publisher The past two years have been tough for Long Beach, but the always-resourceful people on the barrier island came through once again, just as we did after Sandy and other crises that have swept through the city. The Long Beach police and firefighters were always on the ready to help anyone who was sick, needed an ambulance or help at home.

Grocery stores and other necessary retailers stepped up during this challenging time, their employees working long shifts under difficult conditions. And we can never thank

Neighbors helping neighbors. That’s what Long Beach is all about. And what it continues to be. We looked out for each other all through the Covid-19 crisis. Now as the pandemic shifts to endemic and restrictions have been loosened, Long Beach is reinvigorated and re-energized. The movie theater on Park Avenue, closed since Covid began its ugly spread, has finally reopened.

Restaurants are doing a brisk business. And the boardwalk, as always, is lively.

Throughout the pandemic, the Long Beach Herald has remained steadfast in informing everyone of new cases, hospitalizations, and also all of the great things individuals, stores, police, firefighters, school, and community leaders were doing to keep the city moving. Herald reporters were at meetings, and talking to you and your neighbors to paint a portrait of a city that may struggle at times, but one that also is winning.

Richner Communications, which owns the Herald, was proud to do its part, too. Richner offered thousands of businesses marketing grants so that the merchants — the lifeblood of the city — could carry on.

Now we are turning the corner, with vaccines and medical advances in our arsenal. Thankfully, eight out of every 10 people in Nassau County are fully vaccinated.

As Long Beach moves forward, it's planning a huge celebration this summer for its centennial. And, along with you, the Herald will be there. Our reporters and photographers will cover all the major — and minor — events as the entire community rejoices and honors a city that has always proven so strong.

The Chamber works for you

he Long Beach Chamber of Commerce wishes you all a Happy Spring as we embark on another Beach Season. Coming out of the pandemic is fabulous news but we cannot overlook the toll it has taken on our businesses and our community as a whole. Our businesses have labored through the winter and are steaming towards a prosperous summer. We have all had to pivot in our business and family lives to maintain some sense of normality. Life was no different at the Chamber and pivot we did as well to see how best to serve our Business Community and to help navigate the unknowns.

Working closely with the City Administration we pinpointed areas that would help our restaurants with seating capacity and getting creative with outdoor seating. Also creating parking areas in our Business Districts for curbside pick-up and drop-off for our Retail Establishments. As you all know, a strong Business District helps to keep our taxes stable and that is exactly what is needed now.

With things ever evolving in our City by the Sea, there are many bright spots to acknowledge. First is the Superblock. We all know what is happening over there, after all we have been talking about it for 30 years and now it rises out of the ground.

This project will bring great investment to our Business Community and a fair share of spending capital. Next up is our Road Reconstruction on the Boulevards connecting the LIRR and the Beach. And various other projects to increase the quality of life.

The Chamber is proud to see everyone back on their feet and looking forward to a beautiful Summer. We are fortunate that our membership is skyrocketing and that people, and I mean the entire Community, are represented so that all can enjoy the benefit when we work together and keep businesses strong. BreezY on the boardwalk

here are so many great things about the beach — the view of the gently bobbing waves in the morning, the fragrance of the salt air, and the warmth of the sand. But it is ultimately the breeze from the ocean that always draws people back to the boardwalk and its colorful cafes.

It‘s the sea breeze and the hot croissants, sizzling burgers, malts and milk shakes and candy-colored ice cream cones offered from the sizzling grills and counters.

Long Beach residents and visitors from elsewhere flock to the popular eateries on the boardwalk — Riptides, Marvel and Beach Burger. These spots jut out from the boardwalk like a surprise gift to the hungry, the thirsty, or to those who just want a break from a stroll, a jog or a bike ride.

“I love it,” said Kate Schuecherl, out on a springy mid-April morning with her two children, Evie, 6, and Ben, 4, promising them breakfast at Riptides. “It’s the vibes,” the Rockville Centre mom said, explaining why she visits so often.

“It’s relaxing. It’s eating. There are no complaints.”

city council member Kevin Braddish, opened Riptides about seven years ago, hoping to draw in longtime Long Beach residents and sun worshipers from across Nassau and Queens. He has been successful. His seasonal outlet, shaped like a box with an indoor porch, draws hundreds on weekends and an SRO crowd on summer holidays.

“It’s a great place for local people,” said Braddish. “There’s music, food, a friendly staff.

There’s always a lot of moms and kids.”

Riptides, Marvel and Beach Burger draw people in. They are meeting spots for retirees, a place to play a hand or two of cards, a way station to a more serious destination, like a meeting, but maybe most of all, a respite from the worries of everyday life.

“Everyone comes to these places,” said, Perri Taxin of Long Beach, a teacher in the East Meadow school district who, like others in her profession, was gearing up for a long week off just before Good Friday and Passover. Riptides, Marvel and Beach Burger would be her summer hangouts, Taxin said.

“This is a local breakfast spot,” Guenego said. “I raised my family here. I always meet friends here. You can’t get over the view, of the breeze. It keeps you coming back.”

T.K. Chiu, a golf instructor, was enjoying breakfast with his friend, Joyce Chau, a womens’ clothing designer. They come every few weeks, from Levittown. The trip is worth it, Chiu said.

“It always reminds me of summer,” Chiu said.

Cindy Wenger of Woodmere brought her three daughters, just to sit on a bench outside Marvel, the ice cream store, and take in the atmosphere.

One of the them, Rebecca Wenger, 20, a student at SUNY Binghamton, said she began coming to the local joints three years ago, and has not stopped since, at least when she is in town.

“I love the food,” she said. “I love this whole place.”

his summer, the City of Long Beach will celebrate 100 years. As your City Manager and neighbor, it is a privilege to welcome you all to our Centennial Summer of 2022.

As I reflect on our city’s 100th Birthday -- our history and our future-- I amhumbled by the strength, resiliency, and togetherness of our community. It’s guided us through some very challenging times and it continues to propel us forward and inspire us all... for the next 100 years.

Recently, Time Out (Magazine) named the City of Long Beach the #1 Best East Coast Beach Town for a Summer Getaway. That’s certainly no surprise to our residents and visitors! Our city is where summer lives all year long. Our boardwalk and miles of beaches, our recreation center, summer ice skating, the best boutiques and businesses, great fishing, surfing, our fantastic farmers’ market, art shows, incredible restaurants, events, recreational programs and services for residents of all ages, and so much more. he beaches will be open for Long Beach residents this summer starting Memorial Day weekend. The beach park will be open as normal for residents and non-residents. Beach goers will not be required to follow all Covid guidlines from the past year while at the beach. People are still advised to take precautions when needed.

The prices of the beach passes will be increasing slightly this summer for all individuals.

Beach passes can usually be purchased at the Gazebo near the Children’s Park and Ice Arena on the Recreation Campus at Magnolia Boulevard. The Gazebo is expected be open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Special operating hours for seniors 62-plus will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-9 a.m.

Passes will also be sold at the Beach Trailer at the southwest corner of Laurelton Boulevard and West Broadway. The office will be open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The beach will begin daily operation from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 27. Until then it will operate on weekends only from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Don’t delay! Avoid the rush. Purchase your passes now before those sunny, warm days arrive!

New to this year, passes can also be purhcsed digitally and be used on moile devices to ener he beach. The passes can be purchased, for the same price, on the City's website. They can then be accessed and managed by downloading the Yodel app on smartphones and mobile devices.

Who is required to have a beach pass?

All those who have reached age 13 must have a beach pass to enter or remain on the beach on weekends from Saturday, May 29 (including Memorial Day) through the end of June and daily from till after Labor Day. The beach will temporarily be open to residents only, unless updated by the city officials.

Is there a family discount?

Yes. Family resident passes include two adult passes and for those children living in the LIVING IN LONG BEACH - 2022-2023

household between the ages of 13 and 17. Children 12 and under are free, and children 18 and older and considered adults. Proof of birth date must be presented at time of purchase. Children born after Sept. 6, 2008, will not need a beach pass in the summer of 2022 and those born before May 29, 2003, will need to purchase an adult pass.

What do I need to provide?

Residency: Those wishing to purchase season/ daily passes at the resident rate must have an address in the City of Long Beach. The following terms of proof are acceptable: driver’s license with Long Beach address, check or bill or lease with Long Beach address and picture ID. Child: A child pass will be issued when proof of age is presented via birth certificate or passport or some other acceptable form of identification.

Senior Citizen: Driver’s license or passport indicating birth date on or before May 29, 1960.

Access Pass: Documentation indicating physical disability.

Military Rate: U.S. Government ID indicating holder is a member or has been honorably discharged from a branch of the United States Armed Services. Only one pass sold per military ID. 2022 Season Rates (Subject to chance) Resident Individual (adults ages 18-61) $85 Resident Family (parents & children ages 13-17) $115 Resident Children (13-17 years old) $30 Resident Senior Citizens (62 and over) $30 Access Pass $30 Military(veteran) $30 Children’s birth certificates required with application. Surfer’s Way This Long Beach-based volunteer, non-profit organization, at 830 East Chester St., offers and encourages children with special needs opportunities to experience the thrill of surfing. It offers free surf outings in the summer at Riverside Beach, providing a fun, safe, monumental surfing experience for every child. Surf for all Surf For All is a non-for-profit volunteer charity organization based in Long Beach. It is dedicated to assisting individuals and having them get into the ocean in order for them to experience the joy of surfing as well as maximizing their full potential.

The group offers weekly lessons at no cost for all students ages 5 to 20 during the summer special education program.

The surfing program was founded in 2002 to develop a surf program for developmentally disabled teenagers. Over the years, Surf for All has expanded its outings to cover a broader spectrum of disabilities, including autism, cerebral palsy, global developmental delays, visual impairment and more. It also provides programs for the economically disadvantaged and lessons and support for military heroes and their families with the help from the Long Beach Waterfront Warriors.

Surfrider foundation Central Long island Chapter The Surfrider Foundation advocates for and supports the protection and enjoyment of the waves, oceans and beaches through its powerful activist networks and programs. The National Office of Surfrider Foundation makes great programs available to the chapters.Chapters are free to implement these programs to best fit the needs of their local areas. The local chapter regularly organizes beach, bay and canal cleanups and advocates for environmentally friendly causes.

Recent campaigns include a successful push for a ban on the intentional release of balloons; the launch of an ocean-friendly restaurants program and support for a law passed in 2017 limiting single-use plastic bags, among other efforts. At 80, still buzzing and clipping

“I’ve gotten a lot of new customers over the years,” Oricchio said. “I have the best customers in the world. Why? Because I treat them with respect. Sometimes you succeed with people and sometimes you don’t, but I don’t take anything for granted.”

His skill with scissors and combs dates to his youth in Salerno, Italy, where he was raised. After school, other kids would play and wrestle, but young Nick wanted none of that. His father, a carpenter, told him to “pick up what you want to do for the rest of your life.”

He decided he wanted to be a barber.

ver the decades, hairstyles have changed — from crew cuts to flat tops to locks that hung down to the shoulders, and even lower. But through it all, the barber behind the chair at Majestic Barber Shop, on Park Avenue, has remained the same.

Nick Oricchio, now 80, has been cutting hair, trimming moustaches and clipping beards in Long Beach for 60 years and, he said last week, his barbering days are nowhere near over.

arrived in Long Beach 10 days later. A month after that, he got a job at Majestic.

The shop has been in Long Beach for nearly 100 years, opening in 1925, where Bank of America now stands next to the train station.

It took Oricchio a while to learn English, but taking night classes at Nassau Community College, he eventually got the hang of the new language.

Nine months after he was hired, a young man named Antonio Gonzalez came to work at Majestic. Oricchio and Gonzalez worked alongside each other for 20 years before buying the shop

together in 1982. Since then the business has moved twice, first to where the restaurant Brixx and Barley is now, and then, in 2004, to its current spot, across Park Avenue from City Hall.

Gonzalez died of a brain aneurism in 2005.

Since then, Oricchio has been the shop’s sole owner. “We worked together for 42 years,” he said. “We never had an argument.”

Oricchio has seen all kinds of heads over the decades. He has cut the hair of many, including former U.S. Sen. Al D’Amato and Guy James Mangano, a former state assemblyman and senator and State Supreme Court justice.

Shine’S to celebrate 100 years in L.B.

of alcohol, Casey said. The trap door leading to the area under the bar where patrons drank in secret is still there.

The pub was sold in 1946 to Michael V. Delury, the father of former Long Beach City Councilman Mike Delury, for $12,000. Mike V. had been working at the bar after returning from World War II, and wanted to buy it and allow Shine to retire.

The $12,000 was an employee loan from Msgr. John Cass of St. Ignatius Martyr Church.

Michael J. Delury, Michael V.’s father, was employed as a sexton at the church. St. Ignatius had a couple of stipulations for the loan: The establishment must be closed on Good Friday and women must not work behind the bar.

T

his year, Shine’s will celebrate its 110th anniversary. The building is even older, dating back to the 19th century. Once called a tavern, it has been owned by three families since Eugene Shine, an Irish immigrant, opened shop in 1912.

Shine owned it for over 30 years, and even stayed open secretly during Prohibition, from 1920 to 1933.

At one point during that era, Shine’s was raided, and was found to be stockpiling about $300,000 worth

Both are still followed today.

One of Shine’s regulars, Rich Doraio, of Long Beach, has been to several St. Pat’s celebrations there, and takes part in the bar’s annual New York-to-California bike tour around the city’s streets. There’s a tradition of sharing a drink after the tour.

Shine’s, at 55 California St., is the “first place you go into the West End and the last place on your way out,” Doraio said. “It’s a tradition. It’s really cool to say you’ve been to Shine’s.”

all ages, music and all kinds of people having a good time.”

As you walk through the main door, the bar is on the left and the pool room on the right. The bar is where a garage used to be attached to the building, with the same entryway and wooden doors. The bar top is also unchanged since the days of Prohibition.

Shine’s is rife with history.

The legendary New York City journalist Jimmy Breslin used to sweep up the bar after hours when he was a teenager. He wanted free drinks for his work. He got them.

MLK COMMUNITY CENTER making dreams come true

T

he Long Beach Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center has been providing the city with programs on anything from entrepreneurial development to youth education and adult literacy since it started in 1967. Despite the pandemic, the community center continues to provide Long Beach residents with necessary services. As a non-profit charitable organization, the Community Center aims to do as much as it can to help Long Beach get through the Covid-19 pandemic.

Traditionally, the center has provided programs in youth and family recreation, youth leadership development, career development, financial literacy, family and community violence prevention, family strengthening, health and wellness promotion, and cultural awareness. As a result of Covid-19, these services are limited and others are virtual.

In keeping with the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center's commitment to teaching Long Beach residents useful skills, the center has been offering workshops via Zoom. Various do-ityourself face mask tutorials have taken place. These sessions are available in both English and Spanish — for those who cannot comfortably interact with others in English. The center hopes to hold more virtual programs in the future. Announcements for these workshops are listed on the community center's Facebook page.

Since many find themselves unable to feed their families as a result of the current conditions, the MLK Community Center has also made it a priority to initiate the Grab and Go Food Program.

Rain or shine, the staff provides meals to those in need in the parking lot of the community center.

The program runs Monday through Friday from noon to 2 p.m. Social distancing guidelines are followed, and each staff member is required to wear a face covering. The center also accepts donations to this program through their Cashapp $LBMLK and their PayPal @Lbmlk.org. The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center strongly advises people to follow appropriate guidelines when picking up their meals.

The center welcomed Cedric Coad as its new board chairman, replacing James Hodge. The center also welcomed a new executive director last year, Mack Graham. The Staten Island native has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stony Brook University and earned a master's degree in nonprofit leadership from Fordham University in 2017. At Stony Brook, he had an internship at Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group.

While interning in the music industry, Graham worked with the New York Urban League. He also was a grassroots fundraiser.

From family tragedy to

WRESTLING TRIUMPTH

L

ong Beach loves a hero. The city got one in the guise of Dunia Sibomana, who came to the United States in November, 2015 for surgery. A native of Congo, in Central Africa, he had been attacked by several wild chimpanzees as he and two family members played near Virunga National Park near his hometown.

His family members were killed but Duniua, then 6, survived but was left with life-altering facial injuries.

His lips were torn off, his cheek was lacerated and he suffered muscle damage that made it hard to swallow or talk.

Dunia underwent more than a dozen surgeries, the first in 2016 at Stony Brook University's Children's Hospital to restore his appearance and facial functions.

Since he came to Long Beach, his fellow students, teachers and neighbors rallied around him. And now he’s found a home here, where he truly has settled in. And has captured the attention of the city.

During a Sunday afternoon in early February, at Nassau Community College, Dunia, an eighth grader, captured the Nassau Division I 102-pound title with a LIVING IN LONG BEACH - 2022-2023

The Long Beach City Council presented him with a plaque and he got a standing ovation from members of the crowd at City Hall at a February ceremony. The Long Beach Police Department also got involved, giving Dunia on a tour of the station house with Police Commissioner Ron Walsh.

Duia had never entered a classroom or spoken English until his first host, Jennifer Crean, enrolled him in a Hauppauge school a month before his initial surgery.

He began wrestling competitively four years ago in the Gladiators youth program, coached by Miguel Rodriguez, the Long Beach Middle School coach and a longtime varsity assistant. Rodriguez and his wife, Marissa, met Dunia in the summer of 2016 at a Skudin Surf camp, and they bonded almost instantly.

In 2020, the Rodriguezes began the adoption process to make Dunia a member of their family. “He has a ton of energy,” Rodriguez said. “I coach soccer, wrestling and track, and he always went everywhere with me. He’s competitive in everything he does.”

amp Anchor in Lido Beach, which serves about 1,200 childrenand adults whohave specialneeds, is up and running and offering a variety of programs. The camp features programs like bowling, cooking and fitness classes, among many others. Additionally, the staff also has a newsletter. Camp Anchor hosts fundraisers throughout the year, which can be found at campanchor.org.

Camp ANCHOR, the Town of Hempstead's sixweek day camp program, will serve 720 children and adults with special needs throughout the summer. Camp participants enjoy an array of athletic, aquatic and cultural programs, as well as field trips and special events. This comprehensive recreational day camp will be available to eligible participants who are 5 years of age and older.

Transportation is provided. Registration fee required.

Program: Six-week program runs Monday to Friday at Lido Beach Town Park.

They are recruiting new volunteers for the

summer 2022 camp season after not being able to last year. The volunteer program is very competetive and therefore those interested can only be placed on the waitlist two times per year. To be a volunteer those interested must be at least 14 years of age by July 1.

ince its establishment in 1928, the Long Beach Public Library has provided a wide range of programs and services to the community with the purpose of bringing people together to learn, to grow and to be inspired.

With a main building, a Point Lookout branch and a West End branch, the library serves the Long Beach School District, which includes the City of Long Beach, Lido Beach, East Atlantic Beach and Point Lookout.

A five-person Board of Trustees governs the library and usually meets every third Monday of the month. Trustees are elected at large and serve fiveyear terms. Board agendas, minutes and directors’ reports are posted online at www.longbeachlibrary. org.

The main building is a Wi-Fi hotspot and has a technology center, quiet study, tutoring room, art gallery, program room and a 175-seat multipurpose auditorium. The library has an up-to-date collection of fiction and non-fiction books, graphic novels, a growing collection of language books, audiobooks, electronic databases, compact discs, films and magazines for all ages. also a co-sponsor of the Long Beach Holocaust Library, the first of its kind on Long Island.
