Former fire chief honored as Safety Educator of the Year By tom CArrozzA tcarroza@liherald.com

Former Oceanside Fire Chief Edward Scharfberg was honored with the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York Fire Safety Educator of the Year Award at Oceanside Fire Department headquarters July 19. Scharfberg has instructed community organizations such as the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, Boy and Girl Scouts and local senior

citizen groups for more than 40 years. Under his leadership, the department’s education efforts reach an average of 2,500 people each year. “Chief Scharfberg has always preached fire prevention, and fire safety and the results speak for themselves,” Oceanside Fire Department Capt. Mark Sparberg said. “The Oceanside Fire Department’s fire loss is now at historic lows thanks to his passion and tenacity for this important subject.”

The former chief began teaching fire safety in 1981, focusing on elementary school students. In 1985, he wrote fire safety and prevention articles for local newspapers. Scharfberg spent the 1990s working with the Oceanside School District developing a fire prevention and safety program that became a permanent course for the district’s schools and summer school programs.
