For more than 20 years, the Seaford High School student government has coordinated its Thanksgiving food drive. Students, faculty and staff from the middle and high school donated non-perishables and funds to pay for perishable items. This year, the Seaford Manor Elementary School student council hosted a food drive of its own. and donated items to Island Harvest Food Bank.

Due to a technicality in the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, American Legions and Veterans of Foreign Wars organizations have been unable to receive monetary assistance from the federal government. ARPA took effect in March 2021, when the Trump administration’s Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act

expired. The $1.9 trillion stimulus bill was signed into law by President Biden to speed the country’s recovery from the economic effects of the coronavirus epidemic. Many veterans groups, however, are unable to obtain funds due to their tax-exempt status. While American Legions and Veterans of Foreign Wars chapters are listed as 501(c)(19) organizations, ARPA only cites benefits for 501(c)(3)’s. Those that do

not qualify include Seaford American Legion Post 1132 and Wantagh American Legion Post 1273. The original bill offered financial assistance, in the form of loans and grants, to small businesses and nonprofits, without specifying who qualified.
