WANTAGH NATIVE ANDREW Capobianco, who earned a silver medal in the men’s 3-meter synchronized springboard diving event at the Tokyo Olympics last month, was presented with a key to the town by Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin on Aug. 10.
Olympic diver Andrew Capobianco had the Wantagh and Seaford communities rooting for him as he earned a silver medal in the men’s 3-meter synchronized springboard event with partner Michael Hixon last month in Tokyo. Now, the 21-year-old has acquired another special token — one that represents his home town. More than 100 people gathered in front of Mandalay Elementary School in Wantagh — Capobianco’s alma mater — on
Aug. 10 to welcome him home. Capobianco came with his girlfriend, Anne Fowler, his parents, Darlene and Michael, his brothers, Matt and Christian, and his grandfather John Kilkenny and his wife Pat. “It’s overwhelming to see everyone here supporting me and cheering me on through this whole journey,” Andrew told the crowd. “Whenever someone asks me where my home is, I always say Wantagh, New York. I moved when I was 13, but throughout my whole journey, this is the place where I’ve gotten the most support, CONTINUED ON PAGE 4
Jones Beach concert to honor Sept. 11’s ‘fallen soldiers’ By STEPHANIE BANAT newsroom@liherald.com
Nearly 20 years have passed since the U.S. was shaken by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. This Saturday, the New York City-based nonprofit Tunnel to Towers Foundation will host a Never Forget Concert at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the attacks. “We have a beautiful, patriotic opening planned for the concert,” the foundation’s founder and CEO, Frank Siller, said. “We’re going to honor our fallen soldiers in a truly reverent way . . . and remember what hap-
pened on Sept. 11, and our many great heroes including my own brother, Stephen, who paid the ultimate sacrifice that day.” The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation was created in 2001 by Frank to honor his brother, Stephen, who was a member of the New York City Fire Department. Siller strapped some 60 pounds of gear to his back and ran two miles through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel (now the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel) to the twin towers, where he died in the effort to save others. The organization also honors the nation’s military and first responders. The Never Forget Concert
will begin at 7 p.m., and will feature performances by a variety of renowned artists and groups, including Journey, the Chainsmokers, the Steve Miller Band, John Fogerty (of Creedence Clearwater Revival), Ann Wilson (of Heart), Lee Brice, Wyclef Jean, Gavin DeGraw, “The Voice” contestant Wé McDonald, Lee Greenwood, Flo Rida, rapper Danny Rodriguez, “American Idol” contestant Jax and guitarist G.E. Smith, who will serve as musical director. There will also be a few surprise guests, Siller said. The tribute concert, sponsored by GMC, Home Depot Foundation and Verizon, will be
recorded and later broadcast on WAXQ/104.3 FM, select iHeart stations and on the iHeartRadio app on Sept. 11. A crowd of some 15,000 guests is expected, Tunnel to Towers Executive Vice President Matthew Mahoney said. The foundation has donated “thousands” of concert tickets to families associated with 9/11, first responders,
police officers, firefighters, military personnel and Gold Star families, Siller said. All proceeds will benefit the foundation, which provides mortgage-free homes to injured veterans, first responders and Gold Star families with young children, as part of its Smart Home Program.
