A very nerdy holiday
The perfect gifts for the fantasy/saga lover in your life By Alissa Stevens t’s safe to say that the past few years have been some of the best yet for nerds. From comic book superheroes to “Star Wars” to “Game of Thrones,” film sagas and TV shows have been delighting children — and adults — of all ages. Many even say that nerdy is the new cool! This holiday season, skip the graphic tees and transport your nerdy adult loved ones to their favorite galaxy with one of these fun yet practical gifts. Geek out with decor Are people looking to geek out their home offices or refresh their artwork? Saga-inspired decor can make a room feel like home. “Star Wars” fans will appreciate the MokuShop handmade AT-AT wood bookends. This quirky but subtle creative touch to your bookshelf allows you to display everything from your favorite comic books to your “Iron Man” DVDs. The staff at the Nerd Much? website put together a list of “101 Geek Gifts for Nerds” that includes minimalist vintage-looking superhero movie posters (often found on Etsy). Your friends can hang up their favorite DC and Marvel characters in their office, play room or movie room to create a super-cool atmosphere. Wear your favorite epic Those who express themselves through fashion will love themed accessories and clothing. When epic battles are happening “a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away,” or in the year 2364, or in the Seven Kingdoms, a stylish timekeeper will come in handy. Nixon has created an exclusive line of high-end “Star Wars” watches for men and women with subtle saga nods and a 6 — November 29, 2018

classic look. The Han Solo Ascender, for example, has a moon phase display under the hands and blaster pistol details on the side. Streetwear and sleepwear have been created to pay homage to virtually every sci-fi/fantasy world you could think of. You can find the perfect matching onesie sets for your next “Harry Potter” movie marathon, or design custom items. Your loved ones will appreciate the clever and thoughtful gesture. In the kitchen Nerd-themed kitchen gadgets are a surefire way to spice up cooking endeavors. Next time you host a dinner party, display your cheeses and crackers on a “Game of Thrones” “Dinner Is Coming” cutting board. Danny Murphy at BestProducts. com says, “This punny cutting board is sure to bring some fun to the kitchen.” For a shot of nostalgia with your morning brew, buy a heat-sensitive coffee mug licensed by Nintendo. The Nerd Much? staff says that when the mug is empty or when the coffee gets cold, HOLIDAY MAGIC
the mug “features a classic Game Boy system that is apparently turned off. However, when a hot beverage is poured into it, the mug displays the starting screen for the 1989 Game Boy title ‘Super Mario Land.’ It even has that yellow-green background.” Grown-ups who spent their childhoods playing these handheld games will appreciate it. These days, nerds come in all different ages, shapes and sizes. The hardest part about shopping for the geeks in your life this year might be the vast number of cool choices available. So step into their world and discover unique gifts they can enjoy for years to come.

Get ‘em while you can Hot toys to buy this season By Diane Schlindwein ttention parents and grandparents: Toy experts are predicting that gift-givers will shop for both familiar and not-so-familiar requests for the kids on your list this year. From toy pets, to movie sagas, to classic American Girl dolls, there’s plenty to delight children of all ages. Furry friends The newest — and possibly most difficult to find — toys will likely be Scruff-A-Luvs by Moose Toys. Each little adoptable stuffed pet dog, cat or rabbit comes in a box as a matted ball of fur with only its bright eyes showing. Once kids wash, blow-dry and style the hair, their new pet is revealed in all its glory. Each pet comes with a grooming brush, a collar with a nametag and an adoption certificate. The Scruff-A-Luv will teach your little ones to care for creatures. For young dinosaur lovers, Hasbro’s furReal Munchin’ Rex is a soft gift that readily accepts hugs. He comes with a bottle, a broccoli treat and a special cookie. Offer him something to eat and he’ll react with one of almost three dozen sound-and-motion combinations. Keep the food coming and he’ll entertain kids for hours. This little dino is a lovable handful. Magical creatures Unicorns are hot this year, and the WowWee Fingerlings unicorns will be on many wish lists. Gigi is a white unicorn complete with a lovely rainbow tail and mane. Like her predecessors, last year’s wildly popular Fingerlings monkeys, she hugs a child’s finger and responds to touch, motion and noise. Christopher Byrne, content director of Toys,

The Republic Fighter Tank, featured in “The Clone Wars” TV show, has two elevating guns with stud shooters, hidden wheels for a hover look, rear ammo storage, two minifigures and two droid figures. Plain brown paper and a fabric ribbon can make an attractive package under the tree or by the menorah.
Put the earth on your gift list Green holiday gift wrap By Chelle Cordero hen making your holiday shopping list this year, don’t forget to give a gift to our planet and all its inhabitants. According to the Environmental Protection Agency blog, “Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, American household waste increases by more than 25 percent. Trash cans full of holiday food waste, shopping bags, bows and ribbons, packaging, and wrapping paper contribute an additional 1 million tons a week to our landfills.” Reducing waste can cut down greenhouse gas emissions, helps conserve our natural resources and has positive effects for future generations. Here are a few terrific holiday gift wrap alternatives so you can help the environment (and have a bit of family fun at the same time). Wrap away, but don’t be wasteful It’s fun to watch everyone’s eyes light up at the sight of gaily wrapped surprises. But in just minutes, the wrapping is torn off; the bows are 12 — November 29, 2018
scattered; the boxes are ripped open; and there is a pile being dumped into the garbage can for transport to the local dump. Why waste money on throwaway wrapping paper that will have less than a few minutes’ worth of glory and use when you can make a gift presentation that will last? You can still have the pleasure of surprising your loved ones with terrific gifts and even make a commotion about the presentation while you begin to reduce, reuse and recycle. Get creative Plan a family day to make your own wrapping paper. Get a newsprint pad from your favorite art supply store; get a roll of plain craft paper; or even collect a bunch of brown paper shopping bags, and gather around your table with crayons or colored pencils. Draw pictures and colorful designs, and then wrap your holiday gifts with this homemade gift wrap. Make sure the kids sign their artwork. It will meaningful for grandparents to receive a gift adorned with a special wrapping just for them. Adults will also enjoy letting their inner child come out as they decorate. HOLIDAY MAGIC
Add that personal touch Wrap your presents in everyday materials like newspaper, print and all, and tie them with colorful fabric ribbons. It’s inexpensive. The paper is completely biodegradable. And fabric ribbons are reusable. You can use either the comics section with a simple bow or just the printed newspaper (no color or ads) for the classiest look. Stop before you throw out last year’s (or older) colorful road maps and calendars; you can use them to wrap packages instead. Most tissue paper is made from recycled materials (read the package label). If you need to place a gift in a box with tissue, use colorful wrapping for the box. Fabrics are a completely reusable option. Silk scarves, dinner napkins and other swatches of fabric can be pulled around a package and the corners tied together for a touch of whimsy. It’s easy to make the wrapping part of the present, too: Use a small canvas tote bag for your favorite book lover. A decorative Tshirt can wrap an odd-shaped gift or a doll. Stuff a manicure set into cotton gloves. Wrap a recipe book with a cooking apron. Or bundle personal toiletries in a bath towel. HERALD COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS

Gifts from the future
What to get your tech-savvy loved ones By Madison Hurr t’s that time of year again: Bells are ringing, children are singing and you should probably be buying gifts for all your family members soon. You’ve brainstormed for hours, but perhaps the creative juices just aren’t flowing after all these years of holiday gift-giving. Gift-giving is notoriously difficult and stressful, even for those whom you know well and love. Luckily, there still are novel, interesting gifts out there for everyone from your daughter-in-law who seems to already own everything to your second cousin who always seems to be using new technology. Here are a few ideas: Stitch Fix While some online gift services leave your loved one a generic fruit bouquet or a bundle of socks they’ll never wear, Stitch Fix takes online personalization to a new realm: wardrobes. After an initial style quiz where you can set your budget, size and style preferences, a Stitch Fix personal stylist will curate and send you a “fix” of five pieces (clothing, shoes and accessories) that fit your unique style. After a $20 styling fee, which can be applied to the price of any item you decide to buy, you can try everything on and decide which items you’d like to keep. There are no upfront payments, and returns are free. If you don’t know the lucky gift recipient’s size or style preferences, Stitch Fix also offers gift cards. This is a great option for anyone from the family fashionista to the uncle who rotates through the same four buttondowns each week. TaoTronics Bluetooth Earphones A lot more af16 — November 29, 2018

fordable than $160 Airpods, these Bluetooth earphones sell for less than $30 on Amazon and come in a variety of colors. They come with different earpiece sizes to ensure they stay snug in your ears. The backs of the earphones are magnetic, so you can connect them and keep them around your neck while you’re not using them. The battery is rechargeable, and a full charge allows for five hours of continuous play time. These headphones are a perfect gift for your niece who likes to listen to music while she jogs and for anyone else you know who still uses corded earphones and could use a wireless update. Get these for convenient, high-quality audio that doesn’t break the bank! Mobile Photo Printer Nowadays, smartphones have largely taken over the role of DSLR and compact cameras. While it’s wonderful and convenient that so many smartphone users now store their images on the cloud, this means that fewer and fewer people are actually printing out photos to enjoy and share. Mobile photo printers make this HOLIDAY MAGIC
process easy — instead of going to the local drugstore to print out photos, you can now print them straight from your smartphone’s camera roll or your social media accounts, all from the comfort of your own home. A few good options include the HP Sprocket, the Kodak Instant Photo Printer and the Polaroid Zip. Away Luggage Perfect for your favorite world traveler, Away brand luggage has become the “it” luggage of today. The New York City-based travel and lifestyle brand was founded in 2015. With sleek and minimalist travel products, Away prides itself on its motto: “First class luggage at a coach price.” These durable suitcases, available in six different sizes, feature a built in, ejectable battery to charge your phone (up to five charges), interior compartments (one for clothes and one for harder items like shoes and toiletries) and 360-degree rotating wheels. The suitcases’ outer shells are strong yet light, with the smallest carry-on size weighing in at only seven pounds.

thick sliced bacon 2 teaspoons ground black pepper Heat oven to 375 F. Cut dates in half, lengthwise. Cut brie into bite-size pieces, about the size of peanuts. Place one piece of Brie and four almond pieces on each open date half. Place other half on top. Quarter bacon slices, wrap tightly around stuffed dates and secure with toothpicks. Sprinkle with pepper. Line baking sheet with foil and place wrapped dates on top. Bake 15 minutes, or until bacon is crispy. Serve warm. Yields 36 poppers. Finely chop oregano and peppercorns, and finely mince thyme and garlic. HOLIDAY MAGIC
To make marinade: Whisk vinegar with oil, oregano, peppercorns, thyme and garlic. Layer cheese, olives and leeks inside jar. Cover with marinade and seal tightly. Place jar in refrigerator to marinate 1 day. For best results, use within 3 days. Holiday Deviled Eggs 6 eggs 1/8 teaspoon salt 1//8 teaspoon pepper 1 teaspoon white vinegar 1 teaspoon mustard 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1 cup shredded cheese Topping options: Paprika Parsley Bacon Shredded cheese Cooked crab meat Scallions Boil large pot of water. Carefully add eggs and boil on high 2 minutes then simmer 13 minutes. While eggs cook, chop parsley and scallions, if desired. Once eggs are cooked, transfer to bowl of ice water; cool 8-10 minutes. Peel eggs and cut in half lengthwise. Separate egg yolks into another bowl. Reserve egg white halves. Continued on page 39 HERALD COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS

Deck the bookshelves
Holiday children’s books bring fun to December By Lee Littlewood ooks about upcoming holidays provide anticipatory excitement and activities for children. These new releases will help kids weather December school days and look forward to holiday celebrations. “Santa, Please Bring Me a Gnome,” by An Swerts; illustrations by Eline van Lindenhuizen; Clavis New York; 28 pages; $17.99 This homey, whimsical story, translated to English from Dutch, introduces young Tess, who just wants a gnome friend for Christmas. Grandma and Grandpa help her build dollhouse furniture and sew gnome clothing, and Tess leaves an orange slice out for him. But when Christmas morning comes, there isn’t a gnome downstairs. What Tess finds instead is a hamster alongside a letter from Santa explaining that Gerard the Gnome was packed and ready to go until he rescued a scared hamster that needed a home. Young children will enjoy the happy ending and the funny rounded illustrations. “Jingle Bells,” by Susan Jeffers; HarperCollins; 32 pages; $17.99 The classic song “Jingle Bells” has been sung time and time again. What makes Susan Jeffers’ new picture book different is her lively winter scenes, large emboldened text, hidden animals and silent side stories on every page. A girl, a boy, a pony and a mischievous dog journey to Grandma’s house, and the dog often jumps out of the sleigh to interact with hidden creatures. This “Jingle Bells” is a perfect, jolly holiday picture book with lots to gaze upon. It also includes a quiz about which animals to find. 30 — November 29, 2018
Encourage young readers with some of the latest holiday-themed books.
Gift Boxes to Decorate and Make Christmas,” by Sarah Walsh; Nosy Crow/Candlewick Press; 50 pages; $15.99 Engaging children in holiday preparations and decorations is a fun way for them to help. This big sturdy book of 24 uncolored cardstock boxes to cut out, fold and color lets kids be more involved in the giving aspect of Christmas. Sarah Walsh’s artsy, folksy scenes feature gingerbread people, reindeer, ornaments, stockings, owls and other wintry, nonreligious but homey holiday images. “Queen of the Hanukkah Dosas,” by Pamela Ehrenberg; pictures by Anjan Sarkar; 32 pages; $14.99 “Making Indian food that my mom ate as a kid for a Jewish holiday that my dad grew up with -- that was a lucky combination,” explains a boy with a mixed-race family and an overactive little sister as they prepare for Hanukkah. The only time little Sadie will stop climbing things is when her brother sings, “ had a little dosa; I made it out of dai” while their family HOLIDAY MAGIC
cooks for the holiday. This zesty, funny multicultural story has so many layers: sibling relationships, the smells and love of cooking together, a lovely look at ethnicities and the all-encompassing family joy of the holidays. “Bear’s Merry Book of Hidden Things,” by Gergely Dudas; HarperCollins; 32 pages; $14.99 Bear really loves Christmas but needs lots of help to get ready for his party. He needs help locating items within busy, colorful scenes of a market, a crowd of gingerbread cookies, a page of presents, holiday birds in hats, a poinsettia page and a penguin gaggle. Readers search the crowded pages for things needed — a mug of hot cocoa among the penguins, a shy turtledove hiding among snowmen, a sparkly star in a group of festive foxes. The scenes aren’t quite as small or busy as “Where’s Waldo?” but are perfect for smaller kids and those who want to get to the funny finale: Bear exhausted on his bed.

Traditional Latkes
Sweet Potato Latkes
Butternut Squash Latkes
In the holiday kitchen
Traditional Hanukkah treats always have a place on the table t will soon be time to feast on some luscious, crispy potato latkes. In fact, why not put a new twist on the latke tradition and fry up a bunch of different versions and judge which type is the best – sort of a “Latke Top Chef”? Traditional Latkes Makes approximately 12 palm-sized latkes 4 medium potatoes 1 medium onion 2 eggs 1/2 cup matzah meal (flour or bread crumbs can be substituted) 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon each salt and black pepper (more or less to taste) Vegetable oil Shred the potatoes and onion into a large bowl. Press out all excess liquid. Add eggs and mix well. Add matzah meal gradually while mixing until the batter is doughy, not too dry. (you may not need the whole amount, 34 — November 29, 2018
depending on how well you drained the veggies). Add the baking powder, salt and pepper and mix well. Heat about 1/2 inch of oil to medium-high heat. Form the batter into thin patties about the size of your palm. Fry batter in oil. Be patient: this takes time, and too much flipping will burn the outside without cooking the inside. Flip when the bottom is golden brown. Place finished latkes on paper towels to drain. Sweet Potato Latkes 1 pound sweet potatoes, peeled and coarsely grated 2 scallions, finely chopped 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 3/4 cup vegetable oil Stir together potatoes, scallions, flour, eggs, salt, and pepper. Heat oil in a deep 12-inch nonstick skillet over moderately high heat until hot but not smoking. Working in batches of 4, spoon 1/8 cup potato mixture per latke into oil and flatten to 3-inch diameter with a slotted spatula. Reduce heat to moderate HOLIDAY MAGIC
and cook until golden, about 1 1/2 minutes on each side. Transfer latkes with spatula to paper towels to drain. Butternut Squash Latkes 2 cups grated russet potatoes 4 cups grated butternut squash 1 small onion, grated 2 eggs ¼ cup matzah meal (or flour) 2 teaspoons salt Pinch of black pepper 1 teaspoon baking powder 4 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped Vegetable oil for frying Place the grated potato, squash and onion in a bowl. Mix in the eggs, matzah meal (or flour), salt, pepper, baking powder and dill. Let sit 10 minutes to thicken. While the mixture is resting, fill a pan ½-inch deep with vegetable oil. Heat until mixture is hot, but not smoking (a good test is dropping a bit of latke batter in the pan — if it sizzles, it’s ready). With a tablespoon, carefully scoop the latke batter into the oil. Fry for 1 minute on each side and transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. Let cool for 2 to 3 minutes and serve immediately with sour cream and applesauce. HERALD COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS

Foodie items for an aspiring chef By Teresa Curto ith the flood of photos showcasing drool-worthy meals on social media, it’s likely that there is a self-proclaimed “foodie” in your life. Read ahead for perfect gift ideas at every price point that will delight aspiring chefs. Veggie Bullet The Veggie Bullet is a food prep system that makes some of the more tedious kitchen tasks take mere seconds. With attachments for slicing and shredding, a cutting board and knife are not required to end up with perfectly sliced potatoes. Perhaps the most novel of the Veggie Bullet’s abilities is the spiralizing function. Spiralizing different types of squashes for a low-calorie substitute for pasta is all the rage for people looking for ways to slash calories from their diets. Vitamix The Vitamix is a high-powered blender that boasts the ability to do much more than make smoothies. It has the power to 38 — November 29, 2018
create nut butters, pestos and soups without burning out the motor or clogging up the blades. The Vitamix has gained popularity in its ability to prepare many of the trendiest food items. Riced cauliflower is a healthy alternative to other starches and is easiest when prepared in a high-speed blender such as this one. Pureed cashews mixed with a few different seasonings and nutritional yeast takes on a likeless to nacho cheese and is a tasty alternative among those looking to incorporate more plants into their diet.
loved by all.
Kitchenaid Mixer The image of the colorful Kitchenaid stand mixer sitting on the gleaming kitchen counter is iconic. Luckily, the Kitchenaid stand mixer is not only pretty but also extremely useful. Of course, whipping up cookie dough, cupcake batter and cake frosting is a breeze with this mixer. However, Kitchenaid mixers also come with a number of attachments that enable them to be used for more than just baking. Pizza dough, bread and pasta can be created with this handy mixer as well. The options are overwhelming, and it’s sure to be
Rice cooker These days, a rice cooker can do much more than just cook rice. With additional cooking settings, such as oatmeal/porridge, slow cooker or steam, a rice cooker can cook an entire meal. There are many brands and models of rice cookers that are relatively affordable, too.

Immersion blender For those who do their cooking in a small kitchen or are cooking meals for one or two, finding modestly sized alternatives to large kitchen appliances can be a challenge. An immersion blender is significantly more compact than the traditional blender, and does many of the same functions efficiently. An immersion blender can be used directly in a pot to create smooth soups and can also be used to make a smoothie for one, leaving less mess to clean up.

when it comes to preparing the main ingredient, the lettuce. Rather than waste too much time — and paper towels — washing and drying lettuce before cutting it up, get a salad spinner to do the work with very little waste. The rinsed lettuce is simply placed inside the bowl and the centrifugal
force from making the bowl spin removes the excess water from the leaves. No more soggy salads for your friends and family! Fruit Slicer There are a number of tiny kitchen gadgets available on the market that were created to make cutting fruit less difficult — and messy. In fact,
there are tools that can slice strawberries and bananas, core pineapples, and even peel those tough oranges. Apple corers are some of the most popular of these gadgets. Having a freshly cut apple in seconds is a gift that most would smile about!

Combine egg yolks with salt, pepper, vinegar and mustard. Add shredded cheese and mayonnaise; mix until smooth. Spoon about 1 tablespoon of yolk mixture into each egg white half. Add toppings, as desired. For classic deviled eggs, sprinkle paprika and chopped parsley over eggs. For a savory alternative, cook four strips of bacon and chop. Top eggs with chopped bacon and shredded cheese. For a unique variation, try topping eggs with cooked crab meat and chopped scallions. ‘Tis the season
Expert tips for seamless hosting s we gear up for the busy holiday season, a foolproof plan is essential for throwing an unforgettable party everyone will be talking about. Whether it’s a casual weekend brunch, formal sit-down dinner or a glitzy cocktail party, you want to make sure the atmosphere is set, and that you’re party ready. Interior designer and artistic advisor to LG Studio appliances, Nate Berkus, is not just a design guru but also an expert party planner and host. “The key to minimizing stress during the holiday entertaining season is to keep things simple, and be as prepared as possible,” Berkus says. ”Making sure everyone, including the host, is relaxed and enjoying themselves is the most important element of a good party. Whether it’s the food, the decor and anything in between, nothing should feel uptight or overcomplicated.” Berkus shares his best holiday entertaining tips — from the festive to the practical and, of course, always stylish. It’s OK to leave the cooking to someone else Don’t let the fact that you don’t like to cook stop you from throwing a festive holiday get together. Call your favorite restaurant and have them cater it. Decant the dishes on to beautiful plates, platters and bowls. No one will know you ordered in — unless you want to tell them! Make sure your kitchen is ready Fact: the kitchen ends up becoming command central at any party. Guests love to congregate there, despite your best efforts otherwise. Embrace the fact 42 — November 29, 2018
Think chic, and best of all, easy, when it comes to your holiday gathering.
that people will gather at your kitchen island, and make it part of the party, whether it’s setting up a food or drink station or adding in extra seating. Nothing feels more familiar and welcoming than a kitchen, especially during the holidays. If you’re planning on doing some kitchen renovation or need to replace an appliance, it’s also important to make smart choices when it comes to your appliances, so they can do your work for you — and look good doing it. Prepare as much as you can in advance When you entertain, you want to be able to greet each and every guest as they arrive, and be a part of the party. Have your holiday cocktail already mixed and ready to go, the wine open and the sparkling water set up at a bar where guests can help themselves. Every horizontal space is an opportunity, so use trays, side tables and your kitchen island to set up food stations. You want your guests to feel at home.
for traditional red and green decor, but the truth is it’s much easier to work with a neutral palette. Use natural materials like woven baskets and mats, and layer in metallic accents. Things like brass candle holders and napkin rings will instantly up the glam factor. Pull greenery from the garden, and finish off your tablescape with candles. Mix up the seating chart If you’re doing a sit down dinner, change things up by seating the host in the middle of the table, rather than at the end, and plan out who sits around them. Your goal is to have people get to know each other, and spark unexpected connections and conversations. And nothing is chicer than a beautifully prepared place card at each setting. Your guests can also take it with them, as a small memento from the night.
