Land conflict goes to court Atlantic Beach eminent domain claim to be heard July 14 By JEFFREY BEssEN jbessen@liherald.com
Two vacant Atlantic Beach parcels are the focus of a legal battle between the village and the Chabad of the Beaches, as the Jewish congregation in Long Beach fights the municipality’s petition to take over the land through eminent domain. The Long Beach Chabad bought both properties, which have been vacant for over two years, last November for $950,000 from M.A. Salazar Inc., a real estate company. Saint Marina to be paraded through Inwood on Saturday
Feast honors patron saint of small Italian town By lisa MaRGaRia lmargaria@liherald.com
The Santa Marina Society of Inwood’s Santa Marina Feast is back this summer for the first time in three years. The Feast, set for July 15 and 16, will feature amusement park rides, games, music, a live auction, food and more in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church’s parking lot on Wanser Avenue in Inwood. The society is a religious organization established in 1921 by Italian immigrants from Filandari, a small town in the Calabria region
of Italy, dedicated to honoring Santa Marina, or Saint Marina Vergine, Filandari’s patron saint. “It’s the patron saint of where we come from,” society Treasurer and Secretary Giovanni Curra said. “All these towns in Italy have a patron saint in each church.” Santa Marina has been celebrated annually for a century in Inwood with the Santa Marina Feast. “It’s a carnival Friday and Saturday night with Italian food, games, rides,” Curra said. “On the Saturday of the Feast, we do a big religious Mass — church Mass — at Our Continued on page 13
plans to build a community center and a recreational facility, which would also house beach lifeguard operations. If the village’s eminent domain petition succeeds, Parcel Two, at 2035 Park, would be used as a community park, with open space, seating and landscaping. The two properties total 18,500 square feet, and are adjacent to an existing village recreational facility that includes tennis and pickleball courts and a basketball court. “Don’t yet know what our plans are,” Goodman said, “We RikoN were startled by (the court action). It was not done in a friendly way, and there is more behind it than a land grab.” Goodman has previously claimed that he sensed antisemitism and discrimination in the eminent domain action. He noted that no offer had been made by the village to buy the land. Many Atlantic Beach residents voiced their adamant opposition to the village’s action
o alternative locations were considered for the project.
