The coronavirus crisis that erupted in March and carries on to this day in New York shook all of us to our core. Baldwin, however, remains strong. It is a community full of fighters. Superstorm Sandy and Tropical Storm Isaias, which ravaged the the area, proved that. The storms pummeled our shores, but they never defeated our indomitable spirit to survive and thrive. Just as we saw in Sandy's wake, neighbors have helped neighbors through the Covid-19 Stuart crisis and Isaias, delivering food and medical Richner supplies to vulnerable residents, providing meals for the jobless and just checking in on one another. Thankfully, as of this writing in mid-September, the coronavirus infection rate had dropped to about 1 percent in New York. Let us hope and pray it remains at or falls below that level so people stay safe, and we can continue Baldwin's successful reopening of the economy and our schools. That will depend on all of us doing our parts — wearing our facial covers, maintaining social distance — not only today and tomorrow, but also likely for months to come. Throughout the crisis, the Baldwin Herald continued to provide invaluable news to the community, incuding information on institution closings, new safety protocols and, unfortunately, remembrances of lives lost. I want to thank our journalists for their commitment to the Baldwin community. Our staff, categorized as essential workers by Governor Cuomo, were out in the field regularly, even during the height of the pandemic, to ensure people who work and live in Baldwin had access to the best and most up-to-date information. Additionally, Richner Communications, the parent company of the Baldwin Herald, was proud to provide $500,000 in small business marketing grants to entrepreneurs across the South Shore, including many in the area. We know small businesses are the lifeblood of any community — especially in Baldwin — so we are hopeful these funds will help your favorite stores and restaurants get back on their feet. In this edition of our annual community guide, we look at all that is wonderful about Baldwin, at the same time that we examine what has changed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Living In Baldwin is a special publication of the Baldwin Herald, the community's hometown newspaper. Living In is published in cooperation with the Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, and we are honored to mark another year as its official publication. We hope you find this issue of Living In Baldwin useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the Baldwin Herald 52 weeks a year.

ong Island is home to 173 hamlets, 37 of which are in the Town of Hempstead. Baldwin may seem like one of many when looking at sheer numbers, but the close-knit nature of the community is what separates Baldwin from its counterparts. Driving west on Sunrise Highway brings residents of neighboring communities from Freeport to Rockville Centre before they even notice the Long Island Rail Road station, built in 1868 tucked, alongside the highway. A quick turn north onto Grand Avenue reveals Wick’s Florist, Fruitera and Greenhouse, a family operation that has beautified Baldwin since 1927. Heading farther north brings travelers to the Baldwin Historical Museum, which has dedicated nearly 50 years to preserving the history of Baldwin while encouraging and engaging the community. Driving up Grand Avenue, expect to be met with school buses transporting students to and from Baldwin High School, which educates thousands of students every year. In March, the original expectations of students, teachers, faculty members and families for the 2019-2020 school year were uprooted when the Covid-19 pandemic escalated and classes shifted online. The Baldwin School District adapted to this new platform and method of learning to best continue their students’ education. The Baldwin community quickly got involved and provided support through many community, volunteer and individual initiatives. The Milburn Creek borders the majority of the eastern side of Baldwin and shares the Milburn Creek Park with Freeport. An area rich with history now serves as a place for Baldwin residents and surrounding community members to relax by the Milburn Pond. For half of 2020, park goers maintained social distancing and followed state health guidelines during the Covid-19 pandemic in an effort to appreciate the flora and fauna Baldwin has to offer. Baldwin may not be the epicenter of attention, but the people who live here can attest that the community is strong and continually growing. Between volunteer opportunities and various hamlet happenings, Baldwin is a supportive community to call home.

A new kind of Baldwin Day

Drive-in movie night replaces annual tradition

B

aldwin Day looked a little different this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic. To replace the traditional picnic and fireworks show in Baldwin Harbor Town Park, Baldwin Chamber of Commerce members sponsored a drive-in movie night in conjunction with the Town of Hempstead. More than 200 cars filled the lot near the skate park on Aug. 25, when people of all ages joined to watch the Disney film “Onward.” Moviegoers remained in their cars to practice social distancing. On Baldwin Day in previous years, the park was filled with thousands of residents of Baldwin and neighboring communities, who set up their lawn chairs and socialized, shopped at vendors, ate hot dogs and hamburgers, and took in to a musical performance before the grand finale fireworks show. The fireworks show started in 2009 and made Baldwin one of the few non-villages in Nassau County to host such a show. “Unfortunately we were unable to do Baldwin Day this year on the 25th anniversary,” Baldwin Chamber of Commerce President Erik Mahler said before the event, “and instead we will be doing the drive-in movie, flashing chamber and nonchamber businesses on the screen to let the public know to save your neighbor’s job and shop local, especially now since businesses are starving.” The free film showing was part of the town’s Drive-In Movie Series, featuring 16 classic films that began on July 6. The program is presented in conjunction with the Long Island Motion Picture Arts Center & Museum, Outdoor Movies by ISH Events and Movies in the Moonlight. The movie began a little after sunset, and instructions were provided on how to tune your car radio station to hear the movie audio inside your vehicle. The town thanked Ridgewood Savings Bank and

Iavarone Bros. for sponsoring the Drive-In Movie Series, as well as media sponsors KJOY 98.3, WHLI 1100AM and 103.1 MAX FM. “Town of Hempstead residents have made great sacrifices over the past several months to help keep one another safe during the Covid-19 pandemic,” Supervisor Don Clavin said in a statement. “This Drive-In Movie Series, provided free to town residents, is our way of giving back to the community. Of course, we will still be enforcing social distancing and other restrictions to help protect moviegoers.” Bridget Downes/Herald

he Baldwin Union Free School District has roughly 5,500 students in grades kindergarten to 12, from almost all areas of Baldwin as well as some parts of Freeport, Rockville Centre and South Hempstead. The five elementary schools, one middle school for grades six, seven and eight, and one high school for grades nine to 12 made the transition challenging to full online learning in March because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The school district has taken the unforeseen obstacles and — through virtual classrooms, comprehensive learning packets and a supportive community — continued to educate its students. The school board consists of five elected members who serve threeyear terms without pay and act as the community’s representatives to the district. Board elections and budget votes are held each May. Additionally, the board is responsible for the district’s annual operating budget. The board meets on the first Wednesday of each month. Board meetings for the 2020-21 school year are updated on the Baldwin School District website at baldwinschools.org and are currently virtual.

Weathering an ‘unprecedented’ pandemic at MSSN By Mike Smollins

Guidelines®”-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite. MSSN’s beautiful North Addition houses two 36bed medical surgical units, a 36-bed inpatient behavioral health unit and comprehensive maternity services center with 26 private postpartum rooms, spacious labor and delivery rooms and a neonatal intensive care unit. The hospital’s Emergency Services department is one of the largest and most advanced on Nassau County’s South Shore. Designated a regional stroke center and Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons, the department houses 35 treatment rooms and specialty care, including a high-speed CT-scan and x-ray facility, pediatric emergency room and psychiatric emergency room. And that capacity will soon be expanding. MSSN is working on building a new four-story, 58,000-square-foot wing. The new wing will nearly double the size of the emergency room, add new and larger operating rooms, add more beds in the critical-care wing, and will also help prepare the hospital in case of another hurricane like Sandy or a surge in patients from a pandemic like it saw during the Covid-19 peak. MSSN is the only hospital on Nassau’s South Shore permitted to perform angioplasty in an emergency or an elective basis. In the event you or a loved one need angioplasty, it can be performed on the spot at the hospital’s Center for Cardiovascular Health, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The facility’s Cancer Center is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and has received the Outstanding Achievement Award for three consecutive survey cycles (2009, 2012, 2015). With leading-edge cancer fighting technologies, including Novalis Tx™ radiosurgery, daVinci robotic-assisted surgery, the Long Island Gamma Knife® and world-class physician talent specializing in cancer, MSSN offers South Shore residents expert cancer care without the need to travel to points north or into the city. For more information about MSSN and its services, call (877) 768-8462 or (516) 632-3000, or go to www.southnassau.org. We encourage you to “like” them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.

When faced with an “unprecedented” situation in April as coronavirus numbers reached their peak, 383, the staff at Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital rose to the occasion and banded together to get through the difficult time. “We are stretched beyond anything we have seen in the past,” spokesman Joe Calderone said at the time. “The situation here is unprecedented.” While many lives were lost to the coronavirus, the hospital celebrated the release of hundreds of Covid-19 positive patients who were released with a clean bill of health. At a time when front-line workers were stretched thin, the Oceanside community and many others came together to show their support, donating food to the hospital’s staff daily throughout the pandemic. In May, when cases began plummeting, the hospital returned to offering elective surgeries as the hospital began a “Don’t Put Your Health on Hold” initiative, urging the community not to risk safety out of fear of coming to a hospital. “If you’re out there and you have a procedure that you’ve been putting off, or if you have any kind of medical issue, you should call immediately,” Calderone said. “Don’t wait.” In June, most units of the hospital returned to welcoming visitors under strict guidelines, including one visitor per day per patient, and a shift from a 24 hours per day visitor policy to a four-hour window. Additionally, all visitors must undergo a Covid-19 test no more than two days before visiting. Before, during and after the surge of the pandemic, MSSN was committed to delivering standardsetting, patient-centered health care. It is one of the region’s largest hospitals, with 455 beds, more than 900 physicians and 3,000 employees. The hospital is an acute-care, not-for-profit teaching hospital that provides state-of-the-art care in cardiac, cancer, orthopedic, bariatric, pain management, mental health and emergency services. It is a designated Stroke Center, boasts Long Island’s first and only Gamma Knife® and Novalis Tx™ radiosurgery technologies for superior cancer care, expert orthopedic services, and emergency and elective angioplasty. MSSN has been designated as Christina Daly/Herald an Accredited Bariatric Surgery Center by MBSAQIP Front-line workers at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital in Oceanside came and is also a recipient of the American Heart Asso- outside to greet hundreds of cars that drove by in a parade to support them ciation/American Stroke Association’s “Get With The during the battle against the coronavirus in April.

Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles, with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Donald Clavin — and a six-member Town Council. The council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
