Making your list and checking it … again The perfect gift isn’t always something you can wrap By Chelle Cordero

A

s the holiday season approaches, even from a distance, we are bombarded with pictures and displays of brightly wrapped gifts under the tree. You become desperate to find the perfect present for each of your chosen recipients, but what happens when that special someone says that he doesn’t want a gift? Or that he already seems to have everything he could want? That’s when you are stymied, determined to find something but unsure of where to start. After all, you want to give something that will wow him. Gift with meaning Giving something more than a useless trinket, or something that just isn’t compatible with a friend’s lifestyle, can be a difficult feat and a burden on your pocketbook. But give a gift that has special meaning, and she will be flattered and honored — a win-win for all. Giving to charity in someone else’s name is a beautiful way to both honor your recipient and help so many others. There are many worthwhile holiday-themed charities to donate, including local and national organizations such as Toys for Tots, Operation Christmas Child, Make-A-Wish-Foundation, the Family Giving Tree, Angel Tree, and Christmas Spirit Foundation. These charities benefit children, families and overseas service members. Other popular charities sponsor research for medical conditions, hospital treatment for children, food pantries, animal rescues and human rights organizations. These are all meaningful ways to honor someone. To make your donation even more meaningful, make it to one of his or her favorite charities. Find something your giftee is passionate about, and donate to that

Give the gift of making a difference this holiday season.

cause. Does she volunteer with an organization or help gather needed supplies for areas impacted by severe weather? Does he foster or adopt rescue pets? Does she spend time fundraising for a local women’s rights group? Still in a quandary? Think of a personal memory you share and how it might relate to a charitable organization. Or choose a charity that might have personally benefitted him or someone he cares about. There are a few websites, such as TisBest, that will let the giftee choose where the donation goes. You simply present them with a gift card, and they choose their favorite charity. If it doesn’t have to be a surprise, you can ask what her favorite charity is and then make the donation, either online or through the mail, specifying that the money is on behalf of “so-andso” Whether or not your gift is a surprise, instead of a gaily wrapped package under the tree, get a card in which you can write a personal note telling the recipient about the donation (the specific amount need not be included). Include the name of the charity and your reasons for choosing it. Give of yourself You could also volunteer alongside your friend, serving food HOLIDAY MAGIC

at a homeless shelter or organizing a book drive for a nursing home or hospital. How about running alongside her in a charity 5K? Or present him with a homemade card and a “coupon” for a certain number of hours to be put toward volunteering together. It’s a double win: You’ll be doing a good deed for a meaningful, and you’ll be spending quality time together. This is also a great gift for the kids in your life. Children learn by example, and it’s important to teach them the value of giving. Put a gift card or cash in their stocking with a note instructing them to donate it to a charity of their choice. Then present them with a “certificate” for their good deed. Holiday shopping can be tricky, and it’s hard to know what presents will be used and appreciated. Rather than gifting your relatives another scented candle (destined to collect dust for years to come), consider a charitable donation. It’s a gift you both can feel good about and a chance to spend a little extra time with your loved ones this holiday season. As Dr. Seuss famously wrote: “It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags ... (Christmas) doesn’t come from a store ... Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.” HERALD COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS

Know a coffee snob?

Thrill the caffeine addicts in your life By Mary Hunt

E

ven if you aren’t one, chances are pretty good you know someone who is a bona fide coffee snob. That’s because unmitigated devotion to coffee has reached epic proportions in the past few years. For these folks, nothing says “I care” more than a gift that affirms said snobbery and love for truly great coffee. Any one of these coffee-related gifts will rack up some major love and respect in return. Beans Coffee snobs grind their beans on demand, which means never offer coffee grinds in a bag or can. While roasted coffee beans might not be the most flashy gift out there, your favorite coffee lover will perk up at the sight of beans from a high-quality roaster like Black Rifle, Death Wish Coffee, Kicking Horse or Koffee Kult. Travel Mug Allowing a batch of freshbrewed hot coffee to go cold is

simply heartbreaking. The Zojirushi stainless steel travel mug will bring a tear to the eye of a true coffee snob. It keeps coffee really hot for a long time. More than that, it is lovely to hold and look at.

The OXO Brew Conical Burr Coffee Grinder is a great piece of machinery. Not only does it look spectacular but it also works really well and is rated highly by those at all levels of snobbery.

Carafe The Zojirushi Premium Thermal 1-Liter Carafe is equally awesome, holding one full liter of brew. It keeps hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold. The thumb button on the handle easily opens the spout for pouring. This type of carafe is a coffee snob’s must-have so that a full fresh pot of brew doesn’t sit there and cook for hours, giving it a terrible burnt taste. Once brewed, simply pour the coffee into this carafe to keep it fresh and hot for hours! Lovely.

Coffee Maker Not all coffee lovers hold to the manual method of brewing. Those who use a machine are very particular. The Cuisinart 14-Cup Coffee Maker is about as good as it can possibly get for coffee makers under $100. First, it heats the water to the ideal and precise temperature. It uses a tiny showerhead to create complete and even saturation for optimal extraction. All of these things are of supreme importance! This particular model comes with a glass carafe that has a stainless steel handle.

Burr Grinder Those in the know insist on crushing our coffee beans, not cutting them with a steel blade. A Burr grinder is a must because it gives consistent particle size for even extraction. Just accept it that a grinder with a blade should be saved for grinding spices.

Your favorite coffee aficionado will perk up at the sight of beans from a high-quality roaster. 10 — November 28, 2019

Curious cookies Four unusual cookies to bake for you and your loved ones By Kristen Castillo

R

seady for curious and delicious yuletide desserts? There’s always a reason to bake a fresh batch of cookies during the holidays, whether for a cookie exchange, a party, Santa’s plate or as part of homemade gift. These cookies are made with unusual ingredients — potato chips, quinoa, instant coffee and breakfast cereal —and the finished treats will wow your taste buds. Holiday treats are known for being rich, decadent and inventive. Baker, food writer and recipe developer Jessie Sheehan delights foodies with her cookbook “The Vintage Baker,” full of midcentury vintage recipes with a 21st-century twist. Look no further than her butterscotch potato chip balls for a sweet and salty eye opener with a burst of flavor. Butterscotch Potato Chip Balls 2 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup butterscotch chips 1 cup unsalted butter, melted 1 cup packed light brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 egg 1 egg yolk 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 5 cups kettle-style potato chips Flaky sea salt for sprinkling Heat oven to 350 F, and line two rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper. Combine flour, baking soda and salt in medium bowl, and whisk. Add butterscotch chips and set aside. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment, cream melted butter and sugars on medium-high speed until thick, light and glossy, 3 to 5 minutes, scraping the bowl with rubber spatula as needed. Decrease mixer to medium-low

speed. Add egg and yolk one at a time, beating well and scraping the bowl with rubber spatula after each addition. Add vanilla, and mix to combine. Add all dry ingredients at once and mix. Remove bowl from stand mixer. Combine and crush potato chips with rubber spatula, and add 3 cups of chips to dough. Leave remaining 2 cups chips in a small bowl. Scoop dough into 1 1/2 tablespoon balls with cookie scoop or measuring spoons. Roll each ball in leftover crushed chips and place on prepared baking sheets. Sprinkle each ball with flaky sea salt. Bake one sheet at a time for 8 to 10 minutes, rotating at halfway point, until lightly browned. After removing sheets from the oven, press each cookie with spatula to slightly flatten. Let cool briefly, and serve warm. Store in an airtight container on the counter for up to three days.

Quinoa Chocolate Chip Cookies 3/4 cup quinoa flakes 3/4 cup quinoa flour 1/2 cup arrowroot starch 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 cup unsweetened applesauce 1 teaspoon pure Madagascar bourbon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon butter emulsion (optional) 1/3 cup granular erythritol 1/2 cup bittersweet chocolate chips Heat oven to 375 F. In large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients and stir/whisk until batter is smooth. On Silpat-lined baking sheet, place 12 evenly spaced dough balls, and smooth each down. Bake for 20 minutes. Let them cool before eating. These freeze well and can be reheated in 30 to 40 seconds. Continued on next page

Rebecca Pytell created the Strength & Sunshine blog to provide fun, delicious, healthy food for those with celiac disease or food allergies. She reinvented the classic cookie with healthy quinoa chocolate chip cookies that pack a “protein punch.” These gluten-free, vegan morsels are so tasty they’ll fool just about anyone.

Can you guess the secret ingredient in these cookies? Hint, it’s a classic salty and crunchy snack. Butterscotch Potato Chip Balls HOLIDAY MAGIC

Mastering gift cards Tips and tricks on how to personalize gift cards for the many recipients in your life By Kristen Castillo

S

o you give friends, family and colleagues gift cards during the holidays? Recent data show consumers like to both give and receive gift cards and digital certificates. Every year, the National Retail Federation surveys consumers on holiday shopping. The 2018 survey of 7,313 adult consumers showed gift cards were the most popular wish-list item for the 12th year in a row. “On average most consumers purchase two gift cards during the holiday season.” That’s according to the CardCash company website, and that number might become even higher as interest grows. In addition to tangible gift cards, consumers love to give e-gift cards, contributing to this $127 billion industry. Since gift cards are the “in” present these days, how can you master gift card giving? Convenience Make sure the gift card will be used. “I love going to the movies, but I’ve had a card sit in my desk for a year, as I never remember to take it with me,” says Nicolas Gremion, a general manager for an audiobook company, who suggests giving gift cards that are easy for the recipient to redeem. Half of the CardCash survey respondents said they like giving a gift card because it allows the recipient to buy what they like; nearly a quarter say gift cards are easier for them as the giftgivers. Convenience goes both ways, but give the recipient the edge. It’s holiday time, after all.

Know the Recipient Give a gift card that fits the recipient’s specific interests. Does he like to read? Does she enjoy getting a massage? Would he or she be okay receiving a digital card? Do they like unwrapping a gift? CardCash’s survey found “millennials are more than twice as likely to have purchased or received a digital gift card,” compared to someone over 35. If you give an e-gift card to the non-tech-savvy senior in your life, will he or she ever use it? If not, it’s a waste of money. Food Restaurant gift cards are a practical choice. “Everyone eats, so consider choosing restaurant gift cards,” suggests business owner Mike Falahee. “You still might run into a ‘I-don’t-like-that’ response, but people are more likely to spend gift cards if they’re food related.” You know your friends and family well, but sometimes you’re still not sure how to personalize a gift card. Buy a gift card to a specific eatery if you know a restaurant your friend loves; you can also invest in a gift card from a delivery platform such as Grubhub.

includes department stores and and niche retailers. Travel Gifting a gift card for experiences can be practical, too. Give your friend or colleague who loves to travel a gas card or a gift card toward a hotel stay or a flight. Those cards can add up to sizable savings when traveling. Credit Card Gift Cards Certified financial analyst Lou Haverty cautions gift card givers that many gift cards go unused because they’re only valid for a specific retailer. He suggests purchasing a Visa, Mastercard or American Express gift card instead. “The one downside is there is usually a small fee to purchase these gift card,” he says, explaining that, comparatively, merchant gift cards for a specific store typically don’t have any fees. He also suggests buying a gift card for Amazon. “The reason this is effective is because you can load Amazon gift cards to your online account immediately,” he says. “This reduces the risk the person will lose or forget the gift card.” Whether you give a gift card you can wrap or one that’s digital, personalize the present with a sincere holiday message.

Major Retailers CardCash says store gift cards are big sellers, too. This

Even though gift cards make for small packages, big thought should go into your gift-giving. 20 — November 28, 2019

Guy gifts

Some top choices for men By Sharon Naylor

W

hat to give to the guys on your list? Men can sometimes be vague when you ask them what they want, and you might get a sweet reply of “I have you, and that’s enough” from your sweetheart. But you’ll still need to wrap something fantastic to make him smile when he opens his gift from you, and you might want to shower him with multiple presents if you know he’s giving you a collection of goodies. And there are likely other men on your list: your dad, your brother and your best guy friend. Because beer is such a hot trend, top gift picks this year include beer recipe kits for the home brewing hobbyist. Add a fun FYI to his gift by

printing out the White Houseshared recipes of what may have been the first beers ever brewed at their location — a honey porter and honey ale — found at the website AskMen. An extra little factoid gift adds interest to his beer recipe or beer glass gift, and it gives him an FYI to share with company during your next get-together with friends or during the family holiday dinner. Scotch and bourbon are also hot gift picks this year, especially small-batch distillery liquors from a well-known brand. A collection of those bottles in his bar would give him extra status by having them to serve to friends. For your sports fan, there are always pro-style jerseys of his favorite player, especially if the player has just been traded to a new team and your guy’s entire jersey and T-shirt collection is outdated. Load him up with NFL, NBA, NHL or MLB gear such as team logo coasters,

drink cozies and coolers for his sports-watching fandom. Speaking of sports watching, you might get him an upgrade in your television plan to a new full sports package or streaming service that expands his game-viewing access. And then there are always tickets to a professional game, which he’ll appreciate when he knows how hard these are to come by. (Be wary of online auction sites, since a disreputable seller could be hawking fake tickets!) Gadgets are always a hot category for men’s gifts, from an upgraded Fitbit for your runner guy, to a GPS golf watch giving the golfer in your life the edge on the links. A gadget timing his grilling will help him pull those filet mignons (which you can give him with the grill timer!) off the fire at the perfect time. And home improvementtype guys love laser levels and other tools that help them get weekend projects done faster. In that category, a gift card to the home improvement store never fails, but these tech “toys” are often something guys wouldn’t indulge in when they’ve gone to the store for fertilizer, furnace filters and light bulbs. Your gift adds some kick to their to-do list and maybe even inspires your guy to paint a few more rooms or hang those photo frames sooner rather than later. “We’d fallen into a rut of giving each other purely practical gifts every year,” Evangeline Descarte, who has been married for a long time. “So in the bag of new white T-shirts and new white socks that he gets every year as one of his gifts, I added some top designer dress socks in bright colors to really stand out.” “They were just a little something indulgent for him, and he was happier about those than he was about the new speaker I bought for his computer.”

Gadgets give guys better game. 24 — November 28, 2019

Skip the generic presents and be a bit more thoughtful. For friends and family, there are plenty of ways you can support a new or lifelong, year-round gardening habit and love of nature.

Nature’s way

Great ideas for the gardeners among us By Sharon Naylor

S

hower the gardeners in your life with the tools they need to grow beautiful and delicious things. Whether your recipient already has a green thumb or is just thinking about starting a new hobby, there are some great gift ideas out there for every level of gardening interest and skill. Herb and Vegetable Cookbook Everyone gets stumped from time-to-time when planning meals or figuring out how best to incorporate a fresh harvest into tonight’s dinner. Consider gifting a little inspiration. Any vegetable gardener will appreciate a great cookbook that focuses on cooking with fresh herbs and vegetables.

28 — November 28, 2019

There are many options — from cookbooks that focus on vegetable side dishes to vegetarian ones where veggie main dishes take center stage. Bring the Outdoors In Why only grow tasty vegetables and beautiful flowers part of the year? For the yearround enthusiast, consider an indoor garden. For example, The Miracle-Gro AeroGarden is a soil-free garden that grows herbs, vegetables, salad greens and flowers five times faster than plants grown in soil. Because it uses advanced hydroponics to create an ideal environment for healthy growth, your gift recipient won’t need expertise for a successful garden to thrive. Plants grown in an Aerogarden receive an ideal balance of water, air and liquid nutrients packed with calcium, iron, magnesium and other key minerals. It also features

a control panel to tell you when to add water, eliminating some of the trickier guesswork. Foodies and health enthusiasts will also be pleased to know that many of the seeds provided are heirloom varieties, and the company sources organic seeds when possible Feed the Birds Help your favorite gardener attract pollinators and add a touch of beauty to the garden with a unique bird feeder. The birds attracted by the feeder will do more than bring beauty to the recipient’s garden — they can help cross pollinate plants and flowers, as well. If you’re crafty, consider making it yourself, or seke out a unique, hand-crafted or vintage treasure. And if your recipient is crafty, consider giving him or her a do-ityourself feeder or birdhouse kit.

By hand, stir in cranberries, pecans and white chocolate chips. Drop dough onto baking sheets in 1/4 cupfuls placed 3 inches apart. Bake for 11 to 13 minutes or until edges are golden brown and center is almost set. Cool on wire racks. To make glaze, whisk all ingredients in small bowl until smooth and with drizzling consistency. A convenience store approach Last-minute ideas you can grab on the go By Simone Slykhous

T

he holiday season is fast approaching. For some people, their lists have been completed since Labor Day. For others, the last couple of weeks before Christmas and Hanukkah mean it is shopping spree time. And then there are those people who push everything to the very last minute. For anyone who has been driving to a holiday party and realized that they forgot a gift, this means you. Luckily, there are still plenty of great gifts out there that can be purchased from the drugstore or convenience shop nearest you. When you’re not sure what to get (and you’re in a last-minute bind), Leslie Pleasant of the blog Today’s Every Mom recommends trying some DIY gift baskets or packages. Culinary kits You can always count on your local CVS or nearby store to have kitchen supplies stocked. Consider a Christmas culinary kit with some cooking utensils, decorative towels, seasonings and maybe a bottle of cooking wine. Then use an “oven glove to hold everything,” says Pleasant. This is a fun way to save some money on gift-wrap as well. To warm up your gift recipient this winter, make a coffee mug kit. This is perfect for a co-worker or neighbor. Add delicious beverage options — hot cocoa, apple cider, tea or coffee — to a festive and decorative mug. Adding mini bottles of Baileys or Kahlua could add an adult twist.

clinical psychologist Raphailia Michael, “Self-care is any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health.” Drugstores and convenience stores are stocked with personal grooming items. For those into facial hair, try crafting a beard care kit. Razors, shaving cream, brushes and beard oil or balm could be combined for a beloved basket for bearded beaus. Including aftershave could give them the opportunity to reenact that classic scene from the classic Christmas movie “Home Alone.” If soaking in a tub relaxes your friends or family, construct a bath kit of bubble bath, bath bombs, Epsom salts, loofahs — and even a rubber ducky! Adding some scented candles or incense could create the ambiance to soothe even the most overworked brains. Consider adding some dark chocolate for a sweet treat, too. Anti-adulting tools As you’re rushing to the nearest store to grab a last-minute gift,

consider leaning into your lessthan-responsible behavior. Curate a grab bag of childish delights! Coloring books, markers, stickers and colored pencils will spark creativity. Maybe your giftee will make their own thank-you note from their stash. Hot Wheels toys or plush stuffed animals are lighthearted additions, and they can be regifted to younger recipients. Though they might not be what your friends and family would purchase themselves, you know they’re curious. “As Seen on TV” goodies are sold most everywhere, and they offer the chance to power-wash a car in minutes, cook a perfect pancake, unscrew impossible-to-open jars, sleep on a bamboo pillow — and more! What all of these last-minute gifts provide is the chance to relax, have fun and enjoy sharing this holiday with your loved ones.

Cute wrapping paper can make inexpensive gifts something special to behold.

Self-care “Self-care” is an extremely prevalent phrase these days and, according to tech experts, wellness and self-care apps are among the most popular apps these days. Can a drugstore pit stop hold the key to self-care? Well, according to 34 — November 28, 2019
