The Nassau County Bridge Authority has disbanded the Atlantic Beach Bridge Citizens’ Committee, a group of village residents formed in January that aimed to reimagine the bridge’s nearly 70-year-old, 11-lane toll plaza and consider the best way to make use of the authority’s $5 million budget for the project.

The authority is now considering adding E-ZPass technology to the bridge.

“It was time for a modernization,” NCBA executive director Vincent Grasso said of the toll plaza, NAS, LYN, MAL, LON

The NCBA initially thought that soliciting community input would be a good place to start, so it contacted Atlantic Beach village officials, and a mix of officials and residents joined the 12-member committee, which met twice, in January and February. “We got some good input,” Grasso said.

Once again Five Towns Mini Golf and Batting Range in Lawrence is facing eviction as the nearly 45-year-old business received a July 8 letter from the New York State Department of Transportation claiming nonpayment of at least $26,000 in rent.

Marty Rosen, 80, who owns the seasonal business with his son Matt has operated eight months out of the year and under a state-issued property use and occupancy permit since 1978.

Last October, the Rosens received notice from the New York State Department of Transportation that the monthly rent would increase from $6,400 to $11,700 — an 82 percent increase — as of Jan. 1, 2022.

Similarly, in December 2015, the Rosens’ company, Three and Two Enterprises Inc., was hit with a 160 percent rent increase, from $4,750 to $12,435, reflecting the most recent DOT appraisal of the land’s value.

After 18 months of wrangling and an independent appraiser’s study of similar properties, the DOT instead raised the rent by 35 percent, to $6,412.50 per month beginning in May 2017. The business has seen five different increases over the last 45 years, Rosen said. He is hoping to reason with the DOT to prevent another massive rent increase.

“Bottom line, the increase is too much,” Rosen said, adding that he relies on a salary and won't be able to pay his bills if the business closes.

If the increase forces the business to

close, the DOT would be taking a staple away from the community, Rosen said.

“In this environment today — where people don't socialize, children don't socialize, it's all done with their cell phones, texting and this and that — this is one of the very, very few places where a family could come down, have some fun, and interact with each other and with the other customers that are on the premises while they're playing. And this has gone on for 45

years. Why does the state want to force us out of business?”

The DOT’s only interest is money, yet it claims there are no plans for the property, Rosen said, adding that the government favors big businesses.

The matter was addressed in the Inwood Lawrence Community News Facebook group, where group members expressed disappointment about the business struggling under increased rent.

“The story is they raised his rent by 82%,” Jackie Quiros posted in the group.

While some Facebook group posters supported the eviction notice, agreeing that Rosen should pay his debts, others were scared the community could lose a special piece of Lawrence. People also suspected that the DOT increased rent to run the business out and use the property for something else.

The people that use the business came when they were children and now bring their own children and grandchildren, Rosen said. It is also a popular spot for schools, camps and groups of adults with disabilities.

Bruce Blakeman remains at odds with Democrats over a $156 million borrowing plan intended to fund everything from public safety and police equipment to road upgrades.

Six Democrats in the Nassau County Legislature abstained during a vote last week after adding a series of road projects to the spending plan, including improvements to Franklin Avenue in Hempstead as well as to Babylon Turnpike and Nassau Road in Roosevelt.

Adding those projects were “illegal,” Blakeman said.

“You can’t fund a project that hasn’t been approved,” the county executive said. “The Democratic caucus and the county legislature chose to put politics above public safety by holding public safety hostage in a way that was completely illegal.”

More than $7.5 million had already been committed for Long Beach Road improvements, and another $1 million to complete Centennial Park in Roosevelt.

Republicans also had earmarked $350,000 to finish streets in Baldwin.

Democrats offered instead to borrow money for the police-related items in Blakeman’s capital plan like a dozen new ambulances, hundreds of bulletproof

vests, 1,300 stun guns, a police radio system, guns and vehicles.

“This is very important legislation for our members and our safety,” said Jeff Gross, president of the Nassau Detectives Association. “Tasers, vehicles, radios and vests are all very important for us to do our jobs. I’m hoping that somehow we can work this out.”

Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams, however, said in a statement that he agreed. But that funding was threatened

by Blakeman and Republicans, not Democrats.

“The Minority Caucus offered no fewer than a dozen times during Monday’s legislature meeting to authorize nearly $15.5 million in new borrowing for our law enforcement professionals and first responders,” he said. “Had (Blakeman) agreed to address this funding separately, we would have passed it unanimously while we negotiated a fair and complete capital plan amendment.”

Both sides did not meet immediately after the debate, but a resolution could still be on the table, Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton said, which could come in time for the legislature’s next meeting Aug. 8.

“We’re going to propose a compromise,” DeRiggi-Whitton said. “Communication and bipartisanship, that’s what we need.”

There is a new princi-“pal” in Lawrence Elementary School. Jacqueline Beckmann was appointed by the Board of Education at its July 12 meeting to succeed Rina Beach as the educational leader of the school at the district’s Broadway Campus in Lawrence.

Beckmann served as assistant principal of the elementary school for the past six years. In that time, she has developed an incentive-based attendance program, created a building emergency response plan and designed a school bus behavior plan to help ensure student safety. Beckmann partnered with Lee Araoz, the district’s coordinator of instructional technology, to develop and lead a workshop to help teachers during the implementation of Google Suite for education.

“Jacqueline Beckmann is an active participant in making Lawrence Elementary School the best it can be for our students,” Lawrence Superintendent Ann Pedersen stated in a news release. “As someone already loved by the district we are confident that she is the best candidate for this position.”

Beckmann earned her bachelor of science degree in education at St. John’s University and a master’s, also in education, from Long Island University. She also holds an advanced certificate in educational leadership from Stony Brook University. Before working in Lawrence, Beckmann worked in the New York City Department of Education for nine years, teaching first and fourth grade. Additional certifications include G-Suite for edu-

Sukkot, the Jewish holiday that commemorates the 40 years the ancient Hebrews spent in the desert after leaving Egypt and before entering Canaan, the Promised Land, was an earlier week’s theme.

In art, the campers made decorations for the sukkah, the outside shel-

ter used in the holiday’s celebration, and in cooking they made their own model sukkah, which was tasty.

There was also Disney Day and Jersey Day. The leagues and trips were happening and the campers’ projects from Ofra Jewels and Make It Too! Were amazing. Campers took part in golf clinics, gymnastics, explored God’s creations and raised money for the Camp Scholarship Fund through Hillel’s annual color run that included a DJ, live music and a dance party.

ule. Jason rushed from the car, tears in his eyes. When his coach asked him why he was late, he shrugged, “I don’t know. I never do anything right.” At that moment, something clicked for Barry. Might his blaming be affecting Jason’s selfesteem? Sure he wanted his son to be more responsible, attentive, and measure up! But he didn’t want to make his son miserable.

Still, a blame-based person doesn’t change his ways just like that.

Seeking someone to blame was in Barry’s apadin blood. It was his way of trying to keep control and make things right.

Over time, however, Barry learned to appreciate that when things go wrong, it’s not always necessary to blame someone. Sometimes the problem is just situational (more traffic than expected), organizational (the mailing was late), technological (the website was down), or human nature (people make mistakes).

It took Barry awhile before he was willing to examine the roots of his need to blame. To reflect on why control was so important to him. To remember how he felt as a kid when he was on the receiving end of the blame. Barry never did become an introspective person who loved to delve deep into his psyche. That would have required a personality transplant. But there was a mellowing process, a chilling out, a lighter, less blaming, shaming way of looking at life and all its myriad problems. The result: A less intense Barry — a happier Jason — a calmer wife. Pretty good outcome, I think. What do you think?

he cycle begins with blame.

You did something awful. How could you have done this?

Then it slides into shame. You are a stupid, stupid person. What’s the matter with you?

When something goes wrong, it’s never an accident, or a simple mistake, or a lack of judgment, or a moment of inattentiveness. It’s rarely a misdemeanor. No, it quickly becomes a felony.

Accidents don’t happen. You heard me; no accidents! Somebody has to be blamed. And the fininda ger is always pointed outwards.

Stuck in a traffic jam?

- “We wouldn’t be in this jam if you had been ready on time”.

A noisy appliance? - “If you knew how to operate it correctly, it wouldn’t be making that noise.”

A relationship issue? - “Stop all your jabbering; get to the point!”

Barry is a blame-based person, perfectionist, and type A personality. He’s one tough guy to deal with when something goes wrong. Count on being the target of his anger if you’ve anything to do with his frustration. No, he’s not the kind of guy whose anger supports the need for an order of protection.

Indeed, he has contempt for anyone who’d hit a woman or wreck a house.

He’s a responsible guy; others just need to be as responsible as he is.

For him, it’s all about judgment.

Good or bad. Right or wrong. He’s got zero tolerance for carelessness, lateness, and irresponsibility. Do what you’re supposed to do, the way it should be done, and on time. No excuses!

Can someone like Barry loosen up?

Not easily. Yet, what may start the change process is an unexpected encounter when he wonders whether he’s been too harsh or hurtful. For Barry, it began when he dropped his 8-year-old son at his soccer game.

They were late. Of course he blamed Jason for making too much noise, which “made him” misread the sched-

Holocaust survivor Werner Reich dies at 94

W

erner Reich, who survived Josef Mengele’s experiments and the Auschwitz concentration camp before making his home on Long Island, died July 8 at his Smithtown home. He was 94.

“I think people were expecting this guy who came out of the Holocaust to be mad at the world all the time,” said his son, David. “But he was actually the exact opposite.”

Instead, Werner spent his time volunteering at Glen Cove’s Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County, where he was awarded not only its Speaker of the Year, but also its Hadassah Myrtle Wreath Award for Educator of the Year.

“Werner Reich was an original in all aspects of the word,” Andrea Bolender, the center’s director, said. “He was an original founder, educator and leader of the HMTC, and Werner gave his retirement to teaching both students and adults about the dangers of intolerance and hatred of the other.”

Bolender first met Werner in 2005 when he joined the center’s board of directors. Her father, Benek Bolender, was an Auschwitz survivor himself, and she immediately discovered a connection to Werner.

“I felt that every survivor was a parent to me, and I was a child to them,” Bolender said. “He had a wicked sense of humor, and loved to cook and bake. I can still smell the scent of the Viennese crescent cookies he would bake for us when he came to speak.”

Werner Reich was born in Berlin in 1927. He was just a teenager when he taken to the Auschwitz II-Birkenau extermination camp in Poland, and later transferred to Auschwitz I. American forces liberated him and other prisoners at the camp on May 5, 1945.

A decade later, Werner had married and emigrated to the United States. He would work as an industrial engineer and corporate executive. He would spend 61 years with Eva, spending her final taking care of her before she died in 2016.

Although he lived through the worst atrocities of World War II, Werner didn’t actually begin speaking about what happened until the late 1990s, after the birth of his first grandchild. For him, it was important when this new life came into the world to get his message out. So, Werner started sharing his Holocaust experience, all in the hopes of preventing history from ever repeating itself.

He talked to audiences not only on Long Island, but around the world. Werner spoke as often as 10 times a week — and roughly 100 times a year — at middle schools, high schools, colleges and festivals.

He traveled to England, Germany, Israel, Portugal and China.

“He did more traveling between the ages of 90 and 94 then I’ve done in my lifetime,” said his daughter-in-law,

WERNER REIcH, WHo spent more than a year at Auschwitz before coming to America and raising his family, died July 8. He was 94.

Yes, he told everybody about the horrors and the atrocities of the Holocaust. But he had an overriding message of being nice to people, being good and anti-bullying.”

Those who knew Werner say he had a great sense of humor, and always felt that a bad situation could be made better by being happy instead of sad.

“He always tried to look on the bright side,” Andrea said. “We would ask him, ‘How can you always be so positive, because of all the horrible things that have happened to you in life?’ He said that he’d been blessed because he sur-

vived, he met his wife — with whom he was in love and raised a family — and had very good grandchildren.”

An avid cook, Werner had a taste for European cuisine and loved experimenting. He made schnitzel, goulash, apple strudel, and his family’s favorite, potato pancakes.

“He could meet somebody at the supermarket and start chatting with them, and the next minute they’re in his kitchen and he’s showing them how to cook a special dish,” Andrea said.

Besides Andrea, Werner is survived by his sons David and Mikal, four grandchildren — Ben, Brooke, Violet and Olive — niece Karen Ziegler, and nephew Robert Romano.

He was a member of the Internation-

al Brotherhood of Magicians and the Psychic Entertainers Association, and he continued to practice magic tricks throughout his life after learning his first trick in a concentration camp.

“They’ll remember him as a very fine, loving man,” David, his son, said. “A very welcoming person, and a very positive person. When people would first meet him, they felt like they were his best friend.”

“Even though he went through a lot of adversity — and it was definitely a horrible experience — he managed to make a very positive happy experience,” Andrea added. “His message, we hope, will resonate forever: You can’t forget the atrocities, but something good could come out of it.”

Guns, bail reform, dominate congressional race Democrats scramble to see who will face D’Esposito

As midterms approach with political control of both the U.S. House and U.S. Senate up for grabs, candidates vying for the newly drawn 4th Congressional District are entering the final weeks before the Aug. 23 primary.

All but Anthony D’Esposito, that is, who has already locked up the Republican nomination, awaiting to see who will challenge him from the Democratic side in November. And he’s all but certain one hot-button political issue will be on the table: guns.

It’s not that the Town of Hempstead councilman doesn’t believe there is a problem with gun violence. To him, it’s simply a lack of enforcement against those with illegal firearms. And D’Esposito says he knows that based on a former partnership between New York City officials and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives known as “Trigger Lock.”

Through that program, criminals knew they’d be sent to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for prosecution rather than a more local court.

“It changes the feeling on the streets, so to speak, for those that are toting illegal guns,” D’Esposito said.

But controlling gun violence means controlling access to guns and the ammunition they fire, said former Town of Hempstead supervisor Laura Gillen, one of five candidates seeking the district’s Democratic nomination.

In fact, she says, federal law already prevents hunting migratory gamebirds with more than three shotgun shells, for example.

“Federal law does more to protect ducks than it does to protect children,” Gillen said.

Gillen and D’Esposito have already raised more than $1.1 million for their campaigns between them. Keith Corbett, Malverne’s mayor, is working to keep pace with a war chest of more than $400,000 of his own. And while he is concerned about the flow of illegal firearms like D’Esposito, he also believes red flag laws intended to weed out people who are a threat to themselves or others

from buying guns could be effective if databases were streamlined through federal agencies.

The last thing Corbett wants, he said, is another Uvalde, where 19 students and two teachers were shot and killed in a Texas school last May. As mayor, he’s already installed more than 350 cameras throughout the Malverne school district, which are monitored by the police department.

“We have access and auto locks to everything,” Corbett said. “We can see where they are. We can isolate.”

D’Esposito, however, fears many of the solutions Democrats are offering to combat gun violence will just fall short, saying many of these ideas have already been tested, like where he used to work in Brooklyn.

“There are good people that live there,” he said. “Democrats said over and over again that they were doing this to protect minority communities.”

Yet, those same communities “are the ones that have been affected the most” by bail reform, he added. Supporters back bail reform as they say staying locked up should be based on someone’s threat to the community, not how much money they have. Critics like D’Esposito say it’s letting too many people back on the streets to commit more crime.

Corbett believes bail reform could be good, but the problem “is the way they wrote those laws” — leaving too much room for interpretation in determining what constitutes a violent felony.

Gillen, who doesn’t support bail reform, finds value in community outreach programs.

“I think any time we have police officers engaging in a community and developing relationships within the community, it’s a great thing,” Gillen said. “The police can be used as role models and educators for our children.”

While there might not be a lot the three agree on, something that has seemed to unite them is the belief many politicians are out of touch with their local communities. Like U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, said to be on the far-left side of the Democratic Party.

“We need to have people in Washington who are not like AOC,” D’Esposito said, “who are not like these ‘defund the police’ who have a voice and are able to speak up.”

Corbett says politics has become too much about personalities, and not about substance of what communities want.

“It’s about time we play that system for us, for me, for you, for your families, for the normal people,” Corbett said, adding he is “fed up and tired of sitting here and watching this mess of partisanship.”

Although D’Esposito won’t have to look for votes until the general election Nov. 8, Gillen and Corbett are not only battling each other for the Democratic nomination on Aug. 23, but also Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages, Muzib Huq and Kevin Bryan Shakil.

While expectations are high that Republicans will take over Congress after the midterms, Gillen says she believes she can still be effective as a Democrat — especially as someone who has worked closely with Republicans in the past to get things done.

“That’s what we need in Washington,” she said. “Not political hacks, and not people who have allegiances and who are beholden to political party bosses.”

still have just as many people here today, because these are our rights. These are the rights of Americans — of all Americans, women and men.”

State Sen. Kevin Thomas called out the Supreme Court justices ruling against abortion, assuring attendees he and other state politicians would continue to stand with women.

“With the overturning of Roe, it is obvious that these radical justices are willing to cross any line to push their unpopular, conservative agenda that goes against the will of the American people,” he said. “But let me be clear: In New York, nothing has changed. Nothing will change.”

That’s the message Gov. Kathy Hochul shared after the Supreme Court ruling, but her Republican challenger — U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin — is pushing to restrict abortion access in New York, although his victory in Novem-

ber would need to carry a number of Republicans to the legislature, where Democrats currently hold a supermajority.

“I think the Democrats in New York are going to try to find ways to go further,” Zeldin said last May, according to published reports. “You cannot go much further than they have gone already. I mean, they have legalized lateterm partial birth abortions, and non-doctors performing abortions.”

State Sen. Anna Kaplan told the crowd at the courthouse that an attack on women’s rights anywhere is an attack on women’s rights everywhere.

“We are here with a simple message today: We will not back down,” Kaplan said. ”These extremists think they can put up barriers between women and reproductive health care. We are going to tear them down.”

Just weeks after someone tried to chain the doors of a Planned Parenthood facility in Hempstead, dozens gathered outside the Nassau County Courthouse in Mineola last week to support abortion rights and women’s access to health care.

Organized by members of the Planned Parenthood Hempstead Health Center to protest what happened at its Fulton Avenue facility July 7, the rally also was intended as a response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturn of Roe v. Wade last month.

“When the court made that awful decision, it eroded the rights of 36 million women across the country who can become pregnant, and ultimately those individuals are no longer able to make decisions about their own bodies, lives and futures,” said Jackie Marrero, a communications and marketing vice president for Planned Parenthood of Greater New York.

“When it comes to a person’s bodily autonomy, the only decision that matters should be their own.”

Among those trekking to the courthouse last week was Hofstra University student Jessica Landau.

“Even though in New York we still have the legal right to get an abortion, I know there are people who oppose it in our state and across the country,” she said. “So, we wanted to show up and let people know that they have our support, and that kind of negative attitude isn’t tolerated around here.”

Assemblyman Chuck Lavine told the gathering he and his political allies would always support abortion rights, and didn’t fail to note who didn’t show up to the rally.

“I think it speaks volumes — and this is no compliment — that we do not have one Republican elected official here,” Lavine said.

“I think that even if was hotter than it already is, we’d

The Chabad, led by Rabbi Eli Goodman, plans to build a community center on the property not only for the Jewish community, but for all residents, Goodman said.

Goodman has previously claimed that he sensed antisemitism and discrimination in the eminent domain action. He noted that the village had not made an offer to buy the land.

“Well, I’m hoping that the courts can see there is unclean hands of the village’s action here,” said lifelong Atlantic Beach resident Richard Libbey, whose family business, M.A. Salazar, had owned the property at 2035 Park St. since 1938.

Until the land title officially passes to a new owner, the parcel remains under the ownership of the previous one. “We’re tied into their deal, sort of,” Libbey said, “even though we’re not, because the village is taking both properties.”

Libbey said he believed that there are better locations, which the village already owns, that can be used for lifeguard operations and parks. “It shows that there’s some other agenda going on that they don’t want to really state out loud …,” he said “Why does the village need another place that they can’t maintain? Who’s going to maintain their community center — they’re going to hire another two

Though the village originally intended to turn part of the village hall into a community center, it never did, Libbey said.

But now that “the Chabad wanted to build the community center at no cost to the village,” he added, “the village said, no, we’re going to build it, and we’re going to take your land.”

Greg Gordon, senior director of public relations at ZE Creative Communications, emailed an official statement from the vil-

lage board of trustees last week.

“The Village of Atlantic Beach began the process to acquire the 2025 and 2035 Park Street properties in November of 2020, a year prior to the Chabad Lubavitch of the Beaches, Inc. purchasing the property,” the statement read. “The Village engaged with both an attorney as well as a real estate appraiser at that time. These properties were identified because they are uniquely adjacent to existing Village assets and allow for the opportunity to

build a year-round recreational facility as well as create additional park land for all residents of Atlantic Beach to enjoy.

“The eminent domain process exists to ensure the owners of these properties receive fair market value for them,” the statement continued, “We do not pursue a process of this nature lightly. We do believe the benefits these two properties will provide our community are too great to ignore, offering the opportunity to greatly enhance the quality of the village’s recreational and park land assets.

Our actions have never and will never be based on any bias or motives other than doing what is best for our beloved community and its residents today and for future generations of Atlantic Beach homeowners.”

Libbey said that an Atlantic Beach property measuring 10,000 square feet recently sold for $1.9 million. The plots the Chabad bought are nearly twice that size, so, Libbey reasoned, the fair market value of the land could be at least double what the Long Beach congregation paid for the land eight months ago.

Many Atlantic Beach residents voiced their opposition to the village’s action at a Jan. 10 public hearing. The public comment period ended on Jan. 24.

ast meets West at the Heckscher Museum of Art’s new exhibit, “Global Asias: Contemporary Asian and Asian American Art from the Collection of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation,” on view through Sept. 18. It’s a concentrated yet all-encompassing look at the creative approach of 15 artists of Asian heritage.

Visitors are drawn into the cosmopolitan, exuberant, and subtly subversive works of these artists who are adept at crossing borders — not only physical ones, but also those in media, styles, genre, and materials. From reconstructions of traditional Asian art to experimentation with new concepts and media, the exhibit challenges and engages any preconceived notions of what defines Asian art.

“The artists included in this exhibition open our eyes to what it is like to cross boundaries both real and cultural,” says collector Jordan Schnitzer, whose family has a longstanding history of championing Asian art and culture. “I hope each viewer is as moved as I am by this exhibit and is challenged and inspired by the art.”

The 45 works are grouped into three themes.

“Exuberant Forms” features works that reshape and challenge conventional views of abstract art by exploring new materials, techniques, and metaphors. Kwang Young Chun, for example, exploits the texture of handmade papers in his somber monochromes,

while Jacob Hashimoto mimics the effect of collage in his tour-de-force prints. Jun Kaneko “flattens” traditional raku ware into explosive two-dimensionality. Also Hiroki Morinoue and Barbara Takenaga create intricate geometric patterns to evoke natural formations.

“Moving Stories” brings together powerful pieces that reflect on the experiences of migration, both within Asia and beyond. Dinh Q. Lê) appropriates and masks iconic images of the Vietnam War. Woodmere house fire injures three firefighters Three volunteer firefighters were injured as five fire departments joined forces to extinguish a fire at a vacant house at 227 Mosher Ave., in Woodmere on July 25.

The Nassau County Arson Bomb Squad said the blaze occurred at 4:15 p.m., and flames engulfed the home. Woodmere, Hewlett, Inwood, Lawrence-Cedarhurst and Valley Stream fire departments

responded to the scene. The injured firefighters were taken to local hospitals for treatment, police said.

As of press time, the county fire marshal deemed the fire non-suspicious. The investigation is continuing.

The tub: indoors or out?

Q. I didn’t think designing bathrooms would be difficult, but we are trying to decide if we should have a Jacuzzi tub and shower in our master bath or forgo the tub and put a hot tub on our deck instead. We generally don’t use a bathtub, except for when our grandkids are over, but some friends say it adds value to the house, and that most people want them. Is that true? I would rather have a separate toilet room than a tub, but my wife wants the tub, even though I know she won’t use it. Any thoughts?

A. I remember rolling my eyes in my third-year architecture class when the question was posed, “What is a home?” We went room by room, listing the uses, activities and needs on a chart, and then creating a diagram relating the room shapes and how they’re connected. I realized that I’d never thought about it that way before. onte eeper The great bathroom debate over tubs versus hot tubs is very common, and just like any design decision, requires an important thought process. Think of your need versus desire. Because a tub takes up a considerable amount of floor space, you have to really want the vessel. Alternatively, consider the hot tub, which is more portable and removable, takes up no interior space, unless you install it inside, and can be used with friends that you might not have in your bathroom to socially soak. In other words, do you want the personal value of soaking in the privacy of the bathroom or the seasonal social soaking with others, whether family or friends, outdoors?

A hot tub, outside, is handled by municipalities the same as a pool, in-ground or above ground, because a fearless and unaware small child can lift the cover and possibly drown. Outdoors, the hot tub triggers the need (code requirement with a building permit) for fencing and gates around it, although some communities accept a locking cover, floating alarm and door alarms (for when the door has been opened to the hot tub area). I constantly murmur that nothing is simple, and the decision about an indoor versus an outdoor tub is proof.

Most people honestly tell me they don’t have the time or inclination to soak in a tub in their master bathroom (which now, due to political correctness, I hear, is called the “primary suite”). Recently, a client who insisted on a whirlpool tub in their bath called to tell me that after all our discussion and expense, it takes up to 45 minutes to fill the tub, and they had to have a higher-volume water heater so as to not run out of water, after turning down a tankless instant hot water system. They used the expression “Live and learn,” so I hope you avoid the disappointment of making the wrong decision.

Write down your needs versus wants. Decide what you want, not what a future buyer wants.

he late President Harry Truman had a sign on his desk whose words have haunted every president who has followed him. It simply said, “The buck stops here.” The Oval Office is the place where the president is held accountable, and Presidents Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump and Biden have taken quite a beating over the years.

The dynasty of the two Bushes was marked by a bad economy and a couple of questionable wars.

Operation Desert Storm was followed by the Iraq War. Pappa Bush, JERRY George H.W., had the most governKREMER ment experience and deserved a pat on the back for some good things, but the economy tanked and he tanked with it. The second Bush, George W., was plagued with bad advisers who destroyed his credibility.

Many of the Democrats and Republicans that I know agree that Bill Clinton was a good president. He restored the American economy and passed welfare reform. He kept us out of wars and left

the nation with a balanced budget and a healthy surplus. But the Monica Lewinsky story has haunted him to this day, and any Clinton obituary will make frequent reference to that tangled relationship.

Barack Obama swept into office on a tide of support from voters in both parties. His speeches were eloquent, and voters lined up to hear him wherever he went. He was determined to pass a health care program that would attract universal support, and succeeded in getting his dream plan passed with the help of a hard push by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Obama’s image was hurt by the losses his party took in midterm congressional elections, and even though the Obama health care plan is now applauded, it didn’t help him at a time when he needed public support.

Donald Trump may have been successful in business, but those skills didn’t help him in the White House. He rarely followed the protocols that presidents must follow to survive, and he treated the government like his personal toy. He spent too much time tweeting, and sur-

rounded himself with bad people who contributed to his downfall. He has the distinction of being the only president to be impeached twice.

The Jan. 6 congressional committee is revealing more missteps that may haunt him in the months and years ahead.

President Biden is an enigma. If there were such a thing as two presidents, one for foreign relations and one for domestic affairs, he would be considered one of the best foreign relations presidents. He has awakened the NATO alliance from its slumber and has united it in ways that no one could have expected.

He has taken the lead on the Ukraine war, and without his leadership, it would have ended with a quick Russian victory.

On the domestic front, however, Biden’s tenure has been a disaster. Many of the headaches that have landed on his desk are not of his making or his fault.

Inflation is a combination of issues he hasn’t solved and some headaches that he didn’t create.

Of all the bad breaks he has gotten, his biggest one is the Democratic Congress. Like the gang who couldn’t shoot straight, the leaders of the majority can’t get their act together. The one or two bills that the Democrats could have pushed through the Senate are dying, thanks to the antics of Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who is a one-man wrecking crew. There are three precious months left for the Democrats to score some political points, but in the meantime, Biden gets the blame.

The last force that destroys the reputation of any president is the media. Nothing a president does seems to satisfy them. They will pick on the smallest missteps and blow them up into “breaking news.” I have my own personal likes and dislikes when it comes to presidents, but I must concede that they have the most thankless job in the nation, and will never avoid public unhappiness.

This summer’s recommended reads, none too long

M

ost of us learned to read a long time ago, but many of us are learning to read all over again through the fog of

Covid.

I sometimes wonder if I’m the only one feeling this way, but I suppose everyone, at some point during the pandemic, has found it difficult to focus on reading for pleasure. In my other gig I conduct book groups, where we talk about literary fiction and nonfiction. My “bookies” tell me they have been finding RAnDi it difficult to conKREiss centrate. They tell me they read the same paragraph repeatedly before it sinks in. They say nothing holds their fractured attention.

I have had the same experience over the last two-plus years. Therefore, it was challenging to find eight books for my upcoming winter groups. I want to share the list with anyone who is up for a good read. My message is, forgive yourself if you can’t plow through books the way you once did. When Covid becomes less of a threat, our minds will refocus, our attention span will expand and reading

will once again become the joy it has always been. In the meantime, let’s go at our own pace. But let’s go.

We need to talk. And we need to talk about books. After isolation, polarization and not nearly enough conversation, reading important writers feels exactly right. Good books ground us, and give us wings.

Talking about literature, as we wind our way through these interesting times, feels like a privilege, and a joy. The books I have chosen, anchored in other times and places, connect us with complex characters whose lives resonate with our own.

One caveat: My grouping is odd. I rarely select “book group” books. I look for unique pieces, slightly out of the mainstream. For this year, I chose books that offer escape from the here and now because, Lord knows, we need to escape.

And I looked for books that also offer comfort. The comfort comes not from reading “happy” books, but from witnessing the affirmation of life in other times and places.

Another pandemic concession is that the books are all relatively short, under 300 pages.

The first is “Lila,” by Marilynne Robinson. Robinson tells the story of a young girl, abandoned as a child, who finds love and grace in this world in the best way she can. It is the writing, of course, that makes this story so moving.

“The Glass Hotel,” by Emily St. John Mandel, is a world away from “Station Eleven,” Mandel’s awardwinning novel about the earth after an apocalyptic event that wipes out most of humanity. Oddly, it wasn’t an entirely depressing book, but I wasn’t going there. “The Glass Hotel” tells the story of someone finding herself living an implausible life in an extraordinary time. The writing is gorgeous.

“The All of It,” by Jeannette Haien, is a gem in every respect, small, dense and stunningly beautiful. The story takes place in Ireland and introduces us to a couple bound by secrets that unravel as we turn the pages.

“Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead,” by Olga Tokarczuk, is a unique read. Tokarczuk won the Nobel Prize for literature, the book is translated from the Polish, and I didn’t completely understand it all, but I loved the journey.

“The Sea,” by John Banville, according to The New York Times, is a “luminous novel about, love, loss and the unpredictable power of memory.” Like several other selections, it takes place in Great Britain. I am not entirely sure why I traveled across the pond for so many of my book choices, but it feels right; the settings are far enough away to buffer us as we are pummeled by the same life-and-death issues here at home.

“The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,” by Muriel Spark, is set in Edinburgh, Scotland, in the 1930s. A classic novel, based on Spark’s own experience teaching at a girls’ school, stands the test of time, perhaps because memory, love and betrayal are timeless themes.

“The Vanishing Half,” by Brit Bennett, breaks my own rule: It was a New York Times bestseller and wildly popular. It speaks to the experience of Black women in America.

Finally, “The Fortnight in September,” by R. C. Sherriff, is a richly layered story about a family of good people on a fortnight’s vacation when nothing — and everything — happens. A beautiful read.

I offer these books with respect. Take what you will. Read what holds your head and your heart.

A slippery slope threatens the First Amendment

lyers were left on the doorsteps of homes in Rockville Centre and Oceanside last week, filled with vile hate claiming, among other things, that President Biden was in league with a “Jewish cabal,” perpetuating the overused trope that Jews control the country.

It was repugnant. It was disgusting.

Every one of us should condemn what was found on those pamphlets, but at the same time we must take caution not to entertain thoughts about outright banning them.

It’s an unfortunate side effect of the First Amendment, but an important one all the same. That freedom of expression protects all speech from government censorship — including “the thought that we hate,” as iconic U.S. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. once said.

It’s a right that protects us not from one another, but from the government, without fear of interference, censorship or restraint. It doesn’t protect speech we might agree with — if we agreed with it, there would be no need to write laws protecting it. Instead, the First Amendment is designed to protect speech we don’t agree with.

letters Rescind Pearsall Project approval To the Editor: All Five Towners have been made less safe by the Village of Cedarhurst’s approval of the construction of 98 new apartments in three buildings on Pearsall Avenue, near Rockaway Turnpike.

Rockaway Turnpike, an arterial road, is already a clogged artery. An artery that has frequently been totally blocked by traffic, uneven traffic signals, accidents, rerouting and weather conditions.

The addition of more cars, trucks and school buses will further clog it. There is no stenting that will cure the blockage.

Cedarhurst was required to, among other things, commission and review a traffic impact study before approvals.

The study was conducted over a seven-hour period on two days in March 2020. It is my opinion that the study is severely flawed, and likely was predetermined to fit a desired result by the developer and the village.

The conclusion was essentially that adding 200 cars would have no effect on

we, as a collective, can’t object to it.

When we start talking about criminal prosecution, however, we need to be wary of creating barriers that would keep people from expressing themselves.

Sure, in this case, we would be curbing something we can universally agree needs to be squelched — those antisemitic flyers — and it’s completely understandable why our elected leaders would consider it. But at the same time, we risk setting a precedent that could silence other speech — especially speech we may agree with.

And that’s why it’s important to speak out against hate speech — to call it out for what it is — but not to demand that our government put an end to it.

“Our history shows the same First Amendment that protects hateful, racist speech can be — and has been — used by civil rights advocates to protect historically vulnerable communities,” said Lee Rowland, a senior staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union.

Rowland points to a case in the 1960s in which the U.S. Supreme Court sided with an avowed KKK member who talked about ridding the world of Jews and Black people. So long as there was not an immediate and specific risk of actual violence to a real person, his words were

protected by the First Amendment.

It was certainly enough to make most of us want to rethink the Bill of Rights.

That is, until a few years later, when civil rights leader Charles Evers called for a boycott of racist, white-owned businesses, promising to “break the damn neck” of anyone who crossed that boycott line.

Those businesses sued Evers and the NAACP, claiming incitement. But the Supreme Court, harking back to the case with the KKK member, ruled in Evers’s favor.

We look with disgust at courts protecting speech we feel has no place in society, but because of those rulings — because of the First Amendment — we have the ability to speak up and condemn such speech, and call it what it is. It’s a freedom so few other countries have, and the cost is that, yes, speech we don’t like — speech we may despise — is protected.

The flyers distributed to our neighbors in Rockville Centre and Oceanside were clearly antisemitic. We should find out who did it. Call them out. Explain why those hateful words were clearly hateful. But we also must tread carefully when it comes to finding criminal solutions. That’s one slippery slope we must avoid, because the next speech that could be censored could be your own.

robably no depiction of sharks has so demonized these creatures as the movie “Jaws,” directed by Steven Spielberg, whose threatening music by composer John Williams further heightened the fear of pending seaborne doom.

So the latest round of shark bites inflicted on Long Island bathers has played to the stereotype as predictably as a screenwriter’s script. It even moved George Gorman, regional director of the New York state parks system, to invoke a RONALD J. character from movie. He ROSENBERG that recently told a reporter that he didn’t want to sound like the mayor of Amity, the fictional seaside community in “Jaws,” who dismissed the deadly threat from a massive white shark prowling the ocean, but Gorman reminded us that sharks are looking for schools of fish to feed on, not human entrees.

Of course, shark attacks are real and, on occasion, catastrophic. When a Japanese submarine sank the cruiser USS Indianapolis in the closing days of World War II, the hundreds of survivors in the

water were decimated by sharks.

Over the generations of seafaring, legends have grown about shark attacks, dramatized by artists of the era. As early as 1778, a painting depicted the rescue of an English boy who lost a leg in a shark attack in Havana harbor.

Multiple copies now hang in various museums.

At the turn of the 19th century, a classic Winslow Homer painting depicted a lone sailor bravely considering his shipwrecked predicament as a shark patiently circles his damaged vessel while a storm looms in the distance.

One suspects there is something in our DNA that makes us fear the idea of a shark attack. Humans may have come from the sea epochs ago, but it is certainly not our home, and as intruders there we have reason to be wary. The sharks lurking in the depths only add to that tension. And the idea of being a predator’s chum is among our most disturbing nightmares.

Marine scientists have offered any number of reasons for sharks to discover Long Island’s South Shore this year.

Some say it’s the climate. Others maintain that a cleaner marine environment is bringing them closer to shore in their hunt for prey. One researcher at Ocearch,

The elements required for a satisfactory and valid traffic impact study are 1) crash history, 2) expected nearby developments, 3) proposed developments and 4) expected traffic growth.

The study did not include the very important required crash history and expected nearby developments, such as the large Amazon warehouse and the nearby, not yet opened yeshiva.

And there was an assumption, without any basis, that school buses, parents driving their children to school and support staff vehicles would have no effect on Rockaway Turnpike congestion.

The yeshiva is a large, beautiful building on Mott Avenue, right off Rockaway Turnpike, and free access must be assured for the safety of our children.

Additionally, West Broadway is undergoing a major overhaul that will limit access.

That work is slated to last over a year. There is also no mention at all that Rockaway Turnpike is a flood evacuation route for a part of the Five Towns.

I would say that the Village of

Now, for the first time, state, county and town authorities are using high technology, deploying drones to spot the predators just under the surface. They bring to mind American long-range patrol planes hunting down German U-boats in the Atlantic in World War II. Now Gov. Kathy Hochul says she is beefing up additional patrols.

No one is minimizing the potential for shark injuries this summer, but officials are also looking to prevent panic.

There is a considerable difference between a nasty flesh wound and a great white chomping through a charter boat out of Captree.

A keen lookout by lifeguards, common-sense precautions by bathers and a respect for the habits of sharks driven by instinct are all part of the rational response to a Long Island shift in shark migration.

There is also an economic consideration to our understanding of an uptick in shark attacks. Extensive tabloid coverage can distort the perception of our

Past surveys of European travel agents revealed that far too many thought of Long Island as riddled with crime in the wake of gruesome MS-13 gang killings. The findings were stunning. We may have endured individual criminal cases that sparked headlines, but Long Island has never warranted that level of global notoriety.

The same applies to the perception of shark danger, and its effect on beach attendance. One statistic indicates that outdoor recreation accounts for 28 percent of visitors to Long Island. There are an estimated 1.01 million day visitors to the island each year and some 4.1 million overnighters. All of this equates to millions of dollars for the Long Island economy.

Sharks will continue to be demonized because of our fear of what lies in the deep, but, in the end, we Long Islanders are an entrepreneurial lot. Whether our restaurants start to serve really fresh mako or we host shark-spotting charters, expect some of us to profit from the new patterns of shark migration. But not a single dime should go to Spielberg.
