RVC village adopts $48.4M 2022-23 budget

The Village of Rockville Centre board of trustees and Mayor Francis Murray adopted a $48.4 million budget for 2022-23 during its board meeting on April 4 at Village Hall.

The figure is under the state’s 2 percent tax cap, and more than the cur rent year’s budget, which totaled $46.8 million.

“My administration has labored long and hard to find a balance between tax increases and use of fund balance reserves to mitigate any increase for our residents,” Murray said in a statement. “Last year, we were forced to use $2.6 million of reserves to balance the budget.”

The current fiscal year saw positive trends with revenues from the John A. Anderson Recreation Center, parking permits, meters and in various other areas, though they have not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels. For the average village homeowner, the budget would mean less than an additional $110 per year in taxes.

Murray said he was aggressive in attaining grants, the most recent of which came from the federal American Rescue Plan Act, which will go toward upgrading the ventilation systems in village buildings.

“This budget will ensure our residents will continue to receive the same benefits and service that they have come to expect,” Murray said.

Teachers’ Association votes no confidence in president

The Rockville Centre Teachers’ Association announced last week that it had a vote of no confidence in current school board President John O’Shea.

In a letter from the RVCTA cabinet and executive council, its members outlined several reasons for their decision, including the dispute over the board not renewing South Side High School’s county-championship-winning varsity soccer coaches, the subsequent legal fees and perceived unfair treatment and embarrassment of teachers, among others.

The vote of no confidence comes just a month before the May 17 school budget and school board votes, with O’Shea running for re-election onto the board.

“We had an issue starting in the summer with very talented soccer

coaches who were not re-hired — the Newsday Coach of the Year with no record or blemish wasn’t re-hired — and we had protests in the summer,” RVCTA President Frank Van Zant said. “How are we to feel when we are watching valued colleagues get attacked over what we regard as personal agendas?”

Van Zant also said that he and the RVCTA felt that their administrative colleagues have been frequently “dragged before a tribunal” to ask questions over things like Red and Blue and fundraising.

“It’s uncomfortable to watch and it makes these people seem supposedly less knowledgeable about their work in education than the board and the opposite is true,” Van Zant said.

O’Shea sent the Herald a statement in response on Monday, citing his frustration with the RVCTA and Van Zant’s comments. To the dispute over the soccer coaches, O’Shea noted that

state law prohibits members of boards of education from commenting on personnel matters.

“The law does not similarly restrict the union from making false claims and providing bits and pieces that distort the actual facts of the issues,” O’Shea wrote.

In response to the Teachers’ Association’s complaint about bringing teachers and administrators in front of the board at meetings, O’Shea said the board is trying to be more transparent for the benefit of the public.

“Asking a director questions about their procedures and the way they do the business of their department, in my eyes, it is not an attack on that person, it’s just bringing everything to light,” O’Shea wrote. “That’s what the public has been asking from us.”

Rockville Centre native Crystal Dunn, a World Cup champion in 2019, was named the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football Women’s Player of the Year.

Coaches and players in the region, as well as media members, selected the 29-year-old left back for her efforts on both the United States Women’s National Team and the National Women’s Soccer League’s Portland Thorns. Dunn helped the national team on its way to the bronze medal in the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo and _____________

won the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup. Dunn played for the Lady Cyclones of South Side High School, leading the team to state titles in 2006, 2007 and 2009, amassing 46 goals and 35 assists. Of her many memorable performances for “Lady Cyc”, maybe none stand out more than her fourgoal game in the 2009 state championship, netting a hat trick within the first 20 minutes of the match.

“I’m here to let other women who look like me know that their dreams matter and their dreams are achievable,” Dunn said in a video released on the CONCACAF Twitter account. “That’s the beauty of this game. That’s why I play.”

Choice awards celebrate those who ‘power’ community

After months of waiting, winner after winner stepped up to receive their firstever Herald Long Island Choice award during a gala event with Oscars-like proportions, but without any of the unnecessary drama.

The first-ever event — hosted by RichnerLive, presented by PSEG Long Island, and sponsored by TenantBase — took place April 5 at Heritage Club in Bethpage.

Voting had been underway since last July where readers and customers shared who they believed were Long Island’s best businesses in more than 260 categories covering everything from breweries to motorcycle dealers to chiropractor.

More than 100,000 votes were cast over five months, and both the top three finalists and the eventual winners were recognized at last week’s awards event.

Instead of leaving these decisions by a faceless group of judges, these awards are determined by the very people who make these businesses thrive — the customers.

That, at least, is according to Amy Amato, corporate relations and events executive director at RichnerLive. Herald Long Island Choice Awards is a way to show businesses how much their work is appreciated.

“We decided to do it because we understand the challenges that small businesses

Heritage Club hosted a cocktail hour with an open bar and hors d’oeuvres, giving many of the finalists and their supporters a chance to mingle.

“It’s definitely nice to actually see people again,” said Joe Floria of Flo Fitness of Lynbrook. “After the last few years, I think we needed this. Plus, the cheese is great.”

Each table featured an ice sculpture centerpiece celebrating the event, while on the main stage, an acrobat contorted herself in fantastical ways.

Stuart Richner, chief executive of Richner Communications Inc., commented on how important local businesses contribution is to Long Island, and how happy he was to get the chance to celebrate them.

In the ensuing hour, business after business was named winner in a whirlwind of emotional highs. Some were so excited, they jumped up on chairs and tables in celebration. Others chose to celebrate with screams and applause.

Peggy Keane, PSEG’s interim president and chief operating officer, said she was pleased to partner with Herald Community Newspapers to celebrate businesses across Long Island.

“This event recognizes all types of businesses that are dedicated to their communities,” she added, in a statement.

Those were sentiments also shared by Bennett Washabaugh, chief executive and co-founder of TenantBase.

“It was fantastic to see so many small businesses getting out, and the people that power our community,” he said. “It’s just amazing.”

Coming off a magical season that brought the program’s first Nassau County championship in nearly 40 years, South Side baseball returned 11 members of last year’s team and is aiming for a repeat.

“It’s a tight-knit group of guys and they want to win another county championship and try to go further,” Cyclones coach Tom Smith said. “I think the key for us is being more consistent.

“Last year we had an 8-game winning streak followed by a 7-game losing streak,” he added. “We didn’t handle adversity well until we flipped the switch in the playoffs.”

Smith said South Side, which defeated Manhasset for the county title and then fell 3-1 to Newfield in the Long Island Class A championship game, got an early lesson this spring. The Cyclones blew a 10-run lead in the middle game of its season-opening series against Manhasset before rallying for a 17-16 win on March 30.

“We lost focus,” Smith explained. “The good thing is we found a way to win. But we need to keep the foot on the gas until the umpire calls the last out.”

Junior Sean Britt, who earned AllCounty honors last season and has transitioned from the outfield to full-time catcher, scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh. Britt scored 28 times a year ago and batted .411 with 18 RBIs and 16 steals. He’s handling a pitching staff led by seniors Andrew Fingleton, Danny Russell and Max Breiter.

Fingleton, two years removed from Tommy John Surgery, was crisp in his 2022 debut against Manhasset with seven strikeouts in addition to clubbing a couple of homers in the series. “He’s a power pitcher who throws in the mid-80’s and he’s a key bat in the middle of our order,” Smith said.

Russell, who picked up the win in the decisive third game of last year’s county finals, follows Fingleton in the rotation and features a fastball, slider and changeup. Russell patrols center field on nonpitching days, while Fingleton plays first base.

Senior left fielder TJ Maher, who homered in a win over Valley Stream North last Friday, anchors the offense from the cleanup spot but isn’t expected to be used on the mound like last spring. He earned All-Conference honors in 2021 with a .384 batting average, 32 runs and 21 RBIs. Another offensive weapon is junior Robert Pericolosi, who thrived after a

midseason callup last year and proved clutch during the playoff run. He raked to the tune of a .486 average and provided steady defeanse at shortstop. Senior Danny Fuentes is a slick fielding third baseman and sets the offensive tone from the leadoff spot. Junior Drew Aromiskis is a speedy and reliable second baseman.

“We’re in a very competitive conference,” Smith said. “I’ll keep harping on consistency because I think we have as much talent as any team out there.”

New parking lot built for village employees

■ Lawrence Mebane, 56, of Inwood, was arrested on April 1 at 6 a.m. and charged with criminal sale of a controlled substance and criminal possession of a controlled substance after a narcotic sales investigation.

■ On April 1 at 1:33 p.m., a Maple Avenue resident notified police that someone damaged the doors on her vehicle while it was parked on her street.

■ At 7:01 a.m. on April 3, a motorist reported that her car was struck by a vehicle that left the scene while it was parked in a Maine Avenue parking lot.

A new parking lot for Village of Rockville Centre employees and members of the police and fire departments was built on Maple Avenue near police headquarters.

Chabads celebrate 120th birthday of rebbe

They gathered to commemorate what would have been an influential rebbe’s 120th birthday.

Town of Hempstead officials and rabbis from across Nassau County got together at the Chabad Center for Jewish Life in Merrick last week to honor the late Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson.

He was a leader of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, becoming its seventh rebbe in 1951. Schneerson transformed the Chabad into one of the most widespread Jewish movements, establishing a large network of institutions across the world to serve religious, social and humanitarian needs in the community. In fact, many of these Chabad centers can be found throughout Nassau.

Hempstead town officials proclaimed April 12, the rebbe’s birthday this year on the Jewish calendar, as “Education and Sharing Day.” Officials were joined by several Chabad rabbis including Shimon Kramer of MerrickBellmore-Wantagh, Anchelle Perl of Mineola, Zalman Wolowik and Meir Geisinsky of the Five Towns, Yossi Leiberman of West Hempstead, Eli Goodman of Long Beach, Zevi Baumgarten of Oceanside, Mendel Gerkov of Rockville Centre, Nochem Tenenboim of Hewlett, and Shmuel Lieberman at Hofstra University.

Congress has recognized Education and Sharing Day every year since 1978 to honor the late rebbe. Because the date it falls can vary on the Gregorian calendar, it usually occurs between late March and late April.

“The rebbe’s legacy — for anybody that is standing beside me — is tremendous,” Town Supervisor Don Clavin said. “At a time when we’re seeing people’s faith attacked for who they are — or just for being of the Jewish faith — it’s important that we remember the rebbe’s teaching.”

RABBI SHIMON KRAMER of the Chabad of MerrickBellmore-Wantagh shared what he learned from Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson on the rebbe’s birthday.

The Town of Hempstead has one of the largest Jewish populations in the United States, Clavin noted, comparable to the size of Jewish communities in New York City.

“His work was essential to the expansion of the Chabad dynasty throughout the world,” Clavin added.

There are now more than 5,000 Chabad centers worldwide.

“They are carrying on the legacy of the rebbe’s teaching and education to the next generation,” Clavin said.

Town Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, who’s district represents parts of the Five Towns where there is a particularly large Jewish population, said Chabads welcome people regardless of their religion to see the world through different glasses.

“Here in the Town of Hempstead, we have Chabads.

We have community organizations that open their doors each and ever day to celebrate the diversity of this great town,” he said. “It’s an honor to be here to celebrate the great work the rabbis and their staff, and (what) all of the Chabads in the Town of Hempstead do.”

Kramer, whose Chabad center hosted the ceremony, recounted some of the lessons he had learned from Schneerson. In fact, Kramer said, 40 years ago, he received a Tanya — a holy book that teaches human selflessness — from the rabbi.

“That’s what the rebbe was,” Kramer said. “Always selfless. He was always there for everybody else. I am honored to stand here, with my colleagues — and all of the officials of the town council — to honor the rebbe with what he stood for: education.”

Perl further emphasized Schneerson’s belief in education.

“The rebbe taught that education in general should not be limited to the acquisition of knowledge,” Pearl said. “Instead, the education system must pay more attention to the building of character, with emphasis on moral and ethical values.”

Each Chabad in Hempstead, Clavin said, would receive a commemorative sign in honor of the rebbe and his legacy.

“It really is something about education,” the town supervisor said. “That is why we are so honored to join with you, in honor of the rebbe’s 120th birthday. We want to thank you for the work that you do for the children, the adults, and for everybody in all of your communities.”

“I didn’t know we made history right away, but it was definitely just surreal,” Coyle said. “It doesn’t really hit you until later and you watch ESPN and all that, but when you’re so in the moment, you don’t listen to a lot of the noise outside and you’re locked in and just try to get better for the next game. Looking back now, it’s awesome, and I’ll just try to cherish it.”

Coyle, 28, was born and raised in Rockville Centre, and now owns a home in the village with his fiancee, Krista. At South Side High School, he played guard on the varsity basketball team and helped lead the Cyclones to a county championship in his senior year in 2012.

Coyle’s high school coach, Jerry D’Angelo, who just finished his 20th season as boys’ varsity coach, described Coyle as a very good player, and said he was impressed by how much Coyle’s knowledge of the game has grown since his playing days.

“We are very proud of Kevin,” D’Angelo said. “To see him mature and develop from the player that he was to the

person that he is right now is unbelievable. We’re really happy and really proud of him.”

D’Angelo was one of the biggest cheerleaders for Saint Peter’s as it made its historic run. He said he speaks with Coyle at least once a week, and they kept in contact during the tournament as the excitement built with every victory.

“The Kentucky game was the biggest shock to us all,” D’Angelo said, “but when they got to Purdue, my coaching staff, we’re all texting each other and watching the game and saying, ‘Do you think they can do it?’ Kevin, in high school, played a little bit with a chip on his shoulder, was always the kid that was high-energy for us and gave us a lot of effort and skill, and that’s what I saw in Saint Peter’s.”

Coyle said he fondly looks back on the county championship team, and cherished his time with the Cyclones. After high school, he went on to play basketball for several colleges, and graduated from SUNY New Paltz in 2016 with a degree in communications and business management. He injured a knee injury his senior year and had to undergo surgery, which forced him off the court, but also led him to discover that he had a passion for player development.

After he graduated, Coyle went on to play professionally in Malaga, Spain, for Club Baloncesto Deportivo Coin, in the

2018-19 season. In his time there, he said, he learned more about basketball and got a better feel for the game, because there is more passing in the sport overseas than typically seen in the U.S. He decided to come home after one season, and found out that John Jay College had an opening for an assistant coach. He got the job, and the 2019-20 season was a historic campaign for the Bloodhounds, as the squad went 20-7 overall and 13-1 in their conference. Then, as the Covid-19 pandemic wiped out the 2020-21 season, Coyle began taking on more recruiting.

Last June he made the move to Saint Peter’s.

As the Peacocks’ postseason run went on, Coyle said, he and the players tried not to get ahead of themselves. “We just wanted to win the game that was in front of us, that was it,” he said. “Our focus was just on the process, and you really just lock in the team that’s right in front of you. Overall, we have one game — if we execute the game plan, anything can happen.”

The Peacocks are now in a state of transition after coach Shaheen Holloway departed for Seton Hall, star player Doug Edert transferred to Bryant University, and more transfers are likely to come.

Despite the uncertain future, Coyle said the school showed that a No. 15 seed could overcome expectations.

“I think that any basketball team understands that it’s just one game,” he said. “That just because the name on their jersey has more money and more fame than you do, it doesn’t mean they’ll win.

And I think any basketball team can believe in themselves, and they have to.

To get to that level, you have to believe.”

Zangari is the owner of MZ Interior Design, a boutique firm in the village. In February she joined the board of directors of the nonprofit women’s shelter Bethany House, in Baldwin. On Tuesday, Bethany House told the Herald that Zangari is no longer with the shelter in any capacity. A formal announcement was planned for Tuesday afternoon after press time.

In the days after the meeting, Zangari’s comments were discussed by residents and officials from Long Island to Westchester County to Albany, and spread quickly among the Five Towns Jewish community. Dr. Asher Mansdorf, vice president of the Lawrence Board of Education, shared his thoughts on the 5 Towns Central YouTube page on Monday.

“If you ask your village board to deny any petitions for new houses of worship with the explicit purpose of preventing Orthodox Jews from potentially purchasing homes in a free market, you’re an anti-Semite,” Mansdorf said. He concluded his message by inviting Zangari to a Passover Seder in the Five Towns.

Bruce Blakeman, the first Jewish Nassau County executive, released a statement late last week. “Freedom to practice religion and freedom to live where one chooses are rights guaranteed by the Constitution,” Blakeman said in the release. “The remarks made by the resident at a recent Rockville Centre village board meeting were offensive and un-American. It is the duty of the responsive public officials to condemn the type of anti-Semitic hate speech that was in evidence at the Rockville Centre village board meeting.”

State Sen. Todd Kaminsky, whose office is around the corner from Rockville Centre Village Hall, condemned Zangari’s comments on Twitter on Sunday. “This was anti-

Many other officials, including Gov. Kathy Hochul and U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi, made similar statements on Twitter.

Zangari wrote a letter of apology to Rabbi Gurkov and his wife.

“I think that what was said was misinformation, it was unfortunate, but I think we’re moving past it,” Gurkov said in response.

He added, however, that he found it unsettling that Zangari aired her opinion publicly. “That was one of the issues that was disturbing, for the fact that a private resident was spoken about in a public way and it was put out into the open,” Gurkov said. “It caused a lot of distress and grief, because it is a private residence and not a synagogue.”

After the Gurkovs’ address was revealed, residents began showing up at their home, many with supportive messages, but it was still a lot for the family to deal with.

Gurkov stressed the need for better communication in the future, noting that if Zangari had contacted his family, they could have explained their situation before things escalated.

Mayor Francis Murray and the village board released a statement on Monday morning in response to the controversy. “Rockville Centre remains a welcoming, caring and inclusive community that embraces all members of our village,” it read. “As an elected board, part of our responsibility is to provide an open forum for all residents. We will not let divisive rhetoric of any kind define us; we embrace understanding and acceptance of all.”

Gurkov said he was disappointed with the village’s statement because it was vague, but added that he was scheduled to meet with the mayor on Tuesday morning, as the Herald went to press.

“The statement is also disconcerting,” Gurkov said. “I don’t think it addresses all the facts, and I think it’s a very weak statement.” The rabbi said he hoped that a day of unity would be scheduled to help better inform residents and prevent controversy in the future.

We just bought a house, and want to make a lot of small changes, like taking down the wall between the little kitchen and the dining area to put in an island, and making two bedrooms on the second floor. The house is one story but has room in the attic to make the bedrooms. Do we need to have drawings made to get a contractor? Some we spoke to said no.

Do we need a permit if it’s all minor work? Again, some contractors told us we don’t need one, and one said he wouldn’t do the work without one. I’m a developer in the city, but Long Island is so different.

In the city, the architect self-certifies the drawings, and a couple of days after the contractor files the job, we have a permit. I’m being told that it can take weeks for our new house to pull a permit, and there is no self-certifying. Is that true?

There are regulations for the bedroom ceiling height and insulation you must follow, or you will someday be like the several retirees I have dealt with who discovered the expensive truth: Their second-floor bedrooms fail the code requirements of an average ceiling height of 7 feet. New York state building code, which every community, includonte eeper ing New York City, follows (New York City has added restrictions), requires that the minimum height is 5 feet, and the average height is 7 feet. If you take the space width, only from the 5-foot height location and the height at the center, you can calculate average height.

I present a cross-section diagram to demonstrate compliance. Many older sellers trying to move to lower-taxed homes discover that they need to do up to $35,000 in alterations to raise roofs and add legal windows for light, ventilation and fire escape requirements as well. A few gave up, passing the problem and a price reduction on to their buyer, causing frustration.

You absolutely need permits for the “small” changes, which will end up not being so small when you realize that the wrong beams may be installed by an unqualified person who can tell you they do the same thing “all the time,” without correctly calculated and drawn plans. Most beams they install work for carrying the floor load upstairs, but don’t take into consideration the other factors, such as snow, wind and uplift loads transferred from the roof a story above. All too often I see sagging, barely detectable, wrong-sized beams when I’m meeting with potential clients. Unless there is work to be done in the area of that beam or it looks extremely undersized, I generally remain silent, because most people don’t want to hear about it, never noticed it and really do believe that any old beam will do the job, and the person with power tools knew what they were doing. Only when ceiling cracking appears do they notice. Good luck!

ussia’s brutal attack on Ukraine is being felt around the world — and now, even above it.

Russia’s top space official, Dmitry Rogozin, has tweeted that the sanctions imposed on his country by the U.S and Europe are “unacceptable.” He said that cooperation with the U.S. and it allies on the International Space Station may no longer be possible.

Rogozin added that the sanctions are intended “to kill the Russian economy, plunge JAMES our people into and bring BERNSTEIN despair our country to its knees.” Normal relations with the U.S. and Europe, he said, would only be possible with the lifting of the “illegal” sanctions — something that is highly unlikely to happen in the near future.

Rogozin, space experts have said, has a habit of popping off. But Andrew Parton, president of the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, said that the notion of Americans, Europeans and Russians working together in space — which they were doing only a few weeks ago — now “seems awkward.”

“We’re almost at war with them,” Parton said.

The Russians were pioneer partners, along with the U.S., the Europeans Space Agency, Canada and Japan, in building the ISS, the largest man-made structure ever constructed and put into space. It had to be assembled in parts, which took place between 1998 and 2000. The first section of the structure was launched in November 1998, aboard a Russian Proton rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodome.

The ISS has been circling the Earth for so long now — it became fully operational in May 2009 with a six-member crew that required two Russian Soyuz “lifeboats” to be docked there at all times — that many Earthlings have pretty much forgotten about it, or don’t think of it much. But it remains a phenomenal vehicle, traveling an eye-popping 17,500 mph at an altitude of some 248 miles above Earth.

Many have argued that the many billions of dollars spent on the ISS could have been better used on Earth. Others say that man was born to explore, and who knows what we’ll find out there one day?

And the ISS has proved valuable. To name a few of its contributions:

The ISS could survive. Just last week, SpaceX, a private company, launched a NASA astronaut and three paying customers to the ISS. Since NASA’s space shuttle program ended in 2011, the agency has relied on Russian Soyuz spacecraft to take our astronauts to the station.

But with commercial space companies revving up, we may be able to elimi-

nate our dependence on the Russians to get us up there.

Russians help guide the ISS, and use their country’s space vehicles to boost the station to its target orbit when it tends to drift lower. These tasks can be taken over, but it will take effort by the rest of the ISS team, and more funding.

The bigger loss, of course, is that yet another tie between major world powers will have been severed. Russian and U.S. diplomats around the world have already been called home. To be sure, Russia must be punished, and punished severely, for its actions in Ukraine. But astronauts and cosmonauts are scientists, and have held themselves above the fray of politics and fraught relationships between their countries. They were able to do so on the most recent return to Earth, in March.

Astronaut Mark Vande Hei worried that he might be left behind because of U.S-Russia tensions, after spending 355 days in space. But the Russians ferried him home safely. Joe Montalbano, NASA’s program manager for the ISS, said that those aboard the station last month were “aware of what’s going on, but they still worked as a team.”

The question is, how long can we remain teammates?

Family stories help the healing

f you don’t have a sister, I urge you to get one, preferably a younger one, so you can boss her around. But in a pinch, any age will do, and life is all about pinches.

My husband recently had surgery to replace a pacemaker, an easy, relatively pain-free event, unless it’s your pacemaker, and your body being altered. My guy is stoic, but he came out of surgery with a corneal abrasion, which was inexplicable on many levels, since the procedure was for his heart. The pain RANDI was extreme and, KREISS although I’m good in a crisis, I found his distress and my helplessness terribly unsettling.

Lots of people offered to help in any way they could. The calls and notes and get-well gifts all lifted us up. But only my sister called and said she was on her way.

She had booked her flight, she was coming for five days, and that was that.

She isn’t the take-over type; that’s my job as the older sister. Once she got here, I still cooked for the three of us and

walked the dog and fetched the meds for the patient. Really, she didn’t do much, unless you count saving my sanity. We discussed important world events, like our hair, and exchanged meaningful gifts: I gave her my Dry Bar brush and she gave me her hot rollers.

Like most sibs our age, we’re the only people on Earth who shared childhood with the same parents.

Ours died in old age, at 95 and 97, so until the last few years, we took care of them together. This shared experience doesn’t imply shared memories, because we have wildly different accounts of our childhood in Cedarhurst with Mom and Dad. What we do when we’re together is mostly nothing, aside from talking or sharing companionable silence while we read or do stuff on our devices. She paints. I write. We agree on most things in the world except her dog, Moe, a.k.a.

Cujo, who is the love of her life, and the only Chihuahua who could take down a cheetah.

We tell stories when we sit around, share the news of our kids and grandkids, and realize that memory is unreliable but that it doesn’t matter. The stories

we tell weave the cloth that holds us together.

I remember the Thanksgiving her 3-year-old daughter decided she hated the tiny bows on her pink velvet pants and jacket. My brother-in-law, who died many years ago, called a timeout, got a scissors and snipped off every one of the dozens of tiny bows. My sister doesn’t remember this at all. I thought it was a remarkable demonstration of parental forbearance.

She also doesn’t remember that our mother assigned me to walk her to her kindergarten when I was in third grade. Every single awful day, my sister would throw herself on the ground, grab my feet and beg me not to leave her there. It didn’t take more than seven or eight years of therapy to deal with that.

One story we both remember was our mother’s “talk” with us about sex. She told us an elaborate story about what the male chicken does with the female chicken.

When I offered intelligent feedback, starting with, “So you mean when you wanted to make a baby, Dad and you…?”

“No!” she screamed. “That’s just with

love kale, but my sister says she would rather chew on her lawn.

My sister and I tend to like the same things: We are political allies, and support folks who are trying to keep our democracy from running aground. Of course, there are exceptions to our harmony. I love kale, and she says she would rather chew on her lawn. I suspect she eats pot pie, which to me is dead chicken in a watery grave.

She asked me if I remembered the time I was being bullied in sixth grade. I walked her to school and told her I would kiss her goodbye before we got to school so the other kids wouldn’t see. She remembered that I didn’t skip the kiss.

I don’t remember that, but I do remember that when I was making out with my boyfriend (now my husband), in the family den back in high school, she would come clomping down the stairs in her rollers and slippers and would accept a quarter to clomp back up. She says she wouldn’t have scrammed for less than 50 cents.

So, you see, while my husband healed, my sister and I passed the time with stories. She didn’t do much, unless you count just showing up. Which was everything.

Congress must preserve quality local journalism

A

free and diverse press is the backbone of a healthy and vibrant democracy. Yet social media and search engine giants like Facebook and Google are taking content from local newspapers — like this one — with little, if any, benefit to those newspapers.

But it is readers who are truly harmed

by Big Tech’s content-filtering and datacollection motives, which ultimately reduce the output of quality journalism.

All of it is simply unfair — to readers, and especially to the newspapers who serve them. Congress must take action to fix this by approving an equitable revenue model similar to what the music industry fought hard for — one that pays royalties to content owners, which ensures that more of that content can be produced in the future.

Let’s not forget the important tenets of local newspapers: ■ Quality journalism is key to sustaining civic society, and we must ensure that those who create journalistic content are compensated for their work.

■ With freedom of the press enshrined in the Constitution, it is imperative to take reasonable and meaningful steps to protect this important institution.

■ Local journalism strengthens communal ties, and provides communities with critical information.

■ The public rightfully trusts its local newspapers. One recent survey showed that nearly 75 percent of Americans have confidence in their local newspaper, compared with just over half for national net-

work and cable news. Just 17 percent trusted social media.

A bipartisan bill known as the Journalism Competition & Preservation Act is making its way through Congress. It’s sponsored by Senators Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, and John Kennedy, a Republican from Louisiana, as well as two congressmen from both sides of the aisle, David Cicilline of Rhode Island and Ken Buck of Colorado.

The bill would enable news publishers to collectively negotiate with Big Tech, driving billions of dollars of subscription and ad dollars back to the publishers who produce good journalism in the first place.

It would include an enforcement mechanism to ensure that negotiations result in payments, that such payments be evenly distributed to small local papers, and that payments reflect investments in reporters and newsrooms. It would allow market forces — not just two companies or even the government — to determine how, and for what price, news content is offered.

American news publications reach more than 135 million people each week.

Yet the revenue of these publications has dropped by more than 50 percent in recent years, fueled by mass — and often involuntary — distribution over dominant digital platforms like Facebook and Google.

Social media might claim that the redistribution of content actually helps newspapers expand their audiences. But in reality, newspapers provide must-have content for these tech platforms that help them capture visitors. Publishers deserve fair compensation for the value of that content, and it’s just not happening from this so-called audience expansion.

LETTERS Anti-Semitic comments were appalling To the Editor: For those who are unfamiliar with me, for nearly 30 years I served in Rockville Centre village government — primarily as the village comptroller.

I am very proud of my decades of service to the village. I am equally proud of being an Orthodox Jew who lives in the Five Towns community. Therefore, given my familiarity with both RVC and the Five Towns, I, more than most, am in a position to respond to the comments made by the final speaker at the April 4 village board meeting.

I was appalled by some of the mischaracterizations and gross exaggerations that were directed against both Orthodox Jews and residents of the Five Towns. I'm certain that in

Because of that, Big Tech can grab as much as 70 percent of every ad dollar from news publishers while hiring zero reporters. Newspapers bear all the expense, while social media giants get all the benefit.

Facebook and Google exert their dominance over the digital marketplace by setting the rules for news publishers and determining how their work is displayed, prioritized and monetized. More than 65 percent of users don’t even click the links offered by Google that would take them to the outlets that are spending the money to create the content they’re reading.

One study showed that 57 percent of New York residents get their news from Facebook. Nearly half use Google as their primary source of news.

If Washington doesn’t intervene soon, we will continue to lose hundreds of newspapers — like this one — across the country, and right here in your hometowns. But Congress needs to know it has your support in order to act.

Our democracy depends on local media like the newspaper you hold in your hands. The idea is so important that it’s part of the First Amendment, enshrined in the Bill of Rights. But local media also depends on you.

ecently I joined the Nassau County Legislature’s majority caucus, numerous veterans groups and County Executive Bruce Blakeman to announce the creation of a program using American Rescue and Recovery Act funds to provide grants of up to $10,000 to every eligible veterans hall in the county.

At the height of the pandemic, many Veterans of Foreign Wars posts and American Legions were facing major difficulties paying rent, property taxes and mainteBILL nance on their venues. Veterans GAYLOR halls were forced by lockdowns to cancel catered events and other functions, and that took away necessary income these halls need to survive. At the time, veterans groups weren’t eligible for ARPA funds under guidance issued by the federal government. After advocating for making those organizations eligible for that federal assistance, we received notification earli-

er this year from the U.S. Treasury Department that ARPA guidelines were being expanded to encompass 501(c)(19) entities, which includes veterans facilities. The new rule took effect on April 1.

Veterans and fraternal halls are part of the very fabric of our community, and there are approximately 100 of them in Nassau County. As a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel who will always be a strong supporter of the brave men and women who have admirably served this county, I know firsthand the important role these facilities serve. With all that veterans have done and are continuing to do for our nation and communities, there never should have been a question of eligibility. I am pleased to know that our efforts proved successful, and that this program will help these veterans groups as part of their ongoing recovery from the pandemic.

I also wanted to mention a couple of other matters of significance. First, residents are reminded that the property tax grievance filing deadline that was extended by the County Legislature to give peo-

LETTERS hindsight, the speaker regrets having offered them. I was also very disappointed that not a single member of the dais felt obliged to rebut any of those comments. I hope that “meeting fatigue” — the fact that the comments were raised at the conclusion of the meeting rather than earlier in the evening — attributed to this failure.

Rockville Centre and the Five Towns actually share so much in common.

Both communities primarily comprise well-educated, deeply religious homeowners whose main concern is raising their children in a well-protected environment. Equally important, homeowners in both communities want to see their property values grow, their public schools prosper (strong property values are dependent on this) and the maintenance of suburbia’s tranquil lifestyle.

I urge the speaker to contact me, because I would love to introduce her to the cornucopia of Orthodox Jewish residents in the Five Towns who she would be proud to have as her neighbors.

Second, earlier this month, the Legislature’s majority caucus and the Town of Oyster Bay initiated a collection drive to assist the people of Ukraine, and opened drop-off locations at various county and town facilities. Recently I helped load the last boxes filled with donations from generous residents to be shipped overseas.

Overall, more than 45,000 pounds of much-needed supplies, including medical items and personal hygiene products, were sent to the Port of New York and New Jersey, where they will be shipped to Poland and ultimately distributed to

nated with me. I, too, am 75 and can’t believe that number. I stopped working in December 2013, and in January 2014 I launched into the next phase of my life — I went back to school. I enrolled at Nassau Community College for what was supposed to be no more than a fouryear stint, planning to take one course per semester. I had the time, and wanted to enjoy the classes, unlike my undergrad and graduate days.

Due to a few hiccups along the way — my husband’s back operations, my lymphoma, selling our house and moving during the pandemic — four years tur ned into 8½. I kept going back, learning computer programs that really challenged me, especially the courses I survived last year in which I created my own portfolio website — I learned to code! It’s been an amazing and rewarding journey, which I completed despite the comments from friends and family: “What do you need this for?” “Are you going to get a job?” (No.) “Why are you making yourself crazy?”

I learned that I could access parts of my brain that I didn’t know existed. I learned that I really am an artist — what a relief to finally own this part of myself. I did have people on my side — a very supportive husband and the professors who took me seriously at Nassau.

Our two kids are doing well, and our grandkids are getting poised to launch.

And yes, we, too, are “drifting to the wings of the family stage.” Despite that,

Finally, the State Legislature is considering legislation that would give the state control of the Nassau University Medical Center, and ultimately lead to partial or complete closure of the facility. NUMC is the only county-owned hospital in Nassau County, and has the only state-of-the-art burn center for miles around, as well as one of the best trauma centers on Long Island. The hospital serves not just residents of the East Meadow area, but also many from across the county who are under-insured, as well as students from the local colleges and many members of nearby minority communities.

This effort is nothing more than a political move by Albany that would hurt Nassau County. NUMC should be run by county residents, for county residents. It should not be a pawn in a political tug of war, and I will continue to fight to ensure that the hospital remains under the county’s control, and not bureaucrats in Albany.
