Four candidates are vying for two open seats on the Rockville Centre Board of Education.

Newcomers Nancy Turnblacer and Erika Messier are challenging incumbents Kelly Barry and Liz Dion, who are both seeking re-election. The three-year terms are set to begin on July 1.

The election and budget vote will be held on May 18, from 7

I expanded access to educational opportunities and advocated to expand the Chromebook program to ensure that all students have access to advanced technology.

I insisted that safety and security be a priority in the district, encouraged the construction of secure entrances, and supported adding a capital improvement line to the annual budget to renovate and maintain aging structures. For 10 years in a row, I helped bring the school spending plan in under the tax cap, including this year’s proposed budget, which has no tax levy increase.

My husband, Peter, and I have lived in Rockville Centre for 30 years, and our two children were educated in village district schools and are South Side graduates.

Last year I was part of the team that hired Superintendent June Chang, who has led the district to open all schools with full instruction, including electives at the secondary level, and all support and specials at the elementary level.

My top priority is to ensure that we continue the exceptional and inclusive education that we have come to expect from the Rockville Centre School District.

As it moves out from under the weight of the pandemic, the focus must be the support of all students as they return to a more stable schedule in our classrooms.

The priority must be meeting our students’ social and emotional needs, addressing their strengths and the areas where they development. Our schools are ready and prepared for the work, and I am excited to be part of it.

I am seeking re-election to a second term on the Board of Education after honorably serving for the past three years. I am an 18-year resident of Rockville Centre. My husband, Ciaran, grew up here, and graduated from South Side High School in 1997. We have three children who attend Rockville Centre schools.

I am a social studies teacher at Hauppauge High School, where I have worked for my entire 20-year career. I teach college psychology and I.B. Theory of Knowledge. My love for this community and my passion for education were why

I decided to run for trustee three years ago.

During my term, I am proud to have been part of the hiring of Superintendent June Chang. I am also proud of the partnership with Northwell Behavioral Health Center, adding counselor and academic support positions, adapting to the many challenges that the pandemic presented for our students and staff, the oneto-one device rollout, capital improvements, and enhancing our programs while focusing on the academic, social and emotional wellness of our students.

I am an active listener who encourages collaboration and reflection. I will continue to be an intentional and thoughtful voice as the district steadily moves forward under our new leadership while remaining true to its core values.

Three years ago, I stated, “It takes the work and collaboration of the entire community to build and maintain great schools, and I want to be part of that process for all of us in Rockville Centre.” I still wholeheartedly believe this to be true. While over the past three years I have learned that we may have different views on how to realize this, if we remain focused on what we have in common rather than what may separate us, we can productively and respectfully work together toward a positive future for our children.

Erica Messier

I am running for the Board of Education because I am passionate about education. After graduating from Lehigh University in 2003, I moved to Rockville Centre and began my teaching career at Garden City Middle School. During my 17-year tenure in the Garden City School District, I have taught social studies, coached varsity athletics, and served on multiple committees designed to evaluate and improve current programs to reflect best practices.

My husband, Seth, is also a Garden City teacher, currently the lead teacher in the Gifted and Talented Program. We have two children, Ryann, 8, and Jake, 4.

Since Ryann started kindergarten in 2017, I have been actively involved in the William S. Covert Elementary School PTA, and in 2019 I was nominated to serve as a co-president. Over the past two years, I have worked alongside the parents, staff and administration of Covert to design

and execute fundraisers as well as schedule and implement worthwhile programming that directly benefited all of our children.

Collaboration has been a hallmark of my work as a teacher, coach and PTA copresident. If elected to the Rockville Centre board, I will commit to representing the entire community, including those who may not have a direct relationship with the public schools, by staying informed on community issues as well as local, state, national and global education.

I will bring a thoughtful, sincere and deliberate approach to the position, using my voice to ensure that all stakeholders’ concerns are heard and collaborative solutions are guaranteed. I will use my expertise as an educator to provide oversight with knowledgeable critique and advocacy, ensuring that the educational program aligns with the district’s mission — to provide a safe, nurturing environment in which individual and civic responsibility is fostered, diversity is respected and all students are enabled to realize their full potential.

In 2013, I moved from Battery Park City to Rockville Centre with my husband, Jon Diorio, who grew up in the village. The driving force in our decision was the topranked school district. At the time, South Side High earned very high rankings nationally. Our neighborhood primary schools were also recognized. If elected, I will make it my goal to bring our rankings back to the high level that brought many of us to this community.

I consider myself a strong advocate for children, families, educators and public education. I am an active member of the Hewitt PTA. I have been a class parent, and I regularly help with elementary school events. I teach religious education through St. Agnes as a volunteer, and have gotten to know many children in our community through my four years as a catechist.

I grew up primarily in Maryland, attended Loyola University and majored in economics. Afterward I attended the University of Maryland School of Law, and worked for nearly 14 years at the Fed-

eral Trade Commission.

I have three children. My oldest daughter is in fourth grade at Hewitt Elementary, my son is in second grade at St. Agnes Cathedral School, and my 4-year-old “Boss Baby” is in nursery at the Learning Academy in Rockville Centre. After she was born, I decided it was time to leave the FTC and focus on my family and community.

I have been asked why I sent my son, TJ, to St. Agnes this year after he spent kindergarten and first grade at Hewitt Elementary. He has a speech delay and has an individualized education program.

He has received services since he was 18 months old. After our experience with remote learning last spring, it was apparent that my son benefited from in-person learning. In August, it was unclear whether Hewitt Elementary would return fulltime to in-person schooling, but St. Agnes was prepared to do so, so my husband and I made the difficult decision to switch TJ to ensure that he was in the environment that was best suited to his needs. While the change was hard for us, I believe it made me a stronger candidate, because it has given me a unique perspective as a mom of a child with special needs, a Hewitt Elementary mom, and a St. Agnes mom.

I believe my business and economics background will help ensure that the district operates in a fiscally sustainable manner. While I applaud our proposed budget’s 0 percent tax levy, I am concerned that it was achieved, in part, by relying on cost savings from shuttering the schools during the pandemic and the 22 percent increase in state and federal aid the district received this year. Going forward, I believe we need to look critically at our budget from the bottom up to ensure that we are providing the best academic access for our students while minimizing the burden on taxpayers.

I have also become concerned about the perceived lack of communication to and partnership with our community by the current board and our district administration. If elected, I pledge to operate as a responsive and sincere, unfiltered advisory voice for our community.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin and Councilman Bruce Blakeman also cong ratulated Christine Fisenne, of Freeport, after the residents were inoculated at the Freeport Recreation Center, courtesy of the Town of Hempstead and Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital.

Also attending were Mount Sinai South Nassau staf f members Ray McGuire, of the Freeport Fire Department, and Freeport Village Mayor Robert Kennedy.

Hempstead Town provided nearly $700,000 in federal CARES Act funding to Mount Sinai South Nassau for the purchase of a mobile vaccination unit, which is now being deployed throughout the town.

The 90-minute program ran smoothly, with a Trivia Hub host introducing 10 questions in each of the three rounds before sending team members into private rooms to coordinate their answers. The program’s virtual nature expanded the population of donors.

Harris reported that players from more than 12 states competed, and as of Sunday, the foundation had received more than $15,000 in donations. The “soft”

goal was about $10,000, she said, adding that she was “delighted” by the success of the event.

For over 30 years, the foundation has awarded grants to students, teachers and school district staff to expand its curriculum and resources. Past grants have helped introduce SmartBoards, 3-D printers, robotics materials and more.

Proposals from faculty and administrators have already been sent in, and are being reviewed by the foundation’s Grant Committee. Grants could be awarded as soon as next month.

Harris said she would not rule out the possibility of staging the virtual event again next year, to complement what she hopes will be the return of the gala.

Sirens blared and tires squealed as a white Chevy Caprice banked hard into a curve at Jones Beach State Park after peeling down a straightaway at 50 miles per hour last Thursday. Meanwhile, a black Crown Victoria cruiser raced across to cut the vehicle off at a four-way intersection. The Caprice braked hard as it neared the stop sign.

Sirens continued to sound when a Nassau County police van appeared out of nowhere at the intersection, the driver also intending to cut off the Caprice. It was a semi-chaotic, seemingly confusing scene, but it was meant to be.

The action took place at the Field Five parking lot at Jones Beach, an expansive stretch of asphalt just west of the Northwell Health Theater, where Nassau County Police Academy recruits come to practice driving maneuvers that they might need while chasing crime suspects or hurrying to an accident.

“We try to teach the recruits to have good judgment,” said Officer Richard Furneaux, the senior driving instructor.

To drive as a police officer does, you must learn to drown out all the noise in your head and focus solely on the road ahead and behind you, while watching your sides. Officers must know when to pursue a suspect — and when to call off a pursuit, which is often necessary in order to protect public safety. A high-speed chase through suburban streets can be a recipe for disaster, Furneaux said, noting that police often call in a helicopter to provide air support and follow a suspect until the vehicle is caught.

Lt. Eileen Carsten, who is in charge of physical fitness, defensive tactics and EVOC at the academy, said that driving is, in fact, the most dangerous part of being a police officer.

After former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all counts against him on April 20, civil rights leaders, officials and activists breathed a sigh of relief momentarily before reminding Americans of the racial challenges the nation will continue to face going forward.

Chauvin faces 40 years in prison for the most serious charge of seconddegree murder after he kneeled on George Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes, killing him, during an arrest for using counterfeit currency. The ensuing protests touched every corner of the country, including the village of Rockville Centre.

“This verdict represents a measure of accountability that was sorely needed,” State Senator Todd Kaminsky said in a statement, “but real justice would have meant that Mr. Floyd would have walked away from that encounter — one that will be forever seared into the conscience of our nation.”

Kaminsky said he started his legal career as an assistant district attorney in the Queen’s County District Attorney’s Office, where he prosecuted violent crimes, including domestic violence cases, robberies and shootings.

His message was encapsulated by Vice President Kamala Harris’ address the day the verdict was announced.

“Today, we feel a sigh of relief. Still, it cannot take away the pain,” Harris said.

“A measure of justice isn’t the same as equal justice.”

State Assemblywoman Judy Griffin echoed the sentiment.

“While I hope we can all breathe a sigh of relief from today’s verdict and

take some comfort in knowing that this was an important step and acknowledgement in our nation towards the accountability that we need in order to heal,” Griffin said in a statement, “this is just the beginning.”

“A disproportionate number of black and brown families have suffered from police brutality or inequality in our judicial system,” she continued, “and although I can’t speak for these families, my heartfelt thoughts are with them. I think we can all agree that George Floyd and countless others have not been treated with justice and equality and we all need to work together by creat i n g m e a n i n g f u l a n d i m p a c t f u l change.”

Rena Riback, of the Rockville Centre Anti-Racism Project, weighed in, as well.

“We are thankful that Chauvin was found guilty on all three charges,” she said. “This is accountability. We hope this is the beginning of systematic change that will lead to true justice in our nation. The fight against racism doesn’t end here; we all must continue to be active anti-racists.”

The Anti-Racism Project works with Sharon’s Food Pantry at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Center on North Centre Avenue to provide for those in need with meals for their families.

Chauvin is scheduled to be sentenced on June 16 at 1:30 p.m. but is not expected to see the full 40-year sentence due to a lack of prior criminal history. Since multiple sentences can be served concurrently in Minnesota, Chauvin may only serve the sentence of the highest count.

The median recommended sentence is 12 and a half years, which has precedent from the sentence Mohammed Noor received for killing a woman in his squad car after he discharged his weapon.

Herald Football News MacArthur stops South Side in semis

After a long 17 months, MacArthur has earned a shot to avenge its 2019 loss to Garden City in the Nassau Conference II football championship game.

The Generals used their prolific ground attack, spearheaded by senior Ryan Isom, to set the tone in last Friday night’s 28-7 semifinal playoff victory over visiting South Side. Isom carried seven times and accounted for all 57 yards on the opening drive, capped by his 5-yard touchdown, and junior quarterback Ryan Muller had rushing and passing scores as second-seeded MacArthur (6-1) won for the 15th time in its last 17 games dating back to the start of last season.

“We brought a lot of energy right from the start,” said Isom, who totaled 223 yards on 33 carries and also scored on a 10-yard run in the second quarter for a 14-0 lead. “We’re exciting to have a second chance at Garden City,” he added.

The Generals will travel to face top-seeded and four-time defending county champion Garden City (6-0) in the title game this Saturday at 2 p.m. The Trojans hit a late field goal to beat MacArthur 16-14 in the 2019 final and took this year’s regular-season meeting 35-29 on March 27.

“I’m sure a lot of the guys have been thinking about Garden City, but South Side is a tough and physical team we needed to get by first,” MacArthur head coach Bob Fehrenbach said. “Now we hopefully have one more big performance. When we played Garden

City earlier this year we didn’t get any stops in the beginning and couldn’t score on an eight-minute drive just before halftime.”

No. 3 South Side (3-3) kept its momentum going after winning nine games and playing for the Conference III championship in 2019. Head coach Phil Onesto said its offensive line, anchored by senior Jack Temple, served as the key to a third straight trip to the semifinals.

“It was a solid season and we knew we’d need to take advantage of every possession tonight,” Onesto said. “I thought we played hard and it’s not like we made many mistakes. MacArthur is tough to play against.”

Junior TJ Maher scored the Cyclones’ lone touchdown with 3:57 remaining in the first half, catching a 17-yard strike from senior quarterback JohnJude Considine to cut the margin to 14-7. Senior Matt Melkonian, who led the team in touchdowns with nine, set up the score with a 53-yard run.

The Generals answered with a 62-yard scoring drive, capped by Mullen’s 2-yard touchdown with 21 seconds left in the half, and led 21-7. Mullen then hit junior Matt Papach on a 20-yard touchdown pass to cap the opening possession of the second half. Senior kicker Alyssa Accordino drilled all four of her extra-point tries.

“We have other things that we can do with the ball, but our offensive line is big and has done a great job so we’re sticking with the ground game with Isom and [James] Napoli,” Fehrenbach said. “I don’t think it’s any secret.”

South Side runs to county championship

T he high school cross-country careers of South Side’s Avery Brull and Olivia Duca came full circle April 17 when seniors led the Cyclones to the Nassau Class II championship by placing fourth and fifth, respectively, over the 5K course at Eisenhower Park.

Brull and Duca were among South Side’s top 5 finishers as freshman in 2017 when it last captured a county crown. Both are year-round runners who’ll compete at the college level.

Sophomore Cameron Coletti and freshmen Claire Bohan and Morgan McKenna rounded out the team scoring at Eisenhower to join the seniors with AllCounty performances.

“It was great to see Avery and Olivia bookend their careers with county titles,” coach Chris Webster said. “We knew it was going to be a tight race with Manhasset and Calhoun as the strongest contenders. I liked what I saw from our girls in warmups and they really ran well.”

Webster said Brull, bound for Cornell University, is a tireless worker who he sometimes has to ask to not push herself too hard. “Avery’s a machine,” he said. “She likes to go out assertively and is a smart runner. She ran a strong, consistent race.” Brull finished the county meet in 19 minutes, 39.12 seconds.

Ten seconds behind Brull was the Boston University-bound Duca, a former state qualifier who battled injury as

a junior and hadn’t run competitively in over a year. “Olivia slowly built up her stamina and had a great finish,” Webster said.

Coletti is another year-round runner who was in South Side’s top 5 as a freshman in the fall of 2019. She placed 10th overall at Eisenhower with a time of 19:56.11. “She’s been on the rise since joining the team last season and is so focused on setting goals for herself,” Webster said.

Bohan and McKenna both set personal bests by large margins in their first county race, which helped the Cyclones pull away from runner-up Calhoun and third-place Manhasset. Bohan finished 19th in 21:28.50, shaving an incredible 90 seconds off her previous fastest time, a n d M c Ke n n a ( 2 5 t h i n 2 2 : 0 0 . 3 8 ) improved by 54 seconds.

“Claire is a talented runner and she was just on fire,” Webster said of Bohan. “To PR by 90 seconds is amazing.”

McKenna never ran a cross-country race before March. “She learned how to pace herself and race,” Webster said.

Freshman Emma Sitterly and sophomore Olivia Scalere were also keys to South Side’s success and helped it capture the Conference III title with a 13-0 regular-season mark. They placed 31st and 34th, respectively, in the county meet.

“There’s a fine line between getting the kids psyched up and ready and not putting too much pressure on them,” Webster said.

Cinco de Mayo

There’s really only one way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo - and that’s with ice-cold margaritas. Whether you’re a fan of the simple, traditional recipe or like to mix things up with fun, fruity flavors, there’s a margarita to satisfy any palate.

We’ve put together a list of delicious margaritas that will make Cinco de Mayo the party of the year. From classic recipes with simple ingredients to decadent creations with exciting flavors, these refreshing drinks are a fiesta in a glass!

Classic Margarita

While the margarita’s origin is heavily disputed, there’s a consensus on what makes a drink a margarita. You’ll only need three ingredients, and you can serve it multiple ways.

Combine two ounces of tequila, one ounce of lime juice, and one ounce of Cointreau into a cocktail shaker. Cointreau is an orange-flavored liqueur, and it’s the main reason margaritas are served with a salted rim. The salt helps cut down on the sweetness of the Cointreau. Triple sec is a widespread substitution for Cointreau if you don’t have any on hand.

After mixing, pour over ice (“on the rocks”) into your glass, garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy! This recipe can also be served without ice or blended up, making it a go-to margarita recipe.

Watermelon Margarita

Cinco de Mayo usually means warmer weather, and this is the perfect recipe to beat the heat. With four simple ingredients, you don’t need to be a mixologist to create this cocktail.

First, you’ll muddle mint leaves in a cocktail shaker. Second, add two ounces of tequila, two ounces of watermelon juice, and half an ounce of lime juice into the shaker and mix. Finally, strain into a glass with ice and garnish with mint leaves. This is a delicious and refreshing twist on the classic recipe and will be a hit all summer long!

Strawberry Mango Frozen Margarita

While you can serve the classic margarita recipe as a frozen drink, you can’t go wrong adding fruit into the mix. You’ll need one mango and ten strawberries for this recipe, but a surprising number of fruits sub in just as well. Do your own experimenting to discover which fruits you like best!

Combine your mango, two ounces of tequila, half an ounce of lime juice, one ounce of triple sec, and one cup of ice into a blender. Blend the ingredients thoroughly and split into two glasses.

Then, you’ll blend the strawberries with tequila, lime juice, triple sec, and ice. Pour this blend on top of the mango, garnish with strawberries, and enjoy!

Jalapeño Margarita

If you want to go all-in on authentic Mexican flavors for your Cinco de Mayo party, mix up a jalapeño margarita for the perfect mix of heat and sweet.

Start by combining a half part of orange liqueur, a half part of agave nectar, one part lime juice, one slice of jalapeño, and one and a half parts of tequila in a shaker. Cazadores Blanco is a perfect tequila for this margarita, adding subtle floral and citrus notes to the drink.

After the ingredients are combined, give them a shake, strain into a glass, and garnish with a lime.

Adding freshly squeezed juice will boost flavors without added sugars.

Vanilla Pear Margarita

“What does a soup kitchen do in the middle of a pandemic when gathering for a meal is not safe or permitted?” asked Steve Greenfield, vice president of the Baldwin Civic Association. He volunteers with the Soup to Nuts Soup Kitchen housed in Christ Lutheran Church in Freeport.

In reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic, volunteers have adjusted the pantry’s operations over the past year. The facility closed last April and reopened in June.

Soup to Nuts used to operate five days a week but is now open only three days a week: Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Bagged, to-go style lunches are handed out by volunteers outside the church between noon and 1 p.m., and on Wednesdays, cooks come in to prepare hot meals.

Bagged lunches include sandwiches, pizza slices, fruit, donuts and any other items that are donated that week.

Additionally, volunteers set up tables outside in a supermarket style to allow guests to take grocery items they may need.

“There’s really a lot of camaraderie among the group,” Ken Luba, of Rockville Centre, said of his fellow volunteers. “A lot of times, different people work different days — some people work multiple days — but it seems like everybody’s just trying to check their egos and do what’s necessary to put out the best product that we can for everybody.”

Island Harvest and Long Island Cares provide boxes of food in addition to donations from local shops, including Associated Rockville Centre, Rockville Bagels, Brower Avenue Deli, Bagel Boss in Baldwin, Trader Joe’s in Merrick, Fehn’s Cake and Cookie Shop in Seaford, Compare Foods in Freeport and Edible Arrangements in Bellmore.

“Before, these tables all were set, people were coming, taking and eating, and they were socializing until 1 o’clock,” said volunteer and coordinator Armineh Sevadjian, of Wantagh, who has worked with the pantry for about eight years. “Then we say, OK it’s time to go, we have to clean up.”

She and fellow volunteer Barbara Curreri, of Freeport, who has also worked with the pantry for about eight years, explained how — pre-Covid — trays of hot food were put out and guests were offered “seven-course meals.”

Curreri said she hopes to restart the in-person dining experience in the fall, if it’s safe.

“All of the funds and goods contributed go entirely to community residents in need,” Greenfield said, adding that the guests include low income families, day laborers, homeless people and anyone else who shows up.

About 15 volunteers — the kitchen is completely staffed by volunteers — come in on a given day to help out.

“We are doing the absolute best we can, and the guests are as grateful and as polite as can be,” said coordinator Marian Hart. “And we get special donations like adult diapers . . . We are happy with all the special donations because it tells the guests that people are thinking about them and whatever people can do, they’re trying to help us where they can, how they can.”

Greenfield added that the soup kitchen could use more volunteers as well as contributions of cash, non-perishable food items and paper goods, such as toilet paper and paper towels. For more information, visit http://souptonutssoupkitchen.org.

t has been said that the only constant in life is change. Being a religious leader during a pandemic has unquestionably influenced what it means to maintain a house of worship.

Every challenge had to be met with a creative response. We could no longer assemble in person for services or holidays, so like most institutions we resorted to remote platforms for prayer and a plethora of programs. In this way, and with concerted outreach by email, text and phone, I was able to provide meaningful connectedness and a sense of belonging. Early on, making sure people living by themselves and those otherwise vulnerable had food, medicine and essentials was a real priority. The virus has been devastating. Large numbers have been seriously ill, and far too many have died alone. And mourners tragically

grieved without the physical presence of family and friends. We have been forced to be reminded of the significant healing power inherent in the human touch, the love that emanates from a smile, and the comfort that comes from a sympathetic soul.

I have seen and felt a newfound appreciation for numerous festive experiences which we had previously taken for granted, most notably life-cycle events. Celebrating the arrival of newborn babies, coming of age traditions such as confirmations, birthdays, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, and even weddings have all been affected. Conducting ceremonies via Zoom or in very small gatherings at home has, at the same time, become temporarily normative and instructive about how precious people are in our lives.

At the time, restaurants were severely struggling by not being permitted to have indoor dining. They were completely relying on takeout orders. This project enabled the club to support local restaurants by providing them with desperately needed business and feeding our tireless health care workers and first responders, who were being asked to work around the clock.

Kiwanis is a service organization. Most of our events involve having a lot of people together inperson. Our meetings switched to Zoom and our

service events, which were not canceled outright, were revamped to be compliant with Covid-19 restrictions. The club was fairly successful in repackaging some of our events to enable us to still provide service and activities to the children of our community.

The pandemic forced us to embrace technology, including the use of virtual meetings.

While people are ready to return to their prepandemic lives, I think technology will continue to have a greater influence in the post-pandemic Kiwanis world.

After the pandemic hit, it was great to see the Oceanside community come together to help each other. It is amazing how well everyone comes together in time of crises to help those in need — even in a community as large as Oceanside.

FREEPORT President, Freeport-Merrick Rotary Club

uring the pandemic, our biggest challenge was the lack of access to the public.

Without events or community gatherings, we had no outlet to reach the community or fundraising opportunities. We were very limited in what we could do. But, despite the challenges, our Rotary Club members stepped up.

Members donated PPE for us to distribute to the community. They helped purchase food to donate to local pantries. We had a big Thanksgiving food distribution, and we were able to raise funds to donate $100 gift cards to 21 Freeport students living in shelters so they could celebrate Christmas.

The Rotary also joined the Million Mask Project, which is a national project to donate one million masks to those in need. We donated 2,000 masks to Village Hall, and those

masks go directly to the residents. We also donated more than 4,000 masks to the school district. We also plan to donate more masks to other local organizations, like the Freeport Police Athletic League, Woodward Children’s Center and American Legion Post.

When we heard about the fire at Duryea’s Flower Shop, we made sure to reach out and support them at their location at the Nautical Mile. It’s important to be there for the community and support each other through these difficult times.

While we have seen hardships, we have also seen an incredible amount of emotional support this past year. The pandemic is still ongoing, and we plan on doing much more to help and protect Freeport this year.

he Covid-19 pandemic was very rough for me. I was a Baldwin High School class of 2020 graduate. Graduating in the middle of a pandemic was hard. It completely changed my post-grad plans. I always planned on going away to college, but due to money and stress, that plan was fading away. This is when I began getting more involved with the Hangout One Happy Place.

The Hangout One Happy Place is a nonprofit organization that serves the special-needs community on Long Island. I had worked for other special-needs programs before, but the Hangout is like no other. The individualism and care given to the participants is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I decided while volunteering for the Hangout that I would no longer be attending college.

This was a tough decision, but the Hangout leader, Angela Lucas, guided me through this tough time. She helped me start working for Independent Support Services, and later as a Baldwin teacher aide. These jobs allowed me to spend more time at the Hangout and take on more roles and responsibilities in the organization.

I grew up with a special-needs brother and was always told I should work with that population.

Knowing I would spend my adult life being a caretaker to my brother, I didn’t plan on working with disabilities as my career. However, since being a part of the Hangout One Happy Place, I don’t think I would do anything else. I love what I do, and I want nothing more than to keep working with the Hangout and help the program grow into something even more amazing.

I

started at Sharon’s Food Pantry about a year ago. My background is that I’m a real estate agent and I deal only with section 8. So I’m always working with low-income people. My heart just reaches out and wants to help in any way I could.

The donations come in and I’m one of the people who goes through the donations and organizes them. And once we do that, we do bag-and-go. In each bag we make sure there’s two pastas, two sauces, fresh vegetables, meat, and now that we have connected with Island Harvest, we have extra meat.

We had three people come last week, and when we gave them ground beef and chicken, they got back on line to give it back because they were homeless and living in the hotel up the street and didn’t have a kitchen. So when we get

someone like that, we have emergency food like a TV dinner or canned foods.

When the pandemic started, the line stretched from the Martin Luther King Jr. Center to almost the fire department. And we welcome it. The more we can help, the more we give, the more people will be fed.

We don’t want anyone to go hungry because they had to pay their mortgage, or the check just isn’t stretching.

It’s been really hard, especially for the people in Rockville Centre. We’re seeing all kinds of people on the line to receive food here. And they’re talking among each other and they’re trying to build their lives back step-by-step.

OBITUARY

Dolores Maria Edwards-Far ren, beloved mother, wife, grandmother, friend and teacher, died on March 22. She was 69.

Edwards-Farren grew up in Rockville Centre and graduated from South Side High School. One of her fondest memories was being Blue Team captain in 1969 for the popular girls sporting event Red and Blue.

Dory, as her friends nicknamed her, went on to complete her Masters Degree in English Literature at Queens College.

She spent her life educating children and adults, teaching them how to write, stand up for their rights and respect themselves. She taught at Roosevelt High School for 20 years.

She also worked as an adjunct English professor at Nassau Community College for 18 years. She wrote two off-Broadway plays and had her second book, “Gertrude’s Guilt,” published.

She is survived by her husband, Brian Farren, with whom she had four children. They have two grandchildren with another one on the way (Colleen, Keith, the late Brian, Conall, Kiera and soon-tobe Baby C).

It’s ironic that my mother was the person who taught me that the safest way to properly set the tone for a paper was to use a good quote from another author.

Now I am not particularly certain that by “safe,” she meant it was the right thing to do. I believe in her mind, the word “safe” might have actually meant lazy. But I figure because I’m quoting her, hopefully she’ll forgive me.

What can I say about our mother, your friend, Dolores Edwards-Farren? Well, I can further explore the “safe” route and talk about her impressive list of accomplishments and bountiful passion for philanthropy. We can spend all day talking about her prolific teaching career, from middle school to college and from state prison to Rikers Island. We can highlight the endless list of children she’s educated, adolescents she’s guided and adults that she saved (although she would say that they saved her).

Naturally, we can be here until tomorrow expanding upon her accomplishments as a published poet, playwright and author. We can tastefully embellish on her sheer creative and literary brilliance, and eloquently detail how her experiences as a child and young adult contributed to her beautiful artistry.

And then there is Brian Farren, her soul mate, best friend, gift of strength from heaven, delivered in a divinely crafted chalice of serenity and pragmaticism.

Her peace. And George! We can never forget about George, Brian’s beloved brother, who instantaneously became our beloved brother. George, unlike Brian, may not have exactly been her peace, but was certainly her family. The years that she devoted making sure he lived the best

She truly treated George like one of her own children, which was with unlimited love, boundless generosity and perhaps most importantly, our mother treated George as she did all of us: as her equal.

On this day, in the spirit of Dolores Edwards-Farren, we will dare to be bold.

We will dare to be blunt. And we will confidently forgo the “safe route,” and put all of our cards out on the table.

Despite how many funny stories we have to tell, memories we have to share, and wine we have to drink, there is not enough distraction in all of Rockville Centre that will erase the universal feeling of sadness that most of us share today. There is a big, Irish Catholic Elephant in the church with us today; it’s name is despair. As accustomed to it as most of us are, my mother always told my siblings and I that she never wanted her passing to be unbearably morbid. Our mother always wanted us to rejoice in her memory, and find unity, comfort and love in one another. So in order to do that, I think we first need to identify our pain, and confront it head on. . . . With that in mind, let us not allow hearts to break for the perceived time that we are losing, but rather rejoice and honor her name by loving as she loved, giving as she gave, and thanking God for the time that we were granted with her, and for all that she has taught us. Dolores Edwards-Farren has not left us. Her loving spirit will forever live in all of our hearts. It’s up to us to decide how we will honor her each day. We love you, Mom. as the pandemic wrought havoc on your haven? Is your dining room barely discernible from a garage sale? After nearly a year of living, working, schooling, and playing at home, perhaps your space could use a good ol' fashioned spring spruce up.

Getting everyone in the family involved in spring cleaning or year-round household chores is a win-win. It’s good for parents, because let’s be honest, you could use some help. It’s good for the kids because it teaches them responsibility and what it means to be part of a family.

Few people look forward to chores around the house. Though adults may not be excited by the prospect of mopping the kitchen floor or folding the laundry, their lack of enthusiasm no doubt pales in comparison to their children’s opinion of chores.

Keep in mind that chores can play a vital role in kids’ development. According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, children can learn time management skills by doing their chores, which also can teach them how to balance work and play time. Kids can apply those lessons throughout their childhood and into adulthood. Giving kids chores also benefits them by teaching them to accept responsibility within the family and providing them with an opportunity to be successful.

You probably have a long to-do list in regard to chores around the house, and

there’s not reason not share that workload with your family. However, the AACAP notes the importance of picking age-appropriate chores for children. Children given chores more suited for older youngsters may fail at completing those tasks. Such failure may set a negative precedent that adversely affects kids’ self-esteem and makes them reluctant to do their chores in the future.

On the flip side, picking an age-appropriate chore for a child will increase his or her

likelihood of success, which can boost their confidence and make them more likely to approach their chores with enthusiasm as they navigate their way through childhood and into adolescence.

Consider these age-based chore suggestions to give your children more responsibility around the house.

2- to 3-year-olds: Children in this age group can put their toys away and help put groceries away as well. Stick to groceries that

can be dropped without breaking or spilling, which rules out jars of pasta sauce or milk and juice. Kids can also can start to dress themselves, although, of course, offer help when necessary so kids do not become discouraged.

4- to 5-year-olds: Four- and 5-year-olds can help feed pets and make their beds. In addition, this age can help clear the table after meals, but, of course be mindful to take sharp objects like knives to the sink before kids begin helping.

6- to 7-year-olds: This is a good age for kids to begin taking on more complicated chores, including wiping tables and counters, putting laundry away and sweeping floors.

7- to 9-year-olds This age group can help their parents prepare meals and even pack their own lunch for school. The responsibility of loading and unloading the dishwasher also can be given to your kids at this age.

10- to 11-year-olds: More difficult tasks like changing the sheets on their beds, cleaning kitchens and bathrooms and doing yard work are appropriate for your tween.

Hundreds react online to teacher’s lesson

Rockville Centre Teachers’ Association President Frank Van Zant recently called on the teacher’s union members to rally behind a fellow member after a slide from one of her lessons was the subject of a heated Facebook thread.

The slide from the high school teacher’s lesson was posted in the RVC Network Facebook page, where it garnered hundreds of comments from local residents. Many claimed the lesson pushed an “anti-police” agenda, although residents have said the slide was taken out of context.

Parents accused the teacher of sharing her political opinion about defunding the police, although a student from her class said they were discussing how recent protests around the country related to the protests brought on by Cuban revolutionary philosopher José Martí in the 1800s.

Residents said the group of parents berated the student after the student tried clarifying the situation.

“Part of my teacher’s curriculum is to write in our ‘blogs,’” the student explained on Facebook. “These ‘blogs’ are meant to give her insight into what the students are feeling about a certain subject. In one of these blogs, she noticed a student’s response. The response was, ‘In history, it can be argued that there are many sources of possibility as it lacks the proof of absolutes like the subject math.’”

The goal of the lesson, the student continued, was to garner other students’ thoughts about the matter.

“One of the examples was the slide above that was taken incredibly out of context,” they continued. “. . .

The point of it was to have a respectful discussion on whether history shows an absolute (and, clearly through the response to the slide, it doesn’t). It wasn’t supposed to be teaching us that the police are bad; if you weren’t listening in class, then you could get that if you suddenly started paying attention. It was a mere discussion starter

Van Zant called on RVCTA members to support their colleague in reaction to news reports that some said lacked necessary context.

“We would like to show our solidarity and support for our fellow member,” he wrote to members. “We ask if you can join us this Monday, April 26 at 7 a.m. in front of the high school to walk our colleague into the building.”

He asked members to carry signs. Monday morning, teachers were not seen walking their colleague into the building. An assistant principal told the Herald that the Teacher’s Association canceled the event. Superinten-

dent June Chang issued a statement to the community.

“We remain steadfast in our belief that discrimination and divisiveness have no place in our community,” he wrote. “Likewise, lessons and activities that create divisiveness or that marginalize anyone have no place in our schools. We are grateful for the support of our law enforcement officers and first responders who partner with us to create secure and inclusive learning environments, without whose support we could not safely operate our school district. We are thankful for everyone who stands with us in our continuing efforts to foster inclusion and combat discrimination in all its forms.”

Town names Shara Brull a ‘pathfinder’ Rockville Centre resident Shara Brull was recently recognized by the Town of Hempstead and given a prestigious award.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin, Councilman Bruce Blakeman, Town Clerk Kate Murray and Receiver of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll presented the Town of Hempstead Pathfinder Award to Brull during the town’s celebration of Women’s History Month on March 25.

The Pathfinder Award is presented annually to Town of Hempstead women that have demonstrated outstanding commitment and dedication to the residents of America’s largest township.

Every year since 2008, the Tommy Brull Foundation has raised funds to benefit a wide variety of people living with physical, mental and emotional disabilities in the community. Serving as secretary to the organization, it is no wonder that Brull has joined the prestigious ranks of the Town of Hempstead Pathfinder honorees.

Despite Covid-19 putting a damper on most fundraising efforts, the Tommy Brull

Foundation continued to excel in its charitable collections thanks to the efforts of Brull and the other volunteers of the organization.

Throughout the foundation’s existence, Brull has been a driving force behind the organization and has been a major factor in its resounding success. The efforts of Brull do not stop there, however, as she is also an adamant force on the Wilson Elementary School PTA — taking her fundraising know-how and applying it by leading activities such as the Winter Coat Drive and the end-of-year Student Competitive Games.

The Pathfinder Awards also featured inspirational remarks from Murray, who was the first woman elected town supervisor; Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, the first African-American woman to serve on the Hempstead Town Board; Receiver of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll; and Dr. Debbie Salas-Lopez, senior vice president of Community and Population Health at Northwell Health.

Pressure-treated lumber, intended for outdoor use, can be dangerous, but the beam with the steel plate is also a problem. There’s a reason that when you go to a big-box store or lumberyard, the lumber is separated into two areas, treated and untreated.

There’s also a reason the big-box stores stopped letting customers cut treated onte eeper lumber in the store.

Pressure-treated lumber, developed over 100 years ago, was created by forcing chemicals into lumber using giant pressure chambers. Treatment was intended to keep lumber from being eaten by microbes, insects and termites, and it has worked well, but with unintended consequences. The poisons used in the lumber were studied and shown to cause respiratory ailments, and in some cases, repeated or prolonged contact led to skin cancer.

Although poison formulas have been changed to be safer, imagine getting a splinter from the local playground jungle gym. It’s easy to understand why school systems across the country replaced the outdoor play equipment with plastic, steel and painted products.

The best place for treated lumber in a building is the closest to where most insects can enter, near the ground. The base plates that connect the floors to the foundation are usually treated lumber, along with an expandable foam and a copper or plastic rigid sheet called a termite shield. If the materials are installed correctly, the invaders can’t get into the house. Because the base plate is generally covered with other materials or in a place that isn’t as occupied, it’s safer than in the general living spaces above.

The steel-to-wood connection is dangerous for the separate reason that the chemicals used to treat lumber are very corrosive to metal, to the point that a steel plate inserted between two pieces of lumber to form what’s called a “flitch plate beam” could actually corrode and weaken to collapse in only a few years after it was made.

Since lumber used for decks is generally treated lumber for outdoor use, it is mostly recommended for the structural parts underneath, and not the exposed parts. Outdoors, the off-gassing of poisons used to treat the lumber is most often not considered harmful, although highly sensitive people may still be affected. I haven’t read specific studies on this, but understand that the use of poisons and pesticides outdoors can still have a profound effect on those people. So use gloves when handling treated lumber, don’t use it indoors and coat or cover the exposed lumber, especially in areas where food will be served. Good luck!

nce upon a time, partisan politics was a simple business.

There were two major parties, and they both had simple strategies for staying in power. The voters were attracted to either the Democrats or the Republicans based on their philosophy and the vision of their party leaders. Elections were won or lost based on the strength of the party machines and their loyal soldiers.

But the politics of yesterday have disappeared, and the parties will never look the JERRY same again. Both are currently split KREMER into two factions.

If you’re a Republican at the national level, you’re either pro-Donald Trump or anti-Trump. And if you’re a Democrat, you’re either a traditional middle-of-theroad true believer or a so-called progressive. And regrettably, neither of the factions in either party is prepared to work with the other side.

The next important election will take place in 2022. The final tallies will determine which party will control the House

and the Senate. President Biden needs a Democratic Party victory to help him get his programs through Congress. The Republicans want to regain power so they can be better positioned to retake the White House in 2024. But the GOP proTrump wing and the Democratic progressives are not on the same playing field as the parties’ two traditional wings.

The pro-Trump Republicans are prepared to take on the favored party candidates because the former president is looking to punish any candidates who voted to impeach him. The progressive Democrats are anxious to gain power and influence and have no loyalty to the party. A case in point illustrating the Republicans’ challenge is Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, a loyal party member who occasionally casts a vote with the Democrats on an issue of conscience. She gets a 98 percent rating on voting with her fellow Republicans, but her vote to impeach President Trump put her in the Trump doghouse, and she is now threatened with a primary challenge.

Led by Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Republicans have pledged to support Murkowski and provide funds for

her contest if she decides to run for reelection. She will not be easy to beat under any circumstances. She is the second-most-senior woman in the Senate.

She won one of her elections as a write-in candidate after losing the party nomination. Her father was governor of Alaska. But despite her strong credentials, the former president has vowed to challenge her.

Incumbent Democrats aren’t having any easier time with their progressive wing. Rep. Carolyn Maloney of New York has been a well-respected member of Congress since 1993. She has been the sponsor of numerous bills that have advanced women’s causes, and chairs the House Oversight and Reform Committee. Members on both sides of the aisle describe her as fair and progressive.

But that isn’t enough for the group known as the Justice Democrats. They have selected a candidate to oppose her, claiming that she must be defeated because she is part of the “establishment.” For the past 50-plus years, it has been very rare for any Democrat from New York to have enough seniority to hold a key House chairmanship, but

epublicans are vexed by pro-Trumpers, and Democrats by their young progressives.

Maloney’s status doesn’t dissuade the progressive Democrats.

In recent years, they have won a number of contests, starting with the election of Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez. She has become nationally known because of her constant media presence, and was able to defeat incumbent Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley in the primary for the 2018 midterm election, primarily because Crowley treated the contest lightly. Even though he spent over $3 million in his effort to get reelected, his failure to campaign actively cost him his seat in the House.

Last year, the progressive group managed to unseat Rep. Eliot Engel, mostly because Engel failed to pay attention to his district, especially during the coronavirus crisis.

In the months ahead, the Republican pro-Trump faction and the Democratic progressives will give the two party establishments plenty of heartaches. It will be a test of whether there is any life left in the traditional party structure, but the odds aren’t very good.

College of hard knocks: the pandemic of 2020-21

This was the college we neither applied to nor wanted to attend. This was the education we could have lived without. This was the schooling that killed a half-million of us.

This was the time, 14 months and counting, that we learned more than we could have imagined about our own strengths and weaknesses.

You never wish for tragedy as a character-building exercise, but when human beings confront extraordinary challenge, RANDI they often grow in KREISS unexpected ways.

Have you thought about what you’ve learned since last spring, when we realized we would all be long haulers in some way?

After a time of intense anxiety, I learned that I needed to devote myself to activities that were all-consuming and demanding of my attention. That was both good and difficult, since concentrating was hard when I kept drifting into “what-if ” scenarios. I spent some of my time in Florida and I drove inland, past the coastal towns to orchid farms and

nurseries in the boondocks. I discovered that wandering through the orchid houses was safe. The orchids bobbed in the breeze, and the kaleidoscope of colors and shapes became my fascination for the day.

I learned, too, that what I read or watched on TV mattered during difficult times.

I needed to read historical fiction that brought me out of my own place and time.

On television, I tuned out the news after the presidential election, and tuned in to documentaries, mostly nature (See “Chasing Coral”). I was having Covid nightmares at the time that I could not have had before the pandemic. In the dreams I would walk into a crowded room and suddenly realize that everyone was sick, and I would get sick, too. Shutting out the news helped.

For a long time, I measured my days in a completely different way from the “before times.” While two years ago I might have been running around all day, the pandemic day was pared down to the basics. I might take a walk in the morning, then conduct all work and pastimes online, cook a meal, and go to bed.

I learned how brave and plucky and smart my grown kids and niece and

nephew are while raising teens and toddlers and infants in the worst of times.

They all worked and kept house and nursed babies and didn’t go mad. The grandkids toughed out constant disappointments and cancellations.

Learning how unprepared the country was for Covid-19 was a shocking lesson. I always assumed we were better than that, that if any country in the world could deal effectively with a global pandemic, it would be us. Yet the messaging from the federal government and from our scientists was distressingly inadequate. We were distinctly unexceptional.

Post-pandemic, we need to educate, fund and support science and scientists and never again let politics trump scientific evidence.

But I learned that, even coming from behind, America can do the right stuff, develop vaccines and get them into people, millions of whom are still skeptical about the shots. And haven’t we all been schooled in the anti-science thinking that abounds? We need to push the education pedal to the floor and raise a new generation of critical thinkers.

I asked my kids and grandkids to tell me what they learned over the pandemic

year. One said he learned that so many joyful family times together have nothing to do with paid events. Another said, “There is no better place to be than out in nature.” Another said, “I learned not to worry about things I can’t control … I’m very happy being surrounded with a fraction of the people I previously interacted with.”

One of the grandkids, 15, said, “I learned that physical interaction with others is essential for your mind.” The preteen said, “Humans are very resourceful although most people struggle with change.” A 14-year-old said, “I thought it was cool that people just adapted super quickly to living in a whole new way,” and the 18-year-old said, “Online does not always mean more efficient.”

I learned that the little things that irritate an individual in isolation with a longtime partner, as in a 53-year marriage, are like grains of sand in an oyster.

Sometimes you get a pearl, an appreciation for the love and support that endures.

The most important lesson of Pandemic 2020-21: We’re still in school. It’s not over. We may have to dig deeper and find more strength and forbearance, and I believe we will.

The heartache of gun violence continues

49-year-old father of seven and grandfather of one, Ray Wishropp, was killed April 20 by a lone gunman in the manager’s office of the West Hempstead Stop & Shop over what Nassau County police say was an employee dispute.

We at the Herald offer our deepest sympathies to the Wishropp family. We also want to express our appreciation to the officers of the Nassau County and Hempstead village police departments, who quickly tracked down the alleged shooter and apprehended him without further violence. Their professionalism was on full display that terrible day.

The gunman, who was reportedly overly flirtatious with another employee, had met with a manager and requested a transfer to another supermarket. When he didn’t get what he wanted, he left the store, but returned 40 minutes later and started firing, police said. In addition to Wishropp, two other employees were injured in the attack.

It was an all-too-familiar scenario in America, particularly these days — another life extinguished all too easily, all too quickly, all too early, leaving another family in a state of our mourning and shock.

We are, seemingly, in a perpetual state of mourning and shock in the United States. Since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in 2012, when we pledged to never allow another mass shooting like this to happen again after 26 were killed, there have been hundreds of these shootings across the country.

One person was killed and two others injured when a gunman opened fire inside the West Hempstead Stop & Shop. My heart goes out to the victims and their families.

I want to thank the first responders, police officers and detectives who apprehended the suspect without incident following a brief search. Their quick response provided critical aid to those injured in the shooting and brought a measure of calm to an otherwise chaotic scene.

This doesn’t happen by accident; it is the result of diligent training and coordination with other law enforcement agencies. Within minutes, our schools were secured thanks to the protocols enacted in response to the

Most are smaller shootings, with a half-dozen or fewer victims. In fact, the Stop & Shop shooting would not be registered as a mass shooting on FBI statistics lists. For that, four people or more must be killed, according to the Congressional Research Service.

When looking at mass shootings more expansively, factoring in the number killed and injured, there have been 2,654 mass shootings since Sandy Hook — nearly 300 a year, or close to one a day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Astoundingly, though, mass shootings account for only 2 percent of all murders in the U.S. In 2017, more than 11,000 people were murdered by gun; in 2018, 10,440; and in 2019, 10,258 — an average of 30 people a day. Think about that for a moment. Let the numbers sink in. At some point, we must wake up and own up to our reality: America is a murderous nation.

That fact does not comport with our image as a shining city on a hill, a beacon of freedom and democracy for all the world to emulate. Gun violence is our national psychosis, and we must act to reverse course. Instead we seem to thrust ever forward to new and unspeakable levels of violence.

Over the past year, when so much of the nation was on lockdown because of the coronavirus pandemic, we saw a merciful respite from mass shootings. All

seemed relatively quiet. Then, as the country started to open up again this spring, they began anew, as if, during the past year, a temporary truce had been drawn up and the fighting had stopped, only to be reignited by a single violent act that triggered a cascade of more and more shootings.

As a nation, we must commit to ending the killings through a science-based approach to violence reduction. Long Islanders can be thankful that Northwell Health committed $1 million to establish a Center for Gun Violence Prevention in 2019. That December, the health system, one of the largest in the country, held its first Gun Violence Prevention Forum in December, followed by its second last December.

Our elected leaders and community activists need to become more vocal on this issue — seeking studies, as Northwell has done, to understand more fully the stranglehold that gun violence has on the nation, while at the same time calling for common-sense legislation to reduce the number of killings.

In New York, it’s easy to ignore the issue. The state has some of the nation’s toughest gun laws — and one of the country’s lowest death-by-gun rates. We will never, however, feel truly safe across this land until all states realize the importance of more stringent gun regulations in promoting public safety.

The Stop & Shop shooting reminded us, in no uncertain terms, that gun violence can erupt anywhere, at any moment, in America.

or 19 years I have called the United States my home, my safe place and a country that I dearly love.

Yet it continues to deny me recognition as one of its own as a result of my immigration status. I have lived here longer than in the country of my birth, and I have learned to love every little thing that makes America America, from its language to its seasons, its food and its noise, even its fast-paced lifestyle.

I was born in Ecuador and came to the U.S. when I was 14. As a eLiana Deferred Action Childhood FernanDeZ for Arrivals, or DACA, recipient, I have been able to finish college and buy a home — but my life has been measured in two-year increments.

Soon after I arrived in this country, I realized that many of my dreams would not come true because I was missing one piece of the puzzle — “legal status.” I have never let my immigration status define who I am or what I can achieve, but the reality is that it has presented a

series of obstacles that have been hard to overcome.

In June 2012, President Barack Obama announced that he would sign an executive order called DACA to protect young people who came to the U.S. as children from deportation. That took my life and dreams on a completely different, and revolutionary, path. The DACA program has been my safeguard, even if I must renew my status every two years. The program has also allowed me to become vocal and get involved in the immigrant rights movement, through which I witnessed some of the worst of this country’s tendencies during the Trump administration.

Many undocumented immigrants like me became easy prey for President Donald Trump, who constantly forced us to fight back against all of the anti-immigrant sentiment and policies that were unleashed during his presidency. Defending DACA on the streets, and in the courts, where I served as one of the plaintiffs against Trump for unlawfully ending the program, has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.

Letters many shootings we have seen across the country over the past several years. Students across Nassau County spent the day in lockdown as parents worried about their safety, in scenes that have become all too common in our society.

All of this, though, could have been much worse if it were not for the brave men and women of the Nassau County Police Department, led by Commissioner Patrick Ryder, and those from the cooperating agencies. They did their jobs with professionalism, stepped up when we needed them most and, most important, worked with the community to apprehend a dangerous suspect.

Last year, Nassau County was ranked the safest community in America by U.S. News & World Report, and yet even we are not immune to this epidemic plaguing our nation. This is beyond politics, and it’s up to all of us — Democrats and Republicans — to fight for a future free of senseless gun violence. I stand ready to do my part.

a movement delivered a DACA victory at the U.S. Supreme Court last June, and then in January, when President Biden was sworn in. Many promises were made on the campaign trail last year that led me to believe that a legislative solution would finally be introduced to protect people like me and the rest of the 11 million undocumented people in this country.

Then, on March 18, HR6, also known as the Dream and Promise Act, was passed by the House of Representatives, promising a pathway to legalization for an estimated 3.1 million people, including DACA and Temporary Protective Status, or TPS, recipients.

Passage of the bill can be credited to the immigrant youth and community that for years has led the fight to build a movement to provide our people with respect, dignity and the pathway to citizenship that we deserve. The bill’s success in the House brings the promise of long-overdue relief to millions of undocumented youth and TPS holders who have organized, rallied in the streets, shared their stories and flooded the halls of Congress.

The vote brought me one step closer to

ensuring that I will be able to have permanent protections in this country and remain together with my children and family.

Nonetheless, as our immigrant community celebrates the bill’s passage, it is crucial to recognize that the legislation has problems that must be fixed. It includes harmful measures that rely on our unjust, discriminatory criminal legal system. It leaves out community members who should be eligible for a pathway to citizenship, but would not be simply because they might have been caught up in the legal system.

I know we face an uphill battle to pass this legislation in the Senate, but we urge senators to take up the bill quickly, and call on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to immediately remove the harmful provisions, reject any additions that would further criminalize members of our community and move swiftly to pass this measure.
