Local dojo wins dozens of medals at karate nationals By JORDAN VALLONE jvallone@liherald.com

Becoming an athlete for Team USA is no small feat — and a dojo in West Hempstead is now home to six new members of the national karate team, wh excelled at the 2021 USA National Karate Championship and U.S. Team Trials. EGN International Karate and Fitness Center opened its doors on Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead in 2014. It is owned by Sensei Elhadji G Ndour, a world and national champion who watched his students succeed at the most competitive karate

competition in the country, which hosted more than 2,600 athletes. Bringing home 53 medals — 28 gold, 10 silver and 15 bronze — the dojo had the highest overall medal count. In total, 23 students from EGN competed in the championships Sept. 1- 5 in Chicago. With the dojo shut down for many months because of Covid-19, Ndour told the Herald it was “very, very difficult” to keep its students active while in lockdown. “Our business has struggled due to Covid,” Ndour said. “Before Covid, we had 70

active students. We now have 30. “We trained online and in the park,” he explained. “We also had online seminars from international world champions. I taught online sessions — virtual classes — five days a week to keep them active.” The at-home training paid off, and many of the dojo’s students were able to remain in shape and ready to compete. “If we did not do anything during lockdown, the kids would not have been able to perform like they did,” Ndour added.
