DEC seeks remedy for former Gulf Oil site in Oceanside Public comments are being considered By MIkE SMollINS msmollins@liherald.com

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is seeking to address contamination at the site of the former Gulf Oil terminal at Industrial Place in Oceanside. The site, in the southwest corner of Oceanside, off Lawson Boulevard, behind the Oceanside Shopping Center on

Long Beach Road, is included in the state’s Superfund Program, and the DEC invited public comment on it last month to see what community members wanted there. “We will keep the public informed throughout the investigation and the cleanup of the site,” the DEC’s website said. The seven-acre site is surrounded by tidal waters to the west, south and east. It is now used mainly for paved parking

for a neighboring warehouse facility. Soil and groundwater tests in previous years have indicated that the soil in the western and southern portions of the site contains volatile organic compounds at concentrations above allowable levels. Groundwater contamination has been found predominantly in the northeastern, central and southern areas of the site. Continued on page 16
