The coronavirus crisis that erupted in March and carries on to this day in New York shook all of us to our core. The Bellmores, however, remain strong. They are communities full of fighters. Superstorm Sandy and now Tropical Storm Isaias, which ravaged the area, proved that. The storms pummeled our shores, but they never defeated our indomitable spirit to survive and thrive. Just as we saw in Sandy's wake, neighbors are now helping neighbors through the Covid-19 Stuart crisis and Isaias, delivering food and medical Richner supplies to vulnerable residents, providing meals for the jobless and just checking in on one another. Thankfully, as of this writing in late August, the coronavirus infection rate had dropped to about 1 percent in New York. Let us hope and pray it remains at or falls below that level so people stay safe, and we can continue the Bellmores' successful reopening of the economy and soon begin reopening our schools. That will depend on all of us doing our parts — wearing our facial covers, maintaining social distance — not only today and tomorrow, but also likely for months to come. Throughout the crisis, the Bellmore Herald Life continued to provide invaluable news to the community, including information on institution closings, new safety protocols and, unfortunately, remembrances of lives lost. I want to thank our journalists for their commitment to the Bellmore community. Our staff, categorized as essential workers by Governor Cuomo, were out in the field regularly, even during the height of the pandemic, to ensure people who work and live in the Bellmores had access to the best and most up-to-date information. Additionally, Richner Communications, the parent company of the Bellmore Herald Life, was proud to provide $500,000 in small business marketing grants to entrepreneurs across the South Shore, including many in the area. We know small businesses are the lifeblood of any community — especially the Bellmores — so we are hopeful these funds will help your favorite stores and restaurants get back on their feet. o doubt much has changed in the Bellmores over the years. What was once a sleepy farming and fishing community is now a frenetic suburb, full of momand-pop shops, top-notch schools and sprawling parks. Alison Frankel, president and founder of the South Bellmore Civic Association, said, “Bellmore is unique because we have so many family-owned businesses, which is rare these days. I love walking with the stroller around the block and passing beautiful homes on the water, while enjoying the bay breeze. “My favorite community event,” Frankel continued, “is the street fair and festival by the train station — especially since it’s so dog-friendly.” The Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores annually sponsors the Bellmore Family Street Festival, which is held in Bellmore Village, the community’s downtown, in September or October. Over the years, it has become the largest family street fair in Nassau County, annually attracting more than 100,000 fair-goers. Three school districts serve the community –– Bellmore, North Bellmore and the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District. The two elementary districts feed into the Central District. The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District spent an average of $23,907 per student in 2016-17, compared to the statewide average of $23,370, according to the New York State Education Department. Ninety-four to 98 percent of the district’s graduates attend college, compared with the state average of 78 percent. Marie Testa, superintendent of the North Bellmore School District, has lived in the community nearly her entire life. The Bellmores, she said, “have a small-town feel. We don’t have a lot of commercial businesses that other towns have. We have Bellmore Village as the heart of the community.” A big part of what makes the schools so great is the close partnership between teachers and students, Testa said. “The teachers love the students. It’s that simple,” she said. “They want the best for the children. It’s a very caring community.” The superintendent added that Bellmorites are kindhearted people. “It’s a safe neighborhood, warm, inviting, close-knit. It’s a homey place to be,” she said. The first records of the community that is now the Bellmores appeared in the mid- to late-1600s. It all began when a prominent farmer, John Smith, gave his son, Jeremiah, a land deed for 100 acres of salt marsh. The marsh provided a fine hay, ideal for raising cattle. Soon, people came from all around to lay claim and buy acreage on the marsh. Continued on next page

Robert Bedell, another of Bellmore’s earliest settlers, moved to the community during the 1640s. He was among the more successful salt marsh farmers. The Bedell home, built by John Bedell, Robert’s son, still stands at Merrick Road and South Saint Marks Avenue. It has been declared an historical landmark. Another early pioneer was Thomas Southard, a farmer from what is now North Bellmore, who owned 200 acres of land in 1655. Southard’s home still sits by what is now the Southern State Parkway. It, too, has since been declared a landmark. In the late 1700s, George Washington marched through the community to decorate Revolutionary War heroes. As Washington made his way along Merrick Road, he noted the abundance of Bellmore’s salt grasses in his journal. Before Bellmore became Bellmore in the 1880s, the community was divided into two distinct neighborhoods. North Bellmore was known as Smithville South, and Bellmore was called New Bridge. In the 1860s, shortly after the Civil War, the Long Island Rail Road was built a few feet south of where the current trestle stands near Sunrise Highway. At the time, the community comprised mainly fishermen and farmers, who used the Long Island Rail Road to ferry their goods to market. The railroad unified the community. In fact, the Long Island Rail Road renamed the SmithvilleNewbridge region as Bellmore in the early 1880s. There are probably 150 stories as to how Bellmore got its name. According to local historians, Bellmore was likely given its moniker to connote “beautiful village.”
Bellmore has had its fair share of notable talent. TV weather prognosticator Elliot “Storm” Field graduated from Mepham High School in 1966, and TV producer Roone Arledge in 1948. Actor George Kennedy lived in Bellmore and attended St. Barnabas Parochial School. Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani lived in North Bellmore. And Central Intelligence Agency Director William Casey also reportedly called Bellmore home at one time. Many famous Civil War veterans also lived in Bellmore, including Andrew Jackson Russell, who fought at Gettysburg and died in the 1930s. The WEAF Radio tower, which broadcasted from Maple Avenue in the 1930s, was an important landmark in Bellmore. Restaurants have always been a mainstay in Bellmore. The Bavarian Village on Sunrise Highway is a memorable piece of Bellmore history. In its heyday, during the 1930s, the German restaurant, a place remembered for “immense fun,” was often booked for weddings. Its cuisine attracted people from throughout the metropolitan area. It was later renamed Sunrise Village. McCluskey’s Steakhouse, which closed in 1995, was famous throughout the metropolitan area. Patrons from as far as New Jersey would venture to the eatery for its steak and fried onions. Trudie Cowen founded the Historical Society of the Bellmores in 1974, shortly before the community’s 300th anniversary. Today, the Bellmore/North Bellmore community, which is home to roughly 36,000 residents, stands as one of Nassau County’s finest communities. Bellmore Village, the restored “old-fashioned” downtown, now links Bellmore’s past with the present.

Seven-year-old John Whittemore fell through the railroad bridge into a pond and was saved from drowning by Clara Barid, 14, according to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

A Brooklyn Daily Eagle reporter, on a tour of Long Island Rail Road stations, described Bellmore as “merely a passenger station to accommodate the people residing toward the bay shore.”
•1905
The Daily Eagle reported a “peculiar” robbery in the home of Adelaide Buchholtz, who was robbed of $300 worth of jewelry and money while she was away for the evening. “The place where the money was secreted was known to but two persons outside the family,” the Eagle reported, and “strong clews were reported.”

The first building of Mepham High School was built; its current campus was formed in 1937.

ellmore-Merrick’s five school districts — consisting of four elementary districts and one high school district — are consistently ranked among the top school systems in New York state, even the country, with an array of programs to nurture “the whole child.” The four elementary districts — Bellmore, Merrick, North Bellmore and North Merrick — feed into the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, one of a few such central districts across the state. The Central High School District boasts a 94 to 99 percent graduation rate annually, with many students receiving acceptances to top-rated colleges across the country. Just this year, Niche.com ranked the district among the Top 100 in the country. The elementary districts comprise three to five schools each. The Central High School District is made up of Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham high schools and Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools. Each of the high schools offers advanced programs in the arts, business, engineering and science research. Magnet cosmetology and drama programs, which attract students from all three high schools, are housed at Calhoun. Additionally, the Meadowbrook Alternative Program, an alternative high school housed at the Brookside School in North Merrick, offers a special program for students who wish to excel outside their home high schools.

Central High School District officials plan reopening The district is planning three potential scenarios for September. Bellmore-Merrick’s newly formed reopening committee laid out three possibilities: a return to school with safety guidelines, a return to remote learning and a hybrid model. In preparation for a return to online learning, the district has made “major enhancements” to the practices employed while schools were shut down. The distancelearning model has been revamped, including designating Google Classroom as the primary means by which classes will be held throughout the district. Students can also expect a more structured learning experience, as attendance and participation will be mandated. Numerical grading will also return, as opposed to the no-harm grading policy used after the shutdown. Masks will be required for in-person classes, and desks will be spaced out to follow social-distancing requirements. Hand-sanitizing stations will be abundant in hallways, which will be converted to one-way pathways. The hybrid model for reopening blends the two plans, with students alternating between in-person and online learning. In this model, teachers must prepare materials for students to watch or read the night before their class, so students can come prepared with questions the next day — rather than having the teacher present that material in an in-person class.

The Bellmores' schoolchildren learn from a distance
T
he Bellmores' exceptional school systems are the beating heart of the community. Local schools play a vital role in creating cohesion and bringing residents together. However, schools have also been among the hardest-hit institutions during the coronavirus pandemic. All school districts in the Bellmores shifted to a remote learning plan in mid-March. From classes and school athletics to clubs and graduation, the districts suddenly needed to adapt. “It was a dramatic change from the day-today norm, but we successfully adjusted thanks to our extremely supportive community members,” said Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Superintendent John DeTommaso. “The most important thing is the health and safety of the students and staff,” said Bellmore Schools Superintendent Dr. Joseph Famularo. All academic and extracurricular activities, including classes, tests and clubs took place remotely for the rest of the 2019-2020 academic year. Graduations were held in person in late June, and were broken into several limited-capacity ceremonies to comply with social distancing. The Bellmores' two elementary districts and one Central High School District have developed three types of plans that were issued to the state, including:
1. A return to remote/distance learning. 2. Resumption of in-person instruction, with numerous health and safety precautions. 3. Or a hybrid model combining the two. “We are proud and honored every day to serve the Bellmore-Merrick community, and will continue to do our best as we eagerly await seeing all our kids and families in September,” read a joint statement from Bellmore-Merrick’s superintendents. “The goal is to provide the best possible quality education we can to all of our students and their families regardless of which plan is followed,” DeTommaso said. The superintendents also maintained faith that the difficulties posed by the pandemic could be managed. “The district’s mission statement is to lead and learn, and that’s exactly what we’re committed to doing,” Famularo said. “Staying strong together is what we need to do,” DeTommaso added. “I’m confident that the district will work incredibly hard for our students and their families with all of our abilities and heart.”

Libraries
he Bellmore Memorial Library and the North Bellmore Public Library are both ingrained in the long history of the Bellmores and continue to serve as vital parts of the community. The Bellmores’ first library was organized by community members in 1948, a singular room inside of a wooden schoolhouse with only 150 books. More than 70 years later, the Bellmore Memorial Library and the North Bellmore Public Library serve as spacious, vibrant community centers, providing a wide range of programs and services to residents. In June 2018, the North Bellmore Public Library underwent a significant expansion project that lasted until August 2019 — its only real renovation since 1986. The library gained an additional 4,500 square feet, making space for a new community room, a specialneeds area, a fireplace for the adult room and a children’s library that nearly doubled in size. The library’s expansion and renovation design won an award for design excellence from the regional chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The libraries’ services are especially valuable to the community during the summer when they kick off reading clubs and provide entertainment and enrichment for students who are out of school. All summer programs were facilitated online this year. In response to Covid-19, the libraries created online events for all ages, including exercise classes, book discussions, story time for children, and arts and crafts at the North Bellmore Public Library.

Libraries keep readers engaged online during the pandemic

mid the shutdowns caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the Bellmore Memorial Library and North Bellmore Public Library bolstered their digital presences to bring patrons together. They now offer a wide variety of eBooks, audio books, digital magazines, movies, databases and other online materials to keep readers learning from home. The libraries’ services are especially valuable to the community during the warmer months when they kick off summer reading clubs and provide entertainment and enrichment for students out of school. All summer programs were carried out online this year. By signing up and writing at least one book review each week, participants were entered into a raffle for a chance to win a prize. The libraries also created online events for all ages, including exercise classes, book discussions, story times for children, and arts and crafts sessions. The Bellmore Memorial Library’s newest 3D printers — which were acquired shortly before the Covid-19 pandemic — were put to good use to help alleviate a shortage of personal protective equipment that threatened operations at Nassau County hospitals. More than 100 plastic face shields were printed and distributed to front-line
workers. As of July 20, the Bellmore Memorial Library opened for browsing and in-person checkout of materials. At press time in late August, patrons could spend 30 minutes in the library, so long as they followed markers on the floor to maintain proper social distancing and did not congregate. Outdoor book drops continued to be used for returns, and curbside pickup remained an option for those who did not want to enter. To ensure the safety of library staff and patrons, in-person programming and computer use were not available. The North Bellmore Public Library also opened for in-person browsing, and at press time, was still offering contactless pickup of library materials via requests made online or by phone. ince 2017, the Nassau County Police Department’s 1st Precinct has been housed in a 20,000-square-foot, state of the art facility on Merrick Road in Baldwin, which includes a line-up room, several private interview rooms, a locker room and break room. The building is designed to make sure that crime suspects cannot interact with members of the public inside the precinct without authorization. A plaque at the entrance states that the building is dedicated to “the brave men and women of the Nassau County Police Department, past, present and future.” The 1st Precinct encompasses Baldwin, South Hempstead, Uniondale, Roosevelt, East Meadow, North Merrick, North Bellmore, Merrick, Bellmore, and parts of North Wantagh and Wantagh. The 7th Precinct, on Merrick Road in Seaford, serves parts of Bellmore, as well as Merrick, Wantagh, North Wantagh, Seaford, the Massapequas and Massapequa Park.

Newbridge Road Park and Pool
N
ewbridge Road Park is a multi-faceted recreation center featuring an outdoor pool, indoor skating rink, playgrounds, recreation courts and fields, and a dog park. The large hill located near the ice skating rink is a popular destination for sledders in the winter, while warm weather gathers residents inside the recreation courts to play sports like basketball, handball, tennis, and pickleball. This summer, the park is open to residents and will continue to offer limited events for the community, adapting its programming to ensure the safety of residents and staff. Interested residents will be able to participate in the socially distanced events run by the Town of Hempstead, such as drive-in movie nights and concerts. Newbridge Arena offers private and group ice skating lessons, hockey clubs and public skate sessions, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, there were no public sessions being offered at the time of publication. Hockey youth programs are still in session, and those interested in learning how to skate can still register for summer skating lessons with additional regulations. Some precautions that the rink is taking include requiring face coverings in all areas except for the ice, prohibiting the use of the lobby as a lounge, and implementing a “oneway” traffic system to enforce social distancing. The Newbridge Park Pool is a popular summer attraction among Bellmore residents, featuring two pools, three diving boards, swim lanes, a concession stand and a seating
area. In June, dozens of residents were seen cooling off at the pool on opening day, excited to be back in the water after a late opening due to Covid-19. Guests can expect several sanitary and socialdistancing protocols, with capacity limited to 50 percent for the daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. hours of operation. Masks are required to be worn when walking to and from the pool, to the restroom or when talking to on-duty lifeguards. Masks are not required in the water. Restrooms are open, changing rooms are closed, and visitors must bring their own chairs — those at the facility are not available for use.

A message from the
NorTh Bellmore Fire DepArTmeNT
T
he priority of the North Bellmore Fire Department has always been the health and safety of the community and our members in both emergency and non-emergency situations. Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have implemented extra precautions to reduce the chances of spreading the virus. We reduced the number of people coming into contact with one another as best as we could, firehouses were closed with the exception of alarms, and personnel were only allowed into the firehouse one at a time to conduct inspections and maintenance of apparatus and equipment. Disinfecting stations were placed around the firehouse, and teams were tasked with disinfecting equipment. While in the firehouse, each member was required to wear a mask. To avoid a disruption in training, which is of extreme importance in the fire service, we conducted online training to make sure that we were prepared for any situation in the community. Low-risk alarms were delegated to the chief’s office, and only the chief’s department responded
to such calls, limiting the number of personnel responding to four people maximum. If needed, those calls could be upgraded to allow for the appropriate apparatus and personnel to respond. EMTs were provided with additional personal protective equipment when deemed necessary, and personnel were required to wear masks at all times when out in the community and in contact with one another. S
ince our founding in 1971, Bellmore-Merrick EMS has been focused on the health and safety of the people we serve as well as our workers on the front lines. Fast forward nearly 50 years and these values still hold true, thanks to the help and generosity of the community. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, BellmoreMerrick EMS has been available to provide the high level of service and patient care we have performed for decades. Since the beginning of this crisis, we have been in close contact with Nassau County officials, the Nassau County Police Department, the county Department of Health and all of our neighboring fire departments. As an agency, we took additional precautions even before Covid-19 became the crisis we now face today. We instituted multiple advanced life support crews in house 24/7, allowing us to respond to emergency calls even faster than before. We also made changes to our current policies regarding member safety and the use of personal protective equipment. While responding to calls in which any Covid-19 symptoms were present, our workers wore full PPE, including a mask, eye shield, gloves and gown not only to protect themselves but also the patient and loved ones at the scene. We also began conducting pre-contact screenings on emergency calls before contacting patients; this includ-
ed briefly questioning the patient and any family members present to see if anyone was experiencing coronavirus symptoms. We implemented daily wellness checks for personnel and installed additional hand sanitizer stations throughout our Bellmore headquarters. After each call, all non-disposable equipment and ambulances were cleaned and sanitized for the next patient. Additionally, once a month, we have an outside cleaning and sterilization service thoroughly sanitize our vehicles. Everything we do as an agency is greatly impacted by the community we serve. Since we do not receive any funding from taxes and are separate from the local fire departments, we rely on your generosity to continue our service to you — our friends and neighbors. No one knows when an emergency will occur, but one thing you can be sure of is Bellmore-Merrick EMS will be there for you. Keeping the faith amid a pandemic
B
ellmore welcomes a broad spectrum of religious denominations and diverse religious backgrounds, and the town’s faith institutions play an integral role in creating a sense of community. From charitable acts like food and coat drives to extracurricular religious education for Bellmore’s youth, these places of worship continuously bring residents together. In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, local churches and synagogues have been forced to adapt to provide essential services to the community. St. John Lutheran Church in Bellmore prides itself on its tight-knit congregation. Several parishioners contracted Covid-19, including one congregant who works as an emergency room nurse, but all fortunately won their battles with the virus. The church suspended all in-person services in March and shifted most services to online live streams. Congregants now get the chance to participate in online prayer via Zoom and Facebook three times a week. Pastor Nancy Rakoczy also leads a weekly adult bible study every Friday via Zoom. Additionally, she sends out daily emails to keep spirits up. The church intends to monitor the developing Covid-19 situation and will make a decision on reopening in-person services as soon as it can ensure the safety and health of its congregants. Congregation Beth Ohr in Bellmore has also faced similar obstacles. All services, including weekly prayer and Hebrew school classes, have been moved to Zoom and YouTube live streams. Other activities, such as Torah study and book club, have also shifted to an online format. But difficulties emerged in providing prayer service on Shabbat, Judaism’s day of rest, in which the use of any technology is forbidden, as it is a form of work. Congregation Beth Ohr offers live-
stream Shabbat services on Friday nights to allow congregants to observe the Sabbath while adhering to the laws and customs of the holy day. Since the onset of the pandemic, Congregation Beth Ohr has launched a food voucher program in partnership with Bagel Boss of Merrick to provide meals to North Bellmore families in need. In-person activities will resume once it is deemed safe enough to do so. The Jaam’e Masjid Mosque in Bellmore, which serves a vibrant Muslim community and offers various services, programs and daily Salahs, has also made adjustments amid the new normal. It has continued to hold daily in-person prayer under new safety measures, including greatly reduced capacity, social distancing, mandatory mask and glove wearing and placing down paper sheets on the carpeted prayer areas. A security guard is also present at all times to enforce these guidelines. Additionally, the length of Friday prayer has been reduced to less than 10 minutes rather than the traditional 30 minutes. The mosque also held a special prayer service on Eid al Adha, in which congregants split up into several smaller groups and followed safety measures. Other services, such as daily Quran readings and Sunday school, have been moved online to Zoom for the time being. Town & County Nassau County Nassau County is governed by an elected Legislature, which comprises members from 19 districts. It includes an independent budget director, who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters. Residents may submit petitions for proposed laws that legislators must consider. Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles, with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Donald Clavin — and a six-member Town Council. The council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.

The Bellmore PAL has many programs for all children from Pre School to Senior’s in High School. These programs help the children to learn sportsmanship, and develop athletic skills for future years. Many of our children have come back, as adults, to volunteer as coaches, commissioners or staff members.
