Adventureland is once again honoring tradition while channeling innovation by introducing three new rides in 2019. The brand-new custom designed Lighthouse Drop Tower is sure to be a new favorite for Adventureland fans. Located next to Mystery Mansion, the 40-ft. tall nautical-themed ride features a drop of 26 feet, giving a thrill to all brave enough to experience it! The Lighthouse Drop Tower is suitable for children 40” inches or taller with an adult. Riders over 48” do not require an adult. After nearly 10 seasons at our park, Adventureland says goodbye to the Lady Bug Coaster and welcomes the new Rattlesnake Coaster. Though the track remains the same, a new rattlesnake train, new station, and new landscape will complete the re-theming of this family coaster. Similar to the Lady Bug, this coaster is appropriate for riders 36”or taller with an adult. Adventureland is also saying goodbye to Crocodile Run this year. After 15 seasons at the park, the Crocodiles will be replaced by the new Rescue Boats ride, featuring updated Coast Guard inspired gondolas. The re-theming of this area will complete its transformation. This ride is suitable for children 44” or over with an adult. Did you know that three out of four car seats are used incorrectly? Could yours be one of them? Schedule an appointment to have your child safety seat inspected by Safe Start, a program of the EAC Network. Safe Start is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration with a grant from the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. Certified technicians will inspect car seats and provide essential information about child passenger safety. Every parent needs to be aware that motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for children ages 1-12. Every day, approximately 19 children are treated in New York State hospitals for motor vehicle injuries. Most 8-12 year-olds seriously injured or killed in car crashes were not wearing seat belts, and more than 90 percent of child safety seats are installed improperly. That’s where EAC can help — by educating the community on passenger safety and work with parents and child care providers to promote effective and appropriate
use of car seats, booster seats, and seat belts in order to prevent injuries to children. Safe Start promotes the safety of all occupants riding in motor vehicles in order to reduce the number of children riding unrestrained. Thus, a major component is community outreach and subsequently, conducting educational workshops. Safe Start hosts permanent fitting stations in Nassau and Suffolk Counties that offer safety seat inspections by certified technicians. The program’s van offers a mobile fitting station to provide these services to parents in need at unlimited locations. In addition, complimentary child safety restraints are provided to clients most in need. The community gets involved too. Safe Start seeks funding or pro bono service to build a heated and air conditioned garage to allow additional seat checks to be conducted during inclement weather. The live performing arts are a shared experience in many families; providing strong bonding moments and lifetime family memories. Preparing your child for their theater visits will help produce positive results and instill a love of the arts that will last throughout their lives. Seek out professional theaters focusing specifically on introducing children to the live arts. These organizations keep childhood development stages, attention spans and content front and center for young theatergoers. Before coming to the theater, share with your child what they will see and make connections to familiar experiences. Let them know that the live performing arts could have actors, dancers, musicians and performers of all types who will be right in front of them, sharing a story with all members of the audience. This is similar to what they see on television when they view people who play or perform a story. The difference is that in the theater the performers can see and hear them too. Parents should encourage their children to respond naturally to what they are seeing in the performance. It is okay for children to quietly ask questions of their parents. Laughing, oohs, ahs, giggles, singing, and even fearful noises or crying happen when children watch live performance. Parents should be ready to join in the response and model behavior for their child. If your child reacts to the darkened space or an action on the stage, assure your child that the theater is a safe place to explore emotion, imagination and entertainment. Professional performances for young children are carefully selected to match the emotional and physical
development needs of their audience. Age recommendations are provided so that you can evaluate your own child’s level of development as related to the performance. If you have questions, contact the theater directly. A unique aspect of productions for young audiences is the level of interactivity built into the productions. Audiences are encouraged to be part of the performance in small and big ways. Encourage your child to contribute, but do not force an unwilling child. Remember, every child learns in different ways. As long as they are attentive they are absorbing the performances on stage. Let your child know what to expect when the performance ends and how to show their appreciation to the performances by clapping. Remind them that this is the way we say thank you in the theater. Remind them that the actors can hear them on stage. Many performances geared to young audiences include the opportunity to meet and talk with the performers after the show. This can include the chance to ask questions about the show, get pictures with the performers or say thank you. Take advantage of your travel time home to talk about the things your child learned in the performance. In the days following a theater visit you might even catch them creating and acting out their own stories because of their theater experience. Remember, that many artists or performing art venues provide packets of information online, which offer pre- and post-performance activities to maximize your live theater experience.
