during this era.

•1790s-1810s Many of Malverne’s older homes were built during this period, some of which belonged to early families whose surnames — such as the Cornwells, the Nostrands, the Riders and the Wicks, among others — now mark the village’s streets.

•1780

Large properties purchased by William Wood became architectural landmarks of the area, of which none existed beforehand.

•1812

Original school lines were drawn.

•1815

The Wicks’ Farmhouse, at Wicks Lane, was built. A bell mounted on a post at the farmhouse was one of many in that was used to alert the volunteer Norwood Hook Ladder and Hose Co. of a fire.

•1833

Malverne’s first school, which only had one room, was built.

•1865

The site of the present-day Malverne High School was selected at the end of the Civil War.

•1895

The New York Bay Extension Railroad Company began running through Malverne; later, it was connected to other railroads in order to be part of the LIRR. It ran from Valley Stream to Mineola at the time.

•1908

Construction of the Malverne Union Free School District.

•1911

The Norwood Hook, Ladder, and Hose Company, the oldest organization in Malverne, was founded.

•1880s

Present-day Malverne was known as Norwood, or “Beautiful Norwood,” during this decade and prior. Norwood — encompassing two and a half miles — consisted of a tract of farmland and watered woods between Lynbrook, Valley Stream, Rockville Centre and Franklin Square.

•1902

All of Malverne’s railroad lines were consolidated into the Long Island Rail Road.

•1910

Service at the second Norwood Station on the LIRR, where the current train station stands, was ended.

•1911-1920

Roughly 150 acres of land was developed in Malverne. Driven largely

by Alfred H. Wagg’s Amsterdam Development and Sales Company, this kicked off the village’s transformation — which is said to have truly taken off in the form of a real estate boom in 1913 — from a rural community to a suburban one.

•1913

Malverne was given its name (changed from Norwood, which belonged to a number of towns in New York). Named after Malvern, England, the “e” in the village’s name was inadvertently added. In addition, “The Dinky,” a now-revered battery-powered car that connected Malverne with Valley Stream and the mainline, began operating and functioned until 1926.

•1920

Following World War I, a debate originated within Norwood over whether to become an incorporated village. Development had stalled during the war but picked up again when it ended.

When the administration upped spending on local services such as street paving, some residents resisted, arguing against the increase in taxation that allowed for these services to exist.

However, a majority supported incorporation, which prevailed in a vote.

Malverne officially became an incorporated village.

•1924

The Independent Party of Malverne, which would go on to play a major role in the village’s political history, was established.

•1920s

Only a half hour away from New York City, Malverne was a suitable location for a large population of vaudevillians, musicians and artists of all stripes who came to live in the village beginning in the 1920s and onwards.

•1923

Railroad service was electrified, providing adequate commuter service to the residents of Malverne, which led to prosperity in the community.

•1927

The Malverne Library was moved to its second home, a small building known as “the Shack,” on Hempstead Avenue. Beforehand, in 1924, it had been set up at the village’s train station, sharing space with the post office and the real estate office of Lucian J. Bisbee, the first village clerk, whom many consider to be a founding father of Malverne. The library would move another two times in 1929 and 1934 before settling in its current location, at Timeline continued on next page St. Thomas Place, in 1954.

Malverne’s library received a charter from New York state, which made it tax-dollar supported for the first time.

•1929-1930s

The Great Depression hit Malverne hard; a rise in unemployment, an inability for many residents to pay their taxes, scarcity of gasoline and more led to a decrease in public services. Mayor Hamilton Gaddis countered all of this by strategically upping the amount of taxes paid by the LIRR and other companies. He worked to cut costs while simultaneously not implementing major austerity. By 1937, Gaddis announced a 25 percent decrease in the village’s tax rate.

•1945-1950s

Economic prosperity came to the village in the form of new businesses, extra cars and more, all which stimulated population growth. WWII’s “victory gardens,” which were part of the all-out war effort, propped up as well.

•1947

The original Malverne Theater Company was established, and the state’s high school musical festival — which brought together 800 young musicians from both Long Island and Westchester — was hosted by the village. This one-off event exemplified how Malverne served as a hub for the arts, especially during the early- to mid-20th century.

•1951

Frank Britton Wenzel, the originator of a unique American style of “slapstick” musical comedy, was elected Malverne’s mayor.

•1951-1955

Under Mayor Wenzel, there was a renewed commitment to improving Malverne’s infrastructure and facilities. This included an upgrade in equipment for the fire department, the development of the Village Hall, beautification of parks in the village, and more.

•1954

Dedication of the present-day library, which highlighted its transformation from makeshift facilities to an all-glass building, was attended by over 1,000 people.

•1966 •1940

The village’s population was large enough to qualify for “first class” status, which staffed the administration with greater responsibilities.

A court order from the New York state education commissioner in 1963 that ordered the desegregation of Malverne’s schools took effect. The order also called on the rest of New York to desegregate, so Malverne served as a test case for the state. Soon, the rest of Long Island’s school districts began to desegregate.

Construction of the Malverne High School’s auditorium, where a number of musicals and plays, as well as civic events, were held.

Over 700 men from Malverne left to fight in World War II; 22 of them would not return.

•1946

On the 25th anniversary of the incorporation of Malverne, Gov. Thomas E. Dewey called the village “one of the best governed communities in the state.”

•1948

Donald T. Herber, superintendent of School District 12, donated a pipe organ in honor of those who served, and in memory of all those who perished during World War II.

The village’s 50th anniversary celebration included an interfaith service at the Presbyterian Church, during which representatives of the seven faith organizations present in Malverne presented the histories of their respective religious congregations. Many more parades, dances, ceremonies and other celebrations were held to to commemorate Malverne’s anniversary year.

•1953

The idea of creating a municipal flag was floated after the dedication of the William T. Harris Municipal Field in November.

Malverne artist Joe McIntosh and historian Van Allen collaborated to create the flag, and financing for the venture was handled by village Trustee Morton W. Stein.

Malverne remains one of the only villages in the country with its own flag.

•1960s

Malverne’s holiday lightings began, which includes the decoration of the area around the train station and along Hempstead Avenue by local civic organizations.

•1969

The Malverne Volunteer Ambulance Corps was chartered by the New York state. By the end of that year, the group responded to 65 calls; by 2006, the MVAC had responded to nearly 16,000 calls since its inception.

•1976

A year-long charitable effort on behalf of Billy McNally, a local teenager injured in an accident, raised over $17,000.

•1980s

Malverne’s rapxid growth began to decline; local projects were halted as a result, until the issue became a major political concern for a number of mayors.

•1987

The Independent Party, a powerful political entity throughout the village’s history, lost the mayoral election to Catherine Hunt, Malverne’s first female mayor, who ran with the Hometown Pride Party.

•2006

Crossroads Farm at Grossman’s — the last farm in Malverne — was acquired by the Nassau Land Trust.

•1981

Malverne High School’s basketball team defeated Tolentine of the Bronx to win the New York State High School Class B championship.

•1996

The inaugural Groundhog Day in Malverne, which also marked the 75th anniversary of the village’s incorporation, was presided over by former Mayor Joseph Canzoneri. Ever since, “Malverne Mel” and his winter or spring prediction has become a popular yearly tradition in the village.

he Village of Malverne is 45 minutes from the heart of New York City, and within 15 minutes of some of the world’s most beautiful white sand beaches.

Residents also enjoy the temperate Long Island climate — warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer than nearby cities and suburbs.

Since it became incorporated in 1921, the one squaremile village is widely known for its charming, small-town appeal, with lovely homes, quaint downtown shops and restaurants as well as beautiful parks.

The village also has many landmarks, beloved by locals and visitors alike. These include Crossroads Farm at Grossmann’s, the closest organic farm to New York City. The farm comprises five acres of land and hosts events throughout the year. Other landmarks include the Malverne Historical House, which preserves and displays Malverne’s history through the decades. Noteworthy village events include the Holiday Lighting, which draws admirers from throughout the metropolitan area who delight in the Malverne’s transformation into a holiday showplace, complete with an elf parade, photos with Santa, dance performances, horse-and-carriage rides through the village and more.

Malverne’s Memorial Day Parade is another major village event, at which dozens of organizations march through the village’s streets in honor of those who died for the country.

Some of the other popular annual events in the village include the Art Walk, the Summer Entertainment Series and the Fall Festival and Classic Car Show. While many of the village’s spring and summer events were cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the village has brought back many of their events this year as part its 100th anniversary celebration.

A five-member village board governs Malverne, including Mayor Keith Corbett and four trustees. The heart of the village’s government is located at Village Hall, 99 Church St. in Malverne.

Malverne is served by the Malverne Police Department.

The police chief is John Aresta. The Malverne Volunteer Fire Department has served for more than 100 years and is at 30 Broadway. Its chief is Richard Bopp.

The village also has its own Department of Public Works, which provides sanitation management, village beautification and road repairs, among other services.

There are four public schools and two parochial schools in Malverne. In addition, there is a middle school and two elementary schools.

One of the village’s many celebrities is Malverne Mel, the groundhog weather prognosticator who makes an appearance each Feb. 2.

I

The charming history of Malverne Mel

n most places, January marks the beginning of several long winter months. In Malverne, however, it’s the prep period for a signature village event: Groundhog Day with Malverne Mel. The occasion is a tradition started in 1996 by former Malverne Mayor Joseph Canzoneri and Barry Manning, editor of the Malverne Times, which became the Malverne/West Hempstead Herald.

Canzoneri acted as the event’s master of ceremonies until Tony Panzarella became the mayor in 1999. With each subsequent mayor, the event grew. A petting zoo and even a wife for Malverne Mel — Malverne Melissa — was added into the mix in 2003. Melissa relieved Mel of his prognostication duties for some unknown reason in 2007.

Almost every year thereafter was marked by another bit of folklore that became ingrained into Malverne’s history. Not too long after their marital union, Melissa and Mel had a baby – another Malverne Mel – who took the reins as the village’s chief

prognosticator in 2008.

In 2011, the village canceled its Groundhog Day ceremony for the first time due to an ice storm.

Not wanting to miss the important event, Mel became the first groundhog to phone in his prognostication. He told former Mayor Patti McDonald at village hall that he predicted an early spring.

In February 2020, with cloudy skies and the temperature in the mid-30s, Malverne’s annual Groundhog Day with Malverne Mel continued its new tradition. Previously, the village gathered at Chester A. Reese Veterans Memorial Park by the gazebo on Church Street to hear Malverne Mel’s prognostication on whether we’ll have an early spring or six more weeks of winter. In recent years, residents come together in the greenhouse at Crossroads Farm.

This year, the village held a modified version of the event at Village Hall, which was broadcast to residents on Malverne TV.

Malverne High School kicked off its outdoor intramural program on October 2020.

C

onsisting of a primary school, intermediate school, middle school and high school, the Malverne Union Free School District has set ambitious goals since it began as a single schoolhouse more than 160 years ago.

Since then, Malverne has seen its school district grow in every respect.

In March, the district transitioned to online learning because of the coronavirus pandemic. At Malverne’s primary and intermediate schools, students in every grade have engaged in a variety of print and digital activities, and used learning platforms such as Class Dojo, SeeSaw, Remind and WebEx to communicate virtually with their teachers. In addition to classroom assignments, district leaders have encouraged students to keep up with phys. ed., music, art and technology through other programs each week.

Middle and high school students have used OneNote, Edmodo and Microsoft Teams, among other virtual learning platforms.

At the Howard. T. Herber Middle School, there are diverse programs, including a full roster of clubs so youngsters have an opportunity to explore various interests.

Malverne High School is one of the most effective secondary schools in the country. In May 2020, the high school was ranked on the U.S. News and World Reports Best High Schools list for the second year in a row. Not only is Malverne High School ranked in the top 11 percent of schools in the nation, but very few schools on the list share Malverne’s demographics.

It was a sea of blue during Our Lady of Lourdes School’s graduation ceremony for the class of 2021 in June.

P

arochial schools have been woven into the fabric of Malverne and West Hempstead for decades. The goals for many of the parochial schools in both communities are the same: to promote an equal opportunity for all students as they journey to increase their knowledge, both academically and spiritually.

Students at all of the parochial schools take part in various activities throughout the year both in the classroom and in their communities where they support their neighbors. For instance, the Student Council at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Malverne annually takes part in a clothing drive.

The school also takes part in several activities as part of Catholic Schools Week every January. In March 2020, OLL’s faculty and staff members took part in a parade to celebrate school members during the pandemic.

Students from Grace Lutheran School in Malverne take part in numerous events in the village. At the start of each school year, Grace Lutheran holds a Welcome Back Sunday ceremony, in which people get to explore their school grounds. After 61 years, St. Thomas the Apostle School in West Hempstead permanently closed in June.

With numerous parochial schools to choose from, students in Malverne and West Hempstead have the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge and faith.

est Hempstead is a Nassau County hamlet rich with history, parks, numerous public transportation options and other amenities that have been drawing residents and businesses to the area for years.

The hamlet has several business districts, including Hempstead Avenue, Woodfield Road and Hempstead Turnpike, all of which offer a mosaic of different restaurants, convenience stores and more that reflect the diverse needs and interests of residents. The area has a strong Orthodox Jewish community, as well as many residents from Western Europe and other areas across the globe.

One of the hamlet’s many gems is Hall’s Pond Park, the county’s 11-acre retreat, which is the largest in West Hempstead, at the corner of Nassau Boulevard and Hempstead Avenue. The park includes a duck pond, playground and walking paths, which attract children and adults, and is a gathering place for events hosted by the West Hempstead Community Support Association, the West Hempstead Lions Club, the Police Athletic League and many more. The centuryold Hempstead Lake State Park is another hamlet treasure, with tennis and basketball courts, horse trails, fishing ponds, a new playground and a carousel.

Echo Park, which offers indoor and outdoor pools, a diving pool, saunas and a fitness center, is located on Nassau Boulevard and is open to town residents.

In 2018, the town renovated the park as part of its refurbishment project.

New York Equestrian Center, on Eagle Avenue near Hempstead Lake State Park, offers escorted trail rides in the park, indoor lessons, horse boarding and other services, and is home to the only physical therapy business for horses on Long Island.

Another of the hamlet’s main gathering hubs is the West Hempstead Public Library, which offers programs for all ages throughout the year in its lower level community rooms. The library transitioned to virtual programs in March 2020 with plans to resume inperson activities this fall.

There are five public schools in West Hempstead: a high school, a middle school, an intermediate school, a primary school and a kindergarten center. The hamlet is also home to the Gersh Academy, a school for children on the autism spectrum, and several parochial schools.

It’s all happening at the farm

C

rossroads Farm at Grossman’s host a number of family-friendly events throughout the year.

Each spring, the farm holds its annual opening-day ceremony to kick off its Barnyard Event Series. From facepainting to live music, the celebration features activities and entertainment.

Crossroads was forced to cancel its annual celebration in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, once it was deemed as essential, they continued operations with new safety restrictions. Part of its new programs was the Farmers Market, which is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The farm, which is operated by Nassau Land Trust — a nonprofit that preserves land throughout Nassau County — has undergone several renovations in recent years. Cornering Hempstead and Morris Avenue the farm was originally coordinated by the Grossman family for over a century. This landmark of Long Island agricultural tradition was bought by the county with the help of the Nassau Land Trust in 2006. Since then, the land and buildings have been revived, and the farm is certified by the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York as they continue to provide and promote organic and sustainable agriculture within the village. The most recent was a bulletin board for community events, which was installed by Boy Scout Troop 24.

The celebration, which also recognizes Earth Day, gives residents a chance to learn more about the farm’s educational programs. Every week, students from Malverne and Valley Stream visit the facility to take part in its environmental programs, which include Sow to Grow, in which children learn how to block soil and plant seeds. As part of its Barnyard Event Series, the farm features a Food Truck Rodeo, a three-part series that includes music, different food trucks, local breweries and games for children.

he West Hempstead Union Free School District recognizes the value of each student. It is dedicated to the success of each student based on the highest standards of excellence in education. The school district started their learning-from-home initiative in March 2020.

Students have used numerous apps and web programs for online learning. Teachers have held videoconferences to share tips and teach lessons, and staff members have created videos for their schools, turning a challenge into an opportunity to enhance learning opportunities. Teachers have implemented a more rigorous and interactive program of instruction, along with more interdisciplinary learning opportunities.

The legal name of this school district is the West Hempstead Union Free School District. The boundaries of the district have been set under state law. The State Education Department maintains a close check on standards and what has become state law through mandates of the State Legislature. The state allows a local Board of Education to set whatever additional policies may be deemed necessary for the proper function of the district’s schools.

he Lakeview Fire Department is an all-volunteer department with over 50 members.

The department covers from Maple Avenue to Main Street and Tanglewood Preserve. It also covers from exit 17 through 19 on the Southern State Parkway. In addition, the department supplies mutual aid to the Elmont and Lawrence/Cedarhurst fire departments and assists the Hempstead, Rockville Centre, Malverne and Lynbrook fire departments. Its current Chief of Department is James Galia.

he West Hempstead Fire Department is also an all-volunteer department with several dozen members. The department covers all of West Hempstead, north of Maple Avenue. In addition, the department supplies mutual aid to the nearby neighboring communities. Its current Chief of Department is Michael Vogt.

he 5th Precinct covers West Hempstead, as well as the communities of Elmont, Franklin Square, Garden City South, Lakeview, Malverne Park, Malverne Oaks, North Lynbrook, North Valley Stream, and Floral Park.

The Nassau County Police Department’s Auxiliary Police aids the county police in keeping West Hempstead safe. The auxiliary police comprises dedicated volunteers who: • Help prevent and deter criminal activity by routine patrols in marked Auxiliary Police vehicles.

• Ensure the safety of residents during various community events.

• Manage traffic at parades and special events such as the Long Island Marathon, fireworks displays, holiday ceremonies as well as other community events and festivities.

• Provide assistance and support services during disasters and other emergencies.

Mount Sinai South Nassau continues to serve community, breaks new ground

By Mike Smollins When faced with an “unprecedented” situation in April 2020 as coronavirus numbers reached their peak, 383, the staff at Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital rose to the occasion and banded together to get through the difficult time. Now, staff is gearing up to continue the fight against the Delta variant.

While many lives were lost to the coronavirus, the hospital celebrated the release of hundreds of Covid-19 positive patients who were released with a clean bill of health. At a time when front-line workers were stretched thin, the Oceanside community and many others came together to show their support, donating food to the hospital’s staff daily throughout the pandemic.

With Covid-19 cases back on the rise and new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance announced on July 27, local hospitals are in full preparation mode. Dr. Adhi Sharma, chief medical officer at MSSN, recently discussed how people can protect themselves and their loved ones from the variant.

Sharma said that Mount Sinai has seen an increase over the last week in their Covid patient census. Where the hospital saw one to two cases a day in June, they saw eight between July 29 and 30.

Those new cases among patients have universally been seen in unvaccinated individuals.

“The challenge with Delta is that it is extremely transmissible,” Sharma said. “Even vaccinated individuals are getting Delta and we are seeing that in our staff.” Sharma added that most of the cases the hospital has seen has come from travel.

“We came out of the box, and we may have to go back in the box for a little bit,” he said. “That’s going to be challenging and I think we are going to see a lot of Covid cases as a result of that.”

Before, during and after the surge of the pandemic, MSSN was committed to delivering standardsetting, patient-centered health care. It is one of the region’s largest hospitals, with 455 beds, more than 900 physicians and 3,000 employees.

The hospital is an acute-care, not-for-profit teaching hospital that provides state-of-the-art care in cardiac, cancer, orthopedic, bariatric, pain management, mental health and emergency services. It is a designated Stroke Center, boasts Long Island’s first and only Gamma Knife® and Novalis Tx™ radiosurgery technologies for superior cancer care,

expert orthopedic services, and emergency and elective angioplasty. MSSN has been designated as an Accredited Bariatric Surgery Center by MBSAQIP and is also a recipient of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s “Get With The Guidelines®”-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite.

MSSN’s beautiful North Addition houses two 36bed medical surgical units, a 36-bed inpatient behavioral health unit and comprehensive maternity services center with 26 private postpartum rooms, spacious labor and delivery rooms and a neonatal intensive care unit.

The hospital’s Emergency Services department is one of the largest and most advanced on Nassau County’s South Shore. Designated a regional stroke center and Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons, the department houses 35 treatment rooms and specialty care, including a high-speed CT-scan and x-ray facility, pediatric emergency room and psychiatric emergency room.

MSSN is the only hospital on Nassau’s South Shore permitted to perform angioplasty in an emergency or an elective basis. In the event you or a loved one need angioplasty, it can be performed on the spot at the hospital’s Center for Cardiovascular Health, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

And services are expanding, as on June 22, MSSN celebrated the groundbreaking for its J-Wing on its Oceanside campus. The wing will serve as the cornerstone of hospital’s $400 million capital expansion to increase health-care services. Projected to open in 2023, the $130 million J-Wing will stand at four stories and 100,000 square feet.

The chairman of Mount Sinai’s board of directors, Joe Fennessy, said the board re-evaluated old plans for the facility, updating the infrastructure to match the evolving trends in health care. “We began to reimagine what this hospital should be, and we realized to best serve the needs of our community, we had to be something different,” he said.

Town of Hempstead

The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads.

Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Don Clavin — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a twoyear term, and the council members have four-year terms of office.

The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget.

Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.

S

ince the event began in 2017, the Malverne Chamber of Commerce’s annual Art Walk has become one of the village’s most popular events. This year, more than 100 works of art created by Long Island artists, professionals as well as hobbyists, were on display in numerous village businesses when the Chamber kicked off its fourth annual Art Walk in June.

Members of the chamber saw this event as a way a benefit the merchants, residents and amateur artists. The exhibition, which was canceled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, features artists of all ages throughout different parts of Long Island and New York, ranging from photographs to sculptures, paintings, pencil drawings and more. Much of the art is also for sale.

While it is one of the village’s newest traditions, the Art Walk is one of many ways that the Chamber of Commerce draws interest to the village.

he year 2020 was a challenging one, to say the least… but the West Hempstead Chamber of Commerce is sill standing! We were unable to sponsor any events last year, including our annual street fair.

Slowly things are returning back to normal, and 2021 Marshall W. Myers, will see our Street Fair President return in October, and live music will be featured at the Cherry Valley Shopping Center in July to kick off our “Taste of West Hempstead” promotion.
