a letter from the
publisher The coronavirus crisis that erupted in March and carried on through early June in New York shook all of us to our core. Oceanside and Island Park, however, remain strong. They are communities full of fighters. Superstorm Sandy, which ravaged the South Shore, proved that. The storm pummeled our shores, but it never defeated our indomitable spirit to survive and thrive. Just as we saw in Sandy's wake, neighbors Stuart are now helping neighbors through the Covid-19 Richner crisis, delivering food and medical supplies to vulnerable residents, providing meals for the jobless and just checking in on one another. Thankfully, as of this writing in early August, the coronavirus infection rate had dropped below 1 percent in New York. Let us hope and pray it remains at or falls below that level so people stay safe, and we can continue our successful reopening of the economy. That will depend on all of us doing our parts — wearing our facial covers, maintaining social distance — not only today and tomorrow, but also likely for months to come. Throughout the crisis, the Oceanside/Island Herald continued to provide invaluable news to the community, incuding information on institution closings, new safety protocols and, unfortunately, remembrances of lives lost. I want to thank our journalists for their commitment to the community. Our staff, categorized as essential workers by Governor Cuomo, were out in the field regularly, even during the height of the pandemic, to ensure people who work and live in Oceanside and Island Park had access to the best and most up-to-date information. Additionally, Richner Communications, the parent company of the Oceanside/Island Park, was proud to provide $500,000 in small business marketing grants to entrepreneurs across the South Shore, including many in the village. HISTORICAL TIMELINE •1680
Jeremiah Hobart, minister of St. George’s Church in Hempstead, is gifted 100 acres of land near the south bay after running into financial problems. The hook-shaped piece of land gave Oceanside its first name: Christian Hook.
•1833
Christian Hook officially becomes a public school district called Hempstead District No. 11, with a one-room schoolhouse on the corner of Oceanside and Foxhurst roads.
•1864
Christian Hook is renamed Oceanville. Locals who worked in the oyster industry felt it would be easier to sell their products if the community’s name had a more nautical ring to it.
•1871
Oceanside’s First Presbyterian Church is constructed with the Rev. Marcus Burr as its first pastor. The congregation originally had 10 members, but grew to a major community hub.
•1896
Oceanside’s First United Methodist Church is constructed, with the Rev. R. Stanley Povey serving as its first full-time pastor.
•1776
Loyalists to King George in Christian Hook aided the British in their campaign to capture New York City in the Battle of Long Island, in which the British expelled Washington’s army from the area.
•1860s
Mott’s Landing in Christian Hook, named for Capt. William Mott who lived in the area, becomes a major center of the oyster industry. The oysters were harvested for sale in New York City.
•1867
The area’s first major railroad line opens, with the nearest stop to Oceanville in an area that became Rockville Centre. The development allowed for easier transport of oysters, but also brought a great deal of newcomers.
•1889
Oceanville applies for a post office, with Lorenzo Davison, owner of a popular general store in the area, to serve as the neighborhood’s first postmaster. Because the name Oceanville was in use at two other post offices, the community’s name was changed to Oceanside.

A group of 20 men form Oceanside’s first fire company, named Salamander, after a fire destroyed a major farmhouse. Shortly after in the same year, Columbia Engine Company would form.

The Oceanside train station is constructed.

Oceanside produces the Boy Scouts of America’s first Eagle Scout, Arthur Eldred, two years after the organization’s founding
Oceanside earns the grim distinction of being the site of Nassau County’s first murder after its incorporation earlier that year. It arose out of a dispute when a man named Thomas Nickerson refused to heed a warning by resident Samuel Ousterman after he called on Ousterman’s maid.

A trolley line begins rolling through Oceanside, with nine stops in the hamlet.

The Baumann Bus Company is founded by Bob Baumann after securing a contract with the Oceanside School District. The buses originally transported children to his summer camp, which opened the year before.

Oceanside’s high school teams are dubbed the Sailors after cheerleader Joe DeBaun began wearing a sailor outfit to games. He would meet his future wife, Edyth, at a football game while she was cheering for the Woodmere team. He graduated in 1938.

Island Park
HISTORICAL TIMELINE • 1665
The English were the first white settlers in Island Park. They raised hogs on the drier portions of the island, and coined its first name: Hog Island.
• 1851
Peter Barnum purchased various lands on the South Shore of Long Island, which were then part of Queens County, amassing a fortune.
• 1874
Barnum’s widow, Sara Ann, purchased Hog Island and sold it to Queens County for $13,000, at which point it became the site of the county’s poor farm and a smallpox hospital. It was at this point that Hog Island was renamed to Barnum Island in her honor.
• 1921
The Island Park-Long Beach Corporation purchased the lands of Barnum and Harbor islands, renaming the area Island Park, with the intention of turning it into a resort center. The corporation backfilled many of the low-lying marsh areas with mud and established some of Island Park’s first utilities.
• 1920s
Island Park’s first school, firehouse and church were established, but the area remained a summer destination for many, and not a permanent place of residence.
• 1945
Pop’s Liquor Store opens on Long Beach Road.
• 1956
The Long Island Lighting Company constructs unit one of the E.F. Barrett power station, straddling the border between Oceanside and Island Park.
• 1780
During the American Revolution, Hog Island was the site of multiple battles, including when the British warship “Galatea” pursued an American sloop through Jones Inlet, forcing it ashore on Hog Island, where the British captured most of its 52-man crew.

The Long Island Rail Road laid its first track through the area in a line that ran from New York City to Long Beach.
• 1910
Developers Frank Lawson and William Austin sought to develop Barnum Island into the “Venice of the United States,” with canals running throughout. The plans were shelved, however, with the outbreak of World War I.
• 1926
The Village of Island Park is founded, with a population of roughly 1,000 who had largely moved into the area during the building boom in the 1920s that occurred on the southern portion of the island. Harbor Island remained largely undeveloped, with only a handful of fishing shacks.

Casino Beach, which would later be renamed Masone Beach, becomes a popular destination for summer vacationers.
• 1950s
A population influx leads to the development of Barnum and Harbor islands.
• 1960s
Beach bungalow homes in Island Park are converted to winter homes for year-round use.

LILCO constructs unit two of E.F. Barrett, bringing its power generation capacity up to nearly 400 megawatts.

A United States census reveals Island Park’s population had peaked at nearly 6,000.

Bank of America agrees to gift its Island Park branch building to the village government for use as its Village Hall.

A federal judge files a civil-rights suit against Island Park, alleging village officials excluded black and Hispanic applicants for federally subsidized housing intended for low-income residents, instead awarding them to friends and family.

Island Park schools introduce the option for middle school graduates to attend Long Beach High School.

Libraries remain vital resources amid pandemic By Mike Smollins and Briana Bonfiglio Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, the Oceanside and Island Park libraries have remained vital resources to their communities. Though the Oceanside Library’s doors were closed during the pandemic, it launched dozens of online programs and projects designed to provide the community with information, education and entertainment. It hosted six to 10 online programs per day, including exercise classes, teen readings, book chats and more. It also began offering curbside book pick-up in June. “As soon as we closed, our staff held numerous teleconferences and shared ideas on how we could continue to serve the public,” Library Director Christina Marra said. In June, voters also approved the plans for Vision 2020, a $33.5 million bond to upgrade some of the library’s rooms, enable the facility to host
more programs and shows, and enhance security while making the building more environmentally friendly. The Island Park Public Library also offered curbside pick-up after the pandemic struck, while supplying the community with many online and at-home activities, such as Zoom book discussions, story-time video, LEGO challenges and a Spring Reading Challenge. “It’s’ very frustrating to not be back at our building,” Library Director Jessica Koenig told the Herald in May, “but we want everyone to know that we’re still here virtually, and we’re doing a lot of work behind the scenes to keep people connected to each other.” Courtesy Island Park Public Library

I.P. schools ready for uncertain future By Briana Bonfiglio Families and school officials adjusted to a new set of circumstances over the last three-plus months of the 2019-20 school year as students learned at home via remote classes response to the coronavirus. Google Classroom and FaceTime replaced inperson instruction and hanging out with friends for students across the district, and at press time in early August, officials were still mulling what the year will look like. When the pandemic first hit, school officials implemented a class directory for both Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School and Lincoln Orens Middle School on the disrict’s website, where teachers began posting virtual assignments. Superintendent Dr. Rosmarie Bovino regularly posted updates to parents about remote learning. She encouraged students and parents to email teachers with any technical issues or confusion around concepts or instructions about remote learning. In one letter to the community in March, she suggested typing, “virtual hand raise” in the subject line so that teachers could prioritize those emails. “They know ‘virtual hand raise’ means a student cannot move forward with learning without assistance,” she explained at the time. Though plans for the fall were still being developed, voters approved the district’s $40.6 million for the 2020-21 school year, which includes Covid-19 preparations, such as technology for students and protective supplies for school buildings, and maintains all programs from 2019-20. The district will expand its “blended learning model” next year, which entails more digital engagement paired with traditional instruction. This will require supplying third- and fourth-graders with Chromebooks; children in higher grades already use them. It also requires repurposing the district’s iPads for use by kindergarteners to second-graders. Bovino explained that this technology would be especially useful in a situation in which stu-
dents may need to move to remote learning for a few days if someone at school were to contract Covid-19 and cleaning needed to be done. Another added expense is for a program called ClassLink, which will connect all of a student’s multiple log-ins to one account. Once students log into the device, they will have internet access and be logged into all their district-approved applications. “This is going to be wonderful,” Bovino said. “We’re very excited about this, and we have a big plan in place to get all these devices ready for the beginning of August for summer reading.” Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the district will purchase sanitization supplies and equipment for custodians. ith a population hovering around 4,000, Island Park is a small place with a big community spirit. Much as residents came together in the aftermath of the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, Island Parkers stuck together through the coronavirus, organizing groups to support front-line workers and local businesses, making masks and banding together to make sure the community spirit shined in a dark time. “This pandemic, while horrific, is a remarkable tribute to Island Parkers,” Mayor Michael McGinty said. “It would be impossible to mention everyone who has sent me a text or called me on the phone simply asking, “How can I help?” The beauty and kindness shines through, and I am reminded how united we are as a unique village sharing this journey together.” As one of the communities hardest hit in Hurricane Sandy, Island Park has bounced back better than ever, with new and refurbished businesses and residential properties opening on a regular basis, even adapting on-the-fly to curbside pick-up and a takeout-only model after the pandemic hit. Each Memorial Day during normal circumstances, the village is festooned with flags, thanks to local merchants, and the parade winds through the community, greeted by flag-waving children. Though things were different this year, homes and businesses were still lined with flags to show pride. The village sponsors multiple recreational programs at Masone Beach, plus concerts and movies, and its gazebo can be rented for special occasions. Masone also features grills for cooking, a spray park, a playground, rentable beach chairs, a concession and merchandise stand and much more: enough for a family to spend an entire summer Saturday or Sunday there. There has even been the occasional wedding. Over at the Town of Hempstead’s Shell Creek Park, there are tennis, baseball and additional playground facilities, rounding out the area’s recreational facility. In fall, Sacred Heart Church organizes its annual San Gennaro Festival, the status of which remains uncertain, and the Island Park Chamber of Commerce sponsors a trick-or-treat event at which little ghosts and goblins can “scare” local merchants. The chamber was particularly vital during the pandemic, supporting struggling businesses and hosting an #IPCares initiative, for which it purchased $50 gift cards from dozens of Island Park businesses and hosted a trivia contest to award them to residents. In winter, community members turn out again to light the village menorah and decorate a Christmas tree on the new Village Green at the former Village Hall site. Island Park’s Civic Association holds its annual “Love Your Troops” dance in February, and proceeds support members of the military. And In spring, the Kiwanis Club organizes its pancake breakfast. Year-round, there is a plethora of activities for people of all ages — even virtually.

ituated in the south-central portion of Nassau County, Oceanside has a plethora of visitors in normal circumstances, yet remains a tight-knit community during the dark times of a pandemic. In addition to having a rich history dating back to the earliest days of settlement on Long Island, Oceanside features a supportive business community as well as a number of civic resources for residents of all ages. Every summer, the Oceanside Kiwanis and the library present poetry and prose readings at Oceanside’s Schoolhouse Green gazebo, which have continued virtually. And fun at the Green doesn’t stop when summer ends. During the winter, it shines bright with holiday decorations replete with Christmas carolers and a menorah lighting. Oceanside schools are also a major force in the hamlet, not only responsible for preparing the next generation of Oceansiders for adulthood, but also administering the Department of Community Affairs, which holds community programs, activities for seniors and after-school programs at the district’s facilities. The schools are currently in the process of exploring options for fall instruction. The Kiwanis and Kiwanettes host holiday gatherings, pancake breakfasts and dinner dances — attended by hundreds — and the money raised is used to serve the community. Oceanside also features an active Chamber of Commerce, which welcomes new businesses with ribbon-cuttings, and honors community leaders at its annual dinner dance. It works on behalf of members to keep business in Oceanside thriving. During the pandemic, members banned together to help support local businesses, some of which closed temporarily, and others which adapted to a takeout-only model. Other civic groups include the Knights of Columbus, Ladies Auxiliary, Sons of Italy, Rotary Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. For Oceanside’s houses of worship, there are places for adherants to a wide variety of religious denominations from Oceanside and surrounding communities to feel welcome. Many recently reopened their doors after being shuttered for months amid the virus. For the younger crowd, you’ll find Boy and Girl Scouts, Little League and Girls Fastpitch. The Oceanside Fire Department and its volunteers keep residents safe during fires and were first on the scene during Hurricane Sandy, making protection from natural disasters one of the department’s top priorities. They also became even more vital during the pandemic. An Oceanside treasure is the Marine Nature Study Area, which offers year-round educational opportunities for visitors, students and adults alike, and draws nature enthusiasts from all over. The award-winning Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital hosts a wide range of informational meetings and healthrelated groups, which are open to the public. So no matter your interest, you will find Oceanside a welcoming community.

O’side schools adapt to remote learning By Briana Bonfiglio Students, faculty members and families in the Oceanside School District adapted quickly to a new normal when schools closed their doors in mid-March in response to the coronavirus. Administrators quickly rolled out an online learning plan. Teachers began establishing Google Classrooms for more regimented tasks and learning plans to adjust quickly to the new system. The school district’s “OSD Learning at Home” website added resources for online learning in all grades, as well as a “Talking to Kids About Coronavirus” section. In addition, the schools offered live, virtual online book readings for younger children and career talks with professionals for high schoolers on a daily basis. The district expanded its online offerings and remote-learning model in the months following the decision to close schools for the rest of the year, and are now strategizing how to reopen in the fall. In May, voters approved Oceanside’s $160 million budget for the 2020-21 school year. Several elementary school programs, including Project Extra, will be restructured in the 2020-21 school year because of teacher retirements and to meet state mandates for new curricula in computer science and coding. Project Extra is the district’s gifted and enrichment program for fourth through sixth grades, which traditionally saw children leave their home schools once a week to engage in activities of a specialized nature. The activities nurture children and provide them with opportunities to learn that are commensurate with their abilities, and will be depend on the status of schools opening this fall.

he chamber started out this year strong with over 140 members. Then the Covid-19 pandemic struck, forcing most of our businesses to close, putting life at a standstill. The chamber has communicated with our members via Zoom, email and Constant Contact. Since March, Ed Scharfberg the Oceanside Chamber President of Commerce has donated funds to feed the employees of Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital, assisted the Oceanside High School PTA with a graduation event, and the Oceanside Warriors who have been keeping up with the beautification of Oceanside. It’s time to get out and about
ceanside and Island Park feature a rich variety of parks and beaches for residents of all ages to enjoy from a safe social distance, and many eateries have offered outdoor dining during the pandemic. The Marine Nature Study Area is a 52-acre preserve of salt marshes, tidal creeks and uplands. The variety of plant and animal life makes it an ideal learning center for all ages. Shell Creek Park, on Vanderbilt Avenue on Barnum Island, hosts a wide range of activities and facilities for children and adults. For the athlete, a pair of basketball and paddleball courts await. Additionally there are large playing fields for general use, and the park lends out equipment such as footballs, jump ropes and knock-hockey tables. A fully equipped playground is there for children, as well as a spray pool for frolicking. There is no fee to use the park. Only proof of residency is required. Oceanside Park is a paradise for amateur athletes. Oceanside’s Little League, Sally League and the Babe Ruth League all play on the fields under normal circumstances, plus organized softball. There is also a rink for roller hockey, as well as handball, game tables, horseshoes, picnic tables, play areas, soccer and tennis. There is no fee to use the park facilities, and they are illuminated at night. The park is open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Oceanside pool features diving, wading
and swimming areas. Teams and lessons are offered as well. Pool season passes are available for individuals and families, but the cost varies according to residency, and special rates are offered to the disabled as well as solder adults. The pool, also illuminated at night, is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Oceanside Schoolhouse Green has increasingly become a vital, living center for the Oceanside community, and is the sight of a summer outdoor reading program sponsored by the Oceanside Kiwanis Club, which has continued virtually. Island Park’s Masone Beach on Waterford Road is a quiet little bay beach, perfect for those who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere. Snacks and beverages are available for the beach’s patrons, and new to Masone are the Caroline Previdi Playground and a splash park for children during the summer. Masone also hosts several summer events, the most popular of which is the Summer Concert Series, though the musical entertainment has been canceled amid the virus. Weathering an ‘unprecedented’ pandemic at MSSN By Mike Smollins

MSSN’s beautiful North Addition houses two 36bed medical surgical units, a 36-bed inpatient behavioral health unit and comprehensive maternity services center with 26 private postpartum rooms, spacious labor and delivery rooms and a neonatal intensive care unit. And that capacity will soon be expanding. MSSN is working on building a new four-story, 58,000-square-foot wing. The new wing will nearly double the size of the emergency room, add new and larger operating rooms, add more beds in the critical-care wing, and will also help prepare the hospital in case of another hurricane like Sandy or a surge in patients from a pandemic like it saw during the Covid-19 peak. MSSN is the only hospital on Nassau’s South Shore permitted to perform angioplasty in an emergency or an elective basis. When faced with an “unprecedented” situation in April as coronavirus numbers reached their peak, 383, the staff at Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital rose to the occasion and banded together to get through the difficult time. “We are stretched beyond anything we have seen in the past,” spokesman Joe Calderone said at the time. “The situation here is unprecedented.” While many lives were lost to the coronavirus, the hospital celebrated the release of hundreds of Covid-19 positive patients who were released with a clean bill of health. At a time when front-line workers were stretched thin, the Oceanside community and many others came together to show their support, donating food to the hospital’s staff daily throughout the pandemic. In May, when cases began plummeting, the hospital returned to offering elective surgeries as the hospital began a “Don’t Put Your Health on Hold” initiative, urging the community not to risk safety out of fear of coming to a hospital. “If you’re out there and you have a procedure that you’ve been putting off, or if you have any kind of medical issue, you should call immediately,” Calderone said. “Don’t wait.” In June, most units of the hospital returned to welcoming visitors under strict guidelines, including one visitor per day per patient, and a shift from a 24 hours per day visitor policy to a four-hour window. Additionally, all visitors must undergo a Covid-19 test no more than two days before visiting. Before, during and after the surge of the pandemic, MSSN was committed to delivering standardsetting, patient-centered health care. It is one of the region’s largest hospitals, with 455 beds, more than 900 physicians and 3,000 employees. The hospital is an acute-care, not-for-profit teaching hospital that provides state-of-the-art care in cardiac, cancer, orthopedic, bariatric, pain management, mental health and emergency services. he Island Park Fire Department has served the community since 1924. At the time, many homes were wood-fram bungalows, which posed serious fire risks. So, with its first $800, the company purchased a two- wheeled, 40-gallon chemical tank, one dozen hand chemical extinguishers, three hand sirens and badges. There was one fire hydrant, at Long Beach Road and Warwick Road, but it had low water pressure. Because the community
felt the need for better fire company equipment, residents donated land and supplies. The current firehouse was built in 1951. In recent years, the Island Park Fire Department has welcomed a second new truck to replace one lost in Hurricane Sandy. Town & County Nassau County Nassau County is governed by an elected Legislature, which is comprised of members from 19 districts. It includes an independent budget director who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters. Residents may submit petitions for proposed laws that legislators must consider. Legislators serve two-year terms. The county executive — currently Democrat Laura Curran — serves a four-year term and is the chief administrator. Town of Hempstead
The Town of Hemp-
stead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles, with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Democrat Laura Gillen — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
