Oceanside High School inducted nine new members into its Circle of Pride in a ceremony at the school on Nov. 8.

It was the ninth ceremony since 2003 to highlight members of the school’s athletic teams for their contributions to their sport beyond their high school years.

This year’s inductees were Samantha Cesario Kramer, Eddie Curry, the DiDominica family, Bobby Farb, Kelly Farrell, Brian Hennessy, Andy

Morris, Richie Woods and the gymnastics teams that captured six consecutive county championships.

Samantha Cesario Kramer skated for the first time at a friend’s birthday party when she was 6. During her time at OHS, she competed in international figure skating events, and won the 2010 Gardena Spring Trophy in Italy. She competed in several other inter national tour naments before retiring in 2015.

Oceanside Scholarship Fund helps graduating seniors

The Oceanside Scholarship Fund recently held its Kids Helping Kids annual fundraiser to aid the community’s graduating seniors in financial need. The fund has been helping seniors in the Oceanside School District for more than 70 years.

This year, Scholarship Fund volunteers sent out fliers throughout the community to gather donations for seniors in need. Oceanside High School seniors volunteered to help the fund distribute them.

More than 20 Oceanside High students prepared the fliers on Oct. 18 and 19 to be mailed throughout the community, and

Many Scholarship Fund members have been a part of the

committee for over five years, and some for over 10 years. The members include Eric Abbey, Joan Calabro, Kevin Carbonetti, Robin Esposito, Fran Gallin, Joan Hiland, Sarah Mazeika, Cookie Paczkowski, Michele Pitowsky, Pat Roth and Sandie Schoell. Paczkowski, the fund president, discussed past fundraisers the scholarship fund has

held.

“We’ve been doing this for a long time,” Paczkowski said.

“When the seniors graduate, anyone who’s in financial need can apply through our organization, and at the end of the year, we give out the awards.”

O’side athletes give back beyond high school class. The accomplished soccer player, who won the team MVP in 1990, was killed in a traffic accident in 1997. Curry was inducted into the SUNY Geneseo Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019 for his record goals and assists.

Thomas DiDominica immigrated to the U.S. from Italy in the mid-1940s and served as the treasurer of the school board, a member of the Kiwanis Club and the grand knight of the Knights of Columbus. He and his son Thomas Jr., who played on the OHS baseball team, started Dees’ Nursery in 1955. “The DiDominicas are Oceanside’s family,” the dinner program read.

Thomas III currently owns the communitybeloved nursery.

When he set the record for chin-ups at Futon Avenue School riChie Woods No. 8, it was clear Bobby Farb was physically gifted. He trained with the high school gymnastics team in sixth grade and became the team’s mascot during the season. When he was eligible to compete at the high school, Farb amazed by winning the Long Island and state championships and became the only OHS athlete to win the MVP in gymnastics or any sport for four straight years.

Kelly Farrell was a three-sport athlete at OHS, earning 11 varsity letters across soccer, lacrosse, and track and field. She also won the Ruth Lewis Award for the most outstanding female athlete at OHS. She went on to play for a Division I program at Loyola University Maryland, leading the Greyhounds to two NCAA tournament appearances. Farrell has coached at the Division I level since 2011.

A three-year varsity basketball player who reached two county finals, Brian Hennessy was also voted All-League, AllCounty, All-Long Island and Co-MVP of Conference 1. Hennessy went on to break the Stony Brook University record for three pointers in a game, 8, and in a season.

In 1982, Andy Morris was hired as OHS’s director of student activities. He helped to form the original Section 308 as “The Water Buffaloes,” to attend every function that the school offered. With no background in coaching girls’ gymnastics, Morris helmed the team as it won eight county championships through the 1990s and 2000s. As the baseball coach, he achieved 256 wins.

Richie Woods, a 1976 OHS graduate, worked in the district for 35 years, coaching over 1,000 games across basketball, baseball, and soccer at the high school and middle school. As a student-athlete, Woods played under three Circle of Pride coaches and was awarded the OHS Rocky Marciano Award for his captaining of the baseball and basketball teams, while also playing as a starting defender on the soc-

cer team. He also threw the school’s only no-hitter in the 1976 playoffs.

Finally, the 1981 to 1987 gymnastics teams were inducted for their six-year dynasty. They held a record of 48-4-1 in that time, going undefeated in the 81-82, 82-83, and 83-84 seasons with 29 consecutive meet wins.

The OHS Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1960 by basketball coach Frank Januszewski. In 2001, P.E. coach and teacher Sean Keenan became the newest curator of the hall and worked with Athletic Pride Club co-adviser Tony Caiazza to create the Circle of Pride Dinner. Ken Dwyer now oversees the hall along with co-adviser to the Circle of Pride, Jason Manning.

O’side students win Bay Park naming contest

Oceanside School students from School No.. 8 and School No. 5 won the Bay Park Conveyance Naming Contest. The project will reduce nitrogen pollution in the Western Bays by redirecting treated water from the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility to the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant.

The naming contest allowed students to assign a name to the micro-tunnel boring machine that will be used to perform the project. The naming contest was open to students in grades six to eight across the Bay Park Conveyance Project Corridor, which includes Baldwin, Bellmore, East Rockaway, Freeport, Hewlett, Island Park, North Merrick, Long Beach, Lynbrook, Oceanside, Rockville Centre, Seaford, Wantagh and Woodmere.

Sixth-graders from Oceanside School District’s gifted and enrichment program won the competition. The School No. 5 students who won the contest were Matt Vlahakis, Sophia Kenn, Rocco Fontanelli and Amelia Valentino.

Their teacher is Kristin Stea, and she has taught in Oceanside for 23 years. Stea discussed how the students got their idea for the

winning name.

“They were learning about Greek mythology and were reading ‘Percy Jackson, and they wanted to tie it into the project, and so they came up with the name P.O.S.E.I.D.O.N.” Stea said. Stea went on to discuss the students’ initial reaction to the project and the enthusiasm that they felt in taking part in the contest. “I asked them what is a micro-tunnel boring machine, and they had no idea,” Stea said. “I said to them they are going to be doing this from Bay Park all the way to Cedar Creek, and they need to find a name for the machine because it’s going to help our waterways. There were a lot of questions, but once they heard about the project in Bay Park and were presented with the information, they were really excited, mainly because there’s a lot of relevance to it.

Many of them grew up going to Bay Park in East Rockaway or played sports there.”

“They came up with MARSH-MELLOW,” said Gunther. “This pipeline is going to cause some ecological revival once it is rerouted into the Atlantic Ocean, so they really wanted to emphasize marsh, and a student searched up the definition of mellow — to free from harshness — and it was the perfect meaning for what we needed for a name that really represents this machine and what it’s going to do for this community. I think it has a very beautiful meaning.”

Gunther also gave her thoughts on the impact the project will have on the community and what it means for the students to be a part

of the contest. “Teaching in Oceanside and going to the South Shore beaches growing up, I think it’s amazing for the community,” Gunther said. “It’s not only going to revive all the habitats of wildlife that are in the marshlands, but it’s also going to revitalize the community.

A lot more outdoor activities can take place in those areas that wouldn’t normally happen, and it gives a sense of pride for a community like Oceanside and East Rockaway and all the South Shore. What they’re doing with this project will only keep this community safer and healthier. It’s exciting for the students to feel they have a piece of it.”

Islanders pay homage to veterans with Chair of Honor

The much-anticipated opening of UBS Arena will take place this Saturday night when the New York Islanders host the Calgary Flames.

On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, Islanders coowner Jon Ledecky hosted a dozen United States veterans for a tour of the team’s new home and also unveiled a “Chair of Honor” on the main concourse. It will remain empty to honor those that are Prisoners of War or Missing in Action and symbolizes there will always be a place for them at UBS Arena awaiting their safe return. The Chair of Honor will

also serve as a remembrance of those who have fallen in service of our country.

“We want to make sure at UBS Arena that we are always remembering veterans as well as current servicemembers who serve our country with such valor, determination and patriotism,” Ledecky said.

Another guest of Ledecky’s on Veterans Day was NBA Legend Shaquille O’Neal, who formally announced his Big Chicken brand will make its New Yorkarea debut at the arena. O’Neal was joined

by Donald Rosner, owner of Huntingtonbased Blue Line Deli & Bagels, which collaborated with Big Chicken on a specialty sandwich for the arena.

Herald sports Stage set for Oceanside-‘Pequa rematch

Oceanside won its Nassau Conference I football semifinal playoff against Syosset in convincing fashion last Friday, as the Sailors steamrolled the Braves 61-33 at Hofstra.

With the win, the Sailors solidified a spot in the county championship game Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Massapequa, in a rematch of last spring’s final won by the Chiefs.

Oceanside head coach Rob Blount was impressed with how well his offense was able to perform against Syosset. “I thought that the offense did really well,” Blount said. “We got stopped the first series, and from there we got everyone going. It was nice to see.”

After their first drive in which the offense went three and out, the Sailors were essentially flawless on the offensive side of the ball, as they found their rhythm and registered touchdowns on each of their next 9 drives. The team did a fantastic job of diversifying its play calls, as the rushing and passing attacks were equally potent. The Sailors finished the game with 564 yards of total offense, with 214 yards coming from passing and 350 yards coming from rushing.

Senior quarterback Charlie McKee was the central catalyst for this dominant performance, as he succeeded both rushing and passing. He finished with 182 passing yards and a touchdown, and also had a staggering 193 rushing and 5 rushing touchdowns. He also converted a fourth down on a designed fake punt, as he lined up at punter and took the direct snap and ran for 21 yards and an easy first down. Blount was elated with how the Stony Brook commit delivered in this elimination game.

“Charlie is just that guy,” Blount said. “He’s essentially a running back that throws very well. We have to get the ball in his hands as much as we can, and he did a great job.

Running back Cole Parker was the perfect complement in the ground game, as he finished with 145 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on only 8 carries.

Oceanside’s receivers stepped up to the stage admirably as well, as 6 different Sailors had receptions.

Ronnie Kraemer had 62 yards on 4 receptions and a receiving touchdown, and also had a passing touchdown, as he took an end-around rush on a designed trick play and threw a roaming 32-yard dart to Logan Lyson in the back of the end zone. Lyson fished with 73 receiving yards, which was the most on the team.

Michael Mecca, Nick Ebel, Xavier Miller and Jake Perinchief all played their parts well, as they combined for another 79 receiving yards.

Students paid tribute to Oceanside veterans at Oceanside High School with a flag ceremony held on Schoolhouse Green last week.

The honoree was Emil Kesselman, naval veteran of both World War II and the Korean War and a member of Jewish War Veterans Post 717. Kesselman shared his personal experience from August 1945, when he was privileged to take dictation over the radio from President Truman as he gave his speech

announcing the end of the war with Japan.

He then read the president’s speech over the loudspeaker. Kesselman later served in the Korean War and was assigned as a secretary stenographer to Truman. After his service, he studied to earn a business degree from Baruch College. He worked until he was 90 years old.

Students gave speeches about Kesselman’s service while raising and lowering the flag.

Two kindergarten students from School No. 6 presented Kesselman with cards and artwork to thank him for his service.

An astronomy presentation will take place at the Island Park Library on Nov.18. A telescope and binocular observation will be hosted by Long Beach astronomy teacher Larry Gerstman. Gerstman, 74, has taught in the Long Beach School District since 1976 and has held several ibrary talks across Long Island.

Attendees will be able to observe the planets in the night sky, such as Jupiter and Saturn. Later in the night, a partial lunar eclipse at 2 a.m. will give observers a view of a subtly changing moon, and it will be the last lunar eclipse of the year.

“We’re having an unusual lunar eclipse for this area,” Gerstman said. “We haven’t had a partial lunar eclipse since March 23 into March 24,1997. That was a 92 percent eclipse, and this one coming up will be a 97 and a half percent eclipse.” At maximum eclipse, the moon’s face will be nearly fully covered by the deepest part of the Earth’s shadow and will have a deep red appearance.

“We have a committee that sits down and reviews everything, and when they confirm those who applied fit the requirements, that’s when they get a reward,” Paczkowski said.

In the past, the scholarship fund and volunteering seniors hosted a phone-athon at which they would call community members asking for donations. Paczkowski also discussed going away from the phone-a-thon to gather donations.

“Originally when we ran the phone-atho, we had the students make phone calls and asked the people if they could help us donate,” said Paczkowski. “The school provides a list of people in the district to make calls and throughout the year we get the donations, but times have changed and no one answers the phones.”

Many alumni thank the fund volunteers for their service. “I got a call from an older man telling me that he had a donation for us,” Paczkowski said. “He graduated in 1982, and the committee had given him a $750 award. He came back and sent us a check for $750. He said that because of us, he was able to go to Nassau Community College.”

Last year the Scholarship Fund made cards to receive donations from those in the community. Fran Gallin is a member

A. This problem gets me steamed. Among the types of heating you can use in your home, steam is the most efficient.

Thirty-seven percent of all fossil fuels burned in the U.S., just for commercial purposes, are burned to create steam. Huge steam plants are hiding among other large buildings in every major city in this country, and yet, little onte eeper by little, the interest in passing steam knowledge to the next generation is dwindling, enough so that many plumbers say they don’t touch steam systems.

What steams me more is that the evolving technology makes it so environmentally friendly, through the implementation of zero-emission, closed-loop boilers using only hydrogen and oxygen as the fuel source, but training to get this technology up and running is nearly nonexistent. Our education system is geared toward inflated college tuition for white-collar positions that foster the need for more foreign laborers to do manual work, and more people unable to land a job for the oversaturated white-collar job market. Industrial-arts classes have been eliminated, and even though not everybody is college-bound, the education of people to fix our cars, run our factories and install steam boilers is lacking. Most manual jobs have evolved to computerization with more sophisticated technology, yet we are not preparing people to address these professions.

Steam accounts for such a high amount of our economy, from food processing to pulp and paper, chemical production, petroleum refining and energy production, that I have to wonder why we can’t do better. I had a steam system in my home and was persuaded to convert to a water system. That system has never been as efficient, as energy-saving or as uniform as the steam system was. I changed systems because the entire home was renovated — otherwise, in hindsight, steam was still the better choice.

Wall-hung boilers are “tank-less,” meaning that they have a small cauldron in them that you can hold in your hand, and when a faucet is turned on, for example, the water begins to flow toward the faucet, through the tiny cauldron (much smaller than the ancient boiler’s cauldron), and instantly heats. Since the water heats in an instant, these boilers don’t require a wasteful hot-water holding tank that heats up every time the thermostat says it’s cooling, even while you’re away from the house.

There are plumbers who still do steam systems, and it’s worth it for you to call them. Good luck!

He suggested a new wall-hung boiler that he says is very efficient, but even though the boiler part is less money, the radiators will all have to come out and new piping will have to be put in, at a very high cost. What would you suggest, and why can’t we just change the boiler?

o the relief of many in the political world, the 2021 elections are behind us. Whether your candidate won or lost, our mailboxes will no longer be stuffed with attack brochures, and we can be happy that the robo calls have ended. But if you think the strategizing and mischief is over, you are mistaken.

During the coming months and most of 2022, legislative bodies all over America will be participating in a process called redistricting.

Every 10 years, upon the completion of the federal JERRY census, legislatures at every level KREMER begin drawing the maps that will decide who will represent you in Congress and at the state and local level for the next 10 years. The redrawing of local maps is generally ignored by the public, and the only way you find out about it is when you enter the voting booth and find that your favorite elected official no longer represents you.

Is the redistricting a fair process? Generally not. In some states, the maps are drawn under the supervision of an independent commission, and every effort is made to see that districts are balanced and no incumbent is given an unfair advantage. But, generally, partisans whose goal is to hold on to power or increase it draw the maps. That practice is known as gerrymandering, and it is intended to give one party an unfair advantage.

Gerrymandering will play a major role in deciding who will control the next Congress, and possibly many future Congresses until 2030. Some states have already finished drawing their maps, and are in court defending their machinations. Others, including New York, are in the midst of the map-making process. Because the current census left our state short of the required number of voters per district, New York will lose one member of the House of Representatives in the 2023 Congress.

like, it’s a sure bet that our state will play a pivotal role in determining whether the Democrats maintain control of Congress — while, at the same time, a number of Republican incumbents will likely face the possibility of primary contests, and potential extinction.

I don’t claim to be an expert, but I know from personal experience what redistricting can do to your political career. Back in the 1970s, the State Legislature was controlled by the Republicans. As a Democrat, I expected the worst, and those fears came true. My district, most of which was in the middle of Nassau County, running from Long Beach to East Rockaway, was combined with the Five Towns, which was represented by the late Eli Wager, a fellow Democrat.

That deliberate drawing of the lines led to a bitter primary battle with a colleague and friend. Only one of us could survive a primary, and I was fortunate to win that battle, and went on to become a member of the Albany power structure as chairman of the Assembly’s Ways and Means

Committee. Happily, Wager went on to enjoy a successful career as a Nassau County Supreme Court justice — but we learned how nasty redistricting can be.

No community is exempt from the district map-makers. Following the 2010 census, the County Legislature redrew its maps and cut the Five Towns in half. One portion of the community is now attached to the Elmont area, and the balance remains with the Long Beach area.

Because map-making is kept under wraps, there isn’t much the average citizen can do about this legislative sleight of hand. There are usually public hearings before a final map is unveiled but they aren’t well publicized, and the party in power isn’t going to broadcast the new lines. Redistricting has been a dirty word for as long as I’ve been on this planet, and nothing in the years to come will make it any easier to accept.

Sticks and stones — words can never harm me

ou cannot burn a book in 2021.

You can burn the paper and the ink and the cardboard, but in our world of e-books, you cannot ever kill the words and ideas that an author created. That makes the news of last week’s book burning threat in Virginia both an empty gesture and a symbolic but devastating embrace of censorship.

It says, we are the thought police.

We will decide what your children can read. We are here to destroy the ideas we do not want them to see RANDI and hear.

KREISS We have always struggled with censorship and book banning in this country, but this next step, to set fire to books we don’t approve of, is an homage to the Nazis and every authoritarian regime that tries to suppress freedom.

Last week, the Spotsylvania County school board in Virginia advocated for burning certain books. According to the Free Lance-Star newspaper, in a unanimous vote, the school staff would decide which books were “objectionable.” Rabih Abuismail and Kirk Twigg, two board members, suggested burning the books

that have been removed. “I think we should throw those books in a fire,” Abuismail reportedly said.

Two years ago in this space, I wrote, “We can almost hear the crisp curling of burning pages in the dangerous rhetoric coming from President Donald Trump. His people aren’t burning books yet, but it could happen. When authoritarian leaders consolidate power, they always kill ideas first.”

Book burning is a cliché of dictatorial control. It didn’t begin with the Nazis, although they did it better than most, with the burning of tens of thousands of books under the leadership of the German Student Union in the 1930s. The burned books were deemed dangerous because of antiNazi ideas.

Authoritarian censorship starts by discrediting legitimate news sources and reliable reporting. From ancient Alexandria to the decade-long Chinese Cultural Revolution, throughout all modern wars, to the bonfires of rare manuscripts by Isis in Mosul in 2015, ashes are all that remain of millions of irreplaceable works.

Book burnings are fueled by ignorance, and fear is the accelerant. Historically, book bans foreshadow other fires to come; therefore, it is more important than

ever to stand up for intellectual freedom.

Trump loyalists, proliferating in our communities, call out opposing ideologies as unpatriotic or treasonous, just as their leader targeted the press as “enemies” of America. Trump’s rants and actions triggered a fire alarm, and now the flames are rising from places like Virginia. In Texas, the governor has ordered school officials to review schoolbooks for “pornography and other obscene content.” He did not define pornography or obscenity.

In my own life, books have been the oxygen, the food and light that helped me grow as a human being.

When I was an eighth-grade English teacher in Hewlett in 1970, a parent on Open School Night stood up and publicly protested my teaching of “The Diary of Anne Frank” because it mentions menstruation. We discussed his concerns privately, and he eventually saw the merits of the book. That process, of goodwill and a respectful exchange of opposing ideas, seems to have given way to rancor and vitriol.

We talk about them. My grandson is reading “The Things They Carried,” by Tim O’Brien, in sophomore English. It is brutal, violent, deeply disturbing and abso-

lutely essential for an understanding of war and the legacy of trauma.

Great books disturb the field. When school boards and parents and teachers disagree, I say put down the matches and begin a conversation. The more distressing question is, how do we move forward as an intellectually free democracy when a school board and the parents and the community agree to ban or burn books they deem inappropriate?

That would be a dark place indeed.

Over the years, many books have been banned in the U.S., for reasons ranging from sexually explicit material to homosexual material to challenging religious ideas to depictions of racism, nudity, Marxism, drugs and alcohol and Satanism. Don’t read me wrong: Not every book is appropriate for every reader, especially children; however, no book should be banned. Burning? I don’t think so.

The book the Virginia school board wants to burn is “Beloved,” by Toni Morrison, perhaps the most profound and moving novel about slavery in America.

How do we push back at the knownothing, anti-intellectual yahoos lighting the pyres? We read. And we talk. And we comfort ourselves with the knowledge that in our e-book world, paper books may go up in smoke, but the ideas will float in the digital clouds forever.

Covid is still raging — get your shot ASAP

et’s stop equating the coronavirus with the flu, please. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the flu kills, on average, 36,000 people a year.

Right now, not yet two years after Covid19 swept across the planet, it is still killing more than a thousand people a day in the U.S. From Nov. 7 to 13, an average of 1,128 people died in America per day. If the death toll were to continue at that rate, one year from now, another 412,000 people would have succumbed to this disease.

The virus has already killed 762,000 Americans.

We mustn’t forget these horrible and horrifying statistics. It seems of late that we have, however. We’re so eager to

carry on with our normal lives that we forget this disease is still raging across this country, and around the world.

We’re now seeing Covid-19 cases rapidly tick up across Western Europe. A rising rate on the other side of the Atlantic has thus far been a precursor of things to come here in the U.S. This past week, we saw the infection rate rise across Long Island and New York state.

As of press time, it stood at nearly 3 percent statewide. That’s lower than it was earlier in the fall, but still significantly higher than it was in June, when we saw a lull in new cases and the rate dropped to less than 1 percent.

No one can force anyone to take a vaccine, but understand this: We will only overcome this pandemic through their widespread use. The stubborn reluc-

tance to be vaccinated on the part of many holdouts is jeopardizing public health. It’s as simple as that.

So, we urge the unvaccinated to get a vaccine — and a flu shot — as soon as possible. And if you’re already vaccinated and coming up for your booster, get it.

We understand the reluctance on the part of some parents to vaccinate their children. It’s one thing to take the shot — and accept the minimal risks — yourself. It’s another to impose those possible risks on your kids. The thing is, the risk of falling ill with the coronavirus — and potentially spreading it to vulnerable populations, including immuno-compromised children — outweighs any risks from the vaccines themselves.

The bottom line: Get vaccinated, now, not later.

L.I.’s future solar users are getting a raw deal

N

ew York is headed in the wrong direction on solar power.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, which is charge of the state’s solar programs, is offering special funding to help homeowners offset the cost of a new fee on rooftop solar installations charged by local power companies — but it’s for upstate solar users, not Long Islanders.

Isn’t the state supposed to be encouraging solar, according to the ambitious plans laid out by Andrew Cuomo, when he was governor, to drastically reduce the state’s carbon footprint? What gives?

NYSERDA officials say the agency has no jurisdiction over the Long Island Power Authority’s solar power plan, and thus cannot offer a financial offset here, according to Newsday. The “transition” fee, as it’s being called, is expected to amount to $5 to $10 a month, starting in January, on solar systems installed after Jan. 1.

In 2019, Cuomo signed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. The state now aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 85 percent by 2050, with 100 percent zero-emission electricity production by 2040. Rooftop solar figures centrally into the state’s plans.

So, why are local power companies like LIPA charging a fee on new solar installations? It’s not entirely clear.

World leaders convened in recent weeks in Glasgow, Scotland, to hash out a new climate agreement that, among

other measures, seeks to reduce the release of methane gas from any number of sources and the use of coal as a major fuel source to produce electricity.

The world, as the summit made clear, is racing toward potential climate disaster, and swift action is required.

The clearly unfair treatment of Long Island’s future solar users stands to

potentially slow the spread of a technology that would only help New York meet its climate goals and obligations. LIPA shouldn’t impose any fee on new solar users.

At the same time, it seems, NYSERDA is abandoning its obligation to Long Island electric customers. It really should step in and step up here.

recently joined five Long Island high school students for a visit to the Joseph Lloyd Manor in Lloyd Harbor, the 18th-century site where many enslaved people of African descent lived. The visit yielded a fascinating discussion with significant implications for education on Long Island.

The five diverse students are part of ERASE Racism’s Student Task Force, a student-led initiative that advances racial and socioeconomic equity on issues that impact their ELAinE everyday lives.

The students GRoss came from four school districts in Nassau and Suffolk counties. The visit was part of a series of similar events happening across the country called Teach the Truth Day of Action.

What was initially so striking to me was that none of the students knew that slavery had existed on Long Island. They were surprised that they had not learned such a notable historical fact in school.

The extent to which the history of actions detrimental to people of color

has been left out of history books was underscored by this year’s 100th anniversary of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, which destroyed 35 blocks of a renowned Black community and killed as many as 300 Black people. As the History Channel stated, “The riot reflected terribly on the city and subsequently wasn’t included in history books or newspapers for decades.” A survey conducted by The Oklahoman this year found that the vast majority of Oklahomans learned about the massacre outside of school.

There is a growing national debate about the extent to which school curricula should address the less-than-noble aspects of American history, especially as they relate to the experiences of people of color. On one side of the debate is New York state, whose Education Department has taken substantial steps to recognize diversity, equity and inclusion in curricula. In 2018, the state published a framework for culturally responsive curricula, on which I had been asked to comment while it was in draft form. The framework supports local districts in creating curricula that elevate historically marginalized voices, affirm diverse identities, perspectives and cultures, assure

rigor and foster independent learning.

This past April, the State Education Department issued a second document, “The NYS Board of Regents Framework on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in New York’s Schools: A Call to Action.” In May, it approved a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Framework and Policy Statement, which requires all school districts to develop and implement diversity, equity and inclusion policies.

On the other side of the issue, eight states have passed legislation — and another 20 are considering it — that directs educators to avoid teaching about the role of racism and oppression in American history. Much of the passed and proposed legislation contains vague language that allows for a student — or a parent — to state that he or she experienced “discomfort” with the discussion of race and for a teacher to be deemed guilty without much recourse.

How, after all, could the teacher prove that the student did not feel discomfort?

New Hampshire’s House Bill 2 explicitly forbids a teacher to state that an individual might be “inherently racist, sexist, or oppressive, whether consciously or unconsciously.” This stands in opposi-

These legislative efforts are focused on protecting students from the reality of American history, as if they could not handle the truth. But in my experience working with hundreds of Long Island high school students, they relish the opportunity to explore race and its implications for America’s past, present and future.

As a white student who was with me at Joseph Lloyd Manor wrote, “Our past consists of more than just heroes . . . Not allowing us to discuss and explore ‘sensitive topics’ avoids essential conversations. Developing a safe learning environment is impossible if accurate information is restricted.”

As this national debate unfolds, it is vital to hear from America’s students.

Those whom I talk to aren’t looking to be protected from the truth, but rather are eager to explore it. They know that they will inherit a world in which race remains an inescapable reality. They are not looking for comfort. They are eager for a thorough understanding of diverse perspectives that will be essential to their success in the workplace. Why should education deprive them of that?
