Merrick Ave student taps into many styles for his ‘stress-relieving’ work

Art has always been a passion for Joseph Solorzano-Ruiz.

The Merrick Avenue Middle School seventh-grade student has left an impact on many — his parents, his teachers and even the school district — with his many creations. He has won a handful of awards this year alone, and his love of art, and his talent, are still developing.

An avid drawer, painter and sculptor, Joseph, 13, is fond of blending various media on the way to a finished project. “I started just in notebooks — just sketching,” Joseph said. “But my brother, he started to really get into art, and I basically followed in his footsteps.”

Gary, 19, a 2021 graduate of Sanford H. Calhoun High School, is now studying art at Adelphi University. “I really learned a lot from him,” Joseph said of his brother.

“It carried down to me.”

While he said he likes a lot of different styles, his favorite is realism. “A lot of people say it’s just copying stuff down,” Joseph said.

“But if someone asks me to draw a picture, one thing that I’ve noticed is that if they say, ‘Oh, what do you Continued on page 4

Mule partners with Girl Scouts to send cookies to military Nassau County Legislator Debra Mulé joined the Girl Scouts of Nassau County, local law enforcement and community leaders, enthusiastic volunteers, and her colleagues in local gover nment on Wednesday, May 11 to initiate the shipping of more than 80,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to American military bases around the world as part of “Operation Cookie.”

As part of their effort to provide military members a taste of home, local Girl Scout troops have been collecting donations from their customers since December 2021. Each year, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County partner with DHL

Express to get the cookies they gathered to our troops. In addition, the Girl Scouts provide local first responders with their signature cookies as a token of appreciation for all that they do daily.

“Each year, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County harness the generosity of our community to bring comfort to servicemembers and first responders through their ‘Operation - Cookie’ campaign,” Mulé said. “It was a pleasure to lend a hand with loading the trucks that will soon deliver smiles to people who do so much to keep us safe on a daily basis.”

The girls were excited to enjoy the warm springtime weather, and do their part to help keep the planet both healthy and beautiful.

A drive past the Harold D. Fayette School on Merrick Avenue in North Merrick will leave residents in awe over the large, beautiful field of American flags completely covering the front school yard.

North Merrick Union Free School District’s Field of Flag ceremony, ahead of Memorial Day, served as a reminder for students, parents and additional attendees to remember those who have died defending the United States, and to uphold values of Americanism and patriotism.

The ceremony, which was attended by leaders in the school district, American Legion Post 1282, local politicians, Fayette’s school band, and student council members, was kicked off with the Pledge of Allegiance, read by Superintendent Cynthia Seniuk.

“It’s truly amazing, the feeling, standing here and looking and seeing all the smiles on everyone’s faces with the flags behind you,” Seniuk said after the pledge.

“Our field of flags commemorates both Memorial Day and Flag Day.” This year’s field of flags was hosted by

the student council at Fayette, and their advisor. Included in the display was a special September 11 flag, honoring all the people who lost their lives, and continue to suffer from long term 9/11-related illnesses. All proceeds from the flag sponsorships, Seniuk said, will directly benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.

Following a performance by the band, which played “Marching Marines,” and speeches made by the student council, the American Legion thanked the school district for having them attend.

“I would like to thank the North Merrick school district, all the students, teachers and administrators in the three schools in the district, and all the parents and children that stayed here and thought that this ceremony was that important,” Post Commander Robert Dishman said.

Speaking on locations that reminded him of the American flag, Dishman told the crowd about Fort McHenry, where the Star Spangled Banner was written, and Arlington National Cemetery.

“If you haven’t [gone], you should go,” Dishman said of Arlington. “… because in Arlington, there’s over 400,000 reasons why you should stand for the American

She added that Joseph keeps progress reports on his work, so he can gauge his growth as an artist. “I can’t imagine him pursing a lifestyle that doesn’t include art,” she said. “He does really advanced stuff at home. Next year he’ll be able to enter a cultural arts award competition.

He deserves everything that is coming to him.”

Though he’s just getting started, Joseph said that a dream job would be to work in the movie industry, designing sculptures or anything art-related for movie sets. Art, he added, is a form of therapy.

Jen Calonita gets ready to release new books newsroom@liherald.com

Everybody has their own reasons for doing what they do, but for Calonita, it’s always been about storytelling, and creating stories that children can get lost in.

“I’ve had the privilege of working on Disney books as well, and expanding wellk n ow n ch a r a c t e r s ’ wo rl d s, ” s h e explained. “It’s so much fun to see how excited Disney fans get when hear what you’ve done to the world of Frozen, or Hercules, or Tangled.”

As a mom with school-age kids, Calonita’s day is often filled with shuttling her boys to after school activities, but while the kids are at school, Calonita gets most of her writing time in. “I generally write during school hours, either at home with my chihuahua Ben Kenobi by my side, or when I’m feeling restless, you’ll find me at RS Beanery in town,” she said. Calonita has had past opportunities to speak at schools and share her love of writing and books. Unfortunately, she had to put those visits on pause in the last two years, but she said “it’s nice to get back out there and see students and readers in person again.”

Last year, Calonita became a New York Times best seller for her series, A Twisted Tale, as well as a USA Today best seller, which have been lifelong goals. She would love the opportunity to expand her career beyond the written word, eventually hoping to see some of her characters on the big screen.

Kennedy boys’ lacrosse is looking to put the finishing touches on what has been a solid 2022 campaign.

With two games left in the regular season, the Cougars are looking to get healthy and tinker with a few things to be at their best for the postseason. However, looking back on the year, coach Craig Papach said he’s proud of how his team has dealt with several obstacles.

“We’re very pleased with how the season has gone,” Papach said. “We have a lot of new guys and we’re still in the rebuilding mode. We’re definitely happy with the way things have gone so far. Before the year, we set goals that didn’t involve winning or losing. I wanted to create guys that wanted to play lacrosse and I think we’re doing that.”

In a way, the Cougars’ year has been a tale of two halves. They were 5-1 until senior attackmen Max Zaransky broke his hand against Baldwin, and at the time he was the leading scorer in Nassau County.

Papach noted that depth was not necessarily a strong suit, so it was an adjustment period heading into what was a tough portion of the schedule. It is difficult to adjust an entire offensive identity on the fly, but other players have stepped up.

Junior Joseph Battaglia has become the go-to guy on offense and has handled the increased responsibility well and junior Liam Schillinger has also been efficient in the midfield. Junior Dylan Estrin has also picked up the scoring.

In many ways, the Cougars relied on their defensive unit to pick up the slack, and the group was up to the task. Junior goalie Benjamin Greco has been lights-out in the net all spring, and his character has matched his play level, as according to Papach he has been “a class act and has been a super goaltender the entire season.”

Sophomore Finn Lofton has become the main option the clearing game and has done exceptional considering his assignment is covering the opposition’s best player. Junior Richie Ippoliti Is relatively new to the faceoff position, but through his competitive nature he has been adept in

The Cougars have an 8-5 record and have all but wrapped up a place in the Nassau Class B playoffs. With Zaransky having a chance to return for the playoffs, they could make some noise down the stretch, but however things go Papach is proud of how his unit has played and grown this season.

“This has been a successful season,” Papach said. “If we can finish with 9 or 10 wins it’s an incredible accomplishment.

We never really judge the seasons off wins and losses anyhow as we have great kids who work hard and that’s really what matters. Going forward, we’re still trying to figure out our best offensive groupings but we’re still going to try and figure things out going into the playoffs.”

Task force set to explore antisemitism surge Will host public discussions, suggest legislation

Nassau County officials have created a special legislative task force to combat antisemitism and, immediately after being sworn in, went right to work.

Made up of eight legislators — four from each political caucus — as well as 18 members of the public, the task force is tasked to gather facts about the origins and extent of antisemitism in the county while working toward prevention methods like education and community collaboration.

The commission has a number of tasks before it, said County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who is part of the task force.

“What is the cause of antisemitism? How do we educate people? How do we liaison with the police department when a hate crime occurs?” Blakeman told the task force after they were sworn in. “These are just some of the things that you’ll be tackling here in this commission, and it’s important work.”

The task force is expected to host public hearings before developing a report filled with recommendations to the county legislature to combat antisemitism.

“We are living in a polarized time,” said Rabbi Eli Weinstock of the Jewish Center of Atlantic Beach, who chairs the task force. That time “has seen the rise of hate speech, which has seen a dramatic rise in antisemitic acts. A large proportion of hate crimes, overall, are antisemitic in nature. We’re here and we’re tasked to try and find mechanisms and ways to combat that.”

A 27-peRSon SpecIAL legislative task force is expected to research and ultimately recommend prevention methods in the hopes of combatting antisemitism in Nassau County.

The task force plans to host a virtual youth roundtable targeting antisemitism with a focus on how the law and public policy can help diminish bias and insensitivity.

The initiative to create the task force was spearheaded last summer by Plainview legislator Arnold Drucker. A bill establishing the task force was adopted unanimously by the County Legislature last August, and amended this year.

“It was clear that the need for action was urgent,”

Drucker said in a statement. In an audit of antisemitic incidents, last year, reported antisemitic incidents jumped 34 percent compared to 2020, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

“Now is the time to roll up our sleeves and work collaboratively with residents and community leaders,” Drucker said, “to devise and enact meaningful, enduring legislation that will strike directly at the fetid sources of antisemitism in our county.”

Nassau County cemented its relationship with Israel last week, signing an economic and cultural agreement with the Shomron.

It’s an area in the northern part of an Israeli territory commonly referred to as the West Bank, or Judea and Samaria.

“This is an agreement of friendship, understanding and solidarity,” Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman proclaimed during a ceremony in Mineola.

Blakeman’s Israeli counterpart, Shomron Regional Council chair Yossi Dagan, says his region has been the Jewish heartland since the days of the religion’s forefathers and prophets.

Mazi Melesa Pilip, a Great Neck-based legislator and a former Israeli Defense Forces paratrooper who emigrated to the Jewish state from Ethiopia during Operation Solomon in 1991, said the agreement would “continue an important and meaningful partnership and friendship based on social, economic, security and cultural” links.

“This event perfectly exemplifies the beautiful relationship between Israel and America,” Assemblyman Ari Brown said.

At a time “when people are trying to put a wedge between us, the county executive brings us together.”

In fact, that’s an aspect that sometimes gets lost, said Davidi Ben Zion, deputy head of the Samaria Regional Council.

Dov Hikind, the firebrand former Assemblyman from Boro Park, applauded what he called Blakeman’s leadership in joining with Israel.

“We are united with the people of Israel, and we are united with the communities — not ‘settlements’ — in Judea and Samaria,” Hikind said. “These are mag-

nificent cities with the most special people.”

Yet, it takes more than simply saying, “I support Israel,” the onetime lawmaker said, although it’s “a good start.”

“But this is called action,” Hikind said.

“This is called doing something real. You are saying to over half a million people in Judea and Samaria, ‘You are not alone.

We the people of Long Island — of America — we are with you.’”

Judea and Samaria is a subject of international controversy, with some referring to it as “occupied territory,” where development by Israel violates international law. Others maintain Israel is acting legally.

Blakeman, who’s visited the Shomron, described the area as critically situated relative to the rest of the country.

“It’s the high ground overlooking the Tel Aviv airport,” he said. “To give away that strategic area would put all of Israel in danger.”

Meanwhile, Israeli development there boosts everyone.

“What you won’t hear in the media is how many Palestinian Arabs are employed in Judea and Samaria in the factories, earning three times what they would if they were in the Palestinian Authority areas,” Blakeman said, explaining that Israelis “are providing a lot of economic opportunity for their Palestinian neighbors as well as for Israelis.”

While Judea was not represented at Thursday’s event, Blakeman — whose wife is Israeli — emphasized his support for them as well. Blakeman highlighted his latest personal link to the Jewish state, introducing his daughter, Ariel, a student at Bar-Ilan University near Tel Aviv. Just last week, he announced Ariel’s engagement to a former defense forces paratrooper.

In 2016, the Town of Hempstead proclaimed the Region of Shomron a “sister municipality.” Blakeman, a Hempstead councilman at the time, said then that “they are truly on the front lines.”

Students selected for Juried Art Exhibition Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s John F. Kennedy High School artists Sean Mascaro and Michael Papazis were chosen for the prestigious annual Heckscher Museum’s Long Island’s Best exhibition.

Both are featured in Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at T he Heckscher Museum, which is the only juried exhibition on Long Island that offers high school students the opportunity to show their work in a museum.

Along with the honor of being chosen for the exhibit, Mascaro received the Renzo & Lynette Bianchi Scholarship Award and a Huntington Fine Arts honorable mention for his sculpture “Visual Deception.”

Mascaro’s art teacher is Carissa Roche and Papazis’ is Vanessa Albaneze.

“We are so proud of the extraordinary work by these

young artists,” said Cheryl Fontana, the district’s director of the fine & performing arts.

“It’s always wonderful to see our young artists being recognized for their work. Being selected to this prestigious exhibit not only highlights their incredible talent but also their commitment and dedication to art. We are truly proud of Sean and Michael for this accomplishment.”

Students were challenged to create works of art inspired by a piece they viewed at the museum. The museum chose 79 students this year from 399 entries from 55 high schools.

Officials: Shortage of baby formula avoidable

Under a spring sky soft with the threat of rain in the air, Don Clavin joined fellow government officials and parents demanding Congress push much harder to alleviate the current national shortage of baby and medical formula.

“It’s the role of the federal government to step in at a time of need,” said Clavin, Town of Hempstead’s supervisor. “It’s disgraceful that we have to do this because the federal government have been sitting on their hands.”

Clavin called on President Joe Biden to use the Defense Production Act to direct federal funds to boost formula production.

The same act — a Cold War relic designed to use Washington resources to jump start private sector production during war and emergencies — was also used during the coronavirus pandemic to step up the manufacture of ventilators and other equipment intended to combat Covid-19.

The formula crisis stems from a pandemic-fueled nationwide supply chain and labor shortage that’s affecting a number of economic sectors. But it became even more critical after Abbott, a major formula manufacturer that produces the Similac baby formula brand, shut down its factory in Sturgis, Michigan, after reported safety issues with its products. Four infants in Minnesota, Texas and Ohio were hospitalized with bacterial infections. Two died.

At the news conference, Councilwoman Melissa Miller gestured toward her 22-year-old son Oliver, who sat in his wheelchair beside the podium. Oliver had a stroke prior to birth that affected his brain stem and left him with multiple disabilities.

“This shortage is more than just baby formula, which in itself is a crisis and needs to be addressed,” Miller said. “But in fact, millions of children and adults that have dietary special needs, their medical formulas are included in this shortage.”

Oliver has never been able to eat regu-

lar food. He relies completely on medical formula to live.

“When the formula recall happened, there was no communication to parents with baby formula or communications with parents of special need individuals, or adults with special medical nutrition needs,” Miller said. “I found out on a Facebook trading group for special needs equipment. I went and looked (at the lot numbers stamped on the canisters of formula): Every single case of formula that I had was part of the recalled lot.”

Miller’s online search for formula in February finally turned up four canisters of formula powder for $175. Now the same

four canisters on Amazon’s Canada site cost $315.

One strategy to keep Oliver supplied was to switch formulas, Miller said. But babies and medically needy adults don’t tolerate every type of formula. Switching formulas often causes diarrhea and other digestive disruptions, possibly leading to hospitalization.

John Caputo joined others the news conference because his daughter, like Oliver, needs a particular formula.

“Switching formula could mean days in the hospital,” the Lynbrook resident said. “I would urge everybody, parents — anybody else who takes care of someone with special needs — to reach out to your people in our local governments..”

Liquid infant formulas produced by Abbott were not affected by the recall.

A senior White House administrative official said at a May 12 White House news conference that the federal government has actually done a lot to get formula back on grocery shelves since the Feb. 17 product recall.

One national survey found more than 40 percent of retailers across the country were out of stock when it comes to formula, according to NPR. Yet, these actions should have happened months ago, Clavin said, urging constituents to call their representatives.

“That’s when you see the most reaction,” he said, “when people get together and make the phone calls and ask for action.”

Alternative energy blows in with future at stake

There are certainly some advantages to living on an island — advantages Matt Cohen says Long Island doesn’t exploit enough. Especially when it comes to alternative energy sources like offshore wind.

“We’re an island,” Cohen, president of the Long Island Association, told a roundtable discussion in Melville last week.

“We’re surrounded by water. Iowa and Nebraska may not be able to do this, but we can. We’re in position to take advantage of it.”

Cohen brought together small business owners as well as representatives from four leading wind developers — Ørsted/ Eversource, Equinor, Community Offshore Wind and Attentive Energy — hoping they might find some synergies as part of several intimate 15-minute “speed-dating” style meetings.

Harrison Feuer, the New York-based spokesman for Norwegian petroleum company Equinor, called the association’s roundtable “inspiring.”

“There were so many people interested in this growing industry on Long Island and eager to see where they could learn more,” he said. “They want to get involved to help this industry grow, and the conversation in general was a great opportunity to connect with the folks on the ground and see how much support there is for offshore wind.”

It’s also a great opportunity to help develop new career paths, said Marjaneh Issapour, an associate dean focused on sustainable energy at Farmingdale State College.

“I’m here as an educator interested in the business and looking for possible employment pathways for our graduates,” she said. “The most exciting thing about this is mainly just that the fact that it’s actually happening now, and that it’s a realization. We’ve been talking about it for so long, and now we actually have a few projects in the pipeline. And that is great news for the local economy.” Ørsted’s roots are in fossil fuels, but the Danish company — named for scientist Hans Christian Ørsted — has since moved completely to renewable energy. It has joined with Connecticut-based offshore wind company Eversource on a pair of major projects in the region, including the South Fork Wind Farm — a dozen turbines spinning offshore 30 miles east of Montauk.

Construction on those turbines start and finish next year, according to Grant van Wyngaarden, who heads offshore procurement in North America for Ørsted.

It’s expected to deliver enough electricity to power more than 100,000 homes.

Sunrise Wind, expected to be constructed nearby in 2024, will be a much larger project with more than 80 turbines.

that it won during a recent auction hosted by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, according to company spokeswoman Alanna Russo.

“This is something we’ve thought about for many years, and we’re very excited, but we’re still in our infancy stage of developing our project,” she said.

“We’re doing site surveys, environmental assessment, and engaging with stakeholders, and hopefully it will be completed by the end of decade.”

For Jamie Shellenberger-Bessman, who represents the Attentive Energy subsidiary of France’s TotalEnergies Renewables, says her role is more about education — not just of Attentive Energy’s work, but renewable energy in general.

ALANNA RussO, thE strategic engagement director for Community Offshore Wind — which is developing a seabed lease in the New York Bight — says they hope to get some of its wind energy projects off the ground and running by the end of the decade.

“I have conversations every day with people who don’t even know what an offshore wind farm is and the massive opportunity that’s out there,” she said. “So, it’s just about making sure we’re making those connections. We believe the younger generation is the future because it’s the people in junior high and high school right now who are going to be building these things, so we’re looking to make connections there.”

The Ocean Energy Management bureau auctioned off six leases last February in the Bight for $4.4 billion, including $795 million from Attentive Energy. The leases include more than 460,000 leasable acres with the hopes of producing enough energy for nearly 2 million homes.

unbelievable,” he said. “People came in for the love of the music at first, and then all of a sudden they became friends. There’s bonds that have been made here, and it’s sad that it’s closing down.

“Life goes on, no matter what,” he added. “They’ll never lose the friendships. It might be in a different place now, you know, but it all came together through the love of music.”

A go-to spots for live music, KJ Farrells, closed on May 14, due to hardships faced amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Open since May of 2007, KJ Farrells was known for hosting live music performances, every day of the week. According to a post on Facebook, the venue said, “For the past 15 years, KJ Farrells has been a huge part of the Long Island Music Scene… due to Covid and the new norms, it has been difficult to operate like we did prior to the pandemic.”

KJ Farrells cited challenges, such as staffing issues, light crowd attendance and rising operation costs.

“As we are coming to the end of our lease and the landlord has worked with us as much as possible, we have had to make the difficult decision to close our doors,” the post further read.

On May 11, the band, Wonderous Stories, performed their last show at KJ Farrells, drawing a crowd of regulars and fans.

“I’m devastated — I mean, the thought of not having a musical family all together,” patron Maddi Stone said. “Any night of the week you come out, and you’ll know at least a handful of

Bouy’s Law keeps pet owners informed

Buoy James Tischler, a yellow Labrador retriever, was “a constant source of joy and support” for Mary Kate Tischler and her husband, James, Mary Kate said especially when their house in Seaford was destroyed by Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 and they were displaced for two years while it was being rebuilt.

But in January 2013, at age 3, Buoy went to the veterinarian for knee surgery and was prescribed a painkiller to help him recover. Unbeknown to the

Tischlers, the medication was known to have serious adverse side effects, including kidney failure. When Buoy’s kidneys failed, he had to be euthanized that March.

Now, almost 10 years later, new legislation named Buoy’s Law passed unanimously in the State Senate on May 10, after being approved by the State Assembly the week before. The bill, which would require veterinarians to provide pet owners with information about any drug dispensed to an animal, including any adverse effects associated with its use, as well as the manufactur-

er’s precautions and relevant warnings, is now on its way to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s desk.

“It’s really exciting,” Mary Kate said.

“I’ve been joking that I’ve made a law, but of course I didn’t do it myself — it’s been a long process.”

The fight in Buoy’s memory started in 2013 after the Tischlers filed a lawsuit against the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island, in West Islip, where he was treated, with the Bay Shore law group Siben and Siben. The Tischlers claimed veterinary malpractice, negligence, negligent misrepresentation and

lack of informed consent, and sued for property damage and punitive damages for VMCLI’s treatment of Buoy with medicine known as Rimadyl. The case eventually settled and the Tischlers were reimbursed for the full costs of Buoy’s dialysis treatments.

As it turned out, their attorney in the case knew State Sen. Phil Boyle, a Republican who represents New York’s 4th Senate district, and told him about the case in 2014. “[Boyle] decided that he wanted to propose a bill that would address the problem, and it was called Buoy’s Law,” Mary Kate recounted.

“From that point until now I’ve consistently attempted to move the bill forward.” That became even more important to her when James Tischler died in 2016.

State Assemblyman Steve Englebright, a Democrat who represents the 4th Assembly District, was the bill’s sponsor in the Assembly, and Mary Kate said, worked tirelessly to get it through the Assembly.

Sen. John Brooks, a Democrat in the 8th Senate District, eventually took over sponsorship of the bill. “Under his direction, and with the help of his communications director,” Tischler said, “we finally got the bill passed.”

“For most of us, our pets are members of our families,” Brooks said in a statement, “and when they are sick or in pain, we want to know as much as possible about possible treatments and their consequences. Since veterinarians are already provided this information, it would seem only common sense to advise pet owners as to all potential side effects of prescribed medications.”

Tischler said their experience with Buoy wasn’t easy, and she didn’t want anyone else to go through it. He started showing symptoms less than 10 days after his surgery, and after he was brought back to VMCLI twice, he was admitted to the Animal Medical Center in New York City, and began dialysis treatment, which continued for about five weeks. After his blood results showed no change in his kidney function, the Tischlers arrange to have him euthanized.

“I remember having a dying dog in my back seat and being so upset, and it being nighttime and raining,” Tischler said of the night that Buoy was brought to AMC. “It was an incredibly time-consuming, expensive and emotionally draining process.”

Now, Tischler and her 8-year-old daughter Ruby, celebrate the Legislature’s passage of the law and wait hopefully for it to be signed by Hochul so that other pets can be protected and their owners better informed. “We watched the Senate proceedings together,” Mary Kate said. “And Ruby’s going around telling everyone that we didn’t get any warnings about the bad effects that could happen to Buoy, and then he died, and now we’re saving other pets from dying.”

She added, “I feel really proud of the fact that my daughter has learned from me that it’s possible to make a big change in the world.”

It’s not every day that a Boy Scout becomes an Eagle Scout, and Christopher Dubon of North Bellmore is one of the relative few to earn that rank. For his Eagle Scout service project, Dubon built Martin Avenue Elementary School an outdoor library and reading patio, to be enjoyed by students of all ages.

On May 12, the project was unveiled at a special ceremony at the school, which is part of the North Bellmore Union Free School District. Dubon graduated from Martin Avenue in 2016, and is now a senior at Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District.

Q. We need to simplify our job. The costs are out of control. Can we only do plans for the part of our home we’re adding on, since a few architects are telling us we need plans of the whole house, even though we’re only doing an addition for a backyard den off our kitchen, with a deck? How do we simplify?

A. Somebody named Murphy once said, “Whatever can go wrong will go wrong.” Someone named Stein responded to that by saying, “Murphy was an optimist!” You can now quote Leeper’s Law: The act of simplifying often leads to further complication. In the process of trying to make things easier, you may have unanticipated problems that can surprise you.

I started writing this column because I saw people making the biggest investment of their lives without truly understanding the process or what to expect. Documentation onte eeper and planning shouldn’t be taken for granted. Part of a licensed professional’s job is consumer protection, on top of combining artistic needs, structure, function and systems.

From your perspective, we need to only provide the planning for the affected areas. That seems simple enough. But then things get more complicated, because our plans are reviewed by so many others who all have their particular point of view.

Building officials see your home or business differently than you do. Years ago, when everything was done with paper and pencil, we submitted plans and they got reviewed at face value, such as only looking at the room you want to add. Then computers compiled information that allowed officials to quickly locate the whole property history and possible illegal uses that were previously recorded. After a while, it became a regular assumption of government that people were all trying to get away with something most of the time, and the extra level of scrutiny led to officials asking for more and more information, mainly because some owners ruined trust for everybody.

You are automatically under suspicion for illegal two-family use, illegal sheds, decks, pools and fences, or the lack of a permit for your air conditioner or finished basement or attic. Add to that the zoning information, “clear sight triangle” to avoid blocking drivers from seeing across your property, energy code analysis for even your simple addition, plus light and ventilation charts to show your window changes and there you go, not so simple anymore. Simple would be great, if it were also reality.

Your home may have had a violation that was never cleared from a suspicion of a former owner who rented the basement, or a long-term house guest who caused a neighbor to secretly report you, without any need for proof. It happens more often than you imagine, and then things get complicated just proving that there’s no illegal use, or you have to hire a professional to produce plans for more than you expected. You could start out simply, but be prepared for the rest. Good luck!

n just under six weeks, New York state voters will get a chance to select the candidates for governor and State Assembly. With no disrespect to that branch of the Legislature, and having been an Assembly member myself, it is obviously the race for governor that is the most significant one from the standpoint of the millions of New Yorkers who will cast their ballots.

New York is a state that tilts heavily toward the Democratic Party, so the party’s primary contest on JERRY Tuesday, June 28, will more than KREMER likely choose the person who will run our state for the next four years. I’m not ignoring the fact that there’s a Republican challenger, U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin, but with the highest vote concentration in the downstate region, a big Republican vote from upstate won’t be significant enough to drown out the heavy Democratic enrollment elsewhere.

Candidate Tom Suozzi, another member of Congress, has spent a substantial amount of money on television ads intro-

ducing himself to the general public. He has a list of promises on taxes, crime and a variety of other issues. But considering the fact that he’s running against Gov. Kathy Hochul, who already has the job, Suozzi has yet to tell voters why they should choose him over Hochul, who would be the first woman elected governor in state history.

Suozzi is running as a right-of-center candidate in a state where most of the voters who show up for primary elections lean to the left. Whether the progressives will turn out for Hochul is still an open question.

The recently passed state budget was a big victory for Hochul. While some armchair critics have blamed the lateness of the spending plan on the governor, the delay was partially caused by her insistence that there be bail reform changes in the package. Because the new budget had so many of Hochul’s proposals, the Senate and Assembly leadership refused to attend the traditional news conference following its passage.

Having served as chairman of the Assembly Ways and Means Committee for 10 years, I can attest to the fact that the new spending plan spreads equal

amounts of money throughout the state, as opposed to previous budgets, which were heavily weighted toward New York City and Long Island. The city got substantial amounts of money for health and day care workers and big dollars for mass transit. Long Island was a big winner, with record amounts of school aid, money for road improvements and for clean water projects.

Suozzi has been critical of the approval of public funds for a new stadium for the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. Historically, western New York, like most upstate areas, has been an orphan when it comes to state dollars. If there were a grant of state money for a football stadium on the West Side of Manhattan, you’d hear the same gripes from upstate voters. Previously, Gov. Andrew Cuomo awarded funds for numerous upstate programs, but many, like a Buffalo solar factory, produced no economic gain.

There is no doubt that crime will be a big issue for voters, but the responsibility for New York City’s current crime wave is an issue for Mayor Eric Adams, and can’t be shifted to the state. The controversial bail reform law that was signed by Cuomo has now been amended

with revisions aimed at giving judges more discretion over criminals with gun charges and others with histories of violent crime.

Thanks to recent revelations about an upcoming U.S. Supreme Court decision that may overturn Roe v. Wade, Hochul has set aside $35 million in funds for women in need of abortions where appropriate. There are no differences between the two Democrats on this issue, but the governor has the money, so she has the upper hand.

Suozzi has one self-made disaster to deal with when it comes to the LGBT community. His recent description of Florida’s controversial so-called “Don’t Say Gay” law as “reasonable” resulted in some serious pushback against him that will be hard to controvert. How bad a hit he will take is still up in the air. The electoral clock is ticking, and six weeks go by quickly. Suozzi is facing a big challenge to capture the attention of the voters, and at this point he has failed to get any big wins on the campaign trail, which leaves him where he started — on first base.

A Memorial Day like no other in our lives

he things we carry to this Memorial Day, 2022, are freighted with more recent events than past battles. On the last Monday in May, we look back to honor our war dead; this year we also hold in our hearts love for the friends and family members who died this year and last in the pandemic.

We stagger under the weight of one million Americans dead of Covid-19. This has been a war, too.

This year, especially, it feels appropriate to broaden the meaning of Memorial RAnDi Day to honor the KREiss sacrifice of all those who have lived through the plague of our time, including the medical teams and the teachers and the workers who kept showing up and, especially, the parents who have fought a front-line battle every day since winter 2020. The efforts of scientists to develop vaccines with unprecedented speed have been astonishing and heroic.

My special heroes are our teenagers, who gave up nearly every single aspect of joy in their lives to stay healthy and

keep their parents and grandparents safe. Teens live for connection and freedom and breaking through boundaries and trying new things. During Covid, the constraints have been particularly onerous for them. In an ironic twist, just as the world was awakening to the dangers of screen time, so many millions of kids were pushed ever further into the digital world of texting and Zooming. As we all know, our teens are experiencing a secondary epidemic of depression and stress and mental health crises.

I want to honor their sacrifice. I say this out loud to my teenage grandkids, and I want them to know that we know how tough it has been.

The parents of young kids have been raising their children without the relief of school and play dates and family gatherings. Many struggled to keep the home front safe and productive. They were also trying to work, to pay the bills, to get meals on the table. I wish there were medals of honor for them, too.

Growing up, I watched Memorial Day parades along Broadway in Woodmere.

Later, my kids marched down the avenue with their school bands, tooting on their

clarinets. In my mind’s eye I can see them looking so proud to be part of the parade, glancing sideways to catch my eye as they walked by. They stopped at the war memorial on the corner of Broadway and Conklin and, in a solemn ceremony, offered gratitude to those who died in our great wars.

I imagine that as children march in this year’s Memorial Day parades and parents gather on the sidewalks, with or without masks, thoughts of other losses will bleed into the moment — as it should be when so many are scarred by painful memories of the past two years.

Many Americans visit cemeteries and place flags on the graves of soldiers who defended American democracy in conflicts going back to the Civil War. We have seen images of hundreds of thousands of flags on the Mall in the nation’s capital, each a reminder of someone who died too soon or too young during this raging pandemic. For me, it is all threaded together.

These past two years have been a battle, complicated by divisions and conflicts among our citizens. Add to this the suffering in Ukraine beaming into our

It’s a big job being a thoughtful American citizen today. We want to keep up our traditions and we need to move along with life, somehow weaving our most recent pandemic losses into the fabric of our days.

According to NPR, Marked By Covid, a grass-roots group, is advocating for a National Day of Remembrance to honor those who died.

In the meantime, on this Memorial Day, I will think about all those brave kids who carried the American flag onto beaches in Normandy, and friends who died in Vietnam and those who were killed in Afghanistan and on so many other foreign fields far from home.

I will remember the more recent losses of friends who died of Covid, and I will also go to a barbecue and eat a hot dog and celebrate our lives, which are ever so precious. We just have to do it all.

This Memorial Day is like no other.

Another tragedy, and no hope on the horizon

And then there was Aaron Salter, a 55-year-old retired police officer. He spent his days after his time on the force greeting customers as they walked into the Tops supermarket in the Masten Park neighborhood of Buffalo. His job was security, and everyone knew him. And he knew everyone.

Well, not everybody, unfortunately. Not the monster who was tearing through the store’s parking lot on Saturday, using what police believe were illegally modified semiautomatic assault weapons, emblazoned with racist sentiments like, “Here’s your reparations.” While at first glance it seemed he was firing his weapon indiscriminately, authorities believe his targets were quite deliberate: anyone who was Black.

Salter had been trained to deal with this very scenario, an unfolding mass shooting.

He had never come face to face with it, but he knew what he had to do — protect the lives of everyone around him, even if that meant taking the life of the man who threatened all of them.

Salter pulled his handgun from its holster and took aim. Police said he fired a number of shots, and hit the perpetrator at least once. Except the bullets didn’t stop him. They didn’t even slow him down. The young man was reportedly wearing body

armor, protecting him from heroes like Salter.

The gunman reportedly turned his own gaze toward Salter — who did not have the benefit of protective armor — and pulled the trigger.

Another senseless mass shooting. No. 198, in fact, according to NPR and the Gun Violence Archive — in 2022. That’s right.

Last Saturday was the 134th day of the year, yet this country has already had 198 mass shootings. They claimed the lives of 210 people, and forever changed the lives of 836 more who survived.

On Jan. 1 alone — New Year’s Day — the nation was victim to seven mass shootings, including one in Philadelphia that claimed the life of one person, and injured four others.

What happened in Buffalo is believed to be racially motivated. And as evidence continues to accumulate about the shooter, it’s hard to believe otherwise. And while tackling racism is a different discussion that needs far more space than we have here, the fact is that this is a nation where there are too many guns are on the street, and more often than not, they are used to instantly destroy families, and communities.

The Philadelphia shooting wasn’t believed to be racially motivated. It was just a dispute, enhanced by alcohol, that turned deadly simply because a gun was available. It’s the kind of violence you almost never hear about anywhere else outside the U.S. But here it’s something we expect on any day that ends with a "Y." letters Randi’s ‘raised voice for women’ To the Editor: Thanks to Randi Kreiss for having the courage and honesty to write about the threat to a woman’s right to control her body and her destiny (“Threat to choice has women on the march,” May 12-18). I am approaching 70. I have raised two successful and loving human beings who were wanted and treasured. I also had the ability to end two unwanted pregnancies early in my 20s, which allowed me to continue my life to the point where I was financially, emotionally and socially able to welcome and nourish the much-wanted children I did choose to bear. I have never regretted my decision to terminate those unintended pregnancies, and am extremely grateful that the choice was mine to make.

This is such a frightening time in our lives, as we watch such hard-fought gains be ripped away by religious and social hypocrites who appear to care far more about life before birth than the life of a child — and its parents — after it arrives.

Following the tragedy, many lawmakers took to social media and called up reporters to express their condolences and outrage. Gov. Kathy Hochul made the rounds on national television, preaching about the need for better gun control. But as quickly as those sentiments flare up, they just as quickly flame out. Over and over again, we get the same action aimed at ending this true pandemic: absolutely nothing.

That must end. The excuses must end.

The silly arguments that any regular person needs a weapon that can instantly kill or maim a large number of people must be put to rest. The time for talk is over. The time to act is now.

Aaron Salter should have never spent the final moments of his life face to face with a monster. He had a distinguished career with the Buffalo Police Department, regularly putting his life on the line.

Yet even a neighborhood supermarket proved to be more dangerous for him than some of the most violent hotspots in the world.

No more. Read their names again — Celestine Chaney. Roberta Drury. Andre Mackneil. Katherine Massey. Margus Morrison. Heyward Patterson. Aaron Salter.

Geraldine Talley. Ruth Whitfield. Pearl Young. And remember them the next time you think there’s something more important than ending this nation’s gun crisis once and for all.

very weekday at 10:06 a.m., I walk into my high school engineering class and take a seat among my peers. I spend the period learning the same material as my classmates, completing the same assignments as them and receiving the same education. I wouldn’t think twice about attending if it weren’t for the fact that 15 pairs of eyes are on me the moment I walk into the room, for one reason and one reason only: I’m a girl in a classroom full of boys.

Amazingly, this one simple attriIlana bute of mine has power to GrEEnbErG the instantly draw so much attention.

For roughly 40 minutes, I am no longer a student who loves engineering. Rather, I’m a girl who loves engineering.

I’d like to imagine a perfect world, with equal participation of men and women in all professions. However, while there is more opportunity these days for both men

and women to break into rigidly defined, gender-specific jobs, an imbalance still holds in certain career paths, including science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM. I’m a high school freshman who has always been passionate about STEM. Yet despite efforts by well-meaning stakeholders and educators to promote more enthusiasm among women in these subjects, I can’t help but feel that today’s inspiring message for girls in the field is too wrapped up in their gender.

Instead of pushing for girls to be treated like everyone else, there is an unhealthy obsession with making gender the centerpiece of today’s advocacy for girls in STEM. I often receive praise for being “confident enough” to pursue what has been labeled an unlikely passion for my gender.

I garner attention and adulation for defying gender barriers by deciding to enroll in STEM-based classes.

But I find this focus on my gender distracting from my work and frustrating, to

lEttErs Randi, regardless of the pushback you may receive on this column — much of it from older men, I suspect! — please stay strong and remain a raised voice for women, their bodies and their choices. The specter of a Margaret Atwoodtype dystopia rising in our midst grows more real every day. Like you, I cannot believe that we are fighting for basic rights we believed we had secured decades ago. Those who opened the Pandora’s box of Trumpism and religionsaturated politics must not be allowed to damage this country more than they have already.

Fight the good fight for us, Randi!

A decision that was theirs to make To the Editor: I cannot agree with Randi more about what she wrote. Her decision to have an abortion was only for her and her husband to make. I am certain they did not make this decision lightly or quickly. Whatever their reasons, they did what they thought was the right decision at the time.

I have known women who have had the procedure, and whatever their reasons were, I supported them.

It is an extremely personal matter, and I applaud Randi for coming for-

say the least. I just want to escape the label of feminism attached to my interest in STEM, and simply be able to enter my engineering class without getting noticed, just like boys do.

Today’s educational programs, like Girls Who Code, while inspiring and well-intentioned, inadvertently call attention to the fact that STEM isn’t a “normal” activity for girls. By singling out girls in creating specialized female-oriented programs, educators seem to acknowledge that girls aren’t expected to be like their gender opposites in science. To me, it’s akin to creating a group called Teenagers Who Respect Their Parents or Kids Who Aren’t Always On Their Phones.

Granted, there is no mistaking that my interests in STEM as a girl are considered rare by today’s standards. Women account for roughly half of the population, but they comprise only 28 percent of workers in STEM fields, according to the American Association of University Women.

Perhaps that’s because math and science

continue to be promoted as “male-oriented” subjects.

I’ve seen this firsthand. In middle school, I was one of two girls in a class of 20 students in a computer animation program. On the website of a prestigious math summer program, girls were especially encouraged to apply, because most of its participants are male. Disturbingly, even my early-childhood day camp discouraged girls from choosing sciencerelated activities, and our choice of workshops didn’t include the boys’ activities of engineering and rocket science. Our choices included ceramics, dance and “beauty school.”

Yes, there is still a lack of equality in perception, but the way to fix this isn’t by forming a club exclusively for girls that puts the emphasis on “girls coding” instead of simply “coding.” Educators should create courses that include both boys and girls. While I’m grateful for the progress women have made in STEM, I look forward to the day when walking into my engineering class won’t be cause for surprise.

No, Kagan, Sotomayor should not retire To the Editor: Re Matthew Adarichev’s column, “Stephen Breyer retired. Why not Kagan and Sotomayor?” (May 12-18): Why not? Because this is a fantasy, flawed in detail and conception.

Details: The Supreme Court justices are not pawns to be manipulated. To expect a double-unanimous vote of 50 Democratic senators to confirm a pair of young replacements is a risky bet, the effort itself would demolish any remaining shred of court legitimacy, and nothing would be gained, because Sen. Mitch McConnell’s supermajority would remain.

Concept: The battle for the court is over. The present battle is for Congress, and it will be over by Christmas. Mr. Adarichev’s suggestion that Democrats adopt Republicans’ “Machiavellian” tricks to fight for power means they would abandon the laws, institutions, and aspirations of the American project.

To imitate the Gingrich-McConnellLimbaugh model is to become them.
