The coronavirus crisis that erupted in March and carries on to this day in New York shook all of us to our core. The Five Towns, however, remain strong. It is a community full of fighters. Superstorm Sandy and now Tropical Storm Isaias, which ravaged the the area, proved that. The storms pummeled our shores, but they never defeated our indomitable spirit to survive and thrive. Just as we saw in Sandy's wake, neighbors are Stuart now helping neighbors through the Covid-19 crisis Richner and Isaias, delivering food and medical supplies to vulnerable residents, providing meals for the jobless and just checking in on one another. Thankfully, as of this writing in late August, the coronavirus infection rate had dropped to about 1 percent in New York. Let us hope and pray it remains at or falls below that level so people stay safe, and we can continue the Five Towns' successful reopening of the economy and soon begin reopening our schools. That will depend on all of us doing our parts — wearing our facial covers, maintaining social distance — not only today and tomorrow, but also likely for months to come. Throughout the crisis, the Nassau Herald continued to provide invaluable news to the community, incuding information on institution closings, new safety protocols and, unfortunately, remembrances of lives lost. I want to thank our journalists for their commitment to the Five Towns community. Our staff, categorized as essential workers by Governor Cuomo, were out in the field regularly, even during the height of the pandemic, to ensure people who work and live in Rockville Centre had access to the best and most up-to-date information. Additionally, Richner Communications, the parent company of the Nassau Herald, was proud to provide $500,000 in small business marketing grants to entrepreneurs across the South Shore, including many in the area. We know small businesses are the lifeblood of any community — especially the Five Towns — so we are hopeful these funds will help your favorite stores and restaurants get back on their feet. In this edition of our annual community guide, we look at all that is wonderful about the Five Towns, at the same time that we examine what has changed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Living In the Five Towns is a special publication of the Nassau Herald, the community's hometown newspaper. Living In is published in cooperation with the Cedarhurst Bid and Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association, and we are honored to mark another year as their official publication. We hope you find this issue of Living In the Five Towns useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the Nassau Herald 52 weeks a year.

cross the Five Towns, living has changed dramatically in the past several months, from schools and businesses closing in March to the four-phase reopening of the economy that continues. For the uninitiated, the Five Towns are Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Inwood, Lawrence and Woodmere. The area also includes Atlantic Beach, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck, Meadowmere Park, North Woodmere and Woodsburgh. School buildings shut down, which caused disruption to the school year and compelled districts and private schools to transform rapidly from in-person instruction to remote learning, a combination of which will be used as the new school year unfolds. Instead of the usual late winter, spring and summer events that are synonymous with living in the Five Towns, there were collections and donations of facemasks, gloves and hand sanitizer, along with organizations helping to feed essential workers and those in need after many lost their jobs. The Five Towns Community Center in Lawrence is now a beehive of activity, from Gammy’s Pantry, run by Inwood resident Sasha Young, offering food, clothes and other items for free, to the pantry becoming a Long Island Cares site that also provides free food. In Hewlett, Blair Longaro organized Feeding Local Heroes and Friends, which had ordinary people ordering food from restaurants that was then delivered to hospital workers, police officers, firefighters and pharmacists. The Marion & Aaron Gural JCC partnered with ComContinued on next page

munity Chest South Shore and Gabriel Boxer, the Kosher Guru, and many other sponsors to distribute free fresh food and produce community-wide. The Gural JCC also distributes or delivers food to those in need through its Rina Shkolnik Kosher Food Pantry. Lawrence-based Achiezer remains at the forefront of assisting the Five Towns with Covid-19-related issues. The community resource center, founded and run by Rabbi Boruch Bender, helped bring a temporary outpatient center to Sh’or Yoshuv Institute in Lawrence at the height of the pandemic. Stalwart charitable organizations such as the Kiwanis of the Five Towns and Peninsula Kiwanis continued their history of giving by collecting personal protective equipment such as face masks, gloves and gowns, and donating the items to hospitals and the police. Five Towns Kiwanis helped to bring food to seniors in need. It was never easy or easygoing. At the beginning of the pandemic, there were many instances of people across the Five Towns not disposing of the protective gloves properly and just throwing them on the ground. Photographs of the trashed gloves appeared, public shaming arose on local Facebook pages, and it ceased to be a problem. Because people could not congregate together in large groups, celebrations such

as birthdays, retirements and school graduations took on a new appearance. Many on Long Island began organizing vehicle parades and driving by or parking at celebrants’ houses in the case of birthdays or retirements. Graduation parades took routes to drive by graduates’ homes, or in the case of Hewlett High School, the Homecoming parade route was used. Summer in the Five Towns was different as well. The annual Santa Marina Festival in Inwood was canceled. Beach clubs, village beaches and county- and town-run swimming pools needed to adhere to state guidelines for capacity and social distancing, while ensuring that people wore facemasks. Because not every day camp opened, and because only a few sleepaway camps opened, the campers and teenagers who usually spent hours or weeks away from home had to find other diversions. Older teens founded small businesses, such as Hewlett residents and twin brothers Caleb and Josh Goldstein, who created Five Towns Lifeguards and offered their skills to supervise children at backyard swimming pools. The pandemic remains, and at press time in late August, it was unclear how the remainder of the 2020 would look. Would the outdoor fall fairs be held? Would all the Christmas tree and Hanukkah menorah lightings take place? Living in the Five Towns has become different, but no less interesting.

A Message from the Hewlett-Woodmere

Business AssociATion Dear Residents:

T

he HewlettWoodmere Business Association was formed to bring together merchants and professionals conducting business in the hamlets of Hewlett and Woodmere, including North Woodmere, served by School District 14. Hewlett-Woodmere David Friedman Business Association members support programs throughout the school district, local organizations and civic associations. We aim to foster awareness from adjoining communities as to our merchandise, activities and services offered in the two villages. The HWBA plans to increase internet marketing through the use of our current website and a secondary site, ShopHewlettWoodmere.com. We enjoy the support of Town Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, County Legislator Howard Kopel, County Executive Laura Curran, Town Supervisor Donald Clavin, State Sen. Todd

Kaminsky and State Assembywoman Melissa Miller. It is these public officials and our residents who look to an active business association to make our community a more attractive place to reside. The HWBA has become an integral part of the community, and in the past, before the coronavirus pandemic, we held Christmas and Hanukkah celebrations, rebuilt the Veteran’s Memorial Plaza, organized the Memorial Day parade and sponsored Kids Night Out. Our award-winning school district, refurbished library and evolving shopping areas are what help to unite us as a vibrant community. We invite you to eat in our local restaurants, shop our boutiques and use our service businesses to help us remain a strong business hub.

Five Towns Schools

hether it is the Hewlett-Woodmere and Lawrence public school districts or the many yeshivas that dot the Five Towns, schools were in flux because of the coronavirus pandemic. Schools in regions that are in Phase 4 of New York state’s reopening protocols can be open if they have a daily average Covid-19 infection rate of 5 percent or lower over a 14-day period. Schools in a region that sees a spike in infections — a seven-day average rate of 9 percent or higher — cannot reopen. More than likely, all schools, private or public, are using a combination of in-person instruction and remote learning, while trying to balance academic rigor with maintaining everyone’s health and safety. Three reopening plans had to be submitted to the State Education Department. One was for inperson instruction, a second for remote learning and a third for a combination. Through the summer, school officials spent their time “reading and interpreting the vast amount of guidance and information that has been flowing from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the New York State Education Department, the New York State Department of Health and the governor's office,” Dr. Ralph Marino Jr., superintendent of HewlettWoodmere, said. Hewlett-Woodmere formed a reopening task force that oversaw creation of its plans to reopen. Lawrence added members to its Health and Safety Committee and the yeshiva administrators worked within their schools. “Our focus moving forward will be to put our plan into action and reopen our schools with the health, safety, and well-being of our entire community as paramount,” Marino said. T

he Covid-19 pandemic has caused many businesses to collapse, many people to lose their jobs, and practically everyone’s lives to be upended. Amid it all, libraries have often been overlooked. Yet, they have been working diligently to safely satisfy their patrons’ needs. During the lockdown, the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library moved to complete virtual services. William Ferro, the director, said, “Our eBook circulation went up over 300 percent and … the library added streaming services … which allowed patrons to view movies from home.” In Phase One, libraries offered contactless book pick-ups. HewlettWoodmere and the Peninsula Public Library have been able to distribute books to patrons who order online, receiving them by curbside pickup. At press time, the directors were looking closely at the infection numbers to see when they will be able to reopen for in-person services, with precautions. Carolynn Matulewicz, the PPL director, said, “It’s not looking like anything will be normal for a while, but we are trying to serve our community in the safest way possible for them and our staff.” The Levi Yitzchak Library Center, in Cedarhurst, has continued with its “A Little Curious” program over Zoom. Weathering an ‘unprecedented’ pandemic at MSSN By Mike Smollins

Guidelines®”-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite. MSSN’s beautiful North Addition houses two 36bed medical surgical units, a 36-bed inpatient behavioral health unit and comprehensive maternity services center with 26 private postpartum rooms, spacious labor and delivery rooms and a neonatal intensive care unit. The hospital’s Emergency Services department is one of the largest and most advanced on Nassau County’s South Shore. Designated a regional stroke center and Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons, the department houses 35 treatment rooms and specialty care, including a high-speed CT-scan and x-ray facility, pediatric emergency room and psychiatric emergency room. And that capacity will soon be expanding. MSSN is working on building a new four-story, 58,000-square-foot wing. The new wing will nearly double the size of the emergency room, add new and larger operating rooms, add more beds in the critical-care wing, and will also help prepare the hospital in case of another hurricane like Sandy or a surge in patients from a pandemic like it saw during the Covid-19 peak. MSSN is the only hospital on Nassau’s South Shore permitted to perform angioplasty in an emergency or an elective basis. In the event you or a loved one need angioplasty, it can be performed on the spot at the hospital’s Center for Cardiovascular Health, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The facility’s Cancer Center is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and has received the Outstanding Achievement Award for three consecutive survey cycles (2009, 2012, 2015). With leading-edge cancer fighting technologies, including Novalis Tx™ radiosurgery, daVinci robotic-assisted surgery, the Long Island Gamma Knife® and world-class physician talent specializing in cancer, MSSN offers South Shore residents expert cancer care without the need to travel to points north or into the city. For more information about MSSN and its services, call (877) 768-8462 or (516) 632-3000, or go to www.southnassau.org. We encourage you to “like” them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.

When faced with an “unprecedented” situation in April as coronavirus numbers reached their peak, 383, the staff at Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital rose to the occasion and banded together to get through the difficult time. “We are stretched beyond anything we have seen in the past,” spokesman Joe Calderone said at the time. “The situation here is unprecedented.” While many lives were lost to the coronavirus, the hospital celebrated the release of hundreds of Covid-19 positive patients who were released with a clean bill of health. At a time when front-line workers were stretched thin, the Oceanside community and many others came together to show their support, donating food to the hospital’s staff daily throughout the pandemic. In May, when cases began plummeting, the hospital returned to offering elective surgeries as the hospital began a “Don’t Put Your Health on Hold” initiative, urging the community not to risk safety out of fear of coming to a hospital. “If you’re out there and you have a procedure that you’ve been putting off, or if you have any kind of medical issue, you should call immediately,” Calderone said. “Don’t wait.” In June, most units of the hospital returned to welcoming visitors under strict guidelines, including one visitor per day per patient, and a shift from a 24 hours per day visitor policy to a four-hour window. Additionally, all visitors must undergo a Covid-19 test no more than two days before visiting. Before, during and after the surge of the pandemic, MSSN was committed to delivering standardsetting, patient-centered health care. It is one of the region’s largest hospitals, with 455 beds, more than 900 physicians and 3,000 employees. The hospital is an acute-care, not-for-profit teaching hospital that provides state-of-the-art care in cardiac, cancer, orthopedic, bariatric, pain management, mental health and emergency services. It is a designated Stroke Center, boasts Long Island’s first and only Gamma Knife® and Novalis Tx™ radiosurgery technologies for superior cancer care, expert orthopedic services, and emergency and elective angioplasty. MSSN has been designated as Christina Daly/Herald an Accredited Bariatric Surgery Center by MBSAQIP Front-line workers at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital in Oceanside came and is also a recipient of the American Heart Asso- outside to greet hundreds of cars that drove by in a parade to support them ciation/American Stroke Association’s “Get With The during the battle against the coronavirus in April.

Emergency Responders

he coronavirus pandemic has forced firstresponder units in the Five Towns and the Nassau County Police Department to update emergency procedures and medical services to protect residents and staff. Police officers and first responders have been wearing additional protective equipment since the pandemic was declared to help ensure safety. Lt. Richard Lebrun, commanding officer of Nassau Public Information said response time due to extra safety precautions has not increased. If an arrest is made in close contact, an N95 mask will be administered to the individual being arrested, he said. Hewlett Fire Department Chief Jaime Lewin said every emergency call to a house is treated as if there is a case of Covid-19. Before arriving at the scene, Lewin said responders ask a variety of questions to determine if there is a case. Responders ask if you have been in contact with the virus, on a plane, etc. If calling to report an emergency and someone in the home has tested positive for Covid-19, inform the responders before they arrive and safely keep a distance from the home. “You can never be too safe,” he said. To ensure staff and residents are at less risk for infection, Inwood Fire Chief Anthony Rivelli Jr.

said they do not have different crews going to calls every day. This is to limit exposure to different people, and hopefully lessening the risk of infection to the entire department. Atlantic Beach Rescue said they also treat calls as if the patient has coronavirus with the attending responder wearing all the PPE, Chief Avi Golan previously said, adding the new protocols added to response time but members have adjusted. Lewin said three or four times a week all fire department tools and equipment are disinfected; everybody wears masks and meetings are held applying the mandated six-feet of space between people. “We have had minimal issues, but everyone’s safety is very important to us,” he said.

Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles, with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Donald Clavin — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. WE WERE HERE FOR YOU BEFORE COVID AND WE’RE HERE FOR YOU NOW.

Don’t put off seeking medical care, including elective surgery, in fear of COVID-19. Mount Sinai South Nassau has dedicated non-COVID patient care areas, including within our Emergency Department. All units have undergone a deep cleaning to ensure your safety. All patients undergoing procedures are tested for COVID-19 within five days prior to admission. Our frontline staff of physicians, nurses and support personnel are equipped with full Personal Protective Equipment to help halt the spread of infectious diseases. Your health shouldn’t be defined by COVID-19.

DON’T PUT YOUR HEALTH ON HOLD. COME WITH CONFIDENCE.

To find a physician please call: 516-632-3936 or use our physician search tool at mountsinai.org/southnassau
