Recognizing Holocaust survivors on Sukkot hgaldamez@liherald.com

“Time is running short and every time they’re here, it is a gift that they’re able to attend,” said Cathy Byrne, associate executive director for Older Adults and Special Needs at the Marion & Aaron Gural JCC regarding living Holocaust survivors.

The Five Towns Premier Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Woodmere hosted the fifth annual Sukkot celebration luncheon for survivors that call the Five Towns home. The Gural JCC organized the event.

The Jewish holiday lasts eight days and commemorates the end of the yearly harvest and the exodus of the ancient Hebrews from Egypt.

More than 40 Holocaust survivors attended, split between Gural JCC member and those from the Woodmere rehab center.

According to the Holocaust Survivors’ Right Authority, there are roughly 147,000 Holocaust survivors living in Israel. In New York City, there are roughly 350,000 survivors.

Traditional Jewish music was played with a Sukkot theme that welcomed each attendee. Rehab center administrator Joe Benden and Rabbi Yechezkel Freundlich of Congregation Beth Sholom in Lawrence offered greetings.

“Your strength and your resilience is

truly an inspiration,” Benden said during his welcoming speech, with one survivor shouting out “thank you.” “Despite the brutal history, you have persevered, and you remind us that we can overcome tremendous adversity. We must stand together and never be silent in the face of hatred and discrimination.”

A musical performance by Dovid Edell, Eli Dachs and Yitzi Devor of Mesivta Ateres Shmuel of Waterbury in Connecticut entertained the guests.

Dachs, who said he had never met a survivor until that sunny afternoon, introduced himself to every one of the survivors after his musical performance.

‘To be here, to sing to survivors is an honor,” he said.

On the menu was chicken vegetable soup as the appetizer and for lunch, brisket with mashed potatoes and string beans.

Holocaust survivor Lowren Braum left Germany when she was in the seventh grade. At her age, it was difficult to pick up her things and leave at that age, she said.

“I lived through it,” she said. “To be here still and to be honored, is an honor.”

Lawrence native Thea Katz came from Germany and found her way in Sunnyside Queens in 1939, after Kristallnacht, in the first grade.

She was not afraid, she said, because she had her parents.

Sosana Friedman said the luncheon made her feel a sense of importance for her and other survivors.

The Gural JCC caters to roughly 300 survivors in their Chaverim Program for Holocaust Survivors, meeting every Thursday at the Cedarhurst location, allowing them the opportunity to socialize with other survivors while participat-

ing in recreational and educational activities. Therapeutic services such as health monitoring, short-term counseling and crisis intervention are offered too.

Byrne said there is one survivor who can’t hear or see that is a regular at the program. Despite his unfortunate way of living, he can feel the love in the room when he comes on Thursdays.

“We have such a dynamic team,” she said. “Our program breeds life and love into each survivor.”

Chabad of Hewlett members support Israel Community advocates for the Jewish state and denounces Hamas attack

Within hours after Israel was attacked by Hamas, many Jewish institutions and organizations began advocating and coming together to show their support for the Jewish state.

The Chabad of Hewlett banded together on Oct. 9 as members filled every chair leaving some attendees standing during the prayer service.

Rabbi Nochem Tenenboim invited children from the community to light candles to start the gathering. He invited Neil Kupferman, lawyer and sponsor of Chabad of Hewlett to the podium to speak on the recent events.

“Not only do the terrorists seek the destruction of Israel but also the shared values that bid together the United States and the Jewish state, freedom and justice,” Kupferman said.

He also urged the audience to not accept any blame placed on Israeli people for defense of their lives and land.

“This is a holocaust and must be stopped, the perpetrators must be alienated, the must be stopped and Israel must be given the availability to do it, the world has to allow them to defend themselves, the world has to allow the to avenge the souls that were lost,” Kupfer-

man said.

Jay Saltzman, Hewlett resident who established Hewlett for Israel, supporting Israel as a United States ally spoke about donating, voting, contacting representatives and educating children.

“You know what happens when we don’t vote, other people vote, they get organized and people you don’t want representing you are going to represent you,” Saltzman said.

Tenenboim led prayers and called upon community members to light candles in honor of Israeli soldiers, Jews from the former Soviet Union, Israeli fathers and mothers killed, community activists killed, first responders and medical professionals.

“Many people keep asking me, how is my family doing now under the attack and my answer is terrible,” Tenenboim said. “Nine hundred of them killed, murdered, slaughtered.”

Tenenboim re peated that these events were the closest thing we’ve seen to the holocaust. He also condemned the actions of Hamas and warned the community of the danger that all Jews are in currently.

“Hamas are not terrorists, they’re not there to put terror, they’re not warriors, they’re not there to fight for a piece of land, they’ve got everything in

Gaza,” Tenenboim said. “They’re there for one reason and one reason at all, to kill Jews, they want Jewish blood, and they’re Nazis.”

Tenenboim assured the community that he is there to comfort them, despite the danger at hand.

“I may scream too much, but this is the reality, sometimes when you scream and you take the right action, you save so many other problems,” he said.

Stuck in Israel

Shalom Maidenbaum and his wife, Iris, who live in Lawrence, are in Jerusalem on holiday when the attack began. The couple has had trouble getting a flight back to the United States.

Shalom said they are currently out of harms way but plan to head home.

“We wanted to really stay and help, but it really seems we may be more of a burden if we stay and help,” Shalom said. “We have a lot of family here and they all serve in the IDF and we’re torn between leaving them and worrying about ourselves for the immediate term.”

He is heavily involved with Hatzalah Inter national, who have mobilized, sending volunteer medics to the front line.

The Lawrence boys’ volleyball team is enjoying a bit of a resurgence after a forgettable 2022 season and suddenly finds itself in the thick of the conference title race heading into the home stretch of the season.

The Golden Tornadoes ended September with four straight wins and sit third in the six-team Division II Conference B standings with a 5-3 mark (5-2 conference), just behind Hewlett and West Hempstead. Last season, the team started 4-4 before losing seven of its last eight matches, including six 3-0 defeats.

This year’s start even impressed coach George Klein, who coached some of his players during their middle school days.

“We’re just taking it game by game and trying to build up as many wins as we can to qualify for the playoffs,” he said.

“That’s the main goal right here, right now. I am pleasantly surprised with how far along we’ve come. I really am.”

The turning point of the season came in a home match against Wantagh on Sept. 20. After starting the season 1-2, the Golden Tornadoes split the first two sets with the Warriors before gutting out 25-21 and 27-25 wins in the final two sessions to kick start their winning streak.

“I think in the second half of that game, a lot of my sophomores and even my freshman who’s starting in the middle for me, they started to gain some confidence,” Klein said. “They played loose, and I think that was the turning point of the season.”

The team is already building a core for future seasons, starting with sophomore Elijah Tolley. The outside hitter led the team in kills in each of the eight games to total 121 – more than double his closest teammate – and is the Golden Tornadoes’ top server with 19 aces.

“He’s turning into a complete, allaround player,” Klein said. “He pretty much does everything well and some things he does really well, like his serving. He does come up with some blocks and a couple of digs every once in a while, and he’s a great kid.”

Tolley has formed a nice chemistry with fellow sophomore and setter Mailo Rozas, who has collected 182 assists this season. He is averaging almost 23 helpers per contest and surpassed 30 twice, including a season-high 33 in a 3-1 loss to South Side on Oct. 4.

“They’ve been playing together for years and they’re only sophomores, so they definitely have a chemistry together,” Klein said. “The future is so bright.

It’s exciting.”

second on the team with 59 kills, including a season-high 15 against Hewlett on Sept. 12, and the former starting setter also had 10 assists against Elmont two days later. Junior Derrick Reyes has been strong on both ends of the floor with 40 kills, 26 assists, 17 blocks and 10 aces.

Freshman Corey Shakur is the team’s top blocker with 19 and junior middle Angel Vazquez has chipped in 8. Sophomores Fernando Larios and Sehil Dhoundiyal are among the team’s best receivers on defense with a combined 57 digs.

“I never had to comfort someone like that, but when you see people who need help and know you can, your instincts tell you to help,” Frederick-Branch recounted. “She was, like, panicking, and didn’t know what to do, so the first thing I thought of was just making sure she was OK.” The players pushed the woman’s vehicle out of traffic to the side of the road, and Frederick-Branch wanted to do more.

“Once you get that first heartfelt thank-you and hug, it just becomes addicting,” he said. “It makes you want to do more, and that’s when we started to help more and more cars.”

Over the course of an hour and a half, as the rain continued, the teammates pushed nearly 10 vehicles out of the water and onto the side of Peninsula Boulevard.

Many of the boys have played football since middle school, and have learned how to work together as a team, some leading, others following and all adjusting to changing conditions.

“It teaches you the respect

aspect,” Sheinin said of what football had taught him. “We’re all a family. We practice together, hang out together and work together, and it just shows our teamwork and patience with each other.”

Hewlett High varsity football coach John Palladino, who has coached for over 10 years, said he wasn’t surprised by what his players had done as word of their exploits made its way around the school the following Monday.

“I was pleased to hear about it,” Palladino said. “This team is full of character, and I’m not surprised the kids did that on their own, because it says so much about them.”

At Woodmere Middle School, there’s a new initiative called “Gotcha!” for students who are caught doing an act of kindness, and recognized by a staff member with a “Gotcha” card posted in the main hallway. The school honored the football players for their actions, and Sheinin said it was all about coming together for their community.

“We were just doing it to help,” he said, “but it’s nice to know people saw us, and are thanking us for something that we did.”

Rep. Anthony D’Esposito says the GOP is not in chaos

If there is one thing Republican Congressman Anthony D’Esposito wants his constituents to know, it is that there is still someone on Capital Hill with the tenacity and understanding of what the 4th Congressional District needs, a district that includes the Five Towns.

“I was sent to Washington D.C. to work and to govern,” the Island Park native said. “That has been exactly what I’ve been doing since I’ve been sworn in.”

But during his last trip in Washington, D’Esposito was part of a historic moment as Kevin McCarthy of California was removed from the House speaker position on Oct. 3, a motion made by fellow Republican Matt Gaetz of Florida. The motion to vacate passed with 216 to 210 votes.

“The fact that one rolled member of our conference joined forces with seven others (Republicans) and every single Democrat in the House of Representatives for the first time in our history to vacate the chair of the Speaker of the House is not good for the American people,” D’Esposito said. “It is not good for our institution and us as a governing body.”

The motion came after McCarthy leaned toward Democratic support for a short-term bill to keep the government open through mid-November, avoiding a shutdown.

It took 15 rounds in January for McCarthy to be elected as speaker, where he agreed to multiple concessions, including one that allowed any member to put forward a motion to vacate his speakership at any time.

All four of Long Island’s Republican cong ressmen supported McCarthy, including Andrew Garbarino, Nick LaLota and George Santos.

D’Esposito said the motion made by Gaetz was fueled by a personal vendetta against McCarthy.

“The fact that Matt Gaetz was utiliz-

ing rules in order to take out personal issues is not what the rules of the House should be used for,” he said. “That’s not what our governing bodies should be used for.”

The seven other Republicans who joined Gatez were Andy Biggs (Arizona), Ken Buck (Colorado), Tim Burchett (Tennessee), Eli Crane (Arizona), Bob Good (Virginia), Nancy Mace (South Carolina) and Matt Rosendale (Montana).

When D’Esposito was in law enforcement he worked primarily in a teambased atmosphere, he said. Many of his partners had different color skins, religious beliefs and political ideologies, but looking past that, they worked together to get the job done.

As a congressman he said he brought that style to D.C. “I think law enforcement, especially the NYPD, has been one of the greatest educations for me serving this role in government and politics,” he said. “It gives you the ability to read people, to understand what people are saying, to communicate and work with people that you nor mally wouldn’t get to work with.”

“Shambles,” “Dysfunctional,” and “Out of control” read the headlines read across news outlets in describing the GOP. However, D’Esposito said that it’s a small group. He stressed that there are people who are still working for their constituents.

“When people try to comment that the Republican Party is in chaos, there is a small group of individuals who are causing chaos,” he said. “Our conference is not chaos, but when the smoke clears, there are individuals, especially me, who still has his sleeves rolled up and is still working tremendously hard to deliver for the people of this district.”

As of press time, a new speaker is yet to be chosen. GOP members Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise were the frontrunners for the post. Democrats remain solidly supportive of current Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Ali looks to improve quality of life for all

If there is anyone who is tough on crime, Sheharyar Ali says he is.

Running for the Nassau County Legislature seat currently held by Carrié Solages, the prosecutor has wielded the law through district attorneys in both Nassau County and Brooklyn, bringing justice and holding criminals accountable.

Ali is from Brooklyn, but spent the better part of his childhood and young adult life in Elmont. The 30-yearold father of two firmly believes in the promise of his district as one suitable for families to raise their children in peace while enjoying the benefits of sitting at the gates of New York City.

But he believes that promise is under threat.

“I feel, over the years, that suburban quality of life has been affected. It’s getting more congested,” Ali told reporters during a recent Herald Roundtable session.

“The quality of life is just degrading. And instead of packing up my bags and moving, I decided to do something about it and actually step into a race and make a positive impact on the community.”

Ali’s aim is squarely on the island’s affordability crisis, looking to ease the tax burden by cutting down on excessive spending and holding down the tax rate.

“The county has a huge surplus,” Ali said. “We have the money. There’s no reason why we should be raising people’s taxes.”

Ali is also keen on investing in affordable housing that respects the home rule of local zoning boards while still meeting the needs of “longtime homeowners, recent homeowners, and young people looking to buy a

While a relative newcomer to the political scene, Ali has made waves in his community as something of a local hero. When the distribution of baby formula dried nationwide last year, Ali worked with his brother

Hamza Akram to collect nearly 300 bottles of baby formula to distribute at the Masjid Hamza Islamic Center Mosque in Valley Stream.

In response to the overwhelming need, Ali contacted county agencies to give out shipments of formula to shelters across the county through a partnership between the Nassau County Office of Asian American Affairs, and the Nassau County Department of Social Services.

“I’m a Muslim American. And there’s a huge influx of a Muslim American population in my district,” Ali said. “I feel like it’s a population that’s been ignored for a very, very long time. So, there’s excitement now people feel like they have a voice. People feel like they’re being heard, and they’re being represented.”

The increase of police patrols to protect mosques and other sensitive areas has been nothing but a win in the eyes of Ali. He’s worked closely with the Nassau County Police Department to have officers come out and speak to the students at the Hamza Academy in Valley Stream to show children a human face behind the badge.

He believes ensuring an atmosphere of safety ultimately starts with forging “a positive relationship of mutual trust and respect between the police, the local legislator, and the community.”

“That’s how you have a safe neighborhood,” Ali said, “and a safe community.”

Solages prides himself in getting things done

Chances are likely that those living around Elmont and Valley Stream will recognize Carriè Solages around town — even if he’s wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses.

The 12-year county legislator has connections all throughout the district. Throughout his tenure, Solages has made it a point to live in various areas to get acquainted with the communities he serves. He has lived in north and south Valley Stream, Elmont, and currently calls Lawrence home.

“I’m a product of my community,” Solages told reporters during a recent Herald roundtable session.

The legislator is no stranger to reaching across county borders for help. He highlighted the importance of working with government officials outside of Mineola’s reach to serve the community, like when he worked with Queens borough president Donovan Richards to fix issues surrounding flooding in the Five Towns.

“I’m leaving the area better than it was when I came here,” Solages said. His infrastructure legislation was a project with Richards to remedy flooding problems that involved the Five Towns’ neighboring borough.

Formed relationships and reaching not just across county borders, but all the way up to the Assembly and state Senate in Albany, are important to circumvent any stalemates in the legislature. In 2022, Solages and his fellow Democrats in the minority helped expand the eligibility pool for tax benefits with a proposal sent to Albany. He said the support for the expansion is one of his greatest achievements since being elected.

“That’s one clear thing that any person who is running for office in Nassau County must address: the property taxes,” Solages said. “Help people get benefits, reductions, and other opportunities to have a fighting

As the price to live in Nassau rises, Solages says the solution is to increase the housing supply. When Gov. Kathy Hochul proposed a housing plan that would create or preserve 100,000 affordable homes across the state, Solages described it as poorly packaged with the “affordable housing” label. The plan received pushback in Nassau, with Hochul eventually backtracking on the idea.

But that doesn’t mean Solages didn’t do his part to try

and salvage what the governor wanted to do. He reached out to Hochul, telling her if the plan was packaged as “increased housing stock,” it might be successful.

“The average person, who does not have the salary that I have as an attorney, they’re looking at paying $4,500 to $5,000 a month for rent,” Solages said. “That’s not realistic. That’s not sustainable. So, we have a problem here on our hands, and we must address it.”

Solages says he takes a conservative stance despite his political standing, supporting quality of life initiatives when it comes to public safety. He secured funds in 2017 to implement ShotSpotter technology in Elmont.

The gunshot sound detection device received mixed reactions from the community with concerns it could drive away economic development.

“I also secured funding for license plate readers all across the border,” Solages said. “So that when offenses occur between the border — between those who live in New York City looking for quick opportunities to make money by robbing or taking advantage of people here in Nassau County — our borders are protected.”

Solages believes the goal of public servants is to provide safety for their communities. He highlighted the inequities of arrests and agreed with the message of abolitionist Frederick Douglass that it is easier to educate a person properly than it is to fix a broken person.

“Nevertheless, we have to make the right investments in law enforcement due to the proximity that we have to New York City,” Solages said. “But to be very clear, the crime rate has gone down here in Nassau County, and we have the safest suburban community of its size.”

It’s a tight rope walk, between supporting law enforcement and bringing to light the inequities of arrest records. He posed that in his next term, he would explore the implementation of a civilian review board for the police department.

Mullaney: Leadership starts with just listening

Patrick Mullaney spent his entire life as a registered Democrat. But he hopes voters will send him to Mineola to represent them on the Nassau County Legislature not as a Democrat, but instead as a Republican.

Why? Mullaney wants to promote conversation and unity — on both sides.

“There’s a gap that needs to be bridged,” Mullaney told reporters as part of a recent Herald Roundtable session.

“I know it’s in politics and government, but I believe that gap transcends that, and is heavily in society.”

Mullaney has lived in Long Beach for the past 30 years, involved in a number of community organizations— all while a member of the New York City Fire Department, where he is now a special ops lieutenant.

This is his first real experience politically, but Mullaney says that’s a good thing: It allows him to come in fresh, new, and more relatable.

“I think coming into politics from a fresh perspective can sometimes be a benefit,” he said. “Now you’re coming at it from a fresh angle — more of a constituent point of view, rather than somebody who’s been involved. I think it’s a nice combination that puts me in a unique spot to make a difference, and to make an impact.”

Something Mullaney would want to tackle as a legislator is holding the line on taxes for the people he would represent in Long Beach, Oceanside, Island Park, Atlantic Beach, East Atlantic Beach and Lido Beach. The one downside of not coming from a political background is he hasn’t had the opportunity to “really sit down and see” the county budget in full. He can only see it as any of the rest of us could.

Yet, that also gives him insight, Mullaney said. Living day-to-day outside of the government sphere allows him to see first-hand how hard it is to live in Long Beach

Patrick Mullaney doesn’t have a storied career in politics, which he says will help him see things from the point of because of the costs. He believes the current administration led by Bruce Blakeman has done a nice job of not raising county taxes, but that Long Island is still becoming pretty tough to live on.

But Mullaney isn’t a fan of Equinor’s offshore wind project, which would construct wind turbines miles offshore as a way of generating electricity for the region.

Still, he isn’t totally against it, either. For now, however, Equinor needs to be put on hold until the company does a better job of addressing negative perspectives on the project.

“It needs to be discussed more,” Mullaney said. “They haven’t said anything to sway people. So, until it comes back further in the middle between good and bad, I’m against it.”

Mullaney also advocates for more police resources to

create better community relations, and more officers walking beats instead of simply driving through them.

He wants more forums between the departments and the community members they protect, but he also wants officers to just be able to walk up to someone and chat with them more.

Mullaney also wants to focus on hate crimes — especially those of an antisemitic nature through words and graffiti.

“We need to continue on the trend that we’re on (of condemning such acts) and keep it in the forefront of people’s minds,” he said. “If someone don’t fall in a particular category that they think could make them a victim of hate crime, they may not think about it. But if you keep reminding people that it does exist, you potentially increase their sensitivity.

“We need to couple that with promoting much more communication on it.”

Beyond all that, Mullaney wants to address overdevelopment and affordable housing. Most of his experience is with Long Beach, but he has seen around the island that changes need to happen.

“The needs of Rockville Centre or Manhasset versus the needs of Long Beach are very different, because they’re very different communities,” Mullaney said. “We definitely need affordable housing. I have two kids, and my parents just had to move in with my wife and I … because they just couldn’t afford their home anymore. It’s definitely something that has to be addressed.”

“Your number one job is to listen to people,” Mullaney said, “and get back to them.”

Pace ready to continue being county’s advocate

Alexis Pace wouldn’t say she has had the longest career in politics. She would say, however, that she’s been a community advocate for quite some time.

And that’s all thanks to Pace’s daughter. Without her, Pace says she wouldn’t be where she is today — running for a seat with the Nassau County Legislature.

Pace’s daughter was born with Down syndrome, and when it was time for her to start school, the family faced some resistance. Pace had to be her daughter’s numberone advocate, which ultimately taught her a lot.

“She showed me how to really fight for people who don’t have a voice,” Pace said. “My daughter literally can’t speak. What that means for families is I know how intimidating it can be when you have the world or things stacked against you, and you need somebody to be able to be a strong, fierce advocate.”

She doesn’t want people to think she’s just a special needs advocate, though.

Pace has been on numerous school boards, including as co-president of the Special Education PTA, and vice president of the Central Council PTA. She has been on the Long Beach school board since 2021. Working through these groups has given her insight into what exactly she wants to address in Mineola.

“The inequities that I saw really motivated me to take a step further,” Pace said. “I’m always looking to fill gaps, be a community advocate, and be the voice of people that just don’t have one. I would say that’s the best way to describe who I am as a person.”

A lot of that starts with millions of dollars of Covid-19 relief money that had been earmarked for Nassau County. Some funding has gone out, but not among the communities Pace hopes she’ll have a chance to represent.

Alexis Pace says learning to be her daughter’s full-time advocate has prepared her to be Nassau County’s advocate as well.

Biking in and around Long Beach, East Atlantic Beach, Atlantic Beach and Lido Beach rivals driving as the main form of transportation. Biking is these areas can be a tad tricky — and dangerous — since a lot of the lanes are on the sides of the streets, except for the Long Beach boardwalk.

Pace wants to work on expanding the areas for bikers, and making them safer.

“When I say bike lanes, I don’t mean taking away lanes of traffic,” she said, “but specifically working on making our area more comfortable for bikers and for walkers.”

As a school board member, Pace has seen how many middle and high school students live too close to their respective schools to get a bus. So, they walk or ride in the mornings and afternoons, which in turn has created significant safety issues since current traffic patterns don’t

necessarily support pedestrian-friendly travel.

She also has an eye on safety and policing. She would like to see more police officers hired, but also more emphasis on addressing their mental health — especially after working so many hours during the pandemic when most everyone else was inside.

Additionally, for nearly the past year entirely, Equinor, Empire Wind and alternative energy has been a backand-forth discussion — and sometimes argument. A plan was made to build giant wind turbines off the coast of Long Beach that would bring power for those living in its wake. There are people for it and against many parts of it — like cables running under streets — if they’re not against the project altogether.

Pace’s big thing? How details are getting out.

“I immediately identified that there were some serious issues with the way the information was being shared with the public,” she said. “When you have a project of this magnitude that is going to be so different than what people are accustomed to, no matter what, it causes some level of fear, questioning and anxiety. It’s just human nature.”

Her issue with the way it has been rolled out is that without the input from Equinor and some of the other key people that can be objective, it has allowed so much noise on each side, completely politicizing the topic. It is no longer, in her estimation, about the project anymore, but about people’s agendas — which she is adamantly against.

Pace is running for Denise Ford’s seat, and commends the long-time public figure’s advocacy for regular breast cancer screenings and mammography vans in and around Long Beach. Pace was diagnosed with breast cancer last October and had her mastectomy a month later.

Her one-year anniversary of the surgery? Election Day, Nov. 7.

Thousands expected for breast cancer walk

A wave of pink will wash over the South Shore this weekend, bringing awareness to breast cancer.

Jones beach will see thousands walking for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer on Sunday. Hosted by the American Cancer Society and presented by Teachers Federal Credit Union, the walk is anticipated to be one of the biggest in the country, expected to attract more than 60,000 participants, raising more than $2 million.

According to Katie Schafer, executive director for the Long Island region of the non-profit organization.

“It really just brings together all walks of life here on Long Island,” said Katie Schafer, executive director for the cancer society’s local region.

The event, celebrating its 30th anniversary, sees all sorts of participants come together to raise awareness and fund research for breast cancer. Companies, families and cancer survivors all unite to make a difference at Jones Beach, Schafer said, because the disease is all too familiar.

“Everyone you talk to knows somebody who has been diagnosed with breast cancer,” she said.

Joanne Ameruoso is someone who knows all too well. Her grandmother, aunt and mother all died from breast

cancer. The Merrick resident was angry after her mother’s death in 2013 because her mom refused to seek treatment and did not tell her about the disease until a few days before she died.

“My mom passed away from breast cancer because she was afraid of it so much that she chose to ignore it when she discovered it.” Ameruoso said.

K n o w i n g h e r f a m i l y h i s t o r y, Ameruoso sought to get genetic testing.

She was negative for the BRCA gene, which puts women at a much higher risk. But when her doctor told her she was a ticking time bomb due to her family history, Ameruoso took preventive measures.

“I’m not going to be another victim of this breast cancer,” she said.

Ameruoso underwent a double mastectomy in 2016. In the process, she learned she had Lynch syndrome, an inherited genetic disorder that increases risk for several cancers, including stomach, colon, liver, brain, skin and endometrial. Acting early showed Ameruoso how important it is to get screened and research family genetics.

“We have to stay educated,” she said, “because, God forbid, you find out when it’s too late.”

Ameruoso has been an advocate for breast cancer awareness for more than 20 years now. She has participated in breast cancer walks and even wrote a memoir, “Faith Over Fear,” about how

her mom’s fear of breast cancer became her fight. The book — written while she was coping with her mother’s death — aimed to help women overcome the fear associated with cancer.

For Ameruoso, it is important to be proactive in raising awareness.

“This is a time for us to come together and really show the people working behind the scenes all year long to continue the fight against breast cancer and all cancers,” she said.

Breast cancer walks have made significant monetary contributions to

research and breakthroughs for treatment medications such as tamoxifen and trastuzumab, more commonly known by its brand, Herceptin.

“Since 1993, we’ve seen a 42 percent reduction in cancer mortality,” Schafer said. “And that is just because of walks like these.”

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach will take place at Field 5, with a rolling start between 7 and 10 a.m.

Health care pros honored at Herald

It’s an event that’s not just about recognition, but about celebrating — and giving heartfelt thanks — to those who have been “guardians of Long Islanders’ well-being.”

Those were the words of Amy Amato, executive director of RichnerLive, to kick off the second annual Herald Long Island Excellence in Healthcare Awards.

It was not only cocktail, dinner and dessert, but a night of awards, handed out by ABC-7 investigative reporter Kristin Thorne at The Heritage Club at Bethpage on Sept. 27. A portion of ticket proceeds — as usual with RichnerLive events — went to a local charity. For this event, that recipient was Mental Health Association of Nassau County.

Tara Buonocore-Rut, president and chief executive of CenterLight Healthcare Pace, was among the recipients.

“It’s such an honor, it’s really not an honor for me,” she said. “It’s an honor for my team and all the work that we do to care for the elderly.”

“I feel like I’m almost not in the same league as all of these people,” she said.

Carol Gomes, chief executive and operating officer at Stony Brook Hospital, says health care is not an industry of individuals, but rather of the collective.

“I’m so glad that health care has prominence in the public eye,” she said. “I don’t really consider this really an honor for me, but rather, it’s health care as a team sport.”

Manna Project seeks to expand services to give back, she created the organization in 2020. At the time, she was working in a sleep-care center, after 10 years in the food industry and, before that, 15 years in health care. Because sleep care requires respiratory studies, the facility was closed amid the coronavirus pandemic. Hester wanted to find a way to continue helping those in need.

Since 2021, Hester, along with family members and other volunteers, has manned a food distribution center outside St. John’s Baptist Church, also in Inwood, every other Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

proponent that people should have a fair and just opportunity for good health,” she said. “There are misconceptions that you go to a food bank and you’ll get healthy food. I make sure that people that come to our pantry get fruits and vegetables.”

The Manna Project also collaborates with Cornell Cooperative Extension, a educational resource connecting communities with research.

“During the summertime we have a summer youth project with the children,” Hester said. “They were able to make smoothies, and they loved them.”

In the future, she hopes to operate in a specific Manna Project facility, and to teach community members how to eat nutritious foods on a limited budget.

“We’ve operated since Day One outside St. John’s Baptist Church,” Hester said. “We’re looking for more space that we’re able to grow into.”

The organization also hopes to expand its services in the future to include low-income housing.

Lung Force walk makes debut on Long Island Anyone can get lung cancer.

That’s what the American Lung Association wants people to know, and this past Saturday, walkers put their lungs to the test, and took part in the inaugural Lung Force Walk on Long Island in Eisenhower Park.

The event, which raises funds and awareness for vital lung disease, research, education and advocacy, kicked at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 7.

Alongside the walk, those participating in the event enjoyed a range of activities throughout the morning, as well as informational tents set up around Field 6 of the park in East Meadow, where people

Funds from the Lung Force Walk will support the lung association’s annual work in research, educational initiatives, and its advocacy work on state and federal levels.

Emily Amitin, a development director with the lung association’s metro New York and Northern/Central New Jersey area, says the Lung Force Walk came about when organizers realized many people didn’t know how dangerous some lung inflictions — especially cancer — are.

“Through a lot of our surveying, we realized that while cancer was top of mind for individuals, people don’t know that it’s the number one cancer killer nationwide of both men and women,” Amitin said. “Anyone with lungs can get lung cancer. It’s not just a smoker’s disease.”

Event speakers at this weekend’s walk included Dr. Nagashree Seetharamu of Northwell Health and lung cancer survivor Carol Silva, who was also a longtime anchor for News12.

To conclude the celebration, second and third grade students returned to their classrooms and enjoyed churros, a traditional Spanish pastry, provided by the school’s Parent Teacher Association.

by Lawrence Primary School students — first, second and third grades — is on display in the Long Island Children’s Museum Community Gallery.

The museum is at 11 Davis Ave., in Garden City.

Every school year, students at the school learn about artists from history and explore their own creativity in classes led by art teacher Anne Young.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to share our work with others,” Young said in a news release. “Our student artists use art to explore and share their thoughts, ideas and feelings.

They have worked hard to create these pieces and it’s wonderful to see their creativity and talent recognized in a public way.”

Middle school students highlights Hispanic Heritage Month

Lawrence Middle School students gathered in the Social Emotional Learning room and had different Hispanic dishes to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

The first two weeks of Hispanic Heritage Month — Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 — were celebrated at Lawrence Middle School as students initially showcased their language skills reciting poems by Hispanic poets over the school’s public address system to spotlight cultural literature and encouraging exploration of diverse forms of artistic expression.

Students also recited the Pledge of Allegiance in English and Spanish.

Performing popular Hispanic songs from a variety of genres during the time students moved from class to class continued the celebration in the second week. In the Social Emotional Learning

room, students ate Hispanic dishes during lunch in the third week. A set of different activities will close out the celebration the week of Oct. 9.

“We believe it is crucial to celebrate and honor the diverse cultures within our school community,” middle school Principal Willis Perry said in a news release. “Hispanic Heritage Month allows us to educate our students about the rich history, traditions and contributions of the Hispanic communities.

A. Continuing from last week, the design of how a building will look is sometimes decided by the building owner, and sometimes the owner lets the architect be artistic in creative and inventive ways. Unfortunately, not all architects are given the opportunity to create as much as they would like to, because either local governments won’t onte eeper allow it or the owner wants something particular.

Some communities have special committees, called boards, to look at the architect’s design and then create parameters for what can be done.

Sometimes this is a good thing, and sometimes the architect doesn’t have any choice but to change the design to something less daring, challenging or artistic. That’s why people travel away from where they live to see special buildings in places where the buildings are thought of as works of art instead of just average.

In some communities, the architect can only use certain materials, so the new building matches the ones around it, and some areas require that the building be raised higher to prevent being flooded.

It’s possible to use the same materials in different ways, but some community governments don’t encourage this. The outside appearance is sometimes very fancy and artful, and the materials chosen may have symbolic meaning, such as the opera house that looks like a series of sails on sailboats next to the harbor in Sydney, Australia, or a power plant with a roof that doubles as a ski slope in Copenhagen, Denmark.

In some places you can see several buildings that stand in an area like works of art in a gallery. If you walk along the Highline in Manhattan, for example, it’s like walking through an art gallery, where you can see many artful and experimental uses of concrete, wood and steel.

Unique buildings, the ones intended to be unusual on purpose, are often much more expensive to build, and that’s another reason why you only see unusual designs in special places, where the cities and towns want to have them. Columbus, Indiana, home to Cummins Engines, is a city that has many unique designs, but only because the local government wants to have their city be a home to special buildings. In some communities, such as Italian towns and cities, the buildings are very old, but are not allowed to be changed on the outside because it would change the character of the places where tourism is their number one means of income.

he removal of Kevin McCarthy as speaker of the House of Representatives, led by perennial malcontent Matt Gaetz, was disgraceful, and will have lasting negative implications for Congress and the nation.

A vote to remove a speaker during his or her term of office is virtually unprecedented.

The last time it was attempted was in 1910, over a century ago, and that vote was unsuccessful.

Speaker Joe Cannon was not removed. In fact, pETER during my 28 years in ConKinG gress, my office was in the Cannon House Office Building, named after Speaker Cannon. History can be its own reward.

The speaker of the House is second in line to succeed the president. He or she heads a powerful arm of government, and is elected by a vote of the entire House. Throughout our history, the tradition has been that the majority party votes at a party conference to select its candidate for speaker, and the minority party does the same. Both candidates are then nominated on the floor of the House. When the full

House votes, no matter how close the inter-party vote is, the candidate of the majority party is elected speaker. This reflects the will of the American people to have the House run by someone the majority party has selected.

To remove the speaker — to “vacate the chair” — is such an extraordinary action that it should be based on criminal conduct or serious acts of moral turpitude by the speaker.

It should not be a political decision. Yet that’s exactly what happened last week, when eight far-right Republicans allied themselves with 208 Democrats to remove McCarthy, who had the support of 96 percent of Republicans.

This was strictly a power play by Gaetz and his gang of hostage-takers.

There isn’t one significant issue that these eight outliers have in common with the 208 Democrats and their minority leader, Hakeem Jeffries. This was a defeat for tradition and a victory for Gaetz and his unbridled ambition and lust for national publicity.

Gaetz accused McCarthy of conspiring with Democrats because McCarthy forged a bipartisan coalition with them to keep the government open after the Gaetz crowd refused to support Republican legislation to prevent a shut-

down. This was an obvious ploy by Gaetz to set McCarthy up for failure. If McCarthy hadn’t passed bipartisan legislation to keep the government open, Gaetz would have accused him of poor leadership. When the speaker did the responsible thing, Gaetz virtually accused him of collaborating with the enemy. This is the ultimate hypocrisy, because Gaetz gave congressional Democrats power and influence they would not have had otherwise.

I’ve known McCarthy since he was first elected to Congress in 2006. I saw him work his way up through various leadership positions, and have always been impressed by him. Most important, he always kept his word to me. As speaker, he overcame massive political obstacles to get serious legislation through the House.

The reality is that Democrats control the White House and the Senate, while Republicans have a small majority in the House. Keeping that majority together required the skills of a juggler and a magician, plus extraordinary patience. The 221 House Republicans constitute a wide variety of philosophical and geographic views and beliefs. For instance, a Republican from rural Mississippi would have a

very different agenda from a blue-collar conservative Republican representing suburban Long Island. It was McCarthy’s arduous and unenviable task to find common ground while accommodating these disparate agendas. (Let me commend Long Island Representatives Andrew Garbarino, Anthony D’Esposito and Nick LaLota for always taking their jobs seriously by working with McCarthy to get results for their districts and our region, and not grandstanding or taking cheap shots.)

McCarthy has decided not to run again for speaker. I certainly can’t blame him, though his talents and abilities will be sorely missed. I don’t in any way envy his successor. Not only will he or she have to work with a razor-thin majority, but now that the unwritten tradition of not removing a speaker for personal political aggrandizement has been shattered, the next speaker will also have to operate under the constant threat that a disgruntled minority of the majority might conspire with the minority party to create chaos.

Congress won’t be the same. Thanks for the terrific job, Kevin, and doing what you could to preserve sanity!

Once more, Israel goes to war

ike everyone in our community and all right-minded people in the world, I am horrified by the heinous terrorist attacks that occurred in Israel beginning last weekend. The deliberate, premeditated slaughter of hundreds of civilians, on one of the holy days of the Jewish year, by a genocidal terrorist group is beyond description in words.

We know that in wars fought in civilian areas, civilians are, unfortunately, killed. But to specifically plan for the wholesale, deliberate HoWARD murder of famiBREssLER lies in their homes, concertgoers and others, and the kidnapping of old people, children and women to use as bargaining chips or psychological warfare props boggles the civilized mind — and thrills only the diseased one.

This attack was a terrible blow to Israel and Jews worldwide. It is reminiscent to me of the Yom Kippur War. I was too young to understand what was happening when that war began in October 1973, but I remember the sense of fear that hung over the adults around me, and the nervous prayers led by my kindergarten teachers. That same feeling of desperately needing but not being able to access information, because of the holiday, afflicted me last weekend.

Everyone was adding bits of information they had picked up from newspapers or messages conveyed by neighbors, and the news just kept getting worse. Our enemies had wounded us, and more pain was likely to come. But unlike the war 50 years ago, I do not truly fear for Israel’s survival. has racked Israel for many months, they may have scored a blow, but they have badly miscalculated, because when the threat comes from without, the core within hardens.

This past Shabbat, Shemini Atzeret, we read Kohelet. And Kohelet instructs us that there is a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to wail and a time to dance. But what happens when those things need to be done at the same time?

Simchat Torah is always a time of rejoicing and dancing, singing and glorifying. But this Simchat Torah was also a time to weep and wail. So our celebrations were tempered and our vigilance heightened, but we did dance. And we did sing. Because to do otherwise would be to allow our enemies to take even more than they already have. And for what they have taken, we will extract a price.

here is a time for war, and a time for peace. One day it will be time for peace.

There is a time to kill, and a time to heal. Unfortunately, we are now forced to do the former, and in the process we are doing the latter.

There is a time to wreck, and a time to build. Now we will wreck the infrastructure and, we hope, the leadership of our enemies, and continue to build our homeland.

There is a time to rend, and a time to mend. We rent our spiritual clothing these past days, and hopefully we are mending our people.

There is a time to love, and a time to hate. We are showing our love to our brothers and sisters, and venting our hatred on those who seek to destroy our brothers and sisters.

There is a time for war, and a time for peace. Now is the time for war.

One day it will be time for peace.

In Israel, war ends politics, diplomacy as usual

H

amas’s Saturday-morning assault on Israel was more than just a shocking demonstration of barbarism. The toll of Israeli dead and wounded — not to mention those kidnapped and taken to the Gaza Strip by these murderers — is sickening. And it should alarm and enrage civilized people everywhere.

The full extent of the horror on the southern border — coupled with a barrage of thousands of rockets and missiles fired at Israeli villages, towns and cities — is yet to be determined. Nor can we be sure what will follow after the first day of what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rightly characterized as a “war.” And whether it will spread to include Iran and its Hezbollah terrorist auxiliaries in Lebanon.

But we do know this: It is an event that changes the Middle East. All the rules that have governed the way Jerusalem deals with its terrorist foes and their Gaza stronghold since it fell under Hamas control in 2006 — in which the Israeli government and military have always sought to limit the conflict — must now be thrown out.

Above all, it must be an end to politics and diplomacy as usual in Israel, the diaspora and the West.

Whatever strategies and tactics that the Jewish state adopts as it seeks to reassert control over its border, rescue those held hostage, and punish those responsible for these crimes, some basic principles must govern the response to these events.

The first is that the Jewish people, and those who care about Israel, must unite.

After a year of political division and a culture war that threaten to tear Israeli society asunder and undermine its economy and security, those arguments must cease — there and elsewhere. The magnitude of this crisis is comparable to that of Israel’s wars in 1948, 1967 and 1973, and so must be the response of those who claim to be Israel’s friends and supporters.

It may be difficult to imagine the current politically fractured, more heavily assimilated Jewish community of the United States, that is far more alienated from Israel than it once was, coming together as it did during those days. But nevertheless, that is the model that the Jewish world and sympathetic non-Jews must follow. It must be clear to the world that when Israel is under attack and Jews are being murdered, the solidarity of the Jewish people and decent people everywhere with Israel must be unquestioned.

Second, there must be no tolerance or acceptance of the usual narratives and biased media coverage of the conflict, which focus more on Israel’s responses than on Palestinian terrorism itself, and which often seek to demonize the Jewish

state’s justified measures of self-defense.

Those who seek to wipe Israel off the map — whether by terrorism or political means — are engaging in a global attack on the Jewish people. The rising tide of antisemitism that is sweeping across the world in recent years is driven in large part by anti-Zionist propaganda. Anything that seeks to legitimize the goals of the terrorists to destroy Israel must be rightly labeled not just as hateful, but as a form of antisemitism that must not be normalized or allowed to be represented as part of mainstream opinion in the West.

If Hamas cared about the safety of the Palestinian Arabs languishing under their tyrannical Islamist rule in Gaza, they would not have started this war. They will, no doubt, continue to use the people under their control as human shields. That is a tragedy, but worries about the suffering of Palestinians caused by Hamas’s actions cannot be allowed to color the responses to efforts to save Israeli hostages and take out the terrorists and their military infrastructure.

The civilized world must fully support Israel’s counterattack. Any talk of proportionality or the need for restraint on the part of Israel as it copes with this assault on its citizens should be rejected.

Such bloody terrorism is not a natural response to Palestinian frustration or an effort — as Hamas falsely asserts — to prevent harm from being done to the mosques on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount.

When Hamas talks about ending the “occupation,” it is not speaking about pushing Israel back to the 1967 armistice lines, or complaints about Jews living in the heart of their homeland in Judea and Samaria or Jerusalem. As far as Hamas and other Palestinian groups are concerned, “occupation” refers to the existence of Israel within any boundaries.

Their goal is not freedom for their people. If that was what they wanted, the Islamists, as well as their supposedly more “moderate” opponents, would have accepted any one of the compromise peace offers extended to them in the past. What they want to do is to kill Jews and eliminate the Jewish state.

Sadly, such sentiments are also part of mainstream Palestinian political thought and culture. The shameful scenes in which Palestinians have been shown celebrating terrorism and exulting over the dead bodies of murdered Jews or hostages must not only not be forgotten, conclusions should be drawn about what this means in terms of the future of the conflict and what the goals of diplomacy should be.

Any reporting about this war that doesn’t make that clear isn’t merely biased against Israel, but constitutes an adoption of terrorist talking points that legitimize

their wrongful insistence on continuing their century-old war on Zionism that has become inextricably tied up with Palestinian national identity.

Third, Hamas and its allies must gain no political or diplomatic benefit from their crimes.

The current imperative for American foreign policy, and that of other nations, must be to ensure that this unprovoked and appalling tragedy is not exploited by the forces that have launched this war.

Any discussion in the current context of redoubled efforts to resurrect a two-state solution to the conflict — that Palestinians have repeatedly rejected over the past decades — must end. On the contrary, the existence of the terrorist-run independent Palestinian state in all but name in Gaza is proof that such a plan is a guarantee of more suffering and bloodshed.

Hamas — no doubt acting with the knowledge and support of Iran — seeks to derail the widening circle of peace in which Arab states have embraced normalized relations with Israel. This war is clearly, at least in part, a response to efforts to involve the Palestinians in negotiations between Saudi Arabia and Israel. The Jewish state’s burgeoning alliance with the desert kingdom is the result of rational assessments of the national interests of both Middle Eastern countries and their mutual fears about Tehran’s quest for regional hegemony and a nuclear weapon.

This war is a reminder that the Palestinians must no longer be allowed to hold Arab nations hostage to their intransigent refusal to accept the legitimacy of a Jewish state.

There will be time enough in the days and weeks ahead to fully assess how much responsibility those who have sought to appease both the Palestinian terror organizations and Iran must bear for this tragedy.

The same is true with respect to assigning blame for what can only be termed a catastrophic failure on the part of Israel’s security establishment.

But for now, the priority must be to ensure that Israel’s borders are protected, its people’s safety ensured, and that those responsible for these criminal acts are severely punished and no longer able to launch attacks on the Jewish state with impunity. Any other response from individuals, organizations and their leaders, politicians or governments is unacceptable.

May God watch over the people of Israel and those tasked with their defense. May their efforts be victorious. And may the hateful enemies of the Jewish state be made to understand that their crimes and evil intentions will no longer be tolerated by the civilized world.

n June 29, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down affirmative action in college admissions, stating that race cannot be a consideration and ordering institutions of higher learning to explore alternative means of achieving diverse student bodies. While many politicians want to weigh in and offer their opinions, it is best to offer the perspective of my intern, Mike Chang, whom affirmative action rules have personally impacted.

Here are Mike’s thoughts.

“Following the GeorGe surge of violent incidents targetsAntos ing Asian Americans after the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, the public overwhelmingly opposed the spike in racism and discrimination that was senselessly directed toward these citizens. For ostensibly the first time ever, the national

media acknowledged Asian Americans as minorities that face discrimination with virtuous motions to “Stop Asian Hate,” while corporations and elected officials zealously affirmed their support of the Asian community.

“Unfortunately, however, many in our society still fail to acknowledge that discrimination against Asian Americans is hardly unprecedented. For decades, the reality has remained largely unrecognized that although Asian Americans, by and large, achieve the highest scores, they have been disproportionately denied from our finest academic institutions.

“That is why, as an Asian American law school student, I applaud the Supreme Court for its decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard in favor of students who sued Harvard University for admissions policies that the court found overwhelmingly disadvantaged Asian Americans. To quote Justice

Clarence Thomas, in his insightful concurring opinion, those affirmative action policies ‘fly in the face of our colorblind Constitution.’ The ruling, which did away with affirmative action practices entirely, was certainly a much-needed legal victory for equal protection that sets the intuitive expectation that universities must follow the rule of law.

“But for the countless Asian Americans, including me, who have endured the devastating impacts of race-based admissions, the landmark decision is one that is personal. Despite receiving a 98th-percentile score on the Law School Admissions Test, or LSAT, I shared the experience with a staggering number of my Asian peers of receiving unexpected rejections from several top law schools when I applied. I am now a proud second-year student at the prestigious University of Texas-Austin School of Law. But the experience of possibly becoming reduced to a second-class citi-

My colleagues can attest that I couldn’t help but become emotional, not just for myself, but also for my friends since high school, all from immigrant families who struggled to get into their dream colleges despite working tirelessly to achieve nearly perfect SAT scores. At that moment, the relief that our Supreme Court delivered to the entire Asian American community moved me to feel especially privileged for the opportunity to pursue a legal career in a nation that is so committed to upholding equal opportunity, the Constitution, and impartial access to the American Dream.”

Letters For LIRR’s new interim president, there are new challenges ahead To the Editor: Metropolitan T ranspor tation Authority Chairman Janno Lieber’s appointment of Robert Free, the Long Island Rail Road’s senior vice president of operations, as interim LIRR president last month made sense.

There was no way Acting LIRR President Catherine Rinaldi could give her full attention to this critical full-time position. There were never enough hours in the day while Rinaldi was also serving as Metro-North Railroad president.

Promoting from within the LIRR management team makes sense. Rather than wasting time and money on a national search for a new LIRR president, Lieber should promote from within. Besides Free, there are a number of other very capable senior executives, including Executive Vice President Elisa Picca, Senior Chief Engineer Ed McGoldrick, and several others who could easily step in to fill this position full time. They, like Free, already have a good understanding of the LIRR’s organization, staff, operations, facilities and customers needs.

Any of them would be able to hit the ground running with little need for on-the-job training.

There are a number of issues fac-

ing management that recent Presidents Phil Eng and Rinaldi did not resolved. They include overtime abuse; out-of-control pensions; fare evasion; periodic cancellation and combining of trains due to signal, power and other problems in the East River tunnels and at Harold Interlocking, Jamaica Station and other locations; and several new union contracts. Some of these have gone on for far too long.

Amtrak will begin repairs to the four East River tunnels in 2024. This will result in the removal of one tunnel at a time from service. With access to only three tunnels, Free will need to develop a new Penn Station service plan. It should keep to a minimum the number of combined and canceled trains during this multiyear construction period.

Free may need to become more familiar with plans for capital projects and programs in coming years.

This should include a briefing by MTA headquarters staff assigned to complete the MTA 2025-2044 Twenty Year Capital Needs Plan. He should also be briefed on the status of previous promised, but unfulfilled, commitments by Eng and Rinaldi. That should include the critical potential for electrification of all diesel territory branches. This feasibility study began under Eng three years ago. To the best of my knowledge, it was never completed and made public.

Free will need to meet with and

develop a working relationship with the Federal Transit Administration Region 2 New York office. FTA plays a critical role in funding the LIRR capital program. And he must continue leading the LIRR to a state of good repair for the existing fleet, stations, signals, interlockings, track, power, yards and shops.

The FTA, Albany, other funding agencies, commuters, taxpayers, transit advocacy groups and elected officials at the local, county, state and federal levels all wish him success in his new role.
