After the attack, four days in Israel Atlantic Beach couple volunteer to aid Jewish state

After the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, Bettina Kramer, of Atlantic Beach, was searching for a way to help the Jewish state, and she found it: the Jewish National FundUSA. The fund was established in 1901, in an effort among Jewish communities worldwide to guarantee a resilient and safe homeland in Israel. Over the years, the organization has undertaken a diverse range of projects across Israel.

Kramer and her husband, Allen, took part in a four-day volunteer mission to help out in the wake of the attacks, and amid the

Israel-Hamas war. Roughly 60 people boarded a flight to Israel on Dec. 17. The volunteers did four to six hours of work each day, cooking, assisting in day care centers, doing laundry or cleaning up.

The Jewish National Fund-USA covered all expenses except airfare — accommodations, armed security, transportation to sites and meals. More trips from the United States are scheduled through May, and January is already sold out.

The flight to Israel wasn’t new for Bettina Kramer, but this time it felt different, and she felt it as soon as she got off the plane at Ben Gurion Airport.

Atlantic Beach man faces accusations of antisemitism

A video circulating on multiple digital platforms over the past few days appears to show Atlantic Beach resident Michael DeCandia confronting two women posting flyers in the village reminding of those being held captive by Hamas in the Middle East.

Considered a terrorist group by the United States and the European Union, Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people, according to Israeli officials, and kidnapping roughly 200 people. Since then, several hostages have been released while others have died. The hostages are a mix of people from Israel and other countries, including the United States.

Audrey Mordos, one of the two women who appear in the nearly 90-second video, says she sent the video to people she knows, with one of them submitting it to Stop Antisemitism — a group that describes itself as a “non-partisan U.S.based organization fighting and exposing antisemitism.”

Stop Antisemitism posted the video on its profile through the former Twitter social media platform now known as X. “We’re for Israel. You’re bringing awareness to nobody,” DeCandia told the women in the video. “This is a Jewish community. We know.”

DeCandia later told the Herald the homes where the women were posting at the time of the video had residents who were Palestinian and Arab.

“They don’t want to see signs of hate,” he told the women in the video, adding they should “go to your own homes and put the (expletive) signs up.”

During the exchange captured on the video, the women repeatedly stated that

Hamas “also kidnapped Arabs … and killed a woman who had 10 children.”

The exchange ultimately ended with DeCandia walking away, saying, “Have a good day.” One of the women replies with, ”Have a good day, Shabbat shalom,” followed by a few words in Hebrew. Then, after what appears to be DeCandia giving the women the middle finger and another vulgar gesture, the woman yells, “Disgusting! Disgusting!”

Mordos later said she filed a police

report. She only wants an apology.

DeCandia told the Herald he was defending his property after the women put up three hostage flyers on trees in front of his house that he took down.

“We don’t live in dreck,” DeCandia said. “We pay a lot of taxes to live here.

The posters are uncomfortable to see. I don’t want things on my property.”

While he admits he “did get a little upset,” DeCandia added there are people supporting him, and called the video “a horrible mess.”

Mordos has posted hostage flyers since a week after the Hamas attack. Although Atlantic Beach does have an ordinance prohibiting the posting of such signs, Mordos says she informed village officials about her efforts, and has not received a negative reaction.

“I don’t do this in the middle of the night,” Mordos said. “I do this during the day.”

“This is an emotionally charged situation. Bringing awareness to the hostages is a good thing. But I’m not getting involved physically.”

In a statement, Atlantic Beach village officials said they were saddened by what they saw in the video, and denounce any acts of antisemitism.

“The behavior displayed in Atlantic Beach goes against all of our beliefs and values,” according to the statement. “We stand behind Israel, and pray for the safe return of all of the hostages. We wish for a happy and healthy new year, and peace on Earth.”

Nassau County Bridge Authority unveils E-ZPass system

EZ-Pass, the cashless toll system, in operation at the Atlantic Beach Bridge toll plaza since mid-December was officially celebrated with a ribbon cutting that included County Executive Bruce Blakeman, an Atlantic Beach resident.

“Welcome to the new Atlantic Beach Bridge and I say that because today we’re recognizing the fact that we’re kind of marrying history and the future together on this day with the implementation of the electronic toll collection system, also known as EZ-Pass,” Nassau County Bridge Authority Executive Director Raymond Webb, said at the Dec. 20 ceremony that also included cake.

As of Dec. 13, E-ZPass has been accepted in the bridge’s, formerly cashonly booths. It took the authority 362 days from the initial vote to install E-ZPass to get this system functioning for customers of the bridge, Samuel Nahmias, chairman of the NCBA board said.

“The board was faced with a decision of either investing similar sums for new technology for only cash, or rather a new system with the ability to accept EZPass,” Nahmias said. “The decision was a no-brainer.”

As part of the celebration, Nahmias recognized Michael Merola, a longtime employee of the NCBA, who died suddenly on Sept. 14, during the planning and installation of the system.

“When I came into office, I wanted to make sure that we got this bridge up to where it needed to be, because I was very concerned about a lot of things, the maintenance, the engineering, the repairs, the finances,” Blakeman said.

He commended the board for their selection of Webb as their executive director.

“They didn’t just hire a professional, they hired the professional, someone who was the executive director of bridges and tunnels, for the MTA, probably one of the largest transportation organizations in the world, to run this bridge,” Blakeman said, adding he is satisfied with the NCBA investments in structural soundness and aesthetics as well as the efficiency of the E-ZPass system.

Assemblyman Ari Brown, who represents Atlantic Beach as part of the 20th Assembly District, noted the operational upgrade.

“Efficiency for my constituents, it can’t get better than that,” he said of the new system. Brown also serves as the deputy mayor of Cedarhurst village.

County Leg. Howard Kopel, who represents the Five Towns, said EZ-Pass installation was a longtime coming.

“I wish they would have done it years ago,” said Kopel, who also serves as the Legislature’s deputy presiding officer.

Roger Avenue site in Inwood could be transformed

Lifelong Inwood resident David Hance remembers throwing rocks at the remaining windows of the unused and rundown Rockaway Metal Products building at 175 Roger Ave. in the Five Towns community when he was a kid.

Hance, now a successful business owner and president of the Inwood Civic Association, views the site that could be transformed into a 68,000-square-foot warehouse on nearly 5 acre parcel as a promising restart for a property that was once contaminated and off the tax rolls.

“We think in the end it’s a net positive,” Hance said, representing the civic association’s board. “Anything beats a dilapidated, broken building that became a dumping ground.”

The Town of Hempstead’s Industrial Development Agency has given preliminary approval on economic incentives for the $48 million project for AIREF JFK IC LCC, an affiliate of Ares Industrial Real Estate Fund LP, a global real estate investor.

A single-family house at 41 Cerro St. will also be demolished to make way for the warehouse that could be leased to one or two tenants, and will have 14 loading docks, 68 parking stalls and one drive-in entryway. Two of the parking spaces will have charging stations for electric vehicles.

Vacant since 1987, site was originally developed with a 155,000-square-foot onestory warehouse building built in three stages from 1954 through 1967. The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation, along with the state’s Department of Health, determined that the site posed a significant threat to pub-

lic health after it was discovered that Rockaway Metal Products Inc., a sheet metal fabrication factory, which occupied the site from 1971 to 1987, disposed of hazardous products on-site and arsenic, lead and cadmium were found by the federal Environmental Protection Agency in 1992.

Designated a Brownfield site, cleanup was performed by two previous LLCs under the state’s Brownfield Cleanup Program with oversight by the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation.

Nassau County’s real estate department had owned the land and building since 1995. A community eyesore, the County Legislature approved borrowing $2.1 million to raze the building in 2018. Inwood 175 LLC and AJM Capital II LLC bought the property that same year. AIREF bought the property last June.

“I listened to my constituents for what the best economic use would be to not be a burden on the taxpayer,” said County Legislator Carriè Solages, who fought to get the site cleaned up.

Though Solages won’t represent Inwood anymore because of redistricting, he said he would still advocate for a capital plan to improve Sheridan Avenue, a roadway in the immediate area that sees a heavy volume of truck traffic where they are homes and a public school.

Hance noted and so did a few neighbors on Facebook that truck traffic is an issue in the community, especially on Bayview Avenue, where most of the vehicles enter off Sheridan Avenue, and access the side streets. The immediate area is home to several businesses that have a huge amount of trucks that roll through the neighborhood daily. John F. Kennedy International Airport’s cargo terminal is less than 5 miles from Roger Avenue.

“Every project has its pros and cons, we’ll see how it goes,” Hance said.

Construction on the site is planned to get under way in March.

Any monies paid to the pooled income trust are not counted as income for Medicaid purposes, allowing you to qualify for Community Medicaid.

The number of hours you will receive depends on the county’s assessment of your needs regarding the activities of daily living (ADL’s). Some of these are eating, bathing, shopping, cooking, personal hygiene, ambulating, housekeeping, dressing, etc.

Several non-profit organizations exist that offer pooled trusts. Applying to join is a formal process with which the elder law firm will assist. Costs generally include minimal start-up fees, an initial deposit and reasonable maintenance fees.

One of the two men who allegedly stole a check worth nearly $8,000 and that was deposited into bank on Staten Island.

Two men allegedly stole an $8,000 check Nassau police are looking for two men who allegedly stole a check for nearly $8,000 possibly from the Atlantic Beach Post Office after a man mailed the check on March 15 of 2023.

On July 26, the man, 69, was informed that his check was not received, Nassau police said.

The next day, the man went to his bank and was told that the check was deposited by an unidentified person into a bank account on Staten Island. The subsequent police investigation found a video of an unidentified man taking the check from the bank, according to police. The investigation also uncovered

that another unidentified man was also associated with the bank account used to deposit the check.

Based on the video viewed by police, both men are described as 20- to 25-years old, are considered tall with slim builds and long hair. One man has a black goatee with a tattoo on his right hand. He was seen wearing a blue jacket, gray/orange pants, a red shirt and white sneakers.

Hewlett wrestling is off to a rollicking start this season, winning all eight of its dual meets and taking first place in the Battle at the Harbor tournament in Cold Spring Harbor on Dec. 16.

In that tournament, Hewlett wrestlers soundly defeated their Rocky Point, Northport and Westbury counterparts in pool play to advance to the semifinals, where they defeated Shoreham-Wading River with 36 cumulative points to Shoreham’s 29.

In the championship, they beat East Islip, 37-30, with seven individual victories – four by pinfall – compared to east Islip’s six.

The victory capped a dominant week for Hewlett, who just a day earlier defeated Chaminade in a dual meet, 35-20, and handily polished off Mineola, 49-20, on Dec. 13.

According to Hewlett coach Stephen Jones, it was the second dual meet tournament championship in school history – the first coming last year. He added the

team’s success is the result of many years of development of his student-athletes.

“We have a group of kids that have been part of the program a long time, including our youth program and P.A.L. program,” he said. “They finally have gotten older and they’re all studs. Kids really want to be like them.”

A major part of their success is sophomore Jesse McMahon, who has been wrestling at 116 lbs. A conference champion last year, McMahon helped Hewlett secure the Battle at the Harbor championship by pinning his East Islip opponent in the final round in just under three minutes.

Undefeated so far this season, his success is driven by his pure ferocity on the mat. “He gets after it,” said Jones. “Fox six minutes, he comes at you and fights.

He’s a super freakish athlete.”

Another youthful star is freshman Carlos Salazar (124), who Jones said has the potential to be a state finalist. While he nearly matches McMahon in toughness, his coach said what sets him apart is his technical skills on the mat.

Two senior captains who’ve also found success this year are Kirk Smith and Eric Gendlin. Smith, an All-County wrestler since eighth grade, has tallied more than 100 victories over his five-year Hewlett career. Gendlin, two-time AllCounty, has the potential to win a county championship too with a strong second half, said Jones.

Another senior Captain, Oleg Daniloff, won first place at another tournament, King of the Mat at Hewlett High School on Dec. 2, for the 170-lb. weight class.

And junior heavyweight Jordan Sita helped secure the Dec. 16 tournament championship by pinning his East Islip opponent in 2 minutes and 24 seconds.

Sita, who Jones said had started the season as a backup, “Has stepped up. That next-guy-up kind of mentality.”

Hewlett had a tough matchup with conference 3B opponent Wantagh Dec. 22, falling 41-17. “These kids are dedicated,” said the coach. “They’re battle tested.

We’ve wrestled one of the toughest schedules in the state. They’re ready to peak at the right time.”

Loans offer financial lifeline after flooding The lingering remnants from Tropical Storm Ophelia — which dumped intense rainfall on Nassau County late last September — left a number of businesses and homeowners to pick up the pieces.

Dozens of Long Island homes were drenched, basements and personal property swallowed up. Businesses like Valbrook Diner in Valley Stream lumbered back to life in the ensuing clean-up after losing thousands in food, lost work for employees, and a damaged roof.

But some measure of financial relief, announced last month, is now available.

The federal government is offering up to $500,000 in low-interest home repair loans through the Small Business Administration. Businesses could be eligible for much more to replace lost inventory and equipment.

The final deadline to apply is Feb. 2, at SBA.gov website.

Gov. Kathy Hochul described the federal relief program as one that is aimed at “helping to alleviate the impacts of the flooding to all areas of our state disaffected by extreme weather events.”

The problem of hefty interest rates sometimes incurred when financing repairs with conventional credit cards, for example, can be largely avoided through SBA loans, argued SBA spokeswoman Sharon Gadbois. That, she adds, is the biggest boon for homeowners and businesses.

“The interest rate for homeowners and renters can be as low 2.5 percent compared with say, 20 percent on a credit card,” Gadbois said. “That’s a big difference. That’s thousands of dollars you would avoid having to pay up.”

The SBA also can offer an interestfree repayment window at the start of the loan — usually for 12 months — and

generally, borrowers have up to 30 years to pay it off.

“When people go through some kind of catastrophic event such as flooding or a tornado that disrupts their home or lifestyle at home, it’s almost like there’s a little mini tornado going on in their mind,” Gadbois said. “And, so, everything stops. The spending stops. They have to redistribute or reassess what’s going on.”

Often that “reassessing” comes in the form of tightening their spending bills, laying off staff, or rolling back their business expenses, she said. The SBA loans are intended to reduce or reverse this financial downturn by stabilizing people’s expectations of their financial future, and thus keep their budgets in order and their businesses afloat.

But other forces at play may make these loans more appealing over others.

Those already weighed down with repaying multiple credit cards or credit card loans may be less willing to take on more debt, no matter how generous the terms of repayment.

But Gadbois says it’s better to apply and have the option than to be shut out entirely.

“If you’re approved for the loan, you have up to 60 days to decide whether you want to take it or not,” she said. “Applying before the deadline is important because it preserves your options for you and your family.”

One thing that struck Allen that was different from prior trips to Israel was how empty the streets were, except for Tel Aviv, he said. “At night, there were people in restaurants, but it didn’t feel the same,” he said. “Everybody was worried about sirens going off, family, children, etcetera.”

An exhibit at the Tel Aviv Expo, “Nova 6.29,” named for the hour on Oct. 7 when the first rockets fell at the Tribe of Nova music festival, made a deep impression on Bettina, she said. At the time, there was a crowd of more than 3,000 concertgoers.

“One of the survivors spoke to us, and everything about it was very moving,” Bettina said. “They showed cars with bullet holes, porta potties where the terrorist came and killed people hiding in there — it was just really moving and extremely well done.”

she said. “It was amazing.”

In addition to supporting the orphanage, Schwarz is a member of Hewlett High’s Environmental Club, which tends the school garden, across East Rockaway Road from the campus. She is also president of the Best Buddies International Club, a role in which, Schwarz said, she is learning leadership skills. Best Buddies works with students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and Schwarz plans projects and activities for them.

Hewlett High School life skills teacher Anne Salerno, the adviser of the Best Buddies Club, which has around 30 students, said the group is lucky to have Schwarz.

“Samantha is an all-around amazing kid,” Salerno said. “We’re lucky to have her as part of our club, (and) to have her as our president, because she’s just one of those kids that works really hard in everything she does (and) because she always somehow finds the time to give what she needs to give.”

Winners of the Adelis scholarships were notified the week of Nov. 13. Hewlett High guidance counselor Mary Conrad, who nominated Schwarz, broke the news to her.

“The criteria outlined for the Jim Adelis Award, which caught my eye for Sami, was, ‘in remembering Jim Adelis, we are looking for a senior that goes above and beyond in supporting the local community and making the world a better place,’” Conrad wrote in an email. “Sami truly goes above and beyond. Whether it be in the classroom with academic or technical support, in her family, in the school community as a good citizen and consummate leader, with the special needs

Schwarz was presented with the scholarship on Dec. 4 at Dee’s, in ceremony attended by members of Adelis’ family, police officers, veterans and HewlettWoodmere school district officials. Children from Hewlett Elementary School read letters that were sent

with the Christmas trees to troops.

Cathy O’Reilly, who is on the selection board for the scholarships, wrote in an email that Schwarz “embodied Jim Adelis’s legacy of giving back and simple acts of kindness.”

Schwarz, who is undecided about where she will attend college in the fall, said she would use the scholarship to help pay for it.

By Karen Bloom Move on from the holiday season with some Disney flair. The latest Disney on Ice extravaganza arrives at UBS Arena in Elmont to the continued delight of families who can’t ever get enough of their favorite Disney moments.

Audiences can relive some of the iconic characters and stories — classic and new — when “Find Your Hero” brings a lineup of some of Disney’s iconic personalities here for four days, opening Jan. 4.

This production showcases inspiring favorites from the Disney canon and their beloved tales, including those spunky royal sisters, Anna and Elsa, from the beloved mega-hit “Frozen.” Joining this spirited pair are the hilarious snowman Olaf, the forever enchanting Belle, passionate Ariel, spirited Rapunzel and the charming bandit Flynn, plucky Mirabel, the aspiring young musician Miguel, and the daring, fearless wayfarer Moana. Their courage and spunky grit to live their best lives are set forth in lively — albeit condensed — re-tellings of “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty & the Beast,” “Tangled,” “Frozen,” “Moana” and “Encanto.” ` These unforgettable characters and their adventures are brought to life on ice in a captivating show that transports the audience to world where imaginations soar and in true Disney spirit “anything can happen if you just believe.”

Guided by Mickey and Minnie, with their crew, of course these stories are told through artful skating with dynamic sets and costumes, set to the soundtrack Disneyphiles know and love.

In keeping with longstanding Disney tradition, it’s a fast-paced spectacle, with rapidly changing segments. This medley of tales shares what it means to “find the hero in all of us,” in keeping with Mouse House lore, as we all are urged to follow our dreams.

That’s certainly the case for Tess Terpos, who’s delighted to step into the spotlight with the rest of the Disney skaters as part of the ensemble cast.

It’s a magical moment — each and every time.

“Skating with Disney On Ice is a dream come true for me,” she says. “It’s so special and the connection with our audiences is amazing.”

Ice skating has pretty much always been part of Terpos’ world. Since she was 6, in fact, growing up in Maryland. After years of steadfast devotion to her craft — countless hours of practice, grueling competitions and skating in various ice shows — the now 26-year-old Terpos realized her dream when she caught her break in 2021 with Feld Entertainment, producers of Disney On Ice. Fast forward to 2024 and Terpos is an established ensemble member with the tour.

“Disney on Ice is always special, and our audiences see that ‘magic’ come to life in truly personal way.”

In fact, ‘special’ is a word that keeps coming up as Terpos describes her life on the Disney circuit.

“We all have inner heroes in ourselves,” Terpos says.

“The Disney magic is all around us.”

As with her fellow cast members, Terpos’ skating skills enhance the high level of athleticism that is the hallmark of these spectacles. Solos and fast-paced ensemble skating with high-flying jumps add to the appeal of the stories the audience knows so well.

“There are so many iconic moments,” she enthuses, especially “The Little Mermaid” segment, which is among her favorites. It’s very colorful with fun music and favorite characters.

“Actually it seems every character is a ‘favorite’ character. “And don’t forget, we ‘don’t talk about Bruno,’” Terpos reminds us.

The high-energy production brings these characters to life through the energetic skills of the skaters.

“We have a very talented cast,” Terpos says. “You’ll see pairs, singles, freestyle and tricks.”

As always, there’s plenty of singing, with the audiences up on their feet throughout the show. And, naturally, Belles, Cinderellas, Jasmines, Elsas, and now Mirabels, among many others are scattered throughout the arena.

“I even saw a Sebastian in the audience the other day,” Terpos adds. “It’s so much fun to see.”

And, of course, as anyone who knows Disney on Ice, the show is enthusiastically welcomed at every stop on the tour.

It’s big. It’s magical. It’s Disney. But it’s also something much more powerful than that.

Because when Terpos and her castmates take center stage at UBS Arena shortly — you can bet your ice skates on it — there will be more than one wide-eyed 6-year-old in the audience who will discover, for the first time in her heart, that dreams really do come true.

On exhibit Nassau County Museum of Art’s latest exhibition, “Our Gilded Age,” examines the appearances and the realities of an era that mirrors our own in many ways.

Like the nation’s economy, American art and literature flourished during the Gilded Age. The art of John Singer Sargent, Childe Hassam, Louis Comfort Tiffany and others adorned palatial residences designed

by Stanford White and Ogden Codman Jr., architect of the museum’s own quintessential Gilded Age mansion.

Drawing heavily upon the local literary history of Long Island, including William Cullen Bryant, Mark Twain (who named the Gilded Age), Walt Whitman, Edith Wharton and others, the exhibition will include paintings, fashion, decorative arts including period silver and china, photographs, manuscripts, first editions and other historic memorabilia.

The “Upstairs, Downstairs” approach to the life of a country house brings to life not only the storied conspicuous consumption for which the Gilded Age was infamous, but also the real lives of these many individuals who maintained the palatial estates where that lifestyle was enjoyed.

Pro women’s hockey coming to UBS Arena

It’s a new era of ice hockey, and it’s coming to UBS Arena.

The Professional Women’s Hockey League makes its debut this month, kicking off 72 games played across eight different venues between the league’s “original six” franchise teams — Boston, Minnesota, Montreal, New York, Ottawa and Toronto.

And one of those venues happen to be the same place where fans also can find the New York Islanders in Belmont.

“We are extremely pleased to be welcoming the PWHL to UBS Arena during their inaugural season,” Kim Stone, the president of UBS Arena, said in a release. “I’m proud that women’s hockey is getting a beautiful new building to call its home for a number of games during this historical moment in women’s sports history.”

The New York roster boasts 26 of the top women hockey players from around the world. Chief among them is Alex Carpenter, a 29-year-old forward from North Reading, Massachusetts, who is arguably one of the most skilled in the game today. She won two Olympic silver medals for her performance with Team USA, and is a six-time International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s world champion.

The UBS Arena at Belmont Park will serve as the home turf for the Professional Women’s Hockey League’s New York team for at least four games during its inaugural season. alongside Carpenter, and will now join her on the roster in New York. The 26-year-old hockey star from Michigan made history as the first indigenous hockey player to compete in the Olympics, and led the University of Michigan to a national championship in 2019.

She also finished the 2020 season as one of the Top 10 scorers in the NCAA. Micah Zandee-Hart will lead the

backcheck as one of the top tier defensive players in the league. The 26-yearold Canadian was formerly a co-captain of the Cornell University hockey team, making her the second sophomore in the program’s history to wear the “C.” She was also the first player in her province to take home the gold medal for Team Canada at the 2022 Winter Olympics.

“Having the privilege to showcase our skills in front of dedicated fans, in a top-tier arena, represents an opportunity that impeccably aligns with the professional standards upheld by the PWHL,” Pascal Daoust, general manager of the PWHL New York franchise, said. “It promises to be a premier sports experience not only for our athletes, but also for our fans, allowing them to gather in g reater numbers and take immense pride in standing united behind our team.”

Four of the PWHL New York team’s 12 regular season home games will take place at UBS Arena, and at least five of the remaining home games are scheduled to take place at the Total Mortgage Arena in Connecticut.

The schedule was constructed to ensure all six teams will play head-tohead a minimum of four times throughout the regular season, including twice at home and twice on the road. It also includes a pause in February for the PWHL 3-on-3 Showcase at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto during the NHL AllStar event, and a break in April for the IIHF Women’s World Championship.

Playoffs begin the week of May 6.

Single-game tickets range between $17 and $47, and are available through Ticketmaster.com. Season ticket membership and half-season plans are also available online via NewYork.ThePWHL.com.

LEGAL NOTICE RESOLUTION WOODMERE FIRE DISTRICT PURCHASE OF ROOF RENOVATION AT HEADQUARTERS BUILDING AND LETTING PROJECT AS AN EMERGENCY PURCHASE WHEREAS, the WOODMERE FIRE DISTRICT has by appropriate resolution established a certain capital reserve fund designated as the Capital Reserve Fund, established pursuant to Section 6(g) of the General Municipal Law, in an account for deposit of said Capital Reserve Fund entitled, “The Woodmere Fire District, Section 6(g) General Municipal Law Building and Grounds Fund” in local banks; and WHEREAS, the purchase of Renovations to the Roof at the Headquarters Building is deemed necessary to meet the emergency services needs of the residents of the WOODMERE FIRE DISTRICT; and WHEREAS, the maximum cost to obtain such Renovations to the Roof at the Headquarters Building (labor, materials, and delivery), including incidental expenses, advertising, architectural, engineering, consulting and attorney’s fees is estimated to be TWO HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND ($250,000.00) DOLLARS; and WHEREAS, the Board of Fire Commissioners has also determined that a public emergency arising out of an accident or other unforeseen occurrence or condition whereby circumstances affecting public buildings, public property or the life, health, safety or property of the inhabitants of the said Fire District, requires immediate action which cannot await competitive bidding or compliance with the multiple request for proposal process of the district procurement policy for purchases below the statutory competitive bidding threshold; and WHEREAS, the circumstances of such public emergency are as follows: that the roof is leaking in a number of places and extreme recent rain events have resulted in more serious leaks and damage to the building and that areas of the roof need to immediately be replaced; and WHEREAS, the Board is authorized under Section 103 Subparagraph 4 of the General Municipal Law to make emergency purchases without competitive bidding when a public emergency requires such action, and can exercise similar discretion under its purchasing and procurement policy, and IT IS RESOLVED that pursuant to the laws and

regulations applicable and in particular to Section 6(g) of the General Municipal Law, that the purchase of such Renovations to the Roof at the Headquarters Building be completed and that the cost and expenses for such purchase, incidental expenses, advertising, architectural, engineering, consulting and attorney’s fees shall be expended from the Building and Grounds Capital Reserve Fund upon authorization of the Board of Fire Commissioners, at the maximum estimated cost of TWO HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND ($250,000.00) DOLLARS; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution is subject to a permissive referendum as provided for in Section 6(g) of the General Municipal Law; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Fire Commissioners shall authorize the emergency purchase and installation of the roof renovation and replacement based upon the budget set aside in this resolution; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board shall dispense with competitive bidding in accordance with the authority vested in it under Section 103 Subparagraph 4 of the General Municipal Law, and compliance with the multiple request for proposal process of the district procurement policy for purchases below the statutory competitive bidding threshold, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the District staff shall proceed with all haste to complete the aforementioned purchase and assist in resolving the public emergency addressed thereby, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the District staff shall report to the Board on the progress of the aforementioned purchase contract.

Hewlett High chorus’s ‘Premier ‘holiday performance Singing “Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly,” “Jungle Bells” and several Hanukkah songs, the Hewlett High School chorus brought holiday cheer to the residents of the Five Towns Premier Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Woodmere on Dec. 20.

The student crooners performed several tunes on the third floor, and then walked through the hallways singing on each of the floors for bedridden residents.

Premier officials said that it was a moving experience for the residents and students, and many residents were brought to tears.

A family member named Annie cried when she heard her father’s favorite song, which is “Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly.” For privacy, Annie didn’t want her last name used.

Andrew Fund, the Hewlett-Woodmere school district’s director of art music, noted that everyone involved from the high school gained an “understanding what it means to live life to its fullest and using music to spread joy,” in an email to Premier.

A. I was once called on to do the home of a dean of an architecture school. I told him I was flattered, and asked why, considering the fact that I wasn’t a graduate of his school, he chose me. He told me that he had started out with one of his former graduates and was completely dissatisfied with the results. The former student, he said, did onte eeper eventually become an architect, but lacked basic skills like engineering, math and the sensitivity to bring the dean’s ideas to fruition.

Then I asked why the dean wasn’t designing his own home, especially being the figurehead of an architecture school, and supposedly well versed enough to have such a prestigious job. He told me he barely passed the licensing exams after his third try, and was actually a graduate in architectural history, even though he managed to get through an architecture school.

That really made me wonder, since I had worked with over 40 of his students at my firm over the years, but none who lasted, most going on to pursue related work, like construction management or as draftspersons in other firms. In other words, there are areas of the field that do not include being the “conductor of the orchestra” but consider that not everyone in the field eventually becomes an architect, but instead many play supporting rather than lead roles at a firm. Also consider that most leave school with little understanding that, like most fields, architecture is a business.

The art part is one facet that makes the presentation aspect seem romantic, and is probably most represented in films and TV shows, but really constitutes about 2 percent of the big picture. I chuckle when I see a TV show on which there are lots of models and pretty renderings of buildings, because the nuts and bolts are what makes the engine run, and the government reviews and approvals, at some point, dominates the process until we get to the act of making a building real, in the construction phase.

Math, at every part of the process, is important, whether it’s the engineering, the assembly of parts, the communication with all the members of the team or getting the building approved for construction. If your son would be satisfied being a team member and not a team leader, then he should pursue this career. Otherwise, good luck!

ith the old year having ended and the New Year just beginning, I’m once again going through my routine of looking back on the previous year’s memories and trying to anticipate what the next one might hold.

On balance, 2023 was a good year for me. There were some twists and turns and bumps in the road, but overall I can’t complain.

For starters, in the very first week of the year, I crossed paths with Stuart Richner, the publisher of the Heralds, who offered me the opportunity pETER to write a column for the papers. I KinG was smart enough to accept, and it’s been a challenging and rewarding experience for me ever since.

A few months later, with no warning signs or symptoms and during a routine procedure, my gastroenterologist, Dr. Michael Barth, detected a tumor in my

stomach, which turned out to be malignant. A few weeks after that, Dr. Matthew Weiss, a skilled surgeon at Long Island Jewish Hospital, removed the tumor, and there was no follow-up radiation or chemotherapy required. I was out of the hospital in days, and back at full speed in a few weeks.

Then, in June and September, I made two very positive visits to Capitol Hill, where I had the privilege of serving for 28 years. In June, the House Intelligence Committee asked me, along with several former members, including Frank LoBiondo, of New Jersey, and Jane Harman, of California, to testify about pressing terror threats, and then, in September, more than 40 of my former staff members held a reception for my wife, Rosemary, and I on the Speaker’s Balcony. Both events brought back very positive memories.

During that time, but especially in September and October, I worked close-

ly with Nassau County Republican Party Chairman Joe Cairo and county Republicans to bring about the overwhelming victories we saw on Election Day. They resulted in part because of the series of misjudgments and poor policy decisions by Democratic leaders in New York and Washington — the most prominent being the inability to deal with outof-control illegal migration, which made its way to the western edge of Nassau County.

Entering 2024, I hope for continued good health for Rosemary and our family and friends — and a return to good health for our state and nation. The presidential race will be like no other, with the nation so divided and the problems so severe, with wars in Ukraine and Israel becoming more deadly by the day and threats from Iran and China showing no signs of lessening.

For progress to be made on any of these fronts in this new year, I strongly believe that the American people must

find a way to put aside blind partisanship and forge a united front on issues on which there can be agreement and honest debate when consensus can’t be reached.

The most obvious need for concerted action is border security. New York City cannot continue to absorb 4,000 illegal migrants each week without bursting.

Similarly, the rise in antisemitism is truly frightening. Our political, religious and education leaders must speak with one voice in proclaiming that “Never Again” means Never Again!

Similarly, respect for law enforcement must be restored if we are to be safe in our homes and neighborhoods.

While victories cannot be guaranteed on all, or even most, fronts in 2024, real progress can be made if we remember that America is still the world’s greatest nation and we live up to our standards as Americans. If we do, this will indeed be a year we will all be proud to remember.

Two legislators who are making a difference

he year just finished wasn’t a good one for politicians, or politics in general. We have two wars, an inept majority in the House of Representatives, an up-anddown economy and the prospect of having two candidates for president who are both highly unpopular. But rather than begin the new year on a down note, I would like to focus on two elected officials who have gained my greatest respect.

Most voters don’t talk about state legislators over dinner. Legislators don’t get JERRY much publicity, KREMER but quite a few of them work diligently throughout the year and deserve a pat on the back. Being a former state assemblyman, I can recognize the qualities make a good legislator.

Which is why I want to single out Democratic Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages and Republican Assemblyman Ed Ra. I had the good fortune recently to have lunch with Solages — who prefers

the nickname Mickey — and walked away impressed with her work and her dedication to lots of good causes. She is serving her fifth term representing a very diverse community stretching from Valley Stream to Bellerose. She is the first person of Haitian descent to be elected to the State Legislature, and her hard work on behalf of minorities has vaulted her into the position of chair of the state Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus.

Being the chair of this caucus isn’t an easy job. It is a very powerful group in Albany, and it only chooses true leaders to make it an effective force in a sometimes very divided legislative body. Solages keeps the group focused, and is very articulate on caucus issues. She holds the title of Assembly deputy majority leader, and in that role she is responsible for rounding up votes during floor debates.

I was very impressed with her dedication to finding affordable housing opportunities on Long Island. It’s no secret that our young people are leaving the Island, because it costs too much to live here, and they don’t want to live at

home with their parents.

In the Assembly, Solages is a major voice speaking out about improving access to quality child care. Working mothers need a strong advocate to help get state funds, and she is at the forefront of that effort.

Having been the chair of the Assembly Ways and Means Committee, I have strong feelings about the role of the committee and its effectiveness. Assemblyman Ra holds the title of ranking member on Ways and Means, which makes him his party’s voice during deliberations on key bills. Over the course of the year, Ways and Means members have the chance to vote on as many as 5,000 bills, so being a committee member is a big deal.

Ra has proven to be an informed voice on a variety of issues, and he has become the suburban voice for his fellow Republican Assembly members.

One of his major interests has been education initiatives. He has fought for a more stringent teacher evaluation system, and has become a vocal supporter of special education programs of the kind offered by the Henry Viscardi

ighlighting the hard work of Michaelle Solages and Ed Ra.

School in Albertson. Ra has gotten more state funding for these efforts by getting the state to institute a fairer reimbursement system.

One of the assignments that he has handled with class is the job of assistant minority leader. The position requires him to be familiar with almost every bill slated for debate, and to make strong arguments pro or con. There’s no way that a floor leader can wing it when the arguments start flying. Ra has shown an encyclopedic knowledge of multiple issues.

It’s nice to have a chance to highlight the hard work of two very effective Long Island legislators. There are many others, but Mickey Solages and Ed Ra stand out in many ways. I wish I could also applaud our members of Congress, but they’re under constant pressure from the crazy Freedom Caucus to impeach President Biden. The current House has passed the fewest bills in memory, and Long Island needs a little more attention.

Entering a new year, one page at a time

C

ongratulations — you’ve made it to another new year. When we make resolutions we know we can’t keep, and spend the next six months scribbling out “2023” and replacing it with “2024.”

Bill Vaughan, a longtime syndicated columnist for the Kansas City Star in the 1960s and ’70s, said it best: “An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.”

But as a reader of community news — which you are, of course, since you’re reading these words — you’re more likely to be an optimist than a pessimist. So it’s not about saying goodbye to what was, but instead, looking forward to what happens next.

That’s what your neighborhood newspaper is all about, and why you continue to look forward to it every week. But it’s more than just the local news. It’s your town square. It’s a place for you to share your stories. Cheer your achievements.

And even express concerns, typically coupled with solutions to make life better.

Your local newspaper is where you learn about those running for office who want to represent you in government.

Where you learn about meetings happening in your neighborhood that you should be a part of. And where you learn how to be a part of the decision-making process.

And, of course, your local newspaper is about supporting local businesses, because they are the backbone of anything we build. They are a source of jobs, tax revenue, and everything we need to maintain happy homes, schools and workplaces.

The pages of the Herald are where we got to meet Rabbi Aaron Marsh, the new leader of East Meadow Beth-El Jewish Center. It’s where we learned about Alex Kremins of Long Beach, who literally gave the gift of life, by way of a bone marrow transplant, to a teenager in Washington state who has leukemia.

We celebrated 127 years of Jewish War Veterans, the nation’s longest-operating veterans organization, through its Rockville Centre-based chapter, and learned that it’s a group that only wants to grow.

And we said goodbye to Helen Dolan, the “quiet philanthropist” and the former owner of the Oyster Bay Guardian, which is now the Oyster Bay Herald.

In the pages of your local newspaper, you read local coverage of national and international events that you couldn’t find anywhere else. We’ve heard so much about the tragic terrorist attack in Israel on Oct. 6, but it was the Herald that detailed the long, empty table of plates and silverware set up by Young Israel of Woodmere to honor and remember the hostages taken by Hamas.

And then there was George Santos, the disgraced former congressman, who

These annual visits provide him with a better understanding of the needs for residents of each county.

But when was the last time he visited our country’s southern border? He could view firsthand our ongoing invasion of illegal immigrants. When will he visit the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan, or Floyd Bennett Field in his home borough of Kings County, which are now migrant shelters?

The number of illegal migrants will likely exceed 2 million for the third year in a row in 2024.

Schumer could also learn from border agents about their fight to stem the smuggling of fentanyl, which is killing over 100,000 Americans every year. When will Schumer travel to El Paso, Texas, and observe this crisis firsthand? Perhaps that would convince him to stop holding up funding for the completion

MAGA superstar Elise Stefanik, of New York’s 21st District, made mincemeat out of Ivy League college Presidents Claudine Gay of Harvard, Liz Magill of the University of Pennsylvania, and Sally Kornbluth of MIT. While each denounced antisemitism during over three hours of testimony, when asked directly if hypothetical threats of genocide violated university codes of conduct, all three prevaricated, trying to explain that aLan j. it depended on “context.” singer Following the hearing, U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx, who chairs the House Education Committee, announced a congressional investigation into the three schools to examine their disciplinary policies and learning environments. A letter signed by 74 members of Congress demanded that the governing boards at Harvard, Penn and MIT remove the presidents. Magill was the first to fall, resigning as university president on Dec. 9. Scott L. Bok, the chair of Penn’s board of trustees, also resigned.

The three presidents prepared for the hearing with a law firm, WilmerHale,

that specializes in testimony before Congress. That was clearly a mistake. While preparing for congressional testimony must include legal knowledge, it also requires political savvy and common sense, what my Eastern European Jewish grandparents call tseykhl, or street smarts, something lacking in the three presidents. All three have since apologized for their poor performance at the hearing, but face demands from alumni and donors that they resign or be fired.

Magill, a lawyer, tried to explain to the committee that Penn’s code of conduct ensures “the right to freedom of thought and expression.” What she should have stressed was that the code also insists that students “exhibit responsible behavior regardless of time or place. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action by the University.”

Responsible behavior includes respecting the health and safety of others. This precludes acts or threats of physical violence against another person (including sexual violence) and disorderly conduct. So, yes, advocating genocide against a group of people, Jews or anyone else, is a threat of physical violence, and violates the code of conduct.

Lower the revenue projections for congestion pricing To the Editor: I recommend that congestion pricing legislation be amended to remove the projection of $1 billion in toll revenue. There should not be any minimum mandatory revenue amount, which would allow a much more affordable toll, instead of $15.

London collects much less revenue with its Congestion Charge, and requiring $1 billion in yearly revenue is arbitrary and regressive.

Harassment is defined as unwelcome conduct of a verbal, nonverbal or physical nature that is sufficiently severe or pervasive to create a work or academic

our communities. Nearly 350,000 American teenagers under age 18 become pregnant each year, and about 31 percent of those pregnancies end up being aborted.

The after-effect of these procedures is a significant amount of psychological damage among the patients.

These adolescents are left having to deal with not only society’s public shame, but also emotional distress and minimal support.

Many of them struggle with PTSD, heightened anxiety and depression. As a community, we have to bring comfort and support to these adolescents in need, and make help more accessible and accepted.

If the community doesn’t play its part in fixing such an issue, that leads to lasting emotional consequences. Consequences like self-harm or even suicide.

But it’s not too late to do something about it. Allow us to bring awareness to these struggles. Allow for resources to be easier to obtain for these kids. Or simply just show the community’s support through fundraisers, and raise money to help families struggling with this issue.

During the congressional questioning, Stefanik demanded to know whether Harvard had rescinded the admission of students who chanted, “From the river to the sea!” a slogan identified with calls for a Palestinian state that would include territory that is now Israel. Stefanik was clearly unaware that extremist Israeli settlers in the West Bank have made a similar demand for the removal of Palestinians.

Criticism of Israeli actions in Gaza following the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas has been heated on many American campuses, and in response, the House of Representatives passed a resolution equating anti-Zionism with antisemitism. Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a Democrat from New York City and the longest-serving Jewish member of the House, refused to vote for it. According to Nadler, “Under this resolution, those who love Israel deeply but criticize some of its policy approaches could be considered anti-Zionist. That could make every Democratic Jewish member of this body, because they all criticized the recent Israeli judicial reform package, de facto antisemites.”
