On Oct. 29 at the Crest Hollow Country Club, the West Hempstead Chamber of Commerce presented two residents with Businessperson of the Year awards: Sagine Pierre Charles for 2021, and Fred Sorrentino for 2020. Home in West Hempstead, a business started by his father 60 years ago, which was affected extensively by the pandemic. “Considering what he went through in 2020,” Marshall Myers, president of the West Hempstead chamber, said of Sorrentino, “he was well deserving of the award.” The chamber recognized the difficulties that Sorrentino dealt with and helped guide f amilies through, including downsized farewell rituals. “Funerals are meant
for the living,” Myers said, “but those couldn’t take place. He really had to kind of step into the breach and just handle things the way they were.” Sor rentino worked through an unprecedented period with the help of his staff. “We . . . did our heartfelt best to provide meaningful and dignified services with a paramount commitment to the highest level of service,” he wrote in an email. “Our continued prayers are with CONTINUED ON PAGE 4
