Well, shoppers beware! Now, with the holiday season 2014 under way, the kids on your gift list will, of course, want the latest and coolest toys.
Barbie knows best If your daughter is computer-savvy — who isn’t these days? — those in the know are hot on the Barbie Fashion Design Maker. “Every parent knows how difficult it is to pull kids away from tech devices these days. Ready for action Byrne admits to being a “big kid at heart,” as well as a toy expert. That’s why he recommends a few “blaster” toys for boys. The Zing Firetek Bow shoots well and “is one of my faves of the year,” Byrne says.“It lights up!” And Nerf lovers won’t be disappointed with the Nerf Thunderbow, he adds.“While we are in the blaster category, this one is amazing!” he says. Of course, parents should make sure kids have plenty of room to play with these action-packed toys. One of the season’s hottest toys might just be as popular with parents and grandparents as it will with the kids. Hot Wheels Street Hawks are expected to fly off the shelves as soon as they are stocked, because both boys and men are begging for them. The highly sought-after flying car is both an RC vehicle, which allows the flying car to be steered along the ground, as well as in the air as a plane. Byrne says the Street Hawk “is incredible” and agrees that dads might be borrowing the toy from their sons. “This toy really is terrific,” he says.“It’s easy to use, and it brings a big ‘wow’ when it takes off.” If you haven’t already purchased any of these hot toys, Byrne recommends shopping now to assure that you’ll be able to put a “Check, got that one!” on your child’s Christmas list.
“Mathematical foundations provide the building blocks for future mathematical success, both in school and beyond,” says Dr. Francis (Skip) Fennell, mathematics educator. “Toys that emphasize numbers, counting and beginning concepts with whole number operations will develop, support and encourage these crucial concepts and skills.” The Count & Chomp Dino, for example, introduces children to numbers, colors, shapes and foods.
Age-appropriate Keep kids challenged with educational toys that are age-appropriate, so they are never bored or frustrated. Consider child-sized, kid-friendly tablets that are packed with educational, stage-based learning content. “Children’s brains are developing at a remarkable speed,” says Dr. Lise Eliot, an early childhood development expert.“Their toys should keep up with that growth.”
Full STEAM ahead Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (collectively known as STEM) have gained more visibility in schools, along with the addition of arts to form STEAM. However, says Dr. Carla C. Johnson, science and STEM expert, “it is still crucial to cultivate skills in these subjects and implement them in everyday learning. Educational toys can help kids develop self-confidence in the use and application of these important disciplines.”
Build vocabulary Children absorb new information like sponges. Take advantage of their blossoming interests with interactive toys that highlight letters of the alphabet, the sounds letters make and vocabulary. “Above all, don’t forget the importance of reading to and with your children often,” says early childhood language and reading expert Dr. Deborah Sharp Libby.
Choose wisely Don’t get carried away with the bells and whistles. You and your kids will quickly look past those. Instead, look for toys that actively engage your kids through technology, by deeply integrating games and learning.

Grease a 13x9 inch baking pan. Beat butter in a large mixing bowl until creamy. Beat in flour, sugar and salt until crumbly. With floured fingers, press two cups crumb mixture onto bottom of prepared baking pan; reserve remaining mixture. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Combine 1 cup morsels & sweetened condensed milk in a small heavy duty saucepan. Warm over low heat, stirring until smooth. Stir in vanilla extract. Spread over hot crust. Stir nuts and remaining morsels into reserved crumb mixture, sprinkle over chocolate filling. Bake for 25 – 30 minutes or until center is set. Cool in pan on wire rack.
