Woodmere native Lyss Stern and her DivaMoms business partner, Wendy Siegel, created an escape for mothers called Moms Time Out, a retreat that gives them the chance to get away from their daily parental responsibilities for a weekend and refresh their mental health.

In July 2020, Stern took her daughter, now 8, to Camp Tyler Hill in Tyler Hill, Pennsylvania — owned by Siegel and her husband, Andy — where Stern spent her summers growing up. When she arrived, Stern said, she had an “aha moment.”

At the time, people were feeling the stress and fear of the unknown as the coronavirus pandemic ramped up. A national survey in the

Journal of Women’s Health, published in 2021, found “alarmingly high rates of mental health problems” in women early in the pandemic.

“I said to Wendy, we just need a weekend up here alone — just the moms,” Stern recalled.

“Like, I need a mom timeout. Can we make something happen?”

“I just was like, there’s no way you’re going to get moms to break away from their families for a weekend — it’ll never happen,” Siegel recounted. “Lyss kept saying, ‘If we build it, they will come.’ We kind of put our heads together, and she convinced me, and we created a really cool itinerary for moms.”

Though that itinerary has grown since the first retreat in September 2020, Moms Time Out consists of yoga, meditation, acupuncture, Continued on page 13

Hewlett Harbor native was ‘a force of nature’

When her 13-year-old son Michael was stricken with colitis, Shelby Modell did not curl up in a ball and cry. She quickly turned her sorrow into action and was the co-founder of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America and founder of the Long Island chapter for the nonprofit advocacy organization.

“She was a force of nature, she wouldn’t accept no and she was all about family,” said son Mitch Modell, who recalled that it was his mother that attended all of his and Michael’s Little League games when their father, William, was busy with the family’s business, the Modell’s sporting goods store franchise.

Shelby Modell died on May 12, 2022.

The Hewlett Harbor native was 98.

The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America was just one of Shelby’s many philanthropic endeavors. She was also a founding member of the American Digestive Disease Society, the Jeffrey Modell Foundation for immunological research, the Gilda Radner Foundation, “Gilda’s Club,” and Hewlett House, the home of the 1 in 9: The Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition. Shelby served a secre-

tary and on the Radner Foundation board.

“Shelby Modell and I working together on the founding of Hewlett House, which was one of the many philanthropic endeavors she and her husband, Bill, were involved in,” said Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. “She was a classy lady and a dear friend and she’ll be sorely missed.”

Born on May 3, 1924, she grew up in Brooklyn.

Her parents were Abe and Anna Zaldin. An educated woman, Shelby earned a bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College and a Shelby master’s from Columbia University.

On vacation at Glenmere Mansion in upstate Chester, Shelby fell into Glenmere Lake and was drowning. William came to her rescue and that ignited a romance. Married in 1949, the couple was married for 59 years until William, known as Bill to many, died in 2008 at 86.

Michael died in 2001.

“She was dedicated to be great wife, a

great mother, a great grandmother and dedicated in life to helping people,” Mitch said, noting that all his and brother’s friends came to their house as his mother “put out the best fruits, the best snacks, the best sandwiches.”

Shelby was president of the Long Island League of the Metropolitan Geriatric Center; chairwoman of the Five Towns Development Fund for Lincoln Center and was a founding patron of the Metropolitan Opera. She was also a founding member of the Seawane Club.

“She was the most amazing person you’d ever want to me,” said Hewlett Modell resident Sandy Kahn, who knew Shelby more than 50 years. “We’d play cards together, had dinner together. I can’t say enough good things about her.”

Active in politics as well as philanthropy, President Jimmy Carter appointed Shelby to the U.S. Panama Canal Treaty negotiating committee in 1977, and two years later New York City Mayor Abe Beame appointed her a commissioner on

the city’s Youth Board. In 1987, Gov. Mario Cuomo appointed Shelby to the New York State Council of the Arts.

She also served on the prestigious National Health Council of Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and led the drive that raised $150 million to build the medical center’s new psychiatric center.

Shelby was recognized with a special Presidential Commendation for her work in promoting mental health research.

“People tell me your mother saved by friend’s life, family,” Mitch said in regard to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, saying she had a little black book with doctors names nationwide.

She is survived by her sister, Claire Kaufman; Shelby’s children Leslie, Abby and Mitchell; and grandchildren Shawn, Alexa and Gila, Missy, Andrew, Ashley and David, Brittany and Jeremy, Ashley Maxwell, Matthew; and nieces Judy Boslow, Mindy Boslow, Lisa Boslow and great-grandchild Myka.

A private service was held Tuesday at Riverside Memorial Chapel in Manhattan. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America Research Fund in Shelby’s memory.

Lawrence High School art teacher Beth Goldtstein, the students created images and wrote upbeat messages as a way of giving back to the community.

“Aliesa came to me and said she wanted to do a mural for the teen center, so we kinda collaborated together,” Lichtenstein said. “We sat down and we came up with an idea and I sketched it out and it kinda came together that way.”

Applying his 19 years of experience with Glenn’s 28 years, the duo partnered on the idea that coalesced during the coronavirus pandemic and due to her husband, James, being a Community Center board member. He also works as a custodian for the Lawrence School District.

“When everything was closed down we were coming in we were repainting walls in the different offices and cleaning the rooms just to keep us busy and we had the opportunity to give back to the community,” Aliesa said. “So when we reopened this was one of the rooms that we painted and cleaned up and we mentioned how about a mural and I said

wouldn’t it be better if the kids did it.”

Lawrence Middle School eighth-grader Gabrielle Serrano was one of the several students who was coloring the mural, she said it’s “really fun.” “I was ion my art class and Mr. Lichtenstein, my teacher, he likes the art that I do. He told me to come over and here I am.”

Lichenstein said his goal was to get the community involved in the project and create what he called a “bridge” for the kids and the community to help understand the Community Center’s uniqueness. “I thought it would be nice to get the kids to understand what the Community Center’s about and why it’s so special,” he said. It really like safe haven for a lot of these kids.”

The teen center includes televisions that function as game monitors with couches, there are two pool tables, foosball, ping pong, tables chairs, a microwave and mini fridge. “Let’s get the kids involved, it’s their room,” Aliesa said was the impetus behind doing the mural. “Instead of being on the street getting into trouble you can be here and hangout with your friends.”

Hewlett resident Keith Pooler was convicted of murder on May 13, after fatally stabbing a man in June 2020.

Pooler, 56, and the victim, Andre Garry, 49, argued at the intersection of Terrace and Fulton Avenue in Hempstead, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly stated in a news release.

As the argument continued, Pooler pulled out a 5-inch steak knife and stabbed Garry in the heart. Garry collapsed and was taken to NYU Langone Hospital in Mineola where he was pronounced dead.

“Keith Pooler escalated a petty dispute into a deadly encounter, which ended with the defendant plunging a knife into Andre Garry’s chest,” Donnelly said in the release. “We are pleased with the

jury’s verdict, and that the defendant will be held accountable for his decision to take a like that day.”

Pooler fled the scene, dropping the knife that was then found near the incident scene by police nearly 20 minutes later. Nassau County police arrested Pooler in Hewlett in July of 2020.

The eight-day trial, before Judge Howard Sturim, began on May 5. The jury deliberated for less than a day before delivering the guilty verdict.

Convicted of second-degree murder, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, Pooler will be sentenced on July.

28. He faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

Hewlett man convicted of 2020 murder in Hempstead

Multiple gunshots in the area of Bayview and Walcott avenues in Inwood at 12:30 a.m., on May 16 drew the attention of two officers from the Nassau County Police Department’s Bureau of Special Operation conducting crime prevention enforcement in the Five Towns.

Police said that the Crime Scene Unit recovered 18 shell casings and three bullet fragments from the scene. The subsequent investig ation uncovered a description of people allegedly involved in the shooting.

A brief time later, the police saw two men and a woman in Terrace Garden Park on St. George Place, also in Inwood. Two of the three people matched the descriptions, police said.

Then Satoya L. Mccoy, 31, of Redfern Avenue, in Far Rockaway, was seen throwing a black and silver Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun on the ground, according to police. They added that the gun had a 16-round, high capacity magazine inserted into it. The gun had been reported stolen by the Plymouth Police Department in North Carolina.

Rashawn R. Williams, 38, also of Redfern Avenue, in Far Rockaway, resisted arrest by flailing his arms and ignoring

commands, police said. He was finally placed in handcuffs. He was in possession of a loaded gray and black Colt. 45 caliber handgun, police said. The firearm had been reported stolen by the South Charleston Police Department in West Virginia.

Deshaun T. Gray, 26, of East 144th Street in the Bronx, was arrested for being in the park after sunset. He was issued a desk appearance ticket and released.

Mccoy is charged with fourth-degree criminal possession, criminal possession of a firearm and third-degree criminal possession of a firearm: ammunition feeding device. She also has an felony Nassau County bench warrant for charges in 2018. Mccoy will be arraigned on May 17 at First District Court in Hempstead.

Williams is charged with fourthdegree criminal possession of stolen property, criminal possession of a firearm: posses a firearm, third-degree criminal possession of weapon, thirddegree criminal possession of a weapon: ammunition feeding device, seconddegree criminal possession of a weapon: loaded firear m and second-de g ree obstructing governmental administration. He will be arraigned when “medically practical,” police said.

Hewlett Woodmere Public Library’s Cultural Program Specialist, Nadine Connors, is retiring after 22 years. Nearly 25 years ago, HWPL’s former longtime director, Susan O. de Sciora, directed Connors to take the cultural program specialist test.

The two were already acquainted as their daughters were friends in the Port Washington School District, where Connors was on the Cultural Arts Committee.

Connors wanted to find a career for her background — partially from being on the Cultural Arts Committee — in music and theater, which is why DeSciora guided her to HWPL. Three years later, when the test was offered, Connors took it, interviewed for the position and got the job. She then preceded to go above and beyond the typical duties of the job description.

Connors began by developing Gold Hall, a new addition to the library. She brought brand new art and music programs to the community. She did not repeat a single program during her first three years. She also developed relationships with people and organizations in the community, such as the National Council of Jewish Women’s Peninsula Section, the Five Towns Indian Association and the HWPL’s Friends of the Library.

Especially involved in Friends of the Library — a volunteer group that supports the library — she handles a lot of planning, programming and billing for the group. “Nadine has a wonderful ear for musical programs so we’ve had some terrific programs,” Friends President Irene Levy said. With Connors is retiring, “they will hire somebody else who will do the job,” Levy added, “but will they do it with as much efficiency [and] taste as she does?

I don’t know.”

Connors also wrote for the library’s quarterly newsletter, Overleaf, growing it from at least six pages to 12 pages. She also learned grant writing — not a typical duty in her role — obtaining money for special, program-focused funds and opportunities.

Of the hundreds of grants that Connors wrote, the most significant was for the

Pagemasters founded by Connors in 2015.

It is a weekly reading and social program for challenged adults.

The Pagemasters received the $10,000 American Library Association’s American Dream Literacy Grant with Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant in 2019. “The grant was supposed to be for ESL support — English as a Second Language,” Connors said, “but I wrote it for developing the Pagemasters.” Though the Pagemasters did not fit the original criteria, HewlettWoodmere is one of 16 libraries in the country that received the grant — thanks to Connors.

What will HWPL be missing without Connors? “A workaholic who didn’t know she was one,” Friends Vice President Iris Gorenberg said. “She was honestly involved, so she would come with great enthusiasm and knowledge and set the pace.”

Over the years, while technology developed, Connors adapted so that the library programs could be up to date. She learned to operate sound and lighting systems and new computer software to run programs smoothly. “It was kind of like — who has to learn this?” Connors said. “Well, I decided I better learn it, because I’m the one who’s going to be standing there when it doesn’t work,” she joked, adding, “I don’t mind being challenged.”

The Friends threw a retirement luncheon for Connors at the Seawane Country Club in Hewlett Harbor on May 17, where they gifted her an Apple watch. “The Friends gave me an apple watch,” she said, “because they’ve always appreciated my ability to do technical things.” The Friends read aloud heartfelt poems about Connors’ retirement as she raised her eyebrows, looked to the ceiling and wiped below her eyes. “I got makeup on today,” Connor’s said, “this is tough!”

Connors still constantly has so many ideas about library programs and always has “thoughts on the back burner,” she said, “I have things I would love to do here [at HWPL] now — but we can’t.” Connors said, adding, “I keep thinking,” Connor’s said about her retirement, “is it really happening?”

Task force set to explore antisemitism surge 27-person committee will host public discussions, suggest legislation

Nassau County officials have created a special legislative task force to combat antisemitism and, immediately after being sworn in, went right to work.

Made up of eight legislators — four from each political caucus — as well as 18 members of the public, the task force is tasked to gather facts about the origins and extent of antisemitism in the county while working toward prevention methods like education and community collaboration.

The commission has a number of tasks before it, said County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who is part of the task force.

“What is the cause of antisemitism? How do we educate people? How do we liaison with the police department when a hate crime occurs?” Blakeman told the task force after they were sworn in. “These are just some of the things that you’ll be tackling here in this commission, and it’s important work.”

The task force is expected to host public hearings before developing a report filled with recommendations to the county legislature to combat antisemitism.

“We are living in a polarized time,” said Rabbi Eli Weinstock of the Jewish Center of Atlantic Beach, who chairs the task force. That time “has seen the rise of hate speech, which has seen a dramatic rise in antisemitic acts. A large proportion of hate crimes, overall, are antisemitic in nature. We’re here and we’re tasked to try and find mechanisms and ways to combat that.”

A 27-peRSon SpecIAL legislative task force is expected to research and ultimately recommend prevention methods in the hopes of combatting antisemitism in Nassau County.

The task force plans to host a virtual youth roundtable targeting antisemitism with a focus on how the law and public policy can help diminish bias and insensitivity.

The initiative to create the task force was spearheaded last summer by Plainview legislator Arnold Drucker. A bill establishing the task force was adopted unanimously by the County Legislature last August, and amended this year.

“It was clear that the need for action was urgent,”

Drucker said in a statement. In an audit of antisemitic incidents, last year, reported antisemitic incidents jumped 34 percent compared to 2020, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

“Now is the time to roll up our sleeves and work collaboratively with residents and community leaders,” Drucker said, “to devise and enact meaningful, enduring legislation that will strike directly at the fetid sources of antisemitism in our county.”

Nassau County cemented its relationship with Israel last week, signing an economic and cultural agreement with the Shomron.

It’s an area in the northern part of an Israeli territory commonly referred to as the West Bank, or Judea and Samaria.

“This is an agreement of friendship, understanding and solidarity,” Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman proclaimed during a ceremony in Mineola.

Blakeman’s Israeli counterpart, Shomron Regional Council chair Yossi Dagan, says his region has been the Jewish heartland since the days of the religion’s forefathers and prophets.

Mazi Melesa Pilip, a Great Neck-based legislator and a former Israeli Defense Forces paratrooper who emigrated to the Jewish state from Ethiopia during Operation Solomon in 1991, said the agreement would “continue an important and meaningful partnership and friendship based on social, economic, security and cultural” links.

“This event perfectly exemplifies the beautiful relationship between Israel and America,” Assemblyman Ari Brown said.

At a time “when people are trying to put a wedge between us, the county executive brings us together.”

In fact, that’s an aspect that sometimes gets lost, said Davidi Ben Zion, deputy head of the Samaria Regional Council.

Dov Hikind, the firebrand former Assemblyman from Boro Park, applauded what he called Blakeman’s leadership in joining with Israel.

“We are united with the people of Israel, and we are united with the communities — not ‘settlements’ — in Judea and Samaria,” Hikind said. “These are mag-

nificent cities with the most special people.”

Yet, it takes more than simply saying, “I support Israel,” the onetime lawmaker said, although it’s “a good start.”

“But this is called action,” Hikind said.

“This is called doing something real. You are saying to over half a million people in Judea and Samaria, ‘You are not alone.

We the people of Long Island — of America — we are with you.’”

Judea and Samaria is a subject of international controversy, with some referring to it as “occupied territory,” where development by Israel violates international law. Others maintain Israel is acting legally.

Blakeman, who’s visited the Shomron, described the area as critically situated relative to the rest of the country.

“It’s the high ground overlooking the Tel Aviv airport,” he said. “To give away that strategic area would put all of Israel in danger.”

Meanwhile, Israeli development there boosts everyone.

“What you won’t hear in the media is how many Palestinian Arabs are employed in Judea and Samaria in the factories, earning three times what they would if they were in the Palestinian Authority areas,” Blakeman said, explaining that Israelis “are providing a lot of economic opportunity for their Palestinian neighbors as well as for Israelis.”

While Judea was not represented at Thursday’s event, Blakeman — whose wife is Israeli — emphasized his support for them as well. Blakeman highlighted his latest personal link to the Jewish state, introducing his daughter, Ariel, a student at Bar-Ilan University near Tel Aviv. Just last week, he announced Ariel’s engagement to a former defense forces paratrooper.

In 2016, the Town of Hempstead proclaimed the Region of Shomron a “sister municipality.” Blakeman, a Hempstead councilman at the time, said then that “they are truly on the front lines.”

The Inwood United Soccer Club has been a steppingstone for many amateur soccer players to express their love for the sport for the past 10 years. Founded in 2012 by parents in Inwood, the club has succeeded in giving children an opportunity to learn, socialize, exercise and long-lasting friendships.

“We work for free, just to see our kids playing [and] doing some exercise,” Mayra Martinez, a mother of Inwood United players.

Coach Marlon Navarro, the coordinator for Inwood United, said the club was founded to provide an inexpensive way to teach children “discipline [and] tools, so they can use it in life through soccer.”

During the pandemic, Navarro said the club has had to downsize and raise its prices. Divided by age groups, the Inwood United once had teams for all ages, ranging from ages 7 to 16. Now, there are only two teams: the Inwood Pride for ages 14 and Inwood Dragons for ages 16.

At one point, Navarro said, the club had up to 300 players but because of the halt to sports due to the coronavirus, it now only has 60 children registered.

As a nonprofit, the club heavily relies on parent support and registration. To cover the cost of equipment, uniforms,

“Just the parents pay for them,” Navarro said. “We got no support from other organizations or government help.

We run the program by ourselves.”

Over the years, the club has struggled to find a home base to practice. “Some-

times we don’t have places to practice in [the] wintertime or at this time [spring],” Martinez said, “and we go anywhere.”

The club has maintained its standard of coaching and developing star players.

The club has played in several division championships in the Long Island Junior Soccer League competitions and Long Island Cup, the biggest soccer competi-

tions in the league.

Luis Magana, 20, of West Hempstead, was a part of the club for about five years throughout his middle school and high school career. He learned about the club after playing against his friend, who lived in Inwood and was in the club.

“I made a lot of memories there,” Magana said. “I made a lot of friends, [and] the coaches there— I'll never forget the coaches there. They were always amazing to me.”

The affordability of the club, which he said was cheaper than most soccer academies, and the opportunity to play in a higher league attracted Magana. “All the coaches there were amazing,” he said. “It wasn't an academy club. But we had a good team. It was a good thing for the amount that we were paying.”

Through the club, Magana was able to grow his passion for the sport and has continued to play at Nassau Community College. Magana said, he hopes to play professionally.

He attributes his motivation to further pursue soccer to the club’s support, training, and the lessons they taught him. “They taught me a lot of life lessons, not even just soccer like just in life in general,” Magana said. “I knew I could text any one of those coaches, and ask them for advice, and they'll be there for me.”

Hewlett coach Joyce Raikos believes there’s a “very good chance” the Bulldogs will return to Nassau Conference I boys’ tennis in 2023 following a double-digit win season this spring.

Led by undefeated No. 1 singles player and defending county champion Stephan Gershfeld, the Bulldogs entered the regular-season finale with an 11-2 mark and a playoff spot secured thanks to a runner-up finish to Wheatley in Conference II-A. In addition to the Nassau team playoffs, Hewlett will look to make noise this weekend at the county individual championships at Eisenhower Park with Gershfeld favored to defend his title, and its second and third singles players joining forces in the doubles tournament.

“Stephan plays USTA tournaments all over the country and I’ve never seen him pushed to the limit in a high school match,” Raikos said. “He hasn’t lost a set in my two seasons as coach. He’s an extremely talented and very smart player who easily adjusts to an opponent’s strengths and weaknesses.”

Last June, Gershfeld, now a junior, captured the county singles crown by defeating Roslyn’s Mikey Weitz 6-2, 6-1 in the finals. That victory came hours after Gershfeld topped Great Neck South’s Albert Hu 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals. Hu is considered this year’s main challenger to Gershfeld according to Raikos.

If Gershfeld repeats, he’ll advance to the state tournament set for June 2-4 at the National Tennis Center in Queens. There was no state tourney last season due to the pandemic.

Junior Alexander Sherman returned as Hewlett’s No. 2 singles player and won 13 of 14 matches. “He’s another tournamentlevel talent with a strong all-around game,” Raikos said. Sherman twice went the maximum three sets against Wheatley’s Aaron Raja and split results.

Sherman will team up with senior Benjamin Grushkovskiy, the Bulldogs’ returning starter at third singles and a two-year captain, and look to make another run in the county doubles tournament after

“Ben was able to grind out some tough matches,” Raikos said. “He plays with so much heart. He’s a big kid, about 6-foot-3, and our big hitter. He has a huge serve and forehand and likes to come to the net.”

In doubles, Hewlett’s locked lineup for the stretch run featured senior Daniel Savransky and freshman Dylan Weinman as the top pair, junior Justin Valentine and sophomore Ryan Weinman at No. 2, juniors Gregory Fradlis and Ethan Golduber at No. 3, and senior Benjamin Sherman and sophomore Alexandre Tourneux in

the fourth spot.

Valentine and Ryan Weinman were paired together last spring and enjoyed a strong finish, Raikos said. They picked up where they left off as well winning 12 straight matches. “They have tremendous chemistry,” she said.

Fradlis improved as much as anyone on the roster, Raikos noted, and his strong baseline game worked well with Golduber’s aggressive net play.

Also contributing to the team’s success in doubles were senior Jesse Menash and juniors Matthew Gershik, Alexander Hassine and Eric Kim.

Under a spring sky soft with the threat of rain in the air, Don Clavin joined fellow government officials and parents demanding Congress push much harder to alleviate the current national shortage of baby and medical formula.

“It’s the role of the federal government to step in at a time of need,” said Clavin, Town of Hempstead’s supervisor. “It’s disgraceful that we have to do this because the federal government have been sitting on their hands.”

Clavin called on President Joe Biden to use the Defense Production Act to direct federal funds to boost formula production.

The same act — a Cold War relic designed to use Washington resources to jump start private sector production during war and emergencies — was also used during the coronavirus pandemic to step up the manufacture of ventilators and other equipment intended to combat Covid-19.

The formula crisis stems from a pandemic-fueled nationwide supply chain and labor shortage that’s affecting a number of economic sectors. But it became even more critical after Abbott, a major formula manufacturer that produces the Similac baby formula brand, shut down its factory in Sturgis, Michigan, after reported safety issues with its products. Four infants in Minnesota, Texas and Ohio were hospitalized with bacterial infections. Two died.

At the news conference, Councilwoman Melissa Miller gestured toward her 22-year-old son Oliver, who sat in his wheelchair beside the podium. Oliver had a stroke prior to birth that affected his brain stem and left him with multiple disabilities.

“This shortage is more than just baby formula, which in itself is a crisis and needs to be addressed,” Miller said. “But in fact, millions of children and adults that have dietary special needs, their medical formulas are included in this shortage.”

Oliver has never been able to eat regu-

lar food. He relies completely on medical formula to live.

“When the formula recall happened, there was no communication to parents with baby formula or communications with parents of special need individuals, or adults with special medical nutrition needs,” Miller said. “I found out on a Facebook trading group for special needs equipment. I went and looked (at the lot numbers stamped on the canisters of formula): Every single case of formula that I had was part of the recalled lot.”

Miller’s online search for formula in February finally turned up four canisters of formula powder for $175. Now the same

four canisters on Amazon’s Canada site cost $315.

One strategy to keep Oliver supplied was to switch formulas, Miller said. But babies and medically needy adults don’t tolerate every type of formula. Switching formulas often causes diarrhea and other digestive disruptions, possibly leading to hospitalization.

John Caputo joined others the news conference because his daughter, like Oliver, needs a particular formula.

“Switching formula could mean days in the hospital,” the Lynbrook resident said. “I would urge everybody, parents — anybody else who takes care of someone with special needs — to reach out to your people in our local governments..”

Liquid infant formulas produced by Abbott were not affected by the recall.

A senior White House administrative official said at a May 12 White House news conference that the federal government has actually done a lot to get formula back on grocery shelves since the Feb. 17 product recall.

One national survey found more than 40 percent of retailers across the country were out of stock when it comes to formula, according to NPR. Yet, these actions should have happened months ago, Clavin said, urging constituents to call their representatives.

“That’s when you see the most reaction,” he said, “when people get together and make the phone calls and ask for action.”

Rikki Engelson, who’s originally from Woodmere but now lives in Manhattan, will attend her first retreat this weekend.

“As a working mother of two kids,” Engelson wrote in a text, “the only time out I get for myself is sitting in my bathroom” — where, she added, her kids sometimes follow her.

“I can not wait for a weekend to sleep past 6 am, relax and form a new community of moms,” Engelson wrote. “Camp was one of my happiest places as a kid and I can’t wait to go back there and rec-

Texting and social media were the main ways parents interacted with their friends at the height of the pandemic, Stern said, so the retreat is a great place to reconnect offline. “The sad reality is that moms are so busy caring for everyone else, they neglect themselves,” she

stated in a news release. “We are expected to be caregivers and nurturers, but it’s taking a toll on our mental and physical health.”

The 220-acre Tyler Hill campus has a nine-hole golf course, 12 tennis courts, two lakes and a pool. Mothers can take advantage of everything on the itinerary, or just relax by a lake. “It just gives them that break and peace of mind that every mom needs,” Siegel said, “particularly right now.”

“And I should say that the gift bags keep getting better and better every time,” Stern said, as mothers return home from the retreats with giant complimentary gift baskets valued at $100 or more.

There are three main retreat packages for a two-night stay at the camp. The first includes lodging at the newly renovated Inn at Tyler Hill, with hotel-like amenities, for $1,000. The second package is $850, and offers newly renovated private rooms with queen beds and bathrooms at the camp’s Wayne Hall — like the Inn but without the extra amenities. The third package, costing $700, includes an air-conditioned cabin with twin beds and a communal bathroom.

What’s next on the to-do list for Stern and Siegel? Putting together a dads’ timeout sometime this fall.

At 5:47 p.m., the police received a 911 call concerning the threat and responded. “A thorough and systematic search of the entire location was conducted, police stated in a news release. “After an extensive investigation there was no evidence of any credible threats found and the building was deemed safe. The investigation is ongoing.”

“The safety and security of all of our children, families, clients and staff is our highest priority and we take any and all threats very seriously,” Gural JCC CEO Aaron Rosenfeld wrote in the email.

Rosenfeld stated that they “immediately contacted the Nassau County Police Department,” and though no one was inside the building at 140 Central Ave., in Lawrence, on the JCC’s Harrison-Kerr Family Campus, the parking lot that was being used by another organization was evacuated. The campus is also home to Temple Israel of Lawrence.

“We remained in constant communication with the NCPD and our security team throughout the entire day and evening,” Rosenfeld said. “The NCPD bomb squad conducted a thorough search of our campus and determined this to be a negative threat and all of our facilities were deemed

Passion, politics, and your brain Brain scanning has allowed scientists to see what kinds of communication light up a person’s brain cells and what keeps them in a persistently sleepy state. Our brains turn off when a politician is boring and bland by nature or evasive by political expediency. We don’t want to force ourselves to l i s t e n t o t a l k t h a t ’s p r a c t i c a l l y designed to put us to sleep.

In contrast, the potential overturn of Roe vs. Wade has dramatically lit up our brains. People on both sides of the issue have taken to the streets to let

their viewpoints be known. Nothing boring about this issue! Indeed, the protesting in the streets has a strong potential to turn violent!

To top it off, the Supreme Court’s reputation is on the line. The Court is designed to be non-political, above the fray of politics. It’s supposed to reason out decisions, not make decisions based on religious beliefs, political ideology, or emotion. If the Court’s ruling ruins its reputation, what will come next?

Will the Court be disbanded? Will

people ignore its rulings? Will we vote to create term limits for the judges?

Like civil service exams, will the judicial appointments change from a political process to a competitive competency process?

Deep-seated emotions drive people – to protest, disobey, and become violent.

People think with their gut for we tend to be more emotional than rational creatures. We don’t prioritize credentials, statistics or reasoning if they’re masking religious rhetoric. Above all, we care about what affects us, our

loved ones, and our cherished beliefs.

We like to think of ourselves as an enlightened country. And in many, many ways, we are. Still …in Saudi Arabia, women only received the right to drive a motor vehicle in 2018. And yet, abortion is legal there if there’s a risk to a woman’s life, fetal impairment, or to protect a woman’s physical or mental health – including pregnancy a r i s i n g f ro m incest or rape.

Ireland, a predominately Catholic country, le g aliz ed abortion in 2018 for the first 12 weeks and later if the woman’s life or health is at inda apadin risk or there’s a fatal fetal a b n o r m a l i t y.

In Europe, abortion is legal in most European countries. It’s legal in Canada and no longer a crime in Mexico.

It’s yet to be seen but many believe that the new law of the land in the USA will outlaw termination of a pregnancy for any reason, putting a woman’s life at risk and putting doctors who perform an abortion at risk of being charged with murder.

Now for a bit of American history.

On Jan. 22, 1973, the Supreme Court handed down its historic ruling, stating that a woman’s right to abortion falls within the right to privacy protected by the 14th Amendment. The decision gave a woman a right to an abortion during the entirety of the pregnancy.

However, after the fetus’s viability to survive outside of the uterus, the state could choose to regulate or even proscribe abortion as long it protected the life and health of the mother.

Were there abortions taking place before Roe vs. Wade made it illegal? Of course. Women who could afford it traveled to states or countries where it was legal. Women who couldn’t afford it or had to keep the procedure secret typically had unsafe abortions, which increased infections, sterility and even death.

Will the overtur ning of Roe vs.

Wade stop all abortions? Of course not!

It will simply make it more dangerous for those with the least resources. Will our brain cells light up for those women and girls who find themselves in an impossible set of circumstances?

Or will our brain cells remain in a persistently sleepy state of ho-hum everyday routine?

There are certainly some advantages to living on an island — advantages Matt Cohen says Long Island doesn’t exploit enough. Especially when it comes to alternative energy sources like offshore wind.

“We’re an island,” Cohen, president of the Long Island Association, told a roundtable discussion in Melville last week.

“We’re surrounded by water. Iowa and Nebraska may not be able to do this, but we can. We’re in position to take advantage of it.”

Cohen brought together small business owners as well as representatives from four leading wind developers — Ørsted/ Eversource, Equinor, Community Offshore Wind and Attentive Energy — hoping they might find some synergies as part of several intimate 15-minute “speed-dating” style meetings.

Harrison Feuer, the New York-based spokesman for Norwegian petroleum company Equinor, called the association’s roundtable “inspiring.”

“There were so many people interested in this growing industry on Long Island and eager to see where they could learn more,” he said. “They want to get involved to help this industry grow, and the conversation in general was a great opportunity to connect with the folks on the ground and see how much support there is for offshore wind.”

It’s also a great opportunity to help develop new career paths, said Marjaneh Issapour, an associate dean focused on sustainable energy at Farmingdale State College.

“I’m here as an educator interested in the business and looking for possible employment pathways for our graduates,” she said. “The most exciting thing about this is mainly just that the fact that it’s actually happening now, and that it’s a realization. We’ve been talking about it for so long, and now we actually have a few projects in the pipeline. And that is great news for the local economy.” Ørsted’s roots are in fossil fuels, but the Danish company — named for scientist Hans Christian Ørsted — has since moved completely to renewable energy. It has joined with Connecticut-based offshore wind company Eversource on a pair of major projects in the region, including the South Fork Wind Farm — a dozen turbines spinning offshore 30 miles east of Montauk.

Construction on those turbines start and finish next year, according to Grant van Wyngaarden, who heads offshore procurement in North America for Ørsted.

It’s expected to deliver enough electricity to power more than 100,000 homes.

Sunrise Wind, expected to be constructed nearby in 2024, will be a much larger project with more than 80 turbines.

that it won during a recent auction hosted by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, according to company spokeswoman Alanna Russo.

“This is something we’ve thought about for many years, and we’re very excited, but we’re still in our infancy stage of developing our project,” she said.

“We’re doing site surveys, environmental assessment, and engaging with stakeholders, and hopefully it will be completed by the end of decade.”

For Jamie Shellenberger-Bessman, who represents the Attentive Energy subsidiary of France’s TotalEnergies Renewables, says her role is more about education — not just of Attentive Energy’s work, but renewable energy in general.

ALANNA RussO, thE strategic engagement director for Community Offshore Wind — which is developing a seabed lease in the New York Bight — says they hope to get some of its wind energy projects off the ground and running by the end of the decade.

“I have conversations every day with people who don’t even know what an offshore wind farm is and the massive opportunity that’s out there,” she said. “So, it’s just about making sure we’re making those connections. We believe the younger generation is the future because it’s the people in junior high and high school right now who are going to be building these things, so we’re looking to make connections there.”

The Ocean Energy Management bureau auctioned off six leases last February in the Bight for $4.4 billion, including $795 million from Attentive Energy. The leases include more than 460,000 leasable acres with the hopes of producing enough energy for nearly 2 million homes.

Register for the Town's Beachside Triathlon, deadline is Sept. 12 Registration is under way for the annual Town of Hempstead Beachside Triathlon at Town Park Lookout in Lido Beach on Sept. 17. The deadline to sign up is Sept. 12, but there will no race-day sign-ups and participants will be capped at 250.

A triathlon is three events in one: swimming, biking and running a roughly 14-mile course. The ocean swim is three-quarters of a mile, the bike portion is 10 miles and the run is 3 miles.

Awards will be given to the top three finishers in 10 age categories for both men and women ranging in age from 18 to 65-plus.

For town residents 18 to 59, the entry fee is $48.50. For town residents 60 and over it is $24.25 (enter age when registering online for discount). All non-residents it is $72 and for military

veterans it is $24.25.

Q. We need to simplify our job. The costs are out of control. Can we only do plans for the part of our home we’re adding on, since a few architects are telling us we need plans of the whole house, even though we’re only doing an addition for a backyard den off our kitchen, with a deck? How do we simplify?

A. Somebody named Murphy once said, “Whatever can go wrong will go wrong.” Someone named Stein responded to that by saying, “Murphy was an optimist!” You can now quote Leeper’s Law: The act of simplifying often leads to further complication. In the process of trying to make things easier, you may have unanticipated problems that can surprise you.

I started writing this column because I saw people making the biggest investment of their lives without truly understanding the process or what to expect. Documentation onte eeper and planning shouldn’t be taken for granted. Part of a licensed professional’s job is consumer protection, on top of combining artistic needs, structure, function and systems.

From your perspective, we need to only provide the planning for the affected areas. That seems simple enough. But then things get more complicated, because our plans are reviewed by so many others who all have their particular point of view.

Building officials see your home or business differently than you do. Years ago, when everything was done with paper and pencil, we submitted plans and they got reviewed at face value, such as only looking at the room you want to add. Then computers compiled information that allowed officials to quickly locate the whole property history and possible illegal uses that were previously recorded. After a while, it became a regular assumption of government that people were all trying to get away with something most of the time, and the extra level of scrutiny led to officials asking for more and more information, mainly because some owners ruined trust for everybody.

You are automatically under suspicion for illegal two-family use, illegal sheds, decks, pools and fences, or the lack of a permit for your air conditioner or finished basement or attic. Add to that the zoning information, “clear sight triangle” to avoid blocking drivers from seeing across your property, energy code analysis for even your simple addition, plus light and ventilation charts to show your window changes and there you go, not so simple anymore. Simple would be great, if it were also reality.

Your home may have had a violation that was never cleared from a suspicion of a former owner who rented the basement, or a long-term house guest who caused a neighbor to secretly report you, without any need for proof. It happens more often than you imagine, and then things get complicated just proving that there’s no illegal use, or you have to hire a professional to produce plans for more than you expected. You could start out simply, but be prepared for the rest. Good luck!

n just under six weeks, New York state voters will get a chance to select the candidates for governor and State Assembly. With no disrespect to that branch of the Legislature, and having been an Assembly member myself, it is obviously the race for governor that is the most significant one from the standpoint of the millions of New Yorkers who will cast their ballots.

New York is a state that tilts heavily toward the Democratic Party, so the party’s primary contest on JERRY Tuesday, June 28, will more than KREMER likely choose the person who will run our state for the next four years. I’m not ignoring the fact that there’s a Republican challenger, U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin, but with the highest vote concentration in the downstate region, a big Republican vote from upstate won’t be significant enough to drown out the heavy Democratic enrollment elsewhere.

Candidate Tom Suozzi, another member of Congress, has spent a substantial amount of money on television ads intro-

ducing himself to the general public. He has a list of promises on taxes, crime and a variety of other issues. But considering the fact that he’s running against Gov. Kathy Hochul, who already has the job, Suozzi has yet to tell voters why they should choose him over Hochul, who would be the first woman elected governor in state history.

Suozzi is running as a right-of-center candidate in a state where most of the voters who show up for primary elections lean to the left. Whether the progressives will turn out for Hochul is still an open question.

The recently passed state budget was a big victory for Hochul. While some armchair critics have blamed the lateness of the spending plan on the governor, the delay was partially caused by her insistence that there be bail reform changes in the package. Because the new budget had so many of Hochul’s proposals, the Senate and Assembly leadership refused to attend the traditional news conference following its passage.

Having served as chairman of the Assembly Ways and Means Committee for 10 years, I can attest to the fact that the new spending plan spreads equal

amounts of money throughout the state, as opposed to previous budgets, which were heavily weighted toward New York City and Long Island. The city got substantial amounts of money for health and day care workers and big dollars for mass transit. Long Island was a big winner, with record amounts of school aid, money for road improvements and for clean water projects.

Suozzi has been critical of the approval of public funds for a new stadium for the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. Historically, western New York, like most upstate areas, has been an orphan when it comes to state dollars. If there were a grant of state money for a football stadium on the West Side of Manhattan, you’d hear the same gripes from upstate voters. Previously, Gov. Andrew Cuomo awarded funds for numerous upstate programs, but many, like a Buffalo solar factory, produced no economic gain.

There is no doubt that crime will be a big issue for voters, but the responsibility for New York City’s current crime wave is an issue for Mayor Eric Adams, and can’t be shifted to the state. The controversial bail reform law that was signed by Cuomo has now been amended

Thanks to recent revelations about an upcoming U.S. Supreme Court decision that may overturn Roe v. Wade, Hochul has set aside $35 million in funds for women in need of abortions where appropriate. There are no differences between the two Democrats on this issue, but the governor has the money, so she has the upper hand.

Suozzi has one self-made disaster to deal with when it comes to the LGBT community. His recent description of Florida’s controversial so-called “Don’t Say Gay” law as “reasonable” resulted in some serious pushback against him that will be hard to controvert. How bad a hit he will take is still up in the air. The electoral clock is ticking, and six weeks go by quickly. Suozzi is facing a big challenge to capture the attention of the voters, and at this point he has failed to get any big wins on the campaign trail, which leaves him where he started — on first base.

A Memorial Day like no other in our lives

he things we carry to this Memorial Day, 2022, are freighted with more recent events than past battles. On the last Monday in May, we look back to honor our war dead; this year we also hold in our hearts love for the friends and family members who died this year and last in the pandemic.

We stagger under the weight of one million Americans dead of Covid-19. This has been a war, too.

This year, especially, it feels appropriate to broaden the meaning of Memorial RAnDi Day to honor the KREiss sacrifice of all those who have lived through the plague of our time, including the medical teams and the teachers and the workers who kept showing up and, especially, the parents who have fought a front-line battle every day since winter 2020. The efforts of scientists to develop vaccines with unprecedented speed have been astonishing and heroic.

My special heroes are our teenagers, who gave up nearly every single aspect of joy in their lives to stay healthy and

keep their parents and grandparents safe. Teens live for connection and freedom and breaking through boundaries and trying new things. During Covid, the constraints have been particularly onerous for them. In an ironic twist, just as the world was awakening to the dangers of screen time, so many millions of kids were pushed ever further into the digital world of texting and Zooming. As we all know, our teens are experiencing a secondary epidemic of depression and stress and mental health crises.

I want to honor their sacrifice. I say this out loud to my teenage grandkids, and I want them to know that we know how tough it has been.

The parents of young kids have been raising their children without the relief of school and play dates and family gatherings. Many struggled to keep the home front safe and productive. They were also trying to work, to pay the bills, to get meals on the table. I wish there were medals of honor for them, too.

Growing up, I watched Memorial Day parades along Broadway in Woodmere.

Later, my kids marched down the avenue with their school bands, tooting on their

clarinets. In my mind’s eye I can see them looking so proud to be part of the parade, glancing sideways to catch my eye as they walked by. They stopped at the war memorial on the corner of Broadway and Conklin and, in a solemn ceremony, offered gratitude to those who died in our great wars.

I imagine that as children march in this year’s Memorial Day parades and parents gather on the sidewalks, with or without masks, thoughts of other losses will bleed into the moment — as it should be when so many are scarred by painful memories of the past two years.

Many Americans visit cemeteries and place flags on the graves of soldiers who defended American democracy in conflicts going back to the Civil War. We have seen images of hundreds of thousands of flags on the Mall in the nation’s capital, each a reminder of someone who died too soon or too young during this raging pandemic. For me, it is all threaded together.

These past two years have been a battle, complicated by divisions and conflicts among our citizens. Add to this the suffering in Ukraine beaming into our

It’s a big job being a thoughtful American citizen today. We want to keep up our traditions and we need to move along with life, somehow weaving our most recent pandemic losses into the fabric of our days.

According to NPR, Marked By Covid, a grass-roots group, is advocating for a National Day of Remembrance to honor those who died.

In the meantime, on this Memorial Day, I will think about all those brave kids who carried the American flag onto beaches in Normandy, and friends who died in Vietnam and those who were killed in Afghanistan and on so many other foreign fields far from home.

I will remember the more recent losses of friends who died of Covid, and I will also go to a barbecue and eat a hot dog and celebrate our lives, which are ever so precious. We just have to do it all.

This Memorial Day is like no other.

Another tragedy, and no hope on the horizon

And then there was Aaron Salter, a 55-year-old retired police officer. He spent his days after his time on the force greeting customers as they walked into the Tops supermarket in the Masten Park neighborhood of Buffalo. His job was security, and everyone knew him. And he knew everyone.

Well, not everybody, unfortunately. Not the monster who was tearing through the store’s parking lot on Saturday, using what police believe were illegally modified semiautomatic assault weapons, emblazoned with racist sentiments like, “Here’s your reparations.” While at first glance it seemed he was firing his weapon indiscriminately, authorities believe his targets were quite deliberate: anyone who was Black.

Salter had been trained to deal with this very scenario, an unfolding mass shooting.

He had never come face to face with it, but he knew what he had to do — protect the lives of everyone around him, even if that meant taking the life of the man who threatened all of them.

Salter pulled his handgun from its holster and took aim. Police said he fired a number of shots, and hit the perpetrator at least once. Except the bullets didn’t stop him. They didn’t even slow him down. The young man was reportedly wearing body

armor, protecting him from heroes like Salter.

The gunman reportedly turned his own gaze toward Salter — who did not have the benefit of protective armor — and pulled the trigger.

Another senseless mass shooting. No. 198, in fact, according to NPR and the Gun Violence Archive — in 2022. That’s right.

Last Saturday was the 134th day of the year, yet this country has already had 198 mass shootings. They claimed the lives of 210 people, and forever changed the lives of 836 more who survived.

On Jan. 1 alone — New Year’s Day — the nation was victim to seven mass shootings, including one in Philadelphia that claimed the life of one person, and injured four others.

What happened in Buffalo is believed to be racially motivated. And as evidence continues to accumulate about the shooter, it’s hard to believe otherwise. And while tackling racism is a different discussion that needs far more space than we have here, the fact is that this is a nation where there are too many guns are on the street, and more often than not, they are used to instantly destroy families, and communities.

The Philadelphia shooting wasn’t believed to be racially motivated. It was just a dispute, enhanced by alcohol, that turned deadly simply because a gun was available. It’s the kind of violence you almost never hear about anywhere else outside the U.S. But here it’s something we expect on any day that ends with a "Y." The alleged gunman in the Tops shooting is said to have illegally modified his

letters Randi’s ‘raised voice for women’ To the Editor: Thanks to Randi Kreiss for having the courage and honesty to write about the threat to a woman’s right to control her body and her destiny (“Threat to choice has women on the march,” May 12-18). I am approaching 70. I have raised two successful and loving human beings who were wanted and treasured. I also had the ability to end two unwanted pregnancies early in my 20s, which allowed me to continue my life to the point where I was financially, emotionally and socially able to welcome and nourish the much-wanted children I did choose to bear. I have never regretted my decision to terminate those unintended pregnancies, and am extremely grateful that the choice was mine to make.

This is such a frightening time in our lives, as we watch such hard-fought gains be ripped away by religious and social hypocrites who appear to care far more about life before birth than the life of a child — and its parents — after it arrives.

Following the tragedy, many lawmakers took to social media and called up reporters to express their condolences and outrage. Gov. Kathy Hochul made the rounds on national television, preaching about the need for better gun control. But as quickly as those sentiments flare up, they just as quickly flame out. Over and over again, we get the same action aimed at ending this true pandemic: absolutely nothing.

That must end. The excuses must end.

The silly arguments that any regular person needs a weapon that can instantly kill or maim a large number of people must be put to rest. The time for talk is over. The time to act is now.

Aaron Salter should have never spent the final moments of his life face to face with a monster. He had a distinguished career with the Buffalo Police Department, regularly putting his life on the line.

Yet even a neighborhood supermarket proved to be more dangerous for him than some of the most violent hotspots in the world.

No more. Read their names again — Celestine Chaney. Roberta Drury. Andre Mackneil. Katherine Massey. Margus Morrison. Heyward Patterson. Aaron Salter.

Geraldine Talley. Ruth Whitfield. Pearl Young. And remember them the next time you think there’s something more important than ending this nation’s gun crisis once and for all.

very weekday at 10:06 a.m., I walk into my high school engineering class and take a seat among my peers. I spend the period learning the same material as my classmates, completing the same assignments as them and receiving the same education. I wouldn’t think twice about attending if it weren’t for the fact that 15 pairs of eyes are on me the moment I walk into the room, for one reason and one reason only: I’m a girl in a classroom full of boys.

Amazingly, this one simple attriIlana bute of mine has power to GrEEnbErG the instantly draw so much attention.

For roughly 40 minutes, I am no longer a student who loves engineering. Rather, I’m a girl who loves engineering.

I’d like to imagine a perfect world, with equal participation of men and women in all professions. However, while there is more opportunity these days for both men

and women to break into rigidly defined, gender-specific jobs, an imbalance still holds in certain career paths, including science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM. I’m a high school freshman who has always been passionate about STEM. Yet despite efforts by well-meaning stakeholders and educators to promote more enthusiasm among women in these subjects, I can’t help but feel that today’s inspiring message for girls in the field is too wrapped up in their gender.

Instead of pushing for girls to be treated like everyone else, there is an unhealthy obsession with making gender the centerpiece of today’s advocacy for girls in STEM. I often receive praise for being “confident enough” to pursue what has been labeled an unlikely passion for my gender.

I garner attention and adulation for defying gender barriers by deciding to enroll in STEM-based classes.

But I find this focus on my gender distracting from my work and frustrating, to

lEttErs Randi, regardless of the pushback you may receive on this column — much of it from older men, I suspect! — please stay strong and remain a raised voice for women, their bodies and their choices. The specter of a Margaret Atwoodtype dystopia rising in our midst grows more real every day. Like you, I cannot believe that we are fighting for basic rights we believed we had secured decades ago. Those who opened the Pandora’s box of Trumpism and religionsaturated politics must not be allowed to damage this country more than they have already.

A decision that was theirs to make To the Editor: I cannot agree with Randi more about what she wrote. Her decision to have an abortion was only for her and her husband to make. I am certain they did not make this decision lightly or quickly. Whatever their reasons, they did what they thought was the right decision at the time.

I have known women who have had the procedure, and whatever their reasons were, I supported them.

It is an extremely personal matter, and I applaud Randi for coming for-

say the least. I just want to escape the label of feminism attached to my interest in STEM, and simply be able to enter my engineering class without getting noticed, just like boys do.

Today’s educational programs, like Girls Who Code, while inspiring and well-intentioned, inadvertently call attention to the fact that STEM isn’t a “normal” activity for girls. By singling out girls in creating specialized female-oriented programs, educators seem to acknowledge that girls aren’t expected to be like their gender opposites in science. To me, it’s akin to creating a group called Teenagers Who Respect Their Parents or Kids Who Aren’t Always On Their Phones.

Granted, there is no mistaking that my interests in STEM as a girl are considered rare by today’s standards. Women account for roughly half of the population, but they comprise only 28 percent of workers in STEM fields, according to the American Association of University Women.

Perhaps that’s because math and science

continue to be promoted as “male-oriented” subjects.

I’ve seen this firsthand. In middle school, I was one of two girls in a class of 20 students in a computer animation program. On the website of a prestigious math summer program, girls were especially encouraged to apply, because most of its participants are male. Disturbingly, even my early-childhood day camp discouraged girls from choosing sciencerelated activities, and our choice of workshops didn’t include the boys’ activities of engineering and rocket science. Our choices included ceramics, dance and “beauty school.”

Yes, there is still a lack of equality in perception, but the way to fix this isn’t by forming a club exclusively for girls that puts the emphasis on “girls coding” instead of simply “coding.” Educators should create courses that include both boys and girls. While I’m grateful for the progress women have made in STEM, I look forward to the day when walking into my engineering class won’t be cause for surprise.

Details: The Supreme Court justices are not pawns to be manipulated. To expect a double-unanimous vote of 50 Democratic senators to confirm a pair of young replacements is a risky bet, the effort itself would demolish any remaining shred of court legitimacy, and nothing would be gained, because Sen. Mitch McConnell’s supermajority would remain.

Concept: The battle for the court is over. The present battle is for Congress, and it will be over by Christmas. Mr. Adarichev’s suggestion that Democrats adopt Republicans’ “Machiavellian” tricks to fight for power means they would abandon the laws, institutions, and aspirations of the American project.
