publisher No one saw the coronavirus pandemic coming.

No one expected it to last more than a handful of weeks. No one could have imagined the terrible death toll it would exact.

The past 15 months tested all of us beyond our limits. Long Beach, however, remains strong. It is a community full of fighters. Now we understand just how resilient we, as a community, are.

Just as we saw in Superstorm Sandy's wake in 2012, neighbors have been helping neighbors

Stuart throughout the Covid-19 crisis, delivering food and Richner medical supplies to vulnerable residents, providing meals for the jobless and just checking in on one another.

Thankfully, as of this writing in late May, some 70 percent of Nassau County residents had received at least their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccines, and the infection rate had dropped locally to about 1 percent.

Let us hope and pray it remains at or falls below that level so people remain safe, and we can continue Long Beach’s successful reopening of the economy. That will depend on all of us doing our parts — most importantly, scheduling a vaccination appointment if you have not already made one.

Throughout the crisis, the Long Beach Herald has provided invaluable news to the community, including information on institution closings, new safety protocols and, unfortunately, remembrances of lives lost. I want to thank our journalists for their commitment to the Long Beach community. Our staff, categorized as essential workers by Governor Cuomo, have been out in the field regularly, even during the height of the pandemic, to ensure people who work and live in Long Beach had access to the best and most up-to-date information.

Additionally, Richner Communications, the parent company of the Long Beach Herald, was proud to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in small business marketing grants to entrepreneurs across the South Shore, including many in the city. s any given year passes, the Chamber of Commerce sees businesses come and go. As you can imagine, this last year has been more prolific than any in the past. The great news is that our membership has started to grow with a different kind of membership, newer, younger, The Long Beach more switched on to technology Chamber of and displaying a passion for Commerce business I have not quite seen Chairman before. Yes, many of our longIan Dandy time members navigated and survived the pandemic, and some even thrived, while others are coming back from the brink of failure with renewed vigor. Many businesses are working from home, and the chamber has advocated for our local city laws to be changed to improve business.

Change is coming The chamber welcomes our renewing members back and all the new members with open hearts and arms so that we can build a thriving business community back to what it was and better in the coming years. The summer is almost upon us, and Long Beach is “THE’” place to be during the warmer months. The chamber will begin our networking events in person again and will continue with the

most fantastic Boardwalk fairs, as well as offering new events and ideas to support businesses of all kinds. The chamber will also provide compliance training, such as the sexual harassment prevention training certification classes that are required by law for all businesses and continue to advocate for all our local businesses and entrepreneurs with the city and local government.

I would like to acknowledge our wonderful volunteer board members for all of their efforts this past year in advocating for local businesses, organizing events and their continued positive attitude to help Long Beach be a better place to live and work.

Our city is filled with some incredible businesses, from retail stores and great restaurants to web designers and local delivery companies. As you are reading this guide, I urge you to keep it on your coffee table or by your computer, and when you need something, anything, please consider buying it.

Sachem Tackapausha bartered with Hempstead settlers to share the "long white sandy beach.”

The land was used by local Long Island baymen for fishing and farmers for grazing and harvesting salt hay.

•1837

The Mexico capsized and sunk off Long Beach Island, killing 62 people.

•1869

Davenport (Deb) Wright, an oysterman, became the first resident when he built a bay house near what is now New York Ave.

•1906

Master-builder Sen.William H. Reynolds came to town — with a vision.

•1908

William Reynolds hired the Atlantic Gulf and Pacific Co. to dredge the channel that now bears his name in order to have better access for ships and to convert hundreds of acres of marsh into solid ground for the new City of Long Beach. Construction of the Estates of Long Beach signalec the beginning of Long Beach as a planned community.

The naming of our island on Stewart’s map.

The U.S. Coast Guard erected a

The Long Beach Hotel burned down. Senator Reynolds built the first boardwalk in Long Beach, a wooden walkway spanning 2.2 miles, from New York Avenue to Neptune Boulevard. Local lore has it that elephants built the boardwalk. They were, in fact, used to raze local shacks and haul lumber, but it was mainly a publicity stunt.

The house that is now home to the Long Beach Historical Society was built. The New Nassau Hotel, now renamed the Ocean Club, opened at National Boulevard.

It was followed by the Brighton Hotel, now the site of the Aqua at Lincoln Boulevard and the Ocean Crest Hotel, now the Hoffman Manor at Laurelton.

•1914 Lido Golf Course was designed.

•1919

The Walks and West End bungalow communities were created.

Mayor Louis Edwards was killed

by Alvin Dooley on Jackson Boulevard, which was renamed Edwards Boulevard in his honor.

•1950s

After World War II, the population expanded as soldiers returned home and moved to the suburbs to start families.

It was also a time of parades and beauty contests on the boardwalk.

•1967

The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center was founded and was renamed the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center after his death.

Long Beach dedicated its first school.

•1916

Irene and Vernon Castles, of international dance fame, filmed “Whirl of Life” in the dance hall named for them that was located on the boardwalk, just east of the Nassau Hotel’s tennis courts.

•1974

The New York Rangers signed to practice at the skating rink on Magnolia Boulevard.

•1920s

The city purchased the boardwalk and replaced the original wooden one with concrete.

•1927

Long Beach Hospital was dedicated.

•1937-38

A new wooden boardwalk was dedicated. It survived a major hurricane and stood for 75 years.

•1940-’50s

The advent of cheap air travel and air-conditioning had a negative impact on Long Beach as a resort community.

•1964

The old City Hall Clock Tower came down and was replaced with the current building.

•1960s-’70s Long Beach hit economic hard times. The rundown boardwalk hotels were used for temporary housing for welfare recipients and the elderly until a scandal around 1970 led to many of the homes losing their licenses.

At that time, government agencies were also placing mental patients into the hotels.

•1980s •1980

The Long Beach Historical Society was founded.

•1995

As many families prepared for the holiday weekend on Dec. 22, 1995, a devastating fire tore through the Sherwood House on East Broadway, leaving 150 families homeless.

•2009

The Allegria Hotel opened; it was the boardwalk’s first hotel in decades, followed by the Long Beach Hotel in 2013.

•2012

Hurricane Sandy devastated Long Beach, displaced thousands of residents, destroyed the boardwalk and shuttered the Long Beach Medical Center.

The city’s political leaders used real estate tax incentives to get many absentee landlords to sell their depressed oceanfront properties. Wrecking balls met with rundown buildings to make way for the condominiums and apartment buildings that line the boardwalk today.

•2001

Hundreds of residents crowded West Bay Drive along Reynolds Channel and other parts of the city, where they watched in horror smoke billowing from the World Trade Center during the attacks of 9/11. Seven Long Beach residents died that day, and many firefighters and first responders from the area developed, and later died from, illnesses from working on “the pile.”

•2011

Tropical Storm Irene caused significant damage and forced the evacuation of residents from the barrier island. The Quiksilver Pro New York surfing competition, nearly canceled after Irene, went on and attracted thousands of spectators to Long Beach.

•2013

The city continued its recovery efforts and marked the reopening of a new boardwalk. Many residents returned home and rebuilt, though many still face a long road ahead as they deal with insurance, FEMA and NY Rising.

•2015-16

South Nassau Communities Hospital established an emergency department at the former Long Beach Medical Center campus and announced plans to build a medical pavilion. The city announced more food options at new concession stands along the boardwalk, after decades of limited amenities.

•2018

Following a successful Pride on the Beach in 2017, the 28th annual L.I. Pride celebration will return in June.

•2020

The City of Long Beach is forced to close because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Food establishments, bars and health clubs were temporarily shut down during the height of the pandemic.

•2014

After decades of political wrangling and litigation, the zoning board approvesd a developer’s plan to build two 160-foot-tall apartment towers on the longvacant Superblock. A proposed 20-year tax abatement sparked residents’ ire and was rejected, leaving the property’s future uncertain.

•2017

The Army Corps of Engineers began work on a coastal protection project in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

•2019

he beaches will be open for Long Beach residents this summer starting Memorial Day weekend. However, the beach will have same rules to protect against Covid-19 as last summer. All visitors on the beach that don’t live together will be required to stay at least six feet apart. No groups of more than 10 people will be allowed to enter, and all group sports are prohibited. Anyone entering the beach must have a mask or face covering with them. In order to limit the amount of people at the beach only Long Beach residents will be allowed to purchase a beach pass temporarily.

City officials said they are waiting for more guidance from the state regarding Covid-19 guidelines. The City Council raised the prices of beach passes for all.

Beach passes can usually be purchased at the Gazebo near the Children’s Park and Ice Arena on the Recreation Campus at Magnolia Boulevard. The Gazebo is expected be open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Special operating hours for seniors 62-plus will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-9 a.m.

Passes will also be sold at the Beach Trailer at the southwest corner of Laurelton Boulevard and West Broadway. The office will be open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The beach will begin daily operation from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 27. Until then it will operate on weekends only from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Don’t delay! Avoid the rush. Purchase your passes now before those sunny, warm days arrive!

Who is required to have a beach pass?

Is there a family discount?

Yes. Family resident passes include two adult passes and for those children living in the household between the ages of 13 and 17. Children 12 and under are free, and children 18 and older and considered adults. Proof of birth date must be presented at time of purchase. Children born after Sept. 6, 2008, will not need a beach pass in the summer of 2021 and those born before May 29, 2003, will need to purchase an adult pass.

What do I need to provide?

Residency: Those wishing to purchase season/ daily passes at the resident rate must have an address in the City of Long Beach. The following terms of proof are acceptable: driver’s license with Long Beach address, check or bill or lease with Long Beach address and picture ID. Child: A child pass will be issued when proof of age is presented via birth certificate or passport or some other acceptable form of identification.

Senior Citizen: Driver’s license or passport indicating birth date on or before May 29, 1959.

Access Pass: Documentation indicating physical disability.

Military Rate: U.S. Government ID indicating holder is a member or has been honorably discharged from a branch of the United States Armed Services. LifeguArds get new heAdquArters

lmost nine years after Superstorm Sandy destroyed their former headquarters, the Long Beach Lifeguards received a new home.

The reconstructed building was installed in March and includes locker room, showers, first aid, radio and observation deck.

The project, which cost $1.2 million, will house a crew of about 150 lifeguards over the summer months.

The beach is expected to be open to swimmers beginning Saturday, May 23 on weekends, with daily operation beginning June 27. Lifeguards are on duty from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week throughout the summer season.

he enclosed Ice Arena is adjacent to the Recreation Center and is home to the New York Apple Core youth hockey team, the Long Beach Sharks junior hockey team, and is the former practice facility for the New York Rangers.

Hollywood Health Club returns after 20 years

ore than 20 years after selling their beloved gym to New York Sports Club, the owners of Hollywood Health Club reopened their doors earlier this year in hopes of regaining the momentum and acclaim they once had in the neighborhood.

Original owner Steve Dimond, who opened the club in 1986, returned with two new partners — his son Nevin and Paul Martin, a local business owner. The club, at 265 E. Park Ave., was renovated and reopened during the pandemic.

“I always said if New York Sports Club or Hollywood was available, prior to selling to it, and I was at the right age and it was the right time, it would’ve been a dream of mine to run a gym,” Nevin said. “It just so happens now, almost 20 years later, it basically became a reality.”

The gym’s reopening looks much different than it did 20 years ago. With Covid regulations in place, all patrons must wear masks and have their temperatures checked upon arrival. The owners have also installed plastic barriers between cardio

machines and created six small, personalized Smartfit workout rooms that have the Peleton App. They plan on expanding in the upcoming months but said they have had an “incredible” reception thus far.

“I could not be happier with the reception,” Nevin said. “As far as the look of the place and just the entire feel of having Hollywood back.”

The club has eight certified fitness trainers for personalized sessions and four full-time staff members, along with four part-time staff members, to keep the spaces clean.

The owners have also partnered with Skudin Swim to provide classes in the swimming pool, which they plan to move to the beach in the summer. They will bring aerobic and spin classes.

They will also open the rooftop to provide outdoor classes during the warmer months.

Long Beach welcomes first paid female

firefighter in its histOry

O

n Sept. 11, 2001, Catherine Lewis sat in her fourth-grade class at Our Lady Queen of Peace School on Staten Island, watching TV images of smoke billowing from the World Trade Center.

As a 9-year-old, she had only scant knowledge of what was happening, but she was terrified. “Teachers were running around the hall,” she recalled last week. Soon she was picked up by a relative and taken home.

But the images of the firefighters running toward, not away from, the burning twin towers have stayed with her ever since. So much so, she said, that she decided to become a firefighter.

On March 16, Lewis, 28, was sworn in as the first female paid firefighter in the 111-year history of the Long Beach Fire Department. She was joined by two other recruits, both men, bringing the number of paid firefighters in the 150-member department to 17.

“I grew up in New York City, after 9/11,” Lewis said. “The firefighters and the first responders became the heart and soul of the city. That day has always stuck with me.”

A number of times, Lewis has run in the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation 5K Race/ Walk, held each September, retracing the steps of the New York City firefighter for whom the event is named, from Brooklyn to Lower Manhattan. On Sept. 11, Siller, 34, raced across the BrooklynBattery Tunnel on foot, carrying 65 pounds of firefighting gear, and later died when the towers collapsed.

As a young girl, Lewis mentioned to her parents, Mary and Francis Lewis, that she wanted to be a firefighter. They nodded, thinking she might change her mind. She never did.

She kept in shape, earning a degree in sociology from Colgate University in upstate Madison County, where she played basketball, and earned a master’s in education from Hunter College.

After graduating from Hunter, Lewis taught for a while, still thinking about becoming a firefighter. A friend who was a fire chief with the FDNY told her he had heard about openings in Long Beach.

She scored 100 on the civil-service test, and passed the rigorous physical. She was hired, and is now assigned to an 18-week training program at the Westchester County Fire Training Center in

Valhalla, just north of White Plains. Training consists of class work and physical activities. She commutes from her home in Glendale, Queens, and hopes to move to Long Beach after completing her training.

“Being a firefighter is a very cerebral career,” Lewis said. “You have to love to read and write.” The job requires, among other things, extensive knowledge of the chemicals needed to extinguish a blaze.

Long Beach’s volunteer Fire Department has several women, according to city officials. But Lewis is the first paid female in the department. In 1982, the FDNY swore in its first female firefighters, when 42 women took the oath. A spokesman said the department’s 10,770 members now include 126 women.

Long Beach is the only municipality on Long Island with a paid Fire Department. In 2018, Garden City shut down its paid department, and now relies solely on volunteers.

A decade ago, the Long Beach paid department had 33 members, but the ranks have been thinned by retirements and resignations. Fire officials said they needed to replace some of the positions. The city and the union representing the paid firefighters reached an agreement that allowed for the hiring of Lewis and two others.

But what is widely agreed on is the pride that city and fire officials express about the hiring of a woman.

“This administration places a high priority on diversity and having the city’s workforce reflect Long Beach’s population,” City Manager Donna Gayden said. “From my hire in February 2020 as the first female and first African-American city manager, to promoting the first Latina sergeant in the police department, and now to the hiring of recruit Lewis, we have a lot of work yet to do, but are making meaningful progress and are proud of it.”

Lewis herself is focused on the future. “I’m excited to be the first [paid] female firefighter in Long Beach and to have broken that barrier,” she said. “I want to prove that females can do the job, but most of all, my goal is to be the best firefighter I can be.”

The Pandemic

he Long Beach Fire Department has been protecting the community for more than 100 years and has remained committed to serving the people of Long Beach during these unprecedented times.

Recently, the 63rd chief of Department, Richard DiGiacomo, stepped down, and the department welcomed former First Assistant Chief James Jacobi to the position of chief of department.

Last year, the fire department took new precautions to mitigate the spread of Covid-19, while still offering all of the services it normally did.

The response policy has been changed from a full department response to a partial response.

Instead of all available units responding to automatic fire alarm activation, now only a few units are assigned to each response. If the alarm is for an active fire, or another emergency, then all available units are requested to respond.

This new policy has been successful in pro-

moting social distancing within the department, while ensuring that members are still able to protect the community.

The Emergency Medical Services had to be cautious when dealing with patients who have tested positive for Covid-19. The fire department aims to provide the highest quality of care for anyone in need, while still keeping the safety of its workers in mind. If any patient shows signs of Covid-19 or the flu, the team will put on additional protective equipment such as a full-face shield.

The fire department has resumed in-person meetings and training. Not even a pandemic will waiver its commitment to protect and serve the Long Beach community.

City Welcomes

New Police Commissioner

T

he City of Long Beach welcomed a new police commissioner this year, former Nassau County Police Chief of Support Ronald Walsh.

Walsh, 55, of Freeport, served 28 years on the NCPD. He was raised in the City by the Sea and now has the opportunity to man a squad of more than 60 officers. He was sworn in February, just in time to lend his voice to Long Beach’s new reform plan.

He plans to bring more transparency and bring the department up to date.

Walsh was selected to be Long Beach’s top cop in December 2020, after a narrowing down process that included about a dozen applicants. He had been working as a consultant for Long Beach until his two-year waiver was approved.

“Ron really has an incredibly broad and successful professional profile, which makes him eminently qualified for this job,” said City Council President John Bendo in a prior statement.

Walsh became a special agent for the U.S. Department of Justice working for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, now called or ICE. He served two years there and three years as a

New York City police officer, in Far Rockaway, before joining the Nassau department in 1992.

In Nassau, Walsh served as a police officer, sergeant, lieutenant, detective lieutenant, captain, deputy inspector, inspector, deputy chief, assistant chief and chief of support Walsh also worked years ago as a “summer special” in Long Beach, helping to police the boardwalk. He said he is planning to buy a home in Freeport.

Walsh graduated from the Senior Management Institute for Police and the FBI National Academy, and is “an accomplished lecturer, trainer and educator.”

Walsh said he had fallen in love with being a police officer.

“I can’t think of any bad day” since he started working, Walsh said. “There isn’t a bad day when you love what you are doing.”

The Long Beach LiBrary

ince its establishment in 1928, the Long Beach Public Library has provided a wide range of programs and services to the community with the purpose of bringing people together to learn, to grow and to be inspired.

With a main building, a Point Lookout branch and a West End branch, the library serves the Long Beach School District, which includes the City of Long Beach, Lido Beach, East Atlantic Beach and Point Lookout.

A five-person Board of Trustees governs the library and usually meets every third Monday of the month. Trustees are elected at large and serve five-year terms. Board agendas, minutes and directors’ reports are posted online at www. longbeachlibrary.org.

The main building is a Wi-Fi hotspot and has a technology center, quiet study, tutoring room, art gallery, program room and a 175-seat multipurpose auditorium. The library has an up-to-date collection of fiction and non-fiction books, graphic novels, a growing collection of language books, audiobooks, electronic databases, compact discs, films and magazines for all ages. The Long Beach Library is also a co-sponsor of the Long Beach Holocaust Library, the first of its kind on Long Island.

During the pandemic, the library staff shifted and started up new virtual programs and also changed the layout of their website. To view new

he popular Michelle O’ Neill Volleyball Tournament, which attracts thousands to Long Beach, has a tentative date of Sept. 11, 2021. Officials, however, said they are waiting for further guidance the city and state. The event would mark their 25th year celebration.

The Michelle O'Neill Foundation Inc. is a not-for-profit organization that benefits children with cancer and special needs by making distributions directly to their families to help ease the financial burdens of caring for a child with a catastrophic disease and to let them know that people care, as well as supporting organizations that serve them.

The foundation has raised hundreds of thousands for organizations such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Ronald McDonald House, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and many others.

Holiday Care at West End Community Center The West End Community Center is at 79 Maryland Ave., on the southern side of West School. When schools are closed for holidays or vacation periods, YFS offers full-day Holiday Care programs to youngsters from 5 to 12 years old (4-year-olds can be accommodated at the Magnolia pre-K center if registered and space allows). Activities include trips, arts and crafts, snacks, sports, games and all-around good fun!

Sandbox Pre-K The YFS Sandbox Pre-K has provided youngsters living in the Long Beach community with quality education, socialization and cultural arts programs for more than 35 years.

Operating out of the West End Community Center, Sandbox offers certified teaching staff, small classes and a caring environment to preK youngsters ages 3 and 4. Parents of 3-year-

olds can choose to enroll their children in a two, three, or five day a week program that meets from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The 4-year-old program runs five days a week from 8:30-11 a.m., at which time children are picked up and bused to the Lido Pre-K Center. Full-day summer camp YFS offers full-day state-licensed Summer Camp programs at Lido Middle School for youngsters from 5 to 12 years old. Bus pickups and drop-offs are available at the MLK Center and the West End Community Center.

The children are scheduled to go on trips every week and enjoy swimming and activities at North Woodmere and Wantagh Park and Pool.

The children are divided into three age groups according to the grade they will enter in the fall: kindergarten to second grade; third to fifth grade; and sixth to eighth grade. Your child will enjoy swimming, sports, arts & crafts, team building and game activities.

Campers will enjoy trips to places such as Luna Park, Adventure Land, Medieval Times, Bronx Zoo, Splish Splash, Aquarium, L.I. Ducks Game, Country Fair, Sky Zone, N.Y. Hall of Science, Museum of Natural History and Governors Comedy Club. All trips are age appropriate and well supervised by a knowledgeable and experienced adult staff certified in CPR and first-aid.

Camp ANCHOR, the Town of Hempstead's sixweek day camp program, will serve 720 children and adults with special needs throughout the summer. Camp participants enjoy an array of athletic, aquatic and cultural programs, as well as field trips and special events. This comprehensive recreational day camp will be available to eligible participants who are 5 years of age and older. Transportation is provided. Registration fee required.

he Long Beach City Council approved a resolution in February to designate Juneteenth — a celebration of Black freedom — as an official city holiday, following a number of Long Island municipalities in recognizing the day that slaves in Texas finally learned they were free after the Civil War — June 19, 1865.

The council also unanimously authorized City Manager Donna Gayden to enter into an agreement with the city's Civil Service Employees Association and the Commanding Officers Association to add Juneteenth to the list of paid holidays, at no additional cost to Long Beach.

City Council President John Bendo said that city employees now have paid holidays on Lincoln's and Washington's birthdays. Beginning next year, Bendo said, they would give up Lincoln's Birthday and have a paid holiday on Juneteenth instead.

Council Vice President Karen McInnis said she was proud of the city for taking the step.

L.B. BIKE AUCTION attracts more than 100 people

acob Otto raised his hand and bid $15 for a 1989 Euro Cruiser as Long Beach’s annual bike auction opened at 8 a.m. sharp on a Saturday at Kennedy Plaza outside City Hall.

“We got $15,” called out auctioneer John Bendo, who is also the president of the Long Beach City Council. “$15 going once, going twice, going three times. Okay, $15 is the winner.”

A triumphant Otto wheeled off his bike. “This bike is going to be worth $200 when I fix it up,” he said. His first task, he said, will be to get the rust off the bike.

About 125 people turned out on that balmy Saturday morning for the bike auction, which Bendo said usually attracts 30 to 50 people. The auction was not held last year because of the coronavirus pandemic. But this year, bikes were lined up outside City Hall, maybe not shiny, but seemingly eager for new riders.

“We didn’t expect so many people here,” said Long Beach’s new police commissioner, Ron Walsh.

The Police Department organizes the auction, after collecting the bikes, which police officers find discarded on the streets.

There were about 119 bikes to be auctioned off.

Money collected from the auction goes in the city’s general fund, said John McNally, executive assistant to the Long Beach City manager.

The event attracted young and old, who exam-

ined the bikes carefully, squeezed the tires, tested the seats and the chains.

Bernard Langlieb, of North Woodmere, a retired English teacher at a school in the South Bronx, described himself as someone who ”hustles bikes,” by which he meant he buys at auctions or yard sales, fixes them, up and sells them, all for the fun of it.

After examining the bikes, Langlieb said he was “not optimistic” about striking a good deal. Too many, he said, were rusty, and he expected bidding on them to be “too high.”

That’s because, he said, people have been indoors closeted for too long, and are eager to get on a bike and get out, at any price.

Crystal Brenke, of Lido, brought her 10-yearold daughter, Hudson, to buy the girl a new bike.

Hudson said her current bike was “beat up,” and she needed something new. She said he would be riding her new bike “every day in the park.”

Many were like Jennifer Caggiano, of Island Park, who was looking forward to a more Covidfree summer, one that would include plenty of biking.

“I need the exercise,” Caggiano said. “I’d like to take the bike on the boardwalk.”

Long Beach marked the grand opening of its new skate park in 2015 with its first Bowl-a-Rama Skate Jam Contest, presented by Skudin Surf.

The skate park was designed by California-based firm Spohn Ranch, which used input gathered form Long Beach residents and skaters at two public engagement meetings to construct a park tailored to the wishes of local skaters. The structure was designed to accommodate skaters of all ages and skill levels.

The new park is on National Boulevard, on the bay side, closer to the Recreation Center than the previous one on Magnolia Boulevard. It is open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Visit longbeachny.gov for updates.

The old park was significantly damaged by Hurricane Sandy. The new park has switched from modular ramps to concrete ones that require less maintenance, among other improvements.

The park includes an amoeba bowl, a combination horseshoe bowl and mini-ramp, a speed hump and numerous handrails and stairs. Its 15,000-squarefoot L-shape more than doubled the size of the old park, officials said.

Magnolia Center

he Magnolia Senior & Child Day Care Center in Long Beach has remained closed to the public since last March.

The center is “a modern and cheerful setting. Participants can select from approximately 50 stimulating wellness, cultural and recreational programs." It also provides after-school programming for young children and daycare for infants. It has been closed to its typical recreational programming, such as yoga or intramural sports teams.

According Monique Powell, director of community development for the city, there are no activities planned until at least the fall. City officials plan to meet over the summer to discuss activities upcoming at the Magnolia Center.

Last year, the coronavirus closures jumpstarted an already ongoing effort within the city to decrease its capacities and discontinue its infant daycare program.

No other program currently provides this service in Long Beach. The city is not yet sure of the private sector provider that will take on the role, or how this might alter the accessibility or pricing of such programs.

Meanwhile, the senior center — which occupies the same facility as the after-school program — hosts a population that is extremely vulnerable to the coronavirus. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that older adults, the immunocompromised and those with pre-existing respiratory illnesses are among the most likely to contract or die from the illness.

MLK COMMUNITY CENTER

he Long Beach Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center has been providing the city with programs on anything from entrepreneurial development to youth education and adult literacy since it started in 1967. Despite the pandemic, the community center continues to provide Long Beach residents with necessary services. As a non-profit charitable organization, the Community Center aims to do as much as it can to help Long Beach get through the Covid-19 pandemic.

Traditionally, the center has provided programs in youth and family recreation, youth leadership development, career development, financial literacy, family and community violence prevention, family strengthening, health and wellness promotion, and cultural awareness. As a result of Covid-19, these services are limited and others are virtual.

In keeping with the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center's commitment to teaching Long Beach residents useful skills, the center has been offering workshops via Zoom. Various do-it-yourself face mask tutorials have taken place. These sessions are available in both English and Spanish — for those who cannot comfortably interact with others in English. The center hopes to hold more virtual programs in the future. Announcements for these workshops are listed on the community center's Facebook page.

Since many find themselves unable to feed their families as a result of the current conditions, the MLK Community Center has also made it a priority to initiate the Grab and Go Food Program.

Rain or shine, the staff provides meals to those in need in the parking lot of the community center. The program runs Monday through Friday from noon to 2 p.m. Social distancing guidelines are followed, and each staff member is required to wear a face covering. The center also accepts donations to this program through their Cashapp $LBMLK and their PayPal @ Lbmlk.org. The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center strongly advises people to follow appropriate guidelines when picking up their meals.

The center also welcomed a new executive director, Mack Graham. The Staten Island native has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stony Brook University and earned a master's degree in nonprofit leadership from Fordham University in 2017. At Stony Brook, he had an internship at Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group.

While interning in the music industry, Graham worked with the New York Urban League. He also was a grassroots fundraiser.

a city in 1922, but it is also part of Nassau County, and certain county services and facilities are available to Long Beach residents.

In fact, barrier island residents who live outside the city limits — in East Atlantic Beach to the west and Lido Beach and Point Lookout to the east — depend on them.

Nassau is governed by an elected Legislature that was formed in January 1996. The Legislature’s 19 districts enable constituents to have greater access to their elected representatives. It includes an independent budget director who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters.

The Legislature also enables residents to submit petitions for proposed new laws that legislators are obligated to consider.

The legislators serve two-year terms. The 4th District includes the City of Long Beach, Atlantic Beach, East Atlantic Beach, Lido Beach and Point Lookout.

stead, which encompasses Point Lookout, Lido Beach and East Atlantic Beach, but not the City of Long Beach, is the largest township in the United States, with 142 square miles, a population of roughly 725,000, 34 unincorporated areas, 22 incorporated villages, over 65 parks and marinas.

In 1643, two Englishmen, John Carman and the Rev. Robert Fordham, traveled from Connecticut across the Long Island Sound to Long Island.

They represented a group of settlers who wished to purchase from the Indians (the Reuckowacky, the Merockes, the Matinecock, and the Massapequas), the current towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead. In 1644, the Town of Hempstead was founded when a patent was obtained from William Kieft, the Dutch governor of New Amsterdam. The name Hempstead seems to derive from Hemel-Hempstead in Great Britain, which means town spot.

Hempstead grew steadily in the 1800s, and by 1855 it was the most populous town in Queens County, with just under 10,500 people. The town, along with the rest of Long Island, supplied the greater metropolitan area with a multitude of farm products and provided abundant recreational opportunities, including seashore resorts, fox hunting, polo and horse racing. The population peaked at just over 800,000 in 1970.

Today, on the Long Beach barrier island, the Town of Hempstead encompasses Point Lookout and Lido Beach to the east and East Atlantic Beach and Atlantic Beach to the west. The town maintains two marinas in Point Lookout as well as several beach parks.

Hempstead Town has seven elected board members. The supervisor, Donald Clavin, serves a twoyear term. The six council members serve four years each. Visit hempsteadny.gov for more information.
