We learned we’re stronger together

Frank Siller can recall sitting at a kitchen table with his siblings and other family members on Sept. 11, 2001, glued to the television as they collectively realized that Frank’s younger brother, Stephen, wasn’t going to return from the World Trade Center. The brothers planned to play golf that day, but Stephen, 34, a New York City firefighter working for Squad 1 in

Brooklyn, was on his way home from working a night tour when he heard what was happening, turned his car around and headed back toward the twin towers. Frank said he believes his brother died in the collapse of the south tower, though his body was never found in the rubble. In honor of Stephen and all those who lost their lives that day and in the years afterward, to cancers that resulted from their work at

ground zero, Frank is taking part in the six-week-long Never Forget Walk, a 537-mile trek from the Pentagon to the World Trade Center. The endeavor will benefit the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which Frank and his family created in Stephen’s honor. “I decided to do this because I wanted to do something special for the 20th anniversary of 9/11 that would shine a big light on what hapContinued on page 27

The coronavirus pandemic sw e p t a c r o s s t h e U n i t e d States, including Rockville Centre, like a wildfire over the past 18 months, killing 617,000 of our fellow Americans. We mourn each and every one of these precious lives taken too soon. In recent months, however, we have begun to emerge from this n at i o n w i d e c a t a s t r o p h e, a n d because of the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, we are seeing a glimm e r o f h o p e. Though the C ov i d - 1 9 i n f e c tion and death rates have ticked up recently, we are far better off than we were one year ago. We also learned an important lesson during this crisis: We are stronger together. Throughout the pandemic, all of us at the Herald have strived to report the news of the day swiftly and accurately. Suddenly last spring, we were no longer a weekly newspaper. We were a daily, publishing the news online at liherald. com and in our newsletter. Hundreds of thousands of people a month came to our website for the latest news.
