As midnight approached on election night, Republicans in Nassau County-wide races were inching toward a GOP sweep.

As the Herald went to press, Bruce Blakeman, the Republican Town of Hempstead councilman, had surged past incumbent Democrat Laura Curran in the race for county executive, with 92 percent of precincts reporting. At press time, an official winner had not been declared, but Blakeman had 52 percent of the vote to Curran’s 48 percent. Close to 20,000 absentee ballots remained to be counted, however.

Bishop John Barres will celebrate a Mass dedicated to health care professionals on Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes Cathedral.

During the gathering, he will give thanks and pray for all medical personnel across Long Island and around the world.

“The cross of the Covid-19 pandemic continues to challenge health care professionals in so many ways,” Barres said, according to a news release “Yet I am heartened and inspired to see our health care workers carrying out their duties and responsibilities for the many people who are suffering on Long Island.”

Masses for health care professionals are special opportunities to ask God’s blessings for all those serving in the health care field — doctors, nurses, medical technicians, hospital administrators, emergency personnel and every dimension of staff service provided. The church leaders offer prayers for the safety and well being of all health care workers and the people they serve, and will remember and pray for the souls of all health care professionals who have died.

Teachers’ Association president takes aim at school board

By MIKE SMOLLINS At the Oct. 21 meeting of the Rockville Centre Board of Education, RVC Teachers’ Association President Frank Van Zant criticized the school board for its handling of several situations to start the school year.

Van Zant has been vocally critical of the school board after it voted, 3-2, not to re-hire Long Island high school girls’ soccer Coach of the Year Jennifer Abgarian, and varsity assistant coach Chris Aloisi in July. Since then, Abgarian’s replacement, Jude Massillon, resigned from the coaching position after he received what he described as anonymous “racially derogatory” messages (Massillon is Black). He was replaced by longtime former coach Judi Croutier.

Van Zant said the distractions have kept board from fostering a positive attitude in the district, and has hurt teachers’ ability to plan, and now the board is tasked with finding a new superintendent after June Chang announced his resignation, effective Nov. 19.

“The truth is that in July and August, we could have been planning productively, ahead of time, and without multitasking,” he said. “Instead, we were fighting over soccer coaches. What a waste of time and taxpayer dollars for us to be in arbitration over the soccer coaches. A school board member has a personal disappointment and full vengeance is enacted by the triumvirate. The “triumvirate” Van Zant was alluding to appeared to be Board President John O’Shea, Vice President Christine Ferazani and Trustee Erica Messier, each of whom voted against rehiring the soccer coaches despite the recommendation of Chang and Carol Roseto, the district’s director of physical education, health and athletics.

The board did not respond after Van Zant spoke for about three minutes at the meeting. Reached by phone on Monday, O’Shea said he would address each of Van Zant’s comments publicly at the Nov. 16 board meeting.

“That was our first board meeting of really getting back to whatever normal is for us now,” he said. “It was very positive, highlighted the kids, talked about improving the programs and then it became all negative. It was upsetting for people to hear that at the end of the board meeting.

Certain issues are board responsibilities, but certain issues are the administrations’ issues, but it was put on the pile on the board’s back. My plan is to explain it at the next regular board meeting.”

Van Zant said the many issues surrounding the district over the first few months of the school year may make it dif-

ficult for the board to hire a new superintendent after Chang leaves. Robert Bartels, who has been the district’s assistant superintendent for business and personnel for two decades, will serve as acting superintendent for the rest of the school year as the board searches for Chang’s permanent successor.

“On school board reconigition weeek, we teachers of Rockville Centre recognize that the triumvirate board is arrogantly disdainful,” Van Zant said. “. . . You are creating chaos, not quality. You are creating angst, not excellence. I suggest that the path to excellence is through your educational leadership., the excellent people you invested in and not, as it has been since July, through a tin-pot dictatorship.”

Chang announced his decision to step down in a letter to the board on Aug. 11, just over a year after he signed a five-year contract to serve as superintendent. His resignation was to become effective May 11, 2022, but under the latest agreement, his term will end on Nov. 19. A Herald Freedom of Information Law request for copies of the original and amended agreement between Chang and school officials is still pending.

While Chang did not publicly disclose his reasons for leaving, he faced much adversity after taking over for Dr. William Johnson, who had served as superintendent for 34 years before retiring in 2019.

Chang had to navigate the district through the coronavirus pandemic in his first year on the job, and deal with the ongoing controversy over masking district students and the soccer coach controversy.

RVC American Legion hosts Law & Order Night

On Friday, American Legion Post 303 honored Rockville Centre first responders on Law and Order Night at their headquarters on Maple Avenue.

“Our post takes great pleasure in honoring our law enforcement and emergency personnel for their continued dedication and service to the Rockville Centre community,” Legion Post 303 member Paul Casazza said. “They are serving and protecting us on a daily basis.”

Casazza said that Law and Order Night is a program that highlights the legion’s promotion of “Americanism,” the Constitution, and the second amendment.

Rockville Centre Police Department Sgt. Paul Kaplon was presented with an engraved .45 caliber Derringer pistol donated by Bond Arms and a Day at the Range certificate donated by Dark Storm Industries by RVC Police Commissioner Jim Vafaedes.

“It’s humbling,” Kaplon said of the ceremony. “It’s a great community and department, so that makes my job a lot easier.” Kaplon, a Smithtown native, is also a veteran of the Marines, serving as an infantry rifleman from 2003 to 2007. He joined the RVC department in 2009 and was the 2013 Cop of the Year for RVC. RVC Firefighter and Oceanside resident Honorary Chief Edward C. Simpson

was presented with an engraved axe by Chief of Department James Avondet.

Simpson grew up in the village and has devoted himself to the department since 1971. “I am truly honored that my company thought that much of my participation over the 50 years of service and all the committees that I was in,” Simpson said.

Simpson acts as chairman of the committee that oversees the maintenance of the 1937 vehicle and the training of new operators.

RVC EMT Capt. David Schowerer received a plaque thanking him for his volunteer service in the community.

Schowerer was praised as a leader and a friend by his fellow EMT workers.

In South Side’s storied girls’ soccer history, never before had it reached the Nassau County championship stage with as young a roster as it did this fall.

And with six sophomores in their starting lineup, the top-seeded Cyclones made it back-to-back county titles with a 2-0 victory over No. 5 Manhasset on Tuesday night at Cold Spring Harbor High School.

Overtime was less than 10 minutes away when senior Emma Madden scored the eventual game-winning goal for South Side (12-3-2), which won its 28th Nassau crown and advanced to meet East Islip in the Long Island Class A championship/ Southeast Regional Final this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Shoreham-Wading River High School.

Sophomore Nora Basile added an insurance marker with 3:22 remaining following a free kick by sophomore Kayla Hubler, who assisted on both goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Avery Testa made 3 saves, all from close range, for her second shutout of the playoffs.

“It feels amazing to win another county championship and to play such a big part in it,” Hubler said. “We knew if we kept the pressure on good things would

happen. I knew we had the fire in us.”

Manhasset junior Alexis Lin, the only goalkeeper to blank South Side all season when the teams battled to a scoreless draw Oct. 15, was busy throughout and made 10 saves with her best coming against a relentless Anna Pennecke, one of the Cyclones’ four senior starters who scored the decisive goal in their 2-1 semifinal win over No. 3 Garden City last Saturday.

“We talked about playing a full 80 minutes and I don’t think overtime was on anyone’s mind,” said South Side coach Judi Croutier, who returned this fall after guiding the team to eight county and L.I. titles from 2002-2009. “It was great to see the girls grow as a team and jell,” she added. “They learned to trust each other and work together, and they meshed at the right time.”

The Cyclones, behind a defense led by senior Christina LiCalzi and sophomores Hubler, Morgan Harloff and Charely Doreste, allowed just four goals in four postseason games.

“We’ve worked extremely hard and I’m so proud of everyone on this team,” senior Emma Hospodka said. “We came into tonight confident but we knew it would be a hard-fought game. We didn’t score until the end but I never had a doubt it my mind we’d find a way.”

A Halloween hoot at United Church

Halloween highjinks was afoot at United Church in Rockville Centre on Sunday as it played host to an event that embodied the spirit of the holiday.

Parishioners, staff members, religious leaders and children gathered outside the church for the celebration. Children were given candy and other treats, while the Rev. Scott Ressman and many others got into the Halloween spirit by carving jack‘o-lanterns.

Tom Hodge made it extra special for the children, dressing as a large bear and greeting them as they trick-or-treated.

South Side ran away with conference titles in girls’ and boys’ cross-country this fall, going undefeated in the process, and the ladies followed up with a repeat Nassau County Class II championship.

In muddy and slippery conditions at Bethpage State Park last Saturday, South Side had three of the top five finishers and out-legged Calhoun and Manhasset by a considerable margin.

“The girls were underdogs on paper, but it was well within their reach and they absolutely peaked at the right time,” coach Chris Webster said. “They all ran huge.”

Junior Cameron Coletti finished one second under 20 minutes to pace the Cyclones. She was second overall. “Cameron is considered one of Long Island top runners,” Webster said. “She’s been our best all season,” he said.

Freshman Lana Jewett, a transfer from Bellmore, burst onto the scene for and emerged as South Side’s No. 2. She was fourth in the county meet. Sophomore Claire Bohan features a “smooth stride,” the coach noted, and finished third on the team in most races and did so again last Saturday when she was fifth overall. Sophomores Kelsie Reinholdt and Morgan McKenna completed its top five and finished 17th and 22nd overall, respectively.

“You can’t win cross-country meets with one or two fast kids,” Webster said.

“You need a full lineup and then some.”

South Side’s boys’ team placed fifth in the county meet. “The last time the boys had an undefeated regular season was 1999, so it’s a pretty big deal,” Webster said. “Beating Manhasset was unprecedented.”

It was Sept. 20 at Bethpage State Park where the Cyclones edged Manhasset by two points to set the tone for their conference title. Though Brendan Conniff won the race for the Indians in under 18 minutes, South Side had the next three finishers — Kieran Cook, Josh Garelle and Colin Grace — and two others — Matthew Gallego and Finn Maier — in the top 13.

Basketball might be Garelle’s No. 1 sport, but he used his lengthy stride to contribute every race. He posted South Side’s fastest time at Eisenhower (17:57) and won the conference race Sept. 27. In addition to Gallego and Maier, both seniors, Webster noted the rise of sophomore Dominic Rossiello.

RVC finds ‘Source of Strength’ with suicide prevention efforts

After successfully launching a Sources for Strength program at South Side High School to foster support and a sense of unity for those dealing with mental health issues, the program has expanded to elementary schools and to classes in the Oceanside and Freeport school districts.

Sources of Strength is a national, suicide prevention program for adult mentors and is being funded by the Ryan Patrick O’Shea Foundation, which was formed shortly after 2018 South Side High School graduate Ryan O’Shea died by suicide at age 18 on Jan. 11, 2019. His parents, Mary and John O’Shea, are the foundation’s president and vice president, and they, along with nine other board members, have worked to foster a dialog about a subject that makes most people uncomfortable.

Initiatives for Sources of Strength include emphasizing support systems in place for students, including for mental health, family support, positive friends, mentors, healthy activities, generosity, spirituality and medical access.

“The program bonds students together and explains how powerful it will be for the students to reach out to their peers and just explain that you need to find sources of strength in your life and build on them,” said John O’Shea, who is also the school board president, “and find

O’Shea said that after bringing the program into the Rockville Centre School

District over the past two years, he has found it to be “uplifting,” and a good source to help those who are in need. In 2020, students took some time in English class to learn about the program, while it was implemented into various curricula on the elementary school level. The Source of Strength program sends someone into the schools to spend a day with students and teachers and bring them together for training and other exercises.

After its success in Rockville Centre, the program recently launched at Oceanside High School and at each elementary school in Freeport. O’Shea said the goal was to have the program at all grade levels, kindergarten through 12th, in the future in each district.

“We give our kids a great education here in Rockville Centre and the other school districts, but life is becoming harder and harder for our younger people to process,” O’Shea said. “We give them the tools to learn their math, science and English, but they need tools to get through the mental aspect of life. It’s really so important to pay attention to your mental health. You can get over your problems. Nothing is so bad that you can’t get passed it and make it better.”

Last year, students and staff organized a club called S.A.F.E., or Suicide Awareness and a Friendly Environment, as another component of district-wide initiatives to address mental health — and an important one because it is largely student-run.

RVC residents to be honored for autism research efforts Two longtime Rockville Centre residents have been named honorees of the 2021 virtual Seaver Celebration, which supports the Seaver Autism Center for Research and Treatment at Mount Sinai.

Tony and Mary Lou Cancellieri will be honored at the virtual presentation on Nov. 9. The Cancellieris are passionate advocates for the autism community.

Supporting autism research helps children, and while there are still many unanswered questions about the disorder, researchers and clinicians are working tirelessly to understand more about it. The unsung heroes give families hope now, and in the future, but their work cannot be done without support.

The Seaver Autism Center leads progressive research studies and provides personalized care to individuals with autism and related rare disorders. Working together with families, the center takes a genetics-first approach to identi-

fy the causes of autism and develop and disseminate breakthrough treatments.

The multidisciplinary team works closely together to translate discoveries in scientific research from the laboratory to the community. Research participants at the center are eligible to receive free comprehensive evaluation reports that are invaluable resources to parents and caregivers to help advocate for their loved ones to receive the services that they require to achieve their optimum quality of life.

The Seaver Autism Center is at a critical period in its trajectory. In order for it to sustain its growth, it must continue to invest in the future of autism research and care.

At the premiere, guests will learn more about the Seaver Center’s work, the families it helps, and why Cancellieri’s chose to be avid supporters.

OBITUARY

Former longtime Rockville Centre resident Henry “Harry” A. Kaiser died on Oct. 23 in the loving arms of his wife of 66 years, Carolyn, at his home in Captiva Island, Fla. He was 91.

Whether it was on the beach or the ski slopes, Kaiser lived life to the fullest. He was born one of seven children to his parents in Baldwin on Aug. 6, 1930, and lived in Rockville Centre for more than five decades. Kaiser and his family were active parishioners of St. Agnes Cathedral. He was a graduate of Brooklyn Preparatory High School and then Fordham University in 1953, and he obtained his master’s degree in business administration from New York Graduate School of Business.

Kaiser was an important forerunner and pioneer within the ski industry, serving for more than 35 years as the publisher of Skiing Magazine and later as the president of The Skiing Company, from which he retired in 1996. An avid supporter and fundraiser for the U.S. ski team, and chairman of the New York Committee for the U.S. ski team, Kaiser was honored extensively for his commitment to the sport, and was inducted into the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame in 2015.

Through five different ownerships of the publication, Kaiser’s tenure included president of the Times Mirror Corporation from 1985 to 1996 as publisher of Ski Magazine, Skiing Magazine, Trans Word Snowboarding Magazine and various trade publications. He was publisher and vice president of CBS from 1982 to 1985. In addition, Kaiser was publisher and vice president of Skiing Magazine and Skiing Trade News from 1964 to 1982 under the banner of Ziff Davis Publishing Company.

Kaiser was equally dedicated to the preservation and conservation of surf, sand and beach environments. Since 1963, he and his family have been active members of the Atlantic Beach Club. At ABC, Kaiser served on the board of directors, was president of the club and of its Land

Henry Kaiser Company, preserving the club in perpetuity for its more than 250 members. The Hon. Harry Kaiser became a commissioner for Florida for beach preservation with the Captiva Erosion Prevention District in 2008. Kaiser was instrumental in creating environmentally pristine beaches, saving the migration of turtles and a host of other natural habitats and species that flourish on Captiva Island.

Additionally, Kaiser served in the military during the Korean War as an ordinance and Army specialist.

Kaiser is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his five children, Hank, Carolyn, Lorrie, Cindy and Catherine; his 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services and a celebration of life will be held in late sprig on a beach.

like Long Beach Road,” Truisi said. He added that he did not want business plazas like ones in Oceanside to break up the small-town aesthetic of the village.

“If you picture a multi-family dwelling, that’s at least three or four more cars in our area, and where are those going to be put?” resident Marc Stromberg said.

Stromberg was one of a few speakers who said they were worried about congestion in the area. He preferred the use of existing structures, he said, noting, as Murray did, that the businesses lost during the pandemic would be replaced because of local demand.

Another attendee, Kristen Glynn, said she had grown up and bought her first house in the village, and was not in favor of any large development. “The charm that makes everyone want to stay in our town — I feel like it would be lost with so much of an overcrowded aspect to it,” Glynn said. “It’s just not the town that we grew to love.”

Shawn Dacey, a resident for the past four years, expressed his full support for the proposal, citing environmental, economic and health reasons. Dacey, who has a background in real estate and finance, said there would be plenty of positives to additional development.

“Increased development near train stations can lead to a wide range of benefits,” he said, citing a Rutgers University study. “These benefits range from

approached by local building owners in the business district, as well as some residents, about the possibility of mixed-use construction close to the LIRR station. In early 2019, officials commissioned the study by BFJ, which concluded in January and determined that a transit-oriented development downtown was feasible.

Trustee Michael Sepe closed the meeting by stating his opposition to the proposal.

“There’s nothing curmudgeonly about saying we want to maintain the village as it is,” he said. “Personally, I think there are plenty of pros. The cons — just my opinion — outweigh them.”

A. You probably should have asked this question before the purchase, not after. In general, the Federal Emergency Management Agency requirement is that the building must be mitigated, made resilient to the potential of flooding, if either the dollar amount or area to be added on or worked on exceeds 50 percent of the existing buildonte eeper ing. That was what the official was telling you.

People are often in denial about the extremes they will need to go through, and think this issue is negotiable. Buying a house in a flood zone with the intention of making major changes or additions isn’t a good idea if you aren’t prepared for the expense of major lifting to get the habitable level at least 2 feet above the base flood level for the zone the house is in. When I meet with people who are proposing to do any kind of major work in a flood zone, I often have to deal with seeing the disappointment in their faces followed by the discussion of how their project is either going to be the exception or nowhere near the threshold of where a house would need to be lifted.

People buying in a flood zone need to be made aware before purchase that they may as well be ready for the possibility of an eventual lift of the entire home. The basement is required to be filled so that the area below the house can drain by gravity with special flood vents. If you weren’t prepared for these expenses, then you’re going to have to make a hard decision.

It’s possible to do less work and phase things in over time so you don’t meet the 50 percent threshold, doing part of your master plan now, more in a year or two, etc. But don’t do anything without discussion and agreement with the building official who will be in a position to decide whether the amount of work isn’t exceeding the threshold, and what waiting time must be taken before filing for a permit for the next phase. This isn’t necessarily the “spirit” of the regulation, but some municipalities will work with you to help out so you don’t go broke trying to meet your needs.

Understand that safety and survival of an extreme storm condition are still a primary intention of how your home should be designed and approved. Without all this effort, we would all be paying the price to rescue people, paying in taxes over and over. Good luck!

must confess that the older I get, the more time I spend thinking about all of the crises our country has endured in my lifetime. I was a young boy when America was going through the horrors of World War II. As I progressed from career to career, the nation had to deal with wars in Korea and Vietnam and the tragedy of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. All of these events had one thing in common. The people of America were totally united and determined to fight our enemies.

JERRY I think of those challenging KREMER days and contrast them with the nation’s response to the coronavirus disaster. If you look at a national map showing the vaccination rates of the states, it looks almost identical to a political map highlighting the red states and blue states. With a few exceptions, the states populated by a majority of registered Republicans have the lowest rate of vaccinations, in contrast to states dominated by Democrats.

If you look at states like New York, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire and New Jersey, the vaccination rates are in the 66 to 70 percent range. Most of the time those states support Democratic candidates over their Republican challengers. In sharp contrast, states such as Wyoming, Idaho, North Dakota, West Virginia, Mississippi and Alaska are in the 40 per cent range. All of those states are considered solidly Republican. While crowded hospital intensive-care units are a distant memory for New Yorkers, people are dying in record numbers in red states for the sake of partisan politics.

Not a day goes by without a story about some red state governor screaming about vaccine mandates and telling his or her citizens that it is their choice whether to get vaccinated or not for Covid protection. The irony of the state resistance to vaccinations is that all of their schoolchildren have been required to get a series of vaccinations in order to attend their local schools.

I contrast the craziness of these grandstanding politicians with stories from across the Atlantic Ocean. Recent

reports from overseas highlight the fact that many of those countries are far ahead of the U.S. in vaccinating their residents. Portugal is a good example, because their vaccination rates tell an interesting story. According to the Wall Street Journal, close to 100 percent of people over age 50 in Portugal have received at least one vaccine dose. For those between ages 25 and 49, the rate is 95 percent. To date, 89 percent of the entire population of 10 million has had at least one dose.

And Portugal’s high numbers are surpassed by the United Arab Emirates, which exerts strong control over its residents.

The owner of a souvenir shop in Lisbon, Portugal, stated the best case for why our red states should be pushing for their people to be vaccinated. “I need tourists,” said Paula Margues.

“Otherwise I have no business.” Places like Wyoming, Idaho, North Dakota and Alaska need tourism to keep their economies stable, and they spend millions each year to attract visitors. Instead of pushing for a healthy populace, their leaders spend most of their days battling federal mandates and looking for

There is another ironic twist to the red state resistance to vaccinations.

Most of the people who are dying of Covid are also their favored voters.

While the overall death numbers are small in comparison with the Eastern states, red state governors are allowing their people to suffer needlessly because of government inaction and the numerous false claims of anti-vaccine groups. This is pure government malpractice.

I hope that in the not-too-distant future, the coronavirus pandemic will become nothing but a memory. But the partisan bickering over a life-or-death solution will be recorded as one of the bleakest times in the history of our country. Our citizens have every right to stand up for their personal beliefs, but not at the expense of millions of people whose lives were lost because politics got in the way.

What to do before the winter snow flies

inter is coming, meteorologically, astronomically, politically and “Game of Throne”-y. Let us embrace this brief, bridge season between fall and early winter, when the weather is transitioning and the clouds are gathering.

We could exhaust ourselves with political knife fights or try to figure out how our Great American Democracy came to hinge on the advice and consent of a fractious group of legislators, but we have all winter for that.

There is practical stuff to consider during these weeks.

I don’t feel like watering my annuals anymore, being lazy and more inclined to let them wither and die, but I feel guilty. How many more days do they have to enjoy their favorite activity, photosynthesis? So although they are ragged and quite pathetic, I douse them once in a while as an end-of-life gesture.

It’s pretty much each living thing on

its own. The trees and big bushes had better be hardy enough to withstand a tough winter, because we don’t believe in coddling the plant life with fertilizer or plastic protection from the elements.

We do close the windows in our porch and throw covers over the outdoor grill and chairs, but that’s about it in the way of preparation.

Come the first cold snap, we’ll turn on the heat. For now, however, on good days the windows are open, and fresh air blows through the house.

I feel a certain urgency to get out and do some of the activities I put off because, after all, we had “all summer.” So, come along and cash in on these warmenough days. Head for the boardwalk or the park for a brisk walk; before too long, we’ll be walking against the chilly winds of late November and December.

Before too long, we’ll need hats and gloves to venture outside.

Get out of town. I like the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where I can walk around the area where my great-grandparents began their life in America. The city beckons, with its pedestrian-friend-

ly districts and communities, and now is the time to go and walk, from the High Line to Battery Park. You can almost pretend that Covid doesn’t exist if you stay outside and dine at food stands. You can almost pretend that “surge” and “spike” and “antivax” aren’t part of the lexicon. In a few weeks, our city streets will become wind tunnels, inhospitable to the daytripper.

Another perfect fall destination is the East End, to visit the vineyards and the corn mazes and experience the last perfect days on the beach. The crowds are gone and the restaurants are still open.

Or head north a bit and pick apples.

When my kids were young, that was probably our favorite fall activity.

Recently my husband and I went back to one of the orchards we knew, and it had become overcrowded and commercial.

Back home again, it’s time to plant bulbs for next spring. This is much more than guaranteeing a bit of color next May and June. It feels like an investment in the future, a declaration that come what may in January and February, we know the seasons will turn again, the sun will drift further north and the tulips will bloom. I think of it as an act of faith.

In the same way, I spend some of these days preparing soup and packing it away in containers for the cold nights when I may not feel like cooking. Maybe that’s a little bit squirrely of me, storing food away for the hard times, but it feels good to do so.

Kids are in school, beach clubs are closed and the days are getting shorter.

Still, we have this autumn interlude.

With all the tumult in the world, these few days seem like a metaphor for grasping what is good in our lives when we can, because we can.

Something about knowing this time is finite propels me out the door and into the ebbing light.

Setting the record straight on county policing

F

our years ago, as the race for Nassau County executive between then Legislator Laura Curran, a Democrat, and then State Sen. Jack Martins, a Republican, was heating up, the state Republican Party attempted an all-too-common GOP political tactic: It tried to paint Democrats as weak on crime, saying Curran would allow the notorious El Salvadoran gang MS-13 to run wild across the county.

The GOP did so in a last-minute mailer that showed three shirtless, tattooed Hispanic men grimacing angrily. The flier, mailed to homes across Nassau, read, “Meet your new neighbors. Laura Curran will roll out the welcome mat for violent gangs like MS-13.”

The flier, which was inherently racist, came at a time when fears of MS-13 were running high after young Hispanic men, hacked to death with machetes by the gang, were found buried in the woods in Baldwin, Freeport, Merrick and Massapequa.

It was a low blow that played to voters’ basest fears. And it was wrong. Voters saw past the Republicans’ attempt to win by any means possible, electing Curran, and MS-13 never overran Nassau, as predicted.

In fact, we’ve heard little of the gang since a series of high-profile arrests of numerous gang leaders.

Thankfully, we had had, as of press time Monday, relatively little of such political chicanery. Curran’s opponent this time around, Town of Hempstead Councilman Bruce Blakeman, was laserfocused on lambasting Curran over the county’s property-tax reassessment, and said relatively little about crime.

During an endorsement interview with the Herald editorial board leading up to the election, however, Blakeman tried to make it sound as though Nassau was not, in fact, the “safest county in America” two years in a row, as judged by U.S. News & World Report. There had been an explosion of crime during the coronavirus pandemic, he said, that was not factored into the magazine’s rankings. He ticked off a list of recent violent crimes, wondering why they had not garnered greater media attention.

That got us thinking: Is Nassau really as safe as the magazine says it is? Curran made public safety a cornerstone of her campaign, and regularly touted the U.S. News assessment.

Nassau, we found, is indeed a very safe place to live. We could not undertake the county-by-county assessment that the magazine did. We did, however, look into the crime statistics for 2020 and 2021, Nassau County Police Department precinct by precinct. And, we are pleased to report, crime — particularly violent crime — has

been astonishingly low here the past two years.

Nassau’s murder rate on any given year is 2 per 100,000 people. The nationwide average was, by comparison, 7.8 per 100,000, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That is not to say there is no violent crime here. This is not the Mayberry of “The Andy Griffith Show.” This is one of the country’s most densely populated counties — with nearly 1.35 million people — outside the largest city in the nation, so we expect to see crime. We cannot dispute the claim, though, that Nassau is either the safest or one of the safest large counties in the country.

At the time of this writing, we had no idea who would win the county executive’s seat. The Herald endorsed Curran this year, as we did four years ago. Unlike 2017, she had a record to run on this time, and when it came to policing, she made the grade. So, win or lose, we should thank her for her continual support for the men

and women in blue who patrol our streets and keep us safe.

Blakeman attempted to link Curran to the movement to defund police. In no way, however, did she ever promote a plan that would reduce funding for our police force.

Quite the opposite. Throughout her first four years in office, she touted a singular message: She unequivocally supported the NCPD. At the same time, she was able to win a concession from police, who agreed, finally, to wear body cameras in exchange for an annual stipend. It was an important win for police accountability.

We now encourage whoever wins the county executive’s seat to seek greater diversity in the police ranks. The latest class of police cadets to go through the academy this year, while more diverse than past classes, was still largely white.

That must change as Nassau’s demographics change. We hope and trust that it will. If it does not, residents must demand reform.

he United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, began last Sunday and will run through Nov. 12. Participants will include more than 190 government representatives and business leaders who are expected to discuss efforts to ensure that countries and companies live up to climatechange agreements made at the 2015 Paris climate conference.

Former Secretary of State John Kerry, now the special presidential envoy for climate change, is ALAN heading the U.S. delegation, which SINGER includes several members of President Biden’s cabinet. Biden, who is also scheduled to attend, reportedly plans to call on nations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius — a still-devastating number.

Long Islanders should pay close attention to this conference, because climate change will likely have a profound effect here, given that it’s causing sea levels to rise, and we live on an island.

Unfortunately, the Biden administration has so far been unable to pass its ambitious climate agenda in the Senate.

Climate villains include Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, of West Virginia, and virtually every Republican in the Senate

and House. Manchin’s political career is funded largely by fossil fuel companies, and he owns millions of dollars in coal company stock. He is trying to force the Biden administration to drop renewableenergy subsidies from the federal budget.

American corporations often claim they are good environmental citizens.

According to Alberto Carrillo Pineda of the Science Based Targets initiative, however, “You can look at a company’s website and see their sustainability report and it will look great, but then when you look at what is behind it, you’ll see there is not a lot of substance behind those commitments, or the commitments are not comprehensive enough.”

A recently released report by the Private Equity Stakeholder Project highlights how the short-term hunt for profit and market manipulation make U.S. finance one of the world’s biggest climate villains. While countries, including the U.S., are plagued by drought, forest fires and hurricanes because of climate change, the secretive private equity industry has invested more than a trillion dollars during the last decade in fossil-fuel companies. Virtually singlehandedly, the industry keeps some of the worst-polluting oil wells, natural gasleaking towers and coal-burning power plants pumping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

LETTERS East Side Access is a year from completion To the Editor: I recently joined Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials to take a special Long Island Rail Road test train to Grand Central Terminal, giving the public one of the first looks at the new 350,000-square-foot East Side Access passenger terminal there. This is the largest new train terminal to be built in the United States since the 1950s and the first expansion of the LIRR in more than 100 years.

Together with the LIRR third-track project, the new connection will add 50 percent to the LIRR’s capacity into Manhattan, with up to 24 trains per hour, and cut travel time for Queens and Long Island commuters traveling to the East Side by 40 minutes per day. It will also reduce crowding on commuter rail at Penn Station and on the subway by dispersing commuters and allowing passengers to go directly to Grand Central Ter minal from destinations across Queens and Long Island. The new com-

While its ClearGen subsidy is committed to promoting “sustainable-energy infrastructure,” Blackstone invests in 25 fossil-fuel companies. Among its recent acquisitions is the pipeline company Tallgrass Energy, which is developing an “oil export terminal in Louisiana that would emit more than 500,000 tons of greenhouse gases annually.” Tallgrass is also responsible for releasing thousands of gallons of oilfield wastewater contaminating North Dakota farmland. And Blackstone is notorious for investing heavily “in polluting plants located in proximity to communities of color.”

KKR plans to partner with the renewable energy consulting firm Crossover Energy Partners to develop solar and wind power projects. However, it also partners with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company to produce and distribute petroleum products, and is expanding natural-gas fracking projects in Wyoming. Overall, KKR invests in 28 fossilfuel companies. The Carlyle Group/NGP Energy Capital plans to invest in Amp Solar Group, “a Canadian-based global energy transition platform,” but it is also investing in expanding oil production in Colombia and Ghana. Overall, it

holds assets in 68 fossil-fuel companies.

While capitalists pollute the Earth and speed up global warming, nominally socialist countries like China aren’t doing much better, and belong on the climate villains list. China’s leader, Xi Jinping, promises that it will start reducing greenhouse gases by 2030, and will be carbon neutral by 2060. Meantime, it is increasing coal production and the use of coal-fired power plants. The plants receive tax deductions and are greenlighted for bank loans.

The list of climate villains must also include Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Libya, Argentina, Colombia and Brazil, all nations that are expected to attend the Glasgow conference. Saudi Arabia’s national oil company, Aramco, the world’s leading oil producer, recently announced plans to increase its production by at least a million barrels a day by the 2030s. Stateowned oil companies in the other countries are also planning to increase production. The UAE was the first Persian Gulf country to pledge net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Meanwhile, it is investing more than $100 billion in new oil and gas projects.
