School district opens new outdoor research center By KEPHERD DANIEL kdaniel@liherald.com

The Oceanside School District cut the ribbon on its brand new Outdoor Research Center, called “ORCA,” in the arboretum on Oct. 6. Since October 2020, students from Oceanside High School Castleton, the district’s alternative high school, have worked with their

teachers to create a unique outdoor learning center that sits adjacent to the district office parking lot. There’s no place like Oceanside and Island Park — but you don’t need us to tell you that. Whether you hail from Oceanside or Island Park, both communities are places worth being immensely proud of. Both are communities with much to offer, including outstanding recreation. Tee off at the Middle Bay Golf Course or go for a walk on Masone Beach. In Oceanside and Island Park, there’s something for everyone. Residents of the neighboring towns come together in times of need, because they want the best for not only themselves and their families, but also for the people around them — their neighbors, their children and their friends. The Oceanside/ Island Park Herald is your community newspaper. There is no other publication or news outlet that knows these neighborhoods, the people and the things they care about, better than we do. We are there for you in the best of times and the worst of times — no matter what. This week’s Herald is being mailed to every home in both communities, and includes a copy of our popular annual magazine, Living In Oceanside and Island Park. It’s filled with great information you can use throughout the year, and it features the many acts of kindness that make Oceanside and Island

Park such great places in which to live. If you’re not a Herald subscriber, we hope a look at this week’s paper will persuade you that you should be. Each week in these pages — and on our website — we cover the big issues, and you’ll find the local news that you can’t find anywhere else. If you’re not currently receiving the Herald by mail each week, please help keep quality local journalism alive in your community by signing up for a free subscription. See our subscription offer inside on Page 9, or find us online at LIHerald. com/free. You can also call (516) 5694000, ext. 7. If you’re already a subscriber, thank you for your support. We hope you are pleased with our coverage. If you’re new to the Oceanside/Island Park Herald, then you must know that our mission is to cover all the news of your neighborhood — from the schools to local sports, from houses of worship to philanthropic organizations. If you have suggestions for stories you’d like to see, we’d like to hear from you. Give me a call (516) 569-4000, ext. 283, and share your ideas. Enjoy the paper, and thanks for reading!
