It all began with Long Islanders nominating their favorite businesses, practices, services and people who make Long Island the place to be and thrive in their respective categories on LIChoiceAwards.com. Thanks to the communities’ constant love and support, the businesses with the most nominations moved on to make the Top 5. These businesses surpass customers and client’s expectations and are passionate about their work.

The Top 5 nominees in each of the individual categories (based on the total number of nominations received during the Nominations Round) have been placed on the official Herald Long Island Choice Awards ballot for the Voting Round. In this round, members of the public are invited to visit LIChoiceAwards.com, where they will find the ballot and all the contenders in each category. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, they account for about 44% of our national economic activity. Locally, on Long Island, they are our economic backbone. Roughly 90% of the businesses here are small or medium-sized. Supporting small businesses means keeping our local commercial districts thriving, which optimizes electric usage in our communities.

PSEG Long Island has been supporting small businesses since 2018 with economic development grants and other incentives that keep local commercial districts thriving.

In one recent case, PSEG Long Island helped Long Island Sports Zone, which has been providing some of the best baseball and softball training around since 2009, achieve major league energy savings at their Bohemia facility.

A visit from one of our Business Customer Advocates led owners Randy Caden and his son Tim to our Commercial Efficiency Program. It was no small task to reduce overhead costs at a 6,300 square foot facility with no natural light.

The Cadens worked with one of our Prime Efficiency Partners to replace existing light fixtures with energysaving LED lighting. A rebate of nearly $2,500 cut the upgrade costs by more than half. When the pandemic struck, small businesses faced their greatest challenge in at least a decade amid diminished foot traffic and new safety measures. Rising to the moment, PSEG Long Island increased our small business support efforts

with targeted grants, supporting local chambers of commerce and business improvement districts in their efforts to provide outdoor seating and signage to create a safe shopping and dining experience for their customers.

In the past four years PSEG Long Island has committed more than $2 million to economic development grants and incentives across Long Island and the Rockaways.

You can see the results of our economic development grants in communities all across Nassau

County: thriving small businesses like Rosario’s Pizzeria, founded in Brooklyn in 1980 and now proudly operating in Seaford; K-Fit Studio, a boutique gym in Valley Stream, Noble Savage Brewing in Glen Cove, which offers small-batch beers made with New York-grown grains; and Bright Eye Beer Company, Long Beach’s first craft brewery.

More than 100 businesses have received limited-time “vacant space” discounts for opening up in previously empty storefronts in their communities. Some businesses

received Main Street Revitalization grants for making major upgrades that increase foot traffic in their commercial districts. And many businesses have received a muchneeded bump from the outdoor dining and shopping improvements made possible by the dozens of grants we have provided to local chambers of commerce. All of these grants help optimize the use of the energy grid in these commercial districts.

We have also provided beautification grants of up to $2,000 to many local chambers of commerce to enhance the visual appeal of shopping districts, and you can already see the results all across Nassau County. The Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District used their grant money to string lights throughout the town to make it more feasible for patrons to walk around the downtown area in the evening, especially on the nights they close off the downtown and have music and dining in the street. The Baldwin Chamber of Commerce used their grant for a “Welcome to Baldwin” sign.  The East Meadow Chamber of Commerce used their grant money to purchase American flags to line their business district.
