a letter from the
publisher The coronavirus crisis that erupted in March and carries on to this day in New York shook all of us to our core. East Meadow, however, remains strong. It is a community full of fighters. Superstorm Sandy and now Tropical Storm Isaias, which ravaged the the area, proved that. The storms pummeled our shores, but they never defeated our indomitable spirit to survive and thrive. Just as we saw in Sandy's wake, neighbors Stuart are now helping neighbors through the Covid-19 crisis and Isaias, delivering food and medical Richner supplies to vulnerable residents, providing meals for the jobless and just checking in on one another. Thankfully, as of this writing in mid-August, the coronavirus infection rate had dropped to .6 percent n Nassau County. Let us hope and pray it remains at or falls below that level so people stay safe, and we can continue East Meadow's successful reopening of the economy and soon begin reopening our schools. That will depend on all of us doing our parts — wearing our facial covers, maintaining social distance — not only today and tomorrow, but also likely for months to come. Throughout the crisis, the East Meadow Herald continued to provide invaluable news to the community, incuding information on institution closings, new safety protocols and, unfortunately, remembrances of lives lost. I want to thank our journalists for their commitment to the East Meadow community. Our staff, categorized as essential workers by Governor Cuomo, were out in the field regularly, even during the height of the pandemic, to ensure people who work and live in East Meadow had access to the best and most up-to-date information. Additionally, Richner Communications, the parent company of the East Meadow Herald, was proud to provide $500,000 in small business marketing grants to entrepreneurs across the South Shore, including many in the village. We know small businesses are the lifeblood of any community — especially East Meadow — so we are hopeful these funds will help your favorite stores and restaurants get back on their feet. In this edition of our annual community guide, we look at all that is wonderful about East Meadow, at the same time that we examine what has changed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Eleanor Roosevelt lived on the east side of present-day Salisbury Park Drive, near Valentine’s Road for four years, between ages 4 and 8. Above she is with her father Elliott at their estate Halfway Nirvana, on what is now Salisbury Park Drive.
East Meadow appeared in town records in 1658, during which it was designated as a place for cows to stay from April to October. At the time, horse racing was popular, and Gov. Richard Nicholls began a race on the “Little Plains” near Hempstead Village, naming the area Salisbury after the English Earl of Salisbury. Most of the earliest farm families were descendents of English colonial settlers, some of whom crossed Long Island Sound from Connecticut to form Hempstead Town in 1643. Farming was a way of life through the early decades of the 20th century, and local families worked the land alongside summer vacationers from Manhattan. The East Meadow School District is among the oldest in New York state and has continuously educated students for more than 200 years. The districts earliest students were taught in a rural one-room schoolhouse on the northwest corner of Front Street and then-Newbridge Avenue. East Meadow is home to a number of historical figures and celebrities, including Matt Serra, former UFC Welterweight Champion; Joy Mangano, the entrepreneur and inventor of the self-wringing Miracle Mop; and Eleanor Roosevelt, the former first lady of the United States, who spent part of her childhood in East Meadow.

The community of East Meadow was formed after members of the indigenous Massapequa, Merrick and Rockaway tribes sold the land to Englishmen John Carman and Robert Fordham.
•1665

A system of common schools was formed in Hempstead during the War of 1812, and from this division, East Meadow began a community with actual borders, known as District No. 3.
•1857
The Methodist Episcopal Church was established, making it the oldest house of worship in East Meadow.
•1888

Joseph J. Lannin, owner of the Garden City Hotel, Roosevelt Airfield, and the Boston Red Sox, developed four golf courses that made up the Salisbury Golf Club, now part of Eisenhower Park.

Golfer Walter Hagen won the Professional Golf Association Championship on Eisenhower Park’s Red Golf Course, then known as Salisbury Park.

The meadow to the east of the Hempstead Village was first referenced as East Meadow in town books when it became designated as a place for cows to graze from April to October.

East Meadow was occupied by British forces during the American Revolutionary War because of the amount of livestock herded there. It remained under British control until the end of the war.

A. T. Stewart, the “Merchant Prince” of New York City and one of the wealthiest people in the nation, purchased the common lands of the Great Hempstead Plains, which included a large portion of East Meadow.

Mrs. O.H.P. Belmont designed and built the Brookholt estate on what is now Mitchel Field and Mitchel Manor. While she was there, her son W.K. Vanderbilt Jr. launched the Vanderbilt Cup Races, a series of automobile races.

Borrelli’s Italian Restaurant opened in East Meadow.
•1963
The East Meadow Volunteer Firemen’s Association held its first meeting on Aug. 24.
The Hempstead Town Board purchased 12 acres of land to develop Veterans Memorial Park at Prospect and then-Newbridge avenues.

The Nassau County Board of Supervisors established the East Meadow Fire District.
The community dedicated a memorial at East Meadow High School to Ken Mushorn, a beloved teacher and coach from 1964 to 1999.

Entemann’s Bakery was established in East Meadow.
•1946
The “Meadowlarks,” the East Meadow Fire Department’s competitive team, took home the New York State Championship.
•1951
The population in the East Meadow School District was 25,000, which more than doubled six years later.
•1953
A group of residents came together to form the East Meadow Public Library, but the proposal was rejected when brought to a community vote. It was approved the following year.
•1961
The Nassau County jail was moved from Mineola to East Meadow.
•2004
Former President George W. Bush visited East Meadow for the groundbreaking of a new memorial at Eisenhower Park for the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

he East Meadow Public Library does more than just hold books. Its programs and special events for all ages, art exhibits, reference service, magazines, college catalogs, civil-service tests, eBooks, iPads and more draw thousands of participants from across Nassau County. Located in the heart of East Meadow on East Meadow Avenue and Front Street, its accessibility allows passersby to stop in for a book or program. Throughout its time in the community, the library has been able to meet its patrons’ needs. To enhance its services, the library is undergoing major renovations this year — for the first time since the early 1980s — after the community passed a $14.6 million bond in March 2017. Additions will include a new community reading area and an all-purpose room that will host an array of events such as concerts and guest author readings. The Library Board meets the first Wednesday of each month at 8 p.m. Meetings are open to the public. East Meadow Schools Coronavirus pandemic updates
District adjusts to remote learning, plans for reopening

W
hen the coronavirus pandemic shut down schools early in March, teachers and students were thrust into a new environment in less than 48 hours and challenged to seek alternative methods of teaching, learning, studying, socializing and achieving an educational experience in the East Meadow School District. Kerry Dunne, the principal of McVey Elementary School, began uploading the school’s morning announcements to the YouTube channel “Good Day McVey” for children to watch with their parents at home. Classes met through Zoom, including one class that was surprised by a virtual visit from Joe Gatto, of the television show “Impractical Jokers.” And students celebrated birthdays, graduations and other milestones by decorating their cars, driving in front of each other’s houses and honking and cheering. But as September approaches, dozens of administrators, teachers, parents, nurses and police officers have been working together to determine a plan to reopen. Gov. Andrew Cuomo mandated that school districts submit reopening plans to the state by July 31. The state is currently reviewing the plans and has yet to determine whether districts can reopen their buildings to students in the fall. But board President Matthew Melnick said that the district was not given any guidance on developing a plan. And Superintendent Kenneth Card Jr. added that doing so feels like “we are flying a plane in the dark.” “The best-case scenario is everyone back in school at the same time,” Melnick said. “The question now is if that’s not possible — which it seems like is going to be the case — what is our next-best option?” Parents have expressed their concerns over remote learning, and Card said that knew it “wasn’t perfect.” “The reasons why we’re engaging in these conversations now is because, in March, we had to go to distance learning on a dime,” he said. “We had to turn around, in 48 hours, and do something that we’ve never done before. That is why we have committees in place right now that are having conversations about what possible
options could be put in place and what are some of the learning gaps we may need to address.” To develop a plan to reopen, the district formed a School Reopening Committee, which conferred with the School Safety Task Force before creating a plan that was outlined in a PowerPoint presentation available on the district’s website. It included the results of a survey that was distributed to district parents. Asked to describe how comfortable they were with their children returning to school, 1,180 said “very comfortable,” 974 said “somewhat comfortable,” 435 said “somewhat uncomfortable” and 280 said “very uncomfortable.” Presented with a list of potential precautions for sending their children back to school, parents were asked which were most important. The highest-scoring concerns were: The school is cleaned at least once a day, staff and students regularly wash their hands, and hand sanitizer is provided in each classroom. The presentation also outlined protocol for staff members returning to work. All employees would answer a series of health-related questions before entering a building to prove that they are healthy. Social distancing would be required, and when not possible, staff members would be required to wear a mask or cloth face covering. Students would be encouraged, but not mandated, to do the same. Staff and students would be asked to avoid sharing supplies and convening in shared workspaces like copy rooms, conference rooms, break rooms and cafeterias. Throughout the summer, under Gov. Cuomo’s guidelines, the district has been offering courses at Bowling Green Elementary School to special education students who rely on an expanded school year. Card said that this program is giving the district “a preview of what is possible” and “the opportunity to make sure that our protocols and our systems are tight.” Christina Daly/Herald

Did you know? • The East Meadow School District is among the oldest in New York state and has continuously educated students for more than 200 years. The districts earliest students were taught in a rural one-room schoolhouse on the northwest corner of Front Street and Newbridge Avenue, now East Meadow Avenue. • Before Nassau University Medical Center was the 19-story hospital it is today, it was a 200-bed community hospital called Meadowbrook Hospital. It opened in 1935 and was not reconstructed and renamed until 1970. • Eisenhower Park is roughly 1.46 square miles and larger than Manhattan’s Central Park, which is roughly 1.32 square miles. • Matt Serra, former UFC Welterweight Champion, grew up in East Meadow before establishing his mixed martial arts training centers on Long Island. This year, he was accepted into the UFC Hall of Fame. • Joy Mangano, the entrepreneur and inventor of the self-wringing Miracle Mop, was born in East Meadow in 1956. • Jenna Ushkowitz, who played the character Tina Cohen-Chang on the Fox comedy-drama series “Glee,” was raised in East Meadow, moving from Seoul, South Korea, after she was adopted at 3, in 1989. • Snapple was previously headquartered in East Meadow before moving to its corporate office in Plano, Texas. The office is now occupied by the Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island. • Eleanor Roosevelt, the former First Lady of the U.S., spent part of her childhood in East Meadow.

Long Island Marathon slated for the fall

T
he Jovia 2020 Long Island Marathon, named after its title sponsor, kicks off at Eisenhower Park and sends runners into local communities and business districts and through county parks. Typically hosted each May, this year’s event was postponed to Oct. 2-4 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Named after its new title sponsor, the Jovia Financial Credit Union — formerly NEFCU — and in its second year with a new course, the marathon, which begins and ends in Eisenhower Park, is one of Long Island’s best-known running events. Thousands of runners compete in the marathon or one of four shorter races. Last year it saw a new route, among other additions such as a partnership with a smartphone application that allows spectators to live-track their friends and family members who are competing. There will be a number of changes this year to comply with pandemic guidelines. There is supposed to be 5K run on Friday, Oct. 2, a 10K on Saturday and a 13.1-mile half marathon on Sunday. There will be no full marathon or 35.5-mile challenge, however, and athletes will have the option of transferring their entries to a 22.4-mile challenge (all three remaining races). There will be no additional fees to do so for those who signed up for the full marathon, and runners who signed up for the 35.5-mile challenge and take part in the shorter combined challenge will receive a refund of $15, the price difference. Athletes who cannot participate on the new dates can either have their entries rolled over to the 2021 race, at no additional cost, or take part in a virtual race. Those who choose the latter will receive marathon “swag” and can upload their race results online. Other than the above, there will be no refunds. The county Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums previously oversaw the race before Corey Roberts, of the Baldwin-based company Race
Awesome, won the bid to become the race director for the 2019 event. He said that the race hadn’t had a makeover in decades and his goal was to make the race most exciting for runners and spectators. The marathon dates back to the inaugural Macombs Dam Park Marathon in the Bronx in 1958. That race was later renamed the Cherry Tree Marathon, but continued to be run in the Bronx until 1970, when it moved to Central Park. It was later named the Earth Day Marathon, and eventually moved from Manhattan to Roosevelt Raceway, and then to Eisenhower Park. In addition to its running events, today it also includes the Long Island Fitness and Health Expo and the marathon’s own Food Truck Festival. The East Meadow Chamber of Commerce also sets up shop at the festival and greeted residents and runners. Roberts, a native of Australia who co-owns Race Awesome with his wife, Stacey. His goal in changing the course was to treat runners to the scenery of county parks and give spectators more opportunities to cheer on friends and family members as they run through local business districts. Race Awesome names a main beneficiary at all of its events, and dedicated the 2019 Long Island Marathon to Friends of Karen, an area nonprofit that provides services to families of critically ill children. The 2019 winner was Dan Gargaro, of West Islip, and Alyssa Salese, of Huntington, was the first female finisher. Peter Hawkins, 54, of Malverne, remained the winner of the wheelchair marathon. Winning the half-marathon was Erick Obdulio Chavez Chox with Lori Brown as the first female finisher. Town of Hempstead
The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Don Clavin — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a twoyear term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.

I
n the middle of Nassau County lies a hamlet, rich with diversity, parks, organizations and familyowned businesses. It thrives with the help of community leaders and key members who ensure that children, veterans and families’ needs and rights are met. According to the census, 38,000 people — 14 percent Hispanic or Latino, 12 percent Asian, 5 percent African-American, and 69 percent white — call the small, yet humble hamlet home: East Meadow.

Schools and library The East Meadow community has one public school district, comprised of two high schools, two middle schools and five elementary schools, which also take in students from Salisbury. The schools are East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools, Woodland and W.T. Clarke middle schools, and Barnum Woods, Bowling Green, McVey, Meadowbrook and Parkway elementary schools. The elementary level sees students from kindergarten — the first full-kindergarten year started in 2015 — through fifth grade, and the middle schools take in sixth through eighth grade. The district’s superintendent is in his third school year and Dr. Kenneth Card Jr. is also a Navy veteran and 15year administrator prior to his tenure at East Meadow. The district appointed Card after a year-long search for a new leader. The East Meadow PTA Council is a coalition of school PTAs that contributes to district-wide initiatives and hosts workshops through its ACCESS Committee. East Meadow is also home to three parochial schools and eight nursery schools. The East Meadow Public Library is renowned for its wide array of programs, services and vast book collection. After the community approved a historic, first-time school and library joint bond in March 2017, the library’s approved $14.6 million is slated for infrastructure upgrades, a new all-purpose room/ theater, and an outdoor reading garden to accommodate

2020 - 2021 Continued from previous page patrons. Each year, it hosts EMcon — perhaps its largest event — an anime festival that draws thousands from across Long Island. The library’s current director is Carol Probeyahn. The East Meadow Fire Department headquarters is on East Meadow Avenue, and the department has roughly 260 volunteers. It is led by four commissioners, and has five fire stations, four engine companies, two ladder companies, one rescue company, a ladies’ auxiliary unit, a paramedic fly car program and a safety officers program. Its current chief is Philip Fertitta. Parks and recreation Parks are a big part of the East Meadow community, and none is more recognizable than Eisenhower Park. At 930 acres, it is larger than New York City’s Central Park, and has dozens of athletic fields, 16 lighted tennis courts, a basketball court, three 18-hole golf courses, picnic areas and fitness trails. Eisenhower Park is also the home of the Nassau County Aquatic Center, which has a
EAST MEADOW GUIDE 50-meter pool. Built in 1998, the swimming facility hosted the Goodwill Games, and now hosts other major swimming competitions. It is also open to the public. The Twin Rinks Ice Center opened to the public in the summer of 2014, adjacent to the Aquatic Center. It’s an 80,000-square-foot indoor facility with two indoor ice rinks, an outdoor rink and a sports recreational center. Other parks in East Meadow include the Town of Hempsteadoperated Edward J. Speno Memorial Park on East Meadow Avenue, named after Edward Speno, who was the first president of the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce in 1954. Veterans Memorial Park on Prospect Avenue, which the Town of Hempstead also runs, is the home of a public outdoor swimming pool. Adjacent to the pool, on East Meadow Avenue, sits East Meadow Town Square, designed and built by the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce. Veterans Park is home to an 1,800-pound marble statue, a steel beam from the World Trade Center and a commemorative footstone listing the names of
Page 27 East Meadow residents who died on Sept. 11, 2001. The memorial was installed by the East Meadow Kiwanis Club. Community Groups The community boasts active and diverse community organizations, including the Council of East Meadow Community Organizations, the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club of East Meadow, the Pope Pius XII Knights of Columbus Council 4422, Knights of Pythias East Meadow Lodge 774 Alliance, and the Community Association of Stewart Avenue. The groups organize the community’s largest annual events, including the Memorial Day parade, Community Pride Day, Culinary Delights and Christmas tree and menorah lightings in the winter. Veterans groups include American Legion Post 1082, Jewish War Veterans Post 709, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2736. Churches, synagogues and mosques of all different faiths can be found throughout East Meadow, and seniors find a home at the Salisbury/East Meadow Senior Center.

Worshipers adjust to social distancing guidelines By Brian Stieglitz
C
hurches, synagogues, mosques and other places of worship throughout East Meadow have adapted to social distancing guidelines and other safety measures to slow the spread of Covid-19 while also ensuring their parishioners still observe their respective religious rites and rituals. The Long Island Muslim Society, in East Meadow, was the first of many institutions to shut down and stopped offering in-person services last mid-February. According to Rahat Hossain, a board member, Islamic worshippers at the LIMS typically maintain contact while praying by standing shoulder to shoulder. They also kneel on a carpet, which would have to be shampooed after each use — five times a day. All services were transferred to Zoom and livestreamed on YouTube. The LIMS reopened on July 20, installing a tarp over the carpet that members spray with disinfectant in between prayers. The LIMS has also hired a cleaning company called Enviroshield to come in twice a month and disinfect the entire building. Worshippers stand on markers that are spaced apart by six feet. And those over 65, women and children are recommended to stay home and resume praying over Zoom or YouTube livestream. On entering the Mosque, all parishioners are required to fill out a contract tracing survey, have their temperature taken and sanitize their hands. The capacity has been reduced from 126 to 60. As of Aug. 17, Temple B’nai Torah in Wantagh, to which many East Meadow residents belong, continued to host services and programs remotely via Zoom. The office remains open for clergy, and office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Thursday. “We believe that at this time, the Jewish values of saving lives, preventing danger, and
responsibility to our neighbors demand that we maintain our distance as a religious community,” reads an explanation on their website. Like most churches that share Holy Communion — Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Episcopalian, for example — the manner of giving and receiving has undergone changes as part of each denomination’s commitment to keeping worshippers as safe as possible. Eastern Orthodox Christians receive the sacrament from a chalice, and the mixture of bread and wine is administered with a special spoon. None of that has changed at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, in East Meadow, a parish serving all of the South Shore, with members from as far away as Queens. “We believe we’re receiving the body and blood of Christ,” the parish’s pastor, the Very Rev. Martin Kraus, explained at the beginning of the restrictions in March. “It cannot be corrupted.” At 25 percent capacity, the church can allow up to 38 worshippers, clergy and altar servers. Holy Trinity maintains social distancing, with worshippers in every other pew. Families may sit together, but individuals sit at the far ends of the pews. Communicants come to the altar one at a time; take a napkin to place under their chins; and then discard the napkin afterward on a tray beside the priest. The usual Orthodox custom of kissing icons has been suspended, and the remaining communion bread — the antidoron — is reserved in sanitary packaging and handed out after the liturgy, rather than being consumed immediately after receiving the sacrament, as is customary. It’s time to get out and about By Leah Chiappino
E
ast Meadow is home to several parks and open spaces for residents and their families to relax, unwind and enjoy the outdoors, while staying safe during the coronavirus pandemic. Nassau County’s Eisenhower Park in East Meadow boasts 930 acres, and has opportunities for residents of all ages. Children can enjoy three different playgrounds, and families can visit bocce courts and inlaid chess and checkers boards. For an hourly seasonal fee, residents can practice tennis at one of the 16 lighted courts, or enjoy one of the park’s 17 baseball fields, soccer fields or two football fields. Eisenhower also is home to the Northwell Health Ice Center, featuring two indoor and one outdoor hockey rinks. County residents can purchase a leisure pass for a tri-annual fee of $36 for access to the Nassau County Aquatic Center at Eisenhower, an 80,000-square-foot facility equipped with a 50-by-68-meter pool that has hosted numerous competitions at which race records have been broken. It’s also a space for members of the community to exercise or enjoy a leisurely swim. The park has a two-mile fitness trail with 20 exercise stations. There are also three 18hole golf courses that have hosted the PGA championships, a driving range and two different mini-golf courses at a discounted rate with a leisure pass. To ensure social distancing, tee times are set to be booked by reservation only, and only every 16 minutes. No congregating is permitted. The Leisure Pass along with a small fee also discounts and/or provides residents with access to Bay Park, Cantiague Park, Cedar Creek Park, Christopher Morley Park, Nickerson Beach Park, North Woodmere Park, Wantagh Park, Mitchel
Athletic Complex and Nassau County Rifle & Pistol Range. Discounts apply to seniors, veterans and disabled residents. Reserved especially for the Town of Hempstead residents, East Meadow boasts several other green spaces and parks for residents to exclusively enjoy. For instance, Speno Park has playgrounds, handball, shuffleboard, basketball and tennis courts. The park is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the summer. Another hidden gem is Veterans Memorial Park and Pool. Because of the Covid-19 crisis, masks are required at all times that visitors are out of the pool. Guests must bring their own chairs, and no food is permitted. The pool is free to seniors with the Senior Summer Beach Program pass, which was mailed to residents over 60 in June and grants them free access to town pools and beaches. Though parking is free, there is an $8 dollar entrance fee for East Meadow residents and $9 entrance fee for residents living outside East Meadow, though discounts apply to seniors, veterans, children ages 5 to 9, those with disabilities and volunteers. Salisbury Court Ballfields in East Meadow also offer field use by permit only and are free to children and senior citizen leagues. Adult recreation leagues can use the field for an annual fee of $302.50. All parks listed are encouraging visitors to wear a face covering, and stay six feet apart from others when possible.
