The coronavirus crisis that erupted in March and carries on to this day in New York shook all of us to our core. Glen Cove, however, remains strong. It is a community full of fighters. Superstorm Sandy and Tropical Storm Isaias, which ravaged the area, proved that. The storms pummeled our shores, but they never defeated our indomitable spirit to survive and thrive. Just as we saw in Sandy's wake, neighbors have helped neighbors through the Covid-19 Stuart crisis and Isaias, delivering food and medical Richner supplies to vulnerable residents, providing meals for the jobless and just checking in on one another. Thankfully, as of this writing in mid-September, the coronavirus infection rate had dropped to about 1 percent in New York. Let us hope and pray it remains at or falls below that level so people stay safe, and we can continue Glen Cove's successful reopening of the economy and our schools. That will depend on all of us doing our parts — wearing our facial covers, maintaining social distance — not only today and tomorrow, but also likely for months to come. Throughout the crisis, the Glen Cove Herald Gazette continued to provide invaluable news to the community, incuding information on institution closings, new safety protocols and, unfortunately, remembrances of lives lost. I want to thank our journalists for their commitment to the Glen Cove community. Our staff, categorized as essential workers by Governor Cuomo, were out in the field regularly, even during the height of the pandemic, to ensure people who work and live in Glen Cove had access to the best and most up-to-date information. Additionally, Richner Communications, the parent company of the Glen Cove Herald Gazette, was proud to provide $500,000 in small business marketing grants to entrepreneurs across the South Shore, including many in the area. We know small businesses are the lifeblood of any community — especially in Glen Cove — so we are hopeful these funds will help your favorite stores and restaurants get back on their feet. In this edition of our annual community guide, we look at all that is wonderful about Glen Cove, at the same time that we examine what has changed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Living In Glen Cove is a special publication of the Glen Cove Herald Gazette, the community's hometown newspaper. Living In is published in cooperation with the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce, and we are honored to mark another year as its official publication. We hope you find this issue of Living In Glen Copve useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the Glen Cove Herald Gazette 52 weeks a year.

How Glen Cove became a city
G
len Cove, founded in 1668, was tied to the Town of Oyster Bay for the first 250 years of its existence. Four of the five original plantation proprietors of Mosquito Cove, which Glen Cove was known as in the 17th century, lived in Oyster Bay, which had been settled 15 years before. A rural hamlet, Mosquito Cove was under the oversight of these five proprietors. When the original settlers died, the local government fell under the jurisdiction of the town. One hundred and fifty years passed before the federal government recognized the hamlet in 1818. With the establishment of its own post office, the official name of the community became Musketa Cove. In order to dispel the notion that the community was a haven for mosquitoes, an alternative name — Glen Cove — was chosen in 1834. The community grew dramatically during the latter half of the 19th century, but it never incorporated. By the early 20th century Glen Cove’s population was approaching 10,000, making it the largest community in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Although it was a thriving community, Glen Cove was still administered by the town, while the neighboring Village of Sea Cliff had incorporated in 1883. Many residents felt that Glen Cove was not receiving the services commensurate with the tax dollars sent to the town. Some in the community thought that Glen Cove should become an incorporated village and form its own government, while others favored incorporating as a city. By 1915, the editor of the “Glen Cove Echo,” John Davis, had become a voice for the pro-city faction, printing editorials advancing this position. This prompted the Village Improvement
Association to meet on April 21, 1916. The “Committee of Seven,” comprised of respected members of the community was selected. They were tasked with studying the question of incorporating Glen Cove as a city. But World War I was then raging in Europe, and the debate as to whether America should enter the war overshadowed the issue of Glen Cove’s future form of government. The issue was reintroduced in January 1917, when the Village Improvement Association met again. They favored a city form of government. A new committee of 25 members, including all of the “Committee of Seven” members, was chosen to draft a charter. When word got out that Glen Cove was pursuing “citification,” a request was made by some Sea Cliff residents that its village be included in the future City of Glen Cove, but this request was rejected. It was decided that the boundaries should coincide with those of School District No. 5 of the Town of Oyster Bay. Today, the city and the school district are unified within these boundaries Voters overwhelmingly supported creating a city on March 2, 1917. Then New York Gov. Charles S. Whitman signed a bill ensuring that Glen Cove become a city on June 8. In celebration, a cannon was fired at 30-second intervals that evening. Then a larger, formal celebration was held on June 13, 1917, with music, parades and fireworks. ~ Courtesy GC350 History Committee Tammy Lanham/Herald Gazette

e With over 350 years of history under its belt, Glen Cove has established itself as a central part of the Gold Coast’s culture. The city encompasses 6.6 square miles of land on the North Shore and roughly 12.6 square miles of water. And as of 2017, approximately 27,400 people call Glen Cove home, where they benefit from a city that has become a hub of entertainment, food, nature and recreation. While every facet of Glen Cove’s culture makes it one of Long Island’s most noteworthy destinations, it is perhaps best known for its mansions, some of which date back over a century. Glen Cove Mansion Built in Dosoris Park by John Teele Pratt, Sr. between 1909 and 1915, this sprawling eponymous property hosts dozens upon dozens of events throughout the year. From festivals to fundraisers to private parties, the Glen Cove Mansion, once called the Manor House, has become one of the city’s most popular destinations. Webb Institute Just past the Welwyn Preserve sits the Webb Institute, or as it was called upon its creation in 1912, the Braes Mansion. Built by Herbert L. Pratt, the mansion has housed the Webb Institute’s private undergraduate engineering college program since 1947. Killenworth The history of the Killenworth mansion starts much like the rest of Glen Cove’s mansions, as it was built in 1913 by George DuPont Pratt. However, it separated itself from the pack in 1951 when it was purchased by the Soviet Union to serve as the country’s retreat to the United Nations. Since then, there has been no shortage of controversy surrounding the massive estate.

Glengariff Built by Frederic B. Pratt between 1917 and 1924 as the Poplar Hill mansion, this estate on Dosoris Lane now houses the Glengariff Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. The magnificent early-20th century architecture makes for a more personal, homey healthcare atmosphere. While each of these mansions and others around the city serve different purposes, they all help to shed light on the lush past of Glen Cove and what makes it one of the most historically and culturally significant places on Long Island. Visitors of all ages and backgrounds are sure to be in for a treat when they view these incredible estates.

Socially distant celebrations from the roadway By Jennifer Corr
T
he pandemic may have made parades like the Glen Cove Saint Patrick’s Day Parade and the Glen Cove Memorial Day Parade impossible for the year 2020, but Glen Cove residents did not let the Covid-19 rain on their parade. Glen Cove resident Roni Jenkins founded the Facebook group, “Car parade birthday and celebrations drive-bys - Long Island North Shore,” in late April after a conversation with her friend, Lynda Hickey. They both realized that there weren't many car parades on North Shore streets like in other communities in Long Island. They wanted that to change. The Facebook group brought many residents together to celebrate birthdays, graduations, retirements and other significant life events. And the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services and the Police Department even
joined in with their loud and bright sirens to bring smiles to faces during the difficult time. On Memorial Day, the group held multiple car parades to honor veterans, including 96-year-old Bob O’Neill, a World War II veteran who stormed the beaches of Normandy, who would have normally attended a picnic at the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Glen Cove that day. “The way that New Yorkers are, we come together and through it and we make each other stronger,” Jenkins said. n an effort to stop the spread of Covid-19, many policies were introduced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo that changed the way New Yorkers live their daily lives, such as having children learn from home instead of in a classroom. The lessons were held over video conference platforms such as Zoom. Although students’ needs are being met in the Glen Cove City School District during the coronavirus pandemic — learning materials, internet access and even breakfast and lunch — one thing is missing — time with friends. In an effort to connect, students and teachers have been saying “hello” through health-conscious methods like video montages and car parades. In fact, to honor the Glen Cove High School Class of 2020, two car parades were held in their honor, one by community members and the other by the Glen Cove City School District, which Glen Cove city officials visited as well. “I’ve seen them have to adjust to a very different world in a very short period of time, and I’m so proud of how they’ve made that adjustment and so many of them have really given time to the community to support younger children or the Glen Cove High School Pantry or just putting efforts into the community making masks,” Glen Cove City School District Superintendent Maria Rianna said. “If the future is in their hands, I’m looking forward to it.” And to prevent students and their family from going hungry, school faculty, students and local community members worked through the pandemic to keep the Glen Cove High School Food Pantry full, by keeping it open for pickup on select days and even making deliveries for families who did not have transportation. “I’m truly in awe of the people who have really donated and I’m honored to be a part of this district,” Rianna said. It’s incredible.”

he Glen Cove Police Department works to limit exposure during coronavirus pandemic Limiting interactions with the community is not included in a police officer’s job description because most of their work involves being of service to the community in person. Police have never had to be six feet away when interacting with the public, as required during the pandemic. Even so, upholding social-distancing protocols is necessary to keep the public safe. To do this, GCPD has found other alternatives in interacting with the community. When civilians come to headquarters to file reports, Lt. Detective John Nagle said the time spent in headquarters is limited. “Many times, the officer might meet the person in the back of headquarters with a mask on,” he said. And civilians will most likely wear masks as well when completing the report. One other way to further limit so-
cial interaction is by handling reports by phone instead of directly in the office. “Overall, we try to limit the faceto-face exposure between the officer and the public,” Nagle said. As long as the coronavirus is present, these new protocols will continue to be practiced at the GCPD. The officers have learned how to be creative in serving their community. Wearing complete personal protective equipment, including masks and gloves, is essential to keeping not only the officer safe, but the public as well. “One of the most effective tools that we are employing are the masks,” Nagle said. Use of the mask, he said, is the reason why the department has had relatively few coronavirus cases throughout this pandemic.

he Glen Cove Fire Department has recently been connecting with the community by way of drive-bys. Interactions for the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department have been limited because of the coronavirus pandemic. Having to keep six feet away and wearing protective gear has created a barrier to normal communication between firefighters and community members. However, the department has found creative ways to keep connected to the community, while also ensuring everyone’s safety. “Unfortunately, with the pandemic and the state essentially putting us on a lockdown, we tried to make the best of a very bad situation,” Chief Marvin Tate said. “So, what we did along with the help of the Glen Cove Police Department and Glen Cove Emergency Medical Services is we came up with a criterion for helping the community during these extraordinary times by doing drive-bys.” “We used the fire trucks, Glen Cove Police Department cars, and Glen Cove Emergency Medical Services vehicles to help the community with celebrations for city residents’ birthdays, graduations and special requests,” Tate said. “It was a small gesture that we could extend to the community while still answering emergency calls.” Keeping a close eye on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and statewide regulations is the safest way to ensure that the department’s volunteers and the community are safe. It is the only way for them to serve and protect their community without fear and uncertainty. “This is an experience that is new for all of us. What we have to do is make sure our members have the confidence in us by making sure they have what is needed to keep them safe during this pandemic while out on alarms,” Tate said. GCFD leaders said they are willing to do everything they can to handle the pandemic and show their community that they are with them through this struggle.

Holocaust Museum and Tolerance Center
F
ounded in 1992 by Holocaust survivor Boris Chartan, the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County is a resource in the community for education on the Holocaust and all forms of intolerance, presenting lessons from the past to fight anti-Semitism and other manifestations of bigotry in the present. Although HMTC’s building temporarily closed in March as a result of the pandemic, the organization’s work in education and community outreach has evolved rather than pausing. The tours and workshops that the center typically offers are no longer available in person, but school and public community programs have been adapted to a virtual format. Virtual museum tours have been available through Zoom, along with lectures on subjects such as women’s suffrage. Film screenings have also continued in a new way. With virtual post-screening discussions, the center pro-
vides both a link to purchase or stream a selected film and a link to a discussion of the film to watch afterward. Another popular program is “Curator’s Corner.” Each week, Thorin Tritter, HMTC’s museum and programming director, discusses a different piece from the museum over Zoom. The discussions are posted on YouTube for anyone to watch as well. The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center’s director of development, Deborah Lom, said that she hopes the center will be able to reopen after Labor Day and return to in-person programming while continuing the recent virtual programs. Lom added, however, that the center is prepared to continue its mission, whether physically open or not. Courtesy HMTC

Did you know?
L
ong-time residents know many of the stories and myths of prominent people who lived in or visited Glen Cove, including: • The story of Capt. William Kidd, who may have buried (and then retrieved) some of his ill-gotten treasure from a spot at Sheep-Pen Point (Garvies Point). • Frank Winfield Woolworth, the Five and Dime King, and how his empire of F.W. Woolworth stores funded his marble-façade mansion in Glen Cove, and also the Woolworth Building in New York City, which was the world’s tallest skyscraper when it was dedicated. • The financier J.P. Morgan Jr. owned an entire island in Glen Cove – East Island – that comprised his vast estate “Matinecock Point,” and which is more often called Morgan Island. • The Brooklyn Dodgers’ Roy Campanella and the New York Yankees’ Whitey Ford both made their homes in Glen Cove. That’s a lot of cornstarch!
T
he largest cornstarch manufacturing company in the world was located in Glen Cove. The Duryea family established the Glen Cove Starch Manufacturing Company at the head of the Glen Cove Creek in 1855. It quickly grew to become Glen Cove’s largest employer, and eventually, under the name National Starch Manufacturing Company, became the world’s largest. The starch works was completely destroyed by fire in 1906 and never rebuilt. The “Father of the American Roller Coaster"
L
a Marcus A. Thompson, who developed the first planned community in Glen Cove, and resided there — Thompson Park — was better known for his development of the roller coaster. His “Gravity Pleasure Switchback Railway,” for which he obtained a patent, opened at Brooklyn’s Coney Island in 1884, and riders were
charged a nickel to ride it at the breathtaking speed of up to 10 mph. Although competitors capitalized on his design, Thompson continued to improve his design by adding tunnels, lights, and scenery to what he later called the “L.A. Thompson Scenic Railway,” and which eventually came to be known as the “roller coaster.” Obtaining 30 patents along the way, he constructed 50 of these early roller coasters across the country in four years, and in 1888 began building his more advanced “scenic railways” around the world. His most notable scenic railway opened in Venice, Calif., in 1910. While Thompson is not credited with the invention of the roller coaster, he has been deemed the “Father of the American Roller Coaster” and the “Father of the Gravity Ride” by many, particularly because his innovations introduced the roller coaster to the masses. S
ergeant-Major Daniel Joseph Daly, USMC (1873-1937), was born in Glen Cove and served as a U.S. Marine during the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900, for which service he received the first Medal of Honor decoration. His second award of the Medal of Honor was for actions in Haiti in 1915, where U.S. Forces were deployed to put down a rebellion, making him one of only 19 servicemen to earn the medal twice. Daly also received the Navy Cross for conspicuous action in the Battle of Belleau Wood in France during World War I. A Fletcher-class destroyer commissioned during World War II was named for SGT-MAJ Dan Daly and the Arterial Highway (Route 107) entering Glen Cove is also named for this heroic son of our city.

about the City of Glen Cove Gold Coast’s first golf course
I
n the 1890s, Arthur Sleigh of Glen Cove was on a business trip to London for the Duryea Starch Works. He met a Scot who invited him to Scotland and demonstrated the game of golf. On his return to the states, Sleigh introduced his friend Billy Hicks to the game and the two of them practiced the sport on empty lots around The Place. A third friend was introduced to the mysteries of golf, John Coles Tappan, and the three men soon created a 6-hole golf course in the Red Spring Area of Glen Cove, between Crescent Beach Road and Red Spring Lane. Their Queens County Golf Club opened in October 1895, and soon gained many members from the Red Spring and North Country Colonies. An additional three holes were soon added on the east side of Crescent Beach Road and the membership grew with the addition of other prominent Glen Cove residents. When 107 acres became available near Duck Pond Road, the club purchased them and created an 18-hole course and incorporated it as the Nassau Country Club in 1898. The name change was due to Nassau County being created out of Queens County on Jan. 1, 1899. Appleby’s Grove Scout Camp
W
ithin one year after the Boy Scouts of America were formed in 1910, the area behind the bluffs where the Garvies Point Museum is currently located, and was known as “Appleby’s Grove,” was used as a campground by the Boy Scouts. In 1915, through the generosity of the property owner, Charles Appleby, “Camp Coogan” was officially established as a Scout Camp for Boy Scouts from New York City's poor neighborhoods and was named for
the scoutmaster of the troop that established the camp, the Rev. John J. Coogan. According to The New York Times, Coogan was the first Catholic priest in the United States to be commissioned as a scoutmaster in the BSA. Following World War I, a second Boy Scout camp, constructed by and for Glen Cove scouts was also located in “Appleby’s Grove.” In addition to tent sites, “Camp Gra-Mor,” as it was called, had buildings for a dining hall, kitchen and store room. Although the scout camps were long gone by the early 1960s, local Boy Scout troops still camped occasionally in “Appleby’s Grove,” until the property was sold to Nassau County as a preserve and museum.

T
he modern homemaker’s essential product, Reynolds Wrap, may have had its roots in Glen Cove. F.W. Woolworth’s palatial estate, “Winfield Hall” on Crescent Beach Road, was sold by his heirs in 1929 to Richard S. Reynolds, the head of Reynolds Aluminum (technically, Reynolds Metals Company). Reynolds Aluminum began as the U.S. Foil Company in 1919 and supplied aluminum foil wrappers for cigarettes, Lifesavers candies and Eskimo Pies through the 1920s. When Reynolds purchased “Winfield Hall” in Glen Cove, he converted the estate garages to a research laboratory, where it is reported that the process for producing the company’s best-known aluminum foil product, Reynolds Wrap (which debuted in 1947), was first developed. Reynolds Metals was the second largest American aluminum company and the third largest in the world before it merged with ALCOA in 2000. “Winfield Hall” was sold by Reynolds Metals in 1969. ~GC350 History Committee

Greetings from the
Glen Cove Chamber of CommerCe
T
his year marks the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce’s 100th year. It has been my honor to serve as president for more than two years now. I have to say that this year has been the most challenging. When our business community suffers because of the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus, the chamber sufLisa Cohn fers as well. However, we have endeavored to provide whatever support we can to all our members whenever possible. With so many challenges, it’s amazing that our membership has grown, and we are still holding board meetings as well as general membership Zoom meetings. Everyone is hurting, and so it is even more important for us to support one another in any way that we can. We had a virtual 5K run, and we then gave $250 to the North Shore Sheltering Program. Even though they are currently without a location for next winter, they are making every effort to find a place because the need will probably be even greater this coming winter to house the homeless. We also recently awarded scholarships to two deserving students
from the proceeds of last year’s Gala fundraiser. We currently are involved in a weekly Zoom meeting with the other local business organizations — the BID, the Gold Coast Business Association and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Together, we have worked to aid the business community. We are now spearheading a Wear a Mask campaign with the help of RXR. We all believe masks are an important part of abating this the coronavrius. We are still hopeful that we can hold our annual Culinary Delights event if Covid-19 relents. However, it appears that we may have our 100year Gala celebration in conjunction with it. When it becomes safe to gather again, we will let the community know, and together we will have a great celebration!
Sincerely,
Lisa Cohn
