Coronavirus puts North Shore Little Leagues on hold for now By MIke CoNN mconn@liherald.com

Although there are several Little League organizations on the North Shore, their administrators have all expressed the same sentiments about the potential of a lost season: Spring won’t be the same without youth baseball. Little Leagues across the state have shut down for now amid the coronavirus pandemic, leaving thousands of young players without the national pastime. Darren Gerbosi, president of the

Oyster Bay Baseball & Softball Little League, said he and others involved in the league were disappointed to miss their opening day, which was scheduled for March 28. He added that the league could begin an abbreviated season on June 1. Although a normal season ends in late June, because many children go to summer camp, Gerbosi said that a season starting on June 1 might have to extend into July. That might not be too big a problem given the circumstances, however, he said, because some parents may be

reluctant to send children to camp this summer. But Gerbosi emphasized that the health and safety of those involved in the league is most important. “It’s unfortunate they’re not playing baseball,” he said, “but in the big the picture, it’s really minute.
