Frequently asked questions
March 7, 2019 — HERALD COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS — RED and BLUE
How did Red and Blue start?
When South Side High School’s Red and Blue was first organized in 1917, women weren’t allowed to vote in the United States, let alone compete in sports. As an alternative, it was created as a school competition exclusively for girls. It wasn’t until Title IX passed in 1972 that public schools finally allowed girls to participate in all the activities that boys could.
What activities do the girls compete in?
The Red and Blue teams roll out skits during the three-night event filled with props, costumes, singing and dance routines. Between the performances, the girls compete in various sports and relays, including volleyball, tug of war and floor hockey, among others.
Red Team Co-Captain Genna Kopelman, left, and Blue Team Co-Captain Winnie Chiffrille r are ready for this year’s competition.
Why is it called Red and Blue?
Isn’t it obvious!? Red and blue have been South Side High School’s colors for more than a century.
How are Red and Blue captains selected?
We can’t tell you that! The competition has its secrets.
What are the themes for this year’s performances?

oars, cheers and the clacking of tap shoes emanated from South Side High School’s gymnasium as the Red Team practiced on Feb. 26. Seniors Genna Kopelman and Lindsay Tighe, this year’s co-captains of the Red Team, stood in the midst of the energized frenzy as they watched their peers rehearse with pride.“Everyone has been practicing a lot and working so hard,” Tighe said. Kopelman noted that the girls practice between six to nine hours per week for six weeks. She expressed disbelief and excitement that her last Red and Blue was approaching in less than two weeks. As captains, she and Tighe chose coordinators for each of the five dances – disco, aerobics, tap and two jazz routines – and wrote the team’s skit, among other duties.“We make sure everything is in order and runs smoothly, and that everyone is happy and having fun,” Kopelman said. Tighe agreed, adding that the friendships, school spirit and healthy competition during the event bring the school together. “I’m confident we’ll look good,” she said.“But we don’t know what Blue will come out with. Of course, we hope it goes well for them, too.” n

Red and Blue:
Remains a heralded tradition in its 103rd year
By Scott Brinton sbrinton@liherald.com
1917 was a time of global turmoil. World War I raged, sending many parts of the planet into chaos. It was also a time of innovation. Albert Einstein published his first paper on cosmology, according to the worldhistoryproject.org, and illusionist Harry Houdini performed his famed buried-alive escape for the first time. The International Committee of the Red Cross won the Nobel Peace Prize. And William “Buffalo Bill” Cody died — and, with him, a significant piece of the Wild West. In what was then the pastoral Village of Rockville Centre, at South Side High School, a new tradition was born — one that, a century later, is still going strong: Red and Blue. That year it was known simply as Girls Sports Night, started on April 10 by Elsie Spelman, the first woman to serve on the Rockville Centre Board of Education. At the time, girls were supposed to be quiet and demure. Sports were not for them, society said. In fact, it was not until 1972 — 55 years later — that girls won the right to play sports alongside boys in high
school. That was the year Congress passed Title IX, prohibiting discrimination against girls in any school district that accepts federal funding. These days it’s understood that girls would play sports — as competitively and as fiercely as their male counterparts. Back in the day, however, many saw girls’ participation in athletic activities as unseemly. That is why Girls Sports Night was a really big deal. Rockville Centre was breaking with tradition, and in a real sense, the event was a first baby step towards helping girls achieve equality on the field of play. Girls Sports Night became Red and Blue — signifying the two teams participating in the event — in 1918. Girls put on skits and held races, all in the name of good fun. The event was an instant hit. Early on, it grew so popular that it had to be moved out of South Side High School into the local Masonic Hall, the only space around large enough to accommodate all of the participants. It was held there until 1924, when a new South Side High School (now South Side Middle School) was built on

Hillside Avenue. Originally, Red and Blue was only for junior and senior girls — no boys allowed. Eventually, though, freshmen and sophomore girls were permitted to join in, along with a limited number of boys (eight in all). They mainly act in ancillary roles. ganza that is a much-anticipated high point of the annual school calendar. There was once a banquet as part of the festivities, but that stopped in the 1980s. While the event’s basic structure has changed over the decades, Rockville Centre girls’ enthusiasm for Red and Blue has never waned. n

Reliving the 102nd Red and Blue Editor’s Note: This story was originally published on March 15, 2018. After a weekend of songs, sports and spirit, the Blue Team defeated the Red Team, 49-40, in South Side High School’s 102nd annual Red and Blue competition. The Blue Team, led by captains Katie Rosshirt and Zoe Roman, avenged last year’s loss to Red, winning its third competition in the last four years. The nearly all-female event began in 1917, at a time when girls were not allowed to play high school sports. “It was a tough competition, and the Red team was amazing, but Blue’s hard work totally paid off,” Roman said after the victory. “I loved making memories these past six weeks.” Rosshirt added that the Red captains, Elizabeth Preldakaj and Olivia Watterson, were friends of hers, and commended the team’s effort. “We were neck and neck,” Rosshirt said. “No one knew who would win. It was overwhelming in the best way possible. A Blue win with my best friend is the best feeling!” The long-running tradition kicked off on March 8 with a night of singing and art. The Red Team led, 6-3, before the school welcomed an even larger audience the following day, during which the teams presented their themes — “Legally BLUE” and “The HollyRED Dream” — to the hun-

the fair treatment of women, with Blue’s modeled after the film “Legally Blonde,” and Red’s telling the story of two actresses trying to make it in Hollywood. “Everyone should be paid their worth!” shouted Rosshirt and Roman at the end of their Friday performance, playing characters Elle Woods, from “Legally Blonde,” and Belle Blue, respectively. Blue’s dances featured the girls dressed like Woods and the red-headed orphan from “Annie,” as well as doctors in scrubs, Katniss Everdeen, from “The Hunger Games,” and even Wonder Woman. Blue’s setting was a courtroom, and the members were up against “Red Rock Entertainment,” which they defeated with thundering screams from their teammates in support of their mission for equality. “It was so much fun,” said Roman, who stood out of breath after the performance on Friday with her arm around Rosshirt. Red’s performance featured the girls dressed as flight attendants, fairies, limousine drivers, paparazzi and even Academy Awards decked out in gold. “Together we showed everyone girls can fight for fame!” Preldakaj and Watterson shouted at the end of their performance, playing actresses named Liz and Liv. The villain was John Blue, an unfair casting director in Hollywood. Overcoming Mr. Blue, Liz and Liv landed roles and won an Oscar, which
was played by one of their teammates, sparking laughter and applause from South Side’s packed gym. “It went beyond my expectations,” Preldakaj said. “I couldn’t have wished for a better squad,” Watterson added. Friday’s performances were followed by relay races and sports such as floor hockey. Blue took the lead, 31-15. “A lot of hard work went into this, and it paid off,” Blue Team member Harry Ludwig told the Herald at the end of the evening. Relays and other games, such as the superstar relay and volleyball, were part of Saturday night’s grand finale. While the Red Team won most of the physical activities on the final day, Blue hung on for the overall victory. Meghan O’Brien and Kim Pastore, directors of the competition, told the Herald that they were proud of all the girls. “They totally embodied sportsmanship and upheld it,” said O’Brien, who has helped out for the past two years. “We are awestruck!” added Pastore, a director for one year. “Red and Blue is a great thing for the school,” said former director Meaghan Healy, who oversaw the annual event for 20 years. “It’s not about who wins or loses. It’s about the journeys they go on with their teammates and friends.” n
