esides the obvious physical benefits, youth sports provide social interaction that also provides a degree of mental health. Since most sports require getting up close and personal with other athletes, the Covid-19 pandemic has created some challenges. "Initially, there was a fear of transmission of Covid-19 among athletes, especially with the contact sports. That is why a lot of these sports were canceled or postponed. But fortunately, we have not seen a rapid spread amongst contact sports," says Dr. Jennifer Maynard, a sports and family physician at Mayo Clinic. According to Dr. Maynard, as the pandemic has gone on, statistics indicate that sports are not the issue. Rather, data indicate the spread of Covid-19 among athletes occurs not during sports participation, but from social contact, she says. And the rate of infection is proportional to the community rate. "It's the environment of the athletes, both on and off the court or the field that makes the biggest difference, not the actual sport. Most local outbreaks are due to contact in the locker room or on the sidelines or from other social engagements outside of the sport itself," she explains. Recently, the National Federation of State High School Associations released a statement, revising its earlier “statement on risk of Covid-19 during high school sports." The biggest change is that the federation eliminated its tiered system that ranked the risk of infection by sport, says Dr. Maynard. The group instead shared findings that showed athletes playing contact sports and indoor sports are at a higher risk of illness when compared to noncontact sports or outdoor sports. But certain factors can mitigate risk. "For instance, indoor sports can be similar risk to outdoor if you use a mask, for example, with basketball or volleyball,' says Dr. Maynard. "The general consensus is that there are many more positives than drawbacks in getting athletes back engaged. For one, there's plenty of data that show those who do athletics do better in their school life and their
home life. They succeed in future jobs and leadership roles. We absolutely want to get our athletes back to play as fast as possible but as safe as possible for the benefits of both their physical and mental health." Her top tips to parents, coaches, athletic trainers — and students themselves: √ Stay on guard and continue with social distancing. √ Universally wear a mask, especially in social situations where you cannot physically distance. √ Practice proper hand hygiene and stay home when you're sick. "Lead by example to make sure we are able to continue to lower the rates of Covid19," says Dr. Maynard. n Courtesy Mayo Clinic News Network Above photo: Young athletes have eagerly welcomed a safe return to play.

ith more than 70 parks and recreation facilities, Nassau County is literally full of places to play. Many of these parks have pools — both indoor and outdoor —great playgrounds (and winter skating — but no need to think about that now). Others offer some of Long Island's most unique opportunities for recreation. From a recreation of a 19th-century village to an aerodrome field to castle-like mansions, Nassau County has plenty to offer. Hiking and biking trails, swimming pools, and outdoor adventures can be had all across the county. Here’s a selection to get you started on your family adventure. And don’t forget a about a pleasant stroll or bike ride at your local neighborhood park.

An interactive exhibit encourages children to climb aboard an authentic dugout canoe, gather some fish, then pick corn and other vegetables and place them on a realistic looking fire for a "meal." After touring the museum, visitors can amble out back, enjoy a picnic, identify butterflies in the colorful garden, then head down to the beach. A short but steep woodland path takes you to the rocky shore of Long Island Sound. The museum hosted workshops and events all year long, prior to the pandemic, and is expected to resume when it is safe to do so.

Are there extra safety steps taken for sports camps? In addition to the general safety steps for overnight and day camps, sports camps should follow safety guidance for drills, practices and competitions. This includes local and state rules, If you’re sending your child out of state, which can vary widely.

What happens if someone gets sick? Camps should have plan for what to do if a camper or staff member starts having symptoms of Covid-19, or any other illness. This should be based on local/state public health guidelines and policies about how to respond and report suspected Covid-19 cases. They should provide clear information to staff, campers and their families on when and how long to stay home if they get sick or have close contact with some who has Covid-19.

How will the camp help children follow coronavirus safety rules? Camps should have age-appropriate ways to help children practice hand hygiene, stay a safe distance from others, and wear face masks whenever possible and practical. This can be a challenge, especially for younger campers, so they will need a lot of reminders. Will most activities be indoors or outside? Having activities outdoors, with more fresh air and room to spread out, can lower the risk of spreading Covid-19. Being outside also gives children a way to connect with nature, which can boost their health and mental health after a long, stressful year. However, even outside, it is important to avoid sharing germs. Camps should limit shared equipment for games and activities and clean them often.

S
ummer camps can be a chance for children and teens to make friends, learn new skills, and spend time outdoors. Kids have missed out on a lot of these opportunities during the pandemic. You may be looking for a camp where your child can relax and reconnect, but worried since Covid-19 continues to be a concern. More than a year into the pandemic, studies show that camps with proper safety steps in place can greatly limit the spread of Covid-19 infections. Key steps include mask wearing, physical distancing, having smaller groups, and cleaning and disinfecting as part of the daily routine. If you're considering camp for your child this summer, whether it's a just during the day or an overnight program, start by addressing these questions.
Bruce Mirkin, FnAo • 28 south Park Avenue, Rockville Centre
Is camp staff trained on the specific health needs of children? Children attending camp may be afraid of being away from home and gathering face-
to-face with others after a lengthy time at home. The camp’s health providers should have specialized training in children's health and emotional well-being. Counselors should also have training available to help children cope with stress they may be experiencing. What kind of support is available for campers with special health care needs? Camp directors should aim to meet the needs of all children. Some children with special health care needs or disabilities may need special accommodations so they can enjoy camp while being protected against Covid-19. If your child has special health care needs, talk with camp directors and your pediatrician to identify what specific accommodations your child may need. Existing plans, such as Individualized Family Service Plans and Individual Education Plans, can be helpful. How will campers move throughout the day at camp? According to the CDC, small groups of campers with dedicated staff, when possible, will help minimize Covid-19 risk. Staggered arrival and drop-off times may also help limit contact between groups. How will snacks and meals work? It may be safest for campers bring their own meals, if possible, and eat in separate areas or with their smaller group. This would be less risky than dining halls or cafeterias. Ideally, children should bring their own water bottles rather than drinking from water fountains. What extra steps are being taken at overnight camps? When looking at overnight camps, ask if children will bunk with their daytime groups and how sleeping areas will be arranged. Lining up mats or beds so that campers and staff sleep head-to-toe at least six feet apart can help limit risk, Should my child be tested for Covid-19 before or during camp? A diagnostic Covid-19 test can be useful when a camper or a staff member had a known exposure, or is showing coronavirus symptoms. In these cases, test results can help guide decisions such as who can return to camp safely, when to notify families whose children may have been exposed, or whether the camp should be closed. However, antibody blood tests should not be used in decisions about going to camp. These tests only show if someone had the virus at one point in time. They can't identify someone who still has an active infection without symptoms, for example. n Above photo: A time-honored tradition, camps are eager to welcome campers once again this summer.

Summer is on the horizon Camps are ready to rebound
S
ummer is just around the corner and after many months of limited activities during a long winter in a pandemic, many parents and children are looking forward to being outside and enjoying summer camp activities. There are important physical and mental health benefits to summer camp. After resisting in 2020, many parents see an antidote to a school year when their children have been glued to a computer screen. According to some camp operators, their summer programs are filling faster this year than in years before Covid. Tuitions from last summer have been rolled over for many families, giving most programs a head start in enrollment. With some camps limiting their enrollment for this summer and teen programs not offering the same number of trips as in normal times, now is the time to start making decisions if you’re preparing to place your kids in a summer program this season. Summer camps offer children opportunities for peer interaction, increased independence, leadership roles, exercise and the challenge of trying new things. These experiences are even more significant given the social limitations that the Covid-19 pandemic has placed on children. It will be important for parents to find summer camps that help children reestablish these important social connections while maintaining the important Covid-19 risk mitigation strategies to keep children healthy while at camp. Day Camps All camps will be following the CDC’s guidelines to maintain healthy environments for campers. How will your camp implement these guidelines? Creating a healthy camp environment: Camps should be clear that any camper or counselor experiencing Covid-
ture? Will the camp notify other families if a child tests positive for Covid and what will the policy be?
19 symptoms must remain at home and obtain a Covid test before returning to camp. What are your camps protocols on daily screenings and quarantine requirements for exposed campers and/or staff? Face masks and physical distancing: All campers and counselors should wear face masks. Physical distancing is particularly important during times of high intensity activity. How will the camp accommodate increased spacing of campers and counselors? What will be the maximum number of campers per group? Will the same staff be assigned to the same group everyday? Limit carpooling: Unvaccinated campers should ride to camp with people in their own household. Hygiene and cleaning: Campers and staff should wash hands frequently. Surfaces and shared objects should be wiped down often. Vaccination and infection policy: How will camps monitor campers and staff daily for Covid-19 symptoms while at camp? If a child develops symptoms, how will the camp manage sick children and facilitate their safe depar-
Sleepaway Camps Most sleepaway camps plan to create a “bubble” this summer for children. In order to do this, children and families will need to limit high risk activities and avoid large gatherings during the week before camp starts. Most camps will require a Covid test before the camper arrives and many will perform testing on campus once the camper arrives. Some issues to think about including the following. Camp arrival and risk mitigation: How will camps structure the first week of camp? Will the camp perform Covid screening tests on all campers once they arrive? Will the camp test throughout the duration of the session? Have most of the staff/counselors received the vaccine? Also determine if children will wear masks during the first few days of camp and find out if the children be in cohorts for the first week or for the entire camp session. Activities: Understand how activities will be structured and how the will camp utilize and maximize outdoor spaces, including mealtime procedures. Parent visiting days: Unfortunately, most camps will not be able to have camp visiting days as the arrival of many people outside the camp bubble carries the risk of bringing Covid into the camp environment. If your child’s camp is hosting a visiting day, it is important to ask the camp how they plan to mitigate the risk of Covid exposure. Infection policy: Understand the camp’s plan for a child that has developed Covid-like symptoms. Have they created a place to isolate sick children? If a camper does test positive for COVID, how will the camp manage quarantining bunkmates and other staff or campers exposed to the sick camper? n

or many of us, the memories of summer camp stick with us forever. They're triggered and brought to mind by the smell of a campfire, the sight of a canoe in the water or simply a cheeky song that we remember belting out with our summer friends. 2020 put a hold on the making of those memories, but as things come back to the table of opportunity, many summer programs are working diligently to create a safe space for our kids to begin to get back to the business of making memories. Whether you’re ready to register, or prefer to create your own summer memories with your children, find an option that makes you comfortable. As the end of a pandemic school year approaches, the idea of summer break may cause some stress for parents, not quite sure of what to expect or how to prepare for a happy, safe summer. While your child may be thrilled by the end of the school year, anticipating lazy days and sleeping in, the prospect of summer break isn’t quite that unalloyed pleasure for parents. And if you have a child with emotional or developmental issues who is challenging in the best of times, nothing calls on whatever extra powers you might possess more than the long break that lies ahead.

Make it visual Kids who thrive on predictability and are prone to panic over transitions —including those on the autism spectrum — benefit
Make plans Try to schedule as many activities as possible that work for your family, as early as possible, and keep your kids posted. This can mean anything from “we’re going to Aunt Mary’s on Thursday for a barbecue” to having a set routine that every day, weather permitting, you’ll be going to the playground or pool. Even one such activity can give kids a center of gravity, so to speak, around which the rest of the day can be structured. Get outdoors Home has become a safe cocoon during the pandemic, but no child should spend hours in front of a screen. If camp or a local summer program isn’t in the cards, try to find something your child enjoys — riding a bike or scooter, or splashing at the pool, water park, or beach — and do it. Plus, physical activity is good for everyone’s mind, body and spirit, especially those kids with energy to burn. Maintain a behavioral system Children and teens, especially, may act like they want to be in charge, but the truth is they feel safer knowing exactly what you expect of them and the rewards that result from good behavior. This is never truer than during the seemingly boundless — and boundary-free — summer break. n
