publisher No one saw the coronavirus pandemic coming.

No one expected it to last more than a handful of weeks. No one could have imagined the terrible death toll it would exact.

The past 15 months tested all of us beyond our limits. Freeport, however, remains strong. It is a community full of fighters. Now we understand just how resilient we, as a community, are.

Just as we saw in Superstorm Sandy's wake in 2012, neighbors have been helping neighbors Stuart throughout the Covid-19 crisis, delivering food Richner and medical supplies to vulnerable residents, providing meals for the jobless and just checking in on one another.

Thankfully, as of this writing in late May, some 70 percent of Nassau County residents had received at least their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccines, and the infection rate had dropped locally to about 1 percent. Let us hope and pray it remains at or falls below that level so people remain safe, and we can continue Freeport’s successful reopening of the economy. That will depend on all of us doing our parts — most importantly, scheduling a vaccination appointment if you have not already made one.

Throughout the crisis, the Freeport Herald has provided invaluable news to the community, including information on institution closings, new safety protocols and, unfortunately, remembrances of lives lost.

I want to thank our journalists for their commitment to the Freeport community. Our staff, categorized as essential workers by Governor Cuomo, have been out in the field regularly, even during the height of the pandemic, to ensure people who work and live in Freeport had access to the best and most up-to-date information.

Additionally, Richner Communications, the parent company of the Freeport Herald, was proud to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in small business marketing grants to entrepreneurs across the South Shore, including many in the village. Freeport is not only the second largest village in the state but also one of the most ethnically and racially diverse waterfront communities on the South Shore. With a population of 43,128, Freeport is home to some of Long Island’s top-notch restaurants and charter boats leaving regularly on fishing trips from the Nautical Mile — making it one of the coolest destinations for food and summer fun.

While the summer season officially kicks off Memorial Day weekend and is traditionally celebrated with the annual Nautical Mile and Blues Festival on the first weekend of June — as of the time of creating this guide, it is still unknown whether or not the festival will happen this year. The Nautical Mile is located on Woodcleft Avenue, which runs along the west side of Woodcleft Canal, the waterfront strip that has been ranked number seven on the list of 20 coolest towns in the U.S. by the travel website, Matador Network.

Freeport has made a tremendous comeback since Hurricane Sandy in 2012 with the entire Nautical Mile revitalized and a number of homes elevated. Village residents continue to give back to their hometown, whether through canal cleanups, rebuilding efforts or community service through the nonprofit group, the Friends of Freeport, which has supported displaced storm victims since 2012.

And though the Mile is one of Freeport’s claims to fame, the south part of the village has several canals that allow access to the Atlantic Ocean through salt marshes. Freeport also has extensive small-boat facilities and a resident fishing fleet, as well as charter and open water fishing boats, allowing the avid boating community to spend leisure time on the water.

The village is 28 minutes from John F. Kennedy International airport and has accessible public transportation through the Long Island Rail Road and the NICE bus service.

During summer, Freeport is the gateway to Jones Beach, one of the largest state beaches in New York.

Freeport is a close-knit community and a magical place with a little something for everyone.

• Houses of worship — Freeport is home to nearly two dozen churches and one synagogue, representing a

dozen different faiths.

• Climate — In the summer, the island is consistently 12 to 13 degrees cooler than Manhattan, and in the winter, it is usually about 10 degrees warmer than the Big Apple.

• Elevation — 20 feet, or a little more than six meters, above sea level.

• Police/fire —The city is protected by its own police force, assisted at times by the Nassau County Police Department.

• Utilities — The village is served by National Grid,

espite the challenges brought by the pandemic, the Freeport Public School District was able to reopen its buildings for the 2020-21 school year on Sept. 8 and 9.

“After many months of working collaboratively with administrators, teachers and parents on developing an approved reopening plan that meets the health, safety and wellness needs of our students in these challenging times, it was rewarding and inspiring to see our goals become a reality,” said Dr. Kishore Kunhcam, superintendent of schools. “It was wonderful to see our schools come to life, and to see the enthusiasm of our staff and students. Thanks to our students, staff and parents for making the first day of school a success and to our Board of Education for their ongoing support. ” Making a switch to the hybrid-learning model, all six schools in the district allowed students to either learn from home full-time or come to school every other day for in-person learning.

During the pandemic, the district had given out Chromebooks to students in all grades, as well as provided Internet access to those who lacked it, to make sure that all students were able to take part in distance learning.

Before returning to school, students and parents were encouraged to follow a self-health check guideline to avoid coming into the buildings with Covid-19 symptoms.

Students had to wear a face mask throughout the school day, with allotted breaks between the day.

Once students got to school, they would ap-

proach one of several entry points, where their temperatures would be checked.

The students then went on to their classrooms, which only fit around 15 students. The pre-K classrooms had at most nine students in each class ,with two teachers.

District officials said that all ventilation systems are routinely cleaned, and teachers are allowed to open windows and classroom doors to help with air circulation. Classrooms, hallways and buses are also cleaned regularly.

Whenever someone tested positive for Covid-19, district officials notified the Nassau County Department of Health, and both worked on the conditions and scope of any necessary closures. Contaminated areas were closed for 24 hours before being cleaned and disinfected. The person who tested positive for Covid-19 then waited for a negative test result to come in before they were allowed to return to school.

As of April, the district had more than 300 positive cases.

Despite all the changes, students continued to thrive in the district and were able to take part in special virtual events, performances and celebrations throughout the school year.

While the schools initially operated on a fourday weekday, with Friday’s set aside for additional remote-learning lessons, some of the schools have now gone back to a full, five-day schedule.

L

ocated at 130 E. Merrick Road, the Freeport Recreation Center serves as a beacon of the community.

Although it had been closed due to the pandemic in the spring and summer of 2020, the center was able to reopen in September while continuing to adhere to state regulations regarding the use of masks and social distancing.

The center houses the village’s ice rink, swimming pools and fitness center for members to use.

The fitness center is equipped with cardio machines, free weights and benches.

The center will be holding various 10-class swimming courses at the center this summer for children of all ages. Private swim lessons can also be scheduled with certified instructors.

Unlike last year, the center will be hosting a summer camp on a first-come, first-served basis.

The center runs half-day and full-day programs that include swimming, sports, arts & crafts, playground time, ice skating and other events. The half-day programs runs from 9 a.m. to noon, and the full-day program from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Kiddie Club preschool program will also return to the center in September for children ages three to four. The club will provide fun activities for the kids at the center.

Though the Recreation Center welcomes everyone, registration and membership are required to take full advantage of most of the programs and

amenities at the center. Memberships are available in summer, half-year and annual increments.

Freeport Memorial Library

T

he Freeport Memorial Library became one of the first libraries to fully reopen on June 15.

Throughout the height of the pandemic, the library allowed accommodations for curbside pickup for books and library materials, expanded access to virtual book and movie collections, online programming for activities like Zumba, meditation and family genealogy and a temporary moratorium on late fees for library patrons.

The library also acquired Wi-Fi hotspots to lend to patrons. Library officials explained that with more and more people working and studying from home, the need for the library’s Wi-Fi hotspots grew, so the library acted quickly to meet the demand.

The library also continues to host smaller in-person events, but even those contain virtual components that allow anyone to join in.

The events have also seen great success, with hundreds of people attending the adult and youth programs.

“It was also surprising to learn how much reach our virtual programs had,” said librarian Regina Feeney. “After the event I held [about the history of Freeport’s bars], I got a call from a woman in Louisiana who grew up in Freeport and had

watched the event. It really speaks to the technology we have available that we could connect.”

Among the biggest changes in the library this year was the retirement of director Kenneth Bellafiore in February. Bellafiore had served as director of the library for more than a decade, and has been with the library for 32 years.

“It’s been an honor and privilege to serve here,” Bellafiore, 62, said. “I felt like I’ve accomplished what I wanted to, and it’s time to move on to the next chapter of my life.”

Lee Ann Moltzen, who has been with library for just as long as Bellafiore, was named the new director.

The Freeport Memorial Public Library remains a pillar of the community. It is a gathering place, an educational facility, a recreation center, a social hub, a digital gathering place and an invaluable source of information at a time when so much is uncertain. Officials hope to continue providing for the community of Freeport.

he Long Island Art Council at Freeport, a nonprofit whose mission is to support and promote the arts in Freeport and neighboring communities, was founded 47 years ago.

Despite the challenges, the LIACF held its summer concert series on the Nautical Mile last summer, and this year, with about a half of the county now vaccinated against Covid-19, LIACF leaders said they hope to return the arts to Freeport and the South Shore.

The organization is working to bring back the bands from last year, as well as introduce a new performance from the EastLine Theatre group, which has agreed to put on its rendition of “Romeo and Juliet” in Freeport.

Local businesses will support the event in exchange for advertisement banners added to the stages. “We’re really hoping for extra community support this year since our events help bring

people down to the Nautical Mile,” said Lois Howes, president of the LIACF. The LIACF has also joined other art councils and Vision Long Island to promote #ShotToReunite, which calls on local artists to create and submit works of art that could be used in a campaign to boost confidence in the Covid-19 vaccine.

As the LIAFC works on these projects, along with reopening the Art Alcove and Art Alley at the Recreation Center, the ultimate hope is to once again hold the annual Arty Party this year, which serves as the largest celebration of the arts in Freeport.

Rotary Club steps up

F

or 75 years, the Freeport-Merrick Rotary Club has lived by its motto, “Service above self.”

But the Rotary has faced many obstacles since the coronavirus pandemic broke out in March 2020. The organization, which depends on public events for fundraising and community contact, faced dissipating funds and obscurity as large events were canceled and people fell into financial hardship, said club President Florence Marc-Charles, of Queens Village.

Despite the setbacks, Marc-Charles and her fellow Rotarians moved their weekly meetings to Zoom, and began brainstorming ways to help Freeport, which was among the hardest-hit communities in Nassau County.

The club has donated more than 6,000 masks to the village, helped stock the pantries at Long Island Cares’ Harry Chapin Food Bank and the Freeport Salvation Army, and distributed Christmas gift cards to local children living in shelters.

“The pandemic is still ongoing,” Marc-Charles

said, “and we plan on doing much more to help and protect Freeport this year.”

Vice President Marc Rigueur, of Huntington, said the Rotary never missed a beat, even when the shutdown forced the club to cancel its weekly gatherings.

“There was no slowdown,” Rigueur said.

“Everyone stepped [up] to do their part. We’re all out here doing our best to help the community.”

It was clear that personal protective equipment would be essential for people venturing out in public, so the Rotary joined the Million Masks Project, a national effort that urged people to collect and donate masks to those in need.

At the height of the pandemic in New York in April 2020, Rotary members raised money to purchase 600 face shields for local hospitals and clinics that were facing a shortage of PPE. Last summer, the club provided more masks and other PPE to the volunteers at the Cedarmore Corporation’s farmers market in Freeport, which offers fresh produce to local residents and jobs for teenagers and young adults.

Freeport Fire Department

T

he Freeport Fire Department comprises more than 300 volunteers from throughout the community. It is responsible for protecting nearly 45,000 people who live within the Freeport Fire District, responding to nearly 5,000 fires, EMS calls and other emergencies each year.

In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the department had implemented several policies to ensure the safety of its volunteers and the community.

Initially, the department limited firehouses to Class A and B volunteers, who are firefighters with few to no limitations on firefighting duties. Senior members, who were more susceptible to contract the virus, had been put on temporary leave.

In line with federal and state protocols, Freeport’s firehouses are sanitized at least once a day, and the equipment is sterilized after every run. Firefighters wear protective equipment when they are deployed, and interaction with property owners is limited.

Freeport Police

he Freeport Police Department has worked hard to meet the challenge of keeping residents and officers safe during and in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

In order to protect themselves, officers have worn masks, goggles, gloves and other protective clothing, and kept track of their equipment from day to day in case they start running low on anything.

The department now has a buzzer at its front door to let only two people at a time in, and there is plexiglass up on the doors and desks to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Officers also take staggered tours to avoid overcrowding at the locker rooms and desks.

Throughout the year, 30 officers had contracted Covid-19, about a third of the department, but all of them were able to recover and return to work.
