Malver ne High School proudly cut the ribbon on its new, $1.5 million artificialturf baseball field last Saturday. Students, alumni, family members and school district and elected officials gathered at 10 a.m. to celebrate the inauguration of the field, and to watch the Malverne varsity win its first game on it. The event began with a gathering in the stands and

behind home plate, where friends and neighbors caught up and commented on the quality of the field, the beauty of the day, and the chances that the Mules would win the game against West Hempstead. The visitors patronized the concession stand, and many sat in folding chairs for the ribbon cutting in front of home plate. Michael Pelan, Malverne’s director of physical education, health and athletics, served as emcee, and honor-

ees included the committee responsible for remaking and raising money for the field, as well as alumni who had played for the baseball team in the past. The Malverne Mule mascot somehow managed to pop into nearly every photo. Superintendent Lor na Lewis noted how remarkable it was to finally finish the project, after work was delayed by a year due to the Continued on page 10
