Anthony Price, a Uniondale resident who says he was fired from his job at a Westbury Starbucks after a confrontation with his manager, claims he’s actually being targeted because of his outspoken leadership in Workers United, the store’s union. Price led a number strikes in the months leading up to his firing.

Uniondale resident fired from Starbucks claims union-busting By BRANDON CRUZ bcruz@liherald.com

The past year seemed to be a good one for workers. On a national scale, part-time UPS employees got raises of up to 55 percent. Airline pilots saw 40 percent increases. And autoworkers negotiated a good bump in their pay along with other cost-of-living adjustments. In Nassau County, the Service Employees International Union won a slew of added benefits and a 19 percent pay increase for custodial workers here. But organized labor isn’t easy, something and Anthony Price says he’s paying a hefty price for. The Uniondale resident has spent months organizing his colleagues at a Starbucks in Westbury — part of a broader movement fight-

ing for better pay and conditions with the popular coffee chain. He even led multiple strikes in October and November. But by December, Price was unemployed. Price admits a confrontation with his shift manager during what he described as a frustrating work day a few weeks ago. When he was called into the office, he expected to have some documentation added to his record. He had never been in any kind of trouble before, and says he was, in fact, up for promotion. But instead, Price was let go. And he believes the decision to firing him came from corporate, and had more to do with his work with the union than what he considered an isolated outburst. “Anthony’s firing is part of a brutal and illegal union-busting campaign being waged by the company,” said Clara WheatleyContinUed on PAge 4
