The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision last month in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization left the issue of abortions up to individual states. It’s a decision widely seen as overturning the landmark Roe v.

Wade decision in 1973, that provided protected access to abortion.

The decision has left lawmakers, health care providers and Americans in general to navigate a new and what some warn could be a far messier legal, political and medical landscape.

In the wake of the more recent decision, 10 states have officially banned abortions, with a dozen or so more expected to codify Continued on page 14

Gen Z student challenges baby boomer for council seat

He’s young. He’s still in college. And he wants to represent his Valley Stream community on the Town of Hempstead council.

His name is Anthony Cruz, a 20-year-old Democrat, who will have his work cut out for him in a November election. Standing in his way, is incumbent councilwoman Melissa “Missy” Miller, an Atlantic Beach Republican who represents a large chunk of the South Shore.

Miller, 58, is pretty new to the council herself, appointed earlier this year to fill out the remain-

der of Bruce Blakeman’s term after he rose to become the Nassau County executive. And Cruz aims to cut her time in office short, using the power of the ballot box on Nov. 8.

This might be Cruz’s first brush with local politics, but it isn’t for Miller, who spent five years in the Assembly before stepping down because of family obligations. Miller returned to fill out Blakeman’s term on the town council, and decided it was something she could continue doing.

Cruz, on the other hand, is jump-starting what he believes is a pivotal moment in local poli-

tics.

“More and more people — not just in this council district specifically, but really across the Town of Hempstead — are realizing that the change that they want to see can happen, or can rally start to happen, at the local level,” Cruz said.

“We have a really significant opportunity right now to elect someone that isn’t beholden to special interests, or party machine politics, or the establishment, but someone who truly wants to serve. Someone whose first and foremost priority will be the people of our district.”

Cruz has rallied around three

core issues for his campaign: empowerment, infrastructure and accessibility. His proposals include creating a database that provides a timeline for infrastructure projects such as repair and renovation of roads and highways under the town’s jurisdiction. He also wants to review the accessibility of town meetings, revisit the possibility of

having a remote option, and improve public access to documents and information on the town’s website.

Cruz cemented himself as a student advocate back in 2018 as an incoming Valley Stream Central High School senior when he was picked to serve as a student liaison to the school district’s Continued on page 4

District 13 welcomes new board officers

The Valley Stream District 13 board of education held its annual reorganization meeting last Wednesday to install new officers for the incoming board as well as reshuffle its committee positions.

Newcomer Vincente Caposio and Milagros Vicente were sworn in and took the oath of office as newly elected and re-elected board trustees, respectively. This will be Milagros’ third term on the board after serving for six years.

Caposio assumed the seat of Antoinette “Toni” Pomerantz, who has been a trustee since 2013 and an elementary school teacher for more than 30 years.

Pomerantz was all smiles as she sat in the front row to ANtOiNette watch the incoming board take their “tONi” oaths. “Fabulously” pOMerANtz retired from public service, she is lookformer trustee ing forward to attending future board meetings as a resident of the district.

“My advice (for the new trustee) is to care about kids and do the right things for kids,” said Pomerantz. “Just keep the eye on the ball and keep an eye on the kids.”

“My priorities are to ensure that the board articulates a clear vision for a wellrounded education for our children, one that balances high-quality instruction with the community’s financial ability to support such a vision,” Vicente said in a statement to the Herald earlier this year. “I believe an effective school board must create a culture of learning, adapt and evaluate policies, and create avenues to be more transparent and listen to all stakeholders.”

“I feel I can be an asset by helping to improve transparency and communication between the board and parents and taxpayers, recognizing and prioritizing parental rights and choice, developing efforts to increase community involvement, and being fiscally responsible,” Caposio said in a statement to the Herald earlier this year.

The board nominated and made a unanimous 7 – 0 vote to appoint Jennifer Oliveri as president of the board for one year term. Oliveri was formerly the board’s vice president.

School boards are required by law to have an office of president, according to the New York State School Boards Association. Oliveri as president will provide general direction for trustees and school policy discussions to follow. Additionally, the board president speaks on behalf of its members in official communications. Trustee Gerardo Cavaliere’s name was offered as a nominee for vice president of the board as well as Patricia Farrell’s. The board ultimately voted Cavaliere 6 – 1 as vice president of the board for one year term. The vice president resides as president in meetings where they might be absent and assumes the office should the board president vacate their position. Final moment with the last minute

He’s taken on a number of advocacy and leadership roles during his current time at New York University, including as a student government senator and committee chairman for the NYU Steinhardt undergraduate student government.

Staying true to his roots as a school advocate, Cruz made an unsuccessful bid to take the vacated seat of former school trustee Paul DePace just two years ago.

He is currently co-president of the Central High Parent-Teacher Association.

If elected, Cruz would make history not only as the youngest Hempstead council member, but as its first elected Gen Z member — those born between 1997 and 2012. And in a political field largely dominated by boomers and Gen X, Cruz isn’t shy about his youth. In fact, he treats it as one of his strengths.

“I see my youth as an advantage to being able to not only from a representation standpoint but from a policy standpoint,” he said. “It’s about being able to see things from the perspective of how this benefit would, not just the community now, but in the future as well, because this will impact not just our current generation, but my generation who will be growing up in the town of Hempstead 10, 20, 30 years from now.”

For her part, Miller is “running on the same issues I’ve been running on for

years: quality of life for our constituents, lower taxes, safer streets, and greater accessibility for our disabled populations.”

“Making sure our board is transparent is something people have complained about in the past, and that is something I will focus on improving during my campaign,” the councilwoman said. “We want to make sure that everyone’s voices are heard.”

In expanding accessibility for those who are disabled, Miller says her board is in the process of equipping beaches with rollout mats to allow people access to the high tide water line who couldn’t otherwise.

“Unless you have a beach wheelchair, you can’t get them down to the actual water,” Miller said. “Senior citizens with a cane can’t walk steadily on the sand.”

Cruz knows there are a number of obstacles in his way — from age to political beliefs — but he says he won’t let that discourage him.

“As likely the youngest candidate for local office on Long Island, as someone who would be one of the first Latino people elected to a seat within the Town of Hempstead,” Cruz said, “and as someone who would likely be the first openly queer person elected, it’s particularly important to me to make sure I keep those values of mine and minority communities in mind throughout this campaign.”

What’s so special about the “last minute?”

Why do we wait until that “last minute” to make a choice or return the response card or climb about the train or send in payment.

We certainly don’t relish being in last place or last in line, and although we gratuitously preface introductions with “last but not least,” the truth is the last to arrive is deemed the runt of the litter and the last one in is a rotten egg.

Nevertheless, notwithstanding the above, there’s something very special about the last minute that causes so very many of us to enthusiastically embrace (and fill) it upon its arrival.

You, there are “minute steaks” and Minutemen, but on nothing gets our attention like the last minute.

Recently, a prominent psychologist suggested that we wait for the last minute because there is a certain magic to the last minute; a certain challenge and thrill in getting in under the wire, and making that last minute “game time decision” that wins or saves the game.

Our fascination with the last minute, she says, is not a function of procrastination (merely putting something off) or indecision; no, those of us who schedule our moves and actions to coincide with the “last minute” often do so just for the excitement and suspense inherent in the last minute.

Thus, the hustle and bustle of the holi-

days is best illustrated by its frenzied, last minute shopping, while weddings and other events, no matter how well-times and planned, invariably owe much of their charm (and unforgettable memories) to what’s contained in the last minute details.

Historically, great speeches have often derived their greatness from last minute changes, while some of our tastiest meals and treats were “whipped up at the last minute,” even as some of our great (and notso-great) politicians were elected by a last minute surge of last minute voters.

The last minute contains the fabled and heroic “nick of time” when the cavalry arrives. It’s when the clock winds down and the champ stands up. oldman The “last minute” is, indeed, more than a mere moment in time: it’s 60 seconds of urgency that demand your very best effort with no hesitation, second guessing or delay.

She concludes that you can waste time, kill time, keep time and lose time, but the “last minute” reminds you that you can run out of time, and thus you must make every (last) minute count.

Queens man found with loaded gun in North Lawrence A queens man driving on Rockaway Turnpike in North Lawrence was found with a loaded gun by Nassau police on July 7 at roughly 10:10 p.m.

Officer saw a 1998 Nissan Maxima with dark tinted windows heading north by 25-301 Rockaway Tpke., and then conducted a vehicle stop. After being allowed to search the car, police uncovered an illegal black Taurus 9-millimeter handgun loaded with a 15-round magazine that contained 10 rounds.

Steve Innocent, 32, of Dickens Street, Far Rockaway was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, fourth-degree criminal possession and vehicle and traffic violations. Arraigned July 8, Innocent is being held on a $50,000 bond.

Know any good mother-in-law jokes?

Yes, the stereotypical mother-in-law is seen as critical, controlling, interfering and demanding. Are these complaints valid? For some, yes. Especially for those who were dominating moms and who still display a strong need for control.

A dominating mother-in-law may be pitted against a strong personality much like her own. This is true if her son has “married his mom,” as some men do. Yes, a daughter-in-law can also be critical and controlling, making a mother-in-law feel like an outsider within her own family.

Conflicts often revolve around childrearing (you’re letting him do that?) finances (you spent what?) - food (that’s what you made for dinner?) - holidays (it’s not the traditional way!) and boundary issues (It’s none of my business but….). The underlying dynamic of these conflicts is who exercises the control and who defines the correct way to

hurt you. If her comments have more impact on you than you’d like, see if you can become more assertive (but not aggressive) and less sensitive.

Advice for Mothers-In-Law: Expect that the next generation will do things differently from you. Let that be okay, even if you disagree with it. You may have been a great mom, but now is the time to retire from active duty and join the reserves. Be available for full-time involvement only if called up for emergencies. If you’ve put all your eggs in one basket — living your life only for your children — it’s time to make a change. Herald sports Ducks carry momentum into second half

or the first time under thirdyear manager Wally Backman, the Long Island Ducks enter the second half of the Atlantic League Baseball schedule without the security of a playoff spot.

The four-time league champion Ducks completed the first half July 5 with a record of 36-30, but that left them more than a dozen games off the pace of North Division runaway winner Southern Maryland.

“We made some changes with our pitching staff and I’m pleased with how we finished the first half,” Backman said.

“We were 10 games over .500 in June and we’re going in the right direction.

“We’re not satisfied with our record and we know we’re capable of much more,” he added. “We know we’re better going into the second half. Southern Maryland had a great first half. We played them tough head-to-head. It’s just a lot of teams that beat us couldn’t beat them.”

Entering the second half, Backman said the Ducks’ five-man starting pitching rotation is comprised of Stephen Tarpley, Scott Harkin, Akeel Morris, Joe Iorio and Anderson DeLeon. Brett Kennedy, who had a team-leading 3.03 ERA, had his contract purchased by the Boston Red Sox on May 24. Iorio and DeLeon, who began the season in the bullpen, were both members of the Ducks’ 2019 championship team.

“Joe and Anderson have made our rotation better,” Backman said. “We’re going with five guys for now and I may even bump it to six with Bennett Perry coming back from injury.”

Tarpley, a lefthander who appeared in one game for the New York Mets last season, split six decisions in the first half with a 3.59 ERA and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 53 to 13.

“We had a cold start to the year, but we’ve picked up our game a lot and we have a lot of promise,” Tarpley said.

“Everyone is exciting about what we can accomplish in the second half.”

The Ducks’ closer on a given night varies based on matchups. Tyler Webb (2.33 ERA) has 6 saves, and Sandy Baez (1.71) and Nick Goody (2.45) both have 5.

Regarding the offense, Backman said: “Right now our lineup is pretty set. We don’t have a big bopper who’s going to hit 30-40 home runs and can change a game on one swing of the bat.”

The Ducks went deep only 43 times in 66 games, ranking 9th in the 10-team league in the category.

“Our ballpark is tough to hit homers in regardless,” Backman added. “So we have to continue to manufacture as much offense as possible and we have the personnel to do it.”

STEphEN TarpLEY carrIES a 3.59 ERA into the second half of the season to go with 53 strikeouts against only 13 walks.

First baseman Sam Travis has been Long Island’s most consistent hitter, Backman said. In the first half, Travis batted .314 with a team-leading 8 home runs and 53 RBIs. “Sam’s been hitting very well for us after not getting a lot of playing time in AAA in recent years,” Backman noted. “He’s playing every day for us and he’s right up there among the league leaders in RBIs despite missing a couple of weeks.”

Ten-year MLB veteran Alejandro De Aza, who played 108 games with Lancaster last season, is raking at the plate in his first year with the Ducks. The 38-year-old outfielder had a team-best .325 average in the first half with 5 homers, 32 RBIs and 34 runs. He’s part of a deep outfield that includes Johnni Turbo, L.J. Mazzilli and Dustin Woodcock.

The infield took a hit when the Mets purchased the contract of shortstop Deven Marrero, who anchored the Ducks defense. “We lost Deven who was by far the best shortstop in the league,” Backman said. “Good for him, but that’s a hard position to fill.”

“We just have to go out there and play the way we’re capable of playing,” Backman said. “When all is said and done, we should be right there in contention in the end.”

2012 championship team honored

The Ducks hosted a 10th anniversary celebration of their 2012 Atlantic League championship team on July 2.

In attendance were two integral parts of the championship club. They included

shortstop Dan Lyons, who was named the 2012 Championship Series Most Valuable Player after his walk-off bunt single in the bottom of the ninth inning in Game Five won the title for Long Island, and outfielder Kraig Binick, a native of Hicksville, who was an Atlantic League All-Star that year and batted .405 during the playoffs. Lyons threw out a ceremonial first pitch to Binick prior to the game against York.

“Our run to the championship in 2012 is one of the most memorable stories in Atlantic League history,” said Ducks president/GM Michael Pfaff. “On this milestone anniversary of that incredible season, we welcomed back some distinguished alumni and celebrated their accomplishments.”

Herald ScHoolS Central High junior earns double distinction Valley Stream Central High School junior Michaela Sinclair achieved the dual distinction of joining MIT’s acclaimed Online Science, Technology and Engineering Program (MOSTEC) this summer and being named a QuestBridge College Prep Scholar.

Prep Scholars are high school juniors who have shown high academic achievement and become eligible for a slew of financial and academic aid resources including scholarships and additional support with the college admissions process. The QuestBridge program helps link talented academic students with educational and scholarship opportunities with the nation’s most selective colleges.

Michaela has her current sights on pursuing chemistry in the hopes of eventually becoming a dermatologist and developing her own line of skin-care products. Her interests are varied, however, and at MOSTEC, which is a six-month program that begins this summer, she’ll be broadening her area of knowledge and interests by studying neuroscience as well as applied mathematics and aquatic chemistry. MOSTEC applicants, many of whom come from underrepresented backgrounds or underserved communities, are selected based on their strong academic record and interest in science and engineering.

“Azriel is a well-rounded student who demonstrates enthusiasm, kindness, and hard work on a daily basis,” Jecewiz said. “I’m so excited that he was recognized for his outstanding academic performance, and I look forward to hearing of his continued success beyond high school.”

This is the first year the Nassau County Comptroller Elaine Phillips has offered this award, making Azriel an inaugural recipient. A Valley Stream man was arrested and charged by county prosecutors for using forged doctors’ prescriptions to dupe Nassau County pharmacies out of thousands of opioid pills.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Matthew Laube of the Narcotics, Firearms, and Gangs Bureau announced criminal charges against James Cosentino, 29, on July 7. He is charged with multiple counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument and criminal possession of a controlled substance. If found guilty, Cosentino faces a potential maximum sentence of nine years in prison.

He was indicted by a grand jury and arraigned before Acting Supreme Court Justice Francis Ricigliano. He is due back in court next month.

Cosentino allegedly stole prescription pads from doctors’ offices in Inwood and Valley Stream and went on a four-month stint starting in December 2021 handing forged prescriptions to pharmacies around the county. During which time police officials said Cosentino managed to nab 1,830 pills of oxycodone and morphine.

“Again and again, Cosentino allegedly used these forged prescription pads – stolen from doctors’ offices – to get his hands on thousands of pills,” said District Attorney Anne Donnelly in a state-

‘Wild about Harry’

arry Chapin’s tragic death is now decades behind us, but his music and philanthropy are

forever enshrined in Long Island’s collective consciousness. Stuart Markus, a longtime fixture on the local folk and acoustic scene, maintains his role as guardian of Chapin’s legacy, organizing the yearly memorial concert in Eisenhower Park.

Despite the years that have passed since Chapin’s death on the Long Island Expressway en route to his ill-fated performance in Eisenhower Park in July 1981, the man and his music still resonates — especially here on Long Island.

In fact, several show regulars were among the crowd, according to Markus, when what was supposed to be a joyous event turned into a vigil.

“Harry is so beloved in memory on Long Island,” Markus says. “You don’t have to look too hard to find someone who met him, whose school he did a benefit for, or someone who’s been helped by one of his charities. It’s so meaningful for the music community to come together and, in effect, do the concert he might have given.”

And come together they do — year after year. “I never

expected it would go on this long,” Markus says. “It is such a wonderful concert and everyone has a great time, which is a tribute to what a great man Chapin was.”

The troubadour’s song catalogue is creatively interpreted by each act, who make it their own, while honoring Chapin. “We’ve had some amazing arrangements, from folky to country, torch-song style to hard rock,” adds Markus. “It’s really interesting to see what they do. I encourage them to make songs fresh. They’re not just reproducing them the way Harry did.”

This year’s lineup includes staples of the area’s music community; returnees Roger Street Friedman, Frank Walker, Patricia Shih & Stephen Fricker, Robinson Treacher, Debra Lynne & Lora Kendall, Joe Iadanza, MediaCrime, Judith Zweiman, Martha Trachtenberg, Robin Greenstein, Christine Solimeno, Grand Folk Railroad, and Russ Seeger. They are joined by Markus, who performs with his longtime folk trio Gathering Time, and newcomers country guitarist JD Leonard and the Famous Dr. Scanlon Band, who are popular for their acoustic Americana sound.

As is their signature, Markus and Gathering Time will once again perform “Taxi.” “It’s such an epic ballad,” he says, “and his breakthrough song. It’s just a masterwork of songcraft.”

Besides Chapin’s big hits, his lesser works are also given their due, and other favorites, including “Shooting Star” and “Story of a Life.” And, as always, in the true spirit of Harry Chapin, the show concludes with the entire group on stage in a rendition of “Circle,” Chapin’s traditional closing.

More than just a concert, the free event involves a food drive. Concertgoers are asked to bring donations of nonperishable items to support Long Island Cares, the regional food bank and humanitarian organization founded by Chapin in 1980.

“The annual Harry Chapin tribute concert is always a very special event for all of us at Long Island Cares because so many of Harry’s fans attend and are extremely supportive of Long Island Cares and the work we do to assist the more than 316,000 Long Islanders struggling with domestic hunger and high food insecurity,” Paule Pachter, the organization’s chief executive officer, said in a statement.

The concert, held rain or shine, will be livestreamed on Facebook.

New York, however, will not be one of those states. Lawmakers in Albany have already codified Roe v. Wade, keeping its abortion access intact, and even expanding its protections in recent months, through the pen of Gov. Kathy Hochul.

New York also passed a series of laws intended to shield abortion providers in New York from being sued by other states that prohibit abortions, and has pledged millions of dollars to shore up abortion services.

Abortion clinics and health centers in New York are bracing for the potential inflow of hundreds of out-of-state women seeking access to the procedure, as lawmakers plan to make New York a “sanctuary state” for abortion.

That could affect how fast patients who already live in New York could get such care, said Dr. Sharon Gerber, director of complex family planning at Northwell’s South Shore University and Huntington hospital.

“So, generally, we may start to see patients who are getting abortions at later gestational ages because of the wait time to receive care,” Gerber said.

Abortion pills are available for first-trimester pregnancies which serve as an alternative to a clinic visit, Gerber said.

“It probably should be left to the states,” said Abraham Hoschander, a Brooklynbased attorney visiting Hendrickson Park last weekend. “The people are closer to the state governments than they are to the national government. There are some states who are more liberal-minded, and others are more religious-minded. If there is one rule nationwide, it less reflects the will of the people than if it were on a stateby-state basis.”

But Hoschander also noted that an absolute ban on abortion would go too far, sidelining medical situations where not having access to an abortion can be a “threat to a mother” or the child.

“I do not favor abortion on the whole,” Hoschander said, “but the circumstances should be brought up before a medical practicioner to get some sort of definitive response. Under the right circumstances, there are justified reasons abortion should be available to women.”

North Woodmere couple charged in robbery scheme A man and woman from North Woodmere allegedly robbed a North Merrick BP gas station at gunpoint at 7:10 p.m. on July 5.

Jerald Gadsden, 31, and Heleena Velazquez-Krupp, 38, both of Hewlett Drive, allegedly entered the station on Merrick Avenue and Gadsden approached the employee, a 62-year-old man, pulled out a gun and demanded money, police said.

The man, who police said feared for his life, opened the register and handed Gadsden an unspecified amount of money.

Both he and Velazquez-Krupp left on foot before the police responded.

The subsequent investigation found the couple on Hewlett Drive in North Woodmere driving in a 2011 Honda Pilot.

They were then arrested. Police discovered that Gadsden allegedly robbed the BP station on North Central Avenue in Valley Stream on June 6.

Gadsden is charged with two counts of first-degree robbery, second-degree robbery and two counts second-degree criminal use of a firearm. Velazquez-Krupp is charged with first-degree robbery, seconddegree robbery and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Both were arraigned on July 6. Gadsden is being held on a $100,000 bond. His next court date is July 15. The Legal Aid Society of Nassau County is representing him. As of press time, there is no available information on Velazquez-Krupp.

Q. We have been looking for real wood kitchen cabinets, and they really run the whole spectrum, from semi-reasonable to very expensive. A salesman told us that well-made cabinets and doors cost more because they’re made better, with more pieces fit together instead of from single panels. He told us that we’ll regret picking the cheaper doors, saying they won’t last. I know that over the years, our closet doors bind up from the changes in humidity, but is it really a significant cause to have to buy more expensive cabinets?

A. Yes. The most important factor when selecting materials for any type of construction, whether it’s a building or a cabinet, is to keep in mind that everything has movement, both internal and external. As I have written many times, wood was once the center of a tree, never intended in nature to be cut up and exposed. Once the wood is onte eeper taken from the heart of a tree, it begins to change shape based on temperature and moisture content.

Wood that is intended for structural use, like a common 2 x 4 wall stud, is typically dried to about 19 percent moisture content. This is done by laying the lumber outdoors in a covered area. Indoor lumber products are kiln dried to around 8 percent to balance out with indoor humidity, but the wood will not just stay at that moisture level. As the seasons change, wood products continue to adjust to the humidity they are subjected to.

It used to be that craftsmen let the finish trim moldings remain stored indoors, on site, to adjust to their final indoor installation. Unfortunately, most people are in a hurry to get the job done, and move on so the wood doesn’t get the chance to acclimate. Every so often I am asked to explain why there is cracking in sheetrock at corners or around doors. Most of the time, people suspect that it’s a structural problem, when it actually is the twisting and expansion or contraction of lumber that still has a different moisture level than the building.

The dynamic movement can split the lumber and crack the walls easily.

The same kind of movement can occur in cabinet doors, so to adjust for this internal movement, doors are often configured with what is referred to as “rails and styles” surrounding the center panel.

A well-crafted cabinet door will have movement if you place your hand on the center panel and move it up or down or side to side. The movement allows the door panel to expand or contract without binding, twisting or warping. Many doors imitate the look of multi-part doors, but are routed panels made from a single board. This kind of door can warp from typical moisture changes in a kitchen, from boiling water on a stove, a cross breeze on a summer day or when the heat comes on and the house gets dry. Good luck!

he summer is well under way and, happily, the U.S. Congress has gone home. While in D.C., they didn’t do much beyond a watered-down gun-control bill, with lots of other critical issues pending. With Washington quiet, all the action shifts to Fulton County, Georgia, where a grand jury may decide the fate of everyone from former President Donald Trump to other big names like Sen. Lindsey Graham and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Some people JERRY imagine that any county down KREMER South is a small municipality with a sheriff who spends most of his time chasing speeding cars driven by Northeasterners.

According to Wikipedia, Fulton County had the sad distinction of having 35 lynchings from 1877 to 1950, but today it is a large and bustling metropolitan area, encompassing most of Atlanta and 15 other cities. It has a population of over 1 million, very much like Nassau

and Suffolk counties.

Fulton County is named after Robert Fulton, the creator of the steamboat. It is home to such enterprises as Coca Cola, AT&T, Equifax, EarthLink, Cox Communications, Porsche Cars of North America and Wendy’s/ Arbys. Cases of major magnitude are heard in its county courthouse, and the grand jury that has been impaneled to hear the Trump election charges is composed of jurors from all walks of life.

For the past month, the Jan 6 congressional committee has been airing evidence on the insurrection, with numerous witnesses who have offered some headline-grabbing testimony about Trump’s actions on that fateful day. But no one knows whether the committee will make any criminal referrals to Attorney General Merrick Garland. And even if does single out the former president and his cohorts, it isn’t certain that Garland will take any action.

Meanwhile, New York state Attorney General Letitia James is pursuing civil allegations against the former president and members of his family. She has dog-

gedly gone after the Trump organization’s accountants and appraisers, along with present and former employees. It is possible that James will start a major civil suit against all of the Trump enterprises and family, but that would have no immediate criminal consequences.

So the real action is taking place in front a panel of grand jurors in Georgia who can indict anyone who they believe has committed a state crime relating to the 2020 election. Last month they heard from Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who undoubtedly testified about his now famous conversations with Trump in which he was asked to “find” 11,780 votes.

In addition, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is seeking the testimony of Giuliani and Graham. Guliani testified at numerous Georgia hearings, claiming that the state’s election returns were fraudulent. Graham called the Secretary of State asking about absentee ballots, with the clear inference that those ballots might be fraudulent as well.

ber of possible witnesses mentioned, but Willis has made it clear that she will call many people in the Trump orbit who made similar claims about the Georgia results.

Some of those potential witnesses will challenge the subpoenas they’ve received, but it is almost certain that Georgia courts will deny those efforts and force them to appear and testify.

Most of the American public’s attention has been focused on the Jan 6 committee hearings, and there is no doubt that in the coming weeks, there will be more testimony that may have an impact on Trump’s future political dreams, but nothing will emerge that will lead to any immediate criminal indictments. But Fulton County Court may be where a parade of well-known political names, including Trump himself, could face election-tampering charges.

History is made regularly in Washington, but a grand jury in Georgia may make some national history of its own.

re you traveling for real, or from your laptop? So many of us, passionate about getting up and going, have been making do with travel brochures and virtual tours these past two-plus years. Some folks who spent a lifetime saving for a special adventure or retirement trip are still waiting for it to be safe enough. On the scale of problems people are facing these days, travel plans pale, but taking to the road is still one of life’s abiding joys.

Whether or not you are travelers yourselves, if you turned to this page, you have visited dozens of countries, from Australia to Abu Dhabi to Tanzania to New Zealand to South Africa.

And I’m not hanging up my traveling shoes just yet. I am, however, staying stateside these days. The amalgam of unmasked crowds, canceled flights, war in Ukraine and concerns about getting sick in foreign lands has fixed our GPS to the USA.

If I wrote an essay called “What I Learned During the Coronavirus Pandemic,” it would emphasize traveling light and being ready to change plans.

Our plan this summer was to go to Maine, and so here we are.

We picked three locations, and various Airbnbs. I write now from Kennebunkport, which is a first-time visit for us, “us” being my husband and me and Lillybee, the traveling dog.

We’re in a small, 200-year-old house that has been beautifully kept and updated with lots of modern conveniences, including a tricked-out cook’s kitchen. It also has an old, narrow, steep stairway to the second floor, uneven floorboards, creaking banisters, low ceilings, and bells on the porch that move in the wind. This is a little strange, I know, but this house wrapped its arms around me immediately. We’ve stayed in lots of rental places, but this is a unique feeling, as if I could just stay forever. I imagine there are ghosts in the evening, and I say, welcome, sit by me, tell me your stories.

We are walking every day, and finding lobsters to eat, and chatting with the

locals when we can. We visited a local monastery, and found paths along the harbor that offered stunning seaside views. At the house, I can sit out back and read my books or do a crossword puzzle. The main tourist area is mobbed, and was crazy busy over the Fourth, but in general, the vibe is laid back.0 Yesterday we booked a day sailing trip. The ocean was rolling as we passed the Bush compound known as Walker’s Point. The Texas flag was flying under the American flag, which everyone here knows means the former president is in residence. Seals were bobbing just off the rocks.

It looked picture-perfect, and it was — and, like a picture, it was all surface.

Unbidden, intrusive thoughts rumbled through my head, like the problems of 43’s presidency, and his wars, and the misery of today’s politics, just an iPhone notification away. The world is always there, even on holiday. Even in a glorious moment.

We know we are lucky to have this getaway in a place that feels safe and close to nature and accessible to various kids and grandkids who may show up along

I confess to complicated feelings about the dozens of large, ornate historic summer “cottages” owned by people who come to Kennebunkport for brief stays in the hot weather. Like Newport. Like the Hamptons. Like the reverse in Palm Beach and Palm Springs. Some owners come for only a week or two. These outsized homes sit on vast parcels of land along the shore.

They require enormous upkeep.

These Kennebunkport beauties are a slice of history; some estates are owned by families who built them more than 100 years ago.

We tourists have a role to play. We bring cash, but some bring trash. I know we are outsiders looking in, and we try to behave ourselves; it is our good fortune to visit this community for a time.

The weather has been grand for a state that is notorious for foul, wet, chilly days, even in summer (which is said to be one week in July). It has been in the 70s and sunny, with a side of lobstah.

here are few sounds that can paint a more vivid picture than the ominous and simple theme created by composer John Williams for the 1975 film “Jaws.” If beachgoers weren’t afraid of sharks before Steven Spielberg released that thriller, they were after.

Yet despite recent attacks off Long Island beaches, sharks aren’t something we should lose sleep over. Not that we can dismiss these encounters — they are dangerous, and something we must pay attention to. The injuries, and the potential for deaths, are very real.

But at the same time, we can’t decide to cut the beach out of our summer plans with the discovery that the ocean does indeed include wildlife — and some varieties that might not take too kindly to swimmers.

Shark bites are rare. Very rare. Last year, the Florida Museum of Natural History tracked 73 unprovoked shark bites on people, with more than half of them in the United States. Nine lives were lost to sharks in unprovoked attacks worldwide, and just one here in America.

That’s in line with the past five years of data, including 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic lockdown reduced attacks significantly.

On Long Island, a shark attack was

something we’d talk about every 10 years or so, despite well over 1,000 miles of shoreline. But that has changed in recent years — and, according to experts, it will continue to change.

Christopher Paparo, who manages Stony Brook University’s Marine Sciences Center, told reporters that there are not only sharks off Long Island’s coast, but also whales and dolphins. But weren’t they always there? No, actually. The population of all three has grown dramatically in recent years — all up from virtually nonexistent in the 1960s.

That’s good news for the environment, even if it’s not so good for beachgoers. But that doesn’t mean people and sharks still can’t co-exist. It does mean much more diligence, and following some simple advice from the Florida museum, which has made sharks its focus for many years.

For example, swim with a buddy, since sharks are more likely to attack people alone in the water.

Stay close to shore, and be extra careful near sandbars or steep drop-offs, since sharks like those areas. Swim during the day, and avoid low-light hours at dawn and dusk, when sharks are typically feeding.

Don’t wear shiny jewelry, and avoid areas where there is a lot of fishing. Try not to splash too much, because sharks

can hear the sound, and might think there is food nearby.

Sure, “Jaws” and other thrillers have led us to believe that sharks can sense human blood, but there’s no evidence to support that. Still, if you do have an open cut, maybe avoid the water.

And if a shark is spotted, don’t race out of the water. Slowly and calmly make your way to the beach.

Keep in mind that with 70 or so attacks per year on average, your chances of being attacked by a shark remain extremely low. Your chance of being killed in a car accident is 1 in 84, according to the National Safety Council. Your chance of drowning is 1 in 1,134. Your chance of being struck and killed by lightning is 1 in 79,746.

The odds of being fatally wounded in an unprovoked shark attack? 1 in 3.7 million.

So grab your towel and your suntan lotion. Bring something to eat and plenty to drink. It’s summer, and the beaches are calling your name. There will always be dangers out there.

But vigilance is key.

Drive carefully. Swim with a friend. If you see threatening skies, take cover. And don’t panic if a shark shows up. Stay safe, and enjoy the water.

letters More delays for delivery of new LIRR electric cars To the Editor: The most recent announced additional delays associated with the Long Island Rail Road’s $734 million procurement of 202 new M9 electric replacement cars — a contract originally awarded in 2013 — is nothing new. When has there ever been any MTA LIRR, Metro North or NYC Transit Federal Transit Administration or locally funded commuter rail or subway car procurement completed on time, within budget and without contract change orders?

Ongoing problems with this purchase have continued for years. In 2020, the MTA’s own independent engineering consultant forecast an October 2022 completion date. The LIRR was more optimistic about meeting an earlier date. Over time, both were proven wrong. The LIRR now promises that all 202 of the cars will be delivered by September 2023.

This new 17-month delay, on top of the previous ones, will result in the completion of all deliveries three years later than promised. And who can guarantee that the

he right-wing majority on the Supreme Court has now issued decisions overturning abortion rights, weakening the wall of separation between church and state, limiting state and local firearm regulation, and interfering with federal Environmental Protection Agency regulation of climate-altering, coal-burning power plants.

In a concurring opinion in the anti-abortion Dobbs decision, Justice Clarence Thomas laid out the goals of the right-wing judges.

According to ALAN Thomas, “In future cases, we SINGER should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents.” The right-wing group, including the three Trump appointees, seems determined to eliminate all protection for the personal right to intimacy and privacy and fundamental legal protections. This is the world of the dystopian novels “1984” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” — steps toward dismantling democracy and human rights and imposing the justices’ religious beliefs on the rest of the population.

When similar things happen in the Islamic world, the United States is quick to denounce Sharia law.

Blue states and the federal government must find ways to skirt the Supreme Court majority. Here are some suggestions.

■ Treat guns like cars. Cars are registered and inspected annually. Drivers are tested and licensed. Just as they do with cars and trucks, states and the federal gover nment should require that all gun owners be tested and licensed and insure their weapons, with steeper costs for automatic weapons and those that will be carried concealed in public places, and the highest cost for military-style weapons. Vehicles are taxed to support road maintenance and policing. Tax gun ownership as well.

Green economy ‘is still decades away’ To the Editor: To the surprise of many, the European Parliament gave final approval on July 6 to a new policy that will allow some nuclear and natural gas energy projects to qualify as “green” for access to low-interest loans and some state subsidies. The new law will include qualifying projects on the EU’s list of environmentally sustainable economic activities, those that

Meanwhile, neighboring states should sue the state governments and companies in bordering states for damaging their environments, and bill them for the medical expenses incurred by their citizens.

Public and private postal services, email, social media and the Internet can all be used to flood red states with the information women need to know.

Underground railroads will also have to work in reverse, sending pregnancy-ending medication, and possibly even birth control, into states that deny women reproductive freedom. Expect red states to pass new legislation outlawing all of these behaviors. Blue state governments will need to ignore these laws and protect their citizens from red state legal action, including refusing to extradite them.

Shoring up the wall of separation

between church and state will be difficult and meet local resistance, but it isn’t impossible. The Supreme Court ruled that government funds and programs provided to secular private schools cannot be denied to religious schools. The best way to block government subsidies of religious schools is to eliminate such subsidies, as well as vouchers, tuition remission, tax breaks, and direct aid, to all private schools.

This would also put a stop to the promotion of private schools to avoid school integration and the underfunding of public education.

Another strategy is to require that any schools that accept public funds fully comply with all civil rights diversity, equity and inclusion requirements, including the rights of members of the LGBTQ+ community.

It will not be easy to counter the rightwing, ideological Supreme Court majority that is attemting to rewrite the U.S. Constitution, but strategies like these can be employed until we have a new Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the U.S., the world’s most advanced country, has built neither a nuclear reactor nor a new oil refinery in over 50 years! Reality is finally setting in Europe as the fantasy of going totally green meets reality.

Without oil/gas, how do we power tens of thousands of commercial trucks, container ships, non-electric railroad lines, airplanes, helicopters, farm equipment?

How do we produce fertilizer, insecticides, lubricants, plastics, many chemicals and even clothing materials? The fact is, a totally green, renewable economy is still decades away. now if only the environmentalists and this administration would finally admit the truth and adjust to the reality of our current situation. We should and must follow the pragmatic leadership of the EU and seriously rethink our national energy policies.
