FoRMER MalVERNE HiGH School basketball star Jayden Seraphin is preparing for his college debut at Queens College this winter.

Malverne High School’s former AllCounty basketball star, Jayden Seraphin, is getting ready to suit up for the Queens College Knights this winter. Seraphin, 18, was a captain of the 2019-20 Mules team that played in the Long Island Class B championship game against Center Moriches. Although the Mules lost 94-90, the horn at the end of overtime meant more to Seraphin and teammate Michael Warren than the end of the game. “I dapped him up and gave him a hug,” Warren recalled. “I knew it was hurtful, but it’s not like we went out without a fight. I knew he gave it his all.”

“I thought after the game I would be in tears, because it was the last time I would play [for] Malverne,” said Seraphin, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard, who forced OT with an acrobatic shot with 11.5 seconds remaining in regulation. “But Coach [Darrol] Lopez always told me if you just put everything out on the floor, you’ll never be ashamed of the outcome. So after the game it was all smiles, to be honest. It sounds crazy, since we lost, but I was proud of my team and what we accomplished.” Seraphin inspired his teammates on and off the court, according to Malverne associate coach Walter Aksionoff. Often the first to arrive at practice, Seraphin, Aksionoff recounted, sought different ways to lead by examContinued on page 5

For decades, Barbara Purcell was known as the first lady of Malverne, and eventually of Nassau County and the Town of Hempstead as well. Her husband, Francis Purcell, served as the village’s mayor, and later as county executive and town supervisor. “Her husband was always known as a consummate profes-

sional and an excellent public servant,” Malverne Mayor Keith Corbett said. “Barbara was by his side all of those years.” Barbara Purcell died in New Bern, N.C., on Aug. 15. She was 100. Francis Purcell died in 2014. A graduate of Malverne High School in 1938, Purcell was a longtime village resident before she moved to Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., in the early 1990s, and later to North Carolina.

An avid golfer, Purcell was a member of the Rockville Links Country Club and PGA National, in Palm Beach Gardens, who enjoyed the game well into her 80s. To many village residents, Purcell was known as a lifelong volunteer and an active member of Malverne American Legion Post 44. “When she was living here in Malverne, right after World War II, she was extremely active in

the American Legion Auxiliary,” recalled Ladies Auxiliary President Dr. Carol Hassett. “She kept up her dues every year, like a good auxiliary member.” November 2020 marked the 100th anniversary of the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Ladies Auxiliary had searched for a way to commemorate the anniversary. That’s when the Continued on page 12
