Restaurants brace for winter

As temperatures drop, outdoor dining will be limited

Unseasonably mild weather recently has allowed local restaurants to take further advantage of outdoor seating, but with winter weather looming, Rockville Centre restaurant owners are bracing for the challenge of losing what has become an important segment of their business during the pandemic.

George Korten, owner of George Martin the Original, a village fixture with an extensive menu, said he can seat up to 35 diners outdoors. Indoor capacity was limited to 50 percent by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in June, and Korten said he was concerned about losing the outdoor revenue.

“Those tables outside are like having another room,” he said.

“We’re hopeful some of that business will transition inside.

We have a very safe environment indoors and are doing all the right things.”

Korten said that under social distancing guidelines, patrons are not permitted to wait around the bar area and enjoy a drink while waiting for a table. In addition, he said, those who sit at the bar must order dinner to go with their drinks.

The restaurant, he said, is not generating enough money to pay employees on time or to give them enough hours. And using the apps cuts into the bottom line.

“We have to pay companies 30 percent on apps” like GrubHub and UberEats, he added. “We’re not making anything out

of it.”

Color of Spices now offers beer and wine for both diners and takeout orders, which it has never done before. That helps a little, Bisht said, and he hopes it will encourage more business.

“It’s a little tough to survive,” he said.

Chang also clarified that while the sixth-graders were all working remotely, only those deemed to be direct contacts needed to quarantine.

“If you are a direct contact,” he said, “you have different expectations in terms of quarantining versus the rest of the students being put on remote learning.” He added that those who are quarantining should not attend after-school activities.

School board President Tara Hackett asked what the protocols were for siblings of students who are direct contacts.

Chang said that they are not required to stay home because those are not positive cases. “It’s a contact of a contact,” he said.

“Therefore they’re allowed to come back to school.”

Hackett also clarified the protocols for siblings of students showing symptoms of Covid-19. “If one sibling has a fever,” she said, “the other sibling should not be in school until there is a negative test.”

“We are working very closely with our custodial staff, which I think has done a terrific job,” Bartels said, adding that

some of the night staff is working earlier, helping to clean high-touch areas while students are in school.

Board secretary Christine Ferazani brought up the new quarantining and testing protocols for New York state announced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo last week, and, in anticipation of holiday travel as well as the start of the travel soccer and lacrosse seasons, she asked that the district provide parents with those protocols as soon as possible. Trustee Liz Dion also asked whether students who have traveled out of state are able to switch to the remote schedule while quarantining, and Chang said that is what they should expect to do.

Information about procedures and protocols is on the district website, as is a “dashboard” listing current and past Covid-19 positive cases at each school building, with the newest cases highlighted. There have been a total of 10 cases since school started in September.

Chang urged the community to continue to take precautions outside school.

“What you do at home is extremely important, and it needs to be a continuum of the school hours and after-school hours,” he said. “What you’re doing in those outside activities will help us as we continue to move forward.”

For some, this will be the company’s first experience with building up an online brand and developing a new base for customers to interact.

Work From Home-Life Balance The United States and countries across the world implemented a work from home strategy.

Working remotely versus working from home are similar but have different connotations and duration.

The former was practiced to a certain extent as some business needs change and flow and how flexible employees can work. The latter is more of a new experience, a phenomenon that has remained long-term for the time being. It is difficult to establish such a balance as priorities have shifted because some people are at home working while taking care of personal obligations such as children, elderly, etc. For some, it is difficult to establish boundaries and priorities between business and personal obligations.

Balancing these obligations as well as individual mental health levels is a constant challenge.

One of the challenges is establishing a healthy work-life balance despite the two environments (home and work) reside in one location, the home. Balancing the environment to what business needs are required and what you can or must do to take care of loved one’s needs is a challenge in of itself for employees and employers alike.

With fatigue and low morale as an ongoing individual for employers and employees, it is important to stay connected. Zoom, Google Hangouts, Skype, and other video chat applications have been used in order to keep the team organized and in communication with one another. The probability for individuals to feeling burnt out is being reinforced by negative attitudes, feelings of hopelessness, and uncertainty.

Brull Foundation to host annual fundraiser bbonfiglio@liherald.com

The Tommy Brull Foundation, a Rockville Centre-based charity organization dedicated to serving those with special needs, will host a reimagined version of its 13th annual fundraiser on Nov. 14.

While the fundraiser — each year a gathering with food, live music and raffles — could not be held as usual due to Covid-19, Martin Brull, president of the Tommy Brull Foundation, said it was still important for him to raise money for local programs.

“We want to keep the momentum of what we’ve done,” Brull said. “We have so many organizations that we solely fund, and if we don’t commit to raising the money, these organizations don’t have funding.”

The event will be held in two parts — an in-person donation drop-off during the day and a virtual show in the evening.

The drive-by and drop-off fundraiser is from noon to 5 p.m. behind R.J. Daniels, where there will be contactless purchase of raffle tickets for prizes. People can go to the table at the rear entrance of the bar to drop off a check or cash and participate in any of the silent or Chinese auctions available. Brull has also been doing raffles leading up to the event via the Facebook page, “Tommy Brull Foundation Inc.” Then, there will be a live telethon on the Facebook page from 6 to 11 p.m. Peo-

ple can donate virtually during that time through the foundation’s Venmo, @tommy-brull. During the telethon, raffle prize winners will be announced and Brull will give out the Tommy Brull Courage and Resilience Award, as he does each year, to a person with special needs who has overcome challenges in their life.

As the Tommy Brull Foundation always incorporates music into what they do, the telethon will have local bands performing live, including The Blank Stairs, Animal Haus, Pat the Horse, Wolfie & Steve Desz, Slave to the Dog, Kirkland and Mayhem L.I. Also, musicians who have played at the foundation’s past Shine A Light music series concerts have sent in videos that will be played during the livestream.

The telethon will also feature short videos from people who volunteer with the foundation. “I do like that we’re going to be able to highlight people that help our organization,” Brull said, “that people don’t know about because that stuff happens behind the scenes, before and after the events.”

Town officials expand virus testing

For the next few weeks, essential workers can be tested for coronavirus for free, thanks to a new initiative launched by Town of Hempstead officials in collaboration with Northwell Health.

More than a dozen people attended a news conference last Friday outside the Stop & Shop on Atlantic Avenue in Baldwin, where officials announced the program, which is available to residents w h o l ive a n d work in the Town of Hempstead.

“Testing is a crucial part of the process to e n s u re p e o p l e are remaining safe, which is why it was a priDON CLAVIN ority of ours to Hempstead Town expand testing supervisor options for our essential workers,” said Town Supervisor Don Clavin, who was joined

by Council members Dorothy Goosby, Chris Carini and Tom Muscarella, as well as local essential workers and labor leaders. “They work to keep our community safe, so we must do the same for them.”

The initiative expands existing Covid-19 testing programs to include free polymerase chain reaction testing for essential workers, since they are the people who are consistently coming into contact with the public and putting their own lives at risk.

Polymerase chain reaction testing, officials explained, confirms whether the Covid-19 virus is active within the test recipient. Beginning Monday, testing was to be accessible in two locations: the Lakeview Fire Department at 891 Woodfield Road in West Hempstead and the Island Park court house at 127 Long Beach Road in Island Park.

Between Nov. 16 and 20, the two locations are the Oceanside Fire Department at 64 Foxhurst Road in Oceanside and the Island Park court house. Other locations are to be determined.

Northwell Health has staffed each location and made sure the facilities are properly cleaned before and after testing.

Made possible by CARES Act funding that U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer helped to secure, the program aims to eradicate the virus and keep essential workers and their families safe, officials said.

The town received a $133 million grant to alleviate some of the adverse effects of the pandemic.

“We have tested, already, through initiatives with Northwell, thousands of residents this year for this pandemic,” Clavin said. “This saved lives . . . It’s through testing that we will be able to

He recalled the early days of the pandemic, when, sitting in Town Hall, the only sounds he heard were those of ambulances transporting people to the hospital. Clavin said the town’s physician, who worked at NYU Winthrop Hospital (now NYU Langone), would return from all-night shifts at the packed hospital and report that some patients were placed on tables in the cafeteria.

“We’ve all seen loss and grief in this,” Clavin said. “We’ve seen it personally with our family members, our friends. I had staff members who passed away from coronavirus and others who got sick . . . We want to test as many peo-

ple as we can because we want everybody to be safe.”

Representatives of Transport Workers Union Local 252, Local 338, 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, Laborers 66, the Long Island Federation of Labor and the New York State Nurses Association also attended the news conference.

“In all my years in this labor movement, I’ve never been prouder of the labor movement, but in particular, my members, here today, who are the frontline workers who went out every day and gave a certain semblance of normalcy to all of your families,” said John Durso, president of Local 338 and president of the Long Island Federation of

Labor, AFL-CIO. All of the Baldwin Stop & Shop employees, with the exception of those in the meat department, are members of Local 338.

“These ladies and gentlemen that are behind us today, there [are] never enough ‘thank-yous’ to them for all of the work and the sacrifices that they have done,” Durso said. “They have left their families to go out and protect us, in every aspect of our lives. We owe them all a great deal of gratitude.”

“As a former union representative myself, I understand the great importance that organized labor brings to the working class,” Carini said, “so thank you for advocating for your membership while they went through this. Thank you for being on the front lines and for fighting for your workers’ rights.”

Clavin said all essential workers are encouraged to use the testing services to keep themselves and their communities safe by preventing the spread of Covid19. The list of eligible essential workers includes, but is not limited to, those working in grocery stores, pharmacies, schools, nursing homes and health care.

At press time Tuesday, former Vice President Joe Biden had tallied over 75 million votes — more than any other presidential candidate in history — besting President Donald Trump’s 70 million-plus votes, the second most in history.

Only two states remained to be decided, Georgia and North Carolina, according to the Associated Press. The outcome of either, however, would not affect the overall outcome of the election.

Biden had 290 electoral votes secured, the AP was reporting. If he were to win Georgia — an increasingly likely outcome — he would end the election with 306 electoral votes. A candidate needs 270 to win the presidency.

Robert Ledlie of South Village in Rockville Centre said that he and his wife, Susan, are not generally political people, but while awaiting the results, they got “caught up in the moment” and Susan made a sign that said, “We’re Biden our time” and put it on their front porch.

When the announcement came on Saturday afternoon of Biden’s likely win, she made a second sign: “Good things come to Joes who wait.”

Hearing the news, Robert said,

“We felt relieved, like a burden had been lifted from our shoulders,” he said. “I just feel lighter and am very pleased with the results.

The Ledlies spend a lot of time on their front porch, and having the signs has opened up conversations with both neighbors and passersby over the past few days, Robert said.

Rockville Centre resident Jamie Jordan, founder of the Facebook group Indivisible Nassau County, which she formed the day after Trump won the 2016 election, said she was happy to see Biden win. “I feel like we pulled America back from the brink of fascism,” she said, noting that she felt relieved and celebrated for two days before the reality sunk in. “I’ve pivoted to a mission of wanting to heal the nation.”

“My two goals for the next 12 months will be trying to heal the nation —starting with the rifts on my own block -— and reorganizing the Democratic party on a local level. It needs to look within. I don’t want my children to live in a world like this. I want to see less division and we need to work hard to reach across the divide.

“I’m excited to celebrate the win,” she added, “but I’m not interested in gloating. I want to see the two sides come together.”

This past year alone presented us with unforeseen challenges that will ripple through our society for decades to come. Through it all, the Rockville Centre Public Schools remain an anchor of stability and excellence. At the heart of this consistency lies a faculty that is equal parts professional, caring and talented. I am both proud and humbled to count myself as a teacher in our district.

I graduated South Side High School in 1987 before pursuing a liberal arts degree in psychology. Few peers were as well prepared for the rigors of academia as I was upon leaving our schools. I studied for a master’s degree in education because of the faculty at South Side that had nurtured and encouraged my academic interests. So many teachers and coaches were there for me - I, too, hoped to serve in that role for young people. After graduate school and fourteen years at a neighboring district, I excitedly returned to teach social studies at my alma mater two decades after graduating. Much

had changed in my life in between– marriage, home ownership and fatherhood among them. Reassuring, however, was the continued excellence I found upon joining the ranks of the Cyclones once again. The names had changed as well, but the pursuit of academic rigor had not. I work with and among some of the most talented and dedicated professionals that I have encountered in twentyseven years as an educator. As a resident, I’m equally thrilled that these men and women now serve as mentors to my own two teenaged boys.

This year has made the future seem more uncertain than ever. So much in our lives has been thrown into doubt. It is reassuring to know that our schools are there to provide stability and clarity to our children. Our faculty will guide them through these toughest of times, preparing them to meet the challenges that lay ahead. Each day I look forward forging a stronger future while maintaining the legacy of a gifted faculty that has been the long-standing hallmark of the Rockville Centre Public Schools.

eing away from bedside nursing for six and a half years to have kids and raise a family came to a halt when the nursing shortage during the pandemic became a reality, and compelled me to act.

Considering becoming a new school nurse presented me with an opportune time to step up and make a difference in the community.

I recognized early on that I was now serving as a crucial part on the front lines in keeping our students, school and our community at large safe and healthy.

Although presented with challenges, such as mask wearing, social distancing, cleaning and sanitizing protocols and screenings, this job has been an enriching one. Furthermore, working in a team-oriented environment under the leadership of [the school district’s Director of Health Services and Athletics] Ed Ramirez and with the guidance of Sherrylyn Waldron, RN and Christine Van Ness, HA, this has been nothing less than fulfilling and pleasurable.

Knowing you can make a difference is rewarding, and it is my absolute joy and privilege to serve in the Baldwin School District, of which I am a proud resident.

t the beginning of the pandemic, we were all nervous and scared. I had never seen anything like this in my 20-plus years as a respiratory therapist.

In the first months, I had 28 residents with Covid under my care, and the center had about 100 overall.

We were all fully equipped with PPE. We had masks, face shields and haz-mat suits, and we sectioned off a part of the center solely for those who had Covid.

It almost felt like going to war, where we would suit up and do the best we could for our patients. And we were working with a lot of disposable equipment that we had to constantly open and dispose of to make sure things were safe and sanitary.

I was very proud of my team for helping our patients through this. It was physically and mentally challenging, but we made it to the point where we’ve been Covid-free for the past seven months.

It’s been hard on our residents because seniors are among the most susceptible to Covid, so they couldn’t have any visitors, and they couldn’t really leave their rooms. But we wanted to occupy them so that they weren’t just stuck watching TV and getting more and more worried.

We had activities every day in the hallways that they could join from their doors. We were like a well-oiled machine, doing everything we could for our patients.

M

y mother, Mary Curatolo, has always been a great influence on my life. She always told me that in life, it is important to give back.

My mom lives with us now, and she still reminds me about giving back.

I had been involved with charity all of my adult life. But by the time I had my second child, I was out of things. I decided to get back, and three years ago, I became president of the Kiwanis Club of Long Beach. But as of this year, I am now secretary of the club.

This fall, we just completed a drive in which we collected $2,000, and we were able to supply 27 Long Beach school children — 24 in grades kindergarten to five and the others in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades — with loads of school supplies.

We were able to supply the kids with binders, books, crayons, pencils and pens. We worked with the school social workers and asked them what the kids needed. We only bought the items they told us the kids needed. These are kids who are economically disadvantaged, and some are homeless. We have been doing this program for three years now, and this has been our most successful year in terms of fundraising.

There’s always a need for kids to have supplies, and I am sure we will do it next year too. We at Kiwanis are always busy. We are already planning food drives for the Long Beach soup kitchen. Because of Covid this year, we will be setting up food boxes outside of supermarkets, asking people to donate.

he task of running the operations for the 9-11 EMS and emergency management is challenge in itself, but during Covid-19, it was breaking new ground.

With more than 40 years of experience in these two fields, I have never been busier. I had to scramble to find personal protective equipment and other supplies for our staff from many sources, modify existing plans for the expansion of a designated isolation area large enough to accommodate the surge of Covid-positive or suspected for our facility.

We set up tents for a front triage and screening area, created a system for education and dissemination of the information we had on Covid, dealt with the decontamination issues for the Emergency Department and the EMS units, mitigated efforts to prevent the spread of the virus in the hospital, modified several areas of the facility to increase the number of intensive care unit and medical beds and also modified our mass fatality management plan to accommodate the increasing number of decedents and the proper transfer to funeral directors or medical examiners.

I had to participate in five daily conference calls with related agency partners, such as the New York City Emergency Management Office, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the Greater New York Hospital Association, the Department of Health, the Brooklyn Coalition for Emergency Management and for the Network of our sister facilities.

John Russell, Honorary RVCFD Chief, dies at 86 John A. Russell, Sr., known as “Jake” to friends and family, died on Nov. 3, 2020 in Fort Pierce, FL. Jake is predeceased by Carol, his wife of 53 years and his sisters Pat and Barbara.

Jake is survived by his brother Bill; his children Terri, Patti, Sue, John, and Scott and their spouses and partners; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and his dear friend Margy.

Bor n to Bill and Vera Russell on Sept. 29, 1934, Jake grew up in Rockville Centre. After graduating from South Side High School, he proudly served in the Army during the Korean War. A proprietor of “The Place” Bar and Restaurant in Rockville Centre for

A service in memory of Jake was held on Monday, Nov. 9, 2020 at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Fort Pierce. Donations in his memory may be made to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Carol Russell Tribute Fund, or to Treasure Coast Hospice of Florida.

Q. I’m buying a sunroom for my breakfast room on the back of my split-level house, about 8 feet off the ground. I’m being told by the contractor that I need an architect and sealed plans. Since it’s basically a kit of parts that will go on my existing deck, why do I need this? It seems like a lot of extra expense the sunroom people didn’t tell me about. If I already have a permit for the deck, it should be Ask The allowed, right? I haven’t bought the sunroom yet. I’m Architect just trying to be sure I know the whole story before I do this, probably by spring, when the weather is better for construction. Any advice would be helpful.

A. Do things once, the best way. A deck isn’t habitable, but a sunroom is, onte eeper and a permit is required.

Plans have to show structural support, energy and building code compliance. Rain, moisture and ice are your primary concerns.

You need the whole story without the sales part.

Just like any purchase, issues you might not expect are still important, like finding out what kind of oil to add to your snow blower before the engine seizes or that windows without factory tinting can allow ultra-violet sunlight rays to fade your carpet. As an architect for a largely popular sunroom manufacturer in the 1980s and ’90s, I experienced many issues with their construction.

Pre-engineered panel systems are designed by the company, hopefully by engineers, and should come with plans, from the manufacturer, that can be sealed and signed by their in-house engineer. If not, plans may need to be drawn from scratch by an architect or engineer that you hire so those plans can be integrated with your house. Integrated means that the company generally just sells you a product and doesn’t necessarily give any indication of how to support the unit or how to attach the unit system to your house so that it won’t leak or move.

This is the general failing of the system, since, as I experienced with most of the installations, the part I could detail was free of leaking or movement, but the units themselves leaked nearly every time.

We could detail how the edges of the unit could be sealed and redundantly weather-stripped and flashed, but the frames around the glass and wall edges would unseal and leak. I even met with the corporate president/owner and identified the specific problems. Promises to correct leak issues were made but not kept, and eventually I gave up.

I looked at a two-year-old system while discussing other work for a home recently. The owner described the back-and-forth misery he and his family were experiencing with their sunroom and the company. Even 25 years after I gave up, the same company is still doing things the same way.

You need a detail-oriented architect and installer, even if you think you don’t. The cost of doing things twice is much greater. Good luck.

e offer sincere congratulations to former Vice President Joe Biden for winning the presidency last week, at 77, the oldest man ever elected to the nation’s highest office. With him, U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris was elected the first woman — and the first Black and Indian American — vice president. The vote totals were also historic: Biden received the most votes of any presidential candidate ever, over 75 million. President Trump had the second-most, with over 71 million.

At press time Monday, the Associated Press had called all but two states — Georgia and North Carolina. Biden led Trump in Georgia, and North Carolina was expected to go to Trump. Biden had 290 Electoral College votes, 20 more than are needed to win the presidency. If he were to win Georgia, he would extend his total to 306, a clear mandate.

Biden should feel a deep sense of pride in the race that he ran. He conducted a clean campaign that respected the health and safety of voters during the coronavirus pandemic. When Trump attempted to stir controversy during the first chaotic presidential debate on Sept. 30 by raising questions about Biden’s son Hunter — while the former vice president was speaking about his dead son, Beau — he did not take the bait. He did not engage Trump in the ugly war of words that the president sought.

Biden could easily have made hay about nepotism in the Trump administration.

After all, Trump gave top jobs to his daughter, Ivanka, and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, both of whom have continued to engage in their daily business activities while working at the White House, creating any number of potential conflicts of interest. For that matter, the Trump Organization has carried on its dealings even

ew York state held its first early vote in 2019, and voter participation shot up nearly 45 percent statewide compared with 2015, according to Vote Early New York. Last year, Nassau County, which had double the required number of early-voting sites, had the highest early-voting turnout in the state. In all, some 256,251 people voted early in New York.

At the same time, 1.1 million sent in absentee ballots. Before Election Day, some 3.3 million people had already voted in New York.

There’s no doubt that the contentious nature of this historic presidential race drove people to vote, either early at the polls, by absentee ballot or in person on Election Day. But without early and absentee voting, we have to wonder whether turnout would have been as high as it was.

We doubt it.

Clearly, New York is on to something with early and absentee voting. That’s why we must not only continue to offer these options in the future, but also expand on them. Nassau County had 15 early-voting sites this year, while Suffolk had 12. Only one of the Nassau sites was on the North Shore, in Roslyn Heights. Clearly, the North Shore needs more sites — but it should not receive them at the expense of

while the president has been in office.

Yes, Biden could have made much of all that, escalating the rhetoric in what could have been a terrible tit-for-tat game with the president. But he didn’t. He left Trump’s kids alone, while proudly defending his own.

In doing so, Biden showed his fundamental decency, his respect for the moral codes that we expect a president to abide by. He campaigned hard, but he never lost his sense of self-respect by engaging in the kind of scorched-earth tactics that got Trump elected in 2016. Biden ran a principled campaign, most notably in his socially distanced approach to reaching people through Zoom sessions and car rallies — and he always wore a mask. In other words, Biden set an example for all of us to follow.

And that, in part, is why he is our president-elect.

LETTERS Thank you, South Shore voters To the Editor: Thank you to the voters of the South Shore for overwhelmingly re-electing me to the State Senate. This election cycle saw record turnout all across Long Island, and the whole country, and it is an honor to have the opportunity to continue representing our communities.

We have taken on many challenges since I came into office.

Since I’ve been entrusted with serving our community, we’ve taken on corruption in Albany, stopped tax hikes, banned guns from our classrooms, funded our towns and schools, and passed New York’s ambitious blueprint to tackle climate change.

There is still so much work to be done, especially in the midst of the ongoing pandemic and economic recovery. I look forward to getting to work on behalf of all voters to achieve more prosper-

Too many people had to wait too long to vote, which some would argue is a form of voter suppression. You simply shouldn’t have to wait an hour to vote, let alone three hours or longer. The Nassau County Board of Elections should begin planning additional sites.

That would require funding, because elections require paid poll workers. Coming by such funding will not be easy if the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic drags on. Nonetheless, the county should be taking a hard look at expanding early voting — if not now, then in the near future.

cene 1: The butcher at the local food store turned to face me from behind the counter. I noticed his mask in the below-the-nose position. I gave him my food order, and calmly asked him to wear his mask appropriately.

He thanked me for reminding him, and we bade each other a good day.

Scene 2: Same food store, same day. A customer ahead of me was checking out, paying the cashier. I assumed my spot, six feet behind, on the assigned, socially distanced color blob on the floor. A shopping cart coming from my left ERIC C. appeared in front LAST of me and assumed the position between me and the customer checking out.

“Excuse me,” I said, intentionally calm and non-threatening. The customer looked at me, his mask in the below-the-chin position. I told him I was waiting on line and asked that he not cut in front of me. He

wasn’t pleased, called me “an ass,” but went to the next checkout line.

“May I also ask you to wear your mask the right way?” I said, still calm, nonthreatening, non-judgmental.

“No, I won’t. I won’t be an ass like you.”

I asked, “Out of curiosity, why do you feel so strongly about not wearing the mask?”

Now threatening, he yelled, “Because you’re an ass, and you better not ask again or we’ll really have a problem! Are you looking for a problem?”

No, I wasn’t looking for a problem. I was looking for chicken. But I felt an obligation to say something when my safety, and that of those around me, was threatened.

After paying for my groceries, while my fellow shopper (still with mask concealing only his Adam’s apple) finished checking out, I spoke with the store managers. I told them what happened at the butcher counter and in the checkout line. I told them that although I was a regular customer, I’d find it hard to return to a store where the safety of cus-

tomers and staff is put in jeopardy by fellow customers and staff.

The managers lamented their plight, talking about the difficulty they faced enforcing the mask rules and the verbal, and sometimes physical, threats they and their employees have had to endure. They apologized for the behavior of their butcher, qualified by, “The staff is almost always good about masking.” And they spoke of the difficulty of enforcing mask rules among shoppers, and the awful choice their cashiers have to make regularly: risk a confrontation with a mask-deficient customer, or risk exposure to the coronavirus.

I expressed my understanding of the awful situation store owners and employees are in, a situation they never sought.

But I also expressed my passion about the issue. Because I’m a customer, a citizen, a husband, a parent. And I’m a physician, practicing primary care internal medicine in this community for over 30 years. We’ve lost patients to Covid-19,

It’s caring for others. It’s setting an example.

LETTERS ous communities, honest government and a cleaner environment. The road ahead will be tough, but we’ll get through it together.

Now is a time to come together, heal divisions and do the hard work to make real change for our communities and families.

Water takeover should be rejected To the Editor: Liberty Utilities and New York American Water signed an agreement for Liberty to purchase American Water for a whopping $608 million. Why, you may ask, would anyone pay $608 million for a water system, 40 percent of which was sold for $71 million a little over eight years ago? Because NYAW gifted its shareholders with a 204 percent return on its investment — while charging its customers 10 times more than what our neighbors with municipal water pay.

We urge NYAW ratepayers to join us in urging the Public Service Commission to reject this private acquisition and, instead, to support a public takeover of our most basic necessity — the water that runs freely under our feet. Water is a basic human right, one that should have local control, with local accountability.

Knowing that there are plans under way to take back the water that is rightfully ours, Governor Cuomo gave the PSC until April 1 to distinguish between utility and customerowned assets if the state were to revoke American Water’s license to operate in New York

What have we become? We threaten those who request that others in our presence follow simple guidance that could save another’s life? In a pre-Covid time, had I been wearing an Islanders T-shirt and my fellow shopper, a Rangers T-shirt, would I have been threatened for my team partisanship?

It’s simple. It’s not political. It’s caring for others. It’s setting an example for others. It’s making a tiny sacrifice to potentially protect another human being. It’s pushing back against an ideology that questions science to foster political goals.

It’s following the simplest guidance there is: Treat others as you’d want to be treated yourself.

We owe one another nothing less.

Keep masking up, New York To the Editor: As we continue to fight Covid-19, it is clear that masks help stop the spread of the virus and save lives. Drawing from the diversity and creativity that New York’s fashion industry is famous for, these masks will benefit Covid-19 relief efforts and remind the public that we all still need to “mask up.”

The Peace Corps, a history of spirited engagement

urrounded by thousands of adoring supporters, many sporting red MAGA caps, President Trump sauntered into a victory rally in Cincinnati on Dec. 1, 2016, three and a half weeks after his election, and laid out the Trump Doctrine.

“You hear a lot of talk about how we’re becoming a globalized world,” he bellowed to the chanting and screaming crowd, “but the relationships people value in this country are local: family, city, state, country.

They’re local.

There’s no global anthem, no global currency, no certifiSCOTT cate of global citiBRINTON zenship. We pledge allegiance to one flag, and that flag is the American flag.”

So ends “A Towering Task: The Story of the Peace Corps,” a 2019 documentary directed, edited and produced by Alana DeJoseph, who served as a small enterprise development Peace Corps volunteer in a tiny village in Mali, West Africa, from 1992 to 1994. The film, with historical footage and interviews with former and current volunteers and world leaders, most notably former President Jimmy Carter, tells the nearly 60-year history of the federal agency devoted to fostering world peace.

described as her “baby,” only weeks before Trump lost his re-election bid. It was a nervous time for many. Would the United States again elect an unabashed nationalist as president and continue on its lonely path toward global disengagement, closing borders, frayed alliances and the shredding of hard-fought international treaties, or would it choose another path, one of reengagement — one that seeks to build friendships rather than divide and conquer?

This was the question with which DeJoseph chose to end “A Towering Task,” The answer would, potentially, determine the Peace Corps’ future.

I was particularly interested in the film because I served in Peace Corps, in Bulgaria, from 1991 to 1993. I was among the first two dozen volunteers — and Americans, period — to enter the country after the fall of communism only a year earlier. It was a time of great trepidation — many wondered whether democracy would take hold for good in Eastern Europe after mass protests had toppled one hardline regime after another — and a time of great hope — millions of Eastern Europeans cheered the opening of the former Soviet bloc to the West.

As an American who wore jeans and sweatshirts and spoke with a New York accent, I was something of a local celebrity in Veliko Turnovo, the ancient city in cen-

tral Bulgaria where I served. I cannot express in words the sense of optimism I felt at the time. You believed, if only for a short time, that world peace was perhaps at hand.

As one of the globalists whom Trump has decried for the past four-plus years, I feared his presidency, and I wasn’t unwarranted in my concern. In June 2017, Trump withdrew from the 2015 Paris Agreement to limit greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Then, in 2018, he backed out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, known formally as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, signed by Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States — to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear bomb, at least for the foreseeable future. I could go on, but this column isn’t about Trump. It’s about “A Towering Task.”

As “A Towering Task” makes clear, each Peace Corps volunteer is an ambassador of goodwill, a friendly face who becomes deeply embedded in the local society and culture, and whose contributions become the stuff of local conversation for years to follow.

Creating the Peace Corps in the 1960s was indeed a monumental undertaking by President John F. Kennedy and the agency’s first director, Sargent Shriver — Kennedy’s brother-in-law and the father of broadcaster Maria Shriver. The film, narrated by Academy Award-nominated actress Annette Bening, does a masterful job of telling the early story of the Peace Corps and the political fray that its formation stirred, after which it meticulously chronicles the agency’s history, decade by decade, with panoramic footage from Peace Corps countries around the globe, showing both natural wonders and human suffering.

Dog days of the 2020 pandemic election

s we go to press, Major and Champ are heading to the White House. Apparently, Joe and Jill Biden will be moving in, too, on Inauguration Day, but the big news is that dogs are back in the people’s house. This dog whistle is sweet: the presence of the Bidens’ two German shepherds speaks to the humanity of their owners.

Also at press time, the current occupant of the White House has not yet conceded RANDI the election and is KREISS launching lawsuits like North Korean missiles. They seem just as likely to plummet into oblivion.

This traumatic election of 2020 unfolds in the midst of a catastrophic pandemic, with more than 100,000 people a day getting infected with Covid-19. The entire election experience, not to mention the past four years, has been an unraveling of norms.

The pollsters suggesting a big “blue wave” couldn’t have been more wrong.

Basically they were telling us the earth

was flat and we nearly sailed over the edge.

There was no such wave. It seems as if every person who voted for President Trump last time voted for him again. His supporters are still believers, which speaks to our great national divide.

The voting went smoothly, but the counting has been excruciatingly slow. At press time, Joe Biden is the president-elect, but there are recounts ahead for Senate seats. We will have a new government in a couple of months. Probably.

In this time of uncertainty, what can we know and count on for sure, no matter what? What is your life preserver? With my kids far away, my grandkids disembodied voices on the phone and friends scattered to their personal pods, my lifesaver has been my dog, Lillybee. I know she is my husband’s comfort as well. That is not to take away from us as a couple, but Lillybee is another category of loving companion.

As it turns out, dogs can save us from ourselves, from the pain of isolation and the tension of being inside and outside bubbles. I’m sure you know as many people as I do who’ve become first-time dog

owners since the onset of the pandemic.

According to what I’ve read, the demand for dogs far exceeds the supply.

Animal shelters, private breeders and pet stores are reporting unprecedented demand. People are hiring people to fly new puppies to them. Some shelters are reporting dozens of applications for individual dogs. Some breeders are reporting waiting lists well into 2021.

Dogs fill the void created by lost jobs and lost school days and lost opportunities to socialize. As people realize the pandemic won’t be over anytime soon, they’re changing travel and spending habits. They’re longing for emotional connection, and that’s where dogs do what they have always done: give special meaning to life. All the clichés of unconditional love and friendship are true.

Of course, shelter directors are hoping that people remain as faithful to their dogs as the dogs are to them. When the pandemic ends and political life calms down and people go back to school and work, dogs will still need their people for food and companionship and love.

great life. Everyone is home! There’s always someone to play with. There will be a big adjustment for dogs and humans alike when pandemic restrictions are lifted.

I’ve noticed that Lillybee is increasingly attached, following us from room to room, and also more anxious, picking up on our vibes. I took her to the puppy park yesterday and, like a toddler in preschool, she sat behind my legs and wouldn’t play with the other kids. When we get our mojo back, I expect she will, too.

It’s a sign of our national health and well-being that Major and Champ will be moving in to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. On a personal note, I’m relieved that they’ll be bringing Joe and Jill.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Mary Oliver, author of the collection “Dog Songs,” wrote this tribute: Because of the dog’s joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?
