We strive, with the help of the Police Department, to develop children’s character to become fine productive adults in future years. The Bellmore PAL has many programs for all children from Pre School to Senior’s in High School. These programs help the children to learn sportsmanship, and develop athletic skills for future years. Many of our children have come back, as adults, to volunteer as coaches, commissioners or staff members. We need the help of the parents to volunteer in helping the activities we have for the children. By volunteering you not only help the children but also create a safer neighborhood. Making your list and checking it … again The perfect gift isn’t always something you can wrap By Chelle Cordero

s the holiday season approaches, even from a distance, we are bombarded with pictures and displays of brightly wrapped gifts under the tree. You become desperate to find the perfect present for each of your chosen recipients, but what happens when that special someone says that he doesn’t want a gift? Or that he already seems to have everything he could want? That’s when you are stymied, determined to find something but unsure of where to start. After all, you want to give something that will wow him. Gift with meaning Giving something more than a useless trinket, or something that just isn’t compatible with a friend’s lifestyle, can be a difficult feat and a burden on your pocketbook. But give a gift that has special meaning, and she will be flattered and honored — a win-win for all. Giving to charity in someone else’s name is a beautiful way to both honor your recipient and help so many others. There are many worthwhile holiday-themed charities to donate, including local and national organizations such as Toys for Tots, Operation Christmas Child, Make-A-Wish-Foundation, the Family Giving Tree, Angel Tree, and Christmas Spirit Foundation. These charities benefit children, families and overseas service members. Other popular charities sponsor research for medical conditions, hospital treatment for children, food pantries, animal rescues and human rights organizations. These are all meaningful ways to honor someone. To make your donation even more meaningful, make it to one of his or her favorite charities. Find something your giftee is passionate about, and donate to that

cause. Does she volunteer with an organization or help gather needed supplies for areas impacted by severe weather? Does he foster or adopt rescue pets? Does she spend time fundraising for a local women’s rights group? Still in a quandary? Think of a personal memory you share and how it might relate to a charitable organization. Or choose a charity that might have personally benefitted him or someone he cares about. There are a few websites, such as TisBest, that will let the giftee choose where the donation goes. You simply present them with a gift card, and they choose their favorite charity. If it doesn’t have to be a surprise, you can ask what her favorite charity is and then make the donation, either online or through the mail, specifying that the money is on behalf of “so-andso” Whether or not your gift is a surprise, instead of a gaily wrapped package under the tree, get a card in which you can write a personal note telling the recipient about the donation (the specific amount need not be included). Include the name of the charity and your reasons for choosing it. Give of yourself You could also volunteer alongside your friend, serving food HOLIDAY MAGIC

at a homeless shelter or organizing a book drive for a nursing home or hospital. How about running alongside her in a charity 5K? Or present him with a homemade card and a “coupon” for a certain number of hours to be put toward volunteering together. It’s a double win: You’ll be doing a good deed for a meaningful, and you’ll be spending quality time together. This is also a great gift for the kids in your life. Children learn by example, and it’s important to teach them the value of giving. Put a gift card or cash in their stocking with a note instructing them to donate it to a charity of their choice. Then present them with a “certificate” for their good deed. Holiday shopping can be tricky, and it’s hard to know what presents will be used and appreciated. Rather than gifting your relatives another scented candle (destined to collect dust for years to come), consider a charitable donation. It’s a gift you both can feel good about and a chance to spend a little extra time with your loved ones this holiday season. As Dr. Seuss famously wrote: “It came without ribbons. Get ‘em while you can What to expect on those toy lists By Diane Schlindwein

or many folks, it just isn’t the holiday season unless kids have their lists in hand. And Christopher Byrne, of The Toy Guy website, says this year those lists might be long and varied. From preschool to plush “In preschool, it’s all about the characters,” Byrne says. “Peppa Pig from Jazwares is a global sensation, and anything Spin Master makes from Paw Patrol is on fire. For infant toys, the Murari line from PlayMonster is really outstanding.” Of course, stuffed animals are always going to be hot. “The trend this year is toward outrageous, interactive figures,” Byrne says. Three of his favorites are Zuru’s Boppi the Dancing Llama, Hasbro’s FurReal Friends Cubby and Spin Master’s Juno My Baby Elephant. “Boppi is just hilarious to watch and set into action, and both Cubby and Juno have much more interactivity.” Both Byrne and Kaitlin Anilonis, an account coordinator from Coyne PR, agree that kids and parents alike will be enamored by Juno. She has over 150 lifelike movements, including an animated

trunk, floppy moving ears, expressive eyes and a wagging tail. Girl power American Girl, always a must-have every year, is releasing the Smart Girl’s Guide Kit, which aids girls in times when growing up gets them down. Each kit contains an advice book and special accessories. Marketing representative Susan Jevens says the kit addresses anxiety, friendship troubles, social media, self-confidence, cooking, sports and fitness. Also new this year are the American Girl Gift Trunk and an updated American Girl historical line. The new historical line includes refreshed covers and interior illustrations, plus authentic accessories to inspire the imagination. Of course, there is still a whole line of dolls for the girl who dreams of finding a special doll under the tree. The newest addition is Blaire, the 2019 Girl of the Year. In on the action with superheroes Fathers might want their children to have something that reminds them of their own favorite childhood toys. That’s why longtime fans of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are in luck. Representatives from Playmates Toys are expecting “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” action figures and bobbleheads to be on many Christmas wish lists this year. “For older kids and adults, Marvel Avengers from Hasbro, virtually anything from Funko and other collectibles are doing well,” Byrne says. “The 35th anniversary of ‘Ghostbusters’ has inspired some great stuff from Playmobile and LEGO.”

However, if you want a game that will be fun for all, Byrne recommends Pictionary Air from Mattel. “It’s one of my favorite games for this year,” he says. “It’s a stylus that connects wirelessly to a tablet or TV, and the players draw in the air, and the lines they’re making show up on the screen. I think it’s the party game of 2019. It’s great for the whole family.” Byrne has seen many toy frenzies over the decades, but in 2019 he doesn’t foresee any toy being so “hot” that it is unattainable. “There are trends worth mentioning. But frankly, I don’t think there is going to be one,” he says. “By that I mean, with such a diverse and fragmented marketplace, and the ability to get almost anything if you’re willing to pay the price to resellers, the media frenzies that have driven products in the past are unlikely to be repeated.” Whether you’re looking for a family board game, a stuffed animal or a wacky bobblehead, The Toy Guy has you covered. Bake your latkes this Chanukah.You won’t regret it. By Paula Shoyer

veryone loves potato latkes, but no one likes the mess of frying them or the guilt associated with eating them. These latkes are baked in the oven and easily won over my kids. You do need to watch them so they don’t burn; they were done at different times in different ovens. And my pickled applesauce is basically a tangy-spicy applesauce, which we also eat like eating with schnitzel. Latkes may be made two days in advance and reheated in the oven or frozen; applesauce may be made 4 days in advance. You can also serve this with classic applesauce. Potato Latkes 2 tablespons sunflower or safflower oil, or more if needed 1/2 medium onion, quartered 3 scallions, ends trimmed, cut into thin slices or chopped into small pieces 3 medium potatoes (about 1-1/2 pounds), scrubbed clean and unpeeled 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 2 large eggs 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 2 tablespoons potato starch 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper Pickled Applesauce 1 teaspoon sunflower or safflower oil 1/3 cup red onions, chopped into 1/4-inch pieces 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 2 tablespoons light brown sugar 2 apples, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch cubes 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1 cinnamon stick 1/4 teaspoon salt Pinch black pepper To make the latkes, preheat the oven to 450

For a new twist on the holiday favorite, try a baked version.

F. When the oven is hot, pour 2 tablespoons of oil onto 2 jelly roll pans and turn them in every direction so that the oil coats the pans. Heat the pans in the oven for 5 minutes. Place the onions and scallions in the bowl of a food processor and chop them into small pieces. Place them in a medium bowl. Shred the potatoes by hand on the large holes of a box grater or in a food processor with the shredding blade, and place in the bowl. Add the lemon juice, eggs, baking powder, potato starch, salt and pepper and mix well. Very carefully (I mean really carefully; move very slowly) remove one of the pans and use your hands or a spoon to scoop up and drop clumps of the potato mixture, a little less than 1/4 cup, onto the pan. I use my hands. Press the mixture down to flatten it a little. Place the pan in the oven for 10 to 12 minutes and immediately remove the second oiled pan. Repeat the same process with the remaining potato mixture and bake the second pan of latkes for HOLIDAY MAGIC

10 to 12 minutes. Bake them until the edges are well browned, and then with a slotted spatula turn them over and cook the latkes for another 8 to 10 minutes, or until the bottoms are browned. These can be made 2 days in advance and reheated in the oven. Meanwhile, to make the applesauce, heat the oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the onions and cook them for 3 minutes, until they soften. Add the vinegar and brown sugar and cook for another 3 minutes. Add the apples, coriander, ginger, cinnamon stick, salt and pepper, and cook, covered, on low heat for 15 minutes, or until the apples are soft. Let the mixture cool for 10 minutes and then puree it, using an immersion blender or a food processor. The applesauce can be made 4 days in advance and served warm or cold. Makes 25 latkes. 10 luxury wine gifts under $100 By Robert Whitley

gift of wine this holiday season is special on its face because it’s personal. It’s also a minefield for those choosing the gift. Those with little wine experience will have doubts about the quality or the price. Even those who know what they like in a wine might be reluctant to assume others will share their enthusiasm. I will attempt to alleviate a bit of the anxiety by suggesting 10 well-priced (under $100 retail) luxury wines that are universally respected by wine connoisseurs. The following wines are among my personal favorites — wines I would be happy to gift and honored to receive. Black Kite 2016 Pinot Noir, Kite’s Rest, Anderson Valley ($50): Brilliant winemaker Jeff Gaffner convinced the owners to divide their Anderson Valley estate vineyard into three distinct parcels: Redwoods’ Edge, Stony Terrace and River Turn. Kite’s Rest, a blend of those three specific terroirs, combines the elegance and aromatics of Redwood’s Edge with the richness and depth of Stony Terrace and River Turn. You can’t miss with this wine. Cakebread Cellars 2015 Chardonnay Reserve, Carneros ($55): Richer and more layered than Cakebread’s “regular” chardonnay, the reserve hit a home run at the 2018 Critics Challenge in San Diego, where it was named best-of-show white wine. This is a stunning wine that demonstrates California chardonnay can possess power and elegance at the same time. Castello Banfi 2013 Poggio 2013 Poggio Alle Mura Brunello di Montalcino Alle Mura Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Italy ($95): DOCG, Italy ($95): From a special section of the Banfi Estate, Poggio Alle Mura has a long track record of excellence. The 2013 may be the finest vintage yet, and it’s available this year as Banfi celebrates its 40th anniversary in Montalcino. Domaine Carneros by Taittinger 2015 Brut Rose, Carneros ($42): This is a serious sparkling rose from perhaps the finest sparkling wine producer in the United States. Winemaker Eileen Crane oversees production, and the wines reflect her dedication to quality and style. They are impeccable in every way, and this vintage brut rose is a gem. Dutton-Goldfield 2015 Chardonnay, Rued Vineyard ($55): Winemaker Dan Goldfield is perhaps best known for his scintillating single-vineyard pinot noirs. That said, his Rued chardonnay is about as good as California chardonnay gets. You won’t be disappointed. Gloria Ferrer 2007 Carneros Cuvee, Late Disgorged, Carneros ($80): Gloria Ferrer’s prestige cuvee, Carneros Cuvee, gets the same tender, loving care a top-notch HOLIDAY MAGIC

Champagne house would lavish on its $400-a-bottle tetes de cuvee. If you’ve never tasted an aged, mature bubbly, you are in for a treat. Jordan Vineyards 2014 Jordan Vineyards 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley ($56): Valley ($56): This is the best cabernet sauvignon for the price in the world, bar none. And Jordan does it every year! Merry Edwards 2016 Pinot Merry Edwards 2016 Pinot Noir, Olivet Lane, Russian River Valley ($68): Merry, the queen of California pinot noir, retired this year, so this vintage from one of her favorite vineyards is one of her last. Long live the queen! Moet & Chandon 2009 Grand Vintage Brut, Champagne, France ($78): Vintage Champagne from a top house at this price would be hard to pass up. So what are you waiting for? Palmer & Co. Blanc de Blancs, Champagne, France ($75): Palmer’s blanc de blancs is an elegant, sophisticated Champagne, exhibiting exceptional length and richness without losing its subtle touch of minerality and stoniness. Showing notes of citrus, brioche and spice, it is beautiful as an aperitif but more aptly suited for smoked salmon or caviar. Rating: 96. Mumm Napa Blanc de Blancs, Napa County ($24): Mumm’s blanc de blancs is exceptionally complex for a domestic sparkling wine at this price point. Fresh and lively on the palate, the current release shows notes of lemon, apple, vanilla and baking spice; crisp acidity; a creamy, toasty palate; and a long finish. Rating: 92. Mumm Napa Brut Prestige, Napa County ($24): Mumm’s non-vintage brut prestige remains one of the great values in domestic sparkling wine. The current release delivers a creamy palate with mouthwatering acidity, and a bright note of lemon with a hint of spice. Rating: 90. Tasting Notes Wines are rated on a 100-point scale. Wines are chosen for review because they represent outstanding quality or value, and the scores are simply a measure of this reviewer’s enthusiasm for the recommended wine. Wrap it up Creative ideas for gift-wrapping By Kristen Castillo

he holidays are hectic, and gift-wrapping may seem like a chore. Sure, you could cover the gifts in storebought paper or slip them into gift bags, but think again. This is a great opportunity to get creative in wrapping your gifts. “Creatively wrapping a holiday gift shows the recipient that you took time to prepare their gift, that this wasn’t a last-minute gift,” says Alyson Dias, consumer experience director for iLoveToCreate. “With life so often running at warp-speed, it’s nice to remind family and friends that you took time to carefully craft something just for them. It is often the wrapping that is more appreciated than the gift itself. If the gift inside is also hand-crafted, that just makes it even more special. Happiness is handmade.” Creative wrapping usually takes a little (or a lot) more time than traditional wrapping, but it’s not always very expensive. Plus, you can involve the kids because many wrapping projects are familyfriendly. Kid creations. For Malia Britton, an environmentally conscious mother of two young children, holiday gift wrap is as simple as recycling her children’s artwork. “That way, the recipient gets unique, one-of-a-kind gift wrap, my kids get to share their art, and I get to offload the ever-increasing stack of paintings. It’s an all-around win!” says Britton, noting her solution is both green and a cost saver. Gift recipients love the artworkas-gift-wrap, too. “By using my kids art on the outside of their gift, they get a little glimpse into my kids’ creativity and can elect to save it for their walls or keepsake folder if they so choose,” says Britton. Sweet inspiration. Sweet inspiration. Add some holiday flair to your gift giving by adding some sweets to the top of the package. Tie different candies to the gifts’ bows and ribbons. While you don’t want “cookie cutter” holiday wrap, it’s fun and creative to make gift tags by tracing cookie cutter designs onto card stock or plain gift wrap. Consider using cookie cutter designs like stars, trees, snowmen and angels. Then cut, glue, layer and decorate the cutouts any way you want before affixing them to the present. Season’s greetings. Got a stack of last year’s used or unused holiday cards? Give those festive designs a new purpose by trimming the wording, images or characters from the cards and turning them into gift tags. For example, cut out a card’s sparkly tree and glue the cutout to the wrap. From the texture of the cardstock to the color of the images, this form of upcycling can really dress up a gift. Add some shine. Tie an ornament to the top of the gift or tuck one onto the handles of a gift bag. The ornaments can be standard fare or personalized. Either way, they’ll look great on the gift and can be reused on the tree, year after year. Get scrappy. Use scrapbook paper and stickers to create your own gift labels or to decorate wrapping paper and gift bags. HOLIDAY MAGIC

Since scrapbook paper is generally made of a thicker cardstock, it holds up well when used alone, or glued or taped to wrapping paper. Pick a theme. Choose one color, texture or pattern as a giftwrap look with maximum impact. For example, wrap gifts in one color like festive red; focus on the feel of your wrap using smooth paper and satin ribbons; or choose a pattern such as snowmen or reindeer to unify your gifts. Get inspired online. Search craft websites for ideas on ways to create memorable holiday wrap. For example, you can make iLoveToCreate’s “Glitter Gift Boxes” using gift boxes, glitter, foil, glue and a few other supplies. Dana Byerwalter, editor of All Free Christmas Crafts, shares her holiday wrap ideas, including finger-painted gift wrap, which is easy for kids to create using their thumbprints as lights, and making gift boxes out of Christmas card boxes you already have at home. Eco-friendly. “Since I don’t get to wrap gifts often, I like to be creative and eco-friendly by using either chic, reusable tote bags, colorful scarves or old, patterned shirts,” says DIY fashion blogger Tanya Thamkruphat. Use your own fabrics, or buy fabric wraps to easily and stylishly cover a gift.

Mastering gift cards Tips and tricks on how to personalize gift cards for the many recipients in your life By Kristen Castillo

o you give friends, family and colleagues gift cards during the holidays? Recent data show consumers like to both give and receive gift cards and digital certificates. Every year, the National Retail Federation surveys consumers on holiday shopping. The 2018 survey of 7,313 adult consumers showed gift cards were the most popular wish-list item for the 12th year in a row. “On average most consumers purchase two gift cards during the holiday season.” That’s according to the CardCash company website, and that number might become even higher as interest grows. In addition to tangible gift cards, consumers love to give e-gift cards, contributing to this $127 billion industry. Since gift cards are the “in” present these days, how can you master gift card giving? Convenience Make sure the gift card will be used. “I love going to the movies, but I’ve had a card sit in my desk for a year, as I never remember to take it with me,” says Nicolas Gremion, a general manager for an audiobook company, who suggests giving gift cards that are easy for the recipient to redeem. Half of the CardCash survey respondents said they like giving a gift card because it allows the recipient to buy what they like; nearly a quarter say gift cards are easier for them as the giftgivers. Convenience goes both ways, but give the recipient the edge. It’s holiday time, after all.

Know the Recipient Give a gift card that fits the recipient’s specific interests. Does he like to read? Does she enjoy getting a massage? Would he or she be okay receiving a digital card? Do they like unwrapping a gift? CardCash’s survey found “millennials are more than twice as likely to have purchased or received a digital gift card,” compared to someone over 35. If you give an e-gift card to the non-tech-savvy senior in your life, will he or she ever use it? If not, it’s a waste of money. Food Restaurant gift cards are a practical choice. “Everyone eats, so consider choosing restaurant gift cards,” suggests business owner Mike Falahee. “You still might run into a ‘I-don’t-like-that’ response, but people are more likely to spend gift cards if they’re food related.” You know your friends and family well, but sometimes you’re still not sure how to personalize a gift card. Buy a gift card to a specific eatery if you know a restaurant your friend loves; you can also invest in a gift card from a delivery platform such as Grubhub.

He suggests purchasing a Visa, Mastercard or American Express gift card instead. “The one downside is there is usually a small fee to purchase these gift card,” he says, explaining that, comparatively, merchant gift cards for a specific store typically don’t have any fees. He also suggests buying a gift card for Amazon. “The reason this is effective is because you can load Amazon gift cards to your online account immediately,” he says. “This reduces the risk the person will lose or forget the gift card.” Whether you give a gift card you can wrap or one that’s digital, personalize the present with a sincere holiday message.

he holiday season is fast approaching. For some people, their lists have been completed since Labor Day. For others, the last couple of weeks before Christmas and Hanukkah mean it is shopping spree time. And then there are those people who push everything to the very last minute. For anyone who has been driving to a holiday party and realized that they forgot a gift, this means you. Luckily, there are still plenty of great gifts out there that can be purchased from the drugstore or convenience shop nearest you. When you’re not sure what to get (and you’re in a last-minute bind), Leslie Pleasant of the blog Today’s Every Mom recommends trying some DIY gift baskets or packages. Culinary kits You can always count on your local CVS or nearby store to have kitchen supplies stocked. Consider a Christmas culinary kit with some cooking utensils, decorative towels, seasonings and maybe a bottle of cooking wine. Then use an “oven glove to hold everything,” says Pleasant. This is a fun way to save some money on gift-wrap as well. To warm up your gift recipient this winter, make a coffee mug kit. This is perfect for a co-worker or neighbor. Add delicious beverage options — hot cocoa, apple cider, tea or coffee — to a festive and decorative mug. Adding mini bottles of Baileys or Kahlua could add an adult twist.
