No one saw the coronavirus pandemic coming. No one expected it to last more than a handful of weeks. No one could have imagined the terrible death toll it would exact. The past 18 months tested all of us beyond our limits. Baldwinites, however, remain strong. These communities are full of fighters. Now we understand just how resilient we are. As we saw in Superstorm Sandy's wake in 2012, neighbors have been helping neighbors Stuart throughout the Covid-19 crisis, delivering food Richner and medical supplies to vulnerable residents, providing meals for the jobless and just checking in on one another. Thankfully, as of this writing in early August, some 80 percent of Nassau County residents had received at least their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccines, and the infection rate had dropped locally about 3 percent. Let us hope and pray it remains at or falls below that level so people remain safe, and we can continue our successful reopening of the economy. That will depend on all of us doing our parts — most importantly, scheduling a vaccination appointment if you have not already made one. Throughout the crisis, the Baldwin Herald has provided invaluable news to the community, including information on institution closings, new safety protocols and, unfortunately, remembrances of lives lost. I want to thank our journalists for their commitment to the community. Our staff, categorized as essential workers by Governor Cuomo, have been out in the field regularly, even during the height of the pandemic, to ensure people who work and live in Baldwin had access to the best and most up-to-date information. Additionally, Richner Communications, the parent company of the Baldwin Herald, was proud to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in small business marketing grants to entrepreneurs across the South Shore, including many in the community. We know small businesses are the lifeblood of any community — especially the Baldwinites — so we are hopeful these funds will help your favorite stores and restaurants get back on their feet. In this edition of our annual community guide, we look at all that is wonderful about Baldwin residents, at the same time that we examine what has changed because of the coronavirus pandemic. ong Island is home to 173 hamlets, 37 of which are in the Town of Hempstead. Baldwin may seem like one of many when looking at sheer numbers, but the close-knit nature of the community is what separates Baldwin from its counterparts. Driving west on Sunrise Highway brings residents of neighboring communities from Freeport to Rockville Centre before they even notice the Long Island Rail Road station, built in 1868 tucked, alongside the highway. A quick turn north onto Grand Avenue reveals Wick’s Florist, Fruitera and Greenhouse, a family operation that has beautified Baldwin since 1927. Heading farther north brings travelers to the Baldwin Historical Museum, which has dedicated nearly 50 years to preserving the history of Baldwin while encouraging and engaging the community. Driving up Grand Avenue, expect to be met with school buses transporting students to and from Baldwin High School, which educates thousands of students every year. In March, the original expectations of students, teachers, faculty members and families for the 2019-2020 school year were uprooted when the Covid-19 pandemic escalated and classes shifted online. The Baldwin School District adapted to this new platform and method of learning to best continue their students’ education. The Baldwin community quickly got involved and provided support through many community, volunteer and individual initiatives. The Milburn Creek borders the majority of the eastern side of Baldwin and shares the Milburn Creek Park with Freeport. An area rich with history now serves as a place for Baldwin residents and surrounding community members to relax by the Milburn Pond. For half of 2020, park goers maintained social distancing and followed state health guidelines during the Covid-19 pandemic in an effort to appreciate the flora and fauna Baldwin has to offer. Baldwin may not be the epicenter of attention, but the people who live here can attest that the community is strong and continually growing. Between volunteer opportunities and various hamlet happenings, Baldwin is a supportive community to call home.

Bob Beckwith: FDNY veteran Bob Beckwith is a retired FDNY veteran who worked for the department for more than 30 years. Beckwith stood next to President George W. Bush as he addressed the nation over a megaphone after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and appeared on the front page of The New York Times. Beckwith has lived in Baldwin with his family for more than 50 years.

Granville Carter: Master craftsman Granville Carter grew up in Maine. As a teenager, he took up wood carving and caught the attention of local newspapers. He created several dioramas, one being used in the Disney film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” He formally studied the craft and became a prolific sculptor. He retired to Baldwin, where he died in 1992.

Dee Snider: Twisted Sister singer Although he was born in Queens, Dee Snider grew up in Baldwin. He graduated from Baldwin High School in 1973. He came to prominence as the frontman of the heavy metal band Twisted Sister, who were a huge hit on Long Island and then nationally and internationally.

Laura Gillen: Former Town of Hempstead supervisor Laura Gillen was born in Baldwin. In November 2017, she won the election for supervisor for the Town of Hempstead. She was the first Democrat in more than 100 years to win the position. An attorney, she now lives in Rockville Centre.

Jonathan Demme: Director of “Silence of the Lambs” Jonathan Demme was born in Baldwin in 1944, but moved to southwest Florida where he attended and graduated high school. After graduating the University of Florida, Demme began a successful career in film. He won the Academy Award for Best Director for his work on “Silence of the Lambs.”
Dennis Reagan Hurley: Federal judge Denis Reagan Hurley was born in 1937 in Baldwin. He went on to earn degrees from Fordham, the University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University. In 1991, he was appointed by President George H.W. Bush to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, where he still serves.

James McLurkin: Professor at Rice University James McLurkin graduated from Baldwin Senior High School in 1990. He is an engineering assistant professor at Rice University, specializing in robotics. McLurkin appeared on PBS in 2005 with robots of his own creation. He received a Ph.D in computer science from M.I.T. in 2008.

Taylor Dayne: Singer Taylor Dayne, singer of the hit song “Tell it to My Heart,” grew up in Baldwin and graduated from Baldwin High School. She then launched a successful career in music, and later in acting. Billboard Magazine ranked her as the 28th most successful female dance artist of all time.
Scott Rudin: EGOT Producer Baldwin native Scott Rudin was an assistant to a theater producer at 16. He and his company, Scott Rudin Productions, casted several Broadway shows such as “Annie.” He became the first producer to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award, known as an EGOT.

Gabby Hayes: Vaudeville actor Gabby Hayes was born in New York City. After running away from home at 17, he became a successful actor during the Vaudeville days. He and his wife retired to Baldwin at the age of 26, but he lost his life savings in the Stock Market Crash of 1929, so he was forced back into work. He and his wife moved to Hollywood and Hayes acted in several western films. Hayes has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Laura Curran: Nassau County executive Laura Curran and her husband, John, moved to Baldwin in 1997 and have lived there since. Curran made history in November 2017 when she won the election as Nassau County executive, becoming the first woman ever to do so. She previously represented Baldwin in the Nassau County Legislature and was a member of the Baldwin Board of Education.

Melanie Martinez: Singer/songwriter Melanie Martinez’s family moved to Baldwin at age 4. Growing up, she listened to almost everything, from The Beatles to Shakira. She began singing in elementary school, which eventually led her to appear on “The Voice,” a singing competition show. She was eliminated in the fifth week of the show’s third season. After that, she began releasing her own original music, and her debut album “Cry Baby” went platinum.

Rob Weiss: Director of “Entourage” Rob Weiss was born in Baldwin and later moved to Lawrence with his father. He wrote several episodes of “Entourage,” and was the inspiration for one of the characters. He also wrote and produced the Entourage movie and the show “Ballers” with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Jeff Rosenstock: Guitarist and vocalist Jeff Rosenstock was born in Baldwin. He was the lead singer of several punk bands, including Bomb the Music Industry! He then went solo, achieving success as an independent artist. He founded Quote Unquote Records, an independent label that releases all of its music for free. He composes the music for the Cartoon Network show “Craig of the Week.”

Moneta Sleet Jr.: Pulitzer-winning photographer Moneta Sleet Jr. grew up and went to school in Kentucky until he received his master’s degree in Journalism at New York University in 1947. He earned the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography, becoming the first African-American to do so, for his photo of Coretta Scott King and her daughter Bernice at Martin Luther King Jr.’s funeral. Later in life, he moved to Baldwin, where he died in 1996.

Chris Weidman: Mixed martial arts champion Chris Weidman was born and raised in Baldwin, wrestling since he was a young boy. In high school, he became a Nassau County and New York state champion. He earned similar accolades at Nassau County Community College and Hofstra, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology. He made his UFC debut in 2011 and became the middleweight champion two years later. As of July 2018, he was ranked No. 3 in the official UFC middleweight rankings.
Bob Sheppard: Legendary baseball announcer Bob Sheppard grew up in Brooklyn, where he was exposed to many sports. He earned an athletic scholarship to St. John’s University, where he played baseball and football. He also earned a speech education degree from Columbia University. He announced his first Yankee game in 1951 and announced games there for 50 years, becoming known as the “Voice of the Yankees.” Sheppard lived in Baldwin in his later years until he died at age 99, nine days short of his 100th birthday.

Culture Jam tapped pre-Covid fun Chamber aimed to boost economy and community
O
n Sunday, June 27, Baldwin’s first annual Culture Jam lured Baldwinites and their friends and family out of the Covid quarantine blues and into a sunny summer with a variety of entertainment, food, and drink in order to revitalize community and business alike. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and The Irish Pub, this all-day event held at the parking lot of The Irish Pub had vendors put up tables to promote their businesses, as the chamber centered the “Get Back to Business” theme. The event began with a Car Show from 8 a.m. to noon hosted by the Baldwin Hot Rod Association. Paul Lizio, one of the heads of this association stated, “We felt that adding the cars to the event would be a good way to draw people outside and get together now that we are coming out of the pandemic.” From noon to 7 p.m. a live mural painting followed, which was curated by street artist and Baldwin High School graduate Poor Rupert. Artists showed off their chops with colorful renderings as the public watched and engaged with them, especially younger Baldwinites. Poor Rupert said that his hope for this event is to create awareness around this type of artistry, “Street art and muralism brings more positive things to a community than any of the other negative things that people may have in their heads about graffiti-type art.” Chamber of Commerce President Erik Mahler said that they wanted to do this event “to attract young people into Baldwin, to visit and shop in Restaurant Row and downtown Baldwin. It is vital to keep the young people interested in our wonderful community.” Along with live music, Baldwinites also enjoyed a cornhole tournament and raffles for hundreds of dollars in gift cards to The Irish Pub and Charlie’s Butcher and a new smoker to kick off some
summer outdoor grilling and drinking. The owner of The Irish Pub Shawn Sabel said, “The whole reason why we are doing this is to show how diverse how this community is. We have Jamaican, Irish, and Mexican cooks, and Reggae and Rock Long Island bands.” A portion of these donations will benefit Hangout One Happy Place, a Baldwin-based nonprofit organization that gives teenagers and young adults with special needs a space to socialize and safely engage in activities. T
he Baldwin Union Free School District has roughly 5,500 students in grades kindergarten to 12, from almost all areas of Baldwin as well as some parts of Freeport, Rockville Centre and South Hempstead. In the upcoming school year, the district has returned to in-person education with a universal mask mandate and CDC distancing protocols as the Delta variant has emerged and Covid cases have been spiking in Baldwin and Long Island overall. Despite the pandemic, Baldwin High School was ranked in top 25 percent in the state and top 21 percent in the nation by U.S. News & World report--jumping 60 places in the state rankings from the previous year. The school board consists of five elected members who serve threeyear terms without pay and act as the community’s representatives to the district. Board elections and budget votes are held each May. Additionally, the board is responsible for the district’s annual operating budget. The board meets on the first Wednesday of each month. Baldwin Farmers’ Market takes aim at food insecurity By Cristina Arroyo Rodriguez With a two-pronged mission of empowering youth and reducing food insecurity on Long Island, the Baldwin Farmers Market reopened last Saturday at the Long Island Rail Road station, and is scheduled to run every Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. until Oct. 30. Run by the Cedarmore Corporation, a Freeport-based non-profit organization that aims to “improve the educational, social and emotional development of youth representing the diverse population of families from the New York metropolitan area,” the market was managed by young people. Denise Jones-Smith, the acting director, emphasized how these projects impact those young people. “Being successful is definitely helping the youth,” she said. “Teaching them all about horticulture, teaching them about fresh fruits, how they can use the fruits for different recipes, and learn how to grow their own.” Nana Appiah-Agyemang, 21, began working at the farmers market last year. He said that this was above all a learning opportunity, “Success is showing young people more adversity when they’re younger, so when they become older they’re more inclined to succeed. Fail first to succeed later.” Nana highly recommended the apple cider donuts and peaches. Adisa Johnson, 19, started working at the farmers market about five years ago. He is currently the manager, and picks up the produce from two or three farms out East at 5 a.m. “I’d just like to get more people in here,” Johnson said. “Areas like this are a food desert, so I’d like to get healthy fruit to the community.” Sheila Lyle, a board member, volunteer and satisfied customer, agreed. “Vegetables are very, very fresh — the fruit is fresher than you can find in the grocery store,” she said. “We want to alleviate or erase the food deserts in the community.” According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, most of the food deserts on Long Island are in Suffolk County. but areas of Glen Cove, Freeport, Hempstead, Long Beach, Roosevelt and Uniondale have more than 67,500 people with
limited vehicle accessibility who live more than a half mile from the nearest supermarket. As of 2019, 33 percent of the population above Merrick Road and below Atlantic Avenue in Baldwin were more than half a mile from the nearest supermarket, and In North Baldwin, about 6 percent of households had no access to vehicles to drive to the nearest supermarket. Even though the pandemic further exacerbated food insecurity, according to Nassau Comptroller’s 2020 report, this summer Key Food’s SuperFresh supermarket opened in North Baldwin, occupying the former Pathmark location, which closed in 2015 and has remained unoccupied. Jones-Smith discussed how Cedarmore still ran the farmers market last year during Covid — they implemented a drive-by format, in which residents could select the produce from a menu and volunteers would deliver directly to their vehicles. This year’s market is presented in partnership with the New York State FreshConnect Program, Sanitary District No. 2, Nassau County’s Department of Human Services, Office of Youth Services and the HempsteadWorks Career Center, with special thanks to Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Christopher Carini, and County Legislators Debra Mulé and Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams for their support. “After adapting last summer to meet the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are delighted to once again offer the full farmers market experience that patrons look forward to each weekend,” Abrahams said. Mount Sinai South Nassau continues to serve community, breaks new ground By Mike Smollins When faced with an “unprecedented” situation in April 2020 as coronavirus numbers reached their peak, 383, the staff at Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital rose to the occasion and banded together to get through the difficult time. Now, staff is gearing up to continue the fight against the Delta variant. While many lives were lost to the coronavirus, the hospital celebrated the release of hundreds of Covid-19 positive patients who were released with a clean bill of health. At a time when front-line workers were stretched thin, the Oceanside community and many others came together to show their support, donating food to the hospital’s staff daily throughout the pandemic. With Covid-19 cases back on the rise and new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance announced on July 27, local hospitals are in full preparation mode. Dr. Adhi Sharma, chief medical officer at MSSN, recently discussed how people can protect themselves and their loved ones from the variant. Sharma said that Mount Sinai has seen an increase over the last week in their Covid patient census. Where the hospital saw one to two cases a day in June, they saw eight between July 29 and 30. Those new cases among patients have universally been seen in unvaccinated individuals. “The challenge with Delta is that it is extremely transmissible,” Sharma said. “Even vaccinated individuals are getting Delta and we are seeing that in our staff.” Sharma added that most of the cases the hospital has seen has come from travel. “We came out of the box, and we may have to go back in the box for a little bit,” he said. “That’s going to be challenging and I think we are going to see a lot of Covid cases as a result of that.” Before, during and after the surge of the pandemic, MSSN was committed to delivering standardsetting, patient-centered health care. It is one of the region’s largest hospitals, with 455 beds, more than 900 physicians and 3,000 employees. The hospital is an acute-care, not-for-profit teaching hospital that provides state-of-the-art care in cardiac, cancer, orthopedic, bariatric, pain management, mental health and emergency services. It is a designated Stroke Center, boasts Long Island’s first and only Gamma Knife® and Novalis Tx™ radiosurgery technologies for superior cancer care,
expert orthopedic services, and emergency and elective angioplasty. MSSN has been designated as an Accredited Bariatric Surgery Center by MBSAQIP and is also a recipient of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s “Get With The Guidelines®”-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite. MSSN’s beautiful North Addition houses two 36bed medical surgical units, a 36-bed inpatient behavioral health unit and comprehensive maternity services center with 26 private postpartum rooms, spacious labor and delivery rooms and a neonatal intensive care unit. The hospital’s Emergency Services department is one of the largest and most advanced on Nassau County’s South Shore. Designated a regional stroke center and Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons, the department houses 35 treatment rooms and specialty care, including a high-speed CT-scan and x-ray facility, pediatric emergency room and psychiatric emergency room. MSSN is the only hospital on Nassau’s South Shore permitted to perform angioplasty in an emergency or an elective basis. In the event you or a loved one need angioplasty, it can be performed on the spot at the hospital’s Center for Cardiovascular Health, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And services are expanding, as on June 22, MSSN celebrated the groundbreaking for its J-Wing on its Oceanside campus. The wing will serve as the cornerstone of hospital’s $400 million capital expansion to increase health-care services. Projected to open in 2023, the $130 million J-Wing will stand at four stories and 100,000 square feet. The chairman of Mount Sinai’s board of directors, Joe Fennessy, said the board re-evaluated old plans for the facility, updating the infrastructure to match the evolving trends in health care. “We began to reimagine what this hospital should be, and we realized to best serve the needs of our community, we had to be something different,” he said. Nassau County is governed by an elected Legislature, which is comprised of members from 19 districts. It includes an independent budget director who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters. Residents may submit petitions for proposed laws that legislators must consider. Legislators serve two-year terms. The county executive — currently Democrat Laura Curran — serves a four-year term and is the chief administrator. Town of Hempstead
The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Don Clavin — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a twoyear term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
