The Say Their Names Association ended its first year June 26 by awarding scholarships to eight Black seniors from local high schools, including Oceanside High, who demonstrated a commitment to helping their communities and starting conversations about race. Founded after the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, the Say Their Names Association offers Black high school seniors scholarships to support their higher education. Say Their Names held its inaugural
awards ceremony for the United for Change Memorial Scholarship June 26 at the Schoolhouse Green in Oceanside. Students from Oceanside, Baldwin, Lawrence, Lynbrook, Malverne and Hempstead were represented at the event. Tom Capone, who retired as the principal of School 2 in Oceanside in 2018, was moved to organize the association when he saw a memorial service for George Floyd on television. ANItA NAmDAr, CENtEr, has joined the Oceanside Library Board of Trustees, with Dan Faust, Board President, left, and Library Director, Christina Marra.
The Oceanside Library has had a change in its board of trustees, adding Anita Namdar to finish out the term of Thomas Beirne, who stepped aside recently to focus on family and business commitments. Library trustees thanked Beir ne for his devotion, in particular to the library’s Vision 2020 project, which will
overhaul the library and renovate newly purchased nearby locations at 21 Fairview and 26 Davison avenues. Namdar, a longtime Oceanside resident, has served on the Friends of the Oceanside Library board for five years. She graduated from Wheaton College, where she majored in psychology, and has worked for
an independent-living residential housing agency, including as a program manager, residence supervisor and property manager, working with landlords and community members. Anita and her husband, David, have two children who attend Oceanside schools.
